She is so attached to Alexia. She likes everyone but it's like none of them exist when Alexia's in the room

She grows up to play the exact same position as Alexia with just as much talent. Truly a pair of Ballon D'or winners

Her blankie is her favourite thing in the world after Alexia and it goes everywhere with her. She's also got a little dog toy that's meant to look like Nala because Alexia's heartbroken her two favourite girls never got to meet

Mija is absolutely a dog person. She loves all kinds of dogs but especially small yappy ones. Her first dog of her own is a Papillon that Alexia gets her called Mr Francis who literally has no brains but a lot of love to give

Alexia always gets Mija her own version of all the kits as soon as they're dropped because Mija loves them so much.

Every medal Alexia gets there's an obligatory 'Mija wearing the medal' photo and then when Mija is old enough to win her own medal there's an obligatory 'Alexia wearing the medal' photo

Mija can walk now but she prefers being carried and Alexia prefers to carry her because she loves having her baby in her arms

Alexia definitely has matching outfits that the two of them wear to gamedays and if there's one thing that will get Alexia active on social media it's teammates with her baby. If one of the team post a story with Mija in it, Alexia is straight away reposting and just gushing about how cute her kid is

They're always giving each other kisses and cuddles and they're super clingy and sweet

Lava Red Feather Blue: the perfume list

(I mention in the afterword of Lava Red Feather Blue that I can recommend perfumes to go with those described in the book. For my fellow perfumistas out there, here is that list, which is also on my website and is subject to change as I think of more.) For all of the scents listed here, or for any perfume at all, I highly recommend starting with a sample and not springing for a blind buy of a full bottle. Scents vary a great deal on each person’s skin, and to each person’s nose, and should be test-driven before one commits to a larger purchase. Some reliable sites where I’ve bought perfume samples include Luckyscent, Surrender to Chance, Olfactif, and The Perfumed Court. For Solstice Scents fragrances, though, you’ll likely only find them at the Solstice Scents site itself.

If you know of a perfume you think would fit well into this list, let me know! We can keep adding to the list. True perfume fanatics always want to try more scents!

Sia Fia’s realm: for Silver and Lunacy, described as island-harvested rose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, patchouli, incense, musk, and honey:

One of the top contenders that comes to mind for me is Absolue Pour le Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian…but it’s been discontinued! If you CAN find any to sample, I warn you that a fair number of people who smell it think it’s disgusting. The rest of us, however, find it highly sexy. This is often the case with the most carnal scents! MFK describes its notes as rose honey from Bulgaria, incense absolute, cumin, benzoin from Siam, and sandalwood.

Another possibility I love, heavy on the honey, is Bee by Zoologist Perfumes. It starts out like a freshly opened jar of orange blossom honey, then deepens into facets of mimosa, benzoin, sandalwood, incense, ginger, heliotrope, labdanum, tonka, and musk.

Yet another, more floral and hay-like but still rich with honey and carnality, is Tabac Tabou by Parfum d’Empire, which is advertised as having notes of immortelle, tobacco, narcissus, honey, grass, and musk.

If you want to go old-school carnal, look on eBay for a vintage bottle of Bal a Versailles by Jean Desprez. It’s usually easy to find, and is a yummy, powdery concoction of civet, resins, balsam, amber, vanilla, musk, sandalwood, orris root, rose, orange blossom, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and more.

For old-school carnal on the macho side, I love Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent (white bottle, not Body Kouros in the black bottle). A small dab will do—it’s potent! On my skin it’s both shower-clean and sexy-dirty, a mix I love. It’s got civet, honey, patchouli, aldehydes, leather, carnation, coriander, musk, oakmoss, artemisia, and other spices and florals.

And one more beauty, which is less about the honey and more about the rose, but still has a very “sexy boudoir” feel, is Salome by Papillon, a huge fan favorite in the indie perfume fandom, featuring jasmine, musks, Turkish rose, carnation, cumin, mosses, and tobacco.

Arlanuk’s realm: for Hunter’s Night, described as earth, stone, oakmoss, island redwood, cedar, vetiver, and a hint of wood smoke:

I suggest Runestone by Solstice Scents, which, according to the fragrance creator, contains aged patchouli, dirt, oakmoss, cedar, muhuhu, violet leaf absolute, leaves, vetiver, sandalwood, cypress, spruce, pine and very faint hints of lavender absolute, rosewood, rosemary, hinoki, spikenard and more. It has that “potting soil” feel that comes with patchouli, but is nicely tempered by greenery and stone, and when I smelled it, I thought, “This is what the forest in the fae realm smells like.”

Another good one worth trying is Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens, as a tribute to the pines that delineate Arlanuk’s territory. Its notes are pine needles, vetiver, sugary sap, laurel, fir balsam, frankincense, candied fruit, and spice.

Vowri’s realm: for Melancholia, notes of cold flowers in rain, iris, lilac, and the sadness of vintage perfume on old clothes:

Clearly the ideal choice here is a vintage perfume, especially the mega-classic L’Heure Bleue by Guerlain. Guerlain describes it as containing aniseed, bergamot, carnation, neroli, iris, violet, vanilla, benzoin, and tonka beans, but to the perfumistas of the world it is famous for its melancholy feel. Its name, after all, means “the blue hour.”

See also Après l'Ondée from the same house, which has similar notes to L’Heure Bleue but with more of a feel of rain on a garden—again, as its name suggests.

Another lovely vintage-based scent, which in my opinion would fit the bill for this section, is Pourpre d’Automne by Maison Violet. It has cool violet and iris at center stage, supported by rose, plum, peach, musk, benzoin, and oakmoss, all with an early-1900s powdery cosmetic atmosphere.

For the quest in general:

I’d feel remiss if I didn’t include Enchanted Forest by The Vagabond Prince. I mean, could its name get any more fitting? But its actual scent is ideal too, a chilly forest smell, mysterious and lovely and fairy-tale-ready, featuring blackcurrant, fir, red wine, wet green branches, pine needles, woods, and mosses.

Dryad by Papillon is another beautiful take on an enchanted forest, perhaps one in late summer, full of warm golden sunlight between the trees. It has notes of galbanum, bergamot, narcissus, clary sage, orris root, oakmoss, fruits, herbs, and vetiver.

Larkin remembers walking through the lemon orchard at the palace with his lover, back in the late 1700s. And citrus blossom scents were indeed popular in that century, in the perfumes of that time. (Perfume options were more limited then in general, as chemistry practices weren’t nearly as advanced as they are now—but on Eidolonia, who knows?) Therefore I think for nostalgia reasons he might like Fleurs de Citronnier by Serge Lutens, a lovely, gentle lemon blossom scent that also includes neroli, tuberose, and musk.

Larkin notices Merrick (and his car) smelling of leather and sweet spice early in their acquaintance. We can assume this is a Mirage Isle Perfumes scent he and Cassidy created. I haven’t given it a name, but I had in mind something like Cuir Ottoman by Parfum d’Empire. It’s a deliciously smooth, sweet leather scent, which also includes incense, jasmine, iris, benzoin, balsams, and resin.

Sui muri del primo covo dell’ex super latitante Matteo Messina Denaro, in vico San Vito a Campobello di Mazara (TP), i Carabinieri del Ros hanno trovato anche poster del Padrino e di Joker. Sensual perfumes for sterile times

Now that we should all be socially distancing, I’ve been keeping my spirits up by wearing fragrances I cannot wear to the office, to the theatre, to dinner, nowhere in public really, without risking offending someone. As I write this, I’m enjoying the many layers and rich depths of vintage Opium, an oriental par excellence. Ah! It’s so hard to stop sniffing my wrist and just type this post!

Salome by Papillon Perfumery

I know I’ve already included this in my highest femme list, but it is also true that I so rarely have the chance to wear this out. Salome’s reputation for being utterly filthy is well deserved. The perfume radiates a shimmering heat, its lush florals unfurling and releasing their scent mingling with cumin and spice and grounded by hyraceum and castoreum. It can be challenging to pull off and is best paired with silk and sable furs.

Epic Woman by Amouage

I could probably populate this list entirely with Amouage. The powerhouse delivers knockout fragrances where a single spritz will last hours. I had a difficult time debating which one to include. My favourites, Jubilation 25, a honourable descendant of Rochas’ Femme or the chilly gaze of Myths Woman? What about the powder bomb of Fate Woman? Or the intense, rich burn of Interlude Man? The fiery peppery woods of Journey Man? I settled on Epic Woman because it is so peculiar. All of the aforementioned fragrances may be very strong, but Epic Woman, with its sour opening with a tinge of dill pickle, is not a crowd pleaser. It’s just as opulent and complex as many of the older Amouages, but this sourness makes Epic Woman difficult, unexpected, and full of character which is just the kind of thing one appreciates most alone.

Absolue Pour le Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

APLS is an outlier from this house. This pissy, unctuous honey fragrance infused with florals and dusted with spices is one of the ultimate amber orientals on the market.  It doesn’t smell like you sprayed yourself with this fragrance so much as you smeared it on. It’s stunningly beautiful, absolutely offensive, and I love it!

Oudh Infini by Dusita

Oudh Infini walks a razor’s edge between the sheer beauty of a velvety red rose and a soft pile of dung at the zoo. Laotian oud lends a creaminess that softens its nose searing intensity. Expertly balanced and not for the faint of heart. Possibly my favourite rose oud.

Cuir de Russie by Chanel

This one is definitely easier to pull off in polite company, but with its chic, hard edged aldehydes, I find Cuir de Russie can still be challenging to wear out because it screams “perfume!” It’s also very horsey, and conjures in my mind the heat of a horse and its sweat underneath a saddle.

Okay so I was thinking about how Mija is absolutely a dog person.

She loves big dogs but her favourite is the small yappy ones which is why Alexia buys her Sir Francis the Papillon after Mija signs her first contract

She's sixteen when it happens and Sir Francis is so annoying to anyone who isn't a Putellas but Mija loves him and he loves being in either hers or Alexia's arms

“Me love you long time” is a phrase often used when referring to foreign Asian women and sex. It may or may not be explicitly associated with illicit sex but the clear underlying message is that the Asian woman's role is to sexually serve the man.

Everyone was horrified when Weevil said it during the first episode of Veronica Mars back then. Message boards and forums were discussing whether it was appropriate to have a teenager saying this line, that had a racist undertone. But many dismissed it and saying that it was a reference from the movie Full Metal Jacket.

These words were said by actress Papillon Soo Soo, who portrays a Vietnamese prostitute soliciting American GI-s, in the Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket that came out in 1987. The line is also a part of Black Eyed Peas song called “Love You A Long Time”. The line is now a part of popular culture, especially in the USA.

Rob Thomas is well known for copy-paste lines or dialogues from other movies. He called it a homage, not a direct copy. As this blog recently mentioned, he liked to “borrowed” or appropriate plots/lines from his favorite movies. So much so, sometimes the meaning from the original movies lost its origins.

Francis Capra often uses it as a signature and iconic greet for the fans: “Remember guys, Weevil love you a long time 💖🤎❣️” It’s doubtful that Francis knew where the line originated from, but he thinks that the dialogue is fun. But where do we draw the sand here?

Many of Veronica Mars fans doesn’t know the origin of the line, because they have never seen the film. Also, arguably that the line of dialogue is to serves a purpose that Veronica was a young woman in a man’s world, and the only man who might be her ally was a leather jacket bad boy, who still treated her at the beginning, as an object.

But Veronica Mars is always been full of controversy with storylines, notably with rape. It’s one thing to write something to highlight those controversies, another thing to write those controversial takes as just part of pop cultures. In this case, it seems Rob Thomas only writes homages.

Many also said that one line quip is harmless (who decides that?). It is considered to be political Western colonization and still physically rampant in the pants of many Americans/Westerners. The desire to sexually possess, conquer, and at times humiliate a subservient Asian woman permeates the pop culture. “If we treat it like it’s nothing, then we are being complacent to racism, sexism, and here most pertinently, the repercussions of cultural imperialism.” According to Northern California Attorney Sunny Woan and author of the abstract, “White Sexual Imperialism,” tells how this is another example of how covert racism appears in mainstream America, even if it’s under the guise of forms of entertainment.

This particular line in Veronica Mars is a homage to one of the most controversial movies of all time that depicting racism and sexism against Asians. In the show, it was said by a Latino male teen character to a female teen character, at the beginning of one of the best first episodes of VMars. But the impact, unknowingly, stays for almost two decades (within the VMars community) when everyone associated this line as Rob Thomas’s smart written dialogue and being used as a part of a likable character. Should people acknowledge that it actually caused harm?
