"Arlington, Virginia is like a gateway to the city of Washington D.C. Part of the Metro line, but across the Potomac, it’s nevertheless a busy area and not the kind of place you’d expect to be able to get minutes-old, farm-fresh produce.
But Area 2 Farms is growing greens, herbs, and root vegetables in a vertical farm thanks to the dearth of traditional office tenants. With high-rise office space remaining vacant even after the end of the pandemic, landlords are open to ideas.
Jackie Potter and Tyler Baras pitched the idea of an indoor farm and it was obviously a good one because Area 2 is already well-established in the Arlington area such that they offer subscription delivery of fresh veggies to fellow urbanites starting at $40 per week.
Area 2 Farms uses a sophisticated conveyor belt system called Silo to cut down on the more laborious hours of indoor farming. It’s not a hydroponic system—there is soil inside Area 2 Farms which means they can grow root vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and radishes.
When executed correctly, vertical farming can produce as much as traditional farming but with a lot less space, and no concern over weather or pests. Obviously as well it can be done in the center of a city, where land is at a premium...
“Cities are changing every day,” Potter tells Modern Farmer. “There’s a really great economic opportunity as well. Our farms create new green jobs, they beautify spaces and provide fresh food to local communities. That’s something that’s really precious.”"

Three things I'm feeling grateful for today -
1. A fresh top-up haul from my local fruit and veg shop.
2. Plenty of outdoor exercise. Natural light. Fresh air and sunshine FTW 😁
3. Comfort food my way. Porridge with peanut butter and chopped apple. Yum 🤩
It's been a very positive day.
Before breakfast, I had my usual little walk, then had a training session with my most loyal online client.
Upper body, using two sets of dumbbells. The lighter set for higher rep, faster paced sets. Then slow and steady with low rep sets with the heavier weights.
It was an incredibly active morning, with the walk, workout and then a 15 mile bike ride after breakfast.
I got out again for a second half hour walk after lunch.
Very good day!

If you're like me and happen to like water drops on plants, I highly recommend taking a longer look at the fresh vegetable section on your next grocery run. :)
Photos are mine, unedited. The two near the bottom were taken with a phone camera in a different store. All the rest were taken with an Olympus handheld camera whose brightness I turned down. Sadly that camera broke in the cold a long time ago. Haven't have a phone camera that's ever worked as well. I have a digital SLR, but that's an expensive piece of equipment that was my college graduation present. I don't take that out unless I've planned for it.

This one's not in the grocery store; it's from the first time I helped make borscht with my grandmother. :)

Got some stuff done in preparation for spring🌻 this week, and I couldn't be more happy with myself!!!
First of all, I got my greenhouse ready! I laid down fresh cardboard (been hoarding it for weeks). Then, I spent $57 on black mulch and stepping stones.
I laid it all out, and then I sprinkled eucalyptus essential oil all over as a natural bug repellent.
It came out so neat and crisp looking!

I want to install some solar powered lights of some sort, and I plan to build shelving out of cinder blocks and flat boards. This is just the beginning!!
I also got a fresh batch of seeds going. Focused on flowers for this go around.

First row of 4 is Zinnia, next row is 4 Morning Glory blue, next is 4 M. Glory pink and purple mix, then 4 M.Glory striped mix, finally, 8 Marigold.
Today was a good day! Stay safe out there!

Made veggie soup for tea. Love my homemade soup!
Even better, since I made it with the freebies I found at the edge of the harvested field the other day!
And yes, I was very careful around that blender......

*hanging upside from a portal with a basket of fresh veggies from her garden*
"Here yeah go. Might not be exactly what ya had but hope this helps."
*holds out the basket to Elara*
Oh, thank you. I appreciate any gift, especially of the food variety.
