needs some royal regalia (and one day I'll get up on my soapbox and ask the questions that need be asked re: What did Johanna need a full set of armor for and can I watch her crush shit with it), but so obviously Frederick gives Johanna as a part of her betrothal gifts, her wedding accoutrement, a proper bridal tiara right

Like properly, what else is her veil supposed to be held to, and furthermore as the new matriarch of House De Rolo she needs to be gifted a parure befitting a woman of her new stature, and I bet it's an old old piece of white gold, amethyst, sapphires and regular gold, Whitestone colors of course, and it's so old that Frederick got it from his own mother who got it from her mother from her mother from Melanie, for the express purpose of crowning his new bride, that it's passed through every lady of Whitestone's hands,

And as Julius sat there with his hands on her fat belly Johanna thought to herself, well, tradition is as tradition does I suppose, and she might have drafted a new set for their new little duskborn present, their eventide blessing, and that wasn't traditional but who cares, Whitestone prospers and her daughters will have their little trinkets, but I think on Vesper's coming of age Johanna sets her own diadem on Vesper's head with a smile at her slight breach of etiquette, coming of age but not yet married and yet it'll be our little secret, and she's kept Whitney and Cassandra's parures safe in a box in her room for when the time came, the requisite jewels can come and go on their little heads but this diadem was, is, has always been special, a family heirloom and an homage to the bonny and blitheness of their home all in one. The lady of Castle Whitestone settled for a slightly less bombastic headpiece that Frederick found for her in his own mother's belongings and life shifted on, and no one could deny that Vesper wore it well and with pride.

I think Sylas snatches it out of Vesper's matted hair to place it on the new lady of the House, and I think despite the brainwashing that that simple sight rankles in Cassandra's heart like nothing else, and when they kick the Briarwoods out obviously, obviously Percy takes it and sets it just so in Cass's hair, he is the new lord of whitestone after all, for a few more days, hours at least, and She the new lady, and that hurts y'know, it's a good hurt but it does hurt. Perhaps it doesn't fit perfectly but when it's all you have left at the moment, what else can you do?

and then Vex and Percy's first wedding rolls around, and despite it being a secret, a wrapped cushion appears on her bed as she's getting ready for the most important day of her life, a startlingly heavy little package with the most beautiful hairpiece she's ever seen with a little note of "for your special day, Lady De Rolo," tucked into the package string. (Cass puts on the diadem her mother had made specifically for her instead, they found it in the back of her boudoir, hidden and unscathed somehow, and it fits like an absolute dream, and suits her too, and the fact that it does so makes her cry so hard, mother never could have known it'd end like that and yet...) And Percy might have cried harder than he was already going too when he sees Vex but he spares her the sad explanation until after their wedding night, and when Vax leaves and everything settles down and the world stops ending for once, and little Vesper Elaina is sitting directly on her bladder, she takes to wearing it around the castle a lot more. It suits her, surprisingly enough.

(and one day it'll rest on Vesper's head again, and one day Percy will walk Leona and Gwendolyn down the aisle with that piece in their hair and feel a type of way about it)

Vesper is absolutely spoiled by VM - they get better with it as time goes on [the Trickfoots have their own kids, and the rest have their responsibilities really settle in, and Vex and Percy learn that maybe spoiling a kid rotten isn't the best way to go] but this kid gets everything. Partially because she's the first baby and SO cute... partially because Vax just died and Vex is A Mess so they're all rallying to defeat this for her, for themselves, and it's very healing to make a lil baby smile and laugh.

Scanlan actually isn't the best at lullabies - the kids turn to Pike's huskier and softer voice at bedtime. Which Scanlan is Very Dramatic About, but he has the best songs for games and chores and good times and such. But Pike lulls them right to sleep, and also offers up sea shanties when they're working on chores as a family that require a rhythm.

Sorry, but you know Willhand'ildan absolutely fucking hates his name. He and Vax'ildan (Dan) bond over not really... knowing how to deal with being named after dead people, especially the same guy their parents feel guilty about not being able to save. So Dan and Wills actually end up being very close friends, and I HC they're fairly close friends too. I HC Dan as becoming a Druid in Zephrah, and if so he and Wills either send letters regularly or Wills works as a Tempest Blade there too (shhh hes FINE hes FINE he comes out COMPLETELY UNSCATHED SHHH).

Juniper's feelings are less complicated, because Scanlan had a lot more time to come to terms with his mother's death, and her name is a lot more common / namesake less well known so people don't immediately bug her about it. She feels really touched she has this connection to this woman only her dad knew.

Not v relevant but imagine an AU where Tary and Lawrence adopt a lil Fjord. (They both settle down in Port Damali, which is where Lawrence was living, and where Fjord grew up!) Consider Fjord with gay dads who absolutely trounce on standard ideas of masculinity from the word go, and also are prolific authors. Jester would get absolutely fucking starry-eyed when he tells her lmao

hi so we recently got into dimension 20 and our friends have been tugging us towards critical role for a very long time at this point but we still haven’t watched any of it nor do we know all that much about anything that actually happens in it. however we do intend to actually start watching soon so we decided it was the perfect opportunity to make one of those ‘all the things i know about this thing i haven’t watched’ posts, show it to our critrole friends, and then actually get into critrole and be able to look back and laugh about it later

For as long as the de Rolos have lived, so has their curse. Its roots have long since been forgotten, perhaps a spell from a witch long dead, maybe the genes of someone married in, or maybe it’s just always been that way. No matter how the curse came to be, it’s been passed to every bloodborne de Rolo born as long as memory serves. 

But as much as the curse is known among the immediate family, it is also Whitestone’s best kept secret. None but those bearing the last name de Rolo are privy to what happens to anyone carrying de Rolo blood under the light of the full moon. 

Percy doesn’t remember a time he was told about the curse, it’s just always been part of his life. He didn’t start to change until after his third birthday, a bit early in comparison to his other siblings, something he still holds over their heads as a teenager. 

“Percy, dear,” his mother calls him over with a soft smile and a gentle wave of her hand. With a sigh, Percy does as he’s told and heads the call, sinking into the chair beside her at the dining table. 

Before he’s even properly seated, Johanna starts making him a plate, knowing that he probably won’t eat much unless she forces him too. “You need to eat breakfast,” she chides him. “You have to keep your strength up for tonight.” 

“Tonight?” Percy asks with a frown, stabbing a piece of fruit with his fork.

“The full moon,” Frederick chimes in, already on his second helping of food. 

Percy sighs heavily. It’s bad enough that the full moon interrupts his nights in his workshop, but it also means that he is forced to spend time with all of his family. All of whom become very very annoying in their wolf forms. 

Percy has long since lost the argument of him staying in the castle, in his workshop during the full moon. His mother, though she doesn’t change herself, refuses to let him be alone when he’s as vulnerable as he is in that state. Not to mention that keeping the fact that the Lord de Rolo, along with all his seven children, is a werewolf becomes significantly harder to hide when they remain that close to the castle.

So Percy piles food on his plate under his mother’s watchful eye. He slumps in on himself as he forces himself to eat. All around him, his siblings are rowdy. They always are before a full moon; even his father is playing into the antics more than usual. 

Johanna sighs and leans over to Percy, tucking his hair back. Percy forces himself not to pull away, he knows that makes his mother upset. “It’s just one night, Percival.”

“I know.” He bites into a piece of bacon. His mother sighs again and pulls away. 

When sunset comes, the whole family is waiting in a clearing in the woods. They go there every month, it’s just far enough outside the castle to not arouse suspicion. Percy sits on the grass, tugging his shoes off and setting them to the side. 

Cassandra and Ludwig are already wild, running and chasing each other through the clearing. His mother sits behind Whitney, braiding her hair back. Frederick comes over to Percy with a smile, “Are you ready, Percival?”

He sighs and allows his father to help him to his feet, “I suppose.” Frederick laughs as though Percy made a joke and squeezes the back of his neck. He guides Percy over to the rest of the family just as the sun begins to dip below the horizon.

The shift happens quickly. At his age, it no longer hurts, his bones and muscles move into place. When he blinks, he along with the rest of his family are wolves. Cassandra’s transformation still must hurt because she scampers over to their mother, whining as Johanna runs her fingers through her thick fur.

How would being ruidusborn affect Percy's relationships with his siblings, dyou think? And in turn, his grief and survivor's guilt over what happens to them?

... oh dear.

So. First of all - I think that Ruidusborn!Percy would be a lot more isolated due to his powers. There's both the social stigma that comes with it, isolating him from peers for being unlucky, cursed from birth - but also the fact that, just... do you really want your know-it-all brother to know everything about you? He has six siblings - I doubt a young Percy would extend the same grace to his siblings he does to VM, because he has a pronounced little shit instinct and would delight in Knowing shit he isn't supposed to and potentially holding it over his siblings' heads. He might perceive himself as being closer to them, because he knows all their secrets and such, but I suspect he might spend even more time in the workshop as a child. Percy likely knows perfectly well how to keep his powers in check, at least to a degree, and not snoop on his siblings too intentionally after some spat or another actually hurts his feelings/makes him realize just how invasive this feels for others, but - again. If he realizes he's genuinely made his siblings uncomfortable, he might just go hide in the workshop both to avoid the situation and make a gift to make it right. TLDR, young Percy would still greatly love his family, and maybe feel even more strongly attached to them - but this might be counterbalanced by his siblings and parents being less attached to him.

(Maybe Cass might still be fond of him, a cool big brother who can read her mind, by virtue of being the youngest and Percy being enough years older that she hopefully does not experience the worst of him taking advantage of mind reading, unlike her siblings who dealt with him ratting them out, beating them to their ideas and otherwise being a bit of a lil shithead. Julius and Vesper might feel more protective of him, as their little cursed brother, but would likewise probably be more distant given he's less a sibling and more a responsibility :C)

(Hm! I could see Frederick and/or Johanna keeping him discreetly nearby when dealing with nobles/family they don't necessarily trust, as a sort of lie detector. Situations where Percy isn't actually part of the event, and is kept away from the worst of the crowds, but uses his abilities to listen in and keep his parents informed. Say they bring these important guests into a parlor of somesort. Good gods would that inflate his ego.)

On the other hand, we see with Imogen that being in crowds can be downright distressing for a Ruidusborn with telepathy, so Percy might be excused from social events often (both for his sake and that of the guests). Yet another reason to spend more time in his workshop - which is why I can still easily see Percy being a Gunslinger in this AU and not leaning into full Sorcerer like Imogen. He's tinkering just as much if not more, so he definitely has those skills from all this time spent alone in his workshop. Hell - if I go with my idea of making him albino (so the white hair is tied to him being Ruidusborn, not to Trauma) it might be better to keep him inside regardless, due to being so sensitive to sunlight. (I bet the bastard invents sunglasses.)

Can you see where I'm going with this? I hope you can:

Percy wouldn't have been at the dinner with the Briarwoods.

The de Rolos don't distrust the Briarwoods - they're having dinner with their entire family there! But all his siblings, and his parents, and the servants, and the guards, and the guests would be a lot for Percy, and he's likely fairly used to eating supper on his own anyways.

Perhaps he knew something was afoot. Perhaps a day or two before he caught a guard thinking terrible things, and informed his parents, and the man was hung and it was thought the treason was routed. He saved his family, he could rest easy.

He shouldn't have.

(Unfortunate for him that Anders is his tutor. That Anders knew well about his powers, and clearly could have informed the Briarwoods of this as well as minding himself accordingly. Of course Percy wouldn't pry into his tutor's thoughts. Of course he wouldn't know that, had he attended dinner, he wouldn't be able to glean anything from the Briarwoods, that they'd offer these fancy magic items from Wildemount for the de Rolo's poor, cursed boy. Of course he doesn't know he'd almost have been happy, before it started.)

(And in the dungeon, he gets to feel the minds of each of his family members be snuffed out. Ripley makes sure he's close enough for that.)

Every chain in the Gilmore's Glorious Goods franchise has a small shrine to him somewhere, black silk adorned with colourful beads and tall white candles, snowdrops and raven feathers scattered around a small picture of the late rogue who had captured the sorcerer's heart.

Murals popped up in places he had once visited, the art becoming protected landmarks.

Tal'Dorei decalres ravens as a protected species of bird, snowdrops a protected species of flower, and a national holiday gets penned in the Tal'Dorein calendar.

Elaina gets a proper burial at last, a urn of her son's ashes buried in her casket alongside her remains.

Then, a child unlike any other is named after him; Vax'ildan Frederick de Rolo is born with an uncanny resemblance to his uncle.

Vax'ildan is never forgotten.

Vax'ildeux chose his name. You will pry this headcanon from my cold dead hands, Vax'ildeux is trans and he chose his uncle's name on PURPOSE - but he didn't do it recklessly.

He spoke to his mum, obviously, and to his dad, and he had a long sit down conversation with Auntie Keyleth.

There were a lot of tears.

But at the end of it, he had the blessing of all three to go ahead with it. He was always going to be who he knows himself to be, but being able to have the name - that means a lot. It's a weighty name, and it's not one his parents would ever have chosen for him, but the ravens are familiar in Whitestone and he and his siblings get visited with them whenever it's difficult, and the ravens had been persistent when he'd been figuring out himself and what name to take.

He got the feeling his Uncle Vax wanted him to take on the name.

After all, they've got a lot of lost family to honour. He's going to do his damndest to live up to that.

i love both the cute and hilarious idea of poor vax'ildeux being in the "dead heroes names club" with wilhand'ildan and the absolutely heartbreaking but heartwarming idea of him choosing this name. because i can see vex being so worried about how vax will be remembered - the hero of exandria, the champion of the raven queen, and unfamiliar and impassive mask in temples the world over - and then her child comes up and asks to take his name as a sign of honor, of choice. and she knows that the kids know the vax she wanted to be remembered, both because of how she talks about him, and because of the stupid ravens that are just as annoying as he ever was. and some of that burden lifts from her shoulders

and she knows vax would have crowed (ha) about it endlessly, so fucking proud and supportive of his nephew, which makes vex even MORE emotional about the ordeal

Would Percy be considered a Norseman in the real world, or is he more Slavic? I remember Taliesin mention that his original idea for Percy was just a clockmaker in Northern Europe. Does that make Whitestone… someplace like Denmark then? I want to say someplace like the UK because of the accent, but I’m not sure… To me, his name seems more Germanic/French/Polish than anything.

Norse is a very specific time period my dude, you probably mean Scandinavian. And the answer is no.

Taliesin seems to have taken snippets from everywhere, and I generally go with the accent and think of him as British. Given Whitestone was founded by Wildemount folk originally - who Matt gave a Prussian influence to - it actually kind of fits. A lot of British nobles have French and German blood, and the royal family has a good chunk of German to them.

Percy's name is a mix because Taliesin took it, iirc, from anime characters he'd worked on the dubs for. Percival is French and British (Arthuriana), Fredrickstein would be German (Frederick is German iirc, and stein is German for ... I want to say stone but it's been years since I studied it.) "von" is German and means "of" when used in naming - so-and-so of such-and-such, be that place or family. Klossowski is pronounced by Taliesin as Kowalski which I believe would make it Polish, "de Rolo" is I think then an older French influence. Might be wrong. Given the Wildemount origins of the family and of Whitestone, it seems to me they're more a riff on Prussian, especially German, Austro-Hungarian, and Polish nobility, not anything further north. The clock Percy builds Taliesin has said is a riff on the one in Prague, which is in the Czech Republic and landlocked between Germany, Austria and Poland.

I go with English for Percy because 1. That accent; we have decidedly non-British and non-American accents throughout the Campaigns, including Campaign 1, which suggests it's intended as Percy's natural diction. 2. If Wildemount is fantasy Prussia and Slavic influences and Whitestone was then founded by Wildemount expats: *looks at the Saxons of Saxony, which is part of Germany, arriving in and thereafter influencing England* *looks at Britain's royal family which is largely German in extraction* 3. I am British, so I feel most comfortable using that point of reference, and 4. Taliesin explained Percy's "we didn't touch in my family" line as being about the particular social codes around familial affection in noble Prussian families (iirc at least) and those codes of behaviour were also strongly seen in Victorian British codes of behaviour ("children should be seen and not heard") and iirc Kaiser Wilhelm's mother was discouraged from being too affectionate with her young son by Queen Victoria.

Tl;dr: I find ample evidence for this interpretation and if not this you'd probably want to lean more Germanic.

If you do want an argument for a more Scandinavian interpretation - gun comes (via a crossbow named Gunilda) from gunnhildr (meaning "war, battle") ... but the hildr part also means "battle" and is also seen in German; you can easily argue cultural overlap if you wish.

And lastly... just because the character’s original concept was a clockmaker from Northern Europe, that hardly means it’s still relevant. In Critical Role, Percy is the inventor of guns as much as a clockmaker; the whole setting is different. There are times when the originating ideas are indicative, but no longer helpful.

Fanfiction Recommendations: Camp Wildemount by cashewvesh

A very cute summer camp AU where the mighty nien are the teenage camp counselors and the bells hells are the campers! So far it only has one chapter but I think it's really cute so I think it is still worth checking out even if it's never updates.

There's also some small shipping even in this first chapter and it stays very sweet about it. The only Trigger Warning (Spoilers ahead) I would put is that there's some small transphobia that's mentioned and that Trent Ikithon is mentioned in one line. After that it's all fluff really.
