You gasped as you blinked open your eyes, sweat dripping from your forehead. You saw the dark room and were reminded that you were asleep. It was only a bad dream you had. But the dream was so vivid it felt like it was actually happening to you.

Like always.

Ever since you helped Ed and Al, all you have been dreaming about is death, pain, and sadness. Anything that would make your heart feel like it would shatter into a million pieces.

It never got better, the dreams. They always got worse. It's gotten to the point where you dread going to sleep.

Taking the covers off and sliding off your bed, you padded your way to the kitchen quietly, looking to get a glass of water to cool down. After a few sips and a few more calming breaths, you heard the sound of footsteps walking toward you. Glancing to your right, you saw Ed, only wearing pants and his hair wasn't tied. You gave him a small smile while he grimaced. "Another nightmare?"

You hummed, "Same as always. Don't worry about it too much."

"How can I not?!" Ed whispered back harshly. He was by your side in seconds, taking you by the arm and looking over your tired expression. "How can I not worry when we-- I -- am the reason you have such lucid, horrible nightmares."

His voice was filled with pain. For you, for the situation, he thought he put you in. "Ed, I chose to do what I did. And look, you have your limbs back, and Al has his body back. It was a small price to pay," you assured him, patting his hand where it clung to your arm.

Ed frowned, and then unexpectedly, gave you a tight hug. "It wasn't worth it. I can't bear to see your horrified face every time you wake up." It sounded like he was going to cry.

You hugged him back, burrowing your face into his neck, clinging to him. "I think it was worth it. I did this for you and for Al. I wanted you to be whole again. I wanted--" you sniffled. "Well, anyway, I'll find a way to get them to stop. There is some way. Probably."

Ed tightened his hold on you until he released and leaned back to examine your face. Dark circles, heavy eyelids, sunken cheeks. It made him scared for you. "I'll help. No matter what, I will help you fight these dreams."

Giving him a tired smile, you kissed his cheek and sighed, falling back into his arms. "Now, if this were a dream, I'd never want to wake up."

I noticed that there weren’t a lot of good Kimblee bots, so I took it upon myself to make my own! I couldn’t add as much into the definition as I would’ve liked due to the character limit, but I tried to make it as detailed and accurate as I could. Had to watch the Ultimate Spider-Man episode with Deadpool before I could get the inspiration to finish this collage. And Deadpool has become the 4th fictional character, whom I have encountered and can regenerate like Naruto Shippuden’s Hidan, FMA’s Homunculi, and the demons in Demon Slayer.

HMMM trying to decide if I want Ed to be the Mad Mage or if I want Envy to be the Mad Mage in my Dungeon Alchemy au.... Ed is probably more likely to trap people in a bubble Where Everything Is Perfectly Fine Forever more than Envy (who's plan at the end of FMA 03 was to straight up kill Hohenheim, and he's already a dragon). Buuuut, he's also Envy- if he had the opportunity to have what at least seems like perfection would he not take that? Also Ed as a dragon chimera is funny to me.

That "even if you're writing a non-canon pairing in fanfiction, you have to respect that these characters will probably still care on a basic level about their original love interest" post was inspired by a lot of things. But foremost inspired by any "Fullmetal Alchemist" fanfiction that tries to convince me that Edward Elric doesn't actually like Winry Rockbell at all.

Like, uh, no. Ed would die for Winry, so jot that down. Even if you're writing an AU where one or both of them are gay, which is fun and fine, Ed and Winry are ride or die for each other. They've known each other for so long. They trust each other so much. When they're arguing with each other or annoying the other, it's because THEY CARE. This is basic characterization for them.

I was amusing myself by thinking about an AU in which Ed's romantic interest is someone like Ling Yao, in which there's some dangerous situation where Ed has to choose between saving Winry (his sister figure in this AU) and saving Ling. I was immediately like, "Oh, he would FOR SURE pick Winry in most scenarios. Sorry, Ling." Which would suck for Ed, because he hates failing to save anyone, but is also funny to think about with Ling specifically, because I think that Ling would actually respect this decision more.

Unlike Winry, Ling is a combatant with bodyguards, and so can be trusted to handle himself in dangerous situations. (Which obviously does not make Ling a BETTER love interest for Ed than Winry, Winry doesn't need to be good at fighting, it's just a different skillset.) Ling is also a leader, someone who wants to be an emperor someday, and I think he has opinions on loyalty. Despite feeling grateful to be saved, I think Ling might think quite poorly of Ed choosing him (a relative stranger, even if he is a legit snack) over Winry (functionally a member of Ed's family / clan, a skilled specialist who is necessary to Ed's own combat capabilities), because Ed sure as shit wouldn't be considering future political advantages with Xing here, so it would be choosing a new love over family / a loyal friend. Depending on the scenario (it all depends on the specific situation for all of these cases), I also think that Ling might choose to save someone like Lan Fan or even Mei Chang over Ed in a lot of situations, especially because Ed would HATE IT SO MUCH if Ling knowingly sacrificed anyone for his sake.

Non-canon pairings and their AUs are interesting to me partially for how they interact with the existing canonical relationships and how they negotiate with canonical motivations. For some characters, romantic relationships are just not as important as familial ones or their own goals. Obviously, for Edward Elric, (depending on the specific situation at hand, of course) he's going to choose Alphonse over nearly anyone else.

My favorite book of the year is Roadside Picnic by Arkady & Boris Strugatsky. I genuinely did read it the first week of January, but after having it recommended to me for years, I'm thrilled it didn't disappoint. Maybe I am someone who likes Russian novels after all???

Seventh Source: The Dark Magic Symbol

In honor of Book Seven: Dark, I want to revisit and expand on analysis of the dark magic symbol, itself—something I'm always low-key thinking about, but now I'm going to make you think about it, too.

We are lucky enough to have a fascinating window into the design process for all the primal source symbols (both individually and as a set) through the portfolio of Samuel Thompson, the designer. This includes the dark magic symbol:

I've scaled up the secondary, "also-ran" designs so they're all the same size, because I do want to talk about some of them. There are several paths of development visible, and each one reveals something that was seriously considered as a possibility for representing dark magic as a whole.

It's in the Blood

So to start out, we know on some level that, during story development, what became dark magic was originally blood magic. Two years ago, when I first looked at the concept art for the symbols, the filename used for the dark magic symbol image was "blood." That was corrected at some point when the designer uploaded new images with better presentation (as one does when maintaining a portfolio), but it happened.

There's also more than enough association between dark magic and blood developed over the course of the series that it seems pretty clear that the name changed on a surface level but the underlying concept remained.

It's even visible in the designs that not only was a blood droplet considered as the entire symbol, but it was incorporated into variations of multiple design directions.

Dragons in the Dark

There's a bit of a problem when you go from "blood" to "dark," which is "how do you represent darkness in icon form?" The primal sources are ultimately elemental—you can see in their design process that a lot of it was about creating a balanced set where the symbols are both individually distinct and yet related enough to fit together as a group. Earth has the usual "do we do rocks or plants?" decision-making, but otherwise it's just... the sun is the sun, water is water, etc. But what the hell is the iconic form of darkness?

Well, apparently it's dragons, because pretty much all of the rest of the designs are a clear evolution of what began as a dragon symbol. It gets stylized into a set of wings that is then further stylized, and in combination with other influences discussed in the next section, we eventually start getting something like the final symbol.

There's one other direction kind of explored here, which is the ouroboros dragon(s). I actually wrote out a whole thing about the ouroboros as a symbol historically vs. through the lens of modern Christian-influenced western culture to use here, but really none of that is the point. The most likely scenario is that they told the designer, "let's explore some possible directions dragons" and the ouroboros designs are just something you do in that situation. Obviously you don't want to actually choose it for the final direction, because then you'll never escape the specter of Fullmetal Alchemist.

But like... why dragons? I mean, this is not an accident. The designer dragon-ed the fuck out of this shit, and the only reason to do that is "that's what he was specifically told to do." So at some point during development, there was apparently a consensus that dark magic should be represented by something related to dragons.

Now, this could be as simple as "dark magic uses the essence of magical creatures, and a dragon is pretty much the epitome of a magical creature," or something like "dark magic elevates humans to being equal with dragons." After s6, however, I feel like there are enough weird little things connecting the Celestial Order, the archdragons, Aaravos, Laurelion, the Staff of Ziard, and various other stuff that it could be... something else. Something we're not yet able to see in its entirety.

But that's something we'll have to wait to find out.

Now to return to reality: the influence of the caduceus on the dark magic symbol is a done deal. It has literally been said. Even if it hadn't, it's also just... kind of obvious.

Like yeah, that sure is a set of wings with a little knob between them and a twisty stem, just like the the final dark magic symbol and all the designs that most resemble it.

I'm not going to go over the caduceus in depth because I did that once already. You can tell I was naught but a wee, innocent babe by the way I use the words "wiki" and "confirmed" in the same sentence. In that post, I spent a lot of time digging into the associations of the caduceus and Hermes/Mercury as if that was a window that would tell us something about dark magic. It was a fun post but largely irrelevant, now—this time, we're going to come at it from another direction.

Setting aside the more distinguishing features of the caduceus like the wings and snakes, what is it? It's a staff. (Or a rod, depending on your interpretation of the distinction between the two.)

Well, interestingly enough, we happen to have another staff to bring to the table for consideration. One that's important within the setting, inextricably linked with dark magic, and with an iconic design.

Now bear with me, because here's my argument: the dark magic symbol is based on the caduceus, but in relationship with the Staff of Ziard, with either the staff influencing the design of the symbol or vice versa.

To see what I'm talking about, we can take a look at the staff from a few different angles. Personally, when seen closed and from the front, I think it already looks plenty like wings.

But if we put it in profile I can do a little overlay to show what I'm talking about more easily:

It's not strictly the most anatomically accurate setup, but stylized in a way that's interestingly similar to the stylization of the "wings" in several of the symbol designs. This could be related to the the "dragons" stage of the designs, assuming that there is some connection with the dragons, or it could just be visual influence from the caduceus itself.

We should also consider the shape of the staff from the front when it's extended (unfolded?):

The rounded rhomboid/oval shape, the diamond in the center? Come on, work with me—it could conceivably resemble the symbol, right? Though yes, I do know what you're thinking. A professional would call that "yonic" and definitely not giggle about it.

As for the twisty bit—what would be the coiling snakes in the caduceus—there's a certain iconic spell associated with the Staff of Ziard:

Maybe a stretch. But you don't get much twistier than a tornado.

Contexts and Meaning within the Setting

Now that I've chewed on my tinfoil had enough that I'll never get the taste out of my mouth, I also want to just touch brief(-ish)ly on the actual use of the symbol within the context of the series setting. Like the primal source symbols, the dark magic symbol doesn't actually show up very often. The two biggies are Claudia's spellbook and the Key of Aaravos in Callum's dream:

I'm going to ignore Callum's dream because the use of the dark magic symbol there says more about Callum's psychology than it says about actual dark magic, while Claudia's spellbook is a use that its author presumably intended to be meaningful for other dark mages.

Ignoring the garbage symbols in the corners, the central hexagonal symbol is reminiscent of the geometric tree of life diagram, which you may be familiar with if you are into either one of several varieties of religious mysticism... or anime. Let's be real, it's probably anime.

I'm not going to explain it in detail because honestly I don't know a lot about it and it's (intentionally, as with most mysticism) pretty complicated. Extremely summarized baby version which suffices for my purpose here is: the hexagonal tree of life diagram is a hierarchical arrangement of nodes and connections between them, with each node representing a distinct facet through which we are meant to recognize a single greater truth or divinity. On the cover of the spellbook, we have the dark magic symbol surrounded by smaller symbols for each primal source. This is a clearer arrangement that could be conveying the same concept—each of the primal sources is only a facet of a truer, deeper magic, which we are to take as being dark magic.

None of that is particularly important, I just think it's neat. Anyway, what I want to do now is propose that there is, as of season six, one additional appearance of the dark magic symbol within the setting context. This one:

Like... rhomboid shape, little diamond in the center, twisty stem? This isn't something unique to the Hearts of Cinder spell, it's an early or ritualistically stylized version of the dark magic symbol.

To contextualize this further, allow me to draw attention to this image from Tales of Xadia, part of a larger graphic showing a scroll that illustrates significant events in the history of dark magic:

We have a sacrificed creature, from which dark magic flows. On it appears to be carved some symbol composed of straight lines, which because of the size and angle we can't really see clearly. I spitballed a while back that it could be a straight-lines version of the Star primal symbol. We also have use of the actual dark magic symbol, which I'll spare you my analysis of since really it's just more of the same.

It's still a little bit fuzzy how dark magic spells get the magic resources from reagents, but generally a living reagent (used in its entirety) is killed and non-living reagents (harvested from a larger source) have some destructive act performed on them, like crushing. We have a spell that uses a living(?) human heart, which is apparently distinct from a human life in some way, even though the latter is not going to be getting very far without the former. For casting such a spell, unless you're currently holding someone else's still-beating heart in your hand, you probably want to be at least a little specific about exactly which heart in the vicinity is gonna get consumed. I'm putting forward that there's a way to mark a reagent such that it connects properly with the spell in cases where squishing it in your fist or whatever is impractical.

Like with a symbol, right? And what better symbol than the one for all of dark magic, the staff that may or may not be behind everything?

With that, thanks for coming to this long-ass TED Talk that was entirely an excuse to say "the symbol Viren carves over his heart to mark it for sacrifice is an ancient or stylized version of the dark magic symbol, which itself likely on some level derives its shape from the Staff of Ziard, which he is literally holding in his hands." I've wanted to say it since s6 released. I cannot be stopped.

What if I wrote an fma lust/riza fic where lust starts a relationship with riza instead of havoc as a way of getting information and riza is struggling with her sexuality but “Solaris” is safe because she’s so far removed from her work and everyone she knows and the feelings intensify and it becomes so much more than experimentation for riza and lust starts getting attached too but then everything still unfolds as normal in the laboratory with lust stabbing Mustang but when she confronts riza it’s THAT much more emotionally charged for both parties. Riza’s grief and confusion being so much more intense while lust for once loses her cool confidence. What then. What would you do then

Just finished archon quest. Childe and Skirk commentary:

Good God Skirk is so much worse of a person than I expected. I love her.

Most people I know hate her and I think a lot of it is because one, her design is too vtuber and not enough monster, which, fair, even if I don't 100% agree, and two, we were all kinda hoping for Childe to have his Abyssal Found Family and not the person probably single-handedly responsible for most of the things wrong with him. She is awful. She outright says that the reason Childe thought she wasn't very chatty was because he was too weak for her to bother carrying a conversation with him. A literal teenager.

The yeet wasn't funny. I don't think it was intended to be. She sounded bored the entire time, as if this man didn't just spend a MONTH IN SOUP FIGHTING A WORLD-ENDING MONSTER FROM SPACE with a delusion that's killing him.

Meeting Skirk has given me a whole new respect for Childe. He turned out this well DESPITE her?! He views that as a role model, and his biggest problem is seeing himself as a tool instead of a person?? This kid's incredible.

I'm choosing to view Skirk and Childe's relationship as Mom /neg, not because she's particularly motherly towards him even in a shitty abusive way, but because she was uniquely poised to Fuck Him Up how only a mother can. She's responsible for his life. She's everything he ever wanted to be. He's been chasing her approval ever since he fell in that hole, and he's never gonna get it. This kid needs better friends.

(Though, on the other hand, if Foul is anything like Rhinedottir, Skirk probably comes by it honestly? Skirk's awful but she might actually not be the worst case scenario)

This archon quest has completely changed how I think of both Childe and Furina and I'm losing my mind. This is going up with fullmetal alchemist as some of my alltime favorite media.

In Loving Memory caught me so off guard (cuz i forgot to read the tags and immediately dived into it the moment i saw their post about it hhhh)

I love the energy and comedy and seriousness and everything in their writing! it's always so fun to pick up any of their works~ Don't be tricked tho,, the angst they deliver have the same gravity ToT it's just so... augh... themadtree: The energy in their writing is just so amazing. it's very hard to stop mid-way! The dialogue feels very fun and engaging and you really get very attached to the characters because of how energetic and full of life they are. Whimsical is the best word I can think of to describe the reading experience of their work :3 They made a bunch of fun aus; their brain is just so amazing (pirate au and avatar au like broooooo) My favorite is Mors Vincit Omnia (yummy pirate au!)

StarshipDancer: one of the first ao3 writers whose name i decided to remember by heart (which means a lot considering how bad i am with names) because they are my most searched user in ao3 xD The fluff is just so addicting. The sillies and shenanegans are so on point for me, idk it just scratch this itch so perfectly in my brain. I draw a of inspiration from my skk sketches from their works actually :3!! READ EVERYTHING THEY HAVE PLS ITS ALL SO GOOD (you should check the fluff week collection augh) Without Words is one of my most reread ones... I think... I reread a lot of their works tho...

setosdarkness: let's be honest. i think everyone whose dived into ao3 skk just knows her alreayd xD she's such a kween for that, making sure we are so well fed with so much fun skk writing. Her works are so fun to read! Very comedic and has such similar energy to the gag moments and bickering and shenanigans of the anime skk for me idk why. I love how fun and unique each fic scenarios are :3 (no srsly you'll never run out of food made with so much love by athina-san)

With every word you spoke into the phone the nurse standing near you grew paler and backed away. You could only guess at the expression on your face.

That damned husband of yours.

“I’m sorry. I’ve got to go. Is that all we need to do for today or do I need to book another appointment?”

The nurse recovered from her stunned state and shook her head. “Everything’s okay. Both you and the baby are doing well. We’ll see you again next month for your next check up.”

You gathered your belongings and stood up from your chair. “Thank you. I’ll see you then.”

As you left the building all you could think about was the conversation you had just had over the phone.

It had been your brother, Maes. And of course, knowing your brother, you expected him to be calling just to rant about his lovely Elicia.

So when you had answered the phone, it had come as a surprise.

“Hey sis! How’d the appointment go? All good?”

You smiled tiredly. Your brother was always so energetic. “Yes, Maes, all good. But I’m still in the appointment so unless it’s urgent, I’ll have to go.”

“Well actually…” he paused, “it is a bit urgent.”

You frowned. That was a more serious tone than you’d heard your brother use in quite a while. Maybe this wasn’t your average “my beautiful Elicia counted to ten today, she’s so smart” call.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s Roy. He’s overworking himself again.”

You sighed. “That’s my husband. I’m guessing he’s not listening to anyone there?”

“You know him. Figured it was best if you came here to drag him home yourself.”

Another sigh on your part. “I’ll be there in a bit. Keep an eye on him and don’t let him out of your sight.”

“Right on. See you soon sis.”

As you strode through the halls of the base, you felt a presence fall into step beside you.

“Hello ma’am. Are you Mustang’s wife?”

You turned to look at the figure next to you. It was Edward Elric. Looking behind you, you saw his younger brother Alphonse. It was surprising how quietly he was able to move despite the large metal suit of armour.

You mostly knew the boy through Roy since, whether your husband wanted to admit it or not, he had basically adopted the Elric brothers following the incident that had taken place at their home a few years ago. Roy had been sparse on details but you’d heard rumours of human transmutation. You didn’t pry any further after that.

You’d see the Elrics around the base a few times and had certainly heard Ed and Roy yelling at each other on occasion. But beyond a few quick greetings in the halls, you hadn’t really had a lot to do with them.

“Yes, that’s me. And you’re the Fullmetal Alchemist aren’t you? To what do I owe the pleasure? Everything alright?”

The boy seemed to be fighting with himself, unsure of what to say. “It’s Mustang. He’s overworking himself and normally, I wouldn’t give a-” he paused and cleared his throat, “I mean, normally I wouldn’t be worried but he’s going to make himself sick if he doesn’t have a break.”

You sighed. “That’s my husband. My brother - you know him, Maes Hughes - called me earlier. I’m here to take him home to rest.” You frowned, “Is he that bad?”

“He’s certainly not feeling sunshine and rainbows at the moment. I think if he keeps working much longer he’s going to get sick.”

Of course he would work himself to the point of collapse when you weren’t around.

“Thank you for letting me know. I’ll be sure to give him a piece of my mind.”

For the first time, Edward grinned. “This, I’ve got to see.”

You had both reached the door to your husband’s office. You didn’t bother with the courtesy of knocking. Instead, you swung the door open, shifting your face into a firm look of fury and subtle disappointment.

“Roy.”

The man looked up from his desk, scrambling to make himself look presentable. But nothing count hide the dark circles under his eyes and the invisible weight on his shoulders.

“Hey sis! How are you and the little one doing?”

You turned to your brother, your face morphing into a smile. “Doing well.”

You looked around at the others in the room. Havoc, Hawkeye, Fuery, Falman, Breda. All people you knew well. All people who were completely loyal to your husband. All people he was ignoring at present.

“The baby’s as strong as ever. But I hear it’s father…” you turned your gaze back to Roy, “isn’t the same.”

Roy shook his head despite the resounding responses to the positive from around the room. “I’m fine dear. Really. No need to worry.”

“Oh don’t give me that. I can see it from a mile away. You, mister, need to go home and rest. Maes told me you’re overworking yourself. Even Edward told me he’s concerned about your wellbeing.”

Spluttering from behind you. “Now hang on, I never said-”

“Brother, don’t deny it. You were worried.”

You walked over to Roy’s desk. “We’re going home.”

“I’m fine hones-”

“Sir. With all due respect. Listen to your wife. Go home and rest. We can handle things here.” You gazed gratefully at Hawkeye who smiled back.

Roy opened his mouth as if to protest again but you interrupted before he had the chance. “Roy. Don’t be a numpty. Let’s go.”

He closed his mouth and exhaled through his nose. “Alright. You win. Let’s go.”

He raised himself from his chair and swayed dramatically. Edward and Alphonse rushed over. “Come on Colonel. We’ll help.” From the teasing glint in Edward’s eyes, you guessed his offer of help was in part due to genuine concern but mostly due to the fact that he could use the situation to tease your husband in the future.

As the Elrics helped Roy out the door, you waved a farewell to the others. “Thank you for looking after him until I got here. He’ll be back once he’s feeling better.”

Assorted farewells followed you out the door.

“When we get home, you’re going to bed and resting, alright?” Your tone brooked no argument and, despite everything, Roy smiled teasingly.

“Yes ma’am. You got it.”

His smile grew softer and a warm look filled his gaze.

“You’re going to be a great parent.”

It's cold.

Yeah, this was the proof that Edward really was an idiot. He always managed to get into trouble somehow.

Of course it’s cold... It’s metal.

He didn’t try to get in trouble, though. It was like a prey and hunter. He was the prey, trouble was the hunter. And trouble was a very good hunter.

<em>It’s warm.</em>

<em>Yeah, that was blood.</em>

Maybe Edward should have been a bit more concerned about the blood, but it didn’t hurt. It was numb.

That was nice... At least he wouldn’t die in unbearable pain.

Edward’s breath hitched. He opened his mouth to gulp in fresh air, but choked and coughed. A warm saliva and blood amalgamation dribbled from the corner of his mouth.

So it probably hit his lung as well...

Now Edward had to imagine which was the worse way to go... And what would happen to him? Would he bleed out while still blissfully numb or would he drown in his own blood. The latter definitely sounded a lot worse. He wasn’t super fond of the idea of drowning, or not being able to breathe in general.

<em>Please, let me bleed out...</em>

Edward froze as he realised what he was thinking. He would much rather not die at all.

<em>You idiot... The blood loss is getting to you.</em>

It wasn’t like there was anything he could do. He had no way to stop the blood pouring from around the iron spear that the rogue alchemist he had been fighting thrust through his middle.

Edward peeled open his eyes, wiping his hand through the soppy blood that soaked his front. Maybe he was already dead. It didn’t hurt. Kind of.

Edward looked over his hand, reading his own death sentence in the blood.

He needed help.

“Not another step, Mustang!” Pendel shouted, cocking his gun for effect.

The look on Mustang’s face twisted to that of fear. Only for a second. But that second was too long. Mustang didn’t get scared. He just didn’t.

Ed didn’t even understand why Mustang looked so terrified in that moment. Edward was the one with the pistol being jammed into his skull.

Mustang wasn’t the one between them that was in danger of having their brains blown out if Mr. Pistol Guy got a little too trigger happy.

“Pendel, you don’t have to do this. I know you. You wouldn’t kill a child in Ishval. Don’t make a mistake here. You and I both know you won’t like the outcome of this.”

“I’ve changed a lot since Ishval. You don’t know me at all!” Pendel snapped back, prodding the gun harder into Edward’s skull. “And it wasn’t children I didn’t want to kill. It was the innocent people. And this kid joined the military and tainted his blood. He lost the innocent card.”

“You can’t really believe that! He’s never fought in a war,” Mustang argued. “He’s not a killer. I know you want to get back at the military for everything it’s done, but he wasn’t involved in any of the military’s actions against the Ishvalans.”

“You saying I should kill you instead?”

“That seems more reasonable," Roy argued.

“No...”

Roy snapped. He wasn’t letting his kid die.

They shouldn’t have been caught off guard. They shouldn’t have been surprised, but how often do you expect one of your allies to pull a gun on you?

Whumpee is being prodded along with a gun concealed in Whumper’s coat. No one is catching their panicked looks or questioning why Whumper is standing so very close.

After firing several rounds, the barrel of a gun can get hot. Whumper presses the burning barrel of a gun to Whumpee's temple.

Whumpee knows they need to be careful with their work or suffer Whumper's wrath, but it's hard to focus when Whumper is standing behind them with a gun digging into their friend's ribs.

Whumpee steals Whumper's gun and demands freedom. Whumper lunges forward, betting that Whumpee can't figure out how to turn off the safety before Whumper can wrestle the gun away.

You were awoken in the night by hands roughly grabbing your arms and hauling you from your hammock. You let out a scream, and someone shoved a wadded-up ball of cloth in your mouth as you struggled. 

It was your fellow crewmates. You recognized their stink. 

You were dragged, kicking, and muffled screaming up to the deck where the rain was coming down in torrents like knives. Your hands were bound, your legs tied together. A cannonball is tied to your ankles, and you are heaved to the ship’s side. 

They’re going to throw you overboard. That much is obvious. 

“STOP!”

Until…

You see him.

Edward Elric. 

The captain of the ship. One of the youngest in pirate history. 

And the love of your life.

He shoves his way through the growing crowd of pirates. His bright crimson coat had already darkened to a deep maroon in the hurricane of rain. 

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” He demands, shrugging someone’s hand off his shoulder and smacking someone else’s away as they try to pull him back.

“‘s bad luck to have a lady aboard, Cap'n.” At this, he scoffs,

“And I thought we didn’t put much stock into fairy tales.” He snaps, and you can see his metal hand curling into a fist.

You begin to struggle again, trying to wriggle toward your savior’s side.

That ends up being your downfall.

Seeing as you’re perched on the edge of the ship, only your crewmate’s hands holding you aboard, you begin to teeter over the side.

Right as a massive wave hits and sucks you overboard.

It feels like you are being pulled down for miles and miles by the cannonball at your feet and the waves pulling at your skin. Dragged down and down and down until you can’t see the bottom of the boat or Edward’s grief-stricken face. 

You feel as if your lungs are about to pop. The pressure from the water builds and builds. Behind your eyes, in your nose, under your tongue. You claw at your throat with bound hands, try to swim up, try to stop the sinking, but the cannonball is too heavy, and you are growing weak.

You hit something. Maybe a rock. Maybe a whale. You can’t tell. But you inhale out of reflex, coughing and inhaling more water as it invades your mouth, your nose, your lungs, your entire being. It feels thick like tar as your throat burns and constricts. Your lungs balloon and feel like they are bursting at the seams. Your body convulses. You couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see, couldn’t—

And everything goes black.

Edward sits with his head in his hands at his desk. The ship rocked back and forth. Usually, it would’ve put him to sleep, but not anymore.

You were gone. Drowned. Dead. Never to come back.

He had always prided himself on being a man of reason. A man of science. Ever since he was a boy and his mother passed away, his father lost at sea, leaving him to raise Alphonse with little help. 

But now?

He thought about putting the tiniest bit of thought into the same superstitions that killed you. Wasn’t there one about the Elixir of Life at the end of the world? He had no idea. After all, he wasn’t supposed to believe in that stuff.

It was only then that he realized something.

His room was illuminated by a bluish-green glow.

He got up, turned, and felt his jaw go slack.

Was this a prank?

You were in front of him!

You were glowing blue and green with your hair floating as if you were still in the water and water running in rivulets down your body. But it was you!

He whispers your name like a prayer to a god he didn’t believe in, and your eyes open.

You were crying.

“Eddie?” You murmur, and he feels his knees go weak at the nickname. You were the only one who could call him that. Not even Alphonse could call him that. 

“Wh—How are you here right now?” He barely manages over his thundering heartbeat. You take a shaky step forward, and he rushes to catch you before your knees buckle.

You’re cold. Freezing even. His hands are soaked instantly by your tears and the mysterious water that’s dripping down your body. But you're here and now. 

Edward gathers you in his arms and presses his nose to your soaked, floating hair. He doesn’t care that his clothes—which were drying slowly—are now wet again. All that matters is the fact that you're here.

“I don’t—I don’t understand… how—how am I here?!” You whimper, and his heart cracks at the sound. It’s like you can’t stop crying.

“I don’t know. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m—” 

Sorry?

Sorry for what?

Sorry for failing you?

For bringing you aboard when he knew his crewmate's superstitions?

For watching you sink instead of diving in to pull you out?

He realizes he’s crying. And your hand is on his cheek, looking at him with red-rimmed eyes and tears streaming your cheeks and dripping down your chin.

“Don’t cry.” You weep silently, and he smiles. 

“How can I not?” He asks, voice cracking, and you shake your head,

“Because you are still alive.” His smile drops,

“But without you.”

You begin to disappear, but not before you press a chaste kiss to his lips.

“I’m never too far away.” Your whisper is but a butterfly on the wind, and he’s left alone in the dark of his quarters.

Hi! Thank you very much for your request, I honestly like the idea a lot, as I myself am fond of history. Thank you for giving me so much freedom on what to write too! (I went all out on this one) I think it will be best if Alphonse is around 19/20 years old in this scenario though, assuming that Reader is over 18 to be a historian. Hopefully that is okay. Fullmetal Alchemist SFW Headcanons: Alphonse Elric X fem!Reader who is a historian

I can honestly see Alphonse and Reader meeting in one of two ways. Eighter he is doing research on the history of the records regarding the philosopher's stone and he goes straight to Reader's workplace to ask her about it personally, as she is a historian, or he goes into the local library and starts flipping through the pages of every book that might have information on the topic, and him and Reader meet there.

In the first scenario, assuming Reader works in an alchemist university/academy, he would probably feel quite shy and nervous about meeting up with her. Walking around the spacious halls of the academy, filled with top students and respected professors, he would definitely feel a little intimidated and out-of-place. Despite that, as soon as he notices Reader's name on her office door, he would take a deep breath and confidently knock - he came all the way here and he's come for important information too- so he can't back down now. He would take a deep breath, raise his head up and press on the door handle, gathering all of his confidence, filling his mind with positive thoughts:

"She is a historian, that's her job, so she must be pretty well-informed on the topic. I should be thankful I have the chance to meet her. She also sounded pretty nice on the phone yesterday. So I am sure she will be happy to answer my questions. I have no reason to be nervous. I am competent enough myself on the topic about the philosopher's stone, so I shouldn't be so anxious. I know what to say and what I want to know."

As soon as he enters her office though - mind blank. I will stick with Reader being a very well-put-together woman and respectively - her office would reflect that - tall, wooden bookshelves filled to the rim with thick, hard cover books, her sitting at her desk, positioned in the middle of the room, a cup of coffee on her left side, a pile of documens awaiting her signature on her right side, a black-ink pen in her hand and a concentrated expression on her face. Breathing in the scent of old books and hot coffee, as well as her elegant perfume, he would immidiently loose his cool and freeze in his spot, not knowing how to even introduce himself at that point. Nervousness would take the best of him. Despite that, I see the situation taking a turn - her letting go of her pen and moving the documemts to the side, signalling that her attention is now on him, and her welcoming gaze meeting his, along with a soft smile and the following words:

"You must be Alphonse Elric, correct? We had a phone call yesterday at noon. It's exactly 2 o'clock, you came right on time!"

Reader's welcoming demeanor and soft gaze would not only help him instantly relax and remember all that he wanted to say to her, but also cause a new thought pop up in his mind, the last thing he had tought he would think of her. Professional? Put-together? Elegant? Those were all words that popped up in his mind as soon as he walked in, and he was fine with them - they were all reasonable and he very much expected her to be like that. But that one, he suprised himself with:

"Oh wow, she's beautiful.."

Of course, he would ignore that last one immideately - he must focus on what he had originally come for - information on the philosopher's stone.

Despite that, her easy-going personality and friendly demeanour would be of too much help to him - not only is he relaxed enough to ask her all about the stone and its' origins, but to even ask her to meet informally - of course, not romanically (yet), but simply in a more informal setting - like a cafe.

And that is on how they meet according to my first scenario. Now, on the other hand, if they meet at a library, things would take a slightly different turn.

Now, on the second scenario, I can imagine it going eighter like this: Reader notcing that Alphonse is flipping through various books and is visibly struggling to find what he is looking for, and she respectively decides to help him out:

"Looking for something specific? I am familiar with the history section, let me help you."

Or the following: Alphonse noticing that Reader is in the same library section as him and is visibly well-oriented, so he decides to ask for her assistance:

"Excuse me, I appologise for the interruption, but could you please help me find books that might contain information on the philosopher's stone?"

In both scenarios, I see the thought "Oh wow, she's beautiful.." passing through his mind as soon as he lays his eyes on her.

From here on, regarding how he fell in love and his courting, I think after going out with her a few times and talking not only about the stone and alchemy but about various matters, he would fall in love with her pretty quickly - I see him as a love-at-first-sight type of person. But one thing that would make him fall even deeper would be her intelligence. I am sure he would be intimidated by it in the beginning, but would gradually become mesmrised and extremely attracted by how intelligent she is.

He would deffinitely take her out a few times to the same cafe, getting to know what she usually orders - what she likes and doesn't like, and would eventually ask her out on a date to a place he specifically picked out for her - for example a sweets shop if she has a sweet tooth, a specific type of resturant, a park or even on a picnic in the forest if she is into that. He would give his all on their first date.

About asking her out on a romantic date for the first time, he would definitely be nervous. He would be looking in her eyes with all the hope in the world, begging to hear the word "yes".

Now, as soon as they get together, I see him as someone who would let her take the lead. Generally I don't think he is a natural leader, but that doesn't mean he won't take the lead when needed - he willl put lots of effort into making suprises for her or taking her out to a new place, and all of that will be planned and arranged by him alone.

I am sure he would be into praise. Especially considering that Reader is a historian. If she praises his knowledge and the amount of effort him and Ed have put into their research on the stone, he would be jumping from happiness on the inside. On the outside though - keeping it lowkey, a simple "thank you" and a smile, maybe a pink blush.

I think he would become a regular to her office in the academy and his kind nature would make most of the students, professors and personal love him. Most would even start calling him Al.

Now, about presenting Reader to his family, that would mean Edward, Winrey and Winrey's grandma. I honestly see him as not telling Ed about Reader at all. Like, literally, not a word.

"Al, who's that woman you were with today? I saw you two earlier at the town square."

"Oh, she's a historian from the academy. Helps me with research."

Period. Maybe even switiching the topic to something that would catch Ed's attention to make him forget about Reader.

The reason for that is, I think Al would be worried that Edward might embarass him in front of Reader and that is not something he wants at all. Even though he knows she would accept him no matter what, he would want to look cool in front of her. So Edward would be the last to get to know about their relationship. (and would most likely be very suprised)

Winrey and grandma though? They would know every single detail. He would call Winrey at least once a day to ask her for advice on what to get Reader, where to take them and pretty much anything that comes up in his mind. He would want to be sure that he is doing everything right and there is nothing better than the opinion of another woman.

"She would know what Reader will like the most, I should call her."
