Ward reread rants/musings/babblings, as I go through arc 6
I don't think you get to create a cohesive fictional world without being a "control freak" (not a very fair term, but I just want to dash this off I don't intend to write essays) about it. People may advocate for 'death of the author' but the author needs to stay very much alive to actually create anything that aspires to quality. So, I'm 100% in favor of an author having unbending WOG even as I'll add my own headcanon on after the fact.
Also, as rambly as my typing gets, talking IRL to people is way worse and the folk who can pick up what I'm trying to communicate are rare (and I treasure them). I understand the frustration of "no I'm trying but you're not getting it and I'm not communicating it but I do know it: the structure of this thing is such that it behaves this way and not that way.
And hell, maybe if the Worm fans (?) hadn't made interacting with the Wormverse a tiresome and depressing exercise for WB, he'd allow that what people think about themselves and others as teenagers is likely to change profoundly if they live through another decade and if their headcrabs / traumas don't interfere too much with their thought processes and outlooks.
So I'm a WB sympathizer.
That said, if he said Ward was the least fun he had writing? It kinda shows. I discovered Worm after it was entirely complete, and in fact what with the vagaries and vicissitudes of life Pale was the first WB thing I had to wait for updates to finish. ...but I recall WB used to playfully troll the audience in the comments, and also played games with them on the side, and was just a goofy guy when he wasn't being the epic serialist. And I have to remind myself of this because he's--Cherrypop driving a murder truck over the protagonists notwithstanding--serious and tired-seeming now. (This could also be the demands of our era and aging.)
But yeah; there are WB-isms that grate on me a bit (I've kvetched about "less" for "fewer", but also there's "blood ran cold" and "sooner than later" (a regionalism? I've heard it "sooner rather than later" but maybe it's a Canuck thing?) and having a guy named Rain be intregal to the plot/action while there's actual precipitation going on and just blithely using the same words, or repeating the same word three times in two sentences. And there's more. It's maybe a style thing, and it's absolutely parseable and that means it's forgivable or even fine and I'm just being picky and wanting poetry from prose and if I don't like it I should get back to writing my own stuff and doing better, but I suspect that Ward is the "write a book in a month by getting to your wordcount and don't worry too much about editing" entry into WB's oeuvre. He had ideas, he had a story, and as John Scalzi puts it, writing is a job when you are getting paid so you do it whether your heart's in it or not and the technique from practice and the effort will get it done and you eat your mistakes and learn from them just like cooking.
(I like Scalzi's take, that if you're getting paid to write you write and damn the torpedoes or your own mood. I'll keep doing it for not-pay so that it's not a job, because I want to enjoy it. Also, I prefer the idea of the audience not getting input until the deed is done. I think if Breaking Bad had been produced in entirety without a test audience--like The Wire was--it would have been a vastly better show. But we wouldn't have Jesse to ship with Waltuh, so...YMMV.)
So yeah; I'm only on arc six in my reread, and unfortunately post-GM Victoria reminds me too much of the parts of myself that I like least* so it's hard for me to like her as a protag, but there are bits I'm looking forward to (banter with the Heartbroken and their parents, Kensie's whole deal, grumpy haughty Damselite doings) and I do set the book down reluctantly (rather than with relief) so I am enjoying much of the ride, even with some regret that it couldn't have been more fun for the author and--consequently--for the audience.
I guess it's got some similarities to the Simarillion; it adds context but part of your engagement will depend on your engagement with the previous work.
---------------------
And of course there's Amy, who I love from the beginning to end of Worm and while I could wish she could transcend her own trauma and become happy and healthy and confident and comfortable, in her own brain and social situations. (I wish that for myself too, and for each of you, and we have the freedom to be the authors of large parts of our own stories; if it's believable that any of us struggle but fail or fail to struggle, it's believable for Amy.) Well, I am rereading partly to review her situation and renew my understanding of what actually happened WRT her and also titans because it's foggy. ...but although I want what I want, some people just don't get the roll of the dice to achieve the right situation that allows them to escape their own traps.
Ward is that notional car that was put together on a Monday by skilled mechanics who maintained their professionalism and gritted their teeth and worked through their hangovers to make sure it passed diagnostics and QC, but...but.
----------------------------
Ward's also the story of how someone learns reconcile and achieve comfort with their long-established contemporary who has a monstrous side but is still a being worthy of love and consideration and can be--with patience--a close friend.
Shame that the monster side of Amy wasn't the one we're talking about here.
---------------------------------------
I could write another disjointed rant on the subject of Amy alone, but I'd best finish my reread first so I have all the info fresh in my brain-ocean.
But in case I don't? Here's my hot take, which at one point I had as long as the above but the subject is fraught, deleted entirely, wrote a different take on, it's STILL a hot take, and there are things in it that are loadbearing squick points for me so I'm leaving them deleted:
Amy, of her own free will, and in canon that is actually discussed in early Ward, temporarily turned off all of Victoria's emotions and then gave Victoria the option to remember or forget all the things Amy did that will give Victoria trauma For Ever. That was an entirely unpragmatic but arguably top-tier ethical choice for Amy to do.
Amy was monstrous. Sure, all humans are monsters at various points in their lives. Doug Forcett isn't real but he still had things to repent even after his childhood, and even if Yeshua Ben-Yosef was exactly what his marketers and fans described him as, he still intentionally tortured and caused death, not including the suffering his inactions caused. (What was he going to do? Avoid his abusive parent by spending all day in the hospital? No. That's what Amy did. Bonus; she didn't enjoy it, so it was even more saintlike than it would be if she got satisfaction from it.) (I'm saying it: Amy is bigger than Jesus. If you shoot me, be sure to carry a copy of Catcher in the Rye or it won't be any fun.)
But Amy stepped across a much bigger line than even normal human monstrosity (no sense dwelling on normal human monstrosity; it's everywhere and part of it is choosing not to see it but I have to avert my eyes sometimes or I'll become a pillar of salt) and it took her some time and a little circumstance to stop doing the monster thing. And now (late Worm through early Ward at least) she's martyring herself, (Jesus get out of my post!) or trying to stop being a martyr because it's been years and the world ended and redemption isn't 100% about martyring it's about being a better person too.
Amy--even the most heavily monstrous Amy imaginable in the text--is utterly redeemable, and closer to it than many of those who aren't framed as needing redemption.
Hang in there girl.
And I'll hang in there on my reread. The highlight of the first half of arc six is Imp bantering with Bitch and Bitch telling Victoria she's a good girl (not with that wording that would break the reality, but it was still cute) for finding a lost dog.

The global chip shortage has come for iPads and Macs What’s happening: Apple (AAPL) just had a massive quarter thanks to sales of new iPhones, iPads and MacBooks, with revenue nearly hitting $90 billion. Sales of iPhones reached nearly $48 billion, a 65% increase over the same quarter last year, as consumers continued shelling out the big bucks to upgrade to Apple’s first 5G smartphone lineup. But that wave of demand is now coming up against major supply chain issues resulting from the pandemic. In a call with analysts, Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said that the company expects revenue will be $3 billion to $4 billion lower this quarter thanks to “supply constraints.” That includes problems procuring chips, which are expected to affect the production of iPad and Macs. “We’ll have some challenges in there, and challenges in meeting the demand that we’ve got,” CEO Tim Cook said on the call. Apple shares are still up nearly 3% in premarket trading. Remember: Carmakers were among the first to sound the alarm about a shortage of microchips, which forced companies including General Motors (GM), Hyundai (HYMTF), Ford (F) and Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) to temporarily shut down plants. On Wednesday, Ford warned that the chip shortage will get worse before it gets better, and will likely cut 2021 profits by about $2.5 billion. Now, even top tech companies are dealing with the fallout. Samsung (SSNLF) told analysts on its earnings call Thursday that it’s working hard to rebalance production to reduce shortages of semiconductors and other key parts, which could weigh on sales of products like smartphones. Big picture: While the pain has spread from autos to consumer electronics, it won’t stop there. In a research note published last week, Goldman Sachs said that 169 US industries embed semiconductors in their products. The bank said its “working assumption” is that there will be a 20% average shortfall of computer chips for those affected. The problem isn’t going away anytime soon. “Because of the proprietary technologies, specialized machinery, and economics of scale needed to produce any given type of computer chip or component — and because many of the mature facilities are already operating near full capacity — the imbalance is likely to persist into the fall and possibly into 2022,” the bank’s analysts wrote. Investor insight: Wall Street is tracking how shortages could hurt corporate earnings, but it’s also trying to puzzle out what they mean for inflation, which is being closely monitored by central banks. A reduction in supply, as fewer cars and tablets are produced, could contribute to higher prices. Goldman Sachs thinks the price of affected products could rise by 0.7% to 3% this year, providing a “temporary” boost to inflation readings. Biden at 100 days: Hottest stock market since JFK The Biden bust that the Trump campaign warned of has morphed into a Biden boom, my CNN Business colleague Matt Egan reports. See here: The S&P 500 is up 8.6% since the market close on Jan. 20, the final day of the Trump presidency. That means President Joe Biden is on track for the strongest stock market performance during a new president’s first 100 days since John F. Kennedy in 1961, according to CFRA Research. The Biden rally squeaks past the 8.4% jump during the first 100 days of the Obama presidency and is well above the 5% increase in the months following former President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Friday will mark Biden’s 100th full day in office, not counting Inauguration Day. Presidents tend to get more credit — and more blame — than they deserve when it comes to the stock market’s performance. Still, the historic gains at the start of the Biden era add to a sense of optimism about America’s recovery from a once-in-a-century pandemic. “If the stock market is any indication, Wall Street appears to approve of President Biden’s attempts to corral the Covid-19 crisis and stimulate the economy,” Sam Stovall, CFRA’s chief investment strategist, told CNN Business. Remember: The US stock market recovered from the pandemic long before the election, boosted by unprecedented support from the Federal Reserve and Congress. Markets gathered momentum last fall as election chaos scenarios were avoided. Wall Street, like Main Street, cheered vaccine breakthrough announcements in November that helped fuel the Dow’s best month since January 1987. Stocks have continued to rally in 2021 as the rapid rollout of vaccines raises hopes for an economic boom. History suggests the stock market has a good chance of finishing the year in the green. Since 1932, only once did the S&P 500 end the year in the red after rising during the first 100 days of a presidential term, according to Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab. But that will require investors to continue to shrug off concerns about the virus, inflation and higher taxes. In a speech before a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, Biden reiterated his intention to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for trillions of dollars in fresh spending on infrastructure and education. “It’s time for corporate America and the wealthiest 1% of Americans to pay their fair share,” he said. The Declaration of Independence is going public A copy of the Declaration of Independence will hit the sizzling collectibles market just in time for the Fourth of July — and unlike other rare items up for sale, you don’t have to be a millionaire to own a piece of it. Rally, a trading app for classic cars, baseball cards and other memorabilia, will next month offer 80,000 shares to the public of a copy of the Declaration of Independence printed in July 1776. The item is one of just 20 copies from that period that are in private hands. It was previously displayed at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Each share will cost just $25, making it a $2 million initial public offering. The IPO comes during a surge of interest in collectibles, with everything from art to sneakers to sports cards skyrocketing in value. A LeBron James rookie card sold for a record $5.2 million earlier this week. And the explosion of digital certificates for art and collectibles known as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, has been grabbing headlines. The rush has been triggered in part by central bank policy, which Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated Wednesday was not changing any time soon. With interest rates at rock bottom, investors are looking for ever more creative places to park their cash. “People are trying to get protection from the debasement of their dollars,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Advisory Group. “They want to be in things with limited supply and that have the perception of value in the eyes of many.” Up next Altria (MO), Carlyle Group (CG), Caterpillar (CAT), Comcast (CCZ), Domino’s Pizza (DMPZF), Hershey Foods (HSY), Kraft Heinz (KHC), Mastercard (MA), McDonald’s (MCD), Merck (MKGAF) and Molson Coors (TAP) report results before US markets open. Amazon (AMZN), Twitter (TWTR) and US Steel (X) follow after the close. Also today: The first look at US gross domestic product for the first three months of the year posts at 8:30 a.m. ET, along with initial unemployment claims for last week. Coming tomorrow: Chevron (CVX) and ExxonMobil (XOM) close out a big week of earnings from oil producers. 1.5 Billion Int. Tourist Arrivals in 2019; UNWTO Forecasts 4% Increase in 2020
The UNWTO has reported that in 2019 there were 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals globally, the tenth consecutive year of growth. The total equates to a 4% increase on 2018, which is also the forecast increase for this year. All regions saw a rise in international arrivals in 2019. However, uncertainty surrounding Brexit, the collapse of Thomas Cook, geopolitical and social tensions and the global economic slowdown all contributed to a slower growth in 2019, when compared to the exceptional rates of 2017 and 2018. This slowdown affected mainly advanced economies and particularly Europe and Asia and the Pacific.
Looking ahead, growth of 3% to 4% is predicted for 2020, an outlook reflected in the latest UNWTO Confidence Index which shows a cautious optimism: 47% of participants believe tourism will perform better and 43% at the same level of 2019. Major sporting events, including the Tokyo Olympics, and cultural events such as Expo 2020 Dubai are expected to have a positive impact on the sector. Presenting the results, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stressed that “in these times of uncertainty and volatility, tourism remains a reliable economic sector.” Against the backdrop of recently downgraded global economic perspectives, international trade tensions, social unrest and geopolitical uncertainty, “our sector keeps outpacing the world economy and calling upon us to not only grow but to grow better,” he added. Given tourism’s position as a top export sector and creator of employment, UNWTO advocates the need for responsible growth. Tourism has, therefore, a place at the heart of global development policies, and the opportunity to gain further political recognition and make a real impact as the Decade of Action gets underway, leaving just ten years to fulfill the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Growth The Middle East has emerged as the fastest-growing region for international tourism arrivals in 2019, growing at almost double the global average (+8%). Growth in Asia and the Pacific slowed down but still showed above-average growth, with international arrivals up 5%. Europe, where growth was also slower than in previous years (+4%), continues to lead in terms of international arrivals numbers, welcoming 743 million international tourists last year (51% of the global market). The Americas (+2%) showed a mixed picture as many island destinations in the Caribbean consolidated their recovery after the 2017 hurricanes while arrivals fell in South America due partly to ongoing social and political turmoil.
Limited data available for Africa (+4%) points to continued strong results in North Africa (+9%) while arrivals in Sub-Saharan Africa grew slower in 2019 (+1.5%). Tourism Spending Against a backdrop of global economic slowdown, tourism spending continued to grow, most notably among the world’s top ten spenders. France reported the strongest increase in international tourism expenditure among the world’s top ten outbound markets (+11%), while the United States (+6%) led growth in absolute terms, aided by a strong dollar. However, some large emerging markets such as Brazil and Saudi Arabia reported declines in tourism spending. China, the world’s top source market saw outbound trips increase by 14% in the first half of 2019, though expenditure fell 4%. “The number of destinations earning US$1 billion or more from international tourism has almost doubled since 1998,” said Mr Pololikashvili. “The challenge we face is to make sure the benefits are shared as widely as possible and that nobody is left behind. In 2020, UNWTO celebrates the Year of Tourism and Rural Development, and we hope to see our sector lead positive change in rural communities, creating jobs and opportunities, driving economic growth and preserving culture.” See also: Did Strength of Thai Baht Affect Number of Visitor Arrivals from UK in 2019? Valve Index, Masters of the Universe & Crew Dragon
The Nerds are back, proving that 107 episodes just isn't too much for the human body to handle.
This week, the Professor has a complaint about that saintly game developer, Valve. What's his problem with Gabe and the multi award winning game studio? They're sold out of VR headsets with only a month to go before the release of Half Life: Alyx.
The Masters of the Universe are coming back as well. The Professor has another complaint, this time about the casting of Skeletor. He thinks it's ridiculous to bring back Skeletor's original voice in a different role and cast a new actor for Skeletor. Even if that actor is the esteemed Mark Hamill. DJ thinks this sacrilege is 100% ok. The star studded cast list has the Nerds highly excited for this revival.
Now that Dragon has been human rated, SpaceX have moved the capsule to the launch pad, and the crew are a pair of former Shuttle pilots. This will be the first manned space mission from the US since the Shuttle program was shut down. America Can Into Space? Soon, hopefully.
Professor and DJ have some trouble pronouncing American Indian and Finnish words in the Remembrances and Shoutouts, and laugh at the Boomers who couldn't believe Bill and Ted actually speak like that.
Stay hydrated and come hang out with us again next week.

Remembrances
17 February 1909 – Geronimo - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geronimo
Prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands — the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi — to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886, he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. Reservation life was confining to the free-moving Apache people, and they resented restrictions on their customary way of life. He was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led large numbers of men beyond his own following. At any one time, he would be in command of about 30 to 50 Apaches. He died from pneumonia at the age of 79 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
17 February 2017 – Alan Aldridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Aldridge
British artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He is best known for his psychedelic artwork made for books and record covers by The Beatles and The Who. He designed a series of science fiction book covers for Penguin Books. He made a big impression with his illustrations for The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book. He also provided illustrations for The Penguin Book of Comics, a history of British and American comic art. His work was characterised by a flowing, cartoony style and soft airbrushing – very much in step with the psychedelic styles of the times. His work includes the 1971 anti-war poster entitled A great place for hamburgers but who'd want to live there! Aldridge also created the artwork for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John in 1975. He also the creator of the Hard Rock Café logo. He died at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, California.
18 February 2019 – Toni Myers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_Myers
Canadian film editor, writer, director, and producer, best known for her 3D IMAX work. Ms. Myers’s half-century in filmmaking included credits as writer, producer, narrator and editor as well as director. Much of that work involved documentaries that made use of Imax technology, which, with a bigger screen and enhanced sound, creates a more vivid viewing experience than a conventional movie offers. Ms. Myers directed three feature-length Imax films: “Space Station 3D” (2002), about the construction and occupation of the International Space Station; “Hubble 3D” (2010), which documented a 2009 shuttle flight to repair the Hubble telescope; and “A Beautiful Planet” (2016), which concentrated on images of Earth shot from space. All had marquee narrators — Tom Cruise for the first, Leonardo DiCaprio for the second, Jennifer Lawrence for the last. She explained in a 2010 interview with The Gazette of Montreal, “The sun rises and sets every 90 minutes in space, which means there wasn’t much time to capture the shots we asked them to get,”. She also said “There was no time or room to say: ‘Could you move to the right? It would make a better shot,’”. She died from cancer at the age of 76 in Toronto.

He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong,New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889), "The Man from Snowy River" (1890) and "Waltzing Matilda" (1895), regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem. He was born in "Narrambla", near Orange, New South Wales.

Humphries' characters have brought him international renown, and he also appeared in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows. Originally conceived as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who caricatured Australian suburban complacency and insularity, Dame Edna Everage has evolved over four decades to become a satire of stardom – a gaudily dressed, acid-tongued, egomaniacal, internationally fêted Housewife "Gigastar". He was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria.

17 February 1864 – H.L Hunley sunk a ship
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_USS_Housatonic
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._L._Hunley_(submarine)#Attack_on_Housatonic
H.L. Hunley or Hunley made her only attack against an enemy target on the night of February 17, 1864. The target was the USS Housatonic, a 1,240 long tons (1,260 t) wooden-hulled steam-powered sloop-of-war with 12 large cannons, which was stationed at the entrance to Charleston, about 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) offshore. Desperate to break the naval blockade of the city, Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers successfully attacked Housatonic, ramming Hunley's only spar torpedo against the enemy's hull. The torpedo was detonated, sending Housatonic to the bottom in five minutes, along with five of her crewmen. Hunley did not survive the attack and sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost. The Sinking of USS Housatonic on 17 February 1864 during the American Civil War was an important turning point in naval warfare. H.L. Hunley became renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel in combat, and was the direct progenitor of what would eventually become international submarine warfare, although the victory was Pyrrhic and short-lived, since the submarine did not survive the attack and was lost with all eight Confederate crewmen.
17 February 1984 – Krull makes its way into theatres in Finland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krull_(film)
The film was released under Krull ja näkymätön vihollinen or Krull and the invisible enemy. Directed by Peter Yates, the feature starred Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com: "A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet." Krull underwent a very expensive, harsh, and dangerous production process. The film's huge budget ballooned, mainly due to the designers having to make numerous alterations to the sets corresponding to the heavily evolving script. The film was a commercial failure upon release, and critical opinion has been mixed, both upon release and in retrospect. Numerous reviewers have highlighted its visual effects and soundtrack, while several critics have criticized its plot as being derivative and nonsensical. The film has gone on to achieve cult film status.
17 February 1989 – Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure came into theatres. -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Ted%27s_Excellent_Adventure#Release
The flick premiered on this day in 1989, and it still enjoys a cult audience today ... so much so that a third installment is said to be in-the-works. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure received generally positive reviews, and was a success at the box office, grossing $40.5 million against a $6.5 million budget. The picture had been planned for a 1988 release, and filming and production had completed on schedule. However, the original film distributor, DEG, fell into significant debt in late 1987, and by 1988 had filed for bankruptcy. At this point, the film was in post-production, and the director Stephen Henek attempted to show around the rough cut to other distributors. Henek said many of these companies were confused, asking him "Are there kids that really speak like this?" on seeing the film. However, the cut had an extremely popular reaction from a test audience of volunteers pulled from local malls, which led to a small bidding war from production companies to get the title.

18 Cool Cars from the Martin Auto Museum
The Martin Auto Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, is the car-museum equivalent of your favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Located in a nondescript industrial building in the shadow of Interstate 17, the museum’s eclectic collection is a treat for car buffs of all stripes.
Most of the cars on display are models we’ve seen before, but the diversity of the collection had us grinning from ear to ear, and the $10 suggested donation for admission is a bargain. Approximately 67 of Mel Martin’s hundred-plus cars are on display, and most of them are in operable condition. Here are some of our favorites.
1992 Lister Corvette One of the first cars you’ll see as you enter the museum is this ultra-rare Lister Corvette. No one seems to be quite sure how many C4s were modified by Lister Cars in England—estimates range from two to five—and even Mel Martin himself didn’t realize how rare this car was when he bought it for his son to use as a daily driver. Along with the unique body panels, the car features an LT1 V-8 stroked to 383 cubic inches and supercharged for 500 horsepower.
1965 Shelby AC Cobra Sure, you’ve seen 427 Cobras before—but how about one with six original miles on the odometer? Nope, that’s not a typo. Six. If you use the national average of 12,000 miles per year, the fifty-three-year-old Cobra has done just 0.0000095% of the average.
1967 Corvette Cutaway Mel wanted to add a factory-produced Corvette cutaway to his collection, but the asking prices were high, so he had one made for him. A 1967 Corvette convertible serves as the basis, and we were assured that no rare or valuable Corvettes were harmed in the making of this cutaway.
1910 Maxwell Though scarcely remembered today, there was a time when Maxwell rivaled Ford and GM as one of America’s major automaker. Its life was short; founded in 1904, Maxwell was taken over by Chrysler in the early 20s and eliminated in 1925. Radio comedian Jack Benny’s miserly radio character drove an ever-ailing Maxwell, memorably voiced by Mel Blanc, which extended the car’s notoriety into the 1950s.
2004 Cadillac CTS-V Development Mule This is a production mule used to develop both the ’04 CTS-V race car and the ’09 CTS-V, and it was raced in several SCCA events by John Heinriciy. While contemporary CTS-Vs had a 400-hp small-block V-8, this one had a 600 hp supercharged version that would form the blueprint for the 640-hp 2nd-gen CTS-V. Most mules are sent straight to the crusher, but this car was spared, sent to the GM Heritage Fleet and from there to the auction block—and that’s where Mel Martin picked it up. The bad news: It can never be registered.
1978 Chevrolet Corvette Pace Car Chevrolet built just over 6,500 replicas to celebrate the Corvette pacing the Indianapolis 500 in 1978, and this has to be one of the most rare—an honest-to-goodness barn find from Detroit, Michigan, with just 15 miles on the odometer. Where are the OFFICIAL PACE CAR stickers, you may ask? They’re in a plastic bin inside the trunk—the same place they’ve been since the car left the dealership forty years ago.
1915 Model Ts With 15 million built, it’s no surprise to see a Model T in a museum, but Martin’s three examples show us the true breadth of the most historically significant of cars. Along with a 1915 convertible, modified with an electric starter (which explains the luggage rack on the running board; the battery was in the trunk), the collection includes a heavily-modified speedster and a depot hack, forerunner of today’s SUV.
1915 Model T Speedster Here’s another look at the Model T speedster. Your author has driven a stock Model T at 15 mph and it scared the daylights out of him. Anyone who races one is certifiable. This one’s been raced.
1990 NASCAR Ford Thunderbird When Jeff Gordon started racing full-time in the Busch Grand National series, he did it in this very Thunderbird. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1991 and took this car to the pole position 11 times in 1992, a NASCAR record.
Atlas Diagnostic Engine Analyzer The Martin has an impressive collection of old diagnostic equipment. This working Atlas AMA-800 is one of several such machines on display. Note the Sun distributor tester at bottom left.
1917 Douglas This 101-year-old dump truck was the first vehicle ever owned by museum founder Mel Martin, a gift from his uncle after it was retired from the uncle’s onyx mine in Mayer, Arizona, where Martin grew up. The truck is powered by a 60-horse Buda engine and features solid rubber tires which appear to be original, though after a century of use, they are starting to look a little ratty.
1933 Buick Series 90 Limousine This Buick limo was originally owned by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. It features custom coachwork and a black-satin interior. Power comes from Buick’s legendary OHV straight eight.
1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo As emissions regulations dialed back the potential for hot-rodding new cars, dealer-customized body work became A Thing, and this ’75 Monte Carlo is a perfect example. Originally customized by a dealer in Florida, it features customized fenders with a Rolls Royce grille and taillights. With just 1,900 miles on the clock and a near-perfect interior, this car is a time machine. Mel Martin once drove the car home for the night, and his wife threatened to divorce him if he ever showed up in something so ugly.
2007 Jeep Wrangler Not all of the cars at the Martin Auto Museum are old. This 2007 Jeep Wrangler was built by BRP Auto Designs as a SEMA show car. This one might be a bit too much of a mis-fit, however; it’s currently up for sale.
1963 Chevrolet Bel Air 409 Mel Martin started out as a Chevrolet collector, and there are some primo Bow Ties in his collection. Check out this super-clean 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air 409, unadorned red with dog-dish hubcaps. She’s real fine, this 409.
1955 Chevrolets More Chevy goodness: A 28,000 mile original Del Ray sits next to a heavily modified Nomad. The Museum also has a nice collection of 1950s auto-related memorabilia, including a diner set, a couple of jukeboxs, and the “OK Used Cars” neon sign on the wall above the Nomad.
2000 Pontiac Bonneville What better car to run at Bonneville than a Bonneville? Mike Cook built this street-legal 2000 Bonnie, modifying the supercharged 3.8 liter V-6 to produce over 600 horsepower. The Spirit of Bonneville made a record-setting run, averaging 202.5 mph on its last mile with an exit speed over 204 mph.
International-Harvester Farmall tractors Did we mention that the collection at the Martin Auto Museum is eclectic? In one of the corners, tucked behind a Crosley coupe and a heavily-modified Canadian-market Mercury (!) F-100 pickup, you’ll find a pair of 1950s-era International Harvester Farmall tractors.
Carousel Sure, you expect to see cars at a car museum—but what about a carousel? The story goes that Mel Martin got kicked off a carousel at the age of 12, and swore to the operator that someday he’d own his own. This (relatively) small merry-go-round dates from 1973.

Daniele Polito Joins Four Seasons Seoul as Boccalino’s Chef de Cuisine
The Four Seasons Hotel Seoul has appointed Daniele Polito as Chef de Cuisine at the hotel’s stylish Italian restaurant, Boccalino.
A seasoned chef with 20 years of industry experience, Daniele began his career in his hometown of Norcia, in the province of Perugia, before moving to the north of Italy to Varese and Verona where he worked in Michelin-star restaurants. Deniele's love for cooking comes from watching his grandparents cook farm-to-table for the family every weekend. Those early days inspired his own modern style based on those home-cooked Italian dishes. “I want our guests to leave happy, the tastes to be the same through all bites and the presentations as enjoyable for the eyes as for the mouth. The presentation will reflect the style of the restaurant – simple, colourful and almost playful, like the ingredients are in motion on the plate," Daniele said.
