Chapter 7: the lie

Summary:

Suffering is not a word he has learnt through osmosis or the dictionary function of his holobooks. Suffering is a word he already knows, already knew. It is—old—not old, precisely, but it is more known and familiar than his own name, and the knowledge of it has existed within him long before he started running towards the wall and the safe. Suffering infuses every moment and molecule of his being, inextricable. He does not think that there could be a Cody without suffering.
