Steam Controller - Thoughts
Splurged on the thingy on eBay a while back, been messing with it for a few days, now.
I can see the appeal, especially for anything that isn't a typical third or first-person game, or anything that qualifies as your typical Controller Fare. Swapping the right joystick with a trackpad is a bold move that makes menuing or engaging with games that don't have native gamepad support a breeze, but it also makes everything else harder. Forget trying to perform snap-turns or quick aim corrections in a shooter; what feels like a small surface when you're looking at it feels like the mother of all trackpads, when your eyes are on the screen. If you're a fan of punchier titles, you definitely have to bring your tracking sensitivity all the way down.
Or, well, it's either that, or you spend weeks coaching yourself to replace the thumb sweeps you'd perform on a joystick with tiny little flicks across the textured surface. It's a very fiddly device that's almost nothing without Steam's provided software companion - and especially without Steam Input. If it weren't for Valve's pie-in-the-sky project to universalize controller inputs, the very idea of tackling something like a Civilization game with a gamepad would feel like pure insanity.
In a lot of ways, it's like I gave myself a precision multitool and now have to calibrate it for every single use case I run into, as opposed to Sony's very one-size-fits-all approach to game controllers. Or, if you'd like me to sound even more pedantic, I could say the Steam Controller is the Linux of game controllers.
Oh, and kudos to Valve for designing a controller dongle of respectable size, for once. It's about the size of one of the smaller USB stick formats on the market and just a little thicker.

The Steam Controller is easily the best and most comfortable controller I’ve ever used and nobody can do anything to change my mind

Most controllers are pretty basic. (Use one and you've used them all.) The Horipad for Steam seems determined to be anything but basic with every piece of input on it diverging from norms in the most quirky ways possible.

My trash gamer opinion is that I actually think the Steam Controller was a really cool idea and couldve benefited from more refinement but since it was made by Valve there was no way this would happen I mean I guess they kinda did that with the Steam Deck but its not the same. Sure trackpads have their issues but they dont wear down in the same way analog sticks do. Like I'm always thinking about how so many games have us constantly holding a direction with the stick and the wear that causes over time as opposed to a trackpad where you just hold your thumb over a spot and theres no elastic or springs to wear out or dislocate.

I really like my Steam Controller, but I picked this up while traveling and decided to give it a go while playing Monster Hunter: Rise last night. I think my biggest pain so far is switching from an Xbox style button layout to the Switch style layout.
We'll see if I keep using it regularly, or if it gets relegated to use by player 2 for things like Jamestown...
I could just use it with the switch too...

A small content update for Slay the Princess just went live — The Voice of the Skeptic now accompanies you on the Deconstructed side of Happily Ever After instead of Voice of the Paranoid.
I’m not sure why I originally settled on Paranoid for that branch of the story. Maybe it was because Skeptic already felt overrepresented in The Pristine Cut between his presence in the Den, and his major role in The Cage split across three routes. The Cage in particular was a very emotionally taxing chapter to work on, so maybe I was tired of writing him.
But post release, it’s felt like:
Paranoid’s in HEA was just kind of there. At least, none of the things he does in the chapter felt important for his character.
Every voice gets an opportunity to truly shine somewhere except Skeptic. In fact, to push players to the cage, we wound up taking away one of his weirdest moments to shine from the base game (pushing you to take The Prisoner’s head with you.) Localizing the game means that redoing any dialogue is very burdensome, since I’d have to have it retranslated in all 12 of our supported languages, but upon looking more closely at the script for Happily Ever After, I realized that all but one or two lines felt more like they belonged to skeptic rather than the paranoid anyways.
And that when given to the skeptic, those lines don’t feel like he’s just kind of there the way it felt like Paranoid was just kind of there. The small wins Paranoid can get in that chapter — deducing the identity of the shadow; pushing you to blow out the torches — they’re big wins for the Skeptic, and the route seemed like it would be much more rounded if he was swapped in.
And beyond that, I couldn’t get the following line from the Shifting Mound’s monologue about the Deconstructed Damsel out of my head:
“Love melted into skepticism, and you pulled back layer after layer after layer until all you were left with was the knowledge that you did not know me.”
We couldn’t just use the word skepticism to describe the route’s entry point and not include our lil’ over-analytical guy. So we took some time this month to re-record those lines with Jonny and make the changes to the game, and now that itching need to fix “just one more thing” is finally gone.
This is probably the final content update for Slay the Princess (though, never say never I suppose.) Ever since we started work on The Pristine Cut, I wanted to end my work on the game with the conclusion of Happily Ever After. I’m grateful for the opportunity for that to finally be the case.
I hope to see you all tomorrow with Scarlet Hollow’s relaunch, but even if I don’t see you there, thank you all for the life-changing support you’ve given us. I hope our game means as much to you as it means to us.
All the best, Tony

My thought process as I played through Control for the first time after getting into Alan Wake II
Btw this is not me bashing on any ships- tbh they’re both good in my opinion - I just thought it was funny how I thought I immediately clocked Darling and Trench (which- if we’re going by Ao3 statistics I did), got blindsided by Darling and Zane, and then immediately understood why they were on the top of the tag after watching them interact for literally 1 minute 💀💀💀

The fact that Purse, out of all possible characters, was one of the characters to get removed from the post-2018 versions is something that confuses me greatly.
BV's entire thing is that he does dirty deeds done expensive. The only moment I remember him being on stage and not talking about money (or committing crimes for it) was during One Rock N' Roll Too Many. He literally asks Elektra for TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. Which was thirty thousand at first. Slick also being really into money. Control (he isn't a train but he's included) saying that Pearl cost him three weeks worth of pocket money. The Rockies tell Rusty to stop dreaming about "money and fame" (that might be just a German thing but they could have changed that), Dustin saying that freight is great because profit...
I just think that Purse would be essential, especially when money is a relevant and reoccurring topic. I am not one bit biased about this
