2024 Media Thread: 153. Smile Precure! The Movie: Big Mismatch in a Picture Book! (2012) - 10/10★ Oh my GOD was this good. I gave it a 9.5 at first because I don't like giving full scores to stuff unless they're my favourites and then I changed it because of the amount of joy this brought me. Okay I'm going to yap tbh. I'm having a REALLY rough mental health patch right now because of trauma and diagnosis stuff in therapy and it's the worst I've been in a long time. This movie really really cheered me up and reminded me of the beauty out there. If I watched this at a different time maybe I'd have scored it a little lower but I think that's one of the beautiful things about art, sometimes it finds you at a time you really need it. Actual review below so this post isn't a mile long lmao (spoilers inc!!)
This movie was one of the cases where it's centred around the lead cure but I didn't actually mind. Maybe that's because Miyuki is my fave cure in this season or maybe it's because I felt like the movie was so good regardless. I DO think cure sunny's moments made me like her more though so that's fun. I was excited for this movie because the motif of fairytales that smile precure has so much potential and it didn't disappoint. The theme, the enemies of the stories that joined forces with precure (LOVE this trope), Nico's entire character and design all were so good. Actually it is criminal the Nico is a movie only character when her design is so peak but we can't have it all I guess. Nico was so interesting and one thing that might not seem a big thing but felt extra nice to me was that even when Nico and the Demon King were happy again they kept their dark designs and I think that's really fun actually. Miyuki being the only one to get a power up was sad but fit the story and honestly it went so hard I can't even be mad. All in all, I had a great time watching this and I'm so thankful to precure for bringing some light back to my world <3

This is my first Precure edit with my absolute favorite Precure ship.
I really love it, Heartcatch is my fave Precure season and Cure Sunshine is my absolute fave Precure.
I don't know if you're interested, but these are other seasons I've seen:
Smile Precure
DokiDoki Precure
Go Princess Precure
Maho Tsukai Precure
Happiness Charge Precure
Healin Good Precure
I'm currently watching Star Twinkle Precure.
So I'm almost halfway there, I still have to watch the other half.
Why do I have to love this franchise so much?🥲
Unfortunately I have no idea what their ship is called or if they have any.
I can't find anything about these two.😭
That's why I want to make them even more famous so that there are finally more fanarts and edits.
But I actually have a possible ship name for both of them: SunshineBlossomShipping
That's not so spectacular, the ship name is inspired by the ship name Moonlightblossomshipping(HikarixKoharu) from Pokemon and from their two Cure names. Cure Sunshine & Cure Blossom.
Okay, I know I've talked a little too much, but I couldn't help it. Now, in addition to the Guruminshipping content, there is also SunshineBlossomShipping content.🌻🌸

My thoughts on all the Precure seasons:
Futari wa Pretty Cure: 10/10 best characters, best dynamic, weighty gritty feel without being too dark which is my absolute fave, inverting the usual character tropes hard with both Nagisa and Honoka, my two favorite characters in literally anything, THE ACTION!!!!!!!, THE ANIMATION BY TETSUO YAMADA!!!!!, best most banger opening theme song, etc etc I could go on
Max Heart: not quite as good but NagiHono alone makes it a 9/10
Splash Star: good story and villains. I could not get invested in Saki or Mai at all though sorry. NagiHono was bending character tropes but Splash Star played it way safer
Yes 5: I really don't remember much
Yes 5 Go Go: Karen/Kurumi good ship. Milky Rose incredible character. Syrup my bird son. But I don't remember the rest lmao
Fresh: oh this was my first season! Great story, incredible middle arc, Setsuna my beloved
Heartcatch: mostly solid start but I didn't care for the fairies or like the entire second half of the season LMAO
Suite: For a season I never actually talk about I thought it was pretty good
Smile: BIG FAVE I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS AND THE OUTFIT DESIGNS. would be my favorite if FuWa didn't exist
Doki Doki: Rikka and Makopi, and like three genuinely funny episodes, are the only reason I survived this season intact
Happiness Charge: dropped LMAO
Go Princess: Didn't watch, no reason just haven't gotten to it
Mahou Tsukai: I love Mofurun so much. Very gay but it's no NagiHono IMO. Weirdly paced story but overall I liked it
Kira Kira: EXTREMELY fucking gay and I liked it. In this house we stan Cure Custard
Hugtto: I only watched the NagiHono episodes sorry
Star Twinkle: OH I LOVED IT. Genuinely good AND ACCURATE biracial rep. HikaLala 10/10 ship.
Healin Good: dropped
Tropical Rouge: I genuinely loved it, Kururun is incredible and they really did have this Legendary Precure/Huge Fucking Sea Monster gay subplot
Delicious Party: dropped

Poor saki being the only sibling left out of magical girling… do you think they’d tell her or keep it a secret? I could very easily see like. Tsukasa WANTING to tell her but keeping it a secret to keep her safe and stuff.
Tumblr media
GAH precure :) hmmm this is hard since there are now 20 seasons but my personal recommendations
- heartcatch precure - flower themed and noted as the most popular season and one of the darkest of the seasons (but thats a low bar precure is lighthearted for the most part). if you enjoy ojamajo doremi or pmmm then youll most likely enjoy this one.
- go! princess precure - princess and dream themed and regarded as another one of the most popular seasons. i love this message this season delivers and it carries its emotional beats very nicely.
- suite precure - music themed and a very underrated season. if you watch this one do NOT look up anything for it its the best experience going into it spoiler free. the plot twists are really interesting imo.
- star twinkle precure - space and imagination themed and my personal favorite season. the charas are abs my faves and seeing their dynamics together is very lovey. also if you go for this one. watch the movie. aughaugahugahahhdhjss
- tropical rouge precure - tropical and makeup themed season abt motivation and that similar passion. tbh i have not finished this season all thr way through but its a strong one i always here so im adding it here
- hirogaru sky precure - the newest season that started last weekend! its currently airing so if you want to enjoy the live precure experience then abs watch this one!
all precure seasons are strong for their own reasons so if another one i didnt list here piques your interest then go for it! these are ones i personally like hehe
and to answer the main ask. AUGHHHH.
i like to think the same as well. i feel like touya and tsukasa do confess their identity to her and she abs keeps it a secret bc supporting chara saki would be a fun addition to the dynamic too aaaahhh.
it feels wrong to keep that from saki of all people aaaa

Slowly crawling back into my PreCure phase, but the question is: what season do I watch? I'm thinking: Heartcatch or Happiness Charge, since I've only seen: smile(first watch bias), dokidoki, go princess (fave) star twinkle(so captivating), healing good (what a banger) and tropical Rouge (idek remember what happened in that one tbh)

how would one go about getting into precure with no prior attachment to it? feels like there's a lot of content
Precure while being AGGRESSIVELY long is actually pretty easy to get into all things considered.
Every season (not including max heart or p5gogo which are continuations of the previous seasons) are all in self contained plots which tend to average 48 24 min episodes a season (which takes a basically a full 24 hours to binge)
I do recommend watching everything in chronological order since there are all star movies which are massive crossover events that happen every once in a while and every season tends to have one movie attached to it
A big thing you need to understand is that precure is looooooooooooooong (most fans including me! havent even finished it) and pretty much 90% of it are filler episodes, filler is what most people come to precure for tho. You're meant to get invested into the girls and care about the mundane adventures just as much as the magical ones.
If you want to go for filler fluffy stuff, go for Delicious Party first, it's one of the shorter seasons (clocking in at a total time of 18 + 1h11m of movie) and is pure fluffy goodness. It's my personal fave even though that's a SUPER controversial opinion in fandom
But if you wanna go for the fan favs, go for Smile (there's a reason it was one of the only ~3 seasons that got dubbed! (Let's not talk about how bad glitter force was as a dub tho)), A la Mode, Go Princess or Fresh, since they're all held in pretty high regards
Happy watching!

(Series: Demon’s Crest | Artist: Yukiko Horiguchi)
No. of Reviews: 5
List of Reviews:
Demons’ Crest 1
Hamefura 12
Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru 5
YouZitsu 9
Astrea Record 3
As promised last month, I’m going to use this post to delve into my top 10 anime of 2022. It ended up being long and I can tell that I’m not going to be able to do much about that without really cutting more details out and I’ve already tried to make it shorter so I’m just going to put it under a cut instead. Before the list, here are some honorable mentions: Summer Time Rendering, Delicious Party Precure, and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Really, GWitch should be on the list but I’m still traumatised from the disappointment that was the second half of Ranking of Kings so I’m being cautious. It’ll probably end up on next year’s list if all goes well with the second half.
10. Raven of the Inner Palace - I watched this one shortly after it finished airing and was very impressed. The story was really interesting and engaging, the characters were charming and I loved watching them grow, and the lore was fascinating. The only major issue is that it does end of a somewhat incomplete note. It feels like it wraps up Shoxue’s character arc satisfyingly but it’s clear that there’s more story to come. I definitely would be interested in reading the novels but I’d struggle a bit with some of terminology in Japanese so if I did read it, it would be in English.
9. Shadow House 2nd Season - The first season just missed out on being one of my faves of 2021 so I was pleased that it got another chance so soon and it more than earned it’s place on my top 2022 list. The plot of season 2 was consistently engaging and I appreciated the focus on characters like Rosemary/Maryrose and Barbie/Barbara who I was interested in from the first season. I hope we get more but I know I’m going to be reading the manga when I can either way.
8. Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 - While I didn’t like the second season of Superstar quite as much as the first, I did still really enjoy my time with it. I was a bit iffy on the new characters at first but they did grow on me by the second half and I was able to enjoy it a lot better. I think the best part of this season is the introduction of Wein. She’s got such a cool character design and a lovely voice and her performances were so good. I was also incredibly fond of the episode about Ren’s gaming addiction. I was initially annoyed about the ending but now I just can’t wait to spend more time with these characters and see what’s in store for season 3.
7. Bocchi the Rock! - There were three things that stood out to me while watching this anime: the music, the visual gags, and the representation of anxiety. The music was great and the visual gags were hilarious and I really related to Bocchi. Aside from the relability, I also really liked that Bocchi was allowed to grow throughout the twelve episodes. Compared to something Komi Can’t Communicate, which I do like but it has flaws of course, where it’s been 2 seasons and Komi still can barely string together a sentence, it was nice to see Bocchi actually grow and be able to talk to others in ways that she couldn’t have imagined at the beginning. I really appreciated that. I think I will rewatch this one in the future as I wasn’t in the best of moods when I did watch it but I still enjoyed it and I really hope we get more.
6. Spy x Family - I don’t know that I have anything to say about this show that hasn’t already been said. It’s fun show and I enjoyed watching it every week, though there were a few dull moments. I enjoyed seeing the family grow and it’s such a good-looking show. I can’t wait for more.
5. Sasaki and Miyano - Sometimes a simple romcom is all you need. I’ve been a fan of the Sasaki and Miyano manga for years and I was so excited for the anime adaptation. While I was a bit wary of the adaptation choices at the start - like the awkward character designs and anatomy and the random cut-aways to cats doing stuff, it melted my heart by the end and became such a joy to watch. I loved seeing these two characters fall in love with each other week by week. It was just so sweet.
4. Lycoris Recoil - This anime was such a blast to watch each week and to look at all the new fanart of the characters and the ships. The animation was superb and I loved the characters and watching them and their relationships develop. I know a lot of people were disappointed that the story didn’t challenge it’s own flawed premise but I think it was satisfying as a story about Chisato and Takina and I appreciated it for that, though I do wish we had gotten more from characters like Fuki and Mizuki. I know we’re getting a sequel and I’m cautiously optimistic about it.
3. The Case Study of Vanitas: Part II - I enjoyed the first half of Vanitas well enough but Part II really surpassed my expectations. I was so invested in the story and the characters and it was such a pleasure to watch each week. I hope we get more of the anime at some stage.
2. Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Ultraromantic - To be honest, I wasn’t massive fan of the first two seasons of Kaguya-sama. It had some great visual gags but I wasn’t attached to the characters or anything and a lot of the gags fell flat for me. And then Ultraromantic came along and I finally fell in love with it. Each episode was hilarious and I was surprised by how invested I was in the romance aspect. I loved all the visual gags and this one stands out as being one of the most memorable anime that I watched last year. I can easily recall several scenes and that’s not something that I can say about most of the shows on this list. So I guess Kaguya-sama won this game.
1. The Orbital Children - This was one of those series that reminded me of how much I love sci-fi. There were so many interesting ideas and details. The plot was gripping and the characters were so much fun, especially Mina. I do think it got a bit convoluted at the end there but I still really enjoyed it and it ended up being my favourite anime of last year.

Here’s the results from the open comment field for “Favourite magical girl” from the magical girl survey from a few days back. I originally intended them to be a place where you could express your complaints if your desired option wasn’t available, but sure we can go with listing your favourite and least favourite characters too! For individual mentions, Homura was mentioned the most.
Longer comments and comments that aren’t character specific:
I’m more for the magical warrior class using the power of friendship, hope and love(all kinds) to save the day/save the world
In a combat-based magical girl show, I’d love to see an active rather than a reactive magical girl. Example, one who tries to figure out where the enemy will strike next, rather than stumbling upon it; or one who tries to figure out where the bosses flee to after they send the Monster of the Day out.
Mami Tomoe most definitely. She's kind with a hint of selfishness that means no harm. She also uses her magic in mundane and creative was such as turning the bat Sayaka brought to fight witches into a weapon that would actually harm them, and
I like emotionless characters than learn to open up as blatant metaphors for depression.
Free fall style attacks :)
I love Magic Knight Reyearth aesthetics. I love Sailor Moon but I wish her character development didn't keep disappearing at the end of each season
Tie. Madoka (for a more traditional style magical girl) Homura (for more of a dark mg)
My favorite magical girl is probably sayaka miki from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I really like the idea of exploring the self harm/destruction one could do with magical powers. Especially at such a confusing and stressful time in your life as teenage girlhood
I think either Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew, Sakura from CCS or Ahiru from Princess Tutu. I really like the witch type of characters but have not watched any show like that so far, I need to remedy that ! (Sorry, english is not my first language)
I just love when a character covers up insecurities with a rude persona - both the loud ponytail girl/biker gang type (like kyoko Sakura) & snooty rich girl that secretly cares about her friends (think mew mint & to a lesser degree cure spicy)
Idk really i think mostly i just like magical girls that have a good dose of flaws
Right now, it's probably Ichigo Momomiya/Mew Ichigo from Tokyo New Mew. I love cats so much.
My first magical girl anime was Tokyo mew mew and my favourite was Mew Mint, I don't have a top #1 magical girl in general
Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew! She's silly but grows so much. Might be the nostalgia talking though LOL
my answers make me seem like i just like dark edgy things and i guess thats true to an extent but i love the "in spite of" element of things like that   _(;;v;; 」∠)_
I really like Precure, so I’d say any of the Hugtto girls? Also the boys from Tokyo Mew Mew Ole may not be exactly this but I love them.
My fave has to be Tecna (Winx Club). She opened my path of loving most purple MGs (Like Saturn for eg.) or ones that use unusual magical girl items as weapons (like Homura with her arsenal of weapons). Would love to see more magical girls use technology as their power (that isnt reduced to just electricity tho).
my first favorite magical girl will always be usagi but also i loved michiru a lot as a child, like i wanted to be her. later on, sayaka from pmmm became one of my favorite characters of all time because her emotional torment is very similar to what i went through
Tsuyuno from MGS, Seira from Daybreak Illusion, Homura from PMMM, even Black Rock Shooter, that character type overall.
i'm a simp for cure beat
Cure Flora is my role model
Cure Custard my beloved
One of my favorites of all time has got to be Lapis Lazuli the 2nd from MGRP!
I really love Tokyo Mew Mew and Mermaid Pichi Pitch.
Ojamajo Doremi
Tokyo Mew Mew and Houkago no Pleiades.
Futago Hime
Futago hime as a second favorite
Total mentions for character names:
Madoka franchise: Madoka (x3), Homura (x7), Mami (x2), Sayaka (x5), Kyouko (x5), Kagami Masara, Momoe Nagisa, Awane Kokoro
Sailor Moon: Sailor Moon (x4), Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars (x2), Sailor Jupiter (x2), Sailor Saturn (x2), Sailor Neptune (x2)
Precure: Cure Blossom, Cure Sunshine, Cure Moonlight, Cure Beat Cure Flora (x2), Cure Custard, Cure Milky

“Night flight to San Francisco; chase the moon across America. God, it’s been years since I was on a plane. When we hit 35,000 feet we’ll have reached the tropopause, the great belt of calm air, as close as I’ll ever get to the ozone. I dreamed we were there. The plane leapt the tropopause, the safe air, and attained the outer rim, the ozone, which was ragged and torn, patches of it threadbare as old cheesecloth, and that was frightening. But I saw something that only I could see because of my astonishing ability to see such things: Souls were rising, from the earth far below, souls of the dead, of people who had perished, from famine, from war, from the plague, and they floated up, like skydivers in reverse, limbs all akimbo, wheeling and spinning. And the souls of these departed joined hands, clasped ankles, and formed a web, a great net of souls, and the souls were three-atom oxygen molecules of the stuff of ozone, and the outer rim absorbed them and was repaired. Nothing’s lost forever. In this world, there’s a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we’ve left behind, and dreaming ahead. At least I think that’s so. “ - angels in america

2024 Media Thread: 157. Dokidoki! PreCure (2013) - 10/10★ You KNOW the yap is going to be long for this one (under the cut as per <3)
It's hard not to write something that will literally reach the character limit but I'll try! This season had such a strong plot all the way through, pretty much every episode was relevant to the overarching plot and felt like it was reaching towards the goal of the resolution. Don't get me wrong I LOVE precure seasons that have a lot of episodic shenanigans going on but this felt so fleshed out and realised and I really appreciated it. I do think it stumbled a little in the middle but it all paid off in the end. Also, it kept me guessing all the way through I couldn't help but be invested, it was genuinely so engaging to watch imo. The villain concept being selfishness was really interesting. Of course many times the "selfish thoughts" people had were very minor but once again this is aimed at children so I can forgive it. I think the villain trio were fun enough but Regina definitely stole the show. All in all, despite my issues here and there with the season it felt so strong to me I couldn't bring myself to give it any less than full marks! Speaking of, it's time to talk about characters and more that include spoilers so stop reading now if you don't want to see them!! I thought the characters were fairly strong but I do have some problems. For one I think Alice wasn't fleshed out enough. I feel like, at least imo, yellow cures have this issue because they share some common traits with the pink cures that tend to be the leads. I liked her but I feel like my opinion on her didn't really shift through the majority of the season which is really sad. Secondly, I feel like Aguri had a really strong arc and was an interesting character and I did enjoy what they did with her and Regina but because I thought Regina would be the red cure and I was excited about it (Regina is my fave of the season) I couldn't really connect to Aguri at all ): Third of all I really don't love Aguri aging up as Cure Ace?? The explanation felt so flimsy and it just felt strange to me? One thing I will say though is I really enjoyed that Ida had positive traits by the end but didn't change from being a villain, idk it just felt really refreshing to me bc we all know precure LOVES a redeemable villain. Also, Regina's relationship with her dad is such a good rep of abusive parental relationships even if that wasn't the goal? idk I love her so much though. Fave eps: 14, 16, 17, 19-22, 25-27, 30, 31, 39, 40, 42-49 Fave character: Regina (Cure Diamond for the actual cures though!)

i have determined the order in which i will show my little cousin precure
This is if i don’t go with the “cut out precure team logos from paper, put them on the floor, and let him choose”, or show my faves first and others after.
Starting the minute he learns to read:
1. Smile. Great intro to what precure is about. He can be viewed as smart on the playground when he tells the others about the real origins of glitter force, and he can brag about watching all eight EXCLUSIVE episodes that don’t exist in the english version, and even the glitter force MOVIE where they go into the fairytale world. Also has enough REALLY dark and scary moments that I can get entertainment out of watching a little kid reacting, but not so many that his parents will be unhappy with me for terrifying their kid on purpose.
2. HaCha. It’s one of the lighter ones, and if you watch it when you’re older, you might get annoyed with how cheesy it can get or the gratuitous romance or the wasted potential. (don’t get me wrong, i liked hacha for the most part.) So why not enjoy it as one of the first ones you watch? Besides, after being traumatized by Joker, this makes a good recovery season.
3. GoPri. After HaCha, let’s have something with actually AWESOME writing! Besides, it’s a good idea to do the princess one soon, because my fear with this is that he’ll eventually reject precure because society will brainwash him into hating everything feminine.  (showing him precure is part of fighting against this. but considering my own experiences with the “that’s only for boys!” mentality even when i grew up in a household where it was constantly reiterated that nothing’s just for boys or just for girls, i’m not confident that it will do anything.)
4. MahouTsukai. Drastically switches up the formula which is always a good thing. And anime hogwarts. And it’s a lighter one. I hear the fight scenes in gopri scared some kids, so again, recovery season.
5. Suite. He’ll ACE music class, and there’s little Ako. And baby’s first redemption arc! (Towa doesn’t count because being un-brainwashed without any of the internal conflict doesn’t really constitute a redemption arc.)
6. Star Twinkle. ROCKETS! ALIENS! SPACE CATGIRLS! What’s not to love?
7. KiraKira. Gotta watch this one sooner or later. Let’s just hope that his parents don’t get annoyed at me for encouraging unhealthy eating habits. But that’s exactly why I put this one here: if they do, or if he doesn’t like the lack of action, we can skip straight to...
8. Fresh. I think by now, he’d be old enough that his parents won’t be unhappy with me for showing him stuff like the torture and death in the mid-season arc, the dystopia and mind controlled drone scenes in the finale, and Northa in general. (aka The Only Reason I Didn’t Show Fresh First.) Besides, after kirakira’s lack of cool battle, now we’ve got something AWESOME!!!!! And the greatest redemption arc in HISTORY. We’re starting to get darker now, and we’re starting with Fresh.
9. Healin’ Good. Last time we ever do a recovery season (heh.) It’ll definitely be finished by then.
10. HugTto. Let’s get this started!!
11. Yes5. Finally I can see him scream when the girls wear those despair masks! I put it later for a couple reasons.
12. DokiDoki. Epic plot, Regina being a badass, darker elements (Makoto’s homeworld was destroyed!), and other things. And we can hate on Aguri together.
13. Heartcatch. Saved it for second last. Can’t believe we’ve gone from 90% filler and cheesy preachiness (no offense megumi but you ARE preachy) to onscreen murder!
14. Futari Wa & Max Heart. Ending on the most unique one, complete with some of the best fights!
As to all stars movies, we’ll start up on them after Fresh and go in order.

if you want: PMMM universe / PMMM character cameos / bunch of cute magical girls / style and animation of PMMM / not quite Dark Magical Girl but not quite true Magical Girl anime
Magia Record’s 2nd season has already been announced so you know, it saves me from having to rage over the open-ended ending.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Magia Record is based on the mobile game by the same name. I WOULD HAVE played the game if the western localisation actually included the rest of the world beside the USA and Canada (ugh).
Mobile game adaptations always have certain problems and while Magia Record already has PMMM’s fans and staff, it doesn’t mean the anime doesn’t fall into the same pitfalls as similiar adaptations. The amount of characters for the Gacha component, small backstories for all of them, obvious level based story progression (story / fight / story / fight) and the main plot basically being ignored because if it’s solved too fast then what’s there to play for?
Magia Record is more of a Magical Girl anime than PMMM was. PMMM completely fell into the Dark Magical Girl sub-genre even if it had some lighthearted moments. This is the opposite; we have some dark stuff next to the more friendship/team building focused stories. Even then, the anime is a bit all over the place with its story. Our main character who basically looks like an off-brand clone of Madoka, Iroha, doesn’t remember what her wish was to become a Magical Girl. Then after certain events she remembers that she had a younger sister named Ui but nobody seems to remember her. She goes to Kamihama City where many Magical Girls are staying due to the number of witches the area is seeing. This is where our story will take place.
Which is kinda all over the place with too much stuff going on. The Magical Girls in Kamihama City basically have an HQ with a coordinator. This is where Iroha meets Togame Momoko and her team/friends. She spends some time with them is where we’re introduced to the “Uwasas” aka Rumors. They work as their name suggests. By spreading rumours of “doing x thing will make y happen” they lure people into their world. They also work similiarly to Witches except they don’t drop any Grief Seeds. After a few episodes the HQ and Momoko and co are basically forgotten and we move onto Iroha’s main squad. Yachiyo is a long time Magical Girl who doesn’t want to involve herself with others. But for some reason her house becomes the “dorm” Iroha stays in when she transfers to Kamihama. From here on we meet a some Magical Girls with their own struggles and stories who end up joining the Iroha squad and then their role becomes “say 2 lines per episode”. All this time we’re also introduced to an organization called the “Wings of Magius” who look like some kind of weird Magical Girl cult who want to “liberate all magical girls”.
I elected to exclude some really spoilery stuff but I really had to talk about how much is going on here. Meanwhile, Iroha’s search for Ui is constant but they keep getting sidetracked by either the Wings of Magius or an Uwasa so we barely make any headway in that respect.
Big PMMM fans will get to experience more of the world and see some of their faves make appearances as this story takes place during one of the timelines of Madoka and gang. But if you want something that lives up to the original, it won’t be Magia Record so lower your expectations. While the animation and style are the same as the original, the story is just way too different. And as I said it’s also open-ended and it really does feel like we got cut off in the middle of an anime.
After all that complaining, what’s with my score? Well, magical girls of course! ... Yep, that’s it. With all the subpar Dark Magical Girl anime and the complete lack of proper Magical Girl stuff (besides precure of course) seeing anything that takes the genre seriously and isn’t just complete edgy to be edgy, I had quite some fun watching Magia Record despite its shortcomings. (Even though the ending seriously left me underwhelmed so I’m really glad for S02)
[7/10] (x)
Recommend: HELL Yeah! | Yes | Eh??? | Nope | This anime killed my parents
