I think it's very funny that when planning shin soukoku Dazai forgets that a very important aspect of double black is power and intelligence. Chuuya and Dazai, Mori and Fukuzawa. Both have one character who specialises in planning and strategy and one who is an unstoppable fighter.

Sure their abilities compliment each other but the fact that they have one braincell each kind of means they can't work without Dazai directing them.

hi hi!! since you like kunikida, i feel like you’re the right person to ask :D

how do you think kunikida would act/show care for people around him? the ada for example.

i’m writing a fic about how kunikida silently shows his care for the agency, but i tend to struggle with characterisation so i need your thoughts. because he obviously cares for the ada members a lot, but i don’t know how to portray it in a way that’s not too “soft” or “goody-two shoes” while still making it clear that he does love these people.

Some things are canon (first few) others aren't.

We already have seen a few ways he shows care for members!!

Dazai;

-Calling daily. It's in his schedule to call Dazai. And to make sure he's coming into work.

-Telling Dazai he can always vent if he needs to.

-"You were so talented. I couldn't have asked for a better partner."

-Buys Dazai food. Also Kunikida makes food for Dazai. (not canon but hey. he would and you know it)

-They banter a lot, but we still know Kunikida cares.

-Kunikida listens to Dazai (Dazai rambles a lot)

-Also hugs. A lot of hugs. Like he just gives him hugs. Kunikida will hold Dazai and rock him, idc what anyone says.

Atsushi; (I've realized this is all canon info and not personal headcanons)

-Praise. He does respect Atsushi, especially after he saved Kyoka. (After saving Kyoka, he praised him by saying 'good job')

-Yes he gives Atsushi lectures and reminders.

-Kunikida is proud of everything Atsushi has done. He compliments Atsushi's work (Kunikida compliments everyone for their work btw)

-Kunikida trains Atsushi!!

-Also let's not forget the hug they shared during the reunion.

Ranpo; (this is also all canon..)

-Kunikida praises Ranpo often. Like really often.

-"We'll be counting on you, Ranpo-san."

-"The ideal detective— no, in fact, the ideal ability user."

-Even after learning about Ranpo not being gifted, he still acts like Ranpo is.

-They do have a close bond. Ranpo has told Kunikida that he's the strongest. Ranpo also supports Kunikida, and tells him to stay calm and act like Fukuzawa during the cannibalism arc. (This is more about Ranpo, but still it shows they're close enough to say this stuff to each other)

Yosano;

-Respect! He does respect Yosano just like the other members.

-He surrendered his own life for Yosano's. This was because of the Hunting Dogs. (this goes along with respect)

-He knows Yosano's schedule. Take that as you will.

-Kunikida fully believes that Yosano can always help him no matter the injury. He doesn't care if he's injured because he knows Yosano can help him.

-Because of that one, I'd believe that he'd do a lot for Yosano as thanks. Gift giving, hugs, whatever Yosano is comfortable with.

Kyoka;

-Kunikida is very kind towards Kyoka. He opens up to her after her entrance exam. Which we can see the differences in the anime and manga.

-Kunikida gives lots of advice to Kyoka. He does the same for Atsushi. I'd say this is because he's technically a "higher up" because he joined before the two of them.

-He has also given Kyoka a page of his notebook in case of emergency while Kyoka was trying to save Atsushi. (canon)

-Definitely helps her with tasks. If she's struggling, no she isn't, Kunikida is right there.

-Headpats!! And he gives her stuffed animals as gifts.

-Did I mention that he definitely carries a stuffed animal on him at all times just so he can give it to Kyoka? Because he 100% does (prove me wrong challenge) (level impossible)

Kenji;

-Kunikida actually knows a lot about Kenji. Specifically his ability and the way he acts with others.

-Unfortunately there aren't many interactions of the two.

-However, I think Kunikida would do everything Kenji wants. Not just because he's a higher up/ superior, but also because he has a weakness to Kenji. nobody wants Kenji angry.

-Both can easily give bone crushing hugs, so I think it's easier for them to hug each other than to hug other people.

-Yes Kunikida buys Kenji food. Yes he gives Kenji blankets for when he falls asleep. Asagiri told me himself trust me

-Kenji and Kyoka play with stuffed animals and dolls/ toy animals. Kunikida now keeps some random toys and animals with him just to calm them down.

-Kunikida also buys Kenji stuffed animals because he realized Kyoka liked them and Kenji seemed to want them as well.

Junichiro;

-Canonically, they do trust each other!

-I think Kunikida treats him to food a lot. Just as a little treat.

-Also praise. If we know he canonically can give praise then he should praise Junichiro for his hard work.

-Junichiro likes physical touch (my opinion) so I think Kunikida gives him hugs and pats on the back.

-Like you know that thing people do where they pat someone's back and then rub it? That's literally Kunikida to anyone I think. Just mainly Atsushi and Junichiro.

Naomi;

-I don't think they've like canonically interacted?

-Also treats Naomi to food. Just mainly sweets because she loves sweets.

-Hugs. The Tanizaki siblings love physical touch. That's their number one love language.

-Pats on the head for good work.

Haruno;

-They don't hang out much. But he will visit her.

-Daily check ups. He just visits her or goes to her during work and asks if everythings okay. (I think he does this to everyone, just a headcanon)

-Also headpats. At this point he has probably patted every single person's head at some point. Except for Fukuzawa (out of respect for him)

Fukuzawa;

-He has a lot of respect for him. We know this.

-Asking how his day was, making sure he's okay.

-Buying/ making him tea.

-Taking him out for food or drinks, whatever Fukuzawa is preferring in the moment.

-Hugged him once. Was horrified about it. Was also embarrassed because he didn't even mean to like it just happened.

-Fukuzawa didn't mind and hugged him back. This only made Kunikida more embarrassed. Also I think Kunikida's face and ears go read when he's embarrassed.

Katai; (if you're including him)

-They've known each other for ten years. They know each other well.

-Kunikida visits him often. Normally he reminds him to do chores, or does the chores himself.

-Kunikida encourages Katai to go outside. He'll also tell Katai to try going out without his futon.

-They're very close! Kunikida knows basically everything about Katai, and knows how to help him out.

-Kunikida praises Katai. (all above canon and this too)

-Kunikida makes food for Katai. I think he does it because Katai doesn't eat healthy food often.

-Kunikida and Katai cuddle. Trust me guys (whatt I'm definitely not a kunikatai shipper hahaa that'd be so weird..)

-Kunikida tries to go out with Katai but because Katai is a hikikomori it's pretty hard to do.

-Kunikida listens to all of Katai's ramblings on literally anything. Katai will listen about Kunikida's ideals too.

-Kunikida gives Katai words of affection a lot. Katai is insecure and Kunikida knows. That is why.

Unintentionally he will headpat people at the agency. Like "Good work." and then suddenly his hand his on their head and he pats it. Not even for a specific reason, he's just did it so frequently to the younger members and now it happens to everyone.

He takes everyone out for food/ drinks seperately, just so they can have a little bonding moment.

The Great Escape (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Hehe, thought there wasn't gonna be a fic today, did ya? >:D This is a sequel to "A New Kind Of Mystery"; I won't lie- originally I wasn't planning on writing one (do I ever plan sequels? Not really jlkrejarjeajraejkrjka) but after being encouraged by the ever wonderful @intheticklecloset here we are! :D I hope y'all like it!

Summary: Poe's getting ready for his and Ranpo's vacation and makes the bold decision to leave his notebook behind. Surely he'll be fine without it, right?....Right?

“Oh…which should I bring?”

Poe was once again at a crossroad, brows furrowing as he looked between too well loved hardcovers. Ranpo and his holiday was just around the corner, and while the important things for their trip were already packed- if not a bit messy on his boyfriend’s end- he now had to decide on reading material.

“Gggggr?” Karl was curled up on the nearest suitcase, watching Poe stress with lazy eyes.

“I know I won’t be reading the entire time, Karl- I just want a few things for when things settle down.” He flipped the books over, scanning their synopsis. Oh, they both sounded good! And then there were those new books he recently purchased…

“Poe!” Fingers jabbed his sides, making him squeal with a spasm. “Surprise! I’m here!”

“R-Ranpo!” The author turned to his boyfriend, or at least tried to. Those dastardly fingers were still prodding and poking at his sides, making him curl up and giggle. “Rannananapo, pleahahhahase! Iihihih’m trihihihihying to pahahhahack!”

“Still? I thought you had everything?” The detective looked over his boyfriend’s shoulder as he kept on tickling, humming at the books. “Didn’t you read both of these like- several hundred kajillion times?”

“Huhuhuhush! Thehehehy’re clahahhahahssics!”

“Just like you! Hehehe!”

Poe felt his cheeks burn- a combination of the tickles and Ranpo’s teasing compliment. “Ahehahahahha Rahahahn!”

“Hehe, okay okay.” The detective released him. Soon after he grabbed both books, tossing them in Poe’s remaining suitcase. “When you can’t decide, bring both! That’s how I go about my snacks.”

“Hehe..heheh..I suhuhpose thahaht’s fahahair…” Pushing his bangs back, Poe reached to zip up his bag, pausing when Ranpo quirked a brow. “Whahat is it?”

“You’re not bringing it?” The detective asked. Poe knew instantly what he was talking about.

His go-to notebook; what he used to scribble down outlines and ideas for his next big mystery. It was rare for Poe to let it out of his sight- even rarer for him not to bring it. 

Poe raised his chin, squaring his shoulders. “I’m not bringing it. I promised you a holiday, and I intend to keep it.” Nodding, he finished zipping his bag, finalizing his decision. “No working for me. Nope, none at all.”

“Are you sure?” Ranpo raised a skeptical brow. Poe hoped the smile on his lips wasn’t too frozen.

“Absolutely.”

Ranpo watched him closely before shrugging, reaching out and poking Poe some more. “Okay! In that case, let’s get this vacay started!”

“Rahahhan!”

“Look at that! Oh, and that! And that!” Ranpo was lying half-on top of him, nose and hands pressed into the foggy glass of their train compartment as they watched the scenery go by. Their destination was a cozy little cottage not far from the main attractions in Yokohama. The owner of said cottage was none other than Fukuzawa himself- only mildly panicked upon hearing Ranpo’s plan to “Find a cheap motel and pray.” It was a joke of course, but he insisted upon them taking it.

If anything, it guaranteed their safety. Though Poe wouldn’t be against the idea of a haunted hotel room…

“Poe, look! Look! Are you looking?” Ranpo’s gentle but insistent prodding brought him back to current time, turning his gaze out towards the pamphlet in his boyfriend’s hands. “They’ve got a zoo around where we’re heading! And lots of gardens and-” Ranpo went silent, eyes glued to the paper.

“What?” Poe couldn’t take the anticipation any longer!

“They have a cup noodle museum!” Ranpo all but breathed, eyes lighting up like a child on christmas. “Poe, we have to go! We have to! Cup noodles are the ultimate snack! The staple of childhood- are you laughing at me?”

Poe was in fact giggling in his hands, barely hiding a smile. “I'm sohohorry! I’m sohohrry- just; you’re so cute!” The author giggled against his shoulder, shaking with barely repressed mirth. “I nehehever knew how excited you were abohohut noodles!”

“As the god of snacks, I am mildly offended.” Ranpo replied, his deadpan expression breaking into a smile when Poe snorted. “As punishment, you get tickles!”

“Ah! Ahhehahahhahaha! Whahahit, wahhahahit- Rahhahahan! Whehehe’re in puhuhuhblic!” Poe squeaked, sinking as much as he could in his chair as he tried muffling the sound. Ranpo had decided to take full residence in his lap however- making it near impossible.

“Don’t worry- no one’s looking!” Ranpo teased in his ear, keeping his tickles just light enough to keep Poe snickering. “Even if they were, you’re cute! They’d love you.”

“Shuhuuhuhush! Aheahhahaha, Raahhahahan!” He squeaked, clinging to the detective’s jacket with barely any strength. He didn’t feel eyes on him, so Ranpo was speaking the truth.

Even if they were being watched, part of him simply didn’t care. Let them witness their love on this train going nowhere.

Huh- that’d be a good idea for a horror story. Two lovers on an endless train in limbo. He should write this down-

…Ah, right.

At some point Ranpo must have stopped, for when he came back to the Detective was once again reading his pamphlet, leaning into his shoulder and getting comfortable. Poe smiled, pressing a hand against his boyfriends.

He pretended the small ache in his chest was something else.

“CANON BALL!” Sheets and pillows flew everywhere as Ranpo landed in the bed, sprawling out like an octopus as he wiggled about. “This is the BEST! I’m so glad we came- that cup noodle exhibit was amazing!”

“It was rather..unique. Who knew there was so much to learn about snacks?” Poe smiled as he sat down, resting his aching feet. Their vacation seemed to fly by- the day they got there to now has been nothing but exploration and adventure. “I also enjoyed those racoon dogs- they reminded me of Karl.”

Said racoon made an assortment of clicking noises as it curled up against Poe’s pillow, snoozing once more. Ranpo grinned as he stroked his fur, cooing gently.

It was all so fun, and Poe was having a great time. However…somewhere deep down, he felt like such a failure.

Wherever he went, wherever he turned- he couldn’t turn off his brain from work. The sights and sounds of Yokohama’s beautiful gardens and zoos made him imagine the perfect settings for his books. The secrets within the city gave him inspiration for mysteries, and Ranpo…

Oh being with Ranpo made him think of a genre he never thought he’d write. Romance.

A hide and seek tale, maybe? A man is trying to find his lover but they’re so far away. He searches high and low, following the sound of their voice as it calls out to him playfully. He crosses the oddest of people and the most breathtaking sights to find them-

Everytime it happened he reached for his notebook, only to not find it there. It caused a small panic until he realized he left it home.

Then that panic turned to shame at how disappointed he felt not having it.

It was like a betrayal, only he was holding the knife aimed at Ranpo’s back.

“Poe?” Ranpo was standing before him now, brows furrowed. “Are you alright?”

The author blinked, suddenly unsure. “I…erm..”

“Poe?” Ranpo’s eyes widened suddenly, his hands reaching out to the other’s shoulders. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

Again, he wasn’t sure. It wasn’t until he blinked that he realized he was crying. “Ranpo…I’m failing you.”

“What? Come here, come here.” The detective pulled his boyfriend to his feet, leading him to the bed. Once there, he pulled him down, down, down some more until they were laying against the warm sheets, Ranpo’s arms around his torso as he pressed gentle kisses against his shoulder. “What do you mean?”

“I made you a promise, and yet- here I am breaking it. I promised you I wouldn’t work but yet- here I am longing to write. I shouldn’t be thinking about all that- I should be spending time with you.” Poe blinked a few times, willing the tears to dry. He shouldn’t be crying- he didn’t deserve to. “I’m sorry, Ranpo.”

The detective was quiet against him, the arms around Poe strong as ever. Then he was sitting up, just enough to look down at Poe’s face. His expression…

“You know what I love the most about you?” He asked, eyes soft and lips curved in the gentlest of smiles. “It’s that you care so much about others. You want to give them your best self, even if it comes at sacrificing yourself.” He reached up, gently brushing Poe’s long bangs from his forehead so he could look him in the eye. “I know you, Poe. I know you’ll never quite turn off your brain even when on vacation. I know you’ll always be thinking about books and stories and writing- and you know what? That’s okay. It’s a core part of you, and another part about you I love with my entire heart.”

Poe wanted to argue, but Ranpo pressed the softest of kisses against his cheek, silencing him.

“I love how your mind is constantly running on creativity. I love how you find inspiration in things I wouldn’t even think about. I love how you’re so devoted to the craft it becomes real.” Each statement came with another kiss, stamping them into Poe’s heart permanently. “I love the fact you willingly came with me on vacation. I love you walked through an entire noodle exhibit you likely didn’t care for just to make me happy. I just- I love you. Even if you’re thinking about books and whatnot- you’re here with me. You’re with me right now. That’s all I want.”

Poe couldn’t find words. His throat was constricted with a lump the size of a baseball as he looked into his boyfriend’s eyes. Even if he could speak, how was he supposed to voice how much he loved him? Words aren’t enough.

Instead, he breathed out a small “May I kiss you?”

Ranpo grinned, nodding. Poe pulled him down into himself as he kissed him, putting everything he felt into it. Warmth spread across his body, curling his toes and setting into the deepest crevices of his heart for all eternity.

Beneath his hands, he could feel Ranpo’s heart racing just as fast, syncing up with his own and playing the same melody.

When they pulled away, they were both slightly flushed and breathless, Ranpo’s eyes bright against dark hair. Poe reached up, gently brushing it out of his face with a small smile.

“Hey..I love you.” Poe whispered, making Ranpo light up.

“I love you too.” He fell back into Poe’s chest, snuggling his face into his chest with a content sigh. “We should go on holiday more often.”

“Definitely.” Poe surprised himself by saying it. He surprised himself even further with how real the words felt.

“Oh?” Ranpo sat up with a grin, fingers scritting against Poe’s belly. “Did I hear you right? You’re really enjoying yourself, aren’t you?”

“Aheheahahha! Oohohohof cohohohoure I ahahhaham! Ahehahaha- nohoohow you gehehehhet toohohoho!” With a boost of strength he didn’t realize he had, he managed to push Ranpo on his side, going for all the spots that he knew would have the detective squealing for mercy. “Tahhaek that!”

“AH! Aheahhahahhha, Pohohohohoohe! Ahehahhahhahaha!” Ranpo flopped like a fish against the sheets, sending them flailing off the bed. At some point Karl jumped for safety, landing on the nearby bed table as his humans wrestled about the bed, laughing all the way.

“Surprise!” Ranpo pulled out a small notebook from his snack bag, holding it out to Poe with warm yet nervous eyes. “I know it’s not your preferred notebook, but I saw it while snack shopping and thought of you.”

Poe stared, seemingly frozen at the gesture. For a moment, Ranpo was sure he messed up.

Then the author took it in his hands, tears misting his eyes as he held it close. “Thank you…it’s perfect.”

The detective grinned, jumping forward and kissing Poe’s with reckless abandon. “Do you love it? I know you love it, you love it don’t you?”

“Ahehaha! I do! I do!” Poe giggled, pulling the smaller man into his chest. “I do. Thank you Ranpo. In fact- I already know what I’m putting in it.”

“Oh?” The detective raised a brow but didn’t push, settling on snuggling against Poe’s chest instead. It wasn’t long before he was sleeping away.

Poe’s new notebook was not used for notetaking. Nor was it used for outlines.

Within the pages were an assortment of things- photos taken on a polaroid of them smiling, Ranpo giddily next to a giant cup of noodle, Karl staring at the Racoon dog- all various parts of their holiday.

Between photos were little blurbs- Poe’s sprawly handwriting detailing each event and his favorite moments from each activity. Some were softer- a secret photo taken of Ranpo snoring against his chest kept in the “Treasures” section. Wrappers of snacks his boyfriend insisted on him trying and he ended up liking were stashed inside as well- taped in with care and cute racoon washi they found. Pressed flowers from the garden trip were carefully added, a picture of Poe with a crown of them on his head nearby.

They only took so many pages- the rest of the notebook was far from full. Poe smiled as he pressed it closed, tucking it away in his desk.

(Warning for referenced and implied torture, blood and injury, dismemberment. None of it in explicit. And Atsushi accidentally traumatising people and his self esteem.)

Mori and Fukuzawa stare each other down from opposite ends of the room. Without needing to exchange words, both knew the other was reminiscing about their last fight.

This would be their last fight.

Or rather, it should have been. Before either could charge, a flash of light burst from each of them. Fukuzawa sheathed his katana and Elise vanished.

"It seems our organisations have found a cure." Says Mori with an amused grin. Fukuzawa nods "so it seems." But he knew something was amiss, as did Mori as they make their way back to their organisations.

... Who were all fighting each other.

Mori chuckles while Fukuzawa facepalms. "Oh don't act so suprised" Says Mori clapping his hands and getting everyone's attention.

Instantly every member of the Port Mafia drops to their knees in respect. While the Agency run over to stand before Fukuzawa.

"We have been cured, but given you're all at each other's throats, I assume none of you were responsible." Says Fukuzawa, his detectives all shake their heads while the Mafia members avoid his gaze.

"Somethings changed." Says Dazai, walking over with Kunikida at his side. Fukuzawa gestures for him to carry on.

"We had a lovely chat earlier, and let's just say curing the ability doesn't make sense for any of it. Somethings changed so Fyodor has acted accordingly."

Mori nods "astute observation" ignoring Dazai looking mildly disgusted at being complimented by him.

"Are you gonna tell us what's changed, or are we gonna have to beat the answers out of ya?" Asks Chuuya, on his feet and crackling his knuckles. Kunikida steps aside and gestures for the red head to go ahead.

Dazai gasps "Kunikida! You're just gonna let this hideous slug attack me?" His partner shrugs "if it'll get the answers out of you. Hell I might join in with Nakahara."

Chuuya grins "you're his partner in the Agency, aren't you?" Kunikida nods "Doppo Kunikida, what gave it away? The stress or the urge to clock him into next week?"

Chuuya snorts "you, you and I are going to be good friends I reckon. We should get drinks some time."

Dazai watches this exchange with growing horror. "I can't believe I got shot for you people and here you are, making drink plans with the enemy. Can you believe this Atsushi? The disrespec-" He pauses, looking around.

"Where's Atsushi?"

The light hearted mood instantly drops.

"Wasn't he with you, Kunikida?" Asks Yosano and Kunikida shakes his head.

"When we left, Atsushi said he would catch up with me. I was too busy trying to figure out what happened to Katai..." Kunikida looks around, worried. "He never showed up.”

Yosano pats his shoulder, reassuringly. "He might've just gotten lost" she suggests but she's just as worried.

Kyouka pulls out her phone "the trackers near here" she says, trying to locate it.

Chuuya looks at her in suprise "you put a tracker on him?" Kyouka nods "two, one on his badge and one sewn into his shirt. He gets kidnapped a lot" she explains.

"Does Atsushi know about the trackers?" Asks Ranpo, his voice quiet. He has been uncharacteristically serious since Fukuzawa got infected. Fukuzawa looks at him concerned.

If Ranpo is this serious it means something is wrong.

"Just the one on his badge, why?" Asks Kyouka, finding the signal... In a nearby bin. She frowns, pushing it over and out spilled Atsushi's neatly folded uniform, his Agency badge and his phone.

Ranpo grimaces, picking up Atsushi's shirt and ripping out the tracker. Unlike the one on his badge, it's still intact. "That's why..." He whispers, clenching his fist in anger.

Fukuzawa puts a hand on his shoulder in silent support. Ranpo takes several deep breathes. He needs to be calm for this. "Dazai, what does Fyodor want more than anything?"

He knows. He knows but he needs to be sure. He can't afford to be wrong, not now.

Dazai tilts his head, confused by the subject change. "The book, he wants the book." As the words leave his mouth, he freezes in place. "Are you saying Fyodor took Atsushi?" He asks, completly serious.

Ranpo shakes his head, holding up the tracker. "No, I'm saying Atsushi went to him. See this, the tracker he didn't know about is fine. While the other is destroyed."

Fukuzawa frowned "Why would Atsushi go after Fyodor, and on his own?"

Ranpo puts on his glasses, it all makes sense and he hates it.

"Atsushi wanted to find another solution to end the fighting, one that didn't involve Mori or the President being killed. Because he knew what that would lead too."

That boy, that stupid, kind, selfless boy.

"Fyodor wants the book more than anything. And Atsushi knows that he is the guide to it. So he offered himself in exchange for the Cannabalism ability to be cured.”

Horror was on every one of the Agency's faces. None of them saw this coming. "And he left without telling anyone because he knew we'd talk him out of it." Concludes Dazai.

Ranpo shakes his head, a pained look on his face. Which only makes them all worry more, what else could there be?

"Atsushi didn't tell us because of that yes... But also because he planned it to be a one way trip." Ranpo takes another deep breathe, there were few times he hated his intelligence and this was one of them.

"What?!" Yells Kunikida, alarmed. "Tell me, do you think Atsushi would hand over the book to Fyodor?" Asks Ranpo, looking directly at him.

Kunikida pauses, before shaking his head. "No, that doesn't sound like Atsushi at all."

Ranpo nods "exactly, whatever deal he's made with Fyodor is not one Atsushi plans on keeping. Fyodor Dostoyevsky is not a someone to take lightly. He won't take betrayal kindly."

Dazai hums in agreement, recalling his interactions with the Demon.

"What I dont get, is why. Why would Atsushi do something so dangerous, risk dealing with Fyodor all alone without telling anyone?" Asks Kunikida.

"That's simple" says Akutugawa, getting everyone's attention. "That wretched Jinko gets tunnel vision when one of you are in danger."

Akutugawa looks at Ranpo "you said he planned a one way trip. That means he knows this stunt will kill him, he knew and did it anyway. Because to Jinko, his life means nothing if he can't save others, himself be damned."

He scoffs "what that idiot doesn't realise is that no one else feels the same. And the only one who can kill that idiot, is me."

Self sacrificing idiot...He was going to get him for this.

With the urgency in the air, the two organisations band together to find Atsushi. A temporary truce, considering Atsushi saved them all.

But even with everyone working together it's tricky. Sneaky was never a word anyone associated with Atsushi.

And yet he covered his tracks well, stuck to the blindspots in cameras or moved faster than they could spot him. Ranpo still figures it out but it was impressive.

"If this was under normal circumstances, I'd be quite proud." Says Kunikida and Dazai agrees. "Seems he's been taking our teachings to heart" he chuckles.

Dazai just hopes Atsushi will be there to recieve the praise he deserves.

It wasn't a secret that Atsushi doesn't think highly of himself. Dazai had known that from the moment they had met. But no one thought it was this bad.

That Atsushi would purposefully put himself in a situation that would very likely end in his death, just for a chance it would save them.

Everyone in the Agency makes a vow. To make sure that when they saved Atsushi, to help him realise just how much he means to them.

That he's not expendable or a tool or a monster... He's family, and they love him.

It felt like days but before they know it, they have Atsushi's location. Fitzgerald allowed them to use the Eyes of God, once he found out Fyodor was involved.

"Give him hell for me, will ya?"

Dazai grinned, but it was colder than his usual smile. He intends to give that Demon everything he deserves.

He and Kunikida along with Yosano, Chuuya and Akutugawa burst into the building.

Chuuya came incase they needed more fire power, who knew what defenses Fyodor had. And Akutugawa had simply tagged along and dared anyone to make him leave.

"This place is massive, that weretiger could be anywhere." Says Chuuya, looking around at the giant bunker. "Is it massive, or are you just short." Teases Dazai, Chuuya glares at him "stop picking on my size, jackass!"

Kunikida gets in between them "both of you be quiet, we don't have time for your bickering."

"Er, Kunikida."

"We're on a very serious mission, you need to be alert on guard."

"Kunikida!"

"What?!" He yells, looking at Dazai who's pressing his ear to the wall. "Do you guys hear that?" They all went quiet and listened in.

It was faint, it sounded hoarse and barely recognisable but it was familiar.

As were the words it was... Singing?

"Oh oh, yeah... You can't do a double suicide just by yourself."

There was only one person in this building who would know that song other than them. Quickly they all began following the sound.

The closer they got the louder it got, the more ragged it sounded. Each word followed by a cough that made them all wince at how pained it sounded.

Oh Fyodor was going to be given hell alright.

Dazai points at the door he believes the sounds coming from. And Chuuya runs ahead, wasting no time kicking down the door.

"He's here!"

None of them are not prepared for what they see.

Atsushi, sweet, kind Atsushi is trapped in a cage that's is far too small for him. Each of his limbs are pinned to the ground by metal stakes.

Blood plasters his hair to his face, covering one of his eyes. It's hard to mane anything else out, there's so much blood. Any normal human would've died long before they all arrived from the blood loss alone.

But Atsushi is alive.

He sniffles as they burst in, tears rolling down his cheeks. His eyes are empty, vacant and he doesn't make any reaction that he's seen them come in.

Yosano is at his side immediately, examining his injuries with a critical eye and a calm that comes from being a doctor.

Kunikida stands on one side and Dazai sits by the bars beside Atsushi. He leaves the medical stuff to the expert and instead starts talking.

He says anything and everything, whatever he can think off. Hoping that some life returns to those sunset eyes

Atsushi's gaze rests on him, there's a silence before Atsushi laughs. It's cold, harsh and clearly painful as the rest of his body shakes.

Dazai frowns, sadness in his eyes at the state of his mentee.

While a response is nice, it's clear Atsushi's not exactly all there. "He's been drugged" Says Yosano, it definitely explains why he wasn't healing.

Akutagawa shoots Atsushi a concerned look, but he stays by the door, guarding it with Chuuya.

Atsushi stops laughing, calming down. As unhinged as that display seemed, there's some light in his eyes and he hasn't looked away from Dazai.

Even if it's clear Atsushi has idea what he's talking about.

Dazai takes that as a cue to keep talking, gently running a hand through the non bloodsoaked parts of Atsushi's hair.

He tells Atsushi about a mission he did a while back that lead to him falling into a duck pond.

It's werid how normal this feels, like they could be back at the Agency with Atsushi listening to one of Dazai's tales. Even the bloods not out of place in that image, although there was never this much.

Atsushi frowns and without warning, moves. Yosano, Kunikida and Dazai all try to stop him but even bleeding out and not all there Atsushi overpowers them.

His hand, not the one that was severed and lays beside the cage, pats Dazai's cheek.

It's uncoordinated, the kind of grasp you'd expect from a baby. He can practically feel the bloody hand print it leaves.

It's cold, far too cold.

"Don't be sad, I fixed it. It's all okay, just gotta go now." Says Atsushi. His words slur together but Dazai hears him clear as day.

He barely has time to react before Atsushi's eyes roll back and he goes limp. Yosano immediately activates her ability, her hands shaking.

Dazai knows he doesn't look much better, Kunikida looks devastated.

Even if it was for a second, they had lost Atsushi.

"Chuuya!" Calls Yosano and he turns around, eyes widening with shock. The damage may be healed but it still looks awful. "I would've waited until after we removed these..." Explains Yosano, taking a deep breath.

Chuuya quickly composes himself and goes to her. Dazai just... Sits there and reminds himself that Atsushi is still breathing.

That last move must've taken all his strength. 'Even now, he uses his last words to comfort me' is all Dazai can think off before shoving it to the side to deal with later.

Focus.

Yosano cuts through the metal stakes and instructs Chuuya on how to take them out with his ability. Dazai considers it a miracle Atsushi passed out, he doesn't deserve anymore pain.

The second the last one is removed, Yosano activates her ability. It's only than does Dazai allow himself to breathe a sigh of relief.

He gently picks up Atsushi into his arms and stands up with them all. "Come on Atsushi, let's get you home.”

And by this, I mean- like- each character I know well enough, I give them a Pokemon (singular or else I'll be overthinking it all) =w= It's just a thing for myself to scratch that part of my brain. Assigning them a single Pokemon that compliments them. Which might lead to some vagueness.

Fukuzawa: Kleavor (Not my greatest idea, I kept thinking about "It either has to be about something similar to katanas/swords, or make it cats". Which I cheated at because Kleavor has axes for goodness sakes. If I were to give it the option, I would have given him Aegislash or a freakin *Litten.* "But Lavender, there's Kingambit-" YES. I KNOW. BUT TRUST ME, THAT ONE HAS OTHER PLANS. *cough- fukuchi- cough-*)

Ranpo: Skwovet (Snacks. Just... snacks. Ranpo can deduce cases just fine, but ohs to the woes, he needs more places to stash his snacks. Bam. These babies. But if he wants a Pokemon to enjoy snacking with, Morpeko is the second choice. It's either stash is or eat it, bois.)

Yosano: Blissey (Blissey knows your location. Blissey is approaching your location. Blissey is at your frontdoor. Blissey offers you an egg in these trying times. [ . . . ] Look it's either Blissey incoming or Hattrem incoming, an egg or an smack, pick your poison.)

Kunikida: Indeedee (This one took me a second to figure this one out. But after thinking of a small few, Indeedee was what I chose with the idea of them helping him and his work. The other two were Espeon, Minccino/Cincchino, and Meowstic.)

Dazai: Absol (Now I hate reusing the same Pokemon [I wrote this stuff out of order hhh], but without spoiling too much, while Absol is known for sensing danger, in Dazai's case it would be that they "bring forth" danger. But other than that, if I did go with my unwritten rule, I would have given him Alolan Ninetails because ahahahaa kitsune dazai agenda)

Tanizaki: Hisuian Zorua (Illusionssss. Illusion buddiessss. And to make it a play on words with snow, I made it be Hisuian form because they spawn in the icelands.)

Kenji: Gyrados (I was planning on giving Kenji Sunflora because he is sweet summer child, but at the same time... my boi can hit like a semitruck. Not to mention the cute story that he caught this very weak Magikarp in his village, took care of it, and the next thing you know this kid is giving their [looks at pokedex] "the literal embodiment of tsunami if angry" on a walk. The absolute humor, guys. The *hinjinks*. That or I go with the trend of him bringing a cow to the agency and give him a Miltank.)

Atsushi: Growlithe (Surprise, we have a Growlithe. This is the closest thing we have to a tiger in Pokemon. Unfortunately, its shiny isn't white but yellow. You can decide whether or not this little Growlithe ir a normal or shiny, but in my hc it's just a white tiger variant of Growlithe LET ME LIVE MY DREAM-)

Kyouka: Froslass (All I could remember before looking at the Pokedex entry was that it has something to do with a soul of a woman, and jus- *Gestures vaguely at Froslass, Demon Snow, and the fact that Demon Snow was previously Kyouka's mother's ability)

Mori: Ursaluna (This one gave me MAJOR trouble trying to figure out. My guy's a doctor, but at the same time is the big mafia boss man. The only other Pokemon I could think of were either Bewere, Drampa, or Dragapult, I don't know why I thought those Pokemon specifically. So I just threw everything out, looked at Fukuzawa's Kleavor, went onto the Hisui Pokedex, grabbed Ursaluna, and yeets it at the man. Ursaluna. God-)

Chuuya: Midnight Form Lycanroc (Angry red pupper, emphasis on red. Yeah, I had to, I am not sorry.)

Kouyou: Milotic (Powerful but also very beautiful ◡‿◡ . But at some point, I thought about Lurantis. )

Akutagawa: Mimikyu (This was in my notes before, but yes! Mimikyu. The popularity battle of Mimikyu v Pikachu is similar to Aku v Atsushi. Other than that, Mimikyu was the closest to being compared to Rashomon, with their shadow arm.)

Higuchi: Heliolisk (Unfortunately we are still unsure of Higuchi's Ability, if Asagiri does intend to give her an Ability. For now, though, I had to go off by her appearance. Simply grabbed black, white, and yellow. Looks at all the Pokemon, and decided on Heliolisk. And to be honest, I like it. Dunno if it's just me, but this Pokemon and Higuchi with her sunglasses on? Heck yeahhhh.)

Hirotsu: Meowstic (A secondary option to Kunikida, I decided to give Hirotsu Meowstic because I think the Pokemon and his Ability are similar. In my head, Hirotsu's Ability is basically an impact or what it is explained, "repulsion". And with Meowstic, it holds their physic power back by their ears. But if provokes and have those ears raise up, it'll unleash that power that it "powerful enough to obliterate a 10-ton truck or tanker to dust.")

Gin: Ceruledge (I wanted Gin's Pokemon to match Akutagawa's in some way but have there be blades. Took a look at Mimikyu's typing which was ghost and fairy. In fairy, Iron Valiant. In ghost, Ceruledge. And while, yes, Iron Valiant looks pretty like her, Ceruledge takes the cake.)

Tachihara: Steelix (Is the only reason I give Tachihara Steelix is because he can manipulate metal, and Steelix is... s-steel type? Yeah I'm not that creative. But if it makes ya feel better, I instantly thought of Onyx or Steelix for this guy.)

Q: Banette (One, it's a doll. Two, similar to Q [in a sense-], Banette was previously a doll that was abandoned. I was thinking about giving this one to Lucy, but I think I could find a Pokemon best suited for her. So Banette for Q!)

Kajii: Voltorb (The only reason is explodey bois. Anyways-)

one thing that struck me about today’s BSD season 4 episode (aside from the world-turning-to colour moment, which was super dope!), was the use of levels and positioning. in particular, i’m referring to ranpo’s scene here, where he makes his address to the audience.

first of all, the imagery of him being on a throne directly calls to his self-proclaimed new status as the “world’s greatest detective”. but what’s also interesting is just how high up he is.

it’s not so clear in those first screenshots, but here, you get this very clear view of how high up he is. he’s on the tallest level of the stage, above murakami, the policemen, and the audience.

this whole sequence takes place after fukuzawa hands him those infamous glasses, and tells him that he’s gifted. ranpo believes he’s an ability user, and so, this separates him from the masses in his mind, who are visually represented here by the audience on the ground (including fukuzawa, who hasn’t discovered his ability yet at this stage). and this not only separates him from them — it elevates him. putting him on, not only the stage, but the highest part, emphasises the difference in his self-perception. he is different from the regular ‘monsters’ because he is an ability user: a rarity, an urban legend of sorts.

even here, when the police officer (who is definitely not suspicious at all) comes over to compliment ranpo and fukuzawa, the concept of levels is at play. this police officer is, to our current knowledge, a regular, non-gifted human. he even expresses shock and awe at the fact that he’s in the mere presence of an ability user. ranpo is at the top of the stairs, again, emphasising his position as a gifted ability-user, someone beyond the skills of a regular human.

and ranpo’s (literal) elevation, especially in the stage scene, is also linked to the themes of the play itself, i’d argue. and like, full disclosure that i’m long overdue for a reread of untold origins since my memory is very blurry at best, so i’m just going to be basing this off what the anime does with the play (since, after all, this is a post analysing the relevance of positioning and layers/height/elevation in the anime).

at the start, it’s stated that angels are ‘gifted’ beings — and the word used here is, to my knowledge, the same as the word for ability user (please correct me if i’m wrong!). so the association is immediately established: gifteds — ability users — are strong, beyond human comprehension, and powerful enough to strike a fallen angel down. so that is to say, stronger than the normal, status quo.

there’s religious (largely christian) imagery written all over the stage. at the start, one of the fallen angels in the play is ‘murdered’, and the imagery behind is undoubtedly a nod towards the crucifixion of jesus. and this position and framing here very much reminds me of an altar. especially with murakami’s ‘corpse’ under the (white!) cloth.

ranpo’s position, above everyone, being deliberately above the cross, the centre of the spotlight — it’s almost as if he is some higher being. something there to cast judgement above all. something like… an angel. who are gifted beings, according the play, as he himself believes he is, since he’s been dubbed an ability user by fukuzawa.

indeed, the murder and the play are deeply connected — but so’s the symbolism of ranpo rising above everyone else and the concept of ‘gifteds’/‘ability users’ and the concepts laid out in the play. at least, in my view.

positioning has always been used in the BSD anime to display power dynamics and relations, and it’s a similar concept here. the subtle details make all the difference to the way we view the anime, i think. and that’s the power of visual storytelling!

Bungou stray dogs has more character parallels and contrasts then any other show I've ever seen

seriously, almost every single character can be compared to a random other one and their stories and personalities almost always compliment or contrast each other.

Chuuya and Yosano: both being used for their powerful ability and made to think they have no say over their lives.

Oda and Fukuzawa. both going from cold blooded assassins to caring, empathetic father figure to gifted children who feel alone

Fyodor and Sigma: with one being a supernatural being who feels like a regular human and one being a (presumed) regular human who feels like a supernatural being.

some of these character never even interact with eachother but their stories still connect in so many ways.

It makes all of them seem so multidimensional and gives you a glimpse into one character possible life through another character.

This show blows most anime out of the water in this regard, it just makes me so happy!

I have so many kunikatai headcanons so I thought I'd share them!

-they met in middle school

-started dating first year of high-school

-got married(illegally, kunikidas idea) in the autumn following graduation

-it was a very small wedding, consisting of the two of their parents, and a few friends from school

-it was in katais favorite Cafe, a very small place that not many people know about

-they don't live together for safety reasons

-only yosano, ranpo, and fukuzawa know

-kunikida doesn't often wear his wedding ring in fear if it getting damaged

-sometimes katai will force him to play various video games with him

-kunikida really likes stardew valley and similar games

-kunikida let's katai braid his hair sometimes

-katai sucked at first but he's surprisingly good now

-kunikida had a 'rebellious phase' type thing in high school

-and a short emo phase in middle school

-his teachers liked him for being a smart student but hated how often he got in trouble

-he would beat up anyone who made fun of katai

-katai would always tell him not to bother doing that but would absolutely do the same if anyone made fun of kuni

-kunikida helps katai cut his hair

-katai visits the agency one day and ends up telling everyone about kunikidas high school years

-everyone is absolutely shocked (minus ranpo ofc)

-kuni frequently gets kicked out of libraries for arguing with the librarians over how the books are arranged

-They meet at the school nurses office!!-katai had a very bad panic attack and kuni got into a pretty bad fight

-school nurses kinda suck tbh so kuni helps katai with his panic attack

-they become good friends after that

-or they could meet in a school counselors office for the same reasons

-they'd probably bond the same way too bc school counselors suck more than school nurses(Like seriously though, once my old school counselor told me that I was being selfish/a selfish person for being suicidal)

-kunikida is totally the type of guy to just throw random compliments into any sentence he can

-katai let's kunikida sit under his futon with him

-katai does his best to help

-it turned into a double date where Katai tried to beat Dazai at every game possible and the other two just watched and cheered a lil

-kunikida also doesn't like it much, he thinks it's weird and unprofessional

-they cuddle a lot at home tho

-they both confessed at the same time

-kunikida said that he had something very important to tell katai

-katai said that before that he had something to give kunikida and hands him a letter

-kuni reads the love letter and is just like.."i...I was going to say the same thing.." and looks away blushing

-kunikida proposed

-he took katai out to a very small Cafe that hardly anyone knew about

-they ordered food and talked a bit and once katai got comfortable being there he proposed

-katai obviously said yes

-katai didn't mean to say it but it accidentally slipped out

-Katai has social anxiety

-Kunikida helps as best he can, bringing Katai things so he doesn't have to go out and talk to people as much

-They go on walks every evening or so

-Kunikida does most of the cooking

-Katais not bad at cooking, but he just doesn't

-They lay in bed and listen to music together

-When kunikida was a teacher Katai would stop by and bring him lunch after his missions sometimes

-Kunikida taught advanced middle schoolers algebra and paet timed at the agency after

-his students were shocked when they found out

-Kunikida got arrested for protesting and breaking off those spikes cities put up to prevent homeless people from sleeping a lot

-Katai bailed him out every time

-Kuni became pretty decent friends with a couple of other people who frequently got arrested for similar things and some of the cops who repeatedly arrested him

he’s almost always awake before you, so it’s inevitable that he makes you a nice breakfast for the holiday

some tea paired with your favorite breakfast food served on a platter for you to eat in bed

let’s be honest, the man rarely takes days off from work, so it takes a bit of convincing to get him to take the day off

i say “a bit” because he adores you so after just a few pouts he’s fallen under your spell and staying home

eventually, he’d probably silence his phone for a little bit to ensure his time with you is spent well

yukichi loves to spoil you even with the little amount the agency may pay and gives you the princess treatment

you know, the usual, buying you gifts, taking you out wherever you’d like, and such

he’ll buy you jewelry and insists he puts it on you

definitely more of a classic romantic type of guy, he buys you flowers and takes you out to dinner

i don’t know why i thought of this, but i feel like he’s the kind of guy to leave sticky notes with small words of affirmation throughout the house

also i’m like 99% sure he’d have the two of you go out to a cat cafe or just something to do with cats

if you’d prefer to stay in for valentine’s day, he’s perfectly okay with that

would definitely help with dinner and other stuff around the house, always

Headcanon about my favorites BSD characters (and also my highest kin) : Ranpo Edogawa.

1 - No one in the ADA want to watch a movie with him, he always end up spoiling everything and say "It was too easy to guess, why don't you understand?"

2 - He hates dark chocolate, he thinks it's not sweet enough. That's why as soon as we offer him some, he gives them to Fukuzawa, Yosano or Kunikida.

3 - He often blames things on others. Is there no more candy? He will blame Dazai. Even if he knows that it's bad, he's used to doing it, so the ADA just don't care anymore.

4 - He always smells like chocolate or candy, which is one of the reasons why Atsushi can always find Ranpo when the detective is lost.

5 - He dislikes being complimented on his physique. Because for him, the physical does not create a detective, and will prefer to be complimented on his intelligence.

6 - He actually dislikes playing chess, except if there's something to win (Like chocolate, candy…)

7 - During the important events, while everyone in the ADA drinks wine except minors, Ranpo drinks his ramune in silence.

8 - When he was still in his police academy, he blew up a computer in technology because a friend bet him that he wouldn't be able to. But none of these two expected the computer to ACTUALLY blow up...

9 - No one in the ADA saw him cry. He said "Everyone relies on me, if I cry, there's no hope."

10 - Dazai is actually surprised that Ranpo still has hope for humanity. I mean, Ranpo knows EVERYONE's backstory. He knows how cruel humans are, and they were even cruel to him. It's something Dazai could never understand..

11 - He's actually good with kids, but since he's not patient with them.

12 - Ranpo is like shazam, when someone doesn't know the song, they ask him and he gives the titles. Even if sometimes he gives the wrong titles on purpose because he likes seeing them annoyed.

13 - Someone already told him "I love you but you're autistic" and the person walked away.

14 - The weirdest insult he received was "your mother drinks pasta water". And the person was really serious. Ranpo just ended up laughing.

15 - When he was still in school, Ranpo commented on every argument. For example, a girl and a boy were arguing, the boy told the girl "b*tch", then Ranpo would say to the girl "he insulted you of a b*tch" even if she heard it correctly.

16 - Due to that, his teacher once asked him if he wanted to be a journalist. He answered "No, why ?", and the teacher told him "Because even if there's nothing to say, you still talk"

17 - He and his mother were very close, and they understood each other. He really felt like he was understood by her, and when she died, he called her number constantly hoping that one day she would pick up. He was in denial for a very long time. But he could only hear his mother's voice through the answering machine. He called her number to hear he voice, even with the answering machine, when he didn't feel great.

18 - Ranpo once started a fight with someone who said "I want to have ADHD and autism so bad"

19 - He once made his P.E teacher cry, but she deserved it so he don't feel guilty right now.

20 - Ranpo is BAD for gifts. Like, really. He's always stressed when someone's birthday is close or when it's Christmas.
