So if you’ve followed me for a bit you’ve probably picked up a couple things, I like taking pictures and I like the F-14…. Which brings me to what I wanted to talk about this #TomcatTuesday …. The TARPS mission. Pictures and Tomcats! What a combo!
The TARPS mission seems to be overshadowed by all the other cool stuff the VF squadrons were doing but the fact of the matter is that the mighty Tomcat was flying reconnaissance missions with the TARPS pod for a large portion of its career. And these weren’t low threat missions. These were mission where the crews were blazing across hostile territory at the speed of heat and out running SAM’s. I shit you not, I’ve heard stories of Tomcats returning from TARPS missions with blistered paint. They really were hauling ass!
TARPS entered the fleet way back in 1981 and as near as I can tell, served well into the 2000’s. Not bad for a system that was intended to be a place holder until the Hornet got its recon nose (it was a thing that was planned, but Hornets are boring so we’re not discussing that here).
It was a massive system, nearly 2,000 LBS and 17 feet long. The unit was mounted in the tunnel between the engines and it could not be jettisoned.
The system was put to use over the Middle East, Somalia, and Balkans, as well as other hot spots around the world.
If you want to know more about this incredibly important but often overshadowed mission I highly recommend the MATS website. It’s a fantastic resource for all things F-14.

The Role of Tarps for Post Harvest Management of Hay and other Agricultural Products
Post-harvest management is the process implemented after the farmers harvest the crops to ensure their quality and longevity. This is the critical phase that could mean profit or loss for farmers. This phase involves cleaning, drying, sorting, packaging, storage, and transporting.
According to the FAO, up to 30% of produce is lost globally due to inadequate post-harvest practices. That is why post-harvest management plays critical role in defining whether the farmer takes profit, or loss.
Protecting Crops During Harvest
During harvest, crops can be spread to the ground for sorting and cleaning. Most farmers use poly tarps as a clean surface to lay the crops for sorting and cleaning. This will reduce contamination and makes it easier to clean the debris after this phase.
Poly tarps can be used as a clean surface to place crops on for cleaning and sorting - this will reduce contamination and make it easier to collect and dispose of debris.
After cleaning, crops are then covered with tarps to protect them from dusts, and pests while waiting for the next process. Covering the crops with poly tarps can help reduce moisture loss.
Drying Crops Efficiently
During drying, tarps are spread out to provide a clean surface for drying crops and prevent moisture buildup. Too much moisture could degrade the crops, so balance should be maintained during the first phase.
In a sudden weather change, tarps can quickly cover the crops to prevent spoilage and loss.
Temporary Storage
Suppose there's any delay before crops can be processed in the next phase. In that case, farmers use hay tarps to create temporary storage to protect the crops before moving them to the following process and permanent storage facilities.
Protecting the crops during this phase is critical, as this is when they are most vulnerable to quality degradation and spoilage, especially when they are stored outside the barn, where they are most susceptible to rain, excessive sunlight, and wind. All of these factors can deteriorate the quality of crops.
Crop Transport
When transporting crops, poly tarps are ideal as it is waterproof. After loading the crops on a truck, a tarp is spread over the crops to protect is from dust, rain, direct sunlight, and prevent spillage due to wind making sure that the crops arrive at the destination intact.
Poly tarps are ideal due to their waterproof nature - it will protect the load from unexpected showers or high humidity that can lead to moisture accumulation that will spoil the crops.
It will also protect the load from dusts and airborne debris that may contain contaminants especially when passing through rural and industrial areas.
Sunlight is also a significant factor of concern during transport especially when transporting crops that are sensitive to heat or excessive sunlight exposure, like leafy greens, fruits, herbs, and root vegetables. Direct sunlight exposure during the long travel will cause discoloration, wilting, and dehydration. Poly tarps can have UV-resistant properties which blocks the harmful rays.
Wind may spill the load during transport leading to loss of production or a potential hazard on the road. Securely covering it with tarp will keep it from wind displacing and scattering the load enhancing road safety.
Tarps are vital at maintaining the overall integrity of the produce by reducing the exposure of crops from natural environmental fluctuations, like temperature and humidity which can negatively affect he crop quality during transit.
Reduction of Environmental Waste
Reducing environmental waste is an increasingly important goal as farmers strive to adopt sustainable practices in the agricultural sector. Instead of using single-use plastic covers, farmers use tarps. When properly maintained, tarps offer a durable and reusable solution that helps reduce the environmental impact of traditional plastics.
Tarps are reusable, thus having significant advantages over plastic coverings. Unlike plastics, which degrade faster and contribute to environmental pollution, tarps are resilient to wear and tear and can withstand repeated use over a long period.
This resilience means that with proper care, tarps can be reused season after season, reducing the need for constant replacement and reducing plastic waste.
Tarps can be reused if stored properly when not in use, making them the best option for reducing plastic waste. Their resilience to wear and tear makes them an excellent replacement for plastic coverings that could pollute the environment.
Thanks to tarps' reusability, the farmer's budget, which should have gone to plastic coverings, can now be allocated to more important things.
Conclusion
Implementing effective post-harvest management not only improves the farmer's income but also reduces food wastage, which is vital for global food management. Through careful handling, storing, and transporting, the quality of crops remains high-quality making them market ready when arriving at the destination.

Moving can be stressful, especially when it comes to protecting your belongings during the transition. Traditionally, people rely on moving blankets to safeguard their furniture, appliances, and delicate items. However, tarps are emerging as an effective and even superior alternative for many moving scenarios. In this article, we’ll explore why tarps make excellent moving blankets, focusing on their durability, versatility, and protective qualities.
What Makes Tarps Stand Out as Moving Blankets?
When moving, it’s crucial to use materials that are not only protective but also practical and affordable. Tarps offer several advantages over traditional moving blankets:
Superior Durability
Weather Resistance
Cost-Effective Solution
Ease of Use and Versatility
Protection for Large and Bulky Items
These benefits make tarps a go-to option, especially for those looking to save money while ensuring their possessions are well-protected.
Durability: A Key Factor in Protecting Your Belongings
One of the most significant reasons tarps outperform moving blankets is their durability. Most tarps are made from high-quality materials such as polyethylene or vinyl, which are far more robust than the fabric used in traditional moving blankets. These materials are designed to withstand tears, abrasions, and heavy usage, making them ideal for moving.
Moving blankets, although soft and padded, can wear out over time and may not provide sufficient protection against sharp or heavy objects. Tarps, on the other hand, offer a stronger layer of defense, ensuring that your valuable items remain intact during transport.
Weather Resistance: Moving in Any Condition
When moving, the weather can be unpredictable. Tarps shine in this area due to their waterproof and UV-resistant properties. If you’re moving in the rain or storing your belongings outside temporarily, traditional moving blankets may absorb moisture, leading to mildew or water damage.
In contrast, tarps repel water, keeping your belongings dry and safe. Whether it's rain, snow, or extreme sun exposure, tarps can protect your items from harsh weather conditions without compromising their integrity.
Versatility: More Than Just a Blanket
Tarps offer unparalleled versatility compared to moving blankets. They can be used not only for wrapping and covering furniture but also for a wide range of purposes during the moving process:
Ground Protection: Lay a tarp on the floor to prevent dirt, mud, or scratches on flooring.
Temporary Shelter: If you need to move in bad weather, tarps can provide temporary shelter over your items.
Storage Covers: Use tarps to cover items that need to be stored outside before, during, or after the move.
The adaptability of tarps makes them a smart choice for movers who need more than just a blanket. Their large size and flexibility allow for multiple applications beyond simple item coverage.
Cost-Effective: Save Money While Moving Safely
Moving can quickly become expensive when you factor in the cost of renting or purchasing moving blankets. While moving blankets are specifically designed for the task, their cost can add up, especially if you need several to protect your larger items. Tarps, however, offer a cost-effective solution.
Affordable and available in various sizes, tarps provide excellent value for your money. Whether you’re a DIY mover on a budget or a professional moving company looking to reduce costs, tarps are a reliable and economical option. After the move, they can be reused for other purposes, making them a long-term investment.
Lightweight and Easy to Handle
Another advantage of tarps is their lightweight nature. While moving blankets are often bulky and cumbersome, tarps are much easier to carry and maneuver. This makes them especially useful for wrapping large items such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances.
Their lightweight design also means less strain during loading and unloading, making your move faster and more efficient. Additionally, tarps can be folded or rolled up when not in use, saving space in your moving truck or storage unit.
Protecting Large and Bulky Items
One of the challenges in moving is protecting large or oddly-shaped items. Moving blankets, while soft, may not always provide full coverage for oversized or uniquely shaped pieces of furniture. Tarps, however, come in a variety of large sizes, making it easier to cover entire items without the need for multiple blankets.
For items such as sofas, dining tables, or bed frames, tarps offer more comprehensive protection by wrapping around the entire surface, preventing scratches, dents, or other damage during the move.
Tarps Provide a Barrier Against Dirt and Dust
In addition to protecting against weather, tarps are excellent at shielding your belongings from dust, dirt, and debris during transit. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, tarps act as a barrier, keeping your items clean and ready for immediate use in your new home.
Unlike fabric moving blankets, which can attract dust and dirt, tarps are easy to wipe down and keep clean, ensuring that your items arrive at their destination in pristine condition.
Tarps Are Reusable and Multifunctional
Once your move is complete, moving blankets typically serve no other purpose, often taking up storage space or being discarded. Tarps, on the other hand, are reusable and offer a wide range of post-move uses.
From outdoor projects like covering equipment or creating makeshift shelters to protecting furniture during home renovations, tarps are incredibly multipurpose. This reusability factor adds to their overall value and makes them a smart investment for both personal and professional movers.
Customizable Protection for Any Move
One of the best features of tarps is their ability to be customized to fit any size or shape of your belongings. Unlike moving blankets, which are limited in size, tarps can be folded, cut, or secured with bungee cords or ropes to provide custom protection.
For items with unique shapes or dimensions, such as mirrors, artwork, or appliances, tarps offer a more tailored solution. You can adjust the tarp to wrap tightly around fragile items, reducing the risk of shifting or damage during transport.
Easy Storage for Future Use
After the move, tarps are easy to store. They fold down compactly and can be stored in a garage, shed, or storage closet without taking up much space. This convenience makes them ideal for movers who want to keep protective materials on hand for future use, unlike bulky moving blankets that can be difficult to store.
In conclusion, tarps are an excellent alternative to traditional moving blankets due to their durability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. They provide weather resistance, protection for large items, and are easy to handle and store. Whether you're a DIY mover or a professional, tarps offer an efficient solution to keep your belongings safe during transit.

These practical applications highlight the versatility of waterproof tarps in meeting the diverse needs of the marine industry.
5. Best Practices for Tarp Maintenance and Longevity
To maximize the benefits of waterproof tarps, proper maintenance is essential. Adhering to a few simple best practices can extend their service life significantly:
Regular Cleaning: Remove dirt, salt, and debris from your tarps using mild soap and water. Regular cleaning prevents the buildup of harmful substances that can degrade the material over time.
Safe Storage: When not in use, store tarps in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Proper storage prevents premature aging and keeps them ready for the next use.
Routine Inspections: Periodically inspect tarps for signs of wear, such as frayed edges, loose grommets, or small tears. Addressing these issues early can prevent more extensive damage.
Secure Installation: Always ensure that tarps are tightly fastened during use. Loose tarps are more susceptible to being damaged by wind or other environmental factors.
Timely Repairs: Utilize repair kits specifically designed for waterproof tarps to fix minor damages promptly. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of larger issues and helps maintain continuous protection.
Following these maintenance practices not only extends the lifespan of your tarps but also ensures they perform optimally when you need them most.
