Sci Fi Month 4:April and the Extraordinary World
For the next review of Sci Fi Month ,I shall look at an animated film that is a Franch/Belgium / Canadian co production:April and the Extraordinary World. Also it is the English version I watched ,but used the frenchpostercuasethats theone Icouldfind
This 2015 film takes place in an alternate history of 1941 where a majority of the leading scientists have dispeared or are forced to build weapons for the French government for a war between France and America over resources ,leaving the world still in the steam age ,where April Franklin (Angela Galuppo),lastin a line of scientists has found a serum ,and is now the target of both a disgraced cop Gaspar Pizoni (Paul Giamatti ).....And the two figures (Susan Sarrandon and JK SImmons ) responsible for the kidnapped scientists
I had a lot offun with this .Alternate histories are fun and I am a sucker for steampunk .The animation is great ,good forboth action and comedy ,with some great vehical designs and theconcept for the villains are very unique ,visuallly and conceptually
The characters are solid ,all archetypes but solid one ,April as someone who is desperately trying to hang onto the past (Be it being in denile about how ill her cat Darwin is or trying to find her lost family ) to the exclusion of anything new ,Julius is the conartist who works for Pizoni but fallsfor April ,Pizoni is the soewhat comedic foil detrermined to relive hisformer glory ,and Darwin is a talking cat (Due to an experiment ) who tries to nudge April and Julius together .My favrite characters I cant talk about ,and that the antagonists, all I will say is they are a couple who have diffrent goals ,one well intentioned the other is a bit more bloodthirsty .Also Aprils family arealso very interesting
Voice cast is solid ,mix of Canadian actors and Hollywood celebs ,I think the best performances go to Tony Hale (Darwin), JK Simmons and Susan Sarrandon (As the antagonists ).Thereare some joke and lines that didntwork, that felt likedubisms but I am not sure .Most of the humor worked though
Overall I had a lotoffunwith thisfilmand it is agem that I think is worth a watch

Spookley and the Christmas Kittens (2019)
This is a TV special made for 2-5 year olds, I would guess, based on the bright animation, super happy characters, and songs with lessons. And I'm not going to sugarcoat it, these characters are weird. On top of the square pumpkin and hyper realistic green cat, there's a scarecrow who's probably not supposed to be creepy, but he kinda is. All of that aside, this movie had me feeling things for these rainbow cats.
Holiday Hill Farm is home to Spookley (Sonja Ball) the square pumpkin, and his friend Jack Scarecrow (Craig Francis), and a bunch of other talking vegetables. They're preparing for a Christmas Extravaganza when a green cat whose collar says Mistletoe (Daniel Brochu) falls in. Mistletoe doesn't remember where he came from or how to get home. Spookley thinks they can use the charm on his collar to help him, but when an owl snatches the collar and flies off, Mistletoe runs after it into the woods by himself. A winter storm is rolling in, so Spookley goes after Mistletoe to make sure he gets back safely, but none of Spookley's vegetable friends want to help.
Mistletoe finds the collar, but the charm fell off! He finds some shelter from the storm under some sticks, but he's not feeling very hopeful. Then Leon (Brian Froud) the raccoon appears in a Santa hat with a big red bag. Leon convinces Mistletoe to exchange his collar for whatever is in the red bag. Mistletoe does, but he is upset to find that the bag has three kittens inside, Scat (Holly Gauthier Frankel), Scram (Angela Galuppo), and Shoo (Sonja Ball). Shoo is my favorite of the kittens, not that it matters.
Spookley finds Mistletoe and the kittens, but the storm keeps getting worse. All the tracks back to the farm have disappeared. But they can't stay out in the storm because the shelter caved in. Back at the farm, Jack Scarecrow is trying to go looking for Spookley, but snow piled up in front of the door.
I was impressed with the cohesiveness of this story. Yeah, the songs aren't great, and yeah, there's not a ton of character development. But this is a very tolerable young children's movie. Overall, I give it 3.5 stars for originality, tolerability, and for having a magical raccoon.

Racetime (2018)
I love the look of Racetime enough that should I happen upon its predecessor, Snowtime!, I'll watch it. Even if I had viewed it beforehand, I doubt it would've made me more enthusiastic about this sequel, unfortunately. Ultimately, it’s just ok, a slice of entertainment for the kids only.
Nothing means more to Frankie Four-Eyes (voiced by Lucinda Davis) than the annual sled race during which his friend Sophie (also Davis) pilots the vehicle he’s designed. When they are defeated by newcomers Zac (Noel Fisher) and Charlie (Noel Fisher), Frankie, Sophie, and their friends are all taken aback until it’s revealed their rivals cheated. It’s time for a rematch.
The film’s biggest asset is its visuals. The characters are all distinct and lively. The colors are bright and the textures, in particular, make it stand out. Many CG animated films just sorta blend together - the result of an assembly line ruled by someone who crunched the numbers and said: “it’s cheaper than hand-drawn animation so let’s go with this”. That doesn’t feel like it’s the case with this Canadian production.
In terms of story, Racetime is basic; an elongated Saturday morning cartoon whose characters are defined by a single, exaggerated trait. The nerdy kid is really nerdy, the twins are mirror images who finish each other’s sentences, the muscle basically begins every sentence with “duh….”, etc. The attempts to flesh out the racers often lead nowhere. Zac's mean streak stems from his loneliness but the parents who dumped him in the small snowbound Canadian town never show up. Actually, no adults ever appear. There’s little attempt to break the mold which means all but the smallest viewers will know exactly where everything is headed minutes in.
There’s not much to Racetime until the final event. The young audience members yelled in excitement and hissed at the screen at the appropriate times, telling me they were invested. Meanwhile, my mind wandered. The final competition is a “no holds barred”, “anything goes” race but we’re supposed to get angry when Zac begins pulling out “villainous” gadgets like sawblades and gravel to impede his opponent. If there are no rules, then doing that kind thing isn’t cheating, so what’s the deal? Really, it’s Frankie’s fault for not anticipating these tactics and going to a gunfight armed with nothing if you ask me.
There are a couple of songs planted throughout, none of which are memorable or noteworthy. Maybe that isn’t the case in the original French version (which, unfortunately, wasn’t offered at the theater I went to). This is one you should be watching on TV or at most, paying to rent. $3 is what I spent on my ticket and that’s an appropriate amount if the kids are clamoring to leave the house. (Theatrical version on the big screen, March 30, 2019)

FISHTRONAUT (PEIXONAUTA)
@superkingofpriderock @themousefromfantasyland @gravedangerahead @amalthea9 @metropolitan-mutant-of-ark @the-blue-fairie @sabugabr
Fishtronaut is an enviro-friendly animated mystery series in which Secret Agent Fishtronaut goes on slimy, furry and gooey adventures with his best friends, gal pal Marina and monkey fella Zeek. Originally a brazilian show titled Peixonauta, it was imported to the United States by Discovery Kids.
The series tells the story of Fishtronaut, a fish in a spacesuit, similar to a reverse scuba gear, which allows him to fly and breathe out of water. He is a secret agent who, along with his friends Marina and Zeek, unravels the mysteries occurring in the Smiling Trees Park. They solve the mysteries with the help of a P.O.P. (Primary Objective Pod), a magical multicolored ball containing clues vital to the mission. Viewers are invited to dance along with the heroes to a tune, so that the P.O.P. will open and release the clues inside.
Targeting 3- to 7-year-olds, the series explores the world's many mysteries above and below water in a unique and entertaining way.
In the international market, the series is marketed by the names of Peztronauta (Spanish) or Fishtronaut (English). After success on TV, Peixonauta was produced as a play called Peixonauta to TV Theatre, which premiered on 9 January 2011 in Rio de Janeiro. On 9 November 2012, a movie titled Peixonauta – Agente Secreto da O.S.T.R.A. (in English: Fishtronaut – Secret Agent of O.Y.S.T.E.R.) was released.
The show is set in the Smiling Trees Park, where elephants, monkeys and other animals from around the world roam free. Children are welcome to explore the forest and climb the trees, or ride a sub to the bottom of the cove and its colorful reef. In the park is Quiet Lake, which is fed by a long river. The river also extends beyond the lake into a sandy cove along the ocean.
ts characters include:
Secret Agent Fishtronaut (voiced by Dawn Ford) — (Portuguese: Peixonauta) – An anthropomorphic big goldfish. He wears a Bubblex suit that allows him to fly out of water. It also has numerous tools useful during missions. He is always watching his friends Marina and Zeek, and investigating the problems of the Smiling Trees Park in order to solve them. He lives at the bottom of Quiet Lake, though he spends more time out on the surface with his friends. He is also an aspiring inventor, creating machines generally useful to the park. He usually communicates through a video screen fitted into his suit.
Marina (voiced by Angela Galuppo) — (full name:Marina Green) – A bright and curious brown-haired 10-year-old human girl who is also Fishtronaut's best friend. Every day, she proves to be a valuable member of the park's spy team. Whenever she and Fishtronaut happen to be apart, she can always use her trusty Aquawatch to stay in touch.
Zeek (voiced by Terrence Scammell) — (Portuguese:Zico) – A tween-age monkey who may love to monkey around, but his awesome tree-climbing abilities and finely-tuned sniffer make him invaluable to the team. Though he does come up with the most implausible of theories and even causes the occasional mix-up, his intentions are nothing but the best.
The Twins – Billy and Mac (Portuguese: Pedro e Juca) are Marina's rascal cousins. Their shenanigans tend to get them (and the park) in a heap of trouble, but they are harmless and have only the best intentions.
Dr. Green (Portuguese: Dr. Jardim) (Voiced by Rick Jones) – Marina and the twins' grandfather who is also the wise vet/caretaker of Smiling Trees Park. He runs the park's Animal Hospital, which was built in a pod of a giant beanstalk. Whenever Marina's stuck, she knows Grandpa can help her find the answer.
Rosy Barb (Portuguese: Agente Rosa) (Voiced by Holly Gauthier-Frankel) – A S.E.A. agent who loves color and enjoys decorating the ocean bottom until it's just right. She knows the cove inside out and whenever Fishtronaut's on dry land, he can always check in with Rosy via the Web Clam.
Happy Plumb (Portuguese: Chumbo Feliz) (Voiced by Terrence Scammell) – A wise old fish who likes living quietly at the bottom of the cove and knows just about all there is. No one knows how long he's been around, but it's a very long time, indeed. He remembers the very beginnings of Smiling Trees Park. Whenever Fishtronaut is stumped, he knows Happy Plumb can point him in the right direction, that is, if he can decipher Plumb's riddle of an answer.
