AU is inspired by Renata Litvinova, a director and actress, and Zemfira, a rock singer. I am a fan of their creativity and my brain could not help but generate such an alter reality!

• Pippa is the Supreme Witch (I don't like the version with the Great Sorceress, it's the lot of men to call themselves something great as such without being).

• Hecate is an ethno-rock singer whose creativity is directed at the culture of ancient traditional witches and their rituals. Despite her 20-year career, no one knows anything more than her name.

• There was no Azura and imprisonment in this universe, Gwen was Hecate's mentor, and Pippa pushed her to write songs.

• Pippa goes to all of Hecate's concerts and the witch community shouts about their strong friendship at all. However, the media are confident in their affair, creating the only black spot in the reputation of the politician with rumors.

• Officially, Pippa is married to Joy Hardbroom, the head of the Hardbroom clan, the most influential family on the list of ten. Joy appears only in a couple with his wife and leads a closed lifestyle.

• Pippa has been the Supreme Witch for the last 5 years and conducts programs to support witches from human families and raise the level of magic.

• Gwen and Hecate's team are the only people who know about their marriage.

• Almost every song of Hecate is dedicated to Pippa, which gives rise to these rumors about the novel. Joy is not going to comment on anything.

• Hecate's repertoire and her voice are something in between Zemfira and Sounduk. Listen for the sake of interest to "Прогул��а", "Крым", "Жить в твоей голове" (Zemfira) and "Лето", "Герой", "Считалка", "ВММ" (Sounduk)

• Pippa is tired of dealing with the press.

• Therefore, Hecate avoids society.

• Pippa likes to be photographed.

• Hecate can't stand it. But for Pippa's sake he will suffer.

• Hecate has a lot of tattoos, but there is a bright pink pentagram and a bottle with Latin hieroglyphs.

• Pippa collects Hecate's outfits for concerts. On the exits with Pippa, Joy chooses her own clothes. Most often it looks like a widow murdered in the Middle Ages.

• Pippa puts up Hecate's home photos and marks different accounts (separately Hecate and separately Joy) under different photos so that people just know that she is still alive.

• Pippa's accounts are kept by publicists, but the texts of the posts are written by Pippa herself.

• Hecate doesn't know how to run social networks. But she actively monitors the accounts of a few friends and is rude to his haters.

This is SO long and rambled because it’s for me and putting my thoughts down on my blog! But feel free to peruse bc I am just crying sobbing putting words down. Thoughts under the cut for spoilers <3

-starting off strong with Angel Coulby you are the most beautiful woman and the most perfect Guinevere possible

-something interesting is how much more the lack of communication drove me bonkers this time around, like please just explain everything in detail to each other we could solve so many problems

-Merlin also seems like so much more of an ill-moraled character this go around? Like he is truly so morally grey and his logic for “should I do this” is deeply just “does it in any potential way benefit Arthur/the fuckass prophecy”

-TO THE POINT THAT he’s literally like Magic’s #1 Hater for five straight seasons AND can’t see that he is actively making the prophecy unfold every single time

-Gwen/Morgana gfs my angels I’m so sorry this happened to you

-Morgana should have had a friend so badly like one friend (not Morgause) would have saved her

-same exact sentiment for Mordred

-Merlin/Arthur and Merlin/Gwaine literally no comments

-actually this show invented polyamory and throuples would have saved many of you

-ON THE TOPIC Lancelot so badly is both Arthur and Merlin’s queer awakening in my heart. I do think Merlin likely already knew (Will) but I think his relationship to Lancelot made queer relationships seem feasible in some form

-I do not think Arthur knew at all and that’s why he looks so damn confused every time he interacts with Lancelot

-Lancelot is around for SO much less than I ever remember too he really is just stepping in to be pretty and complicate the narrative and then leave again

-Arthur needs glasses so severely I fear because I can excuse a lot of the missing magic moments but I watched Merlin lock eyes with him and use magic during that S5 dice game you can’t explain that one away

-Gwaine my beloved! Proof that a fictional man can be both a butch lesbian to the women in his life and a pansexual man to everyone else

-Morgana and Morgause…. This script is fruity as hell can we be for real. Both actresses said “yeah we played it a little queer” I fear the BBC was not brave enough to give Morgana an evil fucked up gf and went the Kill la Kill route

-I think by Elyan’s death all the knights fully must know that the ambiguous secret Merlin seems to have is in fact his magic and they are just choosing not to say anything out of respect for him (“he’s tell us when he’s ready”)

-EXCEPT: Leon doesn’t know. I do however think Leon just thinks Merlin is gay.

-Gwaine absolutely knows there’s literally no way around that one

-Gwen I feel also had an inkling that Merlin had magic, which I feel is supported by her and Gaius’ conversation in S5E13, I do also think she thinks he’s gay

-I also do think Merlin is gay

-I forgot how much of a through-line the joke that Merlin crossdresses is, it comes up at least three times

-tangentially related, the early friendship between Morgana and Merlin… I mourn u every day! The friends they could’ve been and how happy he was when he thought she knew he had magic (S1? When she thinks he has a crush on Gwen)

-also I forgot how much angst Merlin had about magic towards Gaius, several (justified) comments about how Gaius doesn’t understand what he’s going through

-also so so interesting is that I feel like in so many Magic Revealed fics, we write Arthur responding with shock & confusion & anger (which all rock big fan), but in the finale, once he understands that Merlin is so for serious a sorcerer, he’s just so scared of him?? Which was crazy I don’t think that has sunk in before how scared he looks

-and then they start to get over it and we get the reminiscing about their fight from the first day they met where Merlin confesses to using magic and we get the devastating exchange “you cheated” “you looked like you were going to kill me!” “I should have”

-damn major nostalgia vibe killer from Arthur, DEVASTATING on this rewatch

-also S5E12 when Gwaine and Merlin and traveling through the valley of the fallen kings and get jumped by bandits and Merlin gets cornered and HOLLERS for Gwaine thank you BBC that one lives rent free in my head always

-fuck this dragon for real also because Merlin DOES kind of fail like none of the shit they planned for happened, they got pieces but so much more COULDVE worked out without this fuckass dragon whispering in Merlin’s ear every day Kilgharrah it’s on sight dude

-finally maybe the most sickening parallel I have to offer is S4E13 when Isolde is dying and she and Tristan are reminiscing on the plans they had that are obviously not going to happen anymore and she says “hold me”

-which obviously is striking a significant chord with Arthur as it spurs him to reconcile with Gwen (thank god everyone cheered)

-(also why was the full breadth of her enchantment never discussed back to miscommunication please she didn’t cheat on him like that justice for Gwen’s rep I’m sick)

-BUT ALSO! A season later in S5E13 we get Merlin and a dying Arthur with Merlin trying to explain that they have so much to do so Arthur can’t die, and Arthur says “just hold me”

-I will lose it every time about this one… watching half of a couple die and mourn the chance to live a life together and then mirroring that at your own death with the man you are unexplainably close and connected to

-also the “I’m going to say something I’ve never said to you before… thank you” had such a queer set up that even my parents thought it was going to be an “I love you” when we watched the show for the first time together in like 2014 so… it’s the Spanish supernatural finale dub in my heart

-I think that’s enough I’m just sick to my STOMACH over this show once again, obviously it’s a BBC show from 2009 so it’s not without criticism but it’s genuinely my favorite TV show I’ve ever seen without competition. There is a deeply clear allegory for queerness that has drawn in and continues to draw in queer fans constantly and keep the viewership active. I also just love so badly how campy and classic it is, it’s one of the few pieces of media I have in DVD because I fear so badly to lose it. BBC Merlin I love u what a brilliant and silly and devastating tv show from 2009

TD Heather character analysis

I’ll start off by saying that little me was a hater. I did not like Heather at all I thought she was an awful person and one of the reasons why was because Gwen was my only favorite.

However now that I’m older and have had time to grow I see her a bit more clearly now and find her very relatable now and have realized that 8 yr old me was projecting very hard. The perfect way to explain that with a few worlds is the saying:

“Hurt people hurt other people”

At the time I found the show I was living at a hospital while a family member was dying and I was mean to many people for no reason because of my grief. I’ll admit I acted a lot like Heather.

Being in a household with a lot of siblings that don’t look out for each other but instead stick to the rule “every man for themselves” she has to fight and survive to get attention, approval and basic needs form her parents. From what we’ve heard from Heather about her siblings they don’t exactly seem to be a walk in the park either. When she describes her brother Damien he seems to be pretty misbehaved as well, so leads to the conclusion that it’s not just her who acts like this. It’s because of living in a dysfunctional home where all she can do to feel safety and not judged is to be in constant survival mode along with having to defend herself from her own damn family is why she’s so used to being the mean, spoiled brat we see her as throughout the show. She’s not allowed to show vulnerability in a place that she’s supposed to call home, with people who are supposed to love her unconditionally regardless of her failures, emotions & flaws. We can’t expect her to be a nice person and to be vulnerable enough to create relationships outside of the house if she’s not allowed to do it at home. We can’t expect it because not only is she not shown it but she’s not welcomed to experiment and show it herself to others in a place and with people who are suppose to be her stronghold and foundation. Children learn from example, if you don’t show them them love or care they aren’t gonna do it in return or to anyone else for that matter.

So of course when she’s placed on an island with complete strangers, she switches her survival mode on to the max. Blocking them out before any of them can get to her and damage her even more than she is.

All Heather was ever really taught in her life was “Do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. No matter the cost.” Let the cost be losing friends, public humiliation, being hated by all the people she knows, sacrificing her feelings for the guy she loves all so she can reach her goal aka the million dollars. But then she’s left with the thought of what happens next. What happens after she gets what she wants? She gets her goal and yet she still is ignored by the people that she wants approval from (her parents) .

When she was sobbing on that volcano, what did she say? She said,

“I worked so hard”.

That is a phrase, a plead, a person gives when they are so tired of making efforts that they now realize will never be acknowledged. Efforts that never mattered in the first place. That there was her plead for rest! She was so done, until she was shown that someone actually admitted and expressed and showed her what vulnerability was. They expressed their feelings of love and admiration for her that she actually stopped and thought for a moment. None the less her unhealthy habit of putting her goals first before anything kinda ruined it😑.

Even so she’s explained how she does feel guilty has resentment about her behavior. We see with Harold in season one she says “it’s become a habit for hers” and she hides how she actually feels about being disliked by others. She doesn’t want to be mean it’s just all she’s ever known. She was never taught to be in touch with her feelings or to be respectful emotionally vulnerable with herself. That’s why I found it so beautiful in All Stars when we saw her being genuinely happy with Alejandro. She seems relaxed and unbothered (til Chris ruined it😒). And I hope that’s how the rest of her relationship will be, because happy Heather is everything ♥️.

TL;DR BIO

Gwen was born as Wendell Plummer and grew up as a golden child and science prodigy, heavily pressured by her mother to succeed in everything she did.

After her extensive education, she was hired by the US government to act as a consultant on climate change and endangered species. She was disheartened to learn that her advice was rarely taken and nobody took her seriously.

Met Mateo Jimenez (Javi Jookiba), a government scientist who was using his grant money for under the table experiments. However, he greatly valued her input and the two together continued their illicit activities.

Eventually they were discovered by the government, so they made a run for it. They changed their names to Gwen Pleakley and Javi Jookiba and are acting as a married couple who just moved to town.

While having gender feelings for a very long time, it is only through her Gwen “disguise” that she’s allowed herself to live fully as a woman, and she loves it.

Renting a room from Nani Pelekai and living in the Pelekai home as quirky roommates.

While her marriage is fake, Gwen is starting to develop real feelings for Javi and has no idea what to do with it.

PERSONALITY

Neurotic, nosy, and not-at-all high maintenance, Gwen can be a lot to be around. While friendly, she also has a tendency to talk too much, brag, and generally be annoying.

Self-righteous and always believing herself to be in the right, Gwen can go full Karen mode at any given time. She is especially protective of bugs, animals, and the environment, but can also extend to frivolous matters such as holidays and diet.

Despite all this, if you give her the time of day, she will be undyingly loyal and a very good friend. The kind who brings you food when you’re sick, drives you to the airport, and supports you in whatever way you need.

She really enjoys her job as a professor and always does her best to support her students, particularly the ones that are invested in her class.

WANTED CONNECTIONS:

College professors/Students: She teaches at Redwood College and is always trying to make friends with her coworkers and help her students. She even helps Javi’s students, as he’s not as...supportive of a professor as she is.

Girl friends: Not girlfriends as in dating, but friends who are girls. Gwen is still fairly early in her transition and is desperate to connect with other women.

Gossip: Gwen is nosy af and loves gossiping about the people around town.

Farmer’s market buds: She is a vegan and frequents the farmer’s market.

Bowling buds: Gwen joined Redwood Hollow’s bowling team and although she has little skill in the sport, she is passionate and competitive. Most likely someone needs to teach her how to play.

Bug-lovers/haters: Whether you love or hate them, Gwen is passionate about bugs and wants to connect, whether to gush or to scold you.

NJ/DC Peeps: Gwen grew up in New Jersey, but went to college and spent her 20′s in Washington, DC. If your characters were in either place during those time, definitely open for connections!

WANTED PLOTS:

Holiday Rivals: Gwen prides herself on being the most spirited celebrator of holidays that she knows. She takes great care to have the best decorations for all occasions. But then...a foe?! Someone who goes even harder with their decorating? Their rivalry would shake the foundations of the town.

A Secret Revealed: One way or another, your character finds out the truth about Javi and Gwen being wanted by the government. Whatever they do with that information, whether it be blackmailing, attempting to turn them in, etc. would make for an excellent plot.

Pelekai Household Drama: Whether a mutual friend of Nani or Lilo, your character comes over to hang out but instead gets stuck dealing with Gwen as they wait for their friend to return.

Making Javi Jealous: Okay, so Gwen is fake married. But she has a real crush on Javi. She needs to hang around a man to make Javi jealous and fall for her too. Gwen will not approach your character with the intent of “cheating”, and instead just act very close. However, as time goes on, feelings become complicated and it’s a genuine messy love triangle.

Karen: You’re just trying to run your business and here comes Karen Gwen wanting to speak to the manager.

Okay, I'm reading parts of the classic Tablet of Time storyline from the Lee/Romita ASM run - jumping around bc I don't have the ficus to read it all in order - and I have a lot of scattered thoughts that I might try to put together more cohesively later, but in the meantime:

I hate it when (non-comic) readers reduce discussions about how MJ and Gwen have been adapted to 'Raimi!MJ is comics!Gwen and TASM!Gwen is comics!MJ' bc that's not quite true if you actually look at the comics, even if neither are 100% faithful adaptations and do borrow some elements from the other (I'd say TASM!Gwen draws more from 1610!MJ than 616!MJ if we must go there though) -

HOWEVER, I do think it's funny how people who really hate Raimi!MJ while stanning TASM!Gwen as the perfect girlfriend on the grounds of, 'MJ was mean to Peter for being unreliable, unlike Gwen, who loves Peter no matter what and is completely understanding all the time!!' bc I was just reading a scene where she gets angry at Peter for being unreliable with seemingly no explanation, and I'm like, I love when 616!Gwen has a temper and her annoyance is understandable imo, but this is exactly the behaviour Raimi!MJ haters crucify her for while insisting Gwen, even 616!Gwen, would never be like that bc she's perfect, unlike bitchy MJ lol

On the topic of films influencing the mainstream public's perception of the original 616 characters bc that's going to be most people's only exposure, Raimi!Otto (and Insomniac!Otto to a much lesser degree) really has a lot of people thinking that Otto being Peter's sympathetic idol, mentor, and friend out of the classic rogues gallery is an intrinsic part of the character that goes back to the 616 comics, but here we have Peter calling Curt one of the greatest men he knows and getting really excited at the idea that maybe he could get a job working for him bc he would learn so much from him - but non-comic readers think that when he's written that way, he's 'stealing' from Otto's characterization smh

I...I don't know how to feel about him. Because on one hand we have the logic hints that he is normal most of the time - based on how people treat him. But we don't see that at all.

We never get to see Miguel OR the Society just exist and I don't think we will in the next movie cause there's no time plot-wise but considering what Miguel truly believes I'm like - maybe you just need to be put on ice for a minute. Look at yourself, you look insane.

I'm HOPING GOD IM HOPING that theres a scene where Miguel gets to Miles and just stops and is holding Miles down and now that Miles can't leave he just begs Miles not to make the same mistake he did, because he believes the even if Miles saves his dad - his dad will die anyway when the universe collapses (like Gabbie did).

I always saw the scene as this:

Peter B. KNOWS Miles isn't gonna take off while holding MayDay. He's not, Miles not going to kidnap a baby.

So Peter is continually pestering Miles to hold MayDay, to get him to stay in while place, while he intentionally alerts them of his location. However, Miles won't take MayDay, and Peter's watch goes off.

Because Miles isn't holding her, his hands are free, and he can escape.

SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME SPOILERS

Here’s some of my thoughts about the movie:

First of all, I LOVED IT!!! If you’re scared of watching it because you’re not sure if it’ll do justice, just know that IT WAS AMAZING!!!

Ok now definitely spoilers.

Honestly this might’ve been all in my head, but I kinda felt like Andrew’s Peter was treated like the lesser Spiderman? Maybe that was just him being unsure of himself and still recovering from Gwen. He was still super cool though.

I feel like Tom’s Peter REALLY needed this movie. A lot of the criticism about Tom’s Peter is that he was best friends with a billionaire, so he got an easy start. In this movie, he loses his aunt, he’s mentored by himselves that have been through the same thing as him, he battled classic Spiderman villains that end up helping the other two Spidermen learn, but the thing that I feel shows his growth the MOST is at the end of the movie when you can see a sewing machine that shows that Peter made his own suit from hand. That was something a lot of people said made a Spiderman, and now Tom’s Peter has done it. He’s living on his own and he has no one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE to be with him through it. So, Tom Peter haters, what do you have to say now?

I wonder how in the future Tobey’s and Andrew’s worlds have gotten. Both Peters have shown growth, but since Tom mentioned that technology there is more improved, I wouldn’t think that they would be past 2020.

This could also be because Stark wasn’t a thing in the other universes, which leads me to my next point.

Stark Industries and the Avengers don’t exist in the other Spidermen’s universes, and Oscorp doesn’t exist in Tom’s universe.

Which begs the question that we’ve never asked because we thought it was unnecessary: how did Tom Peter get his spider powers? Was it like Miles Morales in the spiderverse movie? A spider from another dimension? First of all, I sure HOPE not. I’d hope it’s something more creative. If Oscorp doesn’t exist, WHERE WOULD THE SPIDER COME FROM??? I don’t think Stark Industries delves into biotechnology, though idk.

Another thing, Uncle Ben is never really mentioned, so we just assumed he died and gave Peter the message like all the other spidermen. But that was Aunt May, in the third movie no less which is very interesting. So that begs another question, did Uncle Ben die or did he and Aunt May just get divorced? Or did Aunt May ever get married at all? (There might be signs to this in the first movie idk I can’t remember rn)

I wish Doc Ock got more character participation. He does a little, but not as much as I wished from his character.

Also, HOW. DARE. YOU. SPIDERMAN MOVIE. FOR MAKING ME SYMPATHIZE FOR NORMAN OSBORN. NORMAN OSBORN OF ALL PEOPLE.

I guess out of all the versions of Norman Osborn, Tobey Maguire Norman Osborn probably had the best intentions and best heart. HOWEVER, most versions of Norman Osborn are really cruel men. He’s a businessman after all. And I dislike him very very much. Even without the serum, Norman was never a good father and did sketchy things all the time.

I didn’t like how Norman didn’t say anything at the end of the movie when he was cured. We don’t know what exactly is going on in his head and it’s kinda just like??? You ok bud???

Poor Tobey Peter too, just, yknow, casually stabbed. Going back home casually stabbed.

Also Tom Peter didn’t tell the other Peters that people in their universe were gonna forget about them too? Like what about MJ in the other universe?

THE MOVIE WAS SO GREAT, BUT OFC IT LEFT ME WANTING MORE. I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE OTHER TWO GET BACK HOME. DO MJ AND TOBEY PETER FINALLY GET MARRIED?? DOES ANDREW’S TOM GET THE BOYFRIEND HE DESERVES??? WHAT ABOUT TASM HARRY???

Also I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the scene where Ned was like, “I won’t betray you and try to kill you,” and what made it funnier was Tobey and Andrew just like, “MAN LEMME GIVE YOU A FOST BUMP, A HANDSHAKE, A HUG, SOMETHING, CAUSE YOU THE BOMB MAN.”

My favorite scene was Andrew saving MJ though. BEST SCENE HANDS DOWN. I don’t feel like I even have to explain in words how many strong emotions this gives off. It was PERFECT AND WELL DESERVED.

I was smiling like a goof the whole movie I loved it so much.

I can’t even use the nostalgia thing for my explanation. I’ve only been loving spiderman since like 2019, and I didn’t watch the live action movies until 2020.

I still loved it so much. It was the best birthday present I could’ve asked for.

I think my favorite character was Andrew’s Peter. Idk, I never really had a favorite spiderman out of the three, but in this movie, Andrew’s really stuck out to me.

What are your thoughts on B future SM specifically twitter neither him or G posted anything on twitter about the wedding it kinda surprised me only because they both posted about the engagement. However twitter is a evil area sometimes for as many nice things people say there are twice as many aholes so I wonder if that was the reason. IG does have some that can’t be nice but more then not I think IG followers are more supportive. Blake has a love hate relationship with SM an I bet he would love to fill his IG with pics of G and the wedding just like G does but I feel like he just doesn’t want to give haters a platform. I can’t wait to see if they both or just G change their pic on the profiles I don’t doubt G will but you never know with B. Unfortunately I don’t think B will ever post about the boys publicly that should be a part of his life he can share if he wants as a step dad but with GR being such a DB it will make B uncomfortable for years. We will have to hope G will share a little more and say FU to GR her and Blake are now married and they are all an official family.

Ok. For me, as far as the lack of social media postings from Blake, I think the days leading up to the wedding and the week after he has been unplugged from social media, he says that he often unloads Twitter and doesn’t post for awhile and let’s his team post, I think this is one of those times. He may have done it because of the haters but they have been dealing with haters throughout their whole relationship, he knows they’re out there, if he didn’t want to ever post because of haters she never would receive any birthday greetings from him via social media and he wouldn’t have announced their engagement on there. I think he just has really been soaking in this time, knowing that they are already getting loads of attention so he will sit back and wait for it to die down a bit. For years Blake has had a picture of Gwen as his profile picture, I wouldn’t be surprised if he changes it to one from the wedding. I also think that soon Blake will (when he posts, which is hardly ever now) will be fine saying something about the boys

“Forcing diversity” isn’t always a bad thing.

I recently watched a playthrough of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

I was a bit worried about this game, because I knew that it would be plagued by people alternately parading about and whining about “Black Spider-Man”.

I’ve known for a while that the world has made me cynical and egocentric.

I don’t like immediately wrinkling my nose immediately because a non-white character appears in a major role. Yes, there are a lot of properties out there that are just shallow populist wash, companies have always done that for as long as there’s been a business to do it in.

But it had been long enough since I watched a playthrough of the original game that I’d quite forgotten it already had a huge ethnic diversity, as it takes place in vaguely-realistic New York and uses popular and obscure Spider-Man characters who were already quite diverse decades ago, yet it never felt to me like it was showing any of its ethnicities off (other than how absolutely goofy Mr. Negative and his evil Chinese demon gang were.)

And, of course, Miles was already in it (though he does not get his powers until the ending.) His stealth sections were a bit jarring but he was fine and relevant as a character.

Sorry for forgetting.

But, you see, if the diversity was forced, I would have noticed and remembered it. As it was, it was completely natural, and I did not pay it any heed.

I watched the same player who I watched play the original game. He was quite eager to try out the expansion and I knew he would not get “political” about anything unless an elephant appeared in the room.

Early in the game, Miles consistently uses Spider-Man only to refer to Peter. His nerd buddy, whose name I don’t remember except it sounds like Genki, calls him out on it and tells him “No, stop doing that. You’re Spider-Man.”

And, as the game goes on, Miles’s lines start naming him as “Spider-Man” in his subtitles. At the end of the game, when asked who he is by reporters, the people of Harlem say:

“That’s our Spider-Man.”

Stan Lee once said that he believed the reason Spider-Man took off so well is that he had a full-body suit. By all means, he was Spider-Man, but other than his sex, he could be anybody. White kids, Black kids, Asian kids, nobody could say they had the wrong skin color for the outfit, like people do with modern cosplay. All young boys could be Spider-Man.

Not “Black Spider-Man”.

Not “Asian Spider-Man”.

Spider-Man.

Stan Lee grew up in a time where it was “radical” to consider black people to be human beings. In the era where Star Trek shocked the world with the first black character on TV who was not in an unreasonably servile role, Stan Lee quickly discovered that a lot of people were affected by the social commentaries of his comics. He certainly got a lot of hate mail for “moralizing”.

So, in the most polite way that a nerd from the 1960s could, he told the haters to kiss his ass. He knew his comics were affecting people, and that the world was full of hatred and racism, so he was going to set his work in an optimistic world, not a racist caricature.

He co-created Black Panther and Falcon, and gave his full support for Luke Cage (without using his skin color as a hook.) He continued to insist on Marvel embracing human diversity into the 2010s, shortly before his passing.

Stan Lee believed that “a story without a message, however subliminal, is like a man without a soul.” He noted that even ancient fairytales and mythology were wrapped around contemporary cultural values and traditions.

When Stan Lee passed away, a lot of “yo-yos” tried to tell everybody he was racist. They knew nobody would bother to click any links or fact-check anything to see that Stan Lee was one of the least racist men in American history and, quite possibly, the only reason we have black superheroes at all.

It’s that kind of yo-yo who would exploit Miles Morales’s ethnicity for personal vanity as though black or Hispanic people were trophies.

It’s that kind of yo-yo who accuses every single creator who ever features a non-white protagonist of cheap racial baiting.

It’s because of yo-yos that we need people like Stan Lee to begin with.

I have no doubt that Stan Lee was delighted with Miles Morales, and probably just as delighted with Miguel o’Hara, and Spider-Gwen, and every other wild new take on Spider-Man.

But I think Stan would agree with me that Miles Morales is not “Black Spider-Man”.

He is just Spider-Man.
