One of the blessings of the scriptures is that they help us learn from other people’s mistakes.

Seeing hundreds of years of Jaredite history in a few chapters makes it easy to spot the lessons: Generally speaking, when the kings are righteous, the people prosper. When the kings are wicked, the people suffer.

It would appear that many Jaredites followed their king’s example—for either good or bad. Some of the kings may have been religious leaders, too, which would have made their personal unrighteousness even more damaging.”

We are seeing this all over the world. Some world leaders say they follow Christ while making policies that go against Christ’s teachings and they are publicly living their lives in ways Christ warned us against. They are acting as world leaders and religious leaders while living in wickedness.

The most important thing we can do is to personally follow Christ. We can try to elect righteous leaders, but the only thing we can truly control is ourselves. Love radically as Christ loved. Follow Christ’s Gospel, not someone’s interpretation of His teachings.
