Donatello remembers falling asleep. It's a generous word for dying, but that's what it felt like. Closing your eyes and just drifting off, just a feeling of contentment and peace. As peaceful as dying can be. 

It was painless at least. That's a plus if you ask him. The constant heaviness in his bones, the itching at the back of his eyes, telling him to close and never open them again, the constant buzzing in the back of his head. It all just went away the moment he let go. 

For a second he'd felt weightless. Free. He'd felt young again, had imagined himself jumping over rooftops with his brothers and feeling the wind on his skin. The battle shell a comforting weight on his back instead of the crushing burden it has become during the last few weeks of his life. He'd imagined himself jumping and landing, jumping and landing, effortlessly. Had imagined himself looking to the left and seeing Leo, keeping pace, grinning and whole. Looking to the right and seeing Mikey and Raph, happy and laughing. He'd imagined looking forward again and seeing April and Dad and so many others, standing there, waving at him, their silhouettes stark against the sun lowering behind New York's skyline. 

He'd thought "Ah. This must be heaven" 

And then nothing. 

And then too much, all at once. Like a computer going into overdrive, a hard drive rewriting and deleting itself over and over. He feels torn apart, his body rearranging itself constantly, nothing but a mist of energy one second and in the next blink of an eye a solid mess. When he has eyes and he can look down, he sees hands and arms glowing and glitching, but before he can panic or make sense of anything, he is gone again, just shadow and clouds, scattered across what his world has turned into. 

This is nothing like what Raph described. Donnie expected some mystical mumbo jumbo, thanks to their ninpo and their connection to their ancestors. But what he'd expected had been Gram-Gram and Dad, waiting for him with open arms. 

Not whatever the shell this is! 

Figures! Even in death this mystical stuff manages to screw him over. Paint him surprised. NOT! 

Time seems to be meaningless here. It feels like forever and it feels like just a second before something changes in his new world. The light changes, the texture of his surroundings solidifies. His body is as stable as it ever is, glitching and oozing with overflowing ninpo, but here and real. 

There is a figure in the distance and Donatello can't make out who it is but he knows, knows as instinctively as he knows himself, as he knows his brothers. 

The figure comes closer and they collide and Donnie feels himself rip apart AGAIN, but this time it's different. This time it's like coming home, like breathing in after years of holding it all in. 

And then there is nothing and then there is a lot again. Not too much this time, just the right amount. But confusing and dizzying. Donatello is still not quite back yet, still feels alien to himself, but he's as whole as one can probably be after dying. 

There are many new sensations pressing down on him. All of it familiar yet unfamiliar. The ninpo of his brothers, but much too young. The familiar energy of Casey Jones surrounding him, in contrast older and much more burdened than it should be. 

But no time to panic. Assess and analyze Donatello, it's what you do best. There will still be time to freak out once you have figured out what the hell is going on. 

"You know, I think I might need to invent a new scale to rate this rescue experience."

I am sure either I or someone else mentioned this like a year ago(I thinks it was @/000marie198 in a longer post) already but I will never be normal about Nine being the only character that has had anything to say about Sonic but not once mention the hog being uselful to him.

While yes Nine does have somewhat of a possessiveness streak ("Shadow thinks he can take Sonic away from me!?" 🤨🤨) Every other character in this show is like "Oh yea he's[sonic] fast and strong, we have to get him to join our resistance since he'd be a perfect asset/we can throw him to deal with the "monster" that's starving us/have him get the shard and then slam a wooden mallet into his face as a thanks for it/take him with us and have him scrub the deck/use him to get me beauty back" etc etc and only the few that got the space for some genuine development got to see eye to eye as friends with Sonic, but that was way later.

One major thing is, Nine doesn't like people. In any capacity. And while he does work alongside them if it's beneficial for him in getting tf away from them (as shown with the resistance), he doesn't stick out his neck more than necessary in any given situation (unless you're a hedgehog with blue hair and pronouns that has saved his life a couple of times. He might just consider it)

Their first meeting ends with Sonic saving Nine's life which obv derailed every other experience he's had with people thus far and gathered some immidite fondness and attachment, softening Nine's isolated walls. This then allowed for his curiosity abt Sonic's weird energy to overtake and he made the very vital inhibitors Sonic would have big trouble navigating the Shatterverse without. Nine also didn't ask for anything in return, or even alluded to Sonic being indebted to him for them at all.

A second later when Sonic runs off, Nine tries to usher him back in and away from the prying eyes of the Council, except it's too late and they're snatched.

Now this could've been mostly the aforementioned curiosity and desire to study the blue guy under a microscope since he was so out of place here, but either way at this point Nine was already attached.

And when Nine gets to talk about the hedged hog?

It's all just a boast of genuine compliments of him as a person, not what he could be used for. Yes, Sonic is fast and strong but also so fucking cool and if you kick him down seventeen times he'll get up at least eighteen more.

And while the consequences of Nine's "uncaring" demeanor slipping got a little hurdle thrown their way (sorry Beepo I love you) it all comes out of genuine deep admiration of Sonic as a guy. So obvious even Eggman called it out.

Realistically, Nine didn't need Sonic's help with anything regarding the Grim and his idea of a perfect home there. He could've escaped the council at any point and shaped the Grim into whatever. The only thing Sonic did was get him to the shard and spark the idea. Nine worked with the idea of including Sonic not because he needed him, but because he wanted him around.

All this to say, Nine sees him for what Sonic truly is, even if not fully understanding his morals and priorities in life, down to calling out his suicidal heroism tendencies.

This makes Sonic (unintentionally) undermining the very foundation of Nine's existence and projecting Tails over him hurt all the more, I think
