Sif considers Sigyn a close best friend and almost like a sister. There is a mutual understanding between the both of them. They talk to each other about their respective crushes on the princes of Asgard and also train together. Sif helps teach Sigyn some basic combat moves and how to better defend herself.

Myth!Loki's Hair Color: Common Depictions
Because the AI user that just annoyed me also claimed myth!Loki's canonical hair color is blonde and that's why they did that crappy blonde MCU!Loki AI art, and I am feeling spiteful cus fuck AI and that eyesore, and I need to wash that off my brain.
AND I KNOW this claim came from those people that interact with THAT ONE VERY obnoxious Sigyn stan that pretends to be a Norse mythology expert despite never providing proper citations or citing modern myth re-tellings and whines about children's story books not being accurate. Ask her to cite her claims and actually look at the sources, for the love of Loki!
LOKI HAS NO KNOWN HAIR COLOR IN THE MYTHS! THERE's NO SOURCE FOR THAT! Loki's also a shape-shifter! Loki can have their hair look like whatever the fuck they want. To my knowledge, the only gods that have confirmed hair colors are myth!Thor, who is said to a red-head, and myth!Sif being a blonde who gets a wig of magical gold to substitute her chorn hair. There's also a description of myth!Heimdall who is said to be the "whitest" god, implying blonde/white hair? Loki's only mentioned to be pretty, assumed to be Aesir -sized rather than gigantic, likely smaller than myth!Thor because myth!Thor can kick his ass and he can hold onto Thor's belt when crossing a river (Skáldskaparmál), and have scars on his lips due to them being sown shut.
Tumblr media
Also from Gylfanning: "Loki is beautiful and comely to look upon, evil in spirit., very fickle in habit. He surpassed other men in that wisdom which is called 'sleight,' and had artifices for all occasions; he would ever bring the Æsir into great hardships, and then get them out with crafty counsel."
There's also the Snaptun stone, believed to be Loki due to the scarred lips, giving him a mustache.
The most common and widespread hair color depictions of Loki have red/ginger/orangey hair due to Loki mistakenly being thought to associated with fire because their name's too similar to the fire personification Jotun's name, Logi, because Richard Wagner fucked up in his Ring Cycle Operas and combined the two of them into "Loge". Arthur Rackham's illustrations based on Wagner's Ring Cycle are possibly the most influential in that regard because they're fucking awesome. Even GOW made their Loki depiction a red-head.
Tumblr media
And here's a painting that looks like a ginger to me by James Doyle Penrose (1912):
The second most common hair color depiction is black hair, probably thanks to Marvel as it's most prevalent in modern depictions (e.g. Alan Cumming's Loki in "Son of the Mask", whom I fucking love).
Tumblr media
There's also the Valhalla comics that started in 1979 (after Marvel, but I don't think that contributed AT ALL because Vallhala comics are way more myth-accurate and fucking awesome. I am just including it here because it's a black-haired Loki depiction).
Tumblr media
There's also Eric M. Esquivel's Ragnarok n' Roll (have not read and I am not inclined to do so, but it kept showing up in my loki searches 10+ years ago and its existence was archived in my brain due to that). Is it me or does he looks like Cantinflas because of the mustache?
Tumblr media
This is Cantinflas btw
Tumblr media
There's also Jul I Valhall Loke (Thanks Scandinavian Twitter users for showing me this gem even if I can't understand the language. I am forever grateful.)
youtube
And surprisingly, Marvel was not the first to give him black hair. Marten Eskil Winge portrayed Loki with black hair in his 1863 painting "Loki and Sigyn."
Neil Gaiman has depicted Loki with a variety of hair colors, USUALLY as a literally "fiery" red-head (Sandman comics & American Gods book), whatever Johnathan Tucker's hair color is in the American Gods TV show, and black-haired (Norse Mythology graphic novel).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a brown-haired Loki depiction in Assassin's Creed (I have not played it btw).
Tumblr media
And sometimes he's just some demonic thing with horns:

Hi, Puck! What are your plans for your Love, Duty, and Glorious Purpose story now that Thor: Love and Thunder is out? 🤩
Thanks for the ask! Probably the first thing I plan to do is see the movie. ^_^;
As an overview, my summer job has been keeping me really busy. I was going to do an update post about the lack of progress on WIPs and how I'm still accepting asks and prompts, but I haven't even had the time to do that properly!
Speaking of, Sigyn and Loki are gonna be in Multiverse of Madness as well! I'm still working out their parts-- definitely in the fight at Kamar Taj, definitely ribbing Stephen about how he's not the Sorcerer Supreme anymore. I've also got a few ideas about how Loki and Sigyn are going to interact with the Multiverse, and then there's explaining away how Sigyn managed to lose her influence over Wanda. That's going to take some character work and worldbuilding that the movie didn't really flesh out in the way it probably should have.
However, if the Disney+ turnaround is as quick on Love and Thunder as it was on Multiverse of Madness, I should be able to see the new Thor soon when it comes to streaming.
That being said, I'm also not exactly one to avoid spoilers. (Spoilers under the cut.)
So, what is it I'm hearing about a Heimdallson????
So, yeah, Axl Rose Heimdallson is probably going to not be Sigyn's really young brother that she's just never mentioned before. I can't exactly make him a bastard he didn't know about either, because how would he not know? But from what I understand, he's there to be a kid character that the audience cares about. I think I've got one of those. I won't cut the character entirely, but he's going to have a different backstory. Probably not unlike what I did with Sylvie, only less dramatic.
Given that one of the characters is called "Gorr the God Killer" I'm expecting that death is a major theme. Which is great, because death is a major theme in LDGP! But from what I understand, it hinges on whether or not there's an afterlife, which I think could be interesting to play with, considering Sigyn's gotten multiple visions of people reaching out to her from the afterlife. I think I know what I want to do with it, but I need to see the movie first to see Gorr's character arc in regards to that.
Sounds like I'm going to be giving Sif and Bruni a bunch to do! I'm honestly glad-- I feel like of the Asgardians, I tend towards putting Fandral into situations (just cause I like Errol Flynn-type characters, and I find writing them really easy), and so it will be nice to bring out some others. Might throw in Hogun and Volstagg (my other neglected Asgardians) as well.
I think I'll want something for Rindr to do. Lord Freyr might make an appearance as well, and I really liked writing Theoric, so he might come back. It'll depend on cast size. Nari the Elder will probably not be featured. Sylvie definitely won't, I need Loki season 2 before I do more with her.
Jane's back! Gotta fix it around the breakup, but I'm excited for The Mighty Thor to finally make her debut. As for the end... I mean, I know I've said that I don't like unnecessary character deaths. I need to watch the movie, but it doesn't sound like Jane's was one of them. The Warriors Three, yes, Classic Loki, yes, but Jane? I'm not seeing that as a fridge moment as much. On the other hand, I kinda fridged Heimdall, so... But again, I haven't seen the movie yet.
And speaking of fridging, the super spoiler character. I have no idea what I'm doing with her. But I guess this is what I get for trying to look into the MCU's future.
I feel like I'm forgetting something... Oh, yeah.
The sun will shine again.

Sigyn Notes: Thor
Tumblr media
This is just a rough outline of what I have planned for Sigyn during the course of the first Thor movie.  Consider this the writer version of a pencil sketch before the final product.  I want to start normalizing this for fic writers.  Let me know if you’d like to see more outlines like this!
Background: Sigyn is already married to Loki before the start of the movie.  Established that they’ve been married for some time, but don’t have any kids.
Scene between her and Loki before the coronation where Loki expresses his doubts of Thor becoming king, Sigyn expresses them as well, but tries to assure him all will be well
“Who ever said I was wise?” Loki smiled, but it faded as he quietly took Sigyn’s other hand in his.
“Do you think he will make a good king?”  he asked, occupying himself with their intertwined fingers.
She didn’t speak for a moment looking down as well.
“I think that Thor still has a lot to learn when it comes to being King,” she said, carefully. He can be arrogant and has penchant to show off, not mention his needs to learn how to heed advice.”
Loki nodded his head as she spoke, agreeing wholeheartedly with her words.
“That being said,” she continued, “I would say the same of you. “
Loki looked up at her with creased brows.
“Is that so?”
“Yes,” she said looking him in the eye.  “You’re clever Loki, extraordinarily so.  The problem is you know it, and you let it get to your head.  When your ego is bruised you try everything in you power to rectify it, by playing tricks.  And Odin knows you need to listen to me more often than you do.”
Loki’s face remained neutral, but Sigyn could tell he was at least a little insulted by her words.  She placed a gentle hand on his cheek.
“But I still think you would make a great king.  You would grow into your role, as will Thor now.  Your father is still alive to guide him.  And you are much too clever to allow him to do anything too reckless.”
Loki allowed a small smile to escape his lips.
“Sometimes I wish you weren’t sensible.”
“One of us has to be.”
Dresses in Loki’s colors during Thor’s crowing and stands by his side
Frost Giants attack during the crowning
Destroyer kills the frost giants
Loki goes with Thor and Odin to the vault, Sigyn stays behind with Frigga and Sif
She and Frigga have a brief conversation about how the Frost giants could have gotten in while Sif and the Warriors three consult each other
Sigyn and Frigga both come to the conclusion of some sort of illusion, as they don’t see how Heimdall could have missed it, but they give it no further thought than that
Sigyn assists Frigga in appeasing and reassuring the guest as everyone leaves
Sigyn catches Loki as he’s about to leave with Thor
They have a brief interaction as he leaves in which she tells him to be careful
“I believe you said it would be my duty to stop him from doing anything too reckless,” Loki said, lightly.
“Yes, “stop” being the key word.”
“Fear not, Lady Sigyn,” Fandral assured, lazy draping and arm over Loki’s shoulders.  “We shall return, and with your husband all in one piece.”
Before they’re about to leave, Loki leans down as if to kiss her goodbye. He then instructs her to tell Odin where they are going; Sigyn nods in understanding and as soon as they’re out of sight, she runs to tell the All Father exactly what is happening
Sigyn meets Sif and the Warriors 3 when they return; they explain everything and Sigyn feels instant guilt of not getting to Odin sooner
She assist in healing Fandral and Volstagg (establishes her magical abilities)
Soon enough Loki returns with just Odin and the All Father tells them Thor has been banished
Sigyn is in shock at the news, but does not question the decision as she trusts Odin to know what is best for the kingdom and his son, still she goes to Loki to check to see if he’s alright
Loki is noticeably distracted and avoids her questions
She tries again when he storms out after the fight with the Warriors Three, but still Loki refuses to even looks at her, fully pulling away from her touch as if it burns him
Sigyn asks him if it’s because she didn’t tell Odin earlier that he blames her for Thor’s banishment; Loki assures her it’s not her fault, but still won’t give her an answer to why he’s avoiding her
She is in their room when Loki comes in to tell her that Odin has fallen into the Odin sleep
Sigyn comforts him and Loki breaks down telling her he needs to show her something
He takes her back down to the vault and shows her his true form, telling her everything that Odin had told him; he tells her then, he would not blame her if she left a monster like him
Sigyn assures him otherwise, stating that she doesn't care, he is still the man she agreed to marry all those years ago and still loves him now
Sigyn remained silent, taking the time to full examine every inch of his blue skin, lingering on the distinctive lines, tracing them upwards until she met his red eyes.
Loki wanted to turn away from her.  He could not bare the thought of seeing disgust when he so often found love in her gaze.  But, he needed her to see.  He needed to be honest with her, even if he so often lied to everybody else. She deserved that.
Slowly, she step forward.  Her hand reached out.  Ever so gently found it came to rest against his cheek.  His skin burned under her touch.  The urge to pull away clashed with his instinct to keep her there beside him.
The corner of her lip turned up into a tired smile. “Is that all?”
She tries to assist Frigga while Loki talks with Sif and Warriors 3
Sif goes to Sigyn to get her to talk to Loki
Sigyn expresses her own suspicions of Loki once Sif brings their interaction to light
She and Loki have a conversation about Loki now being King and her Queen: Sigyn expresses her own doubts of being a Queen and how she never expected or necessarily wanted to be Queen
“It’s an honor I never expected,” she said, quietly.  “And, if I may be honest, not one I ever truly wanted.”
“You married a prince of Asgard, surely you knew it was a possibility,” Loki said, trying and failing to keep the defensiveness out of his tone.
“Only if a number of tragedies occurred, as they have.  I will learn to do my duty and make you a good Queen, but I do mourn the loss of what our life was.”
“It’s only because you do not see what our life could be.”
Sigyn starts to realize the extent of Loki’s ambition as she questions him and brings up her and Sif’s conversation
Loki tells Thor Odin is dead and goes to Jotunheim
Sigyn goes to Sif and the Warriors 3 with her suspicions of Loki, Heimdall summons them and Sigyn promises to stay behind and cover for them
She still doesn’t fully believe Loki is capable of betraying Thor like that
Thor returns and Sigyn is confronted with the reality of the truth
While Thor and Loki are fighting, Sigyn tries to use her magic to unfreeze the Bifrost, she ends up having to fight Loki as a result
The fight between her and Loki is brief, but in Loki’s eyes Sigyn has fully betrayed him while Sigyn simply want him to stop
Loki ends up knocking her out, leaving her out of the fight until the Bi-Frost explodes and he lets go
Sigyn is left to grieve the death of her husband while Loki plans his revenge

The Golden Apple
TITLE: The Golden Apple
CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: Chapter 4
Chapter 1  Chapter 2  Chapter 3
AO3 Link
AUTHOR: traveling-classicist
ORIGINAL IMAGINE: A Midgardian raised on Asgard.
Something, that no mortal deemed possible.
You were taken in, by the King and Queen of Asgard, as an infant.
But, you never imagined you would live out your days here…
RATING: General
NOTES/WARNINGS: I’m really sorry with how slowly I’m getting these chapters out. I admire those authors who can turn out chapters every single day but I’m just not a fast enough writer to do so. I did work really hard on this chapter which is in part why it took so long. I would greatly appreciate it if you could leave a comment telling me if you’re still interested in my fic, what you like, and what you would like to see from my writing (please, do be nice and constructive).
If you’ve been reading from the beginning, thank you so much and I’m glad you are still interested. If you’re just starting, welcome! Please click the links to the previous chapters, have a look at the beautiful masterlists on this blog, or check out my AO3 to read the full fic.
ALSO NOTE: I tried to do some ‘fancy’ formatting with Sigyn’s thoughts in this chapter but Tumblr is not sophisticated enough to show it. I wanted to play around with the formatting to see if it enhances the reading experience. I’m pretty sure you can see the formatting just fine on AO3, if you’re interested. Let me know in the comments if it’s something you like or something I can do without.
————————————————————————————————–
“Loki,” Frigga called to her son. “It’s a nice day. Why don’t you go out to the courtyard and play with your brother?”
Loki looked up happily at his mother from the floor of his room. Thor had gone out before sunrise, leaving Loki by himself. Frigga joined him on the floor, caressing his cheek.
“Mother! Mother! You have to see what I can do! Watch! Watch!” he exclaimed.
He scrunched up his face and clenched his little fists as tight as he could. He muttered the runes under his breath, concentrating hard. A flash of green shown around him and he transformed into a little black mouse. The mouse scurried towards Frigga and leapt onto her lap. She held out her hand and the mouse stepped on as she lifted him closer to her face. The little mouse posed, showing off his sleek looks.
“Oh, look at you!” she gasped, admiring Loki’s attention to detail in his transformation. “You look stunning.” She set him down again. Another flash of green and Loki returned to his natural form.
“What do you think?” he asked eagerly. His green eyes sparkled.
“That was a marvellous transformation, Loki! Soon you will be able to transform into bigger creatures and hold the spell for much longer. You just have to keep practising,” she said.
“I’ve been practising for hours! When do you think I can turn into something bigger? I want to transform into a big, strong horse! Or maybe a bilgesnipe! Oh no, I know! A dragon!” he exclaimed, spreading his arms like wings and running circles around his mother.
“Slow down, slow down!” Frigga urged him, giggling at his eagerness. “You have to start small with these things.” Loki plopped down on the floor again, frowning and folding his arms.
“But I want to do transformations like you do,” he said.
“And you will, Loki, in time. One day you will be Asgard’s greatest sorcerer. A master of magic! But everyone has to start somewhere. When I was your age, I could barely hold the form of an ant, let alone a mouse! You are doing splendidly.”
“Do you really think I could be that good? As good as you?”
“Maybe even better,” she said, hugging him. “Now, go out and play with your brother in the courtyard. You need the sunshine.”
“Alright, mother,” he said, hopping to his feet. He took his little wooden daggers with him, tucking them into his belt. Father always told him that a good warrior was never caught unarmed.
He bounced down the spiral staircase and made his way through the palace to the courtyard. The sprawling yard was host to a number of training activities this morning. Men on horseback charged at practice targets, foot soldiers formed shield walls to fend off their opponents. The Einherjar were training in groups on the far side of the yard. Their practice weapons scared Loki. He didn’t like the way they crackled and hissed with electricity. He was sure to keep his distance.
Odin presided over the yard, sitting high above on a balcony. Huginn and Muninn sat either side his chair. The Allfather watched his warriors train, knowing well that peace had been achieved but a well prepared and trained army was necessary even during peace. He noticed Loki walking through the courtyard but did not move.
Loki smiled and waved at his father but he did not see. His attention was elsewhere. Loki spotted Thor and his friends, Sif, Volstagg, Hogan, and Fandral, in the corner of the yard. They were huddled closely together, surely planning some game. Fandral saw Loki approaching and whispered something to Thor. He turned and addressed his brother.
“Where have you been all day?” he asked.
“I was practising my spells! Watch! Mother says I’m getting really good.”
He squeezed his eyes shut again and concentrated real hard, muttering the runes. A flash of green lit up the faces of the waiting children and revealed a little black mouse.
Thor’s friends erupted in laughter. Sif covered her mouth, stifling her own laughter. The little mouse cowered at the outburst. A sudden flash of green and Loki appeared once more.
“Ha! A mouse?” Volstagg teased, tears forming in his eyes.
Loki was mortified. He looked to his brother for support. Thor was doing his best not to laugh with his friends.
“Uh, yeah, Loki, that’s… that’s great! I guess we just don’t see how useful that is,” he stammered between giggles.
“Mother says if I keep practising that I could transform into much bigger creatures,” Loki protested.
“What? Like a rat?” Fandral taunted. He and Volstagg practically fell over laughing. Thor kicked them and they started to calm themselves. The laughter had caught the attention of the warriors in the courtyard and the King himself. Odin now looked down on his youngest son with unwavering eye, his face could only be read as steely disappointment.
Loki stared at the ground, downtrodden by his friends’ reaction to his spell.
“Look, Loki, maybe you should go back to practising and when you can do something more impressive, then come and show us,” Thor said.
“I was hoping I could play with you, brother,” Loki said softly, looking down at his feet.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea. We w—”
“Mother said you have to let me play with you!” he piped in.
Thor scoffed. “Fine. You can play but you have to play what we’re playing.”
“Okay!” Loki said, happy his brother had agreed without more protest. “What are we playing?”
“Hunt the Frost Giant,” Sif said, smiling wickedly at Loki.
He folded his arms. “I don’t like that game. You always pick me to be the giant.”
“Well that’s what we’re playing so get used to it or get lost,” Thor said. “Maybe you’ve spent too much time as that mouse. You’re starting to act like one, coward.”
Loki sighed. He glanced up at his father, who now watched their interaction closely. Not wanting to look weak by leaving, he agreed to play their game.
“We’ll draw straws to pick who’s the giant first,” Thor said, scooping up some straws of hay from the ground. He stood with his back to everyone, carefully arranging the straws so they were even in his hand. He turned and offered the first one for his brother. Loki scrutinised the straws and drew the one he thought was longest. Thor offered the others theirs. One by one they drew and Loki realised that his straw was looking quite short compared to the others.
Once everyone had drawn, they all held their straws out towards the middle. Loki’s heart sank as his was clearly the shortest. The others giggled at his distress.
“Looks like Loki is the giant, again,” Fandral taunted.
“This should be easy,” Volstagg agreed.
“Alright, Loki. You know the rules. If you make it to the ice room before we catch you, you win. But if we catch you, we win,” Thor said, hefting his wooden hammer onto his shoulder. “And no magic, mouse boy! We’ll give you a thirty second head start.”
“Sixty!” Loki protested.
“Twenty-nine,” Thor continued. The others readied their weapons, laughing at their easy target.
Panicking, Loki took off towards the exit from the courtyard back towards the Palace. He ran through the twisting hallways and corridors. Darting back in forth between servants and attendants, he made his way down a staircase, getting closer to the kitchens and the ice room.
“There he is!” Sif shouted.
Loki gasped. How did she get there?! he thought. She ran in through the entrance on a landing, cutting off his route to the kitchens. Thor and Fandral had caught up to Sif and blocked the entrance Sif had come through. Loki stopped on the steps and turned back to find Volstagg and Hogan careening down the stairs towards him. There was no other way for Loki to go.
His chest heaved, out of breath from the run. He quickly assessed his options and made a split second decision. He leapt down the rest of the stairs and dove for the opening between Sif and the wall. Sif swung her wooden sword but Loki dove just beneath the blade and scampered down the stairs. Elated by his small victory, he ran with greater speed, making the mistake of turning his back to his opponents.
Thor’s hammer hit him with all the force of a charging bilgesnipe, knocking Loki down several steps. The other children approached, encircling him.
“Sort of a little giant, isn’t he,” Fandral laughed as he drew his wooden sabre. Sif, Volstagg, and Hogan were closing in behind him. Losing this early in the game would certainly warrant a week’s worth of taunting and teasing. Loki knew he had to get away.
“I’d say that was fatal,” Volstagg remarked. The others laughed.
Loki whimpered from the stairs. Slowly, he pulled himself to his hands and knees. He wasn’t ready to quit.
“Not quite,” Thor said, picking up his hammer. Another blow hit its mark on Loki’s side, putting him back on the floor.
“That oughtta do it,” Thor said.
Tears stinging his eyes, Loki lay on the floor, trying to regain his breath. His back and chest throbbed.
Thor sighed. “Come on, brother, get up. We didn’t think you’d make it very far anyways.” Thor stepped closer to his brother, leaning down to give him a hand up.
Loki took his chance, quickly drawing his wooden dagger and lunging at Thor, stabbing him in the abdomen. Thor let out a yelp as Loki leapt to his feet and ran off.
“The hunt continues!” Volstagg laughed, running off with the others not far behind him. Thor took a moment to recover himself. After a moment, he straightened up and smiled.
Loki jumped down the stairs two at a time, hoping to put distance between himself and his pursuers. The kitchens were just ahead and then down another few steps to the ice room.
I could make it, he thought. I could really win this time!
He flew through the kitchen door and stopped only a moment to throw it closed behind him. The cooks and servants were used to intrusions like these now. Loki ducked and dodged under servants bustling about with heavy trays.
“We’ve got him now!” he heard Hogan cry. The other children had made it through the door.
Why do these kitchens have to be so big?
Loki spotted the doorway to the ice room. He was so close but he needed to slow down the other children who were closing in fast. He looked about quickly. Two cooks were carrying an entire roast hog to be laid out for supper tonight. They crossed directly in front of Loki’s path. Dropping to his knees, he slid beneath the mass of meat and leapt to his feet on the other side.
“No!” Thor shouted. “Get out of the way!”
That’s it! Loki thought. I’ve done it! I’ve finally won!
He crossed the threshold of the ice room and felt a sudden tug at his ankles as he tripped down the steps. He stumbled down the steps, looking down to see a tripwire at his feet. He looked up in an instant to see a cascade of blue paint falling from a barrel above, covering him head to toe. It got into his eyes and stung. It tasted bitter on his tongue. Shaking his head frantically, he stumbled backward and fell. He rubbed his eyes desperately to get the stuff out. Hot tears stung his cheeks. He could hear laughing. Cruel, wicked laughing.
He looked up to see his brother and their friends pointing and laughing at him.
“Look! His eyes are even red!” Volstagg cried.
The five children howled with laughter at the little prince turned blue. Volstagg rolled on the ground, unable to contain himself. Fandral leaned on Hogan, laughing hysterically. Thor just smiled at his brother.
Loki coughed and sputtered. Finding his feet again, he looked down at his clothes and skin turned blue by the paint. He was humiliated. His whole body shook with emotion. Pain, rage, despair, fear. Thor approached him.
“Ah, brother,” Thor laughed, opening his arms to him. “Now that you look the part, shall we finish our game?”
Loki cried and ran away from his brother. He ran back through the kitchens, up the stairs, past guards and servants and nobles, leaving a trail of the blue paint behind him.
He burst into this mother’s chambers, still coughing up the vile substance.
“Loki!” Frigga exclaimed. “What happened? Who did this?”
“Thor and his friends!” Loki choked. Frigga scooped him up and whisked him off to the baths. The little boy sobbed into her shoulder, smearing blue paint into her gown.
“Draw a bath, quickly,” she ordered the servants.
The servants drew a warm bath for the prince.
“Leave us,” Frigga commanded. The servants quickly left the room, shutting the doors behind them.
She wiped away as much of the paint as she could before placing the little prince in the tub. She noted the bruises and welts that had formed on his body.
“It’s alright, Loki. We’ll get all of this off of you,” she said to him, scrubbing him rigorously with soap.
“I only wanted to play with them,” he managed to say between sobs. He rubbed his face aggressively trying to wipe away the blue from his eyes. Frigga took his hands and gently cleaned his face.
“I’ll handle them, don’t worry,” she said.
Frigga lifted him from the water and dried him off. Using scented oil, she scrubbed the more difficult patches of blue on his skin, finally removing the last of the paint. She dressed him in his favourite green tunic and trousers. He sat quietly while she brushed his black hair back the way he liked it. When she was done, he hopped down from the stool and walked towards the door, gingerly rubbing his side where Thor’s hammer had hit him.
“Loki,” Frigga said. The boy stopped at his mother’s call but did not turn to face her. She hurt for him. She could not stand seeing him so depressed. He had such trouble fitting in with the other children, especially his brother. He needs to find friends of his own, she thought. The Berserkers, ever the King’s protectors, continued their day to day training and activities. Young Sigyn had settled in among the warriors and children in the hall and had begun her training with them.
————————————————————————————————–
The sun dawned and the children of Jorrvaskr were already wide awake. After a quick breakfast, they spilled out of the hall and into the courtyard. Little Sigyn, slightly smaller than the other boys and girls, darted back and forth between them in order to get to the practice weapons rack first. She leapt up and grabbed her favourite greatsword off the rack, beating Vilkas to it once again. He glared at her, taking the other beat up practice sword off the rack instead. Sigyn slung the sword behind her head, across her shoulders, smiling triumphantly at the annoyed twin. This had been their game; a race that began the moment they woke and rushed to the table for breakfast. Sigyn’s agility gave her the advantage among the other children. Despite her small size, she could outrun nearly all of them.
Skjor strode into the yard, a smug grin on his face as he took the sword from Sigyn’s hands. Vilkas laughed at her despair and smoothly stretched out his hand to take the sword from Skjor. But the old warrior had other plans. He walked over to Aela and dropped the sword at her feet. The little archer, quite confused by the gesture, held her little bow closer to her chest in defence. Skjor took the bow from her anyway and tossed it to Vilkas who stared dumbly at the unfamiliar weapon.
Skjor looked around at the other children. “Everyone else, trade your weapons with each other. I want everyone to use a different class weapon than normal today,” he ordered. Confused and slightly heartbroken, the children traded their weapons about. Sigyn stared dejectedly at the dagger in her hands given to her by one of the other children. The smallest weapon for the smallest warrior. She looked back towards the pavilion where Kodlak stood. He smiled and chuckled, glad to have the upper hand over his gaggle of wards for once.
“If you’re going to be a Berserker one day, you’ll need to have mastery of all weapon types,” Skjor continued, walking about his students. “The best warriors can turn anything into a weapon but we’ll start with these. Partner up or head to the targets.”
The children moped to their respective groups. Sigyn trudged over to Aela who stooped to pick up the greatsword from the ground. She struggled to get a good grip on it. Sigyn corrected hands on the sword, smiling up at her friend.
“Thanks,” Aela said.
Sigyn shrugged. The children awaited Skjor’s command to begin sparring. Sigyn looked down again at the dagger, assessing it’s light weight in her hand. Without a shield, she would have to rely on dodging and her footwork to avoid getting hit. Aela had the advantage with a longer weapon, doubling her reach but her unfamiliarity with the sword would work against her.
“Begin!” Skjor shouted, startling Sigyn out of her strategizing.
Aela began with a hard lob over her shoulder. Sigyn dodged the shoddy attack easily, stepping aside. She made for an opening on Aela’s side with the dagger but misjudged the length of the unfamiliar weapon and missed, sliding behind Aela’s back. Aela turned, swinging the massive weapon around in a semicircle in an attempt to hit her target. Sigyn jumped back, dodging the swing. The two took a moment to regain themselves. Aela readjusted her grip on the greatsword. Her chest heaved with the effort of swinging it around.
Sigyn watched her opponent carefully, gauging her next move. Aela always attacks first, she thought. Aela started at her again, this time holding the weapon upright. She raised it above her head for another downward hack but Sigyn took advantage of the opening to Aela’s vitals, thrusting the dagger into her chest.
“Agh!” Aela cried, dropping the weapon in frustration.
Sigyn looked back at Kodlak, standing under the porch, watching the children. He smiled at her and nodded.
“This is impossible, Skjor! I can’t swing this branch around!” Aela exclaimed, kicking the sword. Sigyn turned back to her friend and stooped to pick up the sword. Skjor was watching the children firing arrows at the targets.
Despite having only one good eye, he was able to see everything. These children were all cunning enough he had learned that it was best to keep an eye on all of them at once, often joking that he could beat the Gatekeeper at his own job. He had seen Sigyn’s ‘fatal’ blow to Aela’s chest. He had even anticipated the eruption of frustration. He looked over at Aela and Sigyn and frowned.
“Keep going until your quivers are empty,” he ordered the children at the targets. He turned his attention to the two girls and walked over to them, an eyebrow raised at Aela’s tantrum.
“You’re complaining a lot for a dead girl,” he chuckled as he approached.
“I don’t know the first thing about this sword!” Aela said.
“You are too focused on attacking—”
“That’s all you can do with this thing!”
Skjor sighed. “Is it? Is there nothing else you can do with it?”
Aela scoffed. “Burn it.”
Skjor looked to Sigyn. “Well, you’re the greatsword expert. What else can she do with it?”
Sigyn looked down. She hated being put on the spot like this. She, of course, knew the answer but it did not feel right to tell Aela what to do. Aela was the best pupil here.
“Well?” Skjor said.
“Y- you can block with it,” Sigyn stammered. “Hold it out, across your chest like this.” She demonstrated with the greatsword and then handed it back to Aela.
Aela took the weapon and mimicked Sigyn’s stance.
“This way you block off those big openings you’re leaving for Sigyn to stab at,” Skjor instructed. “Remember to use your head. Be strategic. You’re facing off with an unfamiliar weapon against an unfamiliar weapon. You have to know your attack inside and out. What opening are you leaving? Where are your feet? Where are your hands? Are your vitals exposed? Where’s your opponent? Where are they looking? Now, try again.”
Aela and Sigyn squared off again. Sigyn waited to see if Aela would still make the first move. She wasn’t wrong.
Aela started towards her slowly, keeping the sword up in a block. Sigyn stepped to the left, in a wide circle which Aela began to counter. They continued until they had switched sides when Sigyn made her move. She feinted towards the blade of Aela’s sword causing Aela to swing haphazardly. Sigyn leapt to Aela’s other side. Now, off balance, Aela’s back was left wide open for Sigyn to strike. Thrusting the dagger again, Sigyn knew she would hit her mark.
Aela let the end of the sword drop to the ground as she used her now free hand to grab Sigyn’s wrist and pull her in towards her. A swift turn and yank and Sigyn was face to face with Aela. Startled and confused, Sigyn attempted to recoil and get out of Aela’s grip. Aela smiled, throwing her head back and then forward again, headbutting Sigyn.
A flash of stars flooded across Sigyn’s vision with a burst of pain and then darkness. A moment later, her sight returned and she sat up from the ground. Things were fuzzy and she felt half deaf. She rubbed her head where Aela had hit her. A small knot had formed above her left eye near the bridge of her nose. She couldn’t see out of her left eye at all.
“Sigyn!” Kodlak shouted from across the yard. He sprinted over and knelt down beside her.
She held back tears from the pain and embarrassment and shook her head in attempt to get her vision and hearing back.
“I’m fine,” she replied.
“Of course you’re not. Look at me,” Kodlak urged her, gently lifting her chin so he could look at her blackened eye.
She looked up at a fuzzy Kodlak, shaking her head again to clear her vision. Kodlak held her chin and gently touched the side of her face, studying the knot on her nose and her black eye.
“That doesn’t count, Aela,” Farkas shouted, laughing with the other boys. Aela herself couldn’t manage to stifle a little giggle as she approached the two.
“Sorry, Sig—”
“What were you thinking?” Kodlak shouted, whipping around to face Aela, Sigyn’s face still in his hands.
“I- I- I was just using my head, you know, like Erik says—” Aela trailed off.
“You could have killed her! You’re much stronger than she is. Remember, we talked about this. You’re not supposed to hit her that hard! She’s- She’s,” Kodlak turned back to Sigyn.
“What?” she looked between Aela and Kodlak. “You wh–? I’m what?” she asked, her good eye filled with angry tears. Her lip quivered as she awaited an answer.
“You know what I mean, little one. You’re mortal. You can’t take the big hits that we can,” he said gently.
“Yes I can!” Sigyn shouted. “And I did!” Rage filled her tiny body and she threw off his hands and pulled herself up. She turned to face him as he stood. She puffed out her chest, making herself look as big as possible. “You always say that I’m different but I can do everything they can do!” she shouted. “If you just gave me a chance, I could show you that!”
The other children had gone silent, gaping in shock at Sigyn’s outburst. She was normally so quiet they could lose her in an empty room. No one had ever heard her yell before, especially not at Kodlak.
Sigyn wobbled on her feet. She put her hand to her head again and steadied herself.
As astonished as everyone else, Kodlak stared back at her. “Sigyn,” he pleaded.
Sigyn looked around the yard at everyone staring at her in shock. The rage fading, she became suddenly aware of herself and her outburst. She looked at Kodlak in terror. She shook her head again, this time at her own actions. Stumbling over herself, she ran to the doors of the hall and flung them open, running inside. She ran right into Tilma, nearly knocking her down.
“Sigyn? What happened?” she asked earnestly, noting Sigyn’s black eye.
Sigyn just backed away and ran downstairs to her room. She grabbed her wolf off her bed and hugged him. Sitting down on the bed, she brought her knees up to her chest. She was mad and scared and hurt and embarrassed all at once. She buried her face in her arms, wiping away the tears trying to escape her eye. The other warriors never cry, she thought.
She gingerly touched around her blackened eye and the knot on her forehead. The door to the Quarters opened and she froze. Holding her breath, she listened to the approaching footsteps. She leapt off the bed and dove beneath it just as the door to the room opened. She saw Kodlak’s boots at the threshold.
“Sigyn,” he said. “I know you’re in here. Come on out.”
She felt torn in all directions. She didn’t want Kodlak to be mad at her but she was so mad at him and embarrassed at what she had done. The indecision froze her in place.
Kodlak waited patiently for Sigyn to reveal herself. He knew where she was. Ever since he had brought her here, anytime she felt scared or upset, her first instinct was to hide in the smallest space she could. In her room: under the bed. Elsewhere it could be anything from a cupboard to an empty barrel. After some time, when she didn’t appear, Kodlak sighed.
“I understand, little one. Take your time. We can talk about this later.” He turned and left the room, shutting the door quietly behind him.
Sigyn let out her breath. She curled up into a ball under the bed. The cramped space made her oddly comfortable. She was glad Kodlak had left. She just wanted to be alone. Her head ached. She tried desperately to clear her mangled thoughts.
I’m not so different from them, she thought. I’m just a little smaller and die when I get old. That doesn’t mean I’m weaker.
But Aela downed me with a single blow. Maybe I am weaker. Maybe I really can’t be a warrior. I want to so bad.
But I’ve gotten so good with the greatsword. Rollo said he couldn’t even stand upright with a greatsword when he was my age. I can do it. I’m the best with the greatsword. Vilkas won’t admit it but he knows it too.
Am I weak? What if the others just go easy on me because Kodlak tells them too? Is that what they’ve been doing forever?
I’ll show all of them that I’m good at being a warrior. I’ll be the best warrior in all of Asgard. I’ll be the best Berserker in history.
I’ll never be a Berserker.
She hugged her wolf hard and fought with herself for hours. Finally, exhausted, still in pain, and hungry, she crawled out from under the bed. She felt as though one of Eorlund’s steel pokers had been driven through her eyeball.
“Ouch,” she whimpered, holding her head in her hands. She swallowed hard and blinked her good eye rapidly. This only made the pain worse. She shook her head again and slowly climbed to her feet, using the bed as a stabiliser. Trudging heavily across the floor, she thought about what she would say to Kodlak and the others. She rounded the corner to the door leading upstairs, still holding her hand against her black eye. Putting a hand on the door, she paused.
What will I say?
She sighed and opened the door quietly. She could hear the raucous laughter and commotion at the dinner table.
Maybe I can sneak in and no one will notice me, she thought, hopefully.
She silently ascended the stairs and peeked through the railings. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood. The warriors were all laughing and telling stories, as usual. The other children were teasing each other and throwing food at one another, as usual. Then, she spotted Kodlak and Skjor at the head of the table. They were not partaking in the shenanigans. The two old warriors were discussing something earnestly. Kodlak was shaking his head in apparent disagreement as Skjor spoke to him. Sigyn took a deep breath and walked up the rest of the stairs.
Silence fell on the room as she appeared at the top of the stairs. She kept her eye down, focusing on the grain of the wood floor rather than the shocked faces of her friends. Her stomach turned. Her face burned. She no longer felt hungry. Walking towards the benches on the children’s end of the table, she searched desperately for a place to sit. Aela pushed Farkas off the bench and onto the floor, making room for Sigyn.
“Over here,” she said, putting her hand on the seat. Farkas got up from the floor and took his plate around to the other side of the table.
“Thank you, Farkas,” Sigyn said, softly. He smiled kindly at her as he found another seat. Sigyn crawled up onto the bench between Aela and Rollo. The others had begun talking again, to Sigyn’s relief, continuing their conversations and stories.
“How do you feel?” Aela asked. Sigyn could see the guilt on her face.
“I’m fine. Just a little hungry,” Sigyn replied.
“I’m really sorry.”
“It was a fair move.” Sigyn rubbed her bad eye and smiled at her friend, trying to reassure her that everything was alright.
“No,” Aela said, looking into Sigyn’s eye. “About… about what… about taking it easy on you.”
“That’s not your fault,” Sigyn replied, glancing up at Kodlak.
He watched her from the head of the table but did not speak. Sigyn filled her plate with food and ate quietly, listening to the other children around her. Thankfully, none of them talked about what had happened in the yard today. She ate quickly. Once finished with her plate, she got up from her place and tried to sneak away from the table.
“Sigyn,” Kodlak’s voice boomed across the room.
She turned, reluctant to face him.
“Come with me, little one,” he said, gently. “We need to talk.”
Sigyn looked down at her feet and walked over to him. He stood and beckoned for her to follow. The room had hushed once again, all ears trying to catch a whisper of what might be said. Kodlak did not have favourites among his wards but it was no secret that he was most fond of Sigyn. For the warriors and children to see them at odds was as intriguing as heart-breaking. Kodlak understood this and led Sigyn outside, into the yard, away from prying eyes and ears.
He lit a few candles on the chandelier and on the table so they could see. The light was dim but Sigyn liked it. Looking out from under the gabled porch, she could see billions of stars. As Kodlak turned back towards her, she let her eye fall back to her shoes, keeping well away from his steely gaze.
“Come and sit,” he said, softly. “By me.”
Sigyn climbed up on the bench beside him and plopped down, folding her arms. She stared at the candle flame, watching it dance to the soft wind.
Kodlak took a deep breath and let it out in a heavy sigh. “You know, when we found you, all alone on Midgard, you were so tiny,” he began. Sigyn looked up at him for the first time. Her brow furrowed with his mention of her size. She knew this story, though she did not remember it well, except for the nightmares that sometimes haunted her sleep.
“I could not believe that this little girl in the basket was the only mortal to survive this atrocity,” he continued. Sigyn’s expression softened. “You were just a baby; could barely stand up on your own legs. We looked for your parents but…” he sighed again and looked down at her. Sigyn quickly looked away. “You were scared of us. Rightly, of course. We were strangers, covered in Jotunn blood. I’m sure we looked terrifying. I picked you up and held you close. And then… you looked into my eyes and it was like the fear just melted away. You twirled your hands into my beard and.. and then reached up with you tiny, little hand and touched my cheek.” Kodlak paused for a long while as if savouring the memory.
“It was then that I knew I was going to take you back with me to Jorrvaskr. Ha, to Skjor’s dismay!” he laughed. “Because, we did not really have many dealings with humans. Mortals were forbidden to enter Asgard, but in that moment, there was no stopping me. I was going to get you back, even if it meant breaking my oath to the King.”
Sigyn gasped. The thought of Kodlak thinking of defying the Allfather for her was Asgardshattering.
“I took you to the Allfather and asked his permission to take you back to Asgard. It was a bold request, I admit. But as I said, I would not be stopped. You were just a baby. You did not deserve the pain you were already suffering. You did not deserve to pay for the war we had caused… Thankfully, and rather surprisingly, the Allfather gave me that permission and I brought you back here.
“You were so much smaller than the others. I had never really cared for a child so small before. I thought you were so fragile that the slightest bump or scratch might break you. The other children were as rough then as they are now and I feared they would play too rough with you; that you might get hurt in such a way that would…” he paused.
“That I’d die?” Sigyn asked, her voice barely a whisper. Her arms slipped out of the knot she’d wound them in, her hands dropping into her lap.
Kodlak looked down at her, this time making eye contact. He nodded slowly.
“It sounds silly but I’d seen how easily Midgardians could perish. Sickness could kill them in a matter of days, a fall from the wrong angle could snap a neck, a blow to the head… could kill instantly. It was all terrifying to me.”
“But you’re not afraid of anything,” Sigyn said softly.
Kodlak chuckled at the child’s response. “Not of many things, no,” he said. “But there are times I do fear for you. And that is a great weakness. Not for me but on you.”
Sigyn cocked her head to the side. “I don’t understand,” she said.
Kodlak looked into the distance. “My fear for you has come out in my constant smothering of you. I told the other children to take it easy on you. I asked them to pull their punches when sparring and not to hit you too hard when practising. I’ve tried so hard to protect you, to ensure that you don’t get hurt, that I’ve held you back from your true potential.”
Sigyn’s eyes widened at the old man’s confession. She could not find any words. They both sat still in the silence, staring out at the stars.
“You are a good little warrior, Sigyn,” Kodlak said, finally breaking the silence. “And I know that one day you will be a great one. Asgard’s Midgardian Berserker.”
Sigyn looked up at him in shock.
Does he really think I could be that good?
He’s probably just saying that to make you feel better.
“Do you really think so?” she asked, looking up at him in earnest.
“Of course I do,” he said. His expression was gentle and kind. He put his hand around her shoulders and pulled her close. “You have such spirit. No matter how hard something is for you, you continue to try until you get it. You know, Skjor says you’re stubborn like me.” He looked down at her and laughed. She could not contain her own smile, snuggling closer to him.
“That’s not such a bad thing,” he said, chuckling. “I promise, little one, from now on I won’t coddle you. You’re growing up so fast…”
He turned so he was looking directly at Sigyn. Her green eye shimmered in the candlelight. “You’re not like them but that’s alright. Your strengths are different from theirs. Use them to your advantage in your training. You are smart. I see the way you analyse your opponents attacks. You’re fast too and light on your feet. Not something many two-handed tanks have. I believe in you, Sigyn. If you continue to put your all into your training, I could see you becoming a very good Berserker. Maybe even one of the best.”
Sigyn let out the breath she had been holding. She had never felt such relief. He really did believe in her. If he believes in me, I can believe in me, she thought, hugging Kodlak.
“I’ll make you proud,” she said.
“You do every day,” he said.

Bright Lights
Summary: a place of refuge is usually a place where someone can relax, enjoy themselves without having to be judged and simply be without stress. For her, and a certain prince of Asgard, that place happens to be the library.
A/N: Might continue this as a series, not sure yet :/
Pairing: OC x Loki
(Originally posted on my side account loki-fanfiction)
She hated Asgard. The cripplingly bright halls and the extreme covering of gold in every hall was too much for her. Every single room was too painful to look at, and so there were only a few rooms that she could use as a sanctuary in the palace to hide from the constant stream of invasive light.
One of her favourite rooms to hide in was the library. Though it did have many windows it wasn’t painful, it was only ever gently lit enough so that you could read a book without having to light a candle unless it was nighttime. The architecture wasn’t the bold and brash Asgardian style, but a more subtle Vanir hall, possibly due to the queen’s love of the room. It was a simple and kinder place, where those who preferred the quiet could sit for hours and do nothing but enjoy the company of knowledge.
The problem of such an accessible sanctuary is that others sometimes came to share it. More specifically one certain someone; The second son of Asgard.
She’s see him sliding in since she was young, having loved the quiet confides of the shelves of books since childhood. Often her mother had left her alone with the mountains of knowledge and too much time to kill, as it seemed Frigga did with Loki, and so she was very much used to the prince’s presence without being intimidated by it.
Of course, she had never approached him properly. Once and a while she may have sent him the odd smile or the occasional wave, but he was here for quiet in the same way she was, and so she left him in the quiet that he had wanted.
Of course, there were some exceptions to them interacting, perhaps when asking if the other had seen a book by a certain title or if they had checked out a certain book, because it was nowhere to be found. Sometimes, when she was feeling particularly dissociative towards whatever book she was reading, when she had gone over a certain passage a thousand times over and yet it didn’t stick, she’d just close her eyes and allow herself a small rest in a quiet nook.
In those moments she would sometimes feel a pair of eyes settling on her. Perhaps in curiosity, perhaps in an odd expression of a willingness to interact, she had no clue. She just knew that sometimes, when she did open her eyes, there would be a pair of crystalline blue one’s meeting hers for a brief moment, followed by a swift breaking of eye contact from a blushing Asgardian prince.
He had been in the library less, more recently.
There were moments where she would walk past his nook, the one that had almost become his own in a way, and feel somewhat perturbed that he wasn’t occupying it. There were moments when he was there, but always distracted, frustrated.
There were a couple of moments when she could see his fists balled around books he was dragging from place to place. There was something very clearly wrong, and whilst she did want to investigate or understand, her mother had always told her curiosity killed the cat.
Of course, there were many moments which tested her curiosity and ability to simply stay put, and right now was one of them. She was currently watching Loki rooting through many books, searching it seemed for a very well hidden novel. Or possibly the one in her hand. He was muttering in a slightly mad manner, every part of his body somewhat tensed as if on a knife’s edge.
Every once and a while he would flit his eyes towards the door, as if wondering when or if someone was going to come through, before resuming shuffling through books. A single brash laugh made him freeze completely, followed by a giggle and a couple of chuckles from down the hall.
Instantly, she could see panic build in his eyes. Whomever was coming towards the door seemed to be somewhat threatening, either that or someone to be avoided.
He slowly made his way through the bookcases, sliding along the shelves before tripping slightly on one of the many books littered around, and stumbling into the small nook where she was sitting and reading, watching in curiosity.
As soon as he fell, his eyes widen slightly, looking directly into hers. Perhaps in some weird recognition, or perhaps a realisation of a plan. Either way, he raised his finger slowly to his lips and drew the curtain on the nook slightly, making only him hidden, whilst she was still completely exposed to whomever he was hiding from.
Slowly, the laughter from the hall grew louder as the people approaching grew closer, eventually turning into the library to reveal the band of warriors 3, Sif and Thor. They all stood in the room as if they didn’t quite understand whereabouts to go, all of them looking quite confused as to what they were looking for.
Should she had not been hiding the second prince from his own brother, for whatever reason, she might have been at ease at the appearance of the warriors in the library, however her heart was thumping slightly faster in her chest.
Instead of sitting and doing nothing, she stood up slowly and walked towards the group, greeting them with a slight smile and a nod to the prince.
“Your Highness,” She said, her voice almost wavering and giving herself away, “May I help you?”
He simply waved in a nonchalant manner, not swatting her away but almost dismissing her, “No need to worry, simply looking for my brother.”
Oh,” she said, trying to silence her heart beating in her chest, “I can’t say I’ve seen him today.”
Thor nodded slowly, turning back to his friends and shrugging slightly, before turning away.
“Thank you anyway, miss…?”
“Sigyn.” She replied, curtsying and turning back towards her little cove, trying not to seem too eager in getting back to her reading.
As she was walking back, she made sure to listen out for anyone still left in the library from the previous visitors, hoping to not catch their attention in any way. As soon as the groups footsteps faded, she began jogging back to her small retreat. When she was finally there she drew back the curtains to a now relaxed and smiling prince.
“Thank you,” he breathed, turning to her and flashing her a brilliant smile, “Sigyn, was it?”
Sigyn nodded slowly, unsure of what to say or what to do.
“Well, thank you Sigyn, I’ll remember this.”
With that, he vanished, leaving her as confused as ever.

(cracks knuckles)
Some of yall are gonna fuckin hate me.
NONE of you are mentioning ships.
So, before yahoo bought tumblr and enacted the porn ban/censorships, even entertainment news sources knew the most popular pairing with Loki in it was Thorki. They literally held polls that resulted in Thorki winning and showed Tom fanart (which also sparked debate of whether or not that should be allowed, are they showcasing art without credit, are late night hosts harassing Tom by doing this, does the OP get harassed afterwards- i think they did, etc.) And then the interviews and SNL skits...
This, we believe, is largely because Thor and Jane in Thor 1 shared absolutely NO chemistry whatsoever. Additionally, there was no one to pair with Loki with back then besides Sif (canonically hates/distrusts him) or Darcy (literally never interacted). It also doesn't help that Marvel was too pussy to give Loki a love interest because Tom Hiddleston himself kind of struggled to have a love interest back then. He had a very large and devoted following, and frankly, he's done well not holding/showing any kind of animosity towards the "loki army" for immediately hating anyone he dated.
Speaking of people he dated though, Pre-/Post-Dark World's time is when people were coming around to other pairings with Loki, such as Loki/Scarlet Witch (dated the actress, so ppl were taking this pairing as soon-to-be canon at the time), Loki/Darcy, Loki/Jane (AUs where he was the one who met Jane first), Edit: fuckin a' I forgot FrostIron, and, one of my personal favorites, Loki/Sigyn. The last one just had glorious fanart and was basically used as a fandom-insert character to give Loki everything the fandom always wanted to give him.
Seeing as they were able to give Natasha, like, 3 separate possible love interests, I think they could have given Loki just one. I know they were scared of the backlash bc Thor and Jane I think got voted in some polls as having the worst chemistry.
someone explain to me what the loki fandom was like here in 2012-2013 because in 2013 i thought i was too good for marvel and hated the avengers (i was dumb). also at the time i was a kid, and therefore wasn’t on tumblr. so. i’d like to know, if anyone would spare me the fandom history!

Let's go for the obvious meta: brotherhood
send me a topic to write a meta about my muse on
{ @livingsouloflove }
Tumblr media
// In case you couldn’t guess, the above gif represents me, screaming about my feels concerning Loki, Thor, the relationship between the two, and how it relates both to their relationship with the rest of the family and their world(s), as well as how it relates to the overall narrative/plot of the Thor/Avengers movies.
I would argue that, of all of the relationships in the MCU, Loki and Thor may well have one of the most complicated––if not the most complicated.
To begin, there are quite a few references made in the movies about shadows. Loki makes most of them, but even his mother makes some (in a deleted scene). When Thor asks his mother, Frigga, if she ever regrets teaching Loki magic––perhaps his primary tool/weapon aside from that silver tongue he uses to such terrible effect––she responds thusly, “No. You and your father cast large shadows, I had hoped by sharing my gift with Loki, he could find some sun for himself.”
For as long as Loki can remember, Thor was the favorite. Of his father.
No matter how clever Loki might be, no matter how his clever mind might triumph over impossible odds and the more mundane training regiments the young princes no doubt had to endure, Odin was always more attentive to Thor. He always knew better how to praise Thor and appreciate his fighting. Is this out of any maliciousness on Odin’s part? Perhaps not. It might well simply be because Thor was more like Odin and Odin could understand and respect that far better than Loki’s magic and cunning.
Thor was also he favorite of their ‘shared’ friends.
The Lady Sif and the Warriors Three always looked to Thor as their de facto leader. Thor was always tall and strong, sturdy of build and good in a fight, and their four friends realized him as being someone like hem. A warrior.
Loki, on the other hand. Loki with his slim build, coupled with the fact that I suspect––due to being a Frost Giant brought to another world where he had no previous exposure to whatever illnesses existed there––he was perhaps even rather sickly as a child. Sif and the Warriors Three, I don’t think, were ever truly unkind to him, beyond a few perhaps too sharp barbs every now and then. They thought it was simply teasing, but to someone like Loki who wanted so desperately to fit in and to be liked and acknowledged, it came across more as criticism, as being disliked and mocked.
And so, Thor was favored, by all except perhaps their mother who loved both of her sons [and by one other, though this is solely my own headcanon that pulls a little from Norse myth and includes Sigyn].
So often in the shadow of his brother, Loki at last decided to leave Thor to his friends. If they preferred Thor––and Thor, though I think made attempts to bridge the gap between his friends and Loki, could not quite do it––then they could have Thor and he would leave them be.
Loki was still quite young when he began to hide himself away, often in the libraries and archives, making friends that would not turn away from him or judge him for not being as strong or as tall or as fierce. He made friends of books. He read and he read and he read until he likely could have told more of the libraries and archives and their contents than those meant to maintain them. Unfortunately, as much as he enjoyed reading, it could not entirely replace the need for friends, or entirely banish his loneliness.
Frigga, noticing her (adopted) child’s deep sadness, decided to teach him magic, as well as her more agile and acrobatic fighting style. With his mother’s guidance, he grew to be powerful in magic, perhaps more powerful than any others in Asgard, aside from his mother, and with her fighting style, far more agreeable to his lithe form, he even began to win the various training battles.
No doubt he thought that perhaps his father would at last acknowledge him as an equal to his brother, yet, as above-mentioned, Odin did not.
Regardless, though he envied him, still Loki could not hate Thor. He loved (and still loves) his brother dearly, in fact. But. More than anyone, Loki knew and recognized Thor’s limitations and out of love for his brother and for Asgard, he attempted to delay Thor’s coronation, at last until he was ready. Because, here’s the thing, Loki never wanted the throne. Not until he felt that was the only way he could prove himself. All he wanted was to be noticed. To be equal to Thor in his father’s eyes.
Now, when Loki finds out that he’s ‘adopted’, that puts quite a different slant on things. It brings all of his insecurities and fears. It puts all of that favoritism and exclusion into a much more sinister light.
Loki: The Casket wasn’t the only thing you took from Jotunheim that day, was it? Odin: No. In the aftermath of the battle I went into the temple and I found a baby. Small for a Giant’s offspring, abandoned, suffering, left to die. Laufey’s son. Loki: Laufey’s son? Odin: Yes. Loki: Why? You were knee-deep in Jotun blood. Why would you take me? Odin: You were an innocent child. Loki: No. You took me for a purpose. What was it?… TELL ME! Odin: I thought we could unite our kingdoms one day. Bring about an alliance, bring about permanent peace… through you. Loki: What? Odin: But those plans no longer matter. Loki: So I am no more than another stolen relic, locked up here until you might have use of me? Odin: Why do you twist my words? Loki: You could have told me what I was from the beginning! Why didn’t you? Odin: You’re my son… I wanted only to protect you from the truth… Loki: What, because I… I… I am the monster parents tell their children about at night? Odin: [unwell] No! No! Loki: You know, it all makes sense now, why you favored Thor all these years, because no matter how much you claim to love me, you could never have a Frost Giant sitting on the throne of Asgard!
[ excerpt from this scene ]
See, even in Odin’s claim that saving Loki was out of pity, out of love, out of whatever paternal instincts Odin might have had, Loki––‘god’ of lies––knew that it wasn’t the truth. Or at least not all of it.
Think about this though. As Loki points out, there were no doubt stories telling of how the Frost Giants were nothing but monsters, heathens, barbarians. Tales telling of how the Asgardians slew them. And Loki grew up being told these tales, hearing them and learning how awful and inferior the Frost Giants are to Asgardians. And learning something like that, from so young, only to find out that all of those tales you have been told, likely even some your supposed father told… you weren’t one of the Asgardians. You were one of the monsters.
So, yes, Loki gets angry. And Loki lashes out. Loki takes it out on Odin and on Thor, perhaps especially on Thor. But he’s not angry at Thor. Not really. In fact, I believe it kills him to lash out at Thor like this. Just watch this scene.
Loki is trying to provoke a fight so that he can prove himself. He needs to show that he is strong, that he can best Thor. And yet, his eyes are welling with tears. He is in so much pain, yet––a flaw in his character––rather than seek his mother and brother for comfort and understanding (though, to be fair, he probably wouldn’t have expected much of either from Thor, pre-banishment), he lashes out.
Now, when Avengers rolls around, I would put forth that he isn’t acting entirely of his own will. To read more about my take on that, see this post. But, even with that, there are still moments [ such as here and here ]. In the latter clip, “Sentiment,” he says, even as a tear escapes his eyes.
But it’s in Thor: The Dark World, where you truly see the relationship between he two brothers, both what it had been and what it could be again.
Because, despite everything, despite his anger and his envy, despite feeling as though he lived in Thor’s shadow, I believe he still cares for Thor, still wants his attention, even if he can’t admit that even to himself. Examples of this relationship, from what it had become to what it evolves into even in the course of the movie, can be found here / here, here, here, and lastly here [ though, if you don’t mind MAJOR spoilers, there’s also this here and here ]. I mean, I would fully advocate that anyone who wants to interact with my Loki should 100% give The Dark World a watch, because it is so critical to understanding––or at least witnessing another side to––Thor and Loki’s relationship.
So yes. I’m not entirely certain that I answered the actual question, but I gave it a damn good try.

Hello! I have been interested in worshiping the Norse Gods and that might not be your area but could you please give me some advice or tips? I want to mainly focus on Loki, Skadi, & Sif. Thank you so much if you reply!
Hi there! Thank you so much for your question! I’m going to answer under the cut because it’s probably going to be a bit lengthy.
First off I must say, whether you are interested in Heathenry/Norse Paganism or a whole, or would rather focus on specific deities and bring them into your own existing practice, I highly, recommend familiarizing yourself with some of the many texts associated with the Norse gods.  There is a ton of UPG (unverified personal gnosis) floating around on tumblr. In my opinion, its best to have some factual groundwork before diving deep into various hearsay you will undoubtedly encounter (including that which I am about to lay down for you). At the very least, it will allow you more of a blank slate to establish your own personal connections and associations with the gods. Grumpy Lokean Elder has a wonderful reading list [here] that will get you started. Don’t feel like you have to read everything on there, but having some titles under your belt is a great start. He also has a good list of books/authors to avoid [here] if you want to do your own research. I also recommend looking into rituals such as the Blot . Performing this rite in honor of a Norse deity is a fantastic way to call to them, give them offerings, and let them know that you wish to work with them.In terms of specifics to the requested deities, I have the most experience with Loki, but I will do my best to address the others as well. Keep in mind everyone’s connections and relationships with the gods will vary, so it’s totally fine to disagree with some of these connections and find different ones of your own!Worshipping Sif:Sif does not take a large role in many Norse texts, and as such she is mostly noted by her relationship to her husband, Thor, and her part in the tale of the creation of Mjolnir. Sif’s beautiful golden hair is one of her most key features, from this one could consider taking special care of one’s hair, or growing it long, a devotional act to Sif. In some circles, Sif is referred to as an earth goddess, as well as a goddess of growth and growing things. To honor Sif one must care not only for the growth of nature, but also to the emotional growth within oneself. Honesty, hard work, and putting ones best self forward are all honorable ways to life by Sif.Gifts for the Bride of Thunder may include: mead, beer, honey, wheat (fresh or baked into goods).Worshipping Skadi:Skadi is not a gentle, caring goddess. She is a maiden of ice, and the thrill of the hunt. She is the long dark of winter and the tenacity of those who survive it. Some say that the Jotun goddess is not overly giving with her affections, nor is she a deity to be called upon lightly, as she can be capricious and unforgiving. That being said, you may find in her a stalwart ally when you are feeling lost, or if you have need to defend yourself. She is also a deity of divorce, having notably divorced her husband Njord, and as such she can be invoked to help you through a difficult breakup, or to keep a breakup/divorce amicable. Skadi has been known to enjoy wolf skins or bones (sustainably sourced),  red wine and raw meat, but can largely be honored in not material ways. Skadi is well known for her strength and fitness, so caring for you body and health is an excellent way to live by Skadi.  That is to say, do so in whatever ways you are able, this is not a claim exclusively for the able-bodied. Skadi was said to be the one who showed mankind who to makes skiis and snowshoes, so if you are in a place that experiences snow in the winter, these can be excellent ways to bond with Skadi. Even if you are not in a snowy climate, spending time in nature will also be a fitting devotional act. Some claim that visiting or donating to wolf sanctuaries is yet another way to honor her. An important thing to note is that many who work with Skadi acknowledge that she can be “difficult” to interact with. Call to her with red wine in winter, be truthful and straightforward with your intentions, and do not place her altar anywhere near Loki’s. In fact, due to their history it would be best not to conduct business with Skadi anywhere near the same space as you do with Loki. Overall, do not lose hope if you do not get an immediate response from the Huntress, it may take much patience and perseverance, not unlike hunting itself. Worshipping Loki:There is quite a lot of information circulating about Loki and what it means to worship him. You will some information that sounds fitting to you one day, and then a moment later find completely opposing claims from a shocking number of people. When you consider Loki, the trickster, the shapeshifter, the doer of good and the doer of evil - this confusion somehow makes sense. He is difficult to define, as you will find when working with him, but I will do my best to pin down key points for the sake of an introduction. He is a fire god, and the god of mischief, and is occasionally associated with the heat of midsummer. In recent times, he has begun to be acknowledged also as a patron deity for outcasts, minorities and queer/gender nonconforming folk. In many stories involving Loki, he does get himself into his fair share of trouble, but as you read of him you may find that often he is also the favourite scapegoat of the Aesir, even in situations he is simply trying to help. This sentiment is one that may echo in the hearts of outcasts and those left to the sidelines of society, much as he is.  To honor Loki, you may spin as many tall tales as you like, but must never lie to yourself. He will know, and he will test you. He is a god who will force you to make (occasionally selfish) decisions you do not want to make, but one that will ultimately be better for you. Practice emotional self care, and do not suffer for the sake of others unnecessarily. That is how to live by Loki.Gifts for Loki will vary based on who you ask. I personally find he is partial or mulled wine, cinnamon scents or baked goods, fox furs and bones ( sustainably sourced), crow feathers, as well as songs, poetry, or art and crafts that you make for him. Fair warning that Loki has been known to wreak havoc with my guests if they do not also bring him gifts before they stay for any extended period of time. Furthermore, I highly recommend looking into the Loki-speciffic ritual known as “Bowl Holding”. This meditative devotional act, in which you take the place of Sigyn holding the bowl over Loki’s head, is one of the best ways to contact and bond with both Loki and Sigyn, if you so choose. I have personally worked this ritual into Blots from Loki, and found great success in establishing contact. Overall, Loki is not a difficult entity to contact, but his manner of response can be cryptic, confusing, and sometimes an outright joke. Persevere through his teasing, and you will find an ally who will stand by you even when the whole world has turned its back. You may feel Loki’s presence with you when you have a streak of bizarre luck out of nowhere, or in the knowing smirk and flashing green eyes of an unexpectedly kind stranger who disappears as soon as you notice him. You may feel the presence of someone sit behind you with the aura of an old friend, but when you turn, no one is there.-I believe that’s all the information I have for the time being, but if you have any further questions feel free to send them my way! Any corrections or additional information anyone can provide on Sif and Skadi is greatly appreciated!

besides immortal thor are there any other comic depiction of loki you despise?
You mean "Ultimate Thor"? I went on a huge rant on that comic run.
I generally despise "Evil from Birth" narratives. Or the "we were right to torture you" kind of punitive justice. So that would be most of the Thor comics. The thing is, I don't think I hate comics!Loki, I like comics!Loki out of spite. Because the writers didn't want me to like him, but the narrative gave me bad vibes.
CW: Transphobic dogwhistles
I'm torn on Lady Loki because I find Loki interesting during that run (I love the interactions with Dr. Doom) and therefore don't hate them, but I FUCKING HATE that they wrote Loki stealing Sif's body. I hate how it's "justified" by dudebros and pseudo-feminists with "it's an allegory for rape" as if there hadn't been any rape in Thor comics before. The whole body thief thing is actually a transphobic dogwhistle in the same way that Silence of the Lamb's Buffalo Bill was: "A man wearing a woman's body/skin to seduce and manipulate other men." Can we get that retconned into Loki just shapeshifting rather than stealing Sif's body?
NVM, I KNOW WHICH RUN/DEPICTION I FUCKING HATE AS MUCH AS ULTIMATE THOR! It's Thor: Son of Asgard!!
CW: Sexual assault, magical roofies, Karnilla being a pedo, Loki being a creep, Amora and Sif also being creeps
I hate when Loki's written as "the creepy nerd lusting over the popular hot girl" (comics!Sif) or abusive/rapey husband (comics!Sigyn). Which is a bunch of comic runs. Like so:
Tumblr media
I think the writing on "Son of Asgard" is terrible/cheesy(they have a chapter called "The Warriors Teen" *eyeroll*) and it's full of rapey plots. Loki is rapey (with Sif and colludes with Amora). Amora is rapey (with Thor). Karnilla is rapey (with Loki). Even Sif is rapey! (with Thor).
The plot is stupid. They go on some mindless quests as glorified poachers because Odin told them to do so, and relish in torturing and killing a poor dragon that was just minding its own business, among other things. Sif and Balder whine about Thor not giving them a say on agreeing to the quest despite following him over there. Fucking jackasses. Meanwhile Loki is doing stupid magic bullshit to impede on their quest from afar, justifying Sif's suspicions and hatred of Loki that would otherwise seem unjustified and ridiculous. IDK I hate when they justify over-the-top suspicion of "Loki told the dragon where we were" rather than "We were actively seeking the dragon for its scales because we're poachers." It's also used to justify over-the-top punishments for Loki with evil monologues and thought bubbles or lazily written magic bullshit. It also makes Asgard seem incredibly incompetent and stupid.
Tumblr media
My thoughts exactly, Thor:
Tumblr media
I also dislike how Sif is written. She's "masculine" but in the ways cishet men would find "hot". A scantily clad warrior with the supermodel physique constantly contorting in weird ways. Her personality revolves around her obsession with Thor and her suspicion/hatred of Loki. It's a crime to write a warrior woman so heterosexually. They made her go off about how she wishes to be gifted with a JEWEL from the shitty sand place. So, they all get swallowed by the sand (and Loki too because he was a dumbass and materialized in the location). They escape by not feeling anything because there's weird baby crystal things that seek emotions. Loki is captured by Karnilla restrained by a bunch of creepy hands in creepy places, and Karnilla kisses a teenage Loki. Loki absorbs her magic through the kiss and escapes.
Tumblr media
Loki refuses to help Karnilla out of love for Odin. I'll admit this is kinda cute and can't believe they actually gave him a redeemable trait:
Tumblr media
Thor just won't give up on those damned quests. It's ridiculous! Priorities!
Tumblr media
Ridiculously, Karnilla antagonizes Thor by turning a whole lake into sand. An adult woman beefing with a bunch of teen poachers. He takes some sand from the lake and goes back to Asgard to find it under attack. Thor and co save the day, only for Thor to be shot with an arrow by Karnilla. Karnilla and Odin fight. Odin takes pity on her and spares her. Thor is saved by "the power of love" aka Sif's tears.
Tumblr media
Karnilla takes Loki hostage:
Tumblr media
Balder tries to sacrifice himself for Loki. Karnilla is conveniently weirded out by such a selfless act and vanishes. Odin makes a sword out of the shit they got from the quests, and hands it over to Balder for his brave sacrifice.
Frigga damn... "only son"...
Tumblr media
Volstagg is sexist to Sif and Sif is fatphobic to Volstagg... damn these comics have a fatphobia problem among other things...
Tumblr media
Sif beats his ass. Then challenges Thor who pulls her by the hair and wins (for a warrior, Sif is dressed in very inconvenient ways). Everyone is like "yes Thor, you beat the ONE GIRL" and Sif gets angry and broods.
Tumblr media
We cut to Loki's schemes and hate of Sif:
Tumblr media
My thoughts exactly, Amora. The cishet writers fumbled on writing these two (Sif and Loki). They should have been GNC queer besties.
Tumblr media
When people tell me Loki was not queer-coded before the whole bodytheft subplot:
Tumblr media
Amora and Loki plot against Sif because Amora wants Thor for herself and Loki wants Thor out of the way. Thor attempts to console Sif. They're about to kiss when Amora interrupts them, calls Sif a slut, and Sif bitchslaps her.
Thor breaks up the fight and tells Sif there was no need to bitchslap Amora. Sif gets angry and leaves. The next day, there's a new female student in the warrior training class, Brunhilde. Sif remarks that "She had to be blonde." Lol.
They show Sif's backstory as a former blonde. Loki cut her hair out of jealousy that she was in love with Thor. He regretted it and got her replacement hair. However, the hair turned from blonde to black and "marred" her beauty.. Thanks, I hate it and it makes me uncomfortable... Sif is insecure of her black hair and jealous of the other blonde girls at schools.
Tumblr media
Brunhilde wonders if Thor has his own special weapon because Balder got one in the previous issue. Thor says not yet, but one day he will when he's worthy. Sif takes offense because she's jealous of Brunhilde and bitchslaps her like she did Amora. A very male-gazey fight ensues, and Sif gets yanked by the hair once again. Sif just cut your damn hair. Sif gets in trouble for starting shit and gets told to use the facilities at the sorcery school to keep them from fighting again. Amora shows up and plays with Sif's insecurities, but seriously, she has a point in Sif resorting to violence way too often and easily. And I am being made uncomfortable by "dark hair and deeper tan on a woman=masculine" in this comic.
Tumblr media
Sif and Loki conspire to magically roofie Thor with a magic mirror.
Tumblr media
Sif gets the mirror.
Tumblr media
Amora petrifies Sif (so that she watches), and steals the magic mirror from her, using it to make Thor fall in love with her. Loki very creepily frees Sif from her spell and confesses she wanted to see Sif's heart broken because he hates how Sif can "See through him." I thought he was going to do much worse because it looks bad, the way he holds Sif, when I first read this.
Tumblr media
Sif goes straight to attacking Amora in a male gazey fight again, and Thor breaks up the fight and shames her for starting shit so often. Brunhilde finds the bag that held the mirror, and asks Sif about it. Sif confesses she wanted to use the mirror on Thor because she was jealous of Brumhilde.
Tumblr media
Loki and Amora can't return the mirror without the pouch. Loki is about to be like "Lol nothing ties me to this crime." But Brunhilde and Sif catch them and tell them they have the bag. They say they'll give them the bag if they revert the spell. Brunhilde breaks the mirror, Thor is no longer under the spell and is hurt because he expected that from Amora but not from Sif. Frigga tells Sif that the mirror doesn't count and Thor still has his kiss virginity intact. Sif apologizes to Thor and they kiss.
Then Thor's trying to lift Mjolnir, and lifts it a little off the ground. Thor goes see the Norns to see what stands between his faith. I don't get it. Comes back to Asgard under attack and Sif being kidnapped by Storm Giants. Thor lifts the hammer with the power of love and goes to rescue Sif.
The cover for the next issue makes Thor look like an anime boy:
Tumblr media
Thor collapses a bridge some giants were on, and they fall. He yeets himself with the hammer into the castle.
Tumblr media
Thor kills a bunch of giants, and the comic makes a callback to Sif's introduction where Thor saves her from Hela. Here, the giant struck a bargain with Hela to gain immortality, exchanging Sif for it.
Tumblr media
He finds Hela, who is pissed Thor's escaped from her grasp before.
Tumblr media
This reminds me of Thor Ragnarok:
Tumblr media
Hela may not be Odin's daughter here, but this has Thor Ragnarok vibes:
Tumblr media
This echoes Sif's first appearance where Thor offers his own life in exchange for hers.
Tumblr media
Hela warns Thor that they'll meet again. Sif and Thor kiss and fly away.
Lol. I am such a hater I ended up prioritizing this ask over other posts.

Okay, then.
Let's talk about character tropes.
The difficulty with adding a new character to an established universe in the way that I have with Sigyn is balancing the character that you want to write with how the universe already works, and how you put them in there without breaking the universe. That last bit is key-- I don't want to break the universe that I'm writing in. Sigyn is the fourth character I've had this experience with, she's just the first I've posted for public consumption.
Also, just as a caveat, I consider Sigyn to be a different type of character from, say, Mallory Starling from my "Take On Me" series. Mallory, while a major supporting character, is still only a supporting character, and doesn't effect the narrative of the source material in the way that Sigyn does. When I say this is the fourth character I've done this with, I mean specifically rewriting canon narratives to add in a character that was not originally present. I will not be taking questions about the other three characters at this time, though I will give you the fandoms (Teen Titans/DCAU, Avatar the Last Airbender, Star Wars). Additionally, what I'm saying about "not breaking the universe" is a goal that I have for myself, you do you when it comes to what you want to write.
This all being said, there are three areas that I consider when breaking down a character into tropes. These are: Appearance, Personality, and Dynamics. Basically, what they look like, what they are like, and how they interact with others.
Here's a few key tropes for Sigyn.
Appearance
I've mentioned before that Sigyn fulfills the trope of "Fairest of them All" and how that affects her story. To get more specific about what she looks like, I feel like I have pretty well explored the "Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold" trope with Sigyn. Sigyn is pretty much my only female MC with blonde hair, so I'm really getting into it. The idea of the trope is a character with blonde hair who is purely good and wholesome. TV Tropes actually lists Thor under this trope, as well as Frigga. In the original myths, this was Sif, which is why the hair cutting and the golden wig and stuff.
With Sigyn, I play with this a lot. She starts off playing this pretty straight-- in the first Thor film, she's pretty and blonde and definitely good, just misguided. She does the right thing in the end, even if it costs her. In The Dark World, she completely subverts this, but uses the appearance of it to trick everyone around her into thinking she is still this. It takes until Endgame for her to really strike a balance between who she is and who she appears to be, but she is still the same girl who wants to do the right thing, and that part of her appearance reflects that.
Personality
When trying to put together a character that I could believably get to not only fall in love with Loki, but have Loki fall in love with her, she needed to be able to be on both sides of the coin like he is. I settled really early on the "Silk Hiding Steel" trope for her, partially because of the dynamics of the group, but also because it complimented Loki's refined, but combat pragmatist aesthetic.
One of the tropes I play with a lot with Sig is the trope of "Innocence Personified". She starts out like this (sort of), in the vein of a lot of tragic heroines like Ophelia and Cordelia, and this is a popular way to write characters like Sigyn-- an innocent victim of her evil husband's machinations. It's sort of, but not entirely, the way that she first appears in the comics. But even in the comics she has enough of a spine to stand up to Loki and even Thor. She ultimately ends up using this perception of her to manipulate herself into the position she gets by the end of "The Dark World", playing off of Thor's perception that she's a victim of his brother and father's war with each other, and playing off Odin's perception that she's a pawn in Loki's game, manipulated into doing his bidding because there's no way that she could have intentionally planned something so malicious. Odin's perception persists in how she's seen by the time she gets to Earth and New Asgard. Those that know her well, and most of the people of Asgard, know what she did and why she did it. Thor is never going to underestimate her again. The only one who sees that broken innocence that's still there isn't even Loki, it's Bruce Banner. Loki always had a certain reverence for her, Thor and the other Asgardians still have lingering moments of "that's my little sister", but Bruce looks at her head on and sees an innocent woman pushed to extremes by despair and desperation. It's not even that she doesn't let the others see her, they just see her a bit differently. I play with this in the AUs/What Ifs as well-- in the "Fallen Angel AU", Sigyn does almost everything that Loki does in the first Avengers film, but people rush to her defence because Thor and Loki are very vocal about the fact that Sigyn is not like this and wouldn't act this way if she was in her right mind, a benefit of the doubt that Thor didn't give Loki because Thor felt like he didn't know his brother anymore after the events of the first Thor film and because Loki was so good at masking what the actual problem was, he wouldn't have believed.
Dynamics
Adding a new character to an established group can throw off the group dynamics wildly if not done with surgical care and precision. It's not easy, and I didn't want the narrative to bend around Sigyn too much. Again, trying not to break the story here.
With Thor and Loki, she rounds out a lot of common trio tropes. She's the "friend of the opposite gender" in the "Three Amigos" trope, she's the Ego to Loki's Superego and Thor's Id, she's the beauty to Loki's brains and Thor's brawn, she's the fire in the "Fire, Ice, and Lightning Trio"-- there's a lot she fills in. Despite being everyone's little sister, she's also very much the "Mom Friend" of the group, taking care of everyone physically and emotionally. I also made her an archer because unless you count Thor, Loki, and sometimes Volstagg throwing their weapons (some of which are not meant to be thrown), they don't have anyone with a real ranged weapon. Three swords, but no ranged weaponry. Then again, I switch her to a sword after Ragnarok, so who am I to talk?
When it comes to the older generation, Sigyn is very much "Happily Adopted" by Heimdall. She finds a surrogate mother in Frigga, but that relationship isn't quite the same as Frigga has with her sons. I lean into the "Parents as People" trope with Frigga's relationship with Sigyn, both in good ways and bad. Frigga expected a lot from Sigyn as a surrogate daughter and Sigyn couldn't always process what Frigga put on her in a healthy manner, but in the same way, there are a lot of parallels between Frigga's life and Sigyn's, and Sigyn tries to learn from her example. The fact that they both suffered from post-partum depression is of enormous comfort to Sigyn, and helped her feel less alone. And then there's Odin. Let's see-- "Well Done Son Guy", "Luke, You Are My Father", "Secret Legacy", "Love-Obstructing Parents", "Like a Daughter to Me" (because she is)-- but what gets interesting is that the trope "Turn Out Like His Father" also applies. Sigyn is ruthless and manipulative and to some extent favors the older child over the younger, though is nowhere near as blatent about it. Sigyn is Odin's heir, as much as she is Heimdall's. (Though, not Odin's sole heir, obviously Thor's got some claim to that as well.)
But, of course, the most important dynamic of the story is Loki and Sigyn. "Beast and Beauty", "Childhood Friend Romance", "The Dulcinea Effect" (mutual), "Love Redeems", "Love Makes You Evil" (it's both, really!), "Battle Couple", "Like an Old Married Couple"-- just a whole list of romance and relationship tropes. But, and this is me getting on my soapbox, the tropes themselves don't make the relationship. The application of tropes is just writing, and fleshing out the relationship is more than just tropes. But there's also a huge amount of tropes that I use, I love tropes. ^_^
Thank you for the ask!
