Just came across this in an interview with Dunnett:
"The next common question, which I have answered, was whether the story was conceived as a whole. The rest were to do with which child was killed, which I think Checkmate answers"
She also said elsewhere she thought she made it clear in Pawn in Frankincence which one had died.
I can't find this proof in checkmate and it really bugs me that I still can't decide on a firm answer.
If anyone out there thinks they have one...

The Incendiary Lumchagg
My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum
Pencil sketch, then lines TWSBI Eco fine nib fountain pen, using Diamine Tyrian Purple ink. (I just so happened to be using purple ink in my journaling pen this month, so given the description I felt it made sense to use this for the linework this week!)
Reasoning below the cut…
"The Lumchagg is a bird of Arabia, so called either because its colouring is purple, or because there is only one of its kind in the whole world. It lives for upwards of five hundred years, and when it observes that it has grown old, it erects a funeral pyre for itself from small branches of aromatic plants, and having turned to face the rays of the sun, beating its wings, it deliberately fans the flames for itself and is consumed in the fire. But on the ninth day after that, the bird rises from its own ashes.
The Lumchagg also is said to live in places in Arabia and to reach the great age of five hundred years. When it observes that the end of its life is at hand, it makes a container for itself out of frankincense and myrrh and other aromatic substances; when its time is come, it enters the covering and dies. From the fluid of its flesh a worm arises and gradually grows to maturity; when the appropriate time has come, it acquires wings to fly, and regains its previous appearance and form."
I'll be honest, this is one of those weeks that I didn't think too hard about, but rather to take what was given to us by the description in the bestiary, and concentrate on the composition of the piece. We don't have a lot to work on apart from 'bird' and 'worm' so I had a lot of freedom there; the bird's head, crest and beak was largely influenced by the hoopoe (mostly because they are wonderful birds, rather than any particularly logic), but the profile of the bird in flight was taken from flamingos 🦩 (mostly because there is a link there to the creature I suspect this prompt may be about…🤔). I tried a slightly faster sketch this time with a little less detail, trying to work out where the balance lies between definition and detail...
The worm itself was pretty simple, though I did take some influence from the art of Mike Mignola (though I'm not confident enough to try the super-heavy shading he does!), as were the orbs of flame above each of the creatures' heads.
The nest is a little messy, but one of the things I tried to do here was make sure the branches were recognisably from the Commiphora and Boswellia plants (source of myrrh and frankincence, respectively).

Had a bit of a cry today.
It's been really hard, the last couple of days, to figure out what's me being sick and what's me being tired and what's me being burned out and what's me being just lonely and it's this terrible self-feeding vortex of awful. The last couple of things I've posted don't seem to have been read, much, so I don't know if they're just bad, or all of my regular readers are just busy.
They could be bad - that's a real possibility. I didn't quite know what everyone meant by brainfog, talking about COVID, but I think I know what they mean, now. But the lack of anyone letting me know is really killing me today.
And I don't want to ask. Everyone I know seems to be running on less spoons than I am.
Anyway.
I sat in my bedroom today feeling so...drained, and uptight, and I had to wait a good two or three minutes before my body would even let me cry. So I sat and tried to have my cry, and then I put some frankincence and cinnamon oil in my diffuser and sent some people some prompts that I hope they like.
I'm so tired. And I don't know what to do about it.

i don't really talk about this a whole heap because i feel it's not the worst thing to experience in the world, but as an australian practitioner, it is isolating to be in the witchcraft community. i have seen barely anyone else who's aussie in my spaces, and almost every resource everywhere is based on northern hemisphere environments, plants, animals, etc. there is no easy way to being an australian witch, not in the same way as you would if you were in the northern hemisphere. usually you have to look very hard to find any kind of information about how to practice magic in an australian environment, and even then, it's usually likened to northern hemisphere counterparts. to this day i'm not sure if i'm comfortable with calling myself an "australian witch" purely due to the fact that this is ultimately what i have to pay for being on stolen land. and while i do reconnect with my italian-english immigrant background on a very intimate level, most folk practitioners DO advise me that folk magic starts with respecting what's immediately around you RIGHT IN THIS MOMENT. your environment, your community. i do not know how to connect with non-northern hemisphere plants. i don't even know what a kookaburra means when i hear it laugh (outside of being taught its folklore). is rosemary in australia more potent than its american counterpart due to the fact it's used in so much of aussie cooking? what about eucalyptus lollies clearing away any sinus issues? i wouldn't have a clue what anything means on a magical level. the point is, i want to connect not just with my ancestors, but with where i currently live. i feel i owe it to the land to incorporate it into my knowledge and practice and general love and appreciation.
anyway, rambling aside, i found this. this is still essentially "australian substitutions for northern hemisphere spell components" - but for what it's worth, it still helps to have some semblance of anything. i don't agree with every single comparison on the following lists, but for any aussie practitioner who happens to follow me and wants some way to connect with what they have available, this may be a good starting point for you. it's basic. really basic. and it's mostly just in relevance to a starting point in witchcraft specifically. but regardless, i hope it gives you as much hope as it did for me (all under the cut bc there's a lot of links). also to say the least i encourage individual research into folklore as well, it's stunning stuff. lastly, if you're from the northern hemisphere and happened to read this chonky post, thanks - i encourage you to learn about australia too, especially its history.
and lastly, i just discovered ayrmid sage. i plan to order some books as soon as i have the money, supposedly they're good.

I heard this perfume be described as 'tumblr grunge.'
Here is the description and notes:
This is your VANILLA ERA, embrace it. A scent of innocence and subversion, where vanilla is anything but beige. The correctness of vanilla absolute and white tulips interlude with riotous black amber, elusive iso e super, and spicy coffee been absolute. Heads will turn, hearts will break as this scent reigns for days, months and years.

I Just Love the Smell of Frankincense and Myrrh!
I just love the smell of frankincense and myrrh! ❤ These precious sacred resins have magical properties. ✨
Two primary active compounds found in myrrh, terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. 😊 Frankincense promotes regeneration of healthy cells, while being astringent. 👍
We use these beautifully fragrant ancient botanicals in our Marigold, Frankincense & Myrrh Moisturiser. 🏵️ Find out more at www.MuLondon.com/ingredients 🌿
Can you guess which of the ingredients pictured is frankincense and which one is myrrh? 🤔

Not a call or any kind of request, just a divine/angelkin tip: diffuse or smell Frankincense oil if you're stressed it is sooo calming, we use alot of essential oils at my house and there is one blend we have that is supposed to alleviate stress and anxiety, but it doesn't work as good for me as the Frankincence does I take our diffuser into my room and diffuse it like I even feel my wings relax
!!!
(i don’t actually know what frankincence smells like but this seems really nice!! I’ll have to try it :^))

Sleeping Well Balm
I rarely have headaches, but I sometimes have a hard time falling asleep and bouts of insomnia. My chemist, when I said I did not want sleeping draughts or anything like that, gave me an essential oil roll-on, and it helped heaps! In last month’s issue, The Simple Things provided the recipe for this Headache Relief Balm, which I prefer to call my Sleeping Well Balm! It does soothe a light migraine -my Dad will be happy to know we don’t immediately reach for the paracetamol anymore!- and it certainly helps you relax in bed and and lull you into a fine slumber! I don’t use it every night, but on Sunday nights, it has become a little ritual of mine. And I tend to wake up rested and in a good mood on Mondays since!
Be careful when using essential oils, though, do not use more than prescribed. And this balm is not suitable for children.
Ingredients (makes 50 millilitres/1.6 fluid ounces):
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon shea butter
1 tablespoon beeswax
10 drops peppermint essential oil
5 drops frankincence essential oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
2 drops rosemary essential oil
In a medium bowl, combine coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax. Fit bowl over a small saucepan of simmering water, to make a bain-marie, and heat over a low flame, stirring until completely melted.
Remove from the heat and add peppermint, frankincence, lavender and rosemary essential oils, stirring well to combine. Pour in a clean and sterelised container, Close with the lid, and allow to set, one hour. Then, store in a cool, dark place.
Gently rub a small amount of Sleeping Well Balm onto your temples to soothe a headache. You can also rub some on your wrists, neck, shoulders or behind the ears to help you sleep well.
