A nineteenth-century mystic marriage counselor and her guardian angel battle the Inquisitor of Smut in this biographical historical novel based on a true story.
Censored Angel: Anthony Comstock’s Nemesis By Joan Koster
Brilliant, corseted, and haunted by spirits from the Borderlands, Ida Craddock turns her back on the constrictions of Victorian society and strikes out on her own, becoming a mystic marriage counselor. Sharing what she views as essential sexual knowledge puts her in the crosshairs of Anthony Comstock, the nation’s Anti-Obscenity Postal Inspector. She vows to bring him down. He promises to silence her forever. With prison looming, Ida and her guardian angels must prepare for a battle they may not be able to win.
CENSORED ANGEL is based on the life of mystic marriage counselor and First Amendment defender, Ida C. Craddock, the woman who helped bring down Anthony Comstock, of Comstock Law infamy, and whose defense led to the formation of the Free Speech league, antecedent of the ACLU.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Freedom to Read Foundation

¿Una monja sexóloga new ager? 👌🏻 My cup of tea!

MJ Porter Royal Women Who Made England #NonFiction #TheTenthCentury #ForgottenWomen #WomenInHistory #BlogTour #TheCoffeePotBookClub @coloursofunison @cathiedunn
FEATURED AUTHOR: MJ PORTER I’m delighted to welcome MJ Porter again as the featured author in The Coffee Pot Book Club Blog Tour held March 19th – 21st, 2024. MJ Porter is the author of the non-fiction book, The Royal Women Who Made England: The Tenth Century in Saxon England, published by Pen and Sword on 30th January 2024 hardback UK / epub direct from publisher / 4th April 2024 US and kindle edition (237 pages) Below are highlights of The Royal Women Who Made England, MJ Porter’s author bio, and a snippet from the book. Tour Schedule Page: https://thecoffeepotbookclub.blogspot.com/2024/02/blog-tour-the-royal-women-who-made-england-by-mj-porter.html HIGHLIGHTS: THE ROYAL WOMEN WHO MADE ENGLAND The Royal Women Who Made England: The Tenth Century in Saxon England by MJ Porter Blurb: Throughout the tenth century, England, as it would be recognized today, formed. No longer many Saxon kingdoms, but rather, just England. Yet, this development masks much in the century in which the Viking raiders were seemingly driven from England’s shores by Alfred, his children and grandchildren, only to return during the reign of his great, great-grandson, the much-maligned Æthelred II. Not one but two kings would be murdered, others would die at a young age, and a child would be named king on four occasions. Two kings would never marry, and a third would be forcefully divorced from his wife. Yet, the development towards ‘England’ did not stop. At no point did it truly fracture back into its constituent parts. Who then ensured this stability? To whom did the witan turn when kings died, and children were raised to the kingship? The royal woman of the House of Wessex came into prominence during the century, perhaps the most well-known being Æthelflæd, daughter of King Alfred. Perhaps the most maligned being Ælfthryth (Elfrida), accused of murdering her stepson to clear the path to the kingdom for her son, Æthelred II, but there were many more women, rich and powerful in their own right, where their names and landholdings can be traced in the scant historical record. Using contemporary source material, The Royal Women Who Made England can be plucked from the obscurity that has seen their names and deeds lost, even within a generation of their own lives. Buy Links: Universal Buy Link: https://books2read.com/TheRoyalWomenWhoMadeEngland Publisher Link: https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/The-Royal-Women-Who-Made-England-Hardback/p/24395 AUTHOR BIO: MJ PORTER MJ Porter is the author of over fifty fiction titles set in Saxon England and the era before the tumultuous events of 1066. Raised in the shadow of a strange little building and told from a young age that it housed the long-dead bones of Saxon kings, it’s little wonder that the study of the era was undertaken at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The Royal Women of the Tenth Century is a first non-fiction title. It explores the ‘lost’ women of this period through the surviving contemporary source material. It stemmed from a frustration with how difficult it was to find a single volume dedicated to these ‘lost’ women and hopes to make it much easier for others to understand the prestige, wealth and influence of the women of the royal House of Wessex. Author Links: Website Blog Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Instagram Threads Bluesky Pinterest Book Bub Amazon Author Page Goodreads TikTok LinkTree SNIPPET: THE ROYAL WOMEN WHO MADE ENGLAND The royal women of the long tenth century is an opportunity to delve into what is known about these women and the time in which they lived and ensure that their story is told, as well as that of their slightly better-known male counterparts. It is also an opportunity to place them into this context of seeming stability and to assign them a part other than that of mothers and grandmothers to the next generation in the proceedings of this long and turbulent period, although, admittedly, it is as mothers and grandmothers that they seem to have truly discovered their abilities to govern. There is no surviving contemporary image of any of the royal women of the tenth century. These women are not only difficult to ‘find’ in the written sources, but they are also entirely faceless, apart from in the words of their contemporaries or near contemporaries. But, as far as is known, there are only images of King Athelstan that survive, in manuscript 183, folio IV Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, and also King Edgar, in London, British Library Cotton Vespasian A.viii, fol. 2v. And we seem to have only one physical item associated with these women: priestly vestments which may well have been stitched by Lady Ælfflæd’s hands (the second wife of Edward the Elder) and that survive in Durham as part of the collection of items linked with the tomb of St Cuthbert, the Northumbrian saint associated with Lindisfarne. Maud Stevens Wagner (1877-1961) She was a circus artist and the first professional American tattoo artist. She was born in Kansas, and dedicated herself to contortionism in different traveling circus shows. It was in one of them where she met Gus Wagner; "The most tattooed man in the United States." In 1907, Maud began a relationship with Gus Wagner and he taught her his trade, so she started in the tattoo technique and entered a world that had been exclusive of men, becoming the first female tattoo artist in the US. The couple left the circus and went to work in fairs where they exhibited their designs and made tattoos with the technique 'spike and poke', which comes from indigenous tribes and consists of using a sharp object that can enter the skin and give a puncture with ink so that it penetrates and thus generate a permanent drawing. Maud and Gus Wagner never used machines to make their designs. Unfortunately, there are no records of Maud's designs, but drawings of her husband survived. In a time when tattoos were not well seen because they were considered wild art or typical of lower classes, Maud broke the prejudices in a field dominated by men. #MaudStevensWagner #MaudStevens #tattoo #tattooart #tattooartist #womeninhistory #feminism #feminist #historyofwomen #artist #forgottenwomen #forgottenwomeninhistory #art

👸🏻@booksthatmatteruk Unboxing: Forgotten Women🙇🏻♀️ . Hey, guys! How’s your Saturday? I hope you’re doing well! Today I’m going to share another book box I received this week, which was also my first one from an indie feminist company based in the U.K., so hope you enjoy! . The March theme of Books that Matter box is FORGOTTEN WOMEN, perfect for the International Women’s Day this month. I absolutely loved the illustration of the box as well as the three art prints featuring Murasaki Shikibu, June Jordan, and Su Qing, all of who later became famous writers around the world. This box also came with a badge set made exclusively for the box, with beautifully simple design of some historical empresses such as Wu Zetian, Hatshepsut, and Theodora. There was also a nice books-that-matter bookmark along with the book of the month, THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD by Zora Neale Hurston. The glorious copy was from @viragopress and honestly, I was blown away by its gorgeousness!! . What’s more, this box only cost me £20 including international shipping, which was a great deal when it comes to book boxes. ☺️ . All in all, Books that Matter is a rather simple yet delicate book box from a lovely indie store, and I will definitely RECOMMEND it! I’m satisfied with the items and the book, though my package came a little damaged due to the lack of protection. Anyway, if you’re on a tight budget but want to treat yourself with something bookish, go give @booksthatmatteruk a try! 😉 . 🙃Do you consider yourself a feminist? #history matters. #womenartists #teresaries #marktwain #Repost @jenniferhiggie (@get_repost) ・・・ Teresa Ries sculpting Mark Twain in her studio in Vienna in 1897. The following is an excerpt from a fascinating piece on theartblog.org 'The forgotten women artists of Vienna 1900' by Andrea Kirsh. Link in bio! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨Theresa Ries (1874-1956) was kicked out of the Moscow Academy of Art for talking back to a professor. She moved to Vienna where the first exhibition of her sculpture attracted the attention of the Emperor and brought Ries overnight fame at the age of twenty-one. The work depicted a young, mischievous witch, nude and seated on the ground as she cuts her toe-nails. Klimt asked her to exhibit with the Secessionists and she sent work to the 1900 Paris World’s Fair and the 1911 World’s Fair in Rome, where she was invited by both Russia and Austria. The Prince of Lichtenstein gave Ries a grand suite of rooms next to his picture gallery to use as her studio, which she inaugurated with a ten-year survey of her work. Ries was effective at self-promotion – the critic Karl Kraus complained that her exhibitions received too much publicity – and framed her own story by publishing a memoir in 1928. Her studio was Aryanized in 1938, after which she worked elsewhere in Vienna until 1942, when she left for good. Post-war Vienna ignored Ries’ contribution, as it did with so many of its Jewish population. Many of the women artists in Vienna were Jewish, and the perception that certain artists’ associations and schools were primarily Jewish insured their obliteration both as institutions and as part of the historical record. #teresaries #forgottenwomen #bowdown (at New York, New York)

Whenever I get sad/mad about certain things happening in the world or people inserting their unsolicited and uninformed “opinion” on social media, I always go back to reading. Reading about women. Their stories. Their passion. Their love. Their pain. Their strength. Their artistry. Their knowledge. Their fearlessness. And, I hope that some day my books, my work, will do the same for a young girl or woman that books have done for me. ♥️ . . . . #bookstagram #books #bookshelf #bookish #bookworm #booklove #booklover #bookishlove #bookgram #bookaholic #booksbywomen #authorslife #authorlife #authorgram #writerslife #writerlife #writergram #amreading #amwriting #readersofinstagram #feminist #thefutureisfemale #girlgang #empowerwomen #coffee #forgottenwomen #freshflowers #womanpower #selfcare #write https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt9AgAdBQnR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1f44o54nzkmil
