Dating Edward Elric HCs

Decided to do something fun like this. I felt in the mood for some FMA stuff, there arent enough writers out there

HCs under the cut!

-Either you confess first or you have to be SO patient.

-He’s used to being “strong” and hiding his emotions, so he will absolutely bottle that up until it reaches a boiling point.

-Either this is when you get hurt and he just decides “Screw it” and rambles, face as read as his coat

-Or it would be he gets hurt and the tension between you two reaches a breaking point, and you finally confess.

-Either way, he malfunctions and turns bright red.

-Once you pass the awkwardness of confessing, he is a very good boyfriend.

-He doesn’t get jealous, but he does worry about you when you’re not nearby

-He can’t help but wonder “What if something happened?!”

-He has nightmares from a lot of the things that he has seen and experienced

-Sometimes he wants hugs and other times he just wants to know that he isn’t alone

-He doesn’t really think about PDA, but malfunctions if you grab his hand sometimes

-Eventually, it just becomes second nature to him

-He just does things like kiss your forehead, pat your head or hold your hand out of instinct

-Doesn’t even realize he’s doing it most of the time anymore

-It makes him feel a lot better about knowing you’re there, but also feeling like he’s protecting you <3

Someone probably already said something similar to this at some point, but I want to get this out myself: I feel like Roy and Riza not getting an on-screen happy resolution (and an obstacle in them getting it ever, though if they ultimately do is left to the audience's imagination) is not only not a flaw or something missing from the ending, but actually a good thing. Not because I don't like RoyAi - I do, but because it works thematically. This aspect I find interesting when contrasted with the other major couple in the series, Ed and Winry, who get about as definitive of a conclusion as you can get (and with the proposal scene, and the family photo in the montage - the EdWin "confirmation" is pretty much what caps off the series).

 When Riza tells Ed about Ishval, and her and Roy's plan to have those who carried it out tried as war criminals, she tells him to not worry about them, but be more concerned about himself. Basically: "your hands aren't stained with blood, go and be happy, don't get bogged down by those like us whose are". And I think this sentiment applies to the romantic couples: Ed and Winry are innocent, and get to maintain that innocence throughout the story (Ed held on to his principles, primarily about not killing, Winry didn't pull that trigger), so we see them get the happy ending. Roy and Riza aren't innocent, so they don't get that conclusion. I even like to think that that's why in that conversation Riza so casually brings up Ed loving Winry. Maybe she's seeing herself and Roy in them, but unlike with herself there's nothing stopping them from finding happiness together, so she wants them to. I'm looking at this through a shipping lense, because I enjoy examining this aspect from that perspective, but honestly this applies to the ending overall. Ed accomplishes his goals, and through the final episode/chapter we definitively know that he and the people closest to him (like Al and Winry) pretty much get to live happily ever after. Roy by series end hasn't yet accomplished his goal of becoming Fuhrer, his romantic arc isn't resolved, there's still that "tried as war criminals” thing they're planning looming over. His ending is a lot more up in the air. Team Mustang not named Roy or Riza actually do get happy endings via photos, and sure enough those are the ones who didn't serve in Ishval.

also i’m trying not to get emotional over the fact that while missing 2-3 years of most relationships is negligible in the grand scheme of things, 2-3 years away from raising a toddler is huge. Fortunately (?) for Maes, he got back before Elicia could really understand the concept of death, but he still probably missed a lot of milestones. :,(

Since Ed is literally (as far as I remember) the ONLY member of the military we see NOT wearing the uniform you have to wonder if he’s supposed to be wearing it like everyone else and Mustang just does not give enough of a fuck to try and make him

Or Mustang did try to make him and Ed threw SUCH a fit about it that Mustang fully gave up and decided to never mention it again for fear of the full on teenage temper tantrum that he would have on his hands

He does probably get special treatment for being 12 (when he joined) but I also wonder if even whatever authorities were above Mustang were a little horrified by the idea of a 12 year old running around in their military uniform, and didn’t bother trying to enforce it.

That, or they just didn’t care.

-If you end up telling him about it, no matter how early/late into the relationship, he definitely understands

-He would appreciate you telling him earlier on, but he also completely understands why you would potentially wait

-Always takes care of you on rough days, and comforts you when you feel upset about it

-If someone ever questions your hidden disability, he will throw HANDS

-Similar reaction to when someone calls him short

-Alphonse definitely gets upset for you too

-If he can’t take care of you himself, Alphonse will happily do it

-You are important to his brother so you are important to him <3

-(Side note: If you end up dating Ed, Al has to approve. Its a requirement for Ed.)

-Its canon that his shoulder and leg amputations hurt when it’s cloudy, so he definitely understands pain, especially pain that isn’t immediately visible

-He gets very soft when you don’t feel good

-Will read to you quietly

-Anything to make you comfortable
