Like all other fruits, bananas are some of the healthiest options for snacks and meals alike. Bananas are very low in calories—a medium sized banana contains only 86 calories! A large banana contains 162 calories, and you can make a banana milk shake for a mere 140 calories. Even though bananas are low enough in calories to be considered healthy, they also contain enough calories to be considered a light meal, or even an extremely filling snack.
It is for this very reason that athletes are the banana’s biggest fans. According to research, eating just two bananas can provide an athlete with enough energy for a 90 minute, intense workout. The three natural sugars that the banana contains (sucrose, fructose, and glucose), as well as its fiber content, and provide an instant boost of energy that is long lasting.
No Nonsense, Just Nutrients
Bananas contain many of the nutrients that the body needs every day. The nutrition facts show that bananas contains potassium and dietary fiber, as well as 15% of the body’s daily requirement of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body to heal infections and produce iron and red blood cells. Potassium is known to reduce the risk of stoke and hypertension.
A banana contains 26% of your body’s daily requirement of Vitamin B6, 4% of the daily requirement for Vitamin B3, 5% of the requirement for Vitamin B2, and 3% of the daily requirement for Vitamin A. It also contains more digestible carbohydrates than any other fruit. Though it contains no label with nutrition facts, it is safe to say that the banana is an extremely healthy selection.
What It Lacks
Part of what makes the banana such an appealing snack is what its nutrition facts lack. The banana contains no saturated fats, and no sodium. What the banana does not contain is just as much a part of what makes it healthy.
