Not gonna lie, I think a big part of this might be a Vax issue?
Like. Stream Vax is great and complicated and flawed! And meshes with Keyleth beautifully because of their respective strengths and weaknesses and hangups! Part of why they have so much time between the kiss and getting together is because as the situation changes their respective reservations/concerns do too, and it takes a while to align and that's Interesting!
Vax in TLOVM feels a lot like the fandom caricature of Vax. A brooding black hole who is sad and mopey and sometimes says something Deep or Hilarious, but only sometimes because he is Brooding and Tragic, and has given 1000% of his life to the Raven Queen. When that's... really not who he is (and I don't think Keyleth would be in love with that version of Vax either).
I'd hoped that after Season 2 'the Vax and Scanlan season', Season 3 would balance things better. Especially after Vex and Keyleth's arcs each getting shunted into single episodes, and Vax cannibalized the acquisition of Trinket. But... well.
If this is how they're juggling Vax and Vaxleth now (by just holding Keyleth's ball in one hand and yeeting Vax's comically high over and over), I'm worried about how they'll do in a hypothetical season 4 or 5 when things get *very* delicate.
(To be clear I don't think this is a Liam issue, I think it's a writing/pacing issue, and them trying to keep the Raven Queen angle very much at the forefront. When, I dunno, Vax could have gotten visions about Percy or Scanlan or both to fuss over at some other point, or about all the deaths Raishan caused. Matron why did you cockblock them with a vision like that, seriously. rude!)
to be totally honest i don't know if i've spent enough minutes of my life thinking about vax to give a good answer to this, but i totally agree that there's no way to know how they're gonna do future vaxleth scenes when they're approaching it quite differently here. i was already Very surprised by how different these first three eps are from the events of the stream so it kinda feels like we're just rewriting the campaign at this point, and the jury's still out on whether or not that's overall a good or bad thing, i think

Uta... may be complete now?
I'm not sure, I wanted to include custom voice acting for her, but I've never got the time alone to actually record anything yet, so that may have to wait for later.
I also was going to include a Climax Super (she has engine features based on KOF XV), but it seems like my plan was too ambitious for my current skill level. I'll probably add that in a later update...
As a celebration of her completion(?), have a little combo I figured out using both of her supers:
(Mai character is by animochi, I don't have a link for them but I know they're on MUGEN Archive and MUGEN Free-for-All)

Drawing the Sides in outfits I own, Part 2: The Creativitwins, Remus and Roman!! Part 1: Patton So I kind of alluded to it in my last post but I had these two sketched up while drawing Patton and thought I'd clean them up for posting too! Roman's outfit is a typical autumn/spring outfit for me (minus the sword) of blue jeans, green trainers and my comfy bomber jacket. Remus' on the other hand is a casual party outfit, of chunky studded belt, black ankle boots, fishnets and vest with a funny slogan. Hope you enjoy! I have an idea for Virgil already so we'll see if I get around to drawing him too...

Thoughts on Disney's Wish
Tumblr media
Just got out of the theater from watching Wish and I have to agree with the critics on this one. The plot was interesting, sure, but this definitely felt like a movie celebrating Disney then it's own project. It felt like a Disney movie ad rather than its own film. Which, in and of itself, is pretty disappointing. Those fun Disney Easter eggs felt more like giant flashing neon signs. If you didn't get it, they'd bash you over the head with it later. And there were so many of them, you couldn't appreciate the clever ones and it just became a distraction. My other big gripe is the music. I don't mean the score, that was delightful. I means the songs. Typically, songs in musicals are used to move the story along. Every time a song occurred, it felt either out of place or it ground the building momentum to a halt. I don't know what they were going for, but they did not achieve it. I don't know if the styles weren't a good match or if the transitions failed, but either way, it didn't flow well. The amount of talent in this cast seems incredibly wasted.
For the positives, I love the art style. It's very storybook come to life and I was enchanted. The way they defeat the villain was actually quite moving and, I feel, desperately needed for today's audience. Nothing is stronger than our collective voices.
Final Grade: C
I think the basic concept of the movie was fun, but it lacked the Disney magic so beloved from its Renaissance. I am not going to buy a physical copy when it come out. I am not going to choose to watch it again. But if someone were to say, "Hey, let's watch Wish." I wouldn't object. I'd just shrug my shoulders and say, "Sure".

The guest presses a fingernail to the vein on his throat, but does nothing to open it. He simply taps against it, a clear rhythm of two-one-two-three. His lips move, as if casting a spell, but he doesn't actually voice what he thinks: Water, may it be just water, may it do nothing to quench his thirst, nothing at all. "Sure, sure. Take your fill. Your teeth and nails are strong enough, right?" he says and smiles slyly.
He does not even answer; instantly Renfield's mouth is at the guest's neck. The savagery of teeth biting down into skin is thrilling, uncomplicated by any scruples as he twists and tears to make up for their bluntness. In the release of this beastly hunger there is even a quieting of his guilt, his embarrassment. To bite down and make the flesh part feels so very good.
Lips and tongue work over the broken skin eagerly to suck up the thick, red stream of LIFE coursing through the veins of such a powerful being — life that can be his, can be Renfield's. How wonderful it is to be rewarded, how excellent to take—
Water? The first pull slides over his tongue and down his throat and it tastes of nothing but clear, bland water. He falters, and the instant of stillness cannot but make his confusion obvious to the body under his mouth and hands. But surely this can't be... So he drinks and drinks, more and more heavily, waiting for the spark, the metallic tang of blood to slake his thirst, and he clutches more forcefully at the man, and he bites again, and again, and again, desperate, dizzy, starving. It is a frenzy, far beyond what the guest's offer could be understood to justify, but still his jaw works and his teeth sink and all there is in this gore is water!
Renfield makes an animal noise of frustration, and he thinks to himself, 'This is a trick. I have been lied to again and it is a damned trick!' Are they all so cruel, he had wondered only moments ago, and now the answer is clear as flowing water: yes. All cruel, all selfish, all temptations and takings and never justice. This useless, inert water may do nothing to warm his weakened, blood-starved body, but his fury does.
And that is when he begins to CHEW. "Liar!" He growls as he makes his teeth meet in the guest's neck and he starts to pull.

Silly slasher idea: You know those (usually terrible) romance stories where two girls are fighting over the same dude? Well, what if instead of two girls fighting for the romantic affections of a guy, it’s two female slashers trying to kill the same guy. The dude has NO idea why they’re trying to kill him, so he has to figure out who they are and why they’re determined to murder him specifically. All while trying not to die.

I'm sorry, but these just are not at all analogous situations.
Ah, see that's where i disagree (respectfully, of course).
Yes, the narrative absolves Stede of Nigel's death, but not on a technicality of whether or not he "actually" caused his demise. Stede is absolved because Nigel was a dick and got what was coming for him. On this show, bigots are wasted and no one needs to feel bad about it.
Nigel's death made Stede realize he is capable of terrible things. This isn't a terrible thing, but leaving his family was. Stede flashes back to Mary as he goes to his execution; that's the guilt that isn't resolved, that's the one morally wrong thing he did, this is what he feels he deserves to be executed for.
But! On the other hand killing Nigel (for whatever value of the word) is probably the first time in his life Stede defends himself against abuse. It is set up by showing us flashbacks to Stede's childhood, moments in his life where he was powerless, a victim of violence. He hits Nigel in the head and suddenly, isn't a victim anymore.
He's someone who can use violence to protect himself and others.
The scene with Ned is set up very similarly to the one with Nigel, I'd say. Both times, his ship is boarded. Both times, the catalyst is the soon-to-be-dead man taunting and humiliating Stede, insulting his friends. Ned, as I mentioned, uses racially charged insults against Ed, something that's always been a crime worthy of death on this show, not to mention the other explicit damage he does.
Of course the scenes aren't the same: Stede now knows for sure that hitting someone in the head with a heavy object will kill them, for one. Stede is, as you correctly point out, safe. He is warned against going through with it (when Ed says "I don't respect you enough to kill you", part of what that means is "You're not worth the dmaage killing you would do to me", don't you agree?).
There's a brief flashback to child!Stede's worst moments before he kills Ned. He's not that child anymore. He can hit back now.
And he does.
(I wrote a bit more about how I think it fits into the ongoing theme of violence in ofmd here, but I think you won't agree with that either 😅)
I'm not saying this is a good course of action. I can understand why you do not like this. I, too, would have preferred it if this had been a moment for Stede to realize that violence is poison, but I also think he's not quite there yet.
All I'm saying is, that this, to me, is a believable progression of his character, and a believable way to set up conflict between the two protagonists.
longer post to follow but i really don't understand people who thought stede killing ned and setting that dude on fire was out of character?? no??? throwing the violin at ned's head was only a tiny step further than hitting nigel with the brass sperm whale, and we dealt with that; established that this is something stede would do and feel no real remorse for. my boy is unhinged, he would kill a man and wouldn't feel bad about it either (especially if said man called ed classist and racially charged insults, hello??).
what was, however, out of character was him calling ed a coward

I've always been dying to know what it was that Aslan said to Edmund in this conversation. Guess it's one of those things we'll just never know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway I did this a little while ago but have been thinking of painting it again with brighter colours... maybe... then again I probably won't be bothered to. We'll see.
