jack's uncles* ranked
*only the notable uncles bc cas has like 5 million older brothers
6. lucifer, for obvious reasons
5. michael. literally even if michael was like the best coolest nicest angel in the world jack would still associate him in his brain with alternate michael who like completely tore apart his family for a few months
4. balthazar, who thinks children are sticky and gross, metatron, who tries to tell jack boring stories, and adam, who jack thinks is fine.
3. sam, who he loves of course but because he sees him a lot more than the top 2 on the list the shine has kinda worn off
2. gabriel, sometimes he'll say weird things that jack doesn't understand but he always brings toys and candy when he visits and is GREAT with kids bc he acts like one anyways. tries very hard to be the fun uncle, has big "favorite camp counselor" vibes
1. crowley bc "uncle crowley is so funny!" cas and crowley are both very unhappy about this

ok, humour me for a minute.
this isn’t a fix it fic, it’s more of a fix it episode synopsis.
if i could write my own silly little perfect ending: it would mostly be the same up until jack defeats chuck in 15x19.
then, amara becomes god. she is benevolent and she’s caring and she’s everything chuck wasn’t. like jack does in the real episode, she closes her eyes and all the people who got dusted come back. à la avengers endgame with clint’s wife, we know because sam’s phone rings, and its a facetime call from eileen. the relief in his voice is unmatched as he answers.
back at the bunker, dean is first in the door and thunders down the steps. he’s almost afraid to hope, but there he is. standing in the middle of the library, is castiel. he looks bashfully at the man he so clearly loves.
“hello, dean.”
THEN
15x20. its got a “road so far” segment, god damn it.
it’s a jump five years in the future. it’s 2025, we’re at a house, it seems to be out in the country, under a wide blue sky. they have a barn, which appears to be all set up for a wedding, with white chairs and a flower arch. there is no exposed rebar in this barn.
they come inside to a house bustling with people. the camera pans through the warm home, everyone is hugging each other, all dressed to the nines. bobby. charlie and stevie. jody, alex, donna, claire and kaia. rowena has come up from hell and crowley is also there because idk his mom is the queen of hell and i’ve just decided that in my perfect episode he was resurrected at some point. garth and his family are there. donatello. the GHOSTFACERS are there! becky and her family are there. mrs butters came back from her forest for the occasion! adam is there, since he was killed by chuck and brought back by amara.
the next scene is in one of the bedrooms, and the brothers are both in suits. sam is fixing dean’s bowtie. there’s a closeup of his hand—he has a wedding band on already. it’s not his wedding!? dean looks nervous.
“tell me honestly sam—is it too much? should i change my pocket square? what do you think about these shoes...”
“dean. shut up. you’re freaking out. just breathe.”
the music slows down, all emotional and we get a monologue that i probably can’t come up with now, but sam tells dean all the things he’s done for him, how much he loves him. how hard they’ve fought together to get themselves to this point. how good it is to see dean so happy and in love. they hug. it’s beautiful.
dean leans back and looks at sam.
“my baby brother. I love you so much.”
the next scene, everyone is seated in the barn, ready for the wedding.
amara is revealed to be under the flower arch, ready to officiate, because who better to wed two lovers than god herself?
sam walks dean up the aisle, as an instrumental version of carry on my wayward son is played by a string quartet.
jack walks down the aisle next, and he is clearly the flower girl. he has a flower crown on (humour me) and he’s clumsily throwing flowers all around him. it’s adorable and amazing and kind of hilarious. he sits at the front, next to eileen and sam, who now has their little boy on his lap. jack gives a thumbs up to dean.
everyone turns for the big reveal.
castiel, dressed in the most handsome suit, walks up the aisle.
the music swells and we see dean’s face light up as we have a hundred times before, because he’s never tired of seeing his person. he is teary eyed and humbled and in love. cas reaches the arch.
“hello dean.”
“hi cas.” dean barely whispers.
amara begins, we’re gathered here today to join these two in holy etc etc.
when it comes times for vows, dean’s not always been great with words, and he keeps it short and simple, but it’s clear to anyone how much this means to him.
castiel brings the entire barn to tears with his. something about millennia spent observing humans and he never understood them. he never understood love, or loss, or want. only duty. but pulling one dean winchester out of hell would lead him on a renegade path, to defeat death, the devil and god just to keep loving him.
sam, still weeping, places his son on the ground, gently pushing him towards his uncles, saying “go on, bobby!”
he toddles over with the two rings. dean goes down to his level and takes the rings, giving him a hug. he adores his little nephew. cas puts a loving hand on his head and bobby looks up. cas signs “thank you” to him. cas and dean exchange rings.
“you may now kiss the angel!” amara exclaims.
dean dips cas back and we get the most incredible, passionate kiss. the crowd cheers, (miracle barks), and dean looks at his husband.
“I love you.”
the song ends, and they run out of the barn, hand in hand, showered in confetti by their friends and found family.
the next scene is the first dance, and it’s just got to be “I can’t help falling in love with you”, hasn’t it? they waltz, and the crowd is out of focus in the background. all that matters right now is these two and their love.
dean looks up and the camera follows his eye-line, lingering on one of the barn walls, which has been adorned with pictures of all their friends they’ve lost. the picture of them all at bobby’s house with jo and ellen. pictures from the day they went LARPing with original charlie. a picture of cas and gabriel. the picture of sam, dean and their parents from the bunker.
cas turns and looks too.
“theyre with us, dean.”
more wedding scenes...
castiel throws the bouquet and charlie catches it, looking at stevie and waggling her eyebrows. jack is dancing with little bobby, because they’re both adorable babies. crowley and rowena have some pretty slick moves on the dance floor, because duh. adam hugs his brothers.
dean and cas cut into the cake, which is of course not a cake but a huge PIE!
the last scene is the brothers sitting on the impala bonnet, having a beer together. it’s clearly late in the night, and you can hear the crickets, and the sound of the party dying down in the barn behind them.
dean throws an arm around his brother, pulling him close.
“we did it, sammy. it was you and me against the world, and we did it.”
Fade out
THE END
OBVIOUSLY this is a completely naive disney style happily ever after, but let me have my fun god damn it!!!! if i was ever so inclined, i’d fic it. maybe some day!

AU- Dean in Apocalypse World
What if it had been Dean who punched Lucifer into the Apocalypse World instead of Mary after Lucifer killed Castiel? How would things have been different?
Basically, Dean being a warrior and a great parent to Jack.
Sam is numb/empty. Both his brothers are gone.
Sam & Mary find Jack and are wary, don’t scare him/ shoot him, but it soon becomes clear Jack has issues controlling his powers.
Mary tries to comfort Sam, but Sam doesn’t let her. Only Dean, the only real parent he ever had, can.
Jack wakes Castiel up in the Empty, but when he comes back to earth, Castiel has to deal with Dean gone.
Dean in Apocalypse World, alone, but he is a soldier and he has dealt with angels for years, so it doesn’t take him long to take over the Rebel-camp.
Jack landing in front of Dean during a battle when he jumps realities.
Jack slowing down the angels and Dean taking them out instantly.
Dean pointing a gun at Jack while he questions who he is.
Jack waving and saying “Hello”.
Jack explaining how he had been looking for Dean, and how much his dads, Sam and Cas, have missed him.
Dean brokenly asking if Castiel is alive.
Jack proudly explaining Cas thought he had resurrected him by mere intuition.
Jack showing him, with a twig, how Sam had thought him to control his powers by focusing on a pencil.
Dean standing speechless, because the kid had just blasted three angels away but was showing off how he could float a twig.
Dean trying to wrap his head around that this kid is the son of Lucifer and should only be a couple months old.
Dean not caring, because Jack calls Sam and Cas his dads. And he says Mary, Sam and Cas are alive, but something had wrong with the portal so they were stuck somewhere else.
Dean letting his maternal instincts take over and adopting him.
Dean telling Jack that Sam and Cas will find them.
Dean helping Jack control his powers, telling him funny stories about Sam and Cas, teaching him how to fight, but not letting him go into battle.
Jack not understanding why he needs to learn how to fight. Jack upset that Dean doesn’t take him with him on raids. Dean patiently explaining that powers can be dangerous and he won’t always have access to them.
Dean using the same kind of games he used with Sam to make the training more fun. To make him feel more like a kid.
Once Jack knows basic defense moves, can throws knives and knows how to shoot, taking him to an abandoned place and asks him to throw a punch a the wall, but this time using a little of his power.
Jack joining Dean in raids, but following Dean’s orders and code words only.
Dean and Jack learning to be a team.
Dean standing in front of Cas and his mom and immediatly noticing Sam’s not there.
Dean asking where Sam is and Mary can’t meet his gaze and Cas is just staring at him sadly.
Dean just shutting down, because Sam died trying to rescue him and guilt and failure overwhelms him.
Dean just growling where Sam is and Cas telling him he will show him.
Dean getting his stuff so he can go fetch Sam’s body.
Jack waiting for them and immediatly seeing something is wrong with, and he doesn’t understand, because he sees Castiel and then Mary, but then realizing Sam isn’t there.
Sam stroling into the camp with a guilty expression on his face, Lucifer following.
Dean just staring at Sam while Jack hugs him.
Lucifer trying to reach out to his son, by telling Jack he saved Sam, and Sam begrudingly agreeing.
Dean calling out to Jack and with a look, Jack immediatly falls back and stands behind Dean, just like they have been doing on missions. Dean in the front facing the enemy, and Jack right behind him.
Sam watching the interaction and starts laughing.
Everyone looking at Sam like he’s gone insane.
Sam grinning at Lucifer, because he knew Lucifer had wanted to use Sam to create a relationship with his son, but Sam knowing Lucifer is too late. Because Dean and Jack have clearly bonded during their months at war. And Sam knows there is no better parent than Dean.
Sam telling Lucifer as much and Lucifer is just glaring at them. Cas is nodding along, clearly agreeing with Sam. Jack is trying to assure Cas and Sam they are great fathers too. Mary is looking put out, but also resigned.
Dean not taking chances and putting his own home-made angel-cuffs on Lucifer.
Dean warning Jack that Lucifer knows how to twist his words, so if he really wants to talk with his father, he should do it with one of his dads or his uncle Gabriel there, because they know Lucifer.
When angels attack, Dean and Jack move as a unit, and with Sam and Castiels help, the angels are taking out swiftly, mostly by Dean.
Sam and Cas staring at Dean worriedly, because they haven’t seen Dean move like that since Purgatory.

ideally if spn knew how to keep some characters alive and stop killing everyone the cast would be like this. this is entirely self-indulging and isn’t really meant to be perceived but i wanted to put it somewhere
1) team free will that lives in the bunker, aka dean, sam, cas, jack, eileen. dean and cas are dating, sam and eileen are dating, they all co-parent jack, who is a nephilim and not god because he’s THREE YEARS OLD FFS, and he just uses his powers in the most random and fun ways but it’s a nightmare for his parents. they hunt sometimes but mostly parent jack and they turned the bunker into this welcoming place for lonely wayward hunters in which they can find a room, food, books about the supernatural, and a little family
2) reccurent characters, live in hell: rowena and crowley. they have family drama all the time and either show up when tfw needs their help because of demon/witch related stuff, or when they had a fight with the others and want to rant to them (crowley rants to deancas and wants to fuck both of them but is not succeeding at all, rowena rants to saileen and does fuck both of them once in a while). they’re jack’s cool uncle and auntie, rowena keeps bringing jack gifts so he loves her
3) less reccurent, also in hell: belphegor, meg and bela (all demons) all just kinda hang out in hell. they try to overthrow the mcleods once in a while, kinda out of principle because they don’t really know what they’d do if they won. crowley hates all of them with a passion, meanwhile rowena pretends she hates them not to upset crowley but she’s actually slept with all of them and is still fucking bela. bela and dean are friends but have a love/hate relationship, meg is cas’s friend who tries to make him break up with dean, and to cas’s great disappointment belphy and jack somehow became friends
4) recurrent angels on earth: anna, gabriel and balthazar, only angels still in touch with cas. whenever he has a fight with the winchesters over petty stuff like leaving the dishes in the sink he goes to see them and they alway try to get him drunk. tfw calls them when they need help with angelic stuff or just kinda wanna hang out. anna and dean ended up being friends and dean rants to anna about cas while she rants to him about jo. it’s funny because dean sees jo as a sister and anna sees cas as a brother so all their conversations about their love lives are laced with an awareness that the other WILL murder them if they hurt their sibling
5) less recurrent, in heaven: all the other angels. anael is leading heaven. cas doesn’t like heaven’s angels, and they don’t like him either, but he does talk to anael once in a while
6) henriksen. it’s very important to me that he’s fine and that he DOESN’T know about the supernatural so he’s just constantly trying to catch the winchesters and there’s at least a couple episodes per season of sam and dean’s shenagrians with the law and more specifically henriksen. dean and henriksen have that relationship in which they’re technically enemies but also like. actually really good friends. like they’re each other’s lawful nemesis but would never let the other die. and also they definitely fucked at some point. crowley Does Not like henriksen because he has what he wishes he had with dean
7) the wayward sisters, obviously. jody and donna (NO LONGER COPS THANK YOU VERY MUCH), claire, patience, kaia, alex. kaia and claire are dating, claire, alex and jack are basically siblings. we see claire and kaia often because they show up at the bunker, and we see the others because tfw often goes to their place to have lunch and hunt monsters
8) amara and chuck. in my version of spn chuck was never the villain and is just s11 chuck. they’re both still the darkness and god, so they’re like, super powerful, but they don’t really do much, they just show up once a season at the bunker to hang out and fix the winchester’s problems (amara) and cause more problems the winchesters have to fix (chuck). dean loves when amara comes over, they rant about their annoying little siblings they actually love, while just. painting each other’s nails or something. (yes i did make dean best friends with all his exes and that’s because his exes are all fun and sexy) sam doesn’t really care about amara. on the other hand when chuck shows up sam wants to ask him a ton of questions while dean HATES him because he eats all their food, leaves his socks everywhere, sings loudly in the shower and keeps watching dean’s porn in the middle of the fucking kitchen. they can’t really kick him out, since, well, he’s god, but dean does try every time
9) the hunting veterans: ellen and ash are still in the roadhouse, we see them once in a while. bobby, rufus and mary are alive and important in the hunting community. yes, rufus and bobby are dating. and you know what? mary and ellen too. mary deserves a gf. yes im a mary apologist fuck y’all
10) my personal favorites, charlie, cassie, garth, jo and kevin. cassie became a hunter and is amazing, she’s good friends with dean and charlie has a massive crush on her. jo is dating anna and they both hunt once in a while and often hang out with the wayward sisters and the roadhouse crew. garth basically has the same relationship with tfw that he has in the show, because honestly his character is one of the few fun cute things they didn’t screw up. charlie and kevin do have their own lives but they spend so much time at the bunker, they’re really close to all of tfw and are unofficial members of tfw too, they have movie nights and have time to be happy and chill as they fucking DESERVED, they’re basically dean and sam’s adopted little siblings and it’s amazing
#oh and none of them is cishet#spn#tfw#hermy posts#self-indulgent post sorry#long post....sorry again#the secret good spn that lives in my head

Reverse verse idea
Something I really want is a good reverse verse or reverse au of Supernatural. I don’t know how I haven't found one but it seems like no one is writing any hunter!Cas, angel!Dean, or Angel/Demon!Sam in the respective roles they should have in the show.
I hate putting my own shit out for people to see and I haven’t written anything in years so this’ll be absolute garbage but the only way others might see this and hopefully do the REALLY hard work for me is if I get the ball rolling so….
Here’s how I imagine Castiel’s background as a human hunter:
Like most human!Cas fics, I see most of the angels as being his close and distantly related family who all make up the Men of Letters. There are other hunters who maybe come and go and MoL who aren’t related to Cas, but I see this as the “family business.” The Novaks (cause I’m uncreative) are made up of Chuck, Michael, Lucifer, Gabriel, Anna, Balthazar, and Castiel. Distant cousins, aunts, and uncles are made up of the other angels. Growing up, Castiel didn’t have a normal childhood, but it wasn’t filled with the doom and gloom one would probably assume a MoL family to have. He was closer to Gabriel, Balthazar, and Anna than his other family which is great because only they seem to catch his sense of humor and he loves being the secret weapon to most of Gabriel and Balthazar’s antics against the other MoL in the bunker. Castiel was homeschooled, like all of his siblings, and found his days filled with texts on all manner of creatures, folklore, and rituals that were drilled into his head which he picked up much faster than any of his other siblings, much to Michael and Lucifer’s annoyance. He also has his basic education, courtesy of his weird uncle Metatron who runs the MoL archives. MEtatron made sure all of the kids had as much of a “normal” education as possible, especially in the Literature department. The rest of Castiel’s younger years were filled with play fighting and learning the basic skills of caring and preparing for weapons, health kits, vehicles, and items for spells and protection.
Suddenly, the MoL is overrun by demons and other supernatural entities that were easily coerced into attacking the MoL by the demons. It’s a massacre and the MoL that escape are forced into hiding. Castiel’s mother or Chuck (haven’t decided which or who his mom would even be) is killed protecting him as a distraction while Gabriel grabs Cas and runs. With their family in the wind, Cas and Gabriel are forced to fend for themselves for a time where they grow even closer through the trauma of the attack and the hardships of living on their own. Eventually, they are found by Michael who brings them back to a smaller and harsher order of the MoL, of which Michael is in charge. Under Michael's careful and ruthless planning, younger members are sent out on hunts and those that come back are not the same, physically and mentally. Lucifer, the second-in-command, is a loose cannon but prefers to be in charge of combat and weapons training. He is especially hard on his siblings and Cas received the worst of it, under the impression that his older brother only wants him to learn faster to better protect himself.
Castiel’s first kill is a demon. He cries and throws up afterward because he knows that the woman the demon possessed was still in there. It changes something in Cas. He’s not too different in regular circumstances. He still smiles and laughs with his siblings and enjoys new shows with Samandriel and discovering new spells with Metatron but on hunts, as the cases start to pile up and more lives are lost, he becomes more ruthless and cold. The only focus is destroying the ghost, vampire, werewolf, or whatever the fuck is killing people. Gabriel is always there to pull him out.
One day, Castiel and Gabriel are on a case where they meet a man who says that he has had a demon sighting. WIth his help, Cas and Gabriel find a small demon organization and clean up shop. After a thorough background check and several supernatural checks, Sam is welcomed into the MoL and the Novak clan.
It is unfortunate that there are not any checks to identify a King of Hell of Sam’s caliber though.
Having infiltrated their ranks, Sam makes quick work of sowing discord through the MoL leading to unnecessary deaths in easy cases and ambushes of carefully vetted safehouses. To Cas, it’s just another shitty day as a hunter, but the unusual circumstances surrounding these cases puts him off. However, Cas, Gabriel, and Sam have become fast friends and it’s hard to start accusing a man of such diabolical deeds when you see him as your closest friend, after your siblings.
Through some means, Sam shows his hand and the attempt to destroy or subdue him leads to casualties and afterward Gabriel goes missing. Castiel isn’t worried he’s been kidnapped, as Gabriel keeps in the barest amount of contact with only him, but he does start to become concerned when Sam starts appearing around every corner hinting at some horrible fate awaiting him when he sees Gabriel again.
Sam, as it turns out, is not a man, or King of Hell, easy to shake. No matter the time or place, Sam makes his presence known to Castiel in some strange semblance of the man he pretended to be when they were friends. In fact, Sam brings him gifts that are useful and rare for spells that he’ll eventually need for a hunt or a rare item that Cas was researching on a whim one night. And maybe he should be worried about what this means about his safety, but after the last attack against Sam, most of the MoL are uneasy around him so Cas is prone to keeping to himself at a cabin he repurposed for his own use and he isn’t used to being alone for so long.
Things happen….Cas is at his lowest point. Gabriel isn’t answering his calls and the rest of his family, except for Balthazar and Anna who try to stay in contact under the radar, is barely speaking to him. So Sam offers to make a deal with him which Cas obviously rejects. After careful prodding and subtle hints at how lonely his future is looking, Sam offers to make sure that Cas is never alone again and he agrees in a moment of weakness. When they shake on it, Sam burns a mark on Cas (a la the Mark of Cain perhaps) as a sign of their new connection. Horrified and angry, Castiel who is well learned on demon deals, adds a quick alteration to what he assumes is in Sam’s fine print: Castiel will never be alone and while Sam is going to have some part in that, he will not be attached to Sam for his whole life and it won’t be Sam that stays with him. Sam’s miffed about that but as smart as he is thinks of a quick work around.
When Castiel finally sees Gabriel again, it’s the last time they see each other. Gabriel drops off a baby and says all kinds of weird things about angels, nephilim, and some apocalypse that’s coming but it makes no sense. It’s almost as if he isn’t even speaking to Cas in a language he understands or is even present when he looks at him.
“He’s yours now. He’s yours. You have to take care of him. It’s gotta be you, Cas. You're the only one of us with the brains to keep this whole thing under wraps until it's time. They can’t find him. They’ll kill him. They’ll kill him, Cas. You hear me?”
Castiel vaguely understands the small bits of information that make sense out of all of Gabriel’s rantings and can piece together. As Castiel finds a place to stash the baby for a while, Gabriel disappears leaving a notebook full of markings, sigils, and notes about his visions and the baby. His name is Jack and he is the supposed Antichrist. Sam’s baby. And as Cas thinks on it longer, the culmination of their deal.
Understanding the severity of the situation, Cas manages to appeal to his family and the MoL and is let back into the MoL with the story of his son, Jack, whose mother died in an attack against werewolves soon after Jack was born. The only ones who know the truth are Balthazar, Anna.
A few months pass, Castiel raises Jack as any other child and does what he hopes is a decent job of raising a kid when he notices that Jack is much bigger than an eight month old baby should be. The issue of Jack’s rapid aging is momentarily shelved as an attack against a small band of local hunters, not MoL, is attacked by a blinding light and a noise that pierces and bursts eardrums to the point of insanity.
Why did I do this? Who knows. Part 1?

Single Dads- Overwatch Prt.1 Headcannons
Jesse McCree
His two little girls have him wrapped around their fingers. Jesse can be seen on base entertaining his twins with games, tea parties, and piggyback rides. They both inherited their father's love of western flair and aesthetic much to his delight. Yes, they all have matching boots for special occasions. Their favorite thing to play with when Jesse is away is their play-dough sets and easy bake oven (with supervision from grandpa Rein). When they are old enough to cook with him though he has so many ideas of what to teach them. Grandma’s recipes won’t die out with him.
When Jesse gets back from a long mission all he wants is to cuddle up, it warms his heart when they snuggle up during their favorite Disney movie and nod off. Over the years he has let his hair grow longer than he normally liked just so his girls could play with it (Instead of touching their own. He had a heart attack when the girls had found his electric razor. Aunty Olivia had a field day fixing that mess)
He likes to take them to the gun range when he has time to practice, making sure they have proper safety gear. Don’t need to turn out like their daddy, deaf in one ear, and ringing in the other. He hopes that they will never have to raise a weapon of their own but knows with his line of work and who he is it’s a possibility. If they want to learn how to hold a gun he is probably going to beg Ana to teach them. He doesn’t want them in close combat, that’s an absolute nope.
Hanzo Shimada
Whenever he sees his son his face splits into the most brilliant smile. His infant son squirms in Ana’s arms, trying to get to his dad as he steps off the dropship. Chubby baby arms wave excitedly, impatient to be back in his father's embrace. As he grows he turns into a very giggly and chatty baby who babbles to anyone in a mix of English, Japanese, and Tibetan (thanks to Genji and Zenyatta babysitting). Hanzo adores his son and strives to be a better father than his ever was to him. He’s strict, but never overbearing.
He loves to read to his son whatever he can find, though his favorite is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? Which he reads in English and Japanese till his little one is asleep. When his son can’t sleep he will read it over and over again while his dragons rocking him to sleep.
He encourages his son’s interests whatever they may be at the time. He has saved up a lot of money from mercenary work and what he could take before he fled his home. So he can spend all the money he needs to help fuel his son’s interest.
He regrets that he hadn’t taken more family heirlooms to pass down to his son. Genji often jokes about a bonding trip when his son is older and trained to the old estate. A right of passage taking back what was rightfully theirs. It is a tempting idea… But even without the family trinkets, he will pass down Storm bow, whether his son uses it or not he doesn’t care. The biggest inheritance will be his dragon when the time comes.
Genji Shimada His eldest child is a spitfire, very much like he was in his youth. Thankfully, he tempers it much better than his parents ever did, finding an equal balance between friend and father. He respects her boundaries and she respects his wishes. Whenever she is feeling down she always finds little origami figures all over her room just like when she was little. Really into textiles and engineering. While never admitting it to her father but she one day wants to design him a better, slicker, and lighter body. One as close to flesh as possible. Till then she flourishes with Gabe learning how to sew and make patterns. The holidays are always filled with new custom clothes for the Overwatch members. She is found in the frequent company of Zenyatta. She wants to travel with him one day, to gather inspiration for her fashion and to see what her father saw to make him into the man he is today.
His younger son though is very much like Hanzo when they were little. Reserved and resourceful he spends most of his time with Winston learning what he could from the scientist before dinner. Genji isn’t dull by any sense of the word but the stuff his boy was interested in was just over his head. Has a service dog named Totoro that is always there for him when things get too overwhelming. When things get too much or he is tired Genji loves that his son comes to him for help and advice. To him this is the ultimate show of trust, he wished he could have done this with his father. Normally they just meditate and talk. Other times they go find Satya, who his son loves to talk to.
Christmas and birthdays were always a fun challenge to find things that would keep him stimulated. Last year the highlight had been his very own personal telescope. Courtesy of the science department of Overwatch.
Gabriel Reyes (Pre-fall and After)
His princesa is his world. His crew likes to tease him about his phone usage. 99% of the time he is in the barracks he is glued to it, face-timing his daughter. During the original Overwatch years, his mother and grandmother raised her while he was on tour. It kills him looking back on how he had watched his daughter grow from the scene of his phone. But at the time he believed it was for the best. Now- now he would give anything to be the one to teach her how to walk, her first words, prom, and graduation.
The few times he could visit were glorious. Lots of home cooked meals made together and gifts from the places he had been around the world. Jack and Ana would drop by sometimes as well bringing with them stories and her father’s escapades and foolishness. As his daughter grew she picked up a passion for music and would send sound clips of her music lessons and compositions to him. No one was safe from him showing it off. After the fall and his resurrection, he stayed clear of her, keeping the pictures and recordings saved close to him at all times. Though the holidays are a hard time for him to stay away. Every year her family Christmas tree has a few more presents under it then she bought.
She knows he’s still around and is determined to find a way to bring her father back.
Jack Morrison
Twins are a handful. One he thought he was ready for. I mean, he was able to keep Lena and McCree inline (mostly -but not really). He is a nervous dad at first. Overly prepared, he read every book and online forum. But, self-doubt is a hell of a drug. He gets better over time and the motto of “fake it till ya make it” 100% applies to him.
As Strike-Commander he is in his office a lot. When the twins were newborns, he moved his work to his condo. As they got older he returned to his office and set up an area for the kids. When he is in conference calls it’s always funny to see the toddlers get into frame, or try to get his attention. His office is littered with scribbles and paintings the two did in daycare or while playing with Ana and Reinhardt.
The two have their dad whipped. He won’t admit it but he is wrapped around their fingers. It’s not that he showers them in gifts or lets them make trouble all the time. But he does turn a blind eye to the little things. Missing cookies, a little stain on his chair after he told them no food in his office. Ok, maybe one more scoop of ice cream, but promise me you’ll eat dinner alright? Most nights he can’t read them to sleep. It hurts, but they adjust. He does tuck them in and turns on some read-alongs for them before heading back into the office. The twins are out within minutes blessedly.
Jean-Baptiste Augustin
Twin girls, and he is on top of it. Ultimate chill dad. He gets it. Life is rough, and he is so proud that his girls feel safe coming to him for help. He teaches them how to handle their problems with words not violence. Papa and uncle Mako will take care of it.
Neither girls are interested in medicine, which hurts a little but it’s not his life and he’s proud regardless. He is great with letting them explore their dreams. The eldest follows Bridgette wanting to learn about armor and the youngest (much to his fear) really likes Fawkes and his innate skill with explosives. Praise the gods Athena kept a close eye one them when he had something to show her.
Both are close with Genji’s kids in age. It’s nice for them to have friends that aren’t a bunch of old soldiers. They all like to hang-out on the roof of the base to destress after a day of school or side projects. When the four are together there is a 90% chance the evening will end with a few more grey hairs on the father’s heads.
Cooking is a big part of their family ritual. Baptiste grew up rough and underfeed so there is no way he will ever let his girls feel the same way. He teaches them what few Haitian recipes he knows from heart. Then sometimes they will watch videos and read recipes online of other peoples to try and add to their own books. His paranoia gets the best of him sometimes and he teaches them basic survival skills. They appreciate it and understand his fears. He is open with them about his past and is unashamed to admit his faults.

Hi! I wanted to know if you got my last ask or not. Tumblr sucks like that sometimes. Anyways, I wanted to add my thoughts to the dress ask, because yes! Let Jack wear skirts! I agree that he'd like the floral and pastel dresses, but I also think he'd wear all sorts of patterns, especially merch designs. Just imagine him wearing a star wars dress! (I'm thinking back to the pants that misha had in that one interview thing. You know the one.) He'd probably love all sorts of marvel stuff (and transformers!). And anything very, very poofy! And gabriel would probably be like "oh you like fashion unlike your parents huh? I'm going to take you shopping and you are going to be the best dressed 3 year old in the multiverse" I just really like that headcanon.
[I hope you're having a great day and I hope that tumblr actually works like its supposed to] 💙💙💙
Hmmmm. Intro and I have been having problems with disappearing asks recently. (Would it be too much to ask for you to possibly resend?!)
But yes! I read this next part the same way that I image Marie-Antoinette would say "Let them eat cake!" if she had actually said that. Let him wear skirts!
That would be awesome. He would totally wear Star Wars themed dresses and he would rock them and Charlie would be so proud. (And yes I think I do know the one.)
And he definitely would! I also think he would like the Powerpuff Girls and compare them to Sam, Dean, and Cas, but that's not important.
PLEASE. Gabe being the fun uncle is my favourite thing and they would totally buy matching gold glittery jackets and fedoras and single gold earrings ("Like a pirate!" Jack says.) ("Gabe I'm going to kill you! Dean says)
[Thank you, and you too! Sorry Tumblr has decided to be obnoxious, I'm so glad we got this one!]

Chapter two:
An hour later Dean was standing in front of Castiel's door again, though this time slightly more nervous then he was before. He had finally agreed to go out with him, to at least give Dean a chance to get to know him, and for him to get to know Dean. It was all he had wanted since the first moment he saw Castiel, and now that he had it, he felt like he was going to throw up.
He took a breath to try and steady his raging stomach and rang the doorbell before he could turn and run, and Castiel's two brothers answered the door.
"Dean! Come in!"
The one with the accent reached out and took Dean by the arm and pulled him inside, the other instantly grabbing at Dean and looking him over. "You look great, Dean-o! Cassie will be ready in just a minute."
And as if on cue Castiel came walking down the stairs, a picture of heaven in Dean’s eyes. When he reached the bottom he didn't even have words to say as he stood in front of Dean, and it was one of Castiel's brothers who nudged him out of his trance.
"You look great, Cas!" And he did, all done up in a tight pair of black jeans with a light blue button up, hair mussed just right.
"As do you, Dean."
"Doesn't he though!" Balthazar stepped forwards with Gabriel and both started grabbing and pulling at Dean again, "He's so handsome, Castiel, I'm a little jealous!"
Dean blushed, and Cas stepped towards him to bat his brothers hands away, "I don't know if they introduced themselves or just groped you, but it was probably the latter. These are my brothers, Gabriel and Balthazar. Sometimes they don't know how to keep their hands to themselves."
"Hi, nice to meet you both," Dean shook their hands, then turned back to Castiel, "you ready?"
He eyed Dean for a moment then turned to his brothers, "Are you sure you're okay to watch him? He's never been without me this late at night."
"He'll be fine, Cassie," Gabriel assured, "don't worry and just have fun with Dean."
Cas looked between Dean and back to the stairs a few times, giving Dean an apologetic look, "Whenever you're ready, Cas, take your time."
Cas couldn't help but smile, then looked to his brothers and took a breath, "He's napping right now, but if he wakes up and gives you any trouble just call me and I'll come right back."
"We will be fine, now go," both Balthazar and Gabriel shooed them out the door.
"Alright Dean, let's go."
Cas found himself smiling again when Dean held out his arm for Cas to take and led him down the porch steps and to his car.
~~~~~~~~~~~
They found themselves at a lovely little diner. Nothing too fancy, but honestly just perfect for their first date. Dean had grabbed them a booth in the back, allowing them some quiet privacy to get to know one another. After they had ordered some food, Dean was the first to start asking questions.
“So, tell me about yourself, Cas,” he leaned in and crossed his arms over the table, “tell me about your son. What's his name?”
“His name is Jack, he’s three, as you know, but,” Cas leaned in on the table as well, “Jack is not my biological son.”
“You adopted him.”
“Yes,” he nodded, “though it was under horrible circumstances.”
“My youngest brother’s adopted.” Cas looked up and met Dean's eyes as he explained. “Also not under the best circumstances. My dad’s a cop, and when I was eight and my little brother Sam was four, my dad came home one night with Adam. He was one at the time, and his family had been involved in some kind of accident. I don't remember exactly what, but he had no other family to go to so my dad brought him home, said he could stay with us for a while. And of course we all ended up loving Adam and with my dad being chief of police it was easy for them to officially adopt him a few months later.”
“That was very honourable of your family.”
Dean smiled at Cas, “My folks are good people, and we love Adam.
“Adam was lucky to have fallen into a family like yours.”
“As is Jack's case as well,” Dean chuckled, “your brothers seem like the fun uncle types.”
Cas just shook his head with a grin, “They are crazy, but they all love Jack just as much as I do, and they were there to help me when I suddenly found myself a single parent.”
“If you want to tell me, you can,” Dean reached a hand over the table and placed it on Cas’s arm, “but if you don't want to then that's fine too.”
“I hardly think this qualifies as decent talk for a first date.”
Dean shrugged, “We’re getting to know each other, that includes the good and the bad.”
“I suppose you're right,” he took a breath then looked up to Dean as he explained, “Jack is the son of a very good friend of mine, her name was Kelly. The two of us had been friends since we were in kindergarten together, best friends, completely inseparable. After we graduated highschool I went straight to university, but Kelly decided to take some time off and travel the world. When we were twenty-two she booked a backpacking trip across Europe. She was supposed to be gone for three months, but she showed up on my doorstep not too long after she left and told me she found out she was pregnant.”
“It happened on the backpacking trip?”
Cas shook his head with a shrug of his lips, “I have no idea. Kelly never told me who the father was, or if she even knew herself, and I didn't care. I was going to be there to help her no matter what. So we found her a two bedroom apartment and we spent the next few months after that helping her to prepare for the baby. I helped her get the nursery ready, we had a baby shower for her, I even went to prenatal classes with her. She was just so excited for the baby and so ready to be a mother.”
“You guys were really close,” Dean gave Cas’s arm a squeeze and Cas laid his hand over Dean’s.
“We were, she was like family to us.” As he continued on with the story Cas found himself thoughtlessly stroking his fingers over Dean’s knuckles, it was comforting and grounding. “When Kelly went into labour she was at our house. We were in the backyard sitting by the pool when it happened and instantly I knew something was wrong. I know childbirth is a painful experience but it was different, she was in more pain then she should have been. So we rushed her to the hospital and the doctors allowed her to bring me into the delivery room. She wasn't in labour for long before she gave birth to Jack, and he was only in her arms for a few moments before alarms started going off and I could tell she was fighting unconsciousness.
She suddenly handed me the baby and told me she wanted me to make sure I was the one who took care of him, that I needed to be there for him and make sure he had a good life. She told me I had to be his father. I didn't know what to say, and just before she passed out she called a nurse over and told her that the baby's name was to be Jack Novak, my last name.”
“She knew,” Dean stated with a nod.
“Yes, I think she knew, just as I did, that when she went into labour that there would be complications with Jack’s birth. And as the doctors were examining her and trying to solve the problem, she knew there was a chance that she wasn't going to make it.”
“It was a smart move,” Dean had since taken Cas’s hand in his own and was now running his fingers over Cas’s knuckles soothingly, “giving the baby your last name meant you wouldn't be denied custody even though you're not blood.”
“And that's exactly what the doctors told me,” he nodded, not able to look Dean in the eyes anymore, “because of what Kelly did before she died, I was immediately given custody of Jack and child services was never really involved.”
“Did they find out what the complications were?”
He shook his head, “After they took her to surgery I was left standing in the room, holding a baby, no clue what to do, and not too soon after the doctors came back in and told me that they did everything they could but she just faded. They don't know why the complications occurred or how, but there was nothing they could do. And so I was suddenly left with a baby, a single father in less than twenty-four hours.”
“Well, she chose the right man for the job,” Cas looked back to Dean and he flashed him a small smile, “she knew she could count on you to take care of Jack.”
“I would have done anything for her,” Cas lifted his free hand up to wipe the small tear trying to escape his eye, “and now I would do anything for Jack.”
“Does Jack know about Kelly?”
“I've told him about her, shown him some old pictures,” he nodded, “I didn't think I should dishonour her by pretending she never existed.”
“That's for the best,” Dean agreed, “he deserves to know who his mom was, she sounds like she was an amazing person.”
“She was, and I miss her every day, but I know she watches over Jack,” he smiled, then asked, “does Adam know about his parents?”
Dean nodded, “When he got older my parents told him about them. My dad pulled some old pictures from their files at the precinct, and they took Adam to visit their graves. He still goes occasionally, but he was too young to even remember them when they died. We’re they only family Adam has ever known.”
“And you've all lived here your entire lives?”
“Born and raised,” Dean smiled wide, “I can't imagine moving out of Lawrence. When did you guys move here? Before meeting you at the park that day, I had never seen you or your brothers around.”
“We moved here when Jack was six months old. Our house was already cramped enough as it was with myself, my dad, and my three brothers all living together, and with a baby added in it was just not doable. So we left Ohio and moved here, bought a house with enough space for all of us.”
“You have three brothers?” Dean was staring at Cas with furrowed brows, “I've met two, Gabriel and Balthazar.”
“The third brother you haven't met yet because he works with my dad at his construction company, they are both always out late, his name is Gadreel. He's the youngest, Gabriel is the oldest, then Balthazar, then myself.”
“And Gabriel and Balthazar, what do they do?”
“Gabriel owns a bakery in town, his store has been doing well so he only goes in when they need him to,” Cas laughed as he looked up and saw Dean practically drooling over the table, “I’m sure he would love it if you taste tested for him. And Balthazar owns a nightclub downtown, so he usually leaves around eleven and comes home early morning. And I work mostly from home as an accountant for my dad's company, that way I can take care of Jack.”
“First off, you guys are all so successful!” Cas smiled triumphantly, “And second, any time Gabriel needs a taste tester, and I do mean any time, sign me up!”
Castiel laughed, “I will make sure he knows. And what do you and your family do, Dean?”
“Dad still works as chief of police, my mom has never worked, she always stayed home and took care of us. Sammy, the middle child, is working towards becoming a big shot lawyer, and Adam, the youngest is in med school. As for me, I’m nothing special,” Dean shied away, '' I work with my uncle as a mechanic at his shop. I was never really one for school, so no hot shot job for me.”
Cas shrugged, “Lawyers and doctors are good jobs, but mechanics are extremely attractive.”
Dean perked up at that, squeezing Cas’s hand that he was still holding a little tighter, “You think so?!”
Cas leaned in and smirked, “Do you wear a blue jumpsuit and come home a little dirty sometimes?”
Dean just nodded.
Cas leaned in a little further as he winked and whispered, “Much sexier than any doctor or lawyer I know.”
He couldn't help it if he blushed a little, or a lot, at Cas’s words, and just after that their food arrived. With one last wink sent Dean’s way, and a deeper shade of blush covering his cheeks from it, the two of them ate their food and continued their night locked in conversation.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Dean pulled up to Cas’s house and parked the car, then he jumped out and ran to the passengers side to open his door for him and help him out.
“Thank you,” Cas smiled and allowed Dean to take his hand and walk him to the front door.
“So,” Dean began as he shifted from foot to foot while they stood on the porch, “did you enjoy the night?”
“I did, and,” Cas sighed, turning to look at the door then back to Dean, “as much as I love Jack, it was nice to have a night out, and maybe spending some time without me will be good for him.”
“Does that mean we get to do this again?” Dean asked, a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
Cas smiled, “I would very much like to, but… but this has to go slow, Dean. I do have Jack to worry about and no matter what he always comes first.”
Dean reached down and took both of Cas’s hands in his, “It’s no problem Cas, we can work this at your pace. And as for Jack, whenever you're ready I would love to meet him. If we are going to make this work between us, because I really like you Cas, then I want Jack to like me too. He's as much a part of this as we are.”
“It means a lot to hear you say that, Dean,” he breathed a sigh of relief, “part of the reason why I haven't dated since Jack came into my life is because I was always worried that no one would see him in that way, as a part of the relationship, and I won't have him neglected.”
“He won't be, not while im around,” Dean smiled.
“You are a wonderful man, Dean Winchester,” Cas pulled on Dean's hands and brought him closer, “I am glad you persisted and convinced me to go out with you tonight.”
“Me too, Cas.”
The two leaned in further, close enough now for their noses to be touching, but Dean waited for Cas to take the lead. This was at his pace afterall and Dean was going to make damn sure he didn't do anything to push Cas away.
“Good night, Dean.”
“Good night, Cas,” and it was Cas who tilted up and closed the gap, placing a sweet kiss on Dean's lips.
It didn't last long, but it was more than enough for Dean at the moment, and when they parted he couldn't help the face splitting grin that covered his face as he watched Cas walk inside.
“Call me tomorrow,” Cas said, turning back once he was inside.
“I will,” and Dean was already counting down the seconds until he could wake up and make a second date with Cas.
~~~~~~~~~~~
No sooner than Cas was able to close and lock the door was he very quickly bombarded by all three of his brothers.
“How did it go?!” Balthazar was practically jumping on the spot waiting for an answer.
“Brother, I was surprised to find out from Gabriel and Balthazar that you went on a date tonight. Who was it with?”
Castiel turned his attention towards Gadreel, “I was with Dean Winchester, he’s lived in Lawrence his whole life, and the date went well. We… we are going to go out again.”
Gabriel was the one to freak out this time, practically squealing, “Aren't you glad we told you to give him a chance!”
“I am,” he blushed, “but how was Jack while I was gone?”
“He was fine, brother,” Gadreel answered, “when I got home he was still napping, and when he woke up he did ask where you were, but he settled with watching TV until bedtime. He's sleeping now.”
“I'll go check on him and then I am going to head to bed myself,” Cas quickly hung his coat then began up the stairs, “and thank you all for watching him tonight.”
“Any time, Cassie!”
Rocking the Boat 12
Supernatural AU
Link to Chapter 11
Words: 3,410
Pairings: Gabriel x Reader/Dean x Cas
___________
The next morning you woke up at the foot of the bed with no recollection of how you had gotten there. Once you had slammed your bedroom door and warded it against archangels it was time to hit up the fifth of whiskey that was in your sock drawer.
Moaning, you sat up and looked at the clock. 9:45. You muttered some choice curse words under your breath before hauling your ass out of bed. Maybe if you were lucky, Gabriel wouldn’t start trying to make up until after you had your hangover disappear.
Very funny ...nice hope.
You thought before putting on your sunglasses. Gabriel would probably be parked right outside of your bedroom door. He was probably waiting for the chance to apologize for being an angry jealous doofus. The only question now was, did you want to forgive him?
Part of you said fuck it. He got what he got. The other part was pleading to make up with the archangel. He was, after all, your first boyfriend and you did love him. You couldn’t help having the feeling that if the two of you did break up; Gabriel would go right back to his old ways. Could you really handle the thought of seeing him all over some porn star? You knew that you couldn’t.
You couldn’t help but think how if Gabriel would just have been honest with you then none of this would be happening. You needed the truth..about Rowena, Kali, the porn stars...everything. Gabriel knew everything about you and you knew so little about him.
“A relationship built on dishonesty won’t go far.”
Dean’s words came to mind immediately. You sighed. Here was another prime example of your father being right. Were you going to tell him this news? Hell no!
You were stunned to see no sign of Gabriel outside of your bedroom door when you opened it. Was he already gone and doing his own thing?
When you walked into the kitchen with your sunglasses on Dean looked up with a smile.
“Someone has their hangover goggles on.”
You gave Dean a cold glare before looking around the room. The moment that your eyes landed on Gabriel, you were relieved. He sat across from Cas looking down at the table with devastated eyes. If the two of you had no previous relations, you would have wondered who pissed in his cheerios.
Gabriel only looked up when Dean made the comment about hangover goggles. You were again thankful that he couldn’t see your eyes (or so you stupidly thought). Gabriel looked disappointed as you sunk into the chair beside Jack.
The nephilim turned his attention to you. He spoke in a nice soothing voice that didn’t make your head pound.
“Are you hunger over? Dean said that you would be.”
You winced as Dean slammed the refrigerator door.
“Yeah, he was right. At least I got wasted in my room and didn’t wake up with some stranger that I didn’t know.”
You fought the urge to smile as Dean crossed his arms over his chest.
“How much did you drink?”
“Dad, can we skip the Spanish Inquisition? I really don’t feel great and your voice echoes. Besides I’m an adult. If I was to get plastered it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Dean didn’t say anything but he really didn’t have to. He gave you that parental look of contempt that you knew so well. You got it anytime that you did something that wasn’t too great in his opinion (forget the fact that he drank like a fish a vast majority of the time).
“Fine. Good point. I’m going to fix some sausage, Anyone want some?”
“Dean.”
Gabriel’s voice was calm as you whimpered. The last thing that you wanted to think about was sausage!
“I got the good kind too. It doesn’t have those little hard things in it that gets stuck in your teeth.”
That was all it took to get you out of the chair and making a brisk run to the bathroom.
Gabriel turned his attention back to Dean.
“For being her dad, you really are a shit.”
Dean put a hand on his chest mocking surprise.
“Well forgive me for not wanting my child to become a functioning alcoholic like the rest of us. What do you care anyway? You aren’t her boyfriend anymore!”
After that sentence left Dean’s mouth, he was slammed across the room. Gabriel was out of his seat and slowly approaching Dean with livid glowing eyes.
“You might be her father, however, I have no problem tearing you limb from limb over a comment like that.”
Jack, meanwhile, knew that this was the last thing that you needed to see when you came out of the bathroom. He stood and slowly put a hand on his uncle’s back.
“Gabriel, stop. Y/n won’t be happy seeing this either. You should go check on her.”
Gabriel’s eyes slowly returned to normal before he turned to face Jack. The kid was right. If he wanted to fix things between the two of you throwing Dean across the room was not the solution to his problems.
“I really am convinced that Y/n was raised by a pack of wolves. You are more like her brother then her father.”
Gabriel snapped in Dean’s direction before disappearing.
Meanwhile,
You stood in the bathroom, hovering over the sink. After being able to get up from the toilet, you weren’t sure if you would be able to move far.
“You okay?”
You couldn’t even look up at Gabriel. His voice wasn’t cold or angry. He sounded just like your normal Gabe.
“Yeah, I’m good.”
You said softly. Gabriel didn’t move from his place by the door. If you were in a fighting mood, he didn’t want to get punched.
“I can make you feel better if you want.”
“I’m fine.”
You snapped. Gabriel rolled his eyes. Here was that “Winchester charm” that he loved so much! Nothing about it was charming! You could be the most stubborn human that he had ever had the pleasure of knowing.
“We need to talk about what happened last night and not the part about you being drunk off of your ass.”
You opened your eyes to look at Gabriel through the bathroom mirror. The last thing that you really wanted to see was his “holier than thou” expression glaring at you. Thankfully, he stood looking at you with an expression of worry.
Good...the little shit should be worried!
You thought smugly.
“That isn’t nice.”
Gabriel muttered.
“Stop reading my mind without my permission.”
You hissed before turning to face the archangel. Gabriel held his hands up.
“That is the only option I have at the moment, thank you. You won’t even talk to me.”
Your mouth dropped.
“Well, if this isn’t the pot calling the kettle black! You want me to talk to you but you won’t talk to me about anything! Sorry but that isn’t how it works, Gabriel.”
“So you just want to throw away everything that we have because I didn’t want to talk about my less than glamorous days? I figured that you would just be happy that I wasn’t sleeping around now.”
It was your turn to roll your eyes.
“Well if that isn’t a comforting thought! Look, I am going hunting alone for a few weeks. When I get back I will let you know if you have a girlfriend or not.”
Gabriel was clearly not “thrilled” with this! His golden eyes narrowed on your face and for a moment you were worried.
“That isn’t fair! You want me to just sit here and wait for you to decide what you want? You want me to just sit here in this bunker and wonder if I have wasted the past year of my life.”
You shrugged.
“What is one year to you, anyway? You have had millions of years. You can consider it a little smudge on your record.”
Gabriel’s mouth dropped as he turned and walked from the room.
“Your unbelievable, kid.”
When it came time for you to leave, Gabriel was nowhere to be found. You waited for a moment to see if he popped out of nowhere to beg you to stay. He didn’t.
You turned your attention back to Dean. It didn’t take being Dean Winchester’s daughter to know that he didn’t like this idea. He didn’t like the thought of you hunting alone. Dean knew that you could do it but he didn’t want you to. When you turned down his invitation of Jack tagging along, Dean knew that you “needed” some time.
“I checked the oil in your car and you tire pressure. You should be good to go.”
He said as you threw your bag in the back of your SUV. You closed the hatchback and turned to Dean. He was worried. This was exactly what happened when your own mother died years before. She went on a hunting trip alone and never came home. You could see that same worry in Dean’s eyes now.
To the world, you were Dean’s “sister.” That relationship would stop the questions. Only a few people knew the truth of who you were. People would never believe that you were his daughter anyway.
“I’ll be fine, dad. I won’t be gone long.”
Dean reached out and pulled you into a bone-crushing hug.
“Just be careful. Don’t do anything stupid. If you get into any trouble, you know how to get a hold of Cas.”
You nodded.
“I know, dad.”
As you started to get in your SUV, Dean reached out and grabbed your hand.
“Whatever you decide, with Gabriel, I support you.”
You faked a smile. That was the best that you could come up with at the moment without bursting into tears. You had half expected Gabriel to appear in the passenger seat and not take “get out” as an answer. When he didn’t even show up to tell you goodbye, you wondered if this was his way of saying, “You are right. We shouldn’t be together.”
What you didn’t know, Gabriel was watching. He stood a few feet away keeping himself invisible. He was silently begging you not to go.
The next two weeks were the longest of your life. You were having fun doing some jobs on your own but your heart wasn’t in it like normal. You spent a vast majority of your time drinking in cheap bars. That seemed to be the solution to your problems...just like Dean.
You hadn’t spoken to Gabriel the whole time that you were away. He didn’t reach out once, which surprised you. Did he actually think that you didn’t want to talk to him? Maybe your “tough girl” front actually worked for once! The one time that you didn’t want your stellar attitude to not work it did.
“Good job, Y/n.”
You muttered before downing a shot of whiskey that was in front of you. The bar itself was a little hole in the wall joint that many people didn’t visit. You were thankful for this. The fewer people that may try to talk to you the better off things were!
“Y/n?”
You groaned hearing your name. Slowly turning, you froze seeing none other than Chuck in front of you. This was the last person that you ever expected to see in this shit hole.
“Chuck Shurley. What brings you to this neck of the woods? Wherever the hell we are that is…”
Chuck grinned.
“El Reno.”
You took another sip of your drink.
“Good ole Oklahoma! Great place to be!”
Chuck raised an eyebrow before sliding onto the barstool beside you. He looked over the empty shot glasses in front of you.
“Boy you have really drunk a lot.”
You held up the drink in your hand and toasted him.
“Stick around, pal. I am about to get plastered.”
Chuck winced.
“How about we go back to your hotel room and watch Twister or something”
You laughed.
“You know that movie has always got me! How many Bill Paxtons does it take to want to slam your head against a wall? God, there are some poorly ass written characters in that movie! All we see is couples arguing. Its like the Lifetime of disaster films.”
Chuck smiled.
“Yeah, I have to agree with you there too. So why are you here alone and drinking like a fish?”
You chuckled.
“Just got a lot on my mind.”
“Gabriel, perhaps?”
You almost spit your drink when Gabriel’s name left Chuck’s mouth. Sitting down your drink, you turned to face the man at your side. Chuck smiled.
“How do you know about Gabriel?”
Chuck waited for your slight drunken stupor to go away.
“I know everything.”
He replied with a smirk. You were silent for a moment as you contemplated what Chuck’s comment meant.
“What number am I thinking about?”
“Y/n, that isn’t nice...32.”
You scooted your bar stool back slightly.
“Lucky guess.”
Chuck sighed before snapping his fingers and left you totally sober.
“Chuck, what are you?”
You asked. Chuck smiled. He knew it was time to clue you in on what exactly he was. It was evident that Dean and Cas hadn’t told you. Chuck snapped his fingers again. This time he let you see JUST who he was. Your mouth dropped.
“Fuck...shit...crap…”
Chuck laughed.
“That’s the reaction that most people have as well.”
You sat quietly a few moments trying to take everything in that just happened. Chuck was God. He knew about Gabriel and yourself as a couple. Oh, hell that meant he knew exactly WHAT you had been doing with Gabriel!
“Yeah, I know about that too. It would be great if you would stop thinking about what you have done with my son.”
You looked up.
“Sorry but not sorry? Well, you don’t have to worry about it...we aren’t together right now anyhow.”
Chuck ordered you a glass of water and held it out to you innocently.
“Here have some water and count to ten. Everything with Gabriel will be just fine! That is actually why I am here…”
You held a hand up.
“No offense Chuck but I don’t really want any help in my fucked up relationship with an archangel.”
Chuck smiled.
“It isn’t fucked up. This is exactly how I planned it!”
You looked up with a disturbed expression.
“How you planned it? Wait, you planned this? Why in the world would you want this for your son? Are you some kind of sick in the head bastard or something?”
Chuck giggled at that.
“You sound just like your father. It's so amusing...almost like the cat blog that I run. Gabriel is the only archangel that I would have chosen this for. Michael is too bossy. The two of you would never get along. Raphael is well dead because of Castiel. Lucifer is Lucifer and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. That would leave Gabriel. He has the most capacity to care and love. My son is exactly how I want him to be...mostly...okay he can be when he wants to. Sometimes, he is a pain in the ass.”
“I guess I can agree with you there. Look, Chuck, God,...”
“Just Chuck.”
He replied with a bigger grin. You blinked a few times.
“...Okay ...Chuck...I don’t want Gabriel to be with me just because it's some creative scheme that you came up with for your Supernatural books. I want him with me because he wants to be.”
Chuck held a hand up again.
“He is! He wants to be with you! He loves you...very deeply. Yeah, the two of you fight like cats and dogs but I know that you both love each other. That is why I want you to have a nephilim.”
You dropped the glass of water that you were holding.
“Excuse me? Did you just say what I thought you said?!? What kind of sick in the head Dr. Frankenstein monster are you?”
Chuck sighed.
“I’m not sick in the head. This is a good idea.”
You stood up off of your bar stool and quietly pointed your finger at Chuck not saying anything for a few moments.
“1. I am not dying because you want to play grandpa! 2. Lucifer already beat you to the nephilim punch! Go play with Jack! He’s a lovely boy!”
This was the biggest bunch of bullshit that you had heard in a long time!
“You are making this harder than it should be, Y/n. Even Mary didn’t give us this much trouble.”
“Chuck this isn’t the second fucking coming! I swear, Chuck, all that you do is screw with our family! Why don’t you go screw with the Joneses for a change...give the Winchesters a break. We’ve earned it!”
You motioned the bartender over for another shot of whiskey. Chuck eyed the drink in your hand.
“I wouldn’t drink that.”
“And why the hell not? I think I earned a drink for not trying to punch you.”
Chuck was too innocent and giddy for his own good.
“You are already pregnant. Lucky for me that you and Gabriel have sex like bunnies.”
That was the last thing that you expected! You were pregnant?! How did you not realize it! Better yet...what were you going to tell your own father?
Chuck reached out and took your hand in his.
“I want to address your concerns. You are not going to die because I planned this. Lucifer creating a nephilim was not part of the divine plan. I do find it regrettable that Kelly Kline had to die. She seemed like a lovely woman. I agree with you, I am sure that Jack is a lovely kid but he doesn’t have the fight family lineage. You being a Winchester just makes all of this easier!”
You put your head down on the bar and tried to take everything in. This was more than your brain could handle at the moment. Looking back up, you frowned.
“Chuck, I have been drinking an insane amount of booze over the past week…”
Chuck silenced you.
“Lucky that the baby’s father is an archangel, huh? Gabriel’s grace kept the baby safe while you participated in less than ideal behavior.”
“Hey, you are the one that just showed up, pal.”
You looked down at your feet before laughing.
“So I don’t get an archangel to tell me the great news like Mary did? Seems kind of like a rip-off.”
Chuck put a hand over his face.
“I can go get Gabriel and have him tell you if you would like?”
It was your turn to laugh hard at that! Gabriel was going to freak the fuck out! There would be no calm archangel coming to tell you anything. Gabriel would be straight up ready to burn the world down!
“Chuck, you’re telling Gabriel and I am going to watch. You are also going to tell Sam and Dean. You better be ready to do some godly magic too.”
Chuck’s eager grin faded. Apparently, he was realizing that telling his hot-headed son and your family was going to be a rather “miserable” experience!
“So you are agreeing to all of this?”
You held your hands up in frustration.
“It seems like I don’t really have much of a choice! I’m already pregnant and I don’t think that there is no getting rid of the thing inside of me. I swear, Chuck if I die because of this I will be haunting your ass! I will follow you around and make the most obnoxious noises for the rest of eternity!”
Chuck held out his hand. You slowly reached out as he grabbed yours and shook it eagerly.
“You won’t die! You have my word. Now, I suppose we should get back to Kansas and tell Gabriel.”
You laughed bitterly and pulled your coat on.
“Better bring you a helmet.”
This is not a Destiel story
Sneak preview: Episode 3
Chapter/episode 3: Something wicked this way comes…..
“What’s up Bro?” Gabriel sat down in front of me throwing his feet on the table.
I reached up and swept them off. “Get your feet off the table.” I glared at my comedian brother.
“You don’t have to be so mean?” Gabriel scrunched up his eyebrows and placed his feet in front of me.
“I wasn’t being mean, you were being rude.” I knew I was probably being to harsh, but all I really wanted to do was get back to Samantha and see if she was ok. I buried the picture of her laying on her bed in the bunker, helpless and pale deep in the back of my brain.
Gabriel sat back in his chair. Back in the olden days before my promotion Gabriel could have kicked my butt or snapped his fingers and I would have turned to dust. Non of the Angel’s approved of my promotion but Gabriel backed the decision and even stood up for me.
I brought my hand up to the bridge of my nose and closed my eyes. “I’m sorry Gabriel, I’m the one being rude. I’ve been dealing with a lot.”
“Hey Cas, No worries.” Gabriel rested his arms on the table. “What’s going on?”
“Naomi said you saw Uriel talking to Beezlebub?” I put my arms on the table and folded my hands.
“No brother. What is going on with you?” Gabriel looked at me seriously, starring at me.
I just looked at him for a few moments then gave in. “I’m just dealing with some stuff, that as an angel, should not be an issue.”
“You like one of the Winchester girls, don’t you?”
“What? No!” I leaned back in my chair and smiled. I could tell he wasn’t buying it. He just looked at me.
“Castiel, Cas, Bro, every angel worth his wings have fallen for a human at least once. Look at me I fell for several in one night.” His eyebrow lifted and a half smile fell along his lips. “My point is, you can’t beat yourself up about it. Dad may not have given us souls, but he gave us emotions and grace which is basically the same thing. Sometimes you have to just make you happy and stop worrying about everything else.”
“Yeah, I already did that with their grandfather and their great uncle and look were it got us?”
“What? Saved? Resurrected? You got a promotion.” He pointed towards me.
“Lucifer let loose twice, invasion of the Leviathan, heaven being closed, angels being kicked out of heaven, father almost destroying the world…need I go on?”
“Stop dwelling in the past, bro. Dad left this world to you and went off to do his own thing. You can do what ever you want.”
“That’s another thing, he left me responsible for this whole thing. I don’t have time to indulge my fantasy’s.”
Gabriel shrugged his shoulders at me. “Well, if you would like me to keep an eye on those girls, I would be happy to oblige.”
“NO!” I sat up, “I mean no thank you.” I smiled trying to take some of the harshness out of my voice.
“I think it is already too late for you, brother.” Gabriel smiled that devilish smile of his.
“So, about Uriel?” I choose to ignore his statement even though I was already thinking about popping in at the bunker to check on Samantha, in invisible mode of course. I just wanted to make sure she was healing and she was ok.
“I saw him venturing to Earth after you told him not to, so I decided to follow him. He was meeting with Beezlebub and talking about the plan being messed up. And they were looking for a plan B option. They sent some demons off to do something but I wanted to get out of there before they realized I was around.
“I have to go check on something. When I get back-“ I stood from my chair and walked towards the door. “We are going on a trip.”
“Checking on the Winchester girl?” Gabriel asked loudly.
“Shut up Gab!” I opened the door and walked out towards the portal to Earth.
It didn’t take long for me to enter the bunker, Deanna and Jack were watching TV and throwing popcorn at each other. He looked happy, they both did. I left the room and walked towards Samantha’s room. She laid on her belly on her bed. She was writing something. I walked over and looked over her shoulder.
I’m sorry Castiel. I didn’t mean to put everyone-
Then she stopped writing, crinkled up the paper, and threw it in the trash. I looked over by the trash and a pile of wadded up papers were scattered everywhere. Samantha stood up from the bed and threw the pen across the room. “This is stupid!”
“You’re being stupid Castiel.” She yelled as she looked up towards the ceiling. “Get your feathery butt down here and stop it already.” I assumed it was her way of praying. I laughed quietly at my self.
Samantha paused and looked around the room. Crap! I forget they could hear me in invisible mode. She shook her head, “I’m fucking going insane now. GREAT!”
I followed her out of the room and to the kitchen and watched her open the fridge and grab a beer. She paused and looked over at the liquor cabinet, then replaced the beer, closed the door and walked over to the bar. Grabbing one of the very expensive whiskey bottles and poured herself a drink. She grabbed the drink and went and sat at the table.
“You really shouldn’t drink so much Sam.” Deanna said as she went into the kitchen and opened the fridge pulling out some juice and then pouring herself a glass.
“Go back to your angel boyfriend Dee. Just leave me alone.” I saw her tip back the glass and take a big swig.
“Cas will come back. He just is really busy. It’s probably hard looking after us, being responsible for heaven and earth, and trying to figure out who is messing with the order of things.”
“He left me here, Deanna. No one was here, I could have been in a coma or something.” She drank on her drink again. “He didn’t care if I lived or died.”
It took everything I had to not appear and wrap her in my arms and tell her she was wrong. Why couldn’t she understand I was trying to protect her. She had put herself in that bar because she was upset at me and what I had to do to keep my distance. She could have lost her soul, her life because she was trying to get away from me.
“No he didn’t Sam, and you know it.” She walked towards the family area where Jack was still watching T.V.
She didn’t respond, just got up poured herself another drink and then walked back towards her room. There was nothing more I could do here and returned to Gabriel. “Come Brother, let’s go hunt our self a couple of disobeying Angels.”
“Alright! Fun at last,” Gabriel said. “How’s the girlfriend?”
“Shut up Gab!” we spread our wings and took off to hell. I had to speak to the king himself. Find out if he knew anything.
Fallin all in you
How any guest at a wedding could actually enjoy themselves would always be unexplainable to Castiel. He sighed deeply and looked over to his left where his son Jack was happily eating a pice of cake, entertaining half of their table by how adorable he looked by doing so. He smiled at his son and removed a few crumbles from his sons dress shirt.
It was the day of his favorite brothers wedding; he really should be happier... It wasn’t that he didn’t feel thrilled about the fact that his brother was finally settling down with the love of his life, it was just that it reminded him way to much of his own wedding six years ago. He had adored his wife Amelia and had been over the moon with the news of her pregnancy shortly after their wedding. It had been just like he had imagined how his life would go, until his beloved wife died two days after having their son. When he was honest with himself, he had been hiding himself with Jack and his work in his own little bubble, working at home and avoiding all kinds of human interactions besides walks to the playground and shoppingtrips. His brother Gabriel had always been by his side, especially while the first horrible year after Amelias death lasted and Castiel had been overwhelmed with grief and the novelty to care for an infant. But as a team, it had worked out. Then four years ago, Gabriel had found his groom. Of course Castiel had met the man that had stopped Gabriels endless affaires and had been pleasantly surprised by him. His brothers usual preferences were tall and gorgeous blonde women with great curves, Sam Winchester was the complete opposite. Well, he was tall and very handsome; but also very much a man. He was a lawyer from Lawrence that had opened his own law firm with his brother and their uncle shortly after graduating Stanford and they seemed to be pretty successful doing so. Gabriel had often tried to tempt Castiel to meet Sams family but Castiel had always declined. Meeting new people if he didn’t absolutely had to wasn’t exactly his favorite thing.. He tried to work on himself to get outside more, mostly for Jack because his son loved humanity, but still he avoided groups of people. But obviously there was no way of getting around his brothers wedding. It was a nice and rather intimate party of around fifty people, but it still felt overwhelming. Also it hadn’t really helped that Sam’s elder brother Dean was the most handsome man Castiel had ever laid eyes on. He tried not to stare at the gorgeous figure next to Sam who appeared to be very outspoken and open. As soon as Castiel had seen him for the first time this very morning, he had stopped wondering why Gabriel wouldn’t shut up about the Winchester’s. Obviously he loved Sam, but he also genuinely liked Dean, which seemed to be very fun to talk to and a true friend. Also he had played with Jack for a while and Castiels heart had melted faster than he would ever admit. But even though everyone seemed to love Dean, Castiel had felt absolutely intimidated by his beauty and had merely managed to say hello to him. He hated himself sometimes for being this bad around people, but he couldn’t help himself. When Amelia had been by his side, he had felt safer and his social anxiety had been quieter. But now that he was alone there was no getting around it anymore. He sighed again and watched how his brother listened in awe to a story Sam was telling the group. Gabriel deserved to be this happy. Being lost in his thoughts, Castiel hadn’t noticed that Jack had finished his cake and jumped happily to his feet. „Daddy, can I go over and play with Boomer, please?“ Castiel nodded at his son and smiled as the boy ran after Sams huge golden retriever. A hand appeared on his shoulder and he looked up to see Gabriel taking Jacks seat. „How are you doing, little bro? You seem lonely, buddy.“ Gabriel looked at him with his usual worried expression. Castiel really didn’t wanted him to be worried at his own wedding so he plastered a smile to his face. „It’s fine. I’m just not used to be surrounded by so many people. But it really is a nice Party, Gabe. I’m so happy for you guys.“
„I know you are. Just want you to have fun, too. But we’re gonna dance in a few, thought I’d give you a warning. I bribed Dean to sing for our wedding dance, try not to drool on the tablecloth.“ He winked at him and walked over to Sam who held out a bottle of whiskey to Dean, who seemed a little less self secure while he nervously fumbled a guitar out of it’s case.
Sing? That intelligent, gorgeous, kind and funny man could also sing? Did that man had no flaws at all..? Castiel nipped at his champagne as he watched him take a big gulp out of the bottle his brother offered him. „You really sure you want that stupid song?“ He heard Dean ask Sam while he flushed and covered his eyes with the bottle for a moment. „Yes that one. Please Dean.“ Yeah, yeah. No need for puppy eyes.“ Dean took another big gulp and started to tune the guitar as Gabriel proudly announced their first dance as a couple. The other guests stopped their conversations and gathered around the couple and Dean. Jack and Boomer came running to Castiel, the dog sat down next to him and his son climbed on his lap and snuggled into his arms. He pressed a kiss to his head and looked up again, only to see the eyes of a smiling Dean on him.
And wow, that smile could end wars. He flushed and managed to smile back, hating himself for being shy as a teenager. Sam kissed Gabriels hand and got the smaller quirky man into a dancing position as Dean played a soft melody. They moved slowly as Dean started to sing, but Castiel was too mesmerized by his voice to really watch the dance. It was just a stupid romantic Popsong, but Deans voice was deep, and just as beautiful as the man himself.
„Be my summer in a winter day love
I can't see one thing wrong
Between the both of us
Be mine, be mine, yeah
Anytime, anytime
Ooh, you know I've been alone for quite a while
haven't I? I thought I knew it all
Found love but I was wrong
More times than enough
But since you came along“
Castiel felt like crying. He had goosebumps all over his body and couldn’t tear his eyes away from Dean who stared at his guitar with the most beautiful blush on his cheeks.
„I'm thinking baby
You are bringing out a different kind of me
There's no safety net that's underneath, I'm free
Falling all in
You fell for men who weren't how they appeared, yeah
Trapped up on a tightrope now we're here, we're free
Falling all in you“
He hugged his son closer to his chest and tried to look normal. With every second he felt how he lost more and more of his heart to this man that he hadn’t even really ever talked to.
„Every time I see you baby I get lost
If I'm dreaming, baby, please don't wake me up
Every night I'm with you I fall more in love
Now I'm laying by your side
Everything feels right since you came along“
How could one man be this perfect? Castiel felt like he could see the depth of his glowingly beautiful soul while he sang and gave up looking normal. He thanked heaven for creating this song, the perfect moment and Dean himself.
Dean ended the song by playing the soft melody for a moment longer before everyone started clapping. Castiel was still overwhelmed by his feelings and felt frozen. As usual, Jack brought him back to reality by asking very loudly; „Daddy, why are you crying?“ He looked at his son whose tiny hands started to wipe tears from his cheeks. „Sorry darling, I didn’t notice. I really liked the song.“ Jack beamed at him. „Me too! Dean is awesome, right dad?“ Castiel nodded fiercely and prayed that no one else had noticed just how much he had liked it. Jack laughed happily and jumped back to his feet to try to get Boomer to do a wedding dance with him as well.
„So, I’m awesome, huh?“ Castiel almost dropped his glass when Dean appeared right in front of him and nervously scratched his neck. „Stupid song, but Sammy really likes it. This seat taken?“ He pointed at the empty seat next to Castiel who stared at Dean dumbfounded and managed to make an inviting gesture to the chair. „Cool. So, how come a gorgeous man like you is hiding all alone over here? You are Castiel, Gabs little brother, right? Shame we haven’t really met before.“ Castiel blushed even more and nodded lightly, unable to stop staring into Deans eyes. „He mentioned you’d be hot so I had to check you out...“ He grinned sheepishly. „Any chance a guy could hope to dance with you later?“ Castiels mouth dropped open. „You? With.. me?“ „Yeah, you down? I didn’t manage to find a date for the wedding, well thank god for that! Would have been awkward to dump a stranger at my brothers wedding to hit on the best man.“ He laughed nervously. „Err.. Yes. Yes I would like that.“ „Great! So you having a good time here? I heard you are a...“ Castiel accidentally interrupted him midsentence. „Do you know how breathtakingly gorgeous you are?“ He tilted his head and stared into Deans eyes. „There’s just no way you are also a nice person. You are a lawyer, so I guess you have to be pretty smart, your voice makes me cry, your face and your body are worth being sculpted into marble and you seem great with people. There can’t be a perfect human being. You have to have flaws.“ Dean looked shocked at Castiels speech, but laughed then. „No one ever described me as perfect.“ He smiled and put his hand to Castiels cheek. „But if you have to know, I’m pretty impulsive sometimes.“ Cas smiled at Dean as he moved closer, waited for a moment as they were only an inch apart and kissed him.
For Two
A Supernatural Fan-fiction
Featuring: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Gabriel x Rowena, and Jack
Word Count: 1580
Entry for @winchesterprincessbride ‘Jen Said What?’ Challenge
Prompt #22: If you loved me you would have bought me ice cream.
Summary: Predictable Whammied Winchester Silliness.Do not read too into this. xoxo Stu
“I mean, it can’t be all bad,” Dean cocked his head as he watched the woman across the hallway. They were waiting outside a hospital room to speak to the latest victim in a series of bizarre hallucination sparked panic attacks. The young mother, with a very pregnant stomach, was entertaining a three-year-old girl as they waited for the elevator. “Otherwise we would have died out long ago.”
“Dean, it’s like possession, but for ten months,” Sam shook his head at his brother’s line of reasoning. “And then you have another person to take care of on top of it.”
“Jack turned out okay,” Dean muttered. “Plus, I am great with kids.”
“Well, good thing you can’t get pregnant, otherwise you would be even more moody,” Sam hissed, confounded that this conversation was still happening.
Dean didn’t say anything but the way his face pinched, then softened, as the idea of mindless eating surfaced, earned Dean one of Sam’s bitchiest faces.
“Don’t-”
Luckily for them both, the nurse invited them into the victim’s room.
^*^
Gabriel and Jack returned from the morgue with matching Dum Dum suckers in their mouths. Jack was grinning and trying to balance the candy in his excited mouth without drooling. It would have been gross, if he wasn’t so adorable. The nephil had started to grow on his blood Uncle. Even though the Winchesters only trusted them together in small stretches, those boys were para-noid.
“So, Jack, you settled on being a hunter or are you keeping your options open?” Gabriel watched the innocent young man with the mischievous of millennia in his eyes.
“Uh, well, Sam and Dean help people. I want to be able to do that, like Cas though, since, we have some powers still.”
“Yeah, but won’t it get boring? Always having to go to everyone else’s rescue, not much fun if you ask me.”
“But hunting is a job. Jobs aren’t supposed to be fun. There’s fishing and music and friends for that.” Jack gave Gabriel a serious look, explaining to him as if he was the man-child.
“Yeah, okay, well, looks like you’ve made up your mind,” Gabriel smacked his lips dramatically. “Oh well.”
“Is that bad?”
“No, I was just curious if you wanted to hang out with your Uncle Gabe for a while. Road trip, see the world, get an Archangel’s tour of the family land.”
“That could be very insightful,” Jack pondered. “Could Cas come? He seems like he could use a vacation.”
“Uf! Man, I don’t know, that one has had so many sticks up his ass I don’t know if he will ever have fun,” Gabriel groaned. “We’ll see.” He folded when he saw the bright hopefulness in Jack’s blue eyes.
Finally, the dark suits of Winchesters in uniform crossed the street and met the equally dressed up celestial beings. “I’m thinking Tulpa,” Sam looked to Gabriel for his take.
“Ooooo, a manifested deity, nice. But, no. Sorry, boys, there were no symbols and everyone had a different hallucination before either croaking or being sedated.”
They retreated to a nearby dinner for lunch and continued to piece together the case. Sam tutted over Dean’s sodium intake and Gabriel flirted with the waitress. In all, the case went smoothly, which Gabriel was grateful for, because he wanted everyone to be nice and relaxed once they got home.
^*^
“Who let you in?” Dean snapped at the tiny woman waiting for them in the library. Sam and Dean shared a look, which ended in a Winsynced, “Maggie.”
“Hell-o, Gorgeous,” Gabriel crooned, sneaking a kiss to the witch’s neck.
Dean’s mouth gaped like a fish as Sam and Jack gave him wilted looks.
“Uh, Gabe, buddy, you gotta let us know when you have, *cough* skanks *cough* over,” Dean said to the angel’s back as he continued to snog Rowena.
“What’s that? Oh, sure, you got it, Dean-o,” Gabriel agreed all too quickly, while Rowena cast daggers at the surly hunter trying to keep some semblance of order in his home.
“At least get a room, guys, geez!”
“He’s right, though I do love the, ambience of ancient tomes, pet. A little privacy would be nice,” Rowena purred as she let her magic tickle Gabriel in all the right places. Gabriel snapped his fingers and they were both naked behind locked doors.
^*^
The next morning, Dean woke up feeling like he was wearing a dwarf as a fanny pack. After a quick shower, during which he could have sworn he felt his nipples leak beneath the heat of the water, he became grouchy. When the smells of breakfast hit him, he nearly gagged, choosing to bypass the kitchen entirely. He spent the morning with Jack in the firing range, though his back got increasingly sore the longer he stood.
“Everything okay, Dean?” Jack’s soft voice shouted over the earmuffs.
“I’m good, kid.” He wasn’t.
Later that afternoon he had to restart his show three times because he kept missing parts of different scenes. He had kicked off his socks because they seemed to be pinching at his feet. He was bored and restless, so he decided to wash his Baby. But his legs nearly gave out when he leaned too far over to scrub the rims. He was not suddenly this old, was he?
^*^
Eventually, Dean lumbered into the kitchen, finding Sam back from a supply run. Finally. He rifled through the grocery bags before groaning and turning back to the hallway.
“What?” Sam tisked at the look of disappointment on Dean’s face.
“Nothing, forget it.” He turned and shuffled out of the room.
“You’re leaving the pie untouched?” Sam’s voice tightened.
“You know, if you loved me you would have bought me ice cream,” Dean whined. Actually whined, not growled or barked. Sam froze and then he swallowed.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Dean shifted uncomfortably, bowed legs in a wide stance and his stomach jutted out. “Nothing, I just wanted ice cream and now I will have to get it myself.”
“Since when do you pick ice cream over pie?!”
“Since I can’t keep a thought in my damn head, my feet are swollen and my back hurts. I just needed ice cream, Sammy. Just ice cream.” Dean snapped.
“Dean?” Sam approached with caution.
“What?”
“Are you having any other, uh, symptoms?” Sam was still crouched in concern.
“I keep getting these like phantom pains in my gut and my clothes feel tight, but everything still looks okay.” Dean huffed, “I just figured it was gas.”
Sam grimaced at the thought. “Uh, this might sound crazy, but I think you’re pregnant?” Sam pursed his lips and cocked his head.
“Shut up, very funny.” Dean rolled his eyes, noticing too late that he was fondly stroking his stomach.
“No, I’m serious, everything you just said sounds like pregnancy, man.” Sam pulled out a chair to catch Dean just in time. “I mean, obviously it is a psychological pregnancy, because you look the same, but you got whammied.”
And before Dean could say anything else, realization dawned on both of their faces.
“Witch first, ice cream after.”
“What? Why?! You won’t want the ice cream after.”
“Good point.”
They stared at Rowena as she glared back, hands raised, ready for anything they threw at her.
“Whaaaaaaat is going on here?” A well-timed voice interjected. Gabriel sauntered into the War Room, eyes squinted as he took in the impending battle between the hapless hunters and the ginger witch.
“She hexed me,” Dean barked, free hand pinching the small of his back.
“Uh, no, tub-o, that was me,” Gabriel snapped his fingers, the phantom weight and emotion falling off Dean like a bucket of ice water.
Dean gasped, rolling his shoulders as he straightened to lock eyes on the angel. “What the hell would you do that for?!”
“Perhaps, Gabriel, knows when a man needs to be knocked down a peg or two,” Rowena sniffed at Dean, who was still flummoxed.
“What even gave you the incentive, man,” Sam asked, curiosity always beating out better judgement.
“Um, hello, I am the archangel, Gabriel. You have read about me,” he prodded. “I may have turned a young girl’s entire life upside down by informing her of a similar circumstance?” He plopped down on the nearest table, leaning against his elbow in a dramatically inspired lazy importance.
“You’re talking about Mary, the Virgin Mary?” Dean demanded.
“Ding-Ding-Ding! Very good, Mama, now there are some things men think to be a breeze that they have, no, justifiable, claim to. Childbearing is one of them, cuz it aint all binge eating and being waited on. Dean-o here needed a little dose of reality, with a side order reminder to be R-E-S-P-E-C-T-ful,” Gabriel quipped.
Rowena’s deep chuckle broke through the awkward glances and sheepish stammering. “Well done, I’d say, couldn’t have thought of a better lesson myself, dear. Now, shall I be on my way?”
Sam and Dean shared a look and shrugged, Rowena clipped away up the winding staircase without waiting for their permission. Sam waved after her, remembering too late that she wasn’t giving him the time of day.
Jack entered, intrigued by the raised voices. He remained puzzled but smiled sadly as Rowena closed the door. “I didn’t get to say goodbye. Hey, is she going to come with on our World Tour, Uncle Gabriel?”
Sam and Dean both turned on the Archangel in alarm.
For that one ship meme: any Invisible person you feel like doing. Don't overload yourself, though.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I wasn’t sure which one to pick, so have all of them
Scientific Romance (Arthur Kemp/Jack Griffin/Flora Cranley/Rosemary Carew/Henry Jekyll(/Jack Griffin)) [Monster AU]
When or if I started shipping it: For a while now. As it currently is? Uh… Our conversations on Discord would imply since early September of last year, given the development between Rosemary and Flora.
My thoughts: It’s cute? It’s a lot of fun to come up with things for all of them? Maybe too much fun even?
What makes me happy about them: They’re all dorks in love and it’s great.
What makes me sad about them: Universal will never have the balls to make Griffin/Kemp canon, let alone this. …Then again, Universal had the “brilliant” idea of trying to cast Johnny Depp as Griffin (which I still think was terrible casting), so maybe it’s for the best that they don’t try to do something like this. (Plus, you and I both know how bad The Umm turned out. I can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing their new take on my favorite of their monsters)
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I’m kinda concerned that a hypothetical fanbase for this AU would:
Ignore that they’re all in a happy, consensual relationship
Ignore that none of them are straight and only focus on Jack/Flora and/or Henry/Rosemary
Fetishize Flora/Rosemary and ignore that they’re both also happy with Jack and Henry respectively
Fetishize either Jack/Arthur and/or Jack/Henry and either act like Flora and Rosemary don’t exist or treat them like they’re evil and “in the way” of one of those relationships
Things I look for in art/fic: I’d be impressed if someone besides us wrote about them at all, to be honest.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Eh.. The closest thing I can think of is an AU where Jack was nicer to Thomas Marvel and they also got together and maybe things ended up working out with Henry and Gabriel Utterson. Other than that… I dunno.
My happily ever after for them: I just want them all to be happy.
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Just relaxing together and enjoying when things aren’t falling apart around them.
Invisible Poly-Square (Kitty Carroll/Helen Manson/Geoffrey Radcliffe/Frank Griffin(/Kitty Carroll)) [Monster AU]
When or if I started shipping it: The moment we started figuring out how to fit both Kitty and Geoffrey into this AU.
My thoughts: They are incredibly sweet. I love them.
What makes me happy about them: Everything? They’re just great?
What makes me sad about them: I’d say “Universal would never make it canon” but… Well, see the previous one for why that doesn’t bother me.
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I have a few of the same concerns for this ship as I would for the previous one.
Things I look for in art/fic: I’d be impressed if it existed at all, especially given the… lack of popularity regarding both Invisible Man Returns and Invisible Woman.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I dunno.
My happily ever after for them: That they’re happy at all.
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Just being near each other and enjoying a quiet moment together, all four of them.
Dr. Jekyll/Claude Griffin/Mr. Hyde [Mad Monster Party/Mad Mad Mad Monsters]
When or if I started shipping it: Oh gosh, uh… shortly after watching Mad Monster Party for the first time, if not during the first time seeing it.
My thoughts: Best MMP couple. No contest.
What makes me happy about them: I think they’re just fun to think about in general, especially as a way to explore the idea of Jekyll and Hyde both being in love with the same person and that person loving them both back (and with someone who already knows they’re both in the same body).
What makes me sad about them: …Does anyone even care that much about the movie they’re from?
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I’m pretty sure Mad Monster Party/Mad Mad Mad Monsters fic doesn’t exist.
Things I look for in art/fic: That it exists to begin with.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I don’t know, but I definitely don’t see Claude getting back with Nagatha.
My happily ever after for them: They escaped Baron Boris’ island together and are happily starting a new life with each other.
Their favorite non-sexual activity: For Jekyll and Claude: just talking about things together. For Claude and Hyde: causing mischief.
Henry Frankenstein/Nagatha [Mad Mad Mad Monsters]
When or if I started shipping it: After I tried thinking about what Nagatha would do with her life after divorcing Claude (let’s face it that marriage wasn’t meant to last) and thought about her maybe going to assist Henry Frankenstein.
My thoughts: They’d be a much better match than Nagatha and Claude.
What makes me happy about them: I enjoy the thought of them working together while also breaking the animated formula of having the Invisible Man with the Invisible Woman (fuck you, Hotel Transylvania).
What makes me sad about them: It’s gonna take some time to think of a way for them to get together that doesn’t feel forced. Not like I can do much worse than the actual relationships in that special though.
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: lol implying Mad Mad Mad Monsters fic exists
Things I look for in art/fic: That they exist to begin with.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I dunno, just don’t have Nagatha and Claude get back together.
My happily ever after for them: I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Science!
Boobula/Ghoul [Mad Mad Mad Monsters]
When or if I started shipping it: A little less than a week after we first watched Mad Mad Mad Monsters together, apparently.
My thoughts: I think they’d be great boyfriends. They’re vampire-invisible person solidarity, which is honestly underrated. A vampire can see things that other humans can’t. Things like an invisible person. So Boo would have no problem actually seeing his invisible boyfriend, things that others usually wouldn’t be able to see.
What makes me happy about them: I like to think they’d have a gradual childhood friends-to-lovers kind of romance and they’re already so close that it takes a while for them both to realize they have romantic feelings for each other.
What makes me sad about them: That some dipstick gave one of them the name “Boobula” like who tf does that I don’t know of anyone else who ships it.
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: That would require for said fic/art to exist to begin with.
Things I look for in art/fic: That it exists?
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: …I dunno.
My happily ever after for them: They’re happy together whether their respective families approve of their relationship or not. (Which at least Claude does.)
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Mostly harmlessly horsing around with regular humans, and each other too.
Eric Creighton/Sid Griffin/Nadia/Danya [OC/Gravedale High/OC/OC]
When or if I started shipping it: I think we started shipping Sid and Eric pretty shortly after we started working on him, and I kinda started shipping Nadia with Sid pretty quickly too. I pretty much immediately jumped to shipping Nadia and Danya.
My thoughts: I love them and look forward to hopefully doing more for them at some point? Sid was kinda not treated very well by the other students in his class, even towards the end of the show, and he’s the only one who never had a close friend like everyone else in class did, so I like how this kinda changes that.
What makes me happy about them: It’s been fun developing OCs for a show that doesn’t really get that much love outside the internet that happen to fall for a character I adore like a son? I think this finally helped me let go of the idea that OCs who end up with canon characters are inherently cringy and/or badly-written that I was pressured into believing as a younger teenager.
What makes me sad about them: That this show never even got a DVD release, what the fuck, Universal, give me my teenage monster children
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: Not about this ship exactly, but have I mentioned how disheartening it is to find that the few GH fanfics I’ve found mostly focus on Vinnie and Reggie as if they’re the only characters from this show worth focusing on? (They’re great, but the others deserve attention too.)
Things I look for in art/fic: I haven’t even drawn Danya yet, and I somehow lost the one rough sketch I’ve done for Nadia, so…
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: (shrugs)
My happily ever after for them: All four of them live together with their future daughter Grisephone.
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Musical comedy nights. I mean, any time they’re together they have fun, but especially musical comedy nights, because who knows what’ll happen.
Dr. Henry Davenport/Edgar Raven [Monster in my Pocket]
When or if I started shipping it: Er… late July of last year, apparently?
My thoughts: They would absolutely be dorks together.
What makes me happy about them: Thinking of them being Carrie’s dorky dads together is endearing to me.
What makes me sad about them: I can pretty much guarantee that Edgar isn’t even in the other unaired episodes that are who knows where now so I don’t think we’ll ever know what he looks like.
Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I’m pretty sure that Edgar’s not even in the very few fics for this show that do exist.
Things I look for in art/fic: I’d honestly be impressed if any art of Edgar exists, fanart or otherwise.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My happily ever after for them: Edgar and Davenport get married and the latter officially adopts Carrie to become her official Monster Dad (the other three good monsters being her honorary monster uncles).
Their favorite non-sexual activity: Reading and writing together with one helping come up with ideas for the other.
Thank you so much! I’m sorry this is so long, I have a lot of feelings for invisible characters.
(Send me a ship?)
For the week of 7 January 2019
Quick Bits:
Aliens: Dust to Dust #4 concludes this series from Gabriel Hardman, Rain Beredo, and Michael Heisler. It’s been very good, capturing the feel and atmosphere of the first two Alien films and delivering a very taut horror-thriller. Absolutely gorgeous artwork from Hardman and Beredo.
| Published by Dark Horse
Atomic Robo: Dawn of a New Era #1 isn’t a bad jumping on point. It doesn’t really get you up to speed on the past of the series, but you also don’t really need to have read any of it to enjoy this story. Great humour and interesting tidbits of science and history as usual from Brian Clevinger, Scott Wegener, Shannon Murphy, and Jeff Powell.
| Published by IDW
Avengers #12 works to build up Black Panther’s “Agents of Wakanda” to serve as a support network for information and grunt work throughout the world to feed the Avengers team proper. It’s an interesting use of otherwise lesser-used characters from Jason Aaron and definitely broadens the scope of the overall series.
| Published by Marvel
Barbarella/Dejah Thoris #1 is a very good beginning to this series from Leah Williams, Germán García, Addison Duke, and Crank!. Williams captures the tone and feel of both characters very well through their dialogue and the artwork from García and Duke is impressive.
| Published by Dynamite
Batman #62 is the second part of “Knightmares”, which near as I can tell is going to be a series of one-off stories by an array of brilliant artists with Batman as filtered through some strange psycho-thriller lens (or at least the first two parts adhere to that ethos). It’s good, but it’s weird. Great art from Mitch Gerads as Tom King keeps us off balance and at arms length with the narrative confusion.
| Published by DC Comics
Birthright #35 concludes this arc with an epic battle between Brennan and Mikey, as Brennan confronts his family, cutting deep into the resentment that Brennan has felt for his brother. The art from Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas is amazing.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Bitter Root #3 continues to be thoroughly excellent in every conceivable way, presenting a compelling mystery in the origins of the Jinoo, an interesting family drama delving into more of the history and interpersonal foibles of the Sangerye family, and it’s just an entertaining supernatural schlockfest on top of all of that. David F. Walker, Chuck Brown, Sanford Greene, Rico Renzi, and Clayton Cowles are delivering one hell of a story here. Oh, and the art from Greene and Renzi is stunning.
| Published by Image
The Black Order #3 shifts to the perspective of Black Dwarf here, and like the first issue, plays off a narrative that is contrary to what you’d expect. Where Glaive thought himself a comedian, Black Dwarf is more contemplative, wondering if his thoughts and desires are who he is, or if he’s merely the brute that others see. It’s interesting, even as it continues the ongoing plot of trying to destroy the Sinnarian Empire.
| Published by Marvel
By Night #7 takes an interesting turn as Heather’s father and uncle take a moment to act as exterminators and she and Jane try to rescue Barney from a mob boss. Love the humour as always from John Allison’s script, especially as he adds some unexpected elements. Very nice design and presentation of the bug from Eidolon by Christine Larsen and Sarah Stern.
| Published Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Captain Marvel #1 is a fun relaunch, perfectly mixing humour, action, and interpersonal drama as Kelly Thompson, Carmen Carnero, Tamra Bonvillain, and Clayton Cowles bring Carol back to New York. Beautiful colours throughout from Bonvillain, really making Carnero’s line art shine.
| Published by Marvel
Criminal #1 is a very welcome return to the Lawless family, as Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Jacob Phillips weave a tale of Ricky stealing an old thief’s necklace trying to bail Teeg out of jail, only to wind up in even more hot water than he began in. You don’t need to have read any of the previous volumes of Criminal before, but I still highly recommend that you do since they’re awesome.
| Published by Image
The Curse of Brimstone #10 gives us some more answers as Annie confronts Wandering Jack to get information on the Salesman and to figure out a way to possibly save her brother. This is still a weird series, but Justin Jordan, Eduardo Pansica, Júlio Ferreira, Rain Beredo, and Wes Abbott have definitely been making it interesting.
| Published by DC Comics
Deathstroke #39 gears us up for the conclusion next issue by positing that from Slade’s point of view what he’s claimed happened actually did happen, as the disparate threads converge. It’s interesting as to how Priest has been staging this story.
| Published by DC Comics
Die #2 is brilliant. As good as the first issue was, and it was really damn good, this one is even better as we get the exposed to some of the rules of this fantasy world and thrown headlong into the seamless world building of this realm. Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles have something truly magical here, taking a childhood love of science fiction and fantasy, and subverting it into something that can hurt us like weaponized nostalgia. It is absolutely stunning.
| Published by Image
Faith: Dreamside #4 is a very strong conclusion to this mini from Jody Houser, MJ Kim, Jordie Bellaire, and Dave Sharpe. The entire series has looked good, but Kim and Bellaire really take it to another level with this finale, the confrontation of Belu is just incredible.
| Published by Valiant
The Freeze #2 is probably better than the first issue and it was an incredibly debut, from Dan Wickline, Phillip Sevy, and Troy Peteri. I absolutely love that the focus isn’t on the freeze itself or what caused it, and is instead about the people living in the world and the problems that this kind of apocalypse could cause. It’s smart and leads to some very compelling character drama and complications.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 is amazing. Spectacular even. This is a very heartfelt and humorous debut from Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham that takes Spider-Man down to the local level, spotlighting his, well, neighbourhood. There’s also a back-up from Taylor, Marcelo Ferreira, Roberto Poggi, Jim Campbell, and Lanham that could well be a game-changer.
| Published by Marvel
The Green Lantern #3 continues to be one hell of trip from Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, Steve Oliff, and Tom Orzechowski. It still feels like something out of a different time, but that’s part of what really makes this work.
| Published by DC Comics
Gunning for Hits #1 is a pretty dense beginning to what’s apparently a crime drama mixed with the music industry, not at all like Empire because I know that’s probably what many would think. It’s seedier, grittier, down at the street level, but as I say, this is dense. This first issue has a lot of narration, a lot of dialogue, and a great number of pages that more or less outline how signing deals work in a how-to format. It’s unique, blending some of the hallmarks of something like an autobio comic with a more standard narrative approach. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what Jeff Rougvie, Moritat, and Casey Silver do for a second number.
| Published by Image
Hit-Girl #12 is the bloody conclusion to Rafael Scavone, Rafael Albuquerque, Marcel Maiolo, and Clem Robins’ “Rome” arc with Mindy and Paola confronting the corrupt convent. Absolutely beautiful artwork from Albuquerque and Maiolo, with even time for one last twist in the tale.
| Published by Image
House Amok #4 features some very impressive artwork from Shawn McManus and Lee Loughridge as the story takes and interesting path as it heads towards the conclusion. Christopher Sebela has been giving us an interesting look at this world through Dylan as the scales fell from her eyes, but this one makes us wonder, what if the family isn’t really crazy.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown
Justice League #15 heats things up on Hawkworld with a very interesting revelation about Shayera and Thanagar Prime, along with a deeper mystery about the multiverse. It really makes me wonder what James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder are getting at. Gorgeous art throughout from Jim Cheung, Stephen Segovia, Mark Morales, Tomeu Morey, and Wil Quintana.
| Published by DC Comics
The Last Siege #8 is the brutal conclusion to this series that has been a practical masterclass in storytelling, from character development through pacing, atmosphere and execution. This series has just been incredible. Landry Q. Walker, Justin Greenwood, Brad Simpson, and Patrick Brosseau stick the landing with one hell of a finale.
| Published by Image
Man Without Fear #2 continues to tear Matt Murdock apart as he finds ways not to deal very well with being hit by a truck. And gives in to fear. Great art from Stefano Landini and Andres Mossa as Matt’s nightmares come to life.
| Published by Marvel
Martian Manhunter #2 continues to be a bit of a slow burn, parcelling out a bit about the in-story present and then delving into more about J’onn’s past on Mars, building up Martian culture and what they were taking from Earth even in our ancient past. The art from Riley Rossmo and Ivan Plascencia is amazing.
| Published by DC Comics
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #2 is another great issue as Miles and the Rhino team-up to track down the missing kids. Saladin Ahmed does an amazing job of humanizing Rhino and making us empathize with his plight. The art from Javier Garrón and David Curiel is again very impressive.
| Published by Marvel
Moth & Whisper #5 concludes this series from Ted Anderson, Jen Hickman, and Marshall Dillon. While it does bring the story to a satisfying resolution, it still leaves open the door for more to come, which I’d love to see.
| Published by AfterShock
Murder Falcon #4 delivers some pretty big revelations as the reunited Brooticus faces off against Magnum Khaos. It goes about as well as you’d expect. Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton are really nailing the heartfelt character beats in amongst the over-the-top monster battles.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Oblivion Song #11 deals with the fallout of Ed’s transference of another piece of Philly over to Oblivion. Gorgeous artwork as always from Lorenzo De Felici and Annalisa Leoni, particularly during the creature battles.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Outer Darkness #3 continues to show us how this universe works as the crew try to salvage a derelict vessel on a supposedly barren rock. This mix of horror and science fiction is wonderful and John Layman, Afu Chan, and Pat Brosseau are really creating something unique here.
| Published by Image / Skybound
The Punisher #6 begins the next leg of Frank’s ongoing nightmares with the first part of “War in Bagalia” from Matthew Rosenberg, Szymon Kudranski, Antonio Fabela, and Cory Petit. I’ve really been enjoying what Rosenberg has been doing since the “War Machine” arc and it just seems to be getting better. There’s some really intriguing things about a nation run by Baron Zemo here.
| Published by Marvel
Red Sonja #25 ends this volume with another one-off tale with Red Sonja ferrying a musician to a ship on the coast from Amy Chu, Erik Burnham, Carlos Gomez, Mohan, and Taylor Esposito. It’s a curious story of longing for home that allows for a little bit of reflection on the series, but it doesn’t ruminate on it long.
| Published by Dynamite
Self/Made #2 doesn’t have the luxury of the twist of the first issue, so has to work harder to get past that “I see dead people” Sixth Sense moment, and, really, it does. This is just a damned good story, playing with sci-fi and fantasy elements, blended seamlessly due to it all being a representation of game development. Mat Groom, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, and Troy Peteri are doing some great work here.
| Published by Image
Sleepless #11 brings all of the plots and machinations to an end as Sarah Vaughn, Leila Del Duca, Alissa Sallah, Gabe Fischer, and Deron Bennett bring the series to an end. Some very interesting bits of tradition, change, and resentment towards monarchy.
| Published by Image
Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider #4 is an epilogue to the “Spider-Geddon” event, paying tribute and burying the fallen. It’s a very haunting story, making you wonder if Gwen’s going to take a darker turn in the future. Seanan McGuire, Rosi Kämpe, Takeshi Miyazawa, Ian Herring, and Clayton Cowles do a wonderful saying goodbye to various parts of the Spider-Verse.
| Published by Marvel
Star Wars: Age of Republic - Jango Fett #1 is this week’s one-shot exploring various characters around the Star Wars canon. Jody Houser, Luke Ross, Java Tartaglia, and Travis Lanham give us a decent story of betrayal and consequences with Jango and Boba Fett.
| Published by Marvel
Star Wars Adventures: Destroyer Down #3 concludes this mini from Scott Beatty, Derek Charm, Jon Sommariva, Sean Parsons, Matt Herms, and Tom B. Long. It’s been interesting to see the two time periods of the stories play against one other with events in the past informing those in the present.
| Published by IDW
Thor #9 is somewhat of a companion piece to this week’s Avengers #12, setting up Roz Solomon as another Agent of Wakanda, but you don’t need to read both of them to enjoy them individually. This one delivers a lot of information on what’s going on in regards to the build up of the “War of the Realms” in addition to giving Roz a new purpose and changed outlook. Gorgeous artwork from Mike del Mundo.
| Published by Marvel
Turok #1 is an entertaining reimagining of the series from Ron Marz, Roberto Castro, Salvatore Aiala, and Troy Peteri, somewhat in line with the original Valiant interpretation, albeit moving it forward to the late 1800′s. Quite like the art from Castro and Aiala. Castro’s art reminds me a bit of a cross between Joe Kubert, Bart Sears, and Jordi Bernet.
| Published by Dynamite
United States vs. Murder Inc. #5 paints a very bleak picture for the next stage in the US government’s war against the crime families following the assassination of the President. Wonderful work on tone and atmosphere from Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Avon Oeming, Taki Soma, and Carlos M. Mangual.
| Published by DC Comics / Jinxworld
Web of Venom: Venom Unleashed #1 is a pair of tales spotlighting the new dog-form of the symbiote as he chases down people infected by Carnage, then Cletus’ perspective on it, from Ryan Stegman, Kyle Hotz, Juan Gedeon, Marc Deering, Scott Hanna, Livesay, Roberto Poggi, Victor Olazaba, Dan Brown, Matt Yackey, Andrew Crossley, Carlos Cabrera, and Clayton Cowles. Really nice to see Hotz’s art here.
| Published by Marvel
William Gibson’s Alien 3 #3 has the crap hit the proverbial fan as meddling with the xenomorphs begins to bear its deadly fruit. Johnnie Christmas, Tamra Bonvillain, and Nate Piekos are doing such an amazing job at adapting this for comics, it makes me kind of sad that it wasn’t the direction the films took.
| Published by Dark Horse
Wizard Beach #2 continues the fun of the first issue, with Hex trying to get off the beach, build himself a castle, and hunt down tasty, delicious rats for lunch to no avail. Nice bits of humour and the introduction of a girl who Hex might well be smitten with, as well as a darker mystery involving her grandfather’s wand. Great art from Conor Nolan, Chad Lewis, and Meg Casey.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
The Wrong Earth #5 has both of the dimension-displaced Dragonflies(flymen) continue to attempt to get back to their respective homes. Also, through flashbacks and monologues, I kind of get the impression that Tom Peyer is trying to tell us that both of them are thoroughly insane. There’s also the usual back-up comic and prose text pieces to round out the issue.
| Published by Ahoy
Young Justice #1 is the launch vehicle of the new Brian Michael Bendis-driven Wonder Comics line. If you look at it from a perspective of DC’s continuity, it’s probably very confusing. Many of the characters seem to be in their pre-New 52, even potentially pre-Infinite Crisis forms, Gemworld is attacking, Amethyst seems particularly bloodthirsty, and we’ve got a couple of inexplicable legacy characters in Jinny Hex and Teen Lantern, but...I think that confusion, that chaos and frenetic energy, is part of the point, since at the onset, the invaders from Gemworld are aware of the shifts in the multiverse. So maybe give it a chance to develop from there are clue us in on what’s ultimately going on? Regardless, there’s gorgeous action, interesting layouts, and fascinating design work from Patrick Gleason and Alejandro Sanchez.
“What’s cookin’ good lookin’?” dealer's choice but make it platonic
God, this is more about the tone of the prompt than anything else, because I fixated on that “platonic” specification and kind of went from there. So here’s some Old Soldiers shit with aroace Ana and trans Gabe and kind of an asshole Jack.
Torbjörn’s the one who starts it, because Torbjörn always has to stick his nose in her business. Ana’s coming from a meeting in downtown Zurich, and texts Jack to let him know she’ll be late for their morning briefing. He texts her back with a thumbs up emoji, a coffee emoji, and a question mark. She sighs and asks the driver if they can make a stop along the way.
“Typical,” Torbjörn grumbles when she rushes in, handing Jack his skim macchiato as she takes her seat. “You only bothered to ask your work husband if he wanted any.”
She and Jack both freeze. The other people at the table may as well, but she doesn’t think she’s really processing any new sensory input. The next thing she registers is Jack nearly collapsing on himself laughing.
“Holy shit,” he says, as he’s catching his breath. “Torb’s right. You’re my work wife.”
She scowls and shoots Torbjörn a poisonous look. He looks appropriately remorseful, but the damage is done. “He was the only one who asked me for coffee,” she says. “And he is not my work husband.”
“You two kind of are work-married,” Reinhardt says. She glares at him as well but he’s practiced at playing oblivious and just beams back at her. “You two work together all the time, you’re such good friends, you know each other so well– did you even need to ask for his coffee order?”
“You’ve made your point,” Ana snaps.
“Hey. Reinhardt.” Jack seems to have found some kind of composure, and is pointing accusatorily across the table. “Stop arguing with my work wife.”
“My apologies,” Reinhardt says, and half-bows with a flourish. Next to him, Dr. Ziegler looks borderline nauseous, which Ana is immensely appreciative of.
“Can we get back to work?” she asks.
“Please,” Ana says. She turns on her holovid and syncs it to the smarttable they’re working on. “Our climatology division has been saying they feel a bit abandoned,” she says, looking over the notes so far. “Can we trying to increase outreach to them?”
“Yeah,” Jack says, flipping through his contacts. “I think we’re just waiting for the winter storms in Antarctica to die down. I’ll forward you all the status updates I get from that team.”
“Okay, good. Thanks.”
“Anything for you, dear.” She glares at him and when he looks completely unabashed, she groans. This is going to be a thing.
-
“So,” Gabriel says. “Congrats on your work marriage.”
Ana rolls her eyes, even though Gabriel’s putting the kettle back on the stove and has his back to her. He’ll know. Just like she knows he’s going to be wearing a shit-eating grin when he turns around.
“I missed my work wedding invitation,” he says as he sits back down at the break room table, grin in question firmly in place. “Or was it a work elopement?” For once, Ana’s grateful that she has to wake up this early. The break room is empty at this hour, so Gabriel doesn’t have an audience for the grand time he’s having with this. Not that it would have mattered. Jack spent all of yesterday playing up their apparent work-marriage, and evidently it’s already made its way to Blackwatch.
“Are you finished?” she asks, stirring her tea absently. He laughs and lifts up his cup of coffee.
“Work l’chaim,” he says, and she rolls her eyes again but clinks her mug. He takes a drink and stares at the wall contemplatively.
“It makes sense, since we’re in different divisions and all,” Gabriel says. “But I can’t help but feel left out. You’d be a grand work wife.”
“And I’d hate to miss out on a work prize like you,” Ana says drily.
“Can I be your work–” Gabriel pauses and frowns. “You know, now that I think about it, it’s pretty sexist that we don’t have an equivalent ‘mistress’ term for other genders.”
“Indeed.”
“‘Mister’ just doesn’t convey the same level of scandal.”
“Truly one of the great injustices of our age.”
“Anyway, can I be your work male-mistress?” He shakes his head. “That sounds like I’m delivering your mail or something, there’s got to be a better way to phrase this–”
“We’re friends,” Ana snaps. “You’re my best friend. We don’t need some stupid sitcom terminology for that.”
Gabriel stops and looks at her carefully. “Is this bothering you?” he asks. “I mean, the work-spouse thing as a whole?”
She sighs. “I don’t know,” she says. “I mean, they’re not wrong. We work together constantly and we’ve been friends forever. And it’s not like they’re even doing some passive aggressive gossipy thing, like what happens most of the time when people start calling out work spouses. Everyone knows Jack’s gay.” Gabriel raises his eyebrows a little and leans back in his chair. Ana narrows her eyes. “What?”
“Everyone knows Jack’s gay,” Gabriel says, in that incredibly irritating tone he takes when he has some piece of intel no one else does. “But not everyone knows you’re ace.”
Ana looks down at her cup. “Yeah? So?” He shrugs.
“I don’t know. Just thought it was significant, that you didn’t bring that up.”
Ana opens her mouth to argue with him. There are some good arguments she could bring up, too. Everyone knows she had a kid and knows about Sam. It wouldn’t make sense for them to just assume she’s ace, unlike with Jack, who has a well-documented history of lackluster attempts at dating illustrious men (and, for that matter, an organization-wide betting pool about whether or not he and Gabriel are still hooking up). She doesn’t hide it, not anymore, but she doesn’t really talk about it too much either. Not like Jack, who has a rainbow flag in the mug he keeps his pens in on his desk. It’s not that ridiculous that she wouldn’t state the obvious.
But Gabriel’s right, is the thing, and that sucks because he can get so smug when he’s right. It bothers her that she’s not afraid of gunfire or towering robots but she’s afraid to put an ace flag anywhere people could see it. It bothers her that everyone knows everything about her relationship with Sam, but Jack and Gabriel are just her friends. It bothers her that “work husband” is the only term she’s heard used that starts to capture how integral they are to her life.
She hasn’t said anything in awhile and Gabriel looks worried. She doesn’t give him enough credit. He wouldn’t gloat over something like this. She trusts him, she loves him, that’s kind of the problem.
“It’s just… weird,” she says, finally. “People don’t get it. And so they try to put what they do get onto it. And it feels cheap and bad.” Gabriel nods.
“I still have older relatives who treat me like I’m crazy,” he says gently. “When I brought Jack home, one of my uncles straight-up asked me if this meant I was done with my ‘phase,’ and if he could call me by my deadname again now.”
Ana cocks her head. “That’s not really the same,” she says. “Gabriel, that’s worse than anything I’ve ever had to deal with with this shit.”
“It’s not the same,” he agrees. “But ‘worse’ or ‘better’ wasn’t really what I was going for. What I meant was, I’ve had to deal with people not getting who you are, and not really wanting to try to.” He reaches his hand over the table, and she sets her mug down and takes it. “And I know Jack doesn’t like to talk about it, because he thinks he’s gotten lucky, and he probably has. But he’s had to deal with shit like this too. It’s not outside our realm of understanding. And the stuff that is, we’ll try to get there, because you do that for us.”
Ana nods slowly. Her eyes feel hot. “Yeah,” she whispers. “Thanks.” Gabriel slides his chair closer to her, sending a metallic shriek through the break room, and hugs her. She buries her head in his shoulder.
“What are work-male-mistresses for?” he says. She jabs him in the side and he laughs.
-
When she’s done with her tea and Gabriel’s done with his coffee, she makes a new cup in Gabriel’s french press. She carries it carefully through the base, and use her foot to knock on Jack’s door.
“Come in,” he yells.
“Get the door for me, please?” she yells back. She only has to wait a moment before Jack’s pulling it open for her.
“Aw, thanks,” he says, taking the mug from her. “You’re the best work wife ever.”
Ana winces as she steps into his office. “Hey, so. I actually wanted to talk to you about that.”
Her back is to Jack, but she knows the slightly panicked expression he has on his face as he closes the door and hurries to the other side of his desk. “Is it bothering you?” he asks. “I thought– you know, it’s all in fun–”
“No, no, I know.” She sits down across from him. The mug of pens with the rainbow flag in it is right in front of her. She takes a deep breath. “It’s just– weird for me sometimes. It makes me feel like everyone assumes I’m straight. And I’m not.”
Jack steeples his fingers in front of his face and doesn’t say anything. “And I know you’re not either!” she adds hurriedly. “I’m not saying they’re not erasing that about you either, you know? Just– like–” She runs her fingers through her hair. “It bothers me, still. I know it’s stupid. But it does.”
“It’s not stupid,” Jack says quietly. He drops his hands. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I’m still sorry,” he says. “I’ll drop it, and ask other people to drop it too.” Ana nods and her anxious, stiff posture eases up a little. Jack takes a pen out of the mug and spins it on the desk aimlessly. “If it helps, given the state of my love life, people don’t really have much cause to assume I’m gay, either.”
He says it in a joking tone, but it’s a feeble one. Ana frowns and tries to remember Jack’s last few dates. There had been the violinist, that had been a year ago, maybe four dates before Jack told her they were both too busy. The ambassador that Jack saw twice and decided that he was too politically risky. Then before that, Gabriel? Is that really it?
Jack’s staring at the pen. She knows that it’s difficult for him, how people see him as a bureaucrat-politician when he still sees himself as a soldier. She struggles with it too, but without quite as many eyes. A lot of the time, she’s just frustrated with his inability to deal with that dissonance– she found away, can’t he? She didn’t think it had gone this deep. But she’d also always thought that Jack would have had a real spouse by now.
“I know you’re lonely,” she says softly. She reaches out her hand and after a moment, he drops the pen and takes it. “And I really want you to find someone. But I’m here. Always will be. Don’t forget that, okay?”
He blinks a little, then nods and smiles. “Okay,” he says. “As long as you don’t, either.”
“Okay,” Ana says. He clears his throat.
“So. I uh, totally get work husband being out, but is there another term you’d want to…?”
Oh God. Jack is looking to her for guidance here and she knows about as much about terminology for this as she does terminology for the gender spectrum of mistresses. Her alarm must be visible though, because Jack just laughs.
“It’s okay,” he says. “It wouldn’t make anything different. Just wanted to know.”
Ana nods, relieved. “I’ll let you and Gabriel know if I come up with anything.”
“So will I,” Jack says. He thinks for a moment. “Partner?” he suggests.
Ana pulls a face. “Maybe. I don’t know. It still feels too romantic, and ‘platonic life partner’ sounds like I’m taking you to court.”
“Hopefully you don’t.” He takes a sip of coffee. “Consort? Comrade?”
“Jack.”
“Life coworker?” She takes a pen from the mug and throws it at his head.
