well seems like everyone’s favourite couple is no longer together. charles leclerc and his longtime girlfriend of 7 years y/n y/l/n have accordingly split up. neither have commented on their breakup, but their shared photos have all been deleted from their social accounts and they have unfollowed one another. we wish them both the best in the future and will miss all the charles and y/n content we’ve gotten over these years!

The Golden Age of Japanese Talent in Western Motorsports

So, the heavy rumor at this point in F1 is that Sergio Perez's position at Red Bull has become untenable. An expensive release clause and a lack of a clear alternative has protected Perez for awhile now, but a truly dismal end to the 2024 season has meant Red Bull is willing to pay the price to get rid of him.

Not unlike McLaren with Daniel Ricciardo in 2022.

So, who is getting the nod to Red Bull?

Liam Lawson, it seems. This has pissed off a lot of fans, who feel that Yuki Tsunoda has performed well enough and has spent enough time at Alpha Tauri/VCARB to earn a chance at Red Bull.

Red Bull feels otherwise, and it seems to be because Yuki Tsunoda is at RB as a favor to engine supplier Honda, and Red Bull does not see Tsunoda continuing with them once they switch to Ford.

This got me thinking about Japanese drivers in motorsports, western motorsports in particular. I know that sounds just a bit orientalist and I apologize for that, but a variety of cultural, linguistic, and geographic factors have created a lot of barriers for Japanese drivers to come over here.

Japanese talent instead seems to focus on domestic competitions: Super Formula, Super GT, the Suzuka 8 Hour, etc, etc.

Meanwhile, Japanese talent in the west is most often associated with a Japanese manufacturer. This is what I want to talk about today.

An early prominent example of this is Satoru Nakajima, who Honda tried to put in a Williams in 1986. Frank Williams refused, reasoning that Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell was a much stronger lineup. Thus, Honda went to their other customer team in Lotus, and Nakajima was put into the car in 1987, partnering Ayrton Senna.

Ayrton won two races and finished third in the standings.

Satoru...did not. His best result was a fourth place.

Nevertheless, Satoru continued with Lotus in 1988, now alongside Nelson Piquet. Now, nobody was touching McLaren that year and Lotus slipped to fourth in the constructors' championship, but Nakajima was actually closer to Piquet than he was to Senna. Granted, he only scored one point, but in terms of pace and performance, he was a lot closer.

Satoru Nakajima - nor Aguri Suzuki, who also appeared in F1 around this time - didn't accomplish much, but they did pave the way for the 1990s, which would turn out to be a golden age for Japanese drivers in western motorsports.

On the Formula One side of things, we had Nakajima, Suzuki, Naoki Hattori, Ukyo Katayama, Toshio Suzuki (no relation), Hideki Noda, Taki Inoue, Shinji Nakano, and Toranosuke Takagi all made appearances.

A number of these guys, most prominently Shinji Nakano and Tora Takagi, would also make appearances in CART, where Honda and Toyota were engine suppliers.

The racing series where Japanese talent shined brightest, however, was Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing, now known as MotoGP. Here, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki made sure that Japanese manufacturers were well represented, and the 1997 season is probably the best example of that.

Australian Mick Doohan was dominant, yes, but behind him...the Japanese were all over the series. Teammate Tadayuki Okada won the Indonesian Grand Prix and finished second in the championship, whilst Takuma Aoki on a Repsol Honda entered NSR500V - a cheaper V2 variant of the V4 NSR500, meant for customer teams - finished fifth with three podiums.

Takuma's brother, Nobuatsu Aoki was third on another V4 Honda, taking four podiums and managing to just barely finish ahead of Repsol's Alex Crivillé, who was hampered by a midseason injury.

It wasn't limited to just Honda either, as Yamaha had the famous Norifumi Abe, who won three races himself - the 1996 Japanese GP at Suzuki, the 1999 Rio de Janeiro GP at Jacarepaguá, and then the 2000 Japanese GP, also at Suzuka - but was more known for wild and aggressive performances.

Norifumi was so famous at this point that a young Valentino Rossi used Rossifumi as his first nickname.

Before there was the Doctor, there was Rossifumi.

So yeah, in 1997, there were four Japanese riders in the top ten of the championship, and while none of them could quite match Mick Doohan, neither could anyone else back then.

So, what happened to all this?

That's the difficult question really. My first thought was that maybe it was the switch from 500cc bikes to the 990cc bikes of the MotoGP era. Perhaps the increased cost and professionalization of the grid reduced the number of Japanese riders.

The problem is that it doesn't quite hold true. Daijiro Kato in 2002 was shaping up to be the best Japanese prospect perhaps ever, before his career was cut short by a tragic death at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix.

Did that death kill the Japanese stomach for motorcycle racing? I mean, maybe, but it sure didn't in the moment.

Abe was still around, as were Tohru Ukawa and Noriyuki Haga, while Shinya Nakano spent the mid-2000s dragging his Kawasaki into contention whenever he could, and Makoto Tamada won at Rio and Motegi in 2004 on the Camel Honda, giving us the first multi-win season for a Japanese rider.

It more just seemed to fade out over the course of the 2000s.

By the 2010s, Japanese participation in MotoGP was reduced to one satellite Honda rider and then maybe a wildcard ride or two from the Yamaha or Suzuki test teams at Motegi.

By the 2020s, that rider was Taka Nakagami, but for 2025, that seems to be changing.

The Idemitsu LCR Honda - the Honda reserved for Asian talent - will go to Thai rider Somkiat Chantra. Surprisingly though, this does not mean the end to a Japanese rider on the grid, as Ai Ogura has been signed by Trackhouse to ride an Aprilia.

This is a big deal, because it marks the first time in twenty years that a Japanese rider was picked entirely on merit, having denied a chance to go to LCR Honda to stay in Moto2 and prove himself.

And prove himself he did, because Ai Ogura won three races and the Moto2 championship in 2024. These wins were at Catalunya, Assen, and Misano too, so these are classic European venues.

He's not just a Suzuka/Motegi specialist, he might just be the real deal.

Nem tanto ao mar nem tanto à terra. Senão vejamos:

1988: o já bicampeão Prost provavelmente não imaginou a enrascada que havia se enfiado ao não vetar a ida de Senna para a McLaren que, com os novos motores Honda, se tornaria imbatível. Prost e Senna são amigos e desenvolvem juntos os carros. Em Suzuka, Senna é pole e larga no lado sujo da pista mas, aparentemente, isso ainda não era um problema. Ele quase deixa o motor morrer na largada, faz uma corrida de recuperação incrível e ultrapassa Prost na reta após este se enrolar com um retardatário. Senna é campeão;

1989: Prost está decidido a não deixar Senna repetir o feito em cima dele. Eles ficam de mal e passam a esconder as alterações nos respectivos carros. Em Suzuka, Senna é pole e larga no lado sujo da pista mas, aparentemente, isso ainda não era um problema. Prost possivelmente queima a largada mas não recebe punição. Apenas em 2010 haveria um sistema automático para detectar situações como essa. Desta vez Senna, precisando da vitória, não consegue ultrapassar Prost até a o momento da manobra “tudo ou nada” antes da chicane. Prost de forma desleal bate em Senna e seu amigo Balestre completa o serviço. Anos mais tarde ele mesmo confessa que atuou com a intenção de prejudicar Senna. O que ninguém fala é que o brasileiro provavelmente não seria bicampeão mesmo se tivesse essa vitória confirmada. A decisão iria para o último GP da temporada na Austrália com Senna precisando de mais uma vitória. Acontece que caiu uma chuva torrencial e o brasileiro, não enxergando nada, espatifou sua McLaren num retardatário. Teria sido diferente se valesse o título? Dos 26 carros que largaram, 18 abandonaram aquela corrida;

1990: Prost vai para a Ferrari e briga novamente pelo título com Senna. Em Suzuka, Senna é pole e larga no lado sujo da pista mas, AGORA, isso se transforma num terrível problema. Desta vez é Senna quem provoca a batida na largada em uma atitude muito, mas muito feia mesmo e termina com o bi. Balestre poderia muito bem ter inventado qualquer coisa para penalizá-lo (uma nova largada com carros reserva talvez) mas preferiu deixar por isso mesmo;

1991: Senna corre praticamente sozinho e é tri. Vence pela primeira vez em Interlagos na famosa corrida em que teve problemas de câmbio no final. Em Suzuka a posição da largada é alterada e a pole finalmente vai para o lado emborrachado da pista. No final, Senna entrega a vitória para Gerhard Berger, a Williams mostra uma clara evolução e um tal de Michael Schumacher estreia na F1;

1992: a Williams passa a dominar o circo com suas várias inovações eletrônicas. Mansell desfila enquanto que Patrese, Senna e Schumacher brigam pelo vice. Senna vence três corridas (Mônaco inclusive, numa corrida inesquecível) mas termina o campeonato em quarto lugar. Schumacher vence sua primeira corrida em Spa com a Benetton e termina em terceiro com três pontos a mais que o bicampeão;

1993: para desespero do brasileiro, Prost volta de seu período sabático para correr de Williams (patrocinada também pela SEGA!) com a exigência explícita de que Senna não fosse seu companheiro. Finalmente ele havia aprendido. Senna tem uma temporada espetacular, vence cinco corridas e termina com o vice-campeonato. Destaques para a segunda vitória em Interlagos, a sexta em Mônaco e a “volta de Deus” em Donington Park;

1994: justo na vez de Senna, a F1 muda de forma irresponsável o regulamento para deter a dominância da Williams. Influência de Balestre? Não pois ele havia perdido a presidência da FIA para Max Mosley no ano anterior. Infelizmente ficamos privados da oportunidade de acompanhar a disputa entre Senna e Schumacher, o que teria sido espetacular.

Magyar csapat is indul a FIM Endurance Világbajnokságon a HUMDA támogatásával

Szeptember 14-15. között rendezik meg a FIM Endurance Világbajnokság (EWC) idei negyedik futamát a franciaországi Paul Ricard pályán Le Castelletben. A nemrég alakult Hungarian Endurance Racing Team by Moto-Jungle Racing négy versenyzője Sebesty��n Péter, Kovács Bálint, Görbe Soma és Számadó Máté a Superstock kateg��riában versenyeznek majd. A FIM Endurance Világbajnokság (EWC) egy 1980-ban indult hosszútávú versenysorozat, amely a nemzetközi szövetség, a Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) alá tartozik. Az EWC 2024-es szezonja két 24 és két 8 órás időtartamú versenyből áll. A sorozat áprilisban kezdődött a franciaországi Le Mans-ban megrendezett 24 órás futammal, majd ezt követte a belgiumi Spa-i 8 órás verseny júniusban és a japánban lebonyolított Suzuka 8 órás futam júliusban. A szezonzárót, a legpatinásabbnak számító Bol d'Or 24 órás versenyt a franciaországi Paul Ricard pályán rendezik szeptemberben 14. és 15. között. Az Endurance világbajnokságon Formula EWC és Superstock kategóriában indulnak a csapatok, a HERT az utóbbiban. Az EWC versenyek különlegessége a látványos állórajt, amikor a versenyzők a pálya egyik oldalán sorakoznak fel, majd futva közelítik meg a másik oldalon felsorakoztatott motorokat, majd nyeregbe pattannak és elindulnak az első kanyar felé. A motoroknál fontos előírás, hogy általános megjelenése nem térhet el a széria modelltől. A Superstock motorok legalább 175 kilogramm súlyúak. Az endurance azaz hosszútávú versenyek nem kizárólag a tempóról szólnak, hanem a kitartásról, így különösen nagy kihívást jelentenek, mivel a résztvevőknek nemcsak gyorsnak, hanem tartósan megbízhatónak is kell lenniük a 8-24 órán át tartó futamokon. – Büszkék vagyunk arra, hogy a HUMDA és a MAMI együttműködésével egy magyar csapat is lehetőséget kap, hogy megmutassa tehetségét a nemzetközi porondon. Ez a verseny nem csak a versenyzők számára jelent hatalmas lehetőséget, de az egész magyar motorsport számára is, hiszen a világ legjobb csapatai között mérhetjük meg magunkat – mondta Rizmayer Gábor, a Hungarian Endurance Racing Team vezetője. A HUMDA és a MAMI közös munkája tette lehetővé, hogy a magyar csapat a legmodernebb technológiával és a legkorszerűbb felszerelésekkel vegyen részt a versenyen. A versenymotor alapja a BMW M1000RR motorkerékpár, melyet a szabályoknak megfelelően készítettek fel a viadalhoz. A felkészülés során a csapat négy különböző versenypályán a csehországi Brno-ban, a szomszédos Szlovákiaringen, a hazai Pannóniaringen, valamint a verseny helyszínéül szolgáló Paul Richardon tesztelt, hogy a lehető legjobb formában állhassanak rajthoz. A felkészülés végére sikerült megtalálni azokat a beállításokat, amivel a versenyzők megközelítették a tavalyi top időeredményeket. A jelenlegi csapat versenyzői olyan fiatal tehetségek, akik tagjai vagy tagjai voltak a HUMDA Zrt. Hungarian Motorsport Academy (HMA) utánpótlásnevelési programjának, pályafutásukat a társaság évek óta támogatja. Mindannyian fiatal koruk óta versenyeznek. Sebestyén Péter 30 éves, hazánk egyik legtapasztaltabb versenyzője. Versenyzett a Red Bull Rookies Cup-ban, a Spanyol bajnokságban 125 ccm-es kategóriában, Moto GP 125-ös kategóriában, IDM 125 European Junior Cup-ban, World SBK-ban, World SSP-ben is. A Supersport-világbajnokságon a HUMDA együttműködésével indult. Kovács Bálint 23 éves, a legtapasztaltabb hazai Endurance-versenyzőnek számít, harmadik éve indul a világbajnokság futamain, eddig 7 viadalon vett részt. Jelenleg az IDM-ben (Nyílt Német Gyorsasági Bajnokság) szerepel a gyári BMW csapatban. Görbe Soma 19 éves, Northen Talent Cup bajnok, az Alpok-Adria STK 600-ban összesített 2. helyezést ért el. Idén megnyerte az IDM Pro Stock 1000 bajnokságot. Korábban a HUMDA pilótájaként indult a FIM Moto3 Junior világbajnokságon és a Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup mezőnyében. Számadó Máté 19 éves, a Super Sport 300 (SSP 300) kategóriában világbajnokságon szerzett pontot, az IDM 300 bajnokságban háromszor állt a dobogón. Jelenleg az Alpok-Adria SST 1000 kategóriájában versenyez. A világbajnoki sorozaton belül a Superstock kategória talán még erősebb, mint a Formula EWC, mivel itt a szabályrendszernek köszönhetően még kisebbek a motorok közötti eltérések. Ráadásul a Superstock-specialista csapatok mellett minden gyári EWC csapatnak van ebben a kategóriában fiókcsapata, ami tovább növeli a versenyt. A hosszútávú versenyeknél 24 óra alatt rendkívül sok technikai és egyéb probléma adódhat, azonban a felkészülési időszak alatt futott tesztek eredményei óvatos optimizmusra adnak okot. A csapat elsődleges célkitűzése a célba érés tehát, hogy értékelhető helyen be tudják fejezni a futamot. – Ez az esemény mérföldkő a magyar motorsport történetében. A verseny nemcsak a kitartásról és gyorsaságról szól, hanem a csapatmunkáról és a stratégiáról is. Biztosak vagyunk benne, hogy a magyar csapat megállja a helyét a legjobbak között – emelte ki Lévay Károly technikai vezető, a Magyar Motorkerékpár Technikum és Szakképző Iskola részéről. A HUMDA és a MAMI továbbra is elkötelezettek amellett, hogy támogassák a hazai tehetségeket és hozzájáruljanak Magyarország motorsport sikereihez a nemzetközi porondon.
