Page 1 & 2. --- Four Arrests Made as Others Make Getaway-Peace Efforts Under Way ---- MEN TO BE CANVASSED ---- (Canadian Press Despatch.) Stratford, Oct. 4. - An attempt to cripple a box car in which radio cabinets were being loaded at the McLagan Furniture Company plant today was thwarted by police after a raiding party of 18 furniture strikers or sympathizers had made a surprise attack on the company's property. Four of the "raiders" were seized by police as the others made their get-away through near-by fields. Charges will be laid against the four men, police stated tonight.

Following the edict of the radio manufacturers after fire had damaged a carload of cabinets at Kitchener early today, carloading started simultaneously this afternoon at the Preston-Noelting and McLagan plants. The radio manufacturers had declared they would have removed to- day every bit of work they had placed in Stratford and would immediately cancel all future orders. They claim the burning of the car was aimed at the radio manufacturers, and not at the Stratford furniture manufacturers, against whom the strike is being waged.

City and Provincial Police stood guard at the Preston-Noelting plant, but the small crowd was quiet. At the request of the management no police were stationed at the McLagan plant, but they were subject to call.

"Spot" the Car. As operations progressed at the factory, however, a raiding party entered the property, some scaling and others crawling under a high board fence surrounding the plant. Unseen by the carloaders, they crawled under the loading shed and commenced pushing the car out of the siding. But before doing so the waste had been removed from the axle boxes of the car and cinders substituted, the intention, ap- parently, being to cause a "hot box" when the car got under way. A white rag was also spiked to the top of the car, police believing this being placed to enable strikers to "spot" the car.

As the car began to move down the siding a hurried call was sent for the police, and on their arrival the raiders made a break. Four were arrested. Following the burning of the box- car at Kitchener early today, extra precautions are being taken by the Canadian National Railways tonight and railway police officials are maintaining a strict guard.

With the removal of the car from the Preston-Noelting plant, all the radio cabinets have departed from there. The McLagan plant still has a few on hand, which will be sent out by express, probably tomorrow. Police were on guard at both plants tonight.

Leaders of the Chesterfield and Furniture Workers' Industrial Union, which called the men out, denied any connection with the fire at Kitchener. Isadore Minster, organizer of the Workers' Unity League, parent body of the union, suggested the manufacturers had been responsible for the fire in order to win public support. Rioting Not Anticipated.

While there seems little danger of rioting such as characterized the strike at the Swift Canadian Company plan; last week, the strike of the furniture workers is by no means concluded, employers and employees seeming as far apart as when the strike started three weeks ago. One manufacturer estimated more than $50,000 in wages had been lost to the men since they walked out.

The manufacturers still express willingness to negotiate with their own employees, but refuse to recognize the union. Among many of the men it is known there is a feeling to get back to work. Meetings are being held among those so inclined, and petitions are also being circulated for the signatures of those who wish to return. Provided these are sufficiently signed, the various managements may be approached, irrespective of the union, and a resumption of activities in part at least, take place.

No Identity of Firebugs. Kitchener, Oct. 4.--Intensive investigation by Kitchener and railway police tonight had failed to reveal the Idervlity of the incendiarist who, in the early hours of the day, fired the contents of a radio-cabinet-filled box-car in the Canadian National freight yards here.

The only clue to aid them in their search for the man responsible for the blaze and indirectly responsible for loss of close to $100,000 to Stratford furniture manufacturers was the lower half of a jar which had contained the gasoline thrown over the car before it was ignited.

The radio cabinets had been loaded into freight cars in Stratford yes.er- day from the strike-crippled factories there, and were en route to Toronto. The train stopped here, and while some of the cars were being shunted, the car carrying the cabinets and panels was fired.

Police found the seal on the door of the car had been broken off, gasoline had been sprayed over the contents, and approximately a third of the machine frames inside were charred. It is thought the work was done by strike sympathizers who rode on the roof or bumper of the car from Stratford. The car was unattended in the yards at the time the fire broke out, the other cars being shunted by the train crew. Police and firemen hurried to the scene, and were able to confine the flames to a small part of the car.

Faded paint covered the chipped paneling, and overgrown vines crept up the sides of the house. The thud of Billy’s car door slamming shut caused a small critter to scurry off the porch.

After thirty-some hours of virtually-non-stop driving, everyone was exhausted and wanted nothing more than a good night’s sleep. But as the head of the household aptly reminded them, their new home was empty. They couldn’t collapse into a bed that wasn’t set up yet or press their heads into pillows that hadn’t been unpacked.

Billy glanced around, taking in his new surroundings. Flickering streetlights gleamed down on the fractured sidewalk. Small houses similar to his lined the street, all of them identically dead. 

Except for one.

In the house next to his, a light clicked on in a tiny room. The silhouette of a girl carrying a basket on her hip appeared. He watched as you placed the basket on top of a counter and started removing articles of clothing from it, then dropping them into what Billy assumed was a washing machine. Despite the chilly October air, someone had left the window open. You hummed a soft melody, which carried on the breeze to Billy’s ears. Your graceful, fluid movements mirrored those of a ballerina, the song to which you danced light and dreamlike. It was the sort of sound a person could get lost in, and Billy did-until the bark of his father bit into his trance.

“Billy! Get your ass over here, and unload these damn boxes!”

Regretfully, Billy stopped watching the pixie of a girl to help his father. He spent the next hour dragging heavy furniture into the house while his dad “supervised.” After sliding the last box into the living room, Billy collapsed on the front step, his face drenched in sweat and muscles aching. When he looked toward your house, darkness had consumed it once more, and you were long gone.

Billy, Susan, and Max spent Saturday unpacking boxes and reassembling furniture. (Neil had helped for about thirty minutes, but as soon as his easy chair was set up, he became useless.) Throughout the day, Billy peeked out the window whenever he could, hoping to steal a glimpse of you. Once, he spotted you walking your dog down the sidewalk. Another time, you were sweeping the porch. It wasn’t until that evening, however, when Billy was taping posters up on the walls of his new bedroom, that he was able to see you for more than a few seconds at a time.

The room across from Billy’s had been dead all day. Billy didn’t think much of it; he figured your family probably used it for storage or something. But then, a switch flipped, suddenly illuminating the space with color. To be more, accurate, actually, it illuminated the space with yellow. Everything-the pale walls, the sunflower-printed quilt over the bed, the painted dresser-everything in the room was coated in different shades of yellow. It might have made him want to vomit if you hadn’t appeared in the doorway, shifting his focus from the horrid color scheme of your bedroom to the princess who inhabited it.

He watched for several minutes while you paced around your room, ponytail swinging behind you. You brought one nail up to your lips to chew on it; clearly, something was bothering you. Eventually, you flopped onto your bed and reached for an object on the bedside table-a dandelion-hued telephone. To Billy’s surprise, he was able to make out the words you spoke into the phone-probably because of your bad habit of leaving windows open.

“Hey, Darcy. It’s Y/N,” you said. 

Y/N. What a nice name.

“Yeah, so I’m calling for advice...Apparently, we have new neighbors, and-I don’t know if they’ve got a son, Darce! My mom just mentioned at dinner that someone by the name of Neil Hargrove bought Mrs. Chesterfield’s old house...Wait, you recognize that name?” 

You listened for a moment, then shot up quickly.

“No way,” you said, almost too quietly for Billy to hear. “Wait, hang on, Darce. It’s really cold in here-I must have forgotten the close the window this morning.”

Billy dove towards the floor as you rose from your bed. Gentle footsteps padded across carpet. Then, there was a faint click of glass and the jerk of curtains being pulled. When Billy peeked out his window again, he could only make out a shadowy figure holding a rectangle up to her ear.

“You know, Billy, you’re a lot of things, but I never took you for a Peeping Tom.”

A wiry redhead stood in the doorway to his room, a smug smirk on her lips.

“Buzz off, Max,” Billy said, slamming the door in the know-it-all’s face.

Sunday morning.

After stirring out of bed, Billy headed towards his window. He squinted at the room opposite his in the bright sunlight, but there was not much to see. The house was still motionless, lifeless-the curtains still drawn over the window. He had no idea what time it actually was. His alarm clock read 9:32, but that couldn’t have been right. Neil never would have let Billy sleep past 7:00 for fear of him wasting the day away like a lazy bum. Finally, Billy remembered: Today, the elder Hargrove started at his new job.

Billy pulled on a t-shirt and a pair of jeans before stumbling into the kitchen, still half-drunken with sleep. Aside from the television droning on in the corner of the room, the place was just as dead as the neighbors’. He knew Susan planned to spend the day applying to various jobs in town, but Max wouldn’t have wanted to tag along. Thankfully, a short note left on the counter explained her whereabouts: Skateboarding. Be back never.

God. They drag him to this stupid town and then ditch him within a day. 

Itching for a glass of orange juice, Billy whipped open the refrigerator door. It, of course, was empty, and it would probably stay that way for a few days, unless Billy made a trip to the grocery store himself. Not wanting to deal with the stares of overly-nosy fellow shoppers trying to place the new face, Billy settled for tap water.

He leaned against the sink as he tipped the glass to his lips. He downed the entire cup in one go, then gazed out the window. Across his overgrown lawn, Billy spotted a tiny flurry of motion. A small girl was making a beeline towards his house.

“Shit,” Billy mumbled. He panicked, knowing he had about a minute to make himself presentable. Billy wasted about thirty seconds making a mental list of hygenic priorities before realizing that if he kept thinking, he wouldn’t be able to accomplish any of them. He managed to gargle a bit of mouthwash and run a comb through his curls before a gentle fist knocked at the front door.

“Coming!” Billy called from his bedroom. He jogged through the hallway and flung open the door before actually halting to a complete stop.

You stood on the front step, slightly rocking on your heels. Billy first noticed that you were even prettier up close. Then, a sweet, fruity smell drifted to his nostrils, and he glanced down at the glass dish in your arms, covered by a dishrag.

You cleared your throat. Billy wondered if the strain in his voice had anything to do with the fact that he hadn’t showered yet today. But then you flashed him a shy smile, and it was enough to melt away his fears.

“Hi,” you piped up. “I’m Y/N. Y/N Y/L/N? My parents and I live next door. I, um-I just wanted to welcome your family to the neighborhood.”

Billy chuckled despite himself. 

“Well, sorry to disappoint, but it’s just me here,” he said.

“Consider me thoroughly disappointed,” you said with a wink. “In all honesty, though, it’s lovely to meet you, uh…”

“Billy,” he said, finally mirroring your grin. “Nice to meet you, too, Y/N.” He gestured to the covered dish in your hands. “What’s that?”

“Oh!” you cried in realization.

You tugged at the cloth, revealing a pastry with a beautiful lattice design sprinkled with sugar on top. Billy started salivating almost immediately. He hadn’t been this close in proximity to a homemade baked good like that in years. Not since, well…

“I didn’t know what kind of pie you guys would like. Heck, I didn’t even know if you guys liked sweets, but I wanted to do something nice for my new neighbors. I figured most people will at least tolerate apple pie, so...” You started bouncing on your heels again, and it was so cute that Billy almost forgot to respond.

“This looks...amazing,” he said honestly, then stepped back a little to allow you room to pass. “Do you want to come in for a bit? We could sample this masterpiece together.”

You bit your lip, gaze darting toward your house anxiously.

“I-I probably shouldn’t. My dad would lose it if he knew I was alone in a house with a guy.”

It was Billy’s turn to wink at you.

“I won’t tell him if you don’t.”

The corners of your mouth tugged upwards. You glanced toward your home once more before darting into Billy’s, claiming that “one piece of pie won’t hurt.”

Since York's first Viking themed pub opened its doors in 2017 it has been a very popular destination for many people, residents and tourists alike. The mix of authenticity, eye for detail and design drew in all lovers of those Norsemen to qwaff the evenings away. To some extent though it was a bit of a victim of its own success and small size, we hadn't been able to get in as often as we would have liked over the years. But in 2021 we discovered exactly just what Valhalla has been doing during the pandemic, and that was making the most amazing expansion of the bar into the two floors above. Valhalla is accessed down a narrow corridor which features a staged archaeological dig beneath a glass panel within the floor, a nice nod to the glass floor of the Yorvik Viking Museum. The corridor leads off to the tiny little individual toilets which are just as detailed in their design as the rest of the bar, solid sturdy doors and cheeky Viking graffiti but not much room to manoeuvre. What used to be the main room has now had the large central table removed along with new access through the back wall to the rest of the building. This all opens up the ground floor space making it much more accessible, which is especially important when you want to get to the bar. It's not just the capacity of the venue that has increased, so has their drinks offering, with some exceptionally good beers brewed by Half Moon Brewery specifically for Valhalla. There are 3 casks and 6 kegs supplying a quality range of local craft ales and cider at average City Centre prices, alongside their usual large range of mead, you can't have a Viking themed bar without mead of course. There is still some seating around the edge of the ground floor but where Valhalla now really excels is upstairs. Climbing the creaky wooden staircase takes you to a wholly deeper immersive experience, the first floor is mostly one large room with chunky wooden furniture, low wooden beams and swathes of real stonework low lit by large groups of candles casting their glow over mounted deer skulls and a fantastic hand painted mural. There's a snug off to one side with a large fireplace and even larger set of antlers wielded by the stag skull above. Here are more traditional chesterfield style seats if the wooden seating of the rest of the bar isn't to your liking. Helpfully there's also a little mini bar providing  a reduced range of the larger one below. On the top floor is the All Father's Hall, a stunning smaller space up in the rafters of the roof. With another hand painted mural of Odin gazing across the large banqueting table, a magical space which can also be booked for private functions. There are also more compact toilets on this floor as well and I nearly forgot the other toilet on the ground floor which is tucked under the staircase. Valhalla have really utilised every single inch of space exceptionally well. With everything beautifully handcrafted, the love and skill that went into creating this venue from what was just originally a standard retail unit with a flats above shines through. It can be a little awkward to navigate around due to the tight spaces but there's reasonable access on the ground floor if you can't make the stairs. They also now have several cleverly installed tables with benches outside on the street for a bit of alfresco drinking. Because there's more space it's also seems a bit more family friendly than before which is great because I'm sure kids will love it just as much as us big kids. ​ All in all this extension has firmly pushed Valhalla into the top tier of York pubs, somewhere that we can't wait to returns to and whole heartedly would recommend to everyone. It's not just some knock-off themed bar, to be honest if you didn't know the history of the building you'd probably just assume it was medieval. All I can add is get down there, grab your pint pot and quaff like a Viking in the hall of Valhalla, where the brave of York shall live forever, or at least till closing time. Skål!

Pasi & Susanna’s house is my kinda house- it has flea market style that’s colorful, and very creative.

The hallway overlooks the porch with a full room bench. Susanna once saw a picture of a colorful board wallpaper online, and since she couldn’t find a similar one, she decided to paint the boards herself. What could be better than the real thing?

The wood stove is used for both cooking and heating. The color spots on the white cabinet reveal that the cabinet has changed color frequently.

The kitchen has become colorful over the years. Some of the base cabinets were already in the house when they bought it, but they painted or covered over them with floral fabrics.

Susanna decoupaged Ikea's step stool with colorful paper napkins and finished the surface with varnish. The stool is one of the few new items in the home.

The kitchen has a wooden sofa from Pasi's childhood home.

The shelf holds childhood objects from Susanna.

There is a dining room behind the kitchen.

Susanna gave her brother a plate shelf and got a pink hostess’s closet in the barter.

I love how she put traditional fabric on this style chair, but painted the frames in pastels. 

Rough log walls were whitewashed for a softer look.

Susanna framed small pieces of old wallpaper from her family cottage. 

They went to pick up the used Chesterfield sofas with a horse trailer, which was hard to park! The color of the living room evolved in red to match the sofas.

The bedroom wardrobe is so big and heavy it was brought in when the window was removed- Four adults and two teenagers were needed.  The headboard was made by Susanna's father. The curtain hides a door that is not in use right now.

Susanna moves the furniture around so often, Pasi doesn’t always notice.

There’s also this wonderful greenhouse in the yard.

Settee: A small upright sofa that’s distinguished by its seating for two, the settee is the original name for the love seat. Styles can range from traditional to contemporary detailing. Because of its petite proportions, the settee works well in smaller apartments, in a pair facing each other, or placed within unexpected spaces like bedrooms, offices, or even hallways.

Tuxedo: Boxy dimensions, tufting along the back and arms, and arms of equal height to the back are what distinguish this style.

Chesterfield: Identified by its quilted or tufted low back and its high arms, this British design is classically upholstered in leather.

Camelback: The aristocratic profile of the camelback (also called a humpback sofa) is unsurprisingly attributed to the hump at the center of the backrest. Sometimes there are two humps, and the sofa usually sits atop four to eight exposed wood legs.

Make sure the sofa fits in your home

We’ve all heard the horror stories about someone who purchased the sofa of their dreams only to discover it would not fit through a doorway, navigate a stairway, or fit inside the room. The carpenter’s adage of “measure twice, cut once” proves similarly true when you’re dropping hundreds—if not thousands—of well-earned dollars on a sofa,, or side chairs. Follow these steps to ensure that you don’t become a cautionary tale for future generations of sofa shoppers.

Accurately measure the sofa

Measure the width, height, and depth of the sofa; taking additional measurements can also prove useful for ordering custom upholstery or for packing and moving individual pieces later. Although measurements are almost always listed online or in catalogs, we recommend bringing a tape measure to stores to verify dimensions in person. Ask sales representatives whether the sofa ships with sections or parts disassembled, or if they can be easily removed.

Measure your entryways

Survey the easiest points of entry into your home, together with any obstacles that could complicate delivery. A steep stairway, a narrow corridor, a low overhanging fixture, or a small elevator can all present insurmountable challenges, even before a delivery makes it to the front door. Pick the right sofa for your lifestyle

Once you’ve narrowed your search by style and size, give some thought to your personal seating needs. A pet owner or a family with young kids may have very different needs than a fastidious couple. Think through the following questions to help determine what best serves your lifestyle.

How will you use the sofa?

Be honest with yourself about how you’ll sit on the sofa. In retail stores, we’ve seen shoppers sitting on sofas with tables like they’re upright mannequins, which is likely not the way they would sit or lie on them at home. If you tend to slouch, a daybed or sectional with a chaise will prove more comfortable and won’t disfigure cushions (over time, slouching presses the front of seat cushions outward). If you’re a couch napper, avoid multi-cushion sofas, because they’re prone to buckle and dip between each cushion. If you prefer to sit upright while reading, knitting, or using a mobile device, the more tailored, firmer structure of a mid-century-modern–style sofa or one with an upright back will feel more comfortable.

How many people will sit on the sofa?

Think through how many people will regularly sit on the sofa, but also how they like to sit. For example, if one person likes to sit upright but the other likes to lie across with their head on an arm, and the choices ate single sofas, or two seater sofas, that’s how they should test out a sofa for comfortable width. Larger families or households that regularly host guests will be naturally drawn to sectionals. But to produce a more dynamic and flexible seating arrangement, also consider using two different-size sofas positioned into an L shape, or try a pair of loveseats facing each other.

Do you have kids or pets?

Never underestimate a dog’s, cat’s, or child’s ability to destroy your furniture. Microfiber and leather upholstered sofas are the easiest to clean and maintain. And because both are smoother, they’re less likely to be scratched into remnants by a pet’s claws. Otherwise, stick with upholstery fabrics with high stain protection and a higher rub count. Unattached seat and back cushions will make for easier individual cleaning. If your kids jump on the sofa, stick with a frame that has sinuous springs or poly-webbing supports rather than one with more delicate hand-tied springs. For families with young kids, avoid down-filled cushions, because little feet will likely deform the malleable filling every day. It’s also a good idea to avoid decorative detailing, like tufting buttons or frilly trim; pulling and picking at these will prove irresistible for some kids.

Do your floors easily scratch?

If you have delicate wood floors, carefully consider the legs of your sofa, or console tables. From experience, we know that hairpin legs can scrape wood floors. As a last resort, a well-placed area rug can keep sofa feet from damaging a floor.
