Still Life with Fruit and Crockery on a Turkish Carpet by Francesco Fieravino (genaamd Il Maltese), Museum of the Netherlands

Turkey Carpet, 1650-1680 (after Francesco Fieravino), Giclée on canvas, 128x136cm / Gordon Cheung 2017 --- Unknown Knowns @EdelAssanti, London until 15 April - The romantic language used to describe a still life is of transient beauty, futile materialism and fragile mortality. It's also a display of wealth, power and status. Yet it rarely, if ever, reveals how it might have accrued these symbols of luxury. The Dutch Golden Age is perhaps the birth of Modern Capitalism with the rise of the first global company called East India Trade Company with militarised trade routes, colonisation and slavery. The Dutch Golden Age Still life genre ideologically launders its darker history of civilisation. By 'glitching' the photographs of the paintings that reorders the pixels it metaphorically suggests revising historical amnesia and to unweave the narratives. (at Edel Assanti)
