Just to point out that while George Santos was finally expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives after being charged with 23 felony crimes, committing astounding levels of fraud, and fabricating absolutely stupid amounts of his background, it still required the heavy-lifting of Democratic members to close the deal, and a majority of Republicans voted to allow him to remain.
House Speaker Mike Johnson -- who was unanimously elected as the Republican leader of the House by GOP members in October -- continued to demonstrate his moral leadership by voting to let Santos hold on to his seat in Congress.

What it feels like when Trumpisti try to make friends or when anyone from either side says that we should treat both sides equally or when people say that everyone's opinion is legitimate no matter how abhorrent.

I don’t care about your position in life, nobody is fucking above the law. SCOTUS disagrees, apparently.
In my ideal world the Dems use this to their advantage and go ALL FUCKING scorched earth on the Gov and the GOP can’t do shit.
Will it happen? No. They’ll be the “bigger” guys.
At this point fucking burn it all down, idgaf.

...Okay, fine. I'll be Speaker of the House.
I am obviously qualified because I hate most Republicans, just like most Republicans do.

Y’all🤣 I’ve been down at the Alabama gulf coast for vacation, and this commercial was played multiple times on all the tv stations (Mobile, AL to Pensacola, FL). While I understand that what he did is no laughing matter, it’s nice to see Beavis and Butthead’s love child get called out for his nastiness!

"We did nothing wrong. This is all Biden, indictments and impeachments and this is all about Biden, he can't do anything right. The only thing they know how to do is cheat in elections and election fraud. This is all by himself. All of these indictments that you see. I was never indicted. Practically never heard the word. It wasn't a word that registered." -- Former President Donald Trump answering questions from reporters while campaigning in New Hampshire on Oct. 23, 2023. In case anyone has missed it, Trump has been very obviously and publicly criminally indicted and arrested four times since March. Also, in case anybody has missed it, Trump remains, by far, the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination and still the clear leader of the Republican Party.

What sucks is that even if Kamala wins she still has to contend with a probable GOP Senate and Court which will slow or stop any change she wants to implement
And she knew this too because, for example, she deliberately says "When congress passes an abortion bill, I'll proudly sign it into law", instead of promising returning reproductive rights outright so she has an out and puts the responsibility on congress rather than her
An undeniably skilled rhetorician, I just really wish this country wasn't a fucking circus and the court wasn't a shitshow right now

Was trump really able to do that much? One of the criticisms I keep seeing is that Trump actually did things (even if people disagreed with said things) while apparently Biden's hands are tied for every issue? And I kinda feel like that's intentionally misleading? iirc Trump issued a ton of executive orders, and the bills he pushed through happened because he had majorities. Why are people expecting Biden to be able to do the same when he doesn't have that
The thing is! Trump didn't actually do that much!
Yes, he issued some awful executive orders (most of which were repealed by Biden on Day 1) and got the compliant Republican Congress to approve giant tax breaks for the rich and other traditional GOP economic thievery, but aside from that, his legislative successes were very limited. They didn't even manage to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which they really wanted to do.
By FAR Trump's biggest impact, and the one that will continue to screw us for decades in the future, is that he got to fill three Supreme Court seats with hard-right neocons, helped by Mitch McConnell's brazen cheating. Which a lot of Democrats were warning about before the election, and which Hillary Clinton herself was ALSO warning about: that SCOTUS was in a vulnerable position with many elderly or retiring justices, and the next president would reshape it for the next generation. But too many Online Leftists went Wah Wah BernieorBust, too many ordinary Americans bought into bog-standard misogyny and decades of Republican smears against HRC, and here we are.
Likewise: anyone who bitches about "Biden Not Doing Anything" has not read a single actual news source, or made any effort to educate themselves on what he has actually accomplished, in an extremely adverse legislative climate and with Manchin and Sinema reliably on hand to torpedo his agenda in the Senate. Biden has actual PAGES of accomplishments made through the legislative process, which are harder to undo than just repealing executive orders. I'm not a fan of him, say, approving the Willow project and I hope the administration hears about it, but that doesn't take away from the fact that yet again, a Democratic president was called on to fix the absolute stinking shitshow left by the Republican incumbent, and not only did that, but made some huge generational (and long-overdue) systemic reforms, even in a difficult political climate, because he worked through the system and made sure they stuck. What a thought.

so i’ve been digging through the US map of congressional districts just for fun bc i’m a big politics nerd (both for better and for worse). and i am completely and utterly dumbfounded by how gerrymandered some of these districts are. i knew gerrymandering was a big problem and that there were some really fucked-up looking districts, but i’m nonetheless completely floored by just how stupid some of these are. and i thought i’d share with you some of my favorites.
buckle up, this is gonna be kind of a long post.
i don't think it's a secret that gerrymandering more often gets associated with republicans, but democrats are definitely guilty of it too. since most of the examples i’m gonna talk about were gerrymandered by the GOP, i thought it would be fair to start with an example of democrat-led gerrymandering. and to do that, we’re gonna head to the state of illinois.
in my opinion, illinois is the most gerrymandered dem state. and to show you what i mean, here’s their current congressional map.
Tumblr media
most of illinois’ districts are located in the chicago area, which makes sense since chicago is easily the largest population center in the state. but look at their districts.
Tumblr media
chicago is very gerrymandered and gives illinois democrats a huge advantage in the state since these districts are very uncompetitive. it's not just chicago tho. there's also this big dem scar that cuts across the entire state.
Tumblr media
like what. this district includes st. louis, springfield, and decatur, which aren't rural areas by any means (urban areas tend to favor democrats while rural areas tend to favor republicans), but it's certainly a choice to draw them all into the same district.
let's move on from illinois now and head down to louisiana. now, louisiana is an interesting case because up until now, their congressional map only had one dem district. but recently, the court system ruled that louisiana's map was racially gerrymandered and violated the voting rights act of 1965, forcing them to draw a new map before the 2024 election cycle. here is what their old map looked like vs. their new map:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
district 2 originally included both new orleans and baton rouge, louisiana's two largest cities, which is some bullshit. but district 6 was redrawn to give the state a second majority black district. so their new map, while still looking like it was drawn by a toddler who doesn't know how to color inside the lines yet, is at least slightly more representative, which is obviously a good thing and a step in the right direction, since districts are supposed to be fair and give as equal representation as possible.
alright, i'm gonna talk about one more state. this is the state that motivated me to make this post. i got actually mad when i looked at the congressional districts for this state. in my opinion, this is the most gerrymandered state in the US and it's not even close. everything is bigger here, even the corruption.
texas.
this is texas' congressional map.
Tumblr media
now, on first glance, it doesn't look terrible, right? like yeah a lot of it is red and there's definitely a couple of districts that are drawn weird, but it looks relatively normal, right? wrong. let me zoom in a little for you.
this is the dallas-forth worth metropolitan area.
Tumblr media
and this is houston.
Tumblr media
and this absolute shitshow is austin and san antonio.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT THIS ONE FUCK-ASS BLUE DISTRICT THAT RUNS SO THINLY BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES ARE YOU KIDDING ME. that's ONE district. this might be the single most egregious gerrymander i have ever seen.
anyway, i decided to make this post because this stuff is interesting to me and to raise more awareness about gerrymandering and why it's a bad thing. we shouldn't accept it or be complacent about it. everyone deserves equal representation in government and i hope to one day see gerrymandering be a thing of the past.
