Veterans’ GI Bill benefits to continue during COVID-19 pandemic - VA News
Student Veterans will continue to receive their GI Bill benefits under S. 3503, which President Trump signed into law March 21. The law enables VA to continue providing the same level of education benefits to students having to take courses online due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The law gives VA temporary authority to continue GI Bill payments uninterrupted in the event of national…

Southern Technical Institute In Chamblee, GA
This is a picture of the Tech-Lawson Apartments, which used to be on the Peachtree-DeKalb Airport grounds. Units were later moved all over Georgia and became regular apartments. They began life as dormitory housing for US Naval personnel during World War II.
Here is what I wrote in the SPSU Wikipedia entry, which was taken out because it was my original work and not research:
SPSU Wiki 8:43 PM 9/21/2006
Tech Lawson Apartments From SPSU Wiki Tech Lawson Apartments, also known as Georgia Tech Apartments, were located in [Chamblee.] Tech Lawson Apartments were used as student housing in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The structures were converted Navy barracks from Naval Air Station Atlanta, a base active in World War II that was also a WWI base that turned cornfields into barracks at the rate of 8 a day [from a historical marker on the Peachtree DeKalb Airport property].
Located on the Peachtree DeKalb Airport facility grounds on the East side of Hardee Avenue, the buildings were demolished to make room for new construction after DeKalb County acquired the facility.
Here is my crude map I made in 2006 showing buildings I copied from an aerial view of Chamblee from 1960. I also spoke with my sister, who was young when my family lived here and didn't remember much.
Tumblr media
This Hardee-Sixth area also had several huge H-shaped buildings that might have housed STI. The buildings that were the Chamblee campus of Southern Tech were also demolished, but it is unclear which part of the NAS they occupied. Some buildings to the north, in the old hospital area, were demolished to extend runway space. DeKalb County acquired the old NAS when the military decided to move to Marietta, where they could expand.
Tumblr media
My father at his desk. He was an instructor at Southern Tech for 14 years, and this was his office on the Chamblee campus circa 1960. All the instructors dressed the same way and drove VW Beetles.
At Halloween, students once carried a VW Beetle of one unfortunate instructor up a flight of steps in the gym and left it in a hall. The perpetrators had to carry it back down.
A common prank was to lift the rear end of these Beetles and the rear tires would dish in, which looked pretty funny! They straightened back out on driving.
Southern Tech probably moved to Marietta at the same time, because the demand for technical education included military and military-connected industrial needs. The Technician, STI's student newspaper, had many articles on this subject, and how what is now SPSU added many instructors to take care of the growing body of students entering under the GI Bill. Students who lived in the Tech Lawson Apartments came from mostly the Southern states, but some came from overseas. Few were commuting distance. My parents came from Edison, Georgia, at the Southwest end of our state. Some students stayed on as instructors, but most found jobs quickly.
There were two large buildings, and each wing might have had a porch on the end. They were in the vicinity of Hardee Ave and Sixth Street. The one North of Sixth Street was I-shaped, and the one South of it was E-shaped. Boxwood bushes decorated the grounds. On the aerial, since the I-shaped building could also be called H-shaped, it seemed easier to visualize it as an I if the map is oriented North-South. The E-shaped building has all three "legs" or "wings" pointing North. There is a stub on the right side of the E pointing East.
From photographs around the Spaeths' apartment, a swing set with two swings stood, a small porch with steps wide enough for maybe 8 people to sit, and the 2nd story had a smaller balcony with steps down. Another part of the building is visible in some photographs, but not enough shows to determine whether this was the I-shaped or E-shaped building. The top and bottom of the I, from the aerial view, were very long wings, but the three parts of the E were longer wings, with a little extension at the bottom of the E that would make a short wing. There must've been miles of hallways in these two buildings! In the aerial, the only place a porch makes sense is at the end of each wing [which I called a "leg" in my other page].
Tumblr media
The 'buzz cut' was very popular back then and most ex-military wore it. Here, my dad wears a necktie, but later bow ties were the fashion for men.
Tumblr media
The back of the picture shows that my dad was still in the Navy when this picture was taken. He was probably on liberty [a pass to go off-base] so he might have been visiting family after boot camp.
Tumblr media
They often went to Stone Mountain, GA and climbed up. Note the total lack of fences! When enough daredevils fell off, they added lots of them.
Tumblr media
This was one of my parents' trips up to Northeast GA. Gas was cheap, even on a student budget.
Tumblr media
This may be Lake Burton, one of the beautiful lakes of North Georgia.

One of Mama's friends at Southern Tech. This photo is probably from the roof of one of the buildings in the Chamblee campus. Mama was one of only 3 female students who attended.
Tumblr media
This is one of Dad's friends who graduated in 1945 with him and his family. Taken at Tech-Lawson Apartments.
Tumblr media
This picture of my dad and his aunt Louise shows more of Tech-Lawson Apartments.
Tumblr media
Here's my parents by the parking lot of Tech-Lawson Apartments.
Tumblr media
My favorite picture of my dad, taken by Bob Carter who also taught Electronics at Southern Tech both in Chamblee and Marietta. This shows more of Tech Lawson Apartments.
Tumblr media
Another picture, the way up to the top at Stone Mountain. Mama mentioned that with nothing to hold onto, it was a scary climb.
Tumblr media
The three co-eds.
Tumblr media
Mama and Daddy planned to open a radio repair shop together, but Mama never finished at ST.

Mr Sartain was apartment manager of Tech Lawson Apts, but I don't know anything about him.
[article from Wikipedia continues]
The interior of one bedroom shows two iron-framed twin beds pushed together. Perhaps beds from the old barracks served as part of the furnishings!

[I can't find this picture of my aunt and uncle on my parents' bed. There was also a picture of their living room with a small sofa that I can't find. Windows has a habit of losing pictures occasionally when you have a large collection. There is little on the Internet about this, but Microsoft knows this happens and it doesn't get fixed. Irritating.]
=========================== Talk:Tech Lawson Apartments From SPSU Wiki I added more information about Tech Lawson Apartments. The info about possible locations of the Chamblee campus came from a visit to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport [PDK], but I did not take notes, so this is all from memory. Also, what I mention of the purpose of STI and the job market comes from articles in a scrapbook kept by my parents, but they didn't keep the dates, unfortunately. I thought about scanning in the articles I have, but without dates, it didn't seem very authoritative.
I wasn't born yet, and my sister was very young, so we don't have a lot of collective memory about Tech Lawson. If any of you remember it, please write me! I'd love to know how students coped with all the racket from planes taking off! How could they study? Although, my father loved airplanes so much, I don't think it bothered him. He flew on PBY's at Jacksonville as part of a 7-man crew. They take off and land on the water.
We came up to PDK just about every Sunday when we moved back to the Atlanta area. Dad would listen to his portable aviation radio and watch the planes. We all enjoyed that, but now I wish I'd asked him more questions about his time at STI. I never knew the campus was right there inside the PDK boundaries, all those times we came down to watch the planes. He just said STI was in Chamblee before it was in Marietta, and I never asked where exactly. Mama told me the buildings were gone, and maybe I just said, oh, and that was it.
I have just found a whole bunch more pictures that show a little of Tech Lawson. When I get them edited and ready to upload, I'll be back, and you can see what I've been describing [through that tiny window the still camera opens].

Talk:Spaeth Alumni Collection From SPSU Wiki I drew up a quick map to abate confusion about how the buildings looked. Still don't know whether the three blobs at the South side of the lying-down E are the porches, or small buildings nearby, or part of the parking area, if that's parking. ASCS maps are not marked much, so there are no building or street names; you will see a city name. I did a lot of searching before I spotted PDK on them, and still didn't know what I was looking at until I visited PDK and someone knowledgeable knew where the old barracks were! I didn't get the map number, so my link to the ASCS DeKalb page isn't to the exact map. On the exact map I had to scroll through a good bit before I spotted PDK, and almost missed it, even with the runways pretty obvious…. Hope the map helps. I love 'em!

You can probably retrieve the original from The Wayback Machine.
I didn't go back to this and now it's gone, so I will add the scans I have from the old red scrapbook my parents kept. Dad was Art Director of The Technician for several years, and he had a few tidbits in that album. Here is all I have.

The Scrap Book itself.

I don't know where this poem came from, probably from some magazine or the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Southern Tech was a night school of Georgia Tech at first, so it makes sense that some things were held there.

This is a clipping from the Edison, GA paper.

On some level it doesn’t matter how many amab college athletics scholarships are taken by facetious trans athletes. The threat/temptation is there, the life-changing, class-hoping scale financial reward for certain people to be trans is on the table, and is in a zero sum game with afab college athletics scholarship hopefuls.
And people have been known to “trans” their race for college, why would you assume that the number of amab high school athletes willing to present as the opposite gender for a college education is negligible? A lot of people join the military, risking death and signing away years of their lives to get their college paid for. Why do you think that effectively 100% of amab high schooler athletes are going to think that presenting as trans for four years is more onerous than literally becoming a US Marine?
Really getting flashbacks to the gay rights era, where the talking points used to justify anti-gay discrimination were just transparently nonsensical but people just really kept repeating them.
"The purpose of marriage is to have kids so that's why we can't let gays marry"
"So, we should also ban infertile people from getting married?"
"No, because an infertile man and a woman might be able to have kids if they hypothetically became fertile so it's okay for them to get married."
????
Okay, I mean, if we're just imagining an arbitrary change in reality gay couples could have kids if one of them suddenly changed sex, I don't see how "If they could have kids, they could have kids" makes any more sense for one couple than the other.
Same with the transparent nonsense of "In biological reality there are only two sexes"
I mean... There are more than two arrangements of sex characteristics in biological reality.
"Yes but it is an indisputable biological reality that only two of those arrangements count and the rest don't."
Yeah I feel like that's a taxonomy, not a "biological fact".

Something something """canon""" age difference, modern AU where Rex actually is a decade younger than Anakin
And for Reasons, 34yo Anakin and 39yo Padme have decided to invite this Hot Young 24yo Who Just Exited The Military into their bed for a quick romp that turns into something of a longterm relationship that is sortakinda sugaring
………….just realized this makes Rex only [checks math] twelve or thirteen years older than the twins.
Which is very funny to me. These tweens are so unimpressed by the GI Bill college guy their parents are wooing. Is this supposed to be their new babysitter? A nanny? Wait, he's your boyfriend??? EW.
Such a weird age difference to have with your sorta stepkids
