The coffee shop was filled with an array of people overflowing onto the polished wooden tables which cascaded with chatter and laughter.
Christmas decorations adorned the walls and golden tinsel had been carefully taped along the ceilings. A pretty garland of lush red berries and deep green holly hung below the counters and on top of the cakes. Mistletoe had been appended below the entrance door (an incentive for couples that were in a romantic mood.) A small green Christmas tree stood on the counter next to the till and was embellished with a variety of colourful quaint trinkets and baubles.
The fireplace, which had been lit to combat the unforgiving snowy weather was thriving in the heat of the fire, its ruby red flames licking the logs provided and enveloping anything in its path. Although wild and untamed, the fire still seemed to dance in a captivating manner. The bright yellows and oranges meandered with the reds creating a powerful hue which constantly changed and shifted in the light.
In front of you, an arrangement of freshly baked cakes had just been deposited on the counters. Warm gingerbread cookies, sea-salted gift-shaped caramel swirls and Christmas tree brownies decorated with white spiralling icing all lay in front of you. The sweet and irresistible flavours of spiced cinnamon and aromatic chocolate wafted leisurely up your nose.
You heard the bell of the front door jingle, indicating the entrance of a new customer, and being pulled back into reality, you looked up and saw a familiar-looking face.
A man with maroon hair tired loosely back in a ponytail, vibrant, emerald green eyes and the hint of a smile tugging at his mouth sauntered towards the counters.
“May I have the spiced gingerbread latte?”
You raised your eyebrow “Suprised to see you here, I thought you had that assignment on the history of criminology to complete?” Veering around the counter, you stepped towards the espresso machine.
Heizou nodded.
“I still need to start it, but I needed a break from the same environment and I wanted to visit you so I figured I could revise here.”
Swiftly measuring out and smoothing the dark coffee grinds in the portafilter, you tapped lightly on it and tamped by pressing into the espresso grounds. You apacely inserted the porta filler back into the machine and pressed the gauge button, watching as the previously dust-like coffee grinds transformed into liquid which poured and submerged into the latte glass.
Laying his arm on the counter, Heizou quirked an eyebrow. “When does your shift end?”
Hearing his voice, You glanced up at him and sighed.
“Two hours, unfortunately.”
You quickly grabbed the milk from the mini fridge below the coffee machine, pouring it into the milk jug. Then you turned back towards the espresso machine with the milk in hand and pulled down on the steam arm into the jug. You watched as the jug replenished itself with steam which overflowed out of the container and floated torpidly up in the air.
Heizou’s brows creased hearing your unenthusiastic response.
“You don’t seem too happy about this job.”
Wiping your hand with a handkerchief, you turned quickly back towards him.
“Well, I need the money for university funds and bills.”
You spun back towards the coffee cup adding the espresso first and mixing it with a bag of gingerbread flavouring into the mug. You began to pour the frothed milk into the coffee lowering the milk and steeping your angle to swirl it with the milk. Lastly, you grabbed the cinnamon shaker and tapped lightly onto it as the cinnamon sprinkled onto the coffee.
Tucking the loose strand of hair behind your ear and brushing off the coffee granules on your apron, you handed Heizou his coffee.
“A spiced gingerbread latte, hope you enjoy it.”
Heizou beamed, the dimples on his face revealing themselves.
“Why thank you.”
Hearing him say that, a warm smile spread across your face. However, you were quickly pulled away to attend the next person in line. In a momentary glance, you caught sight of Heizou and conveyed your regret with a subtle expression of "I'm busy" and "sorry" Heizou returned your silent apology with a reassuring nod and a mouthed "No worries.”
As you worked diligently, Heizou watched you with a grin that radiated pride. For a brief moment, you disappeared behind the counters, leaving Heizou to take in the coffee shop's ambience. He gazed at the glittering decorations, the colourful atmosphere, and the lights that hung from the ceiling. Holding his drink in hand, he scanned the wooden tables, searching for one that was unoccupied. When he found an empty table, he strolled over to it, pulled a sleek laptop from his bag, and settled into the chair.
I suppose I’ll have to start studying at some point.
Sipping his drink, he started to type.

Darkness had unbeknownst crept upon you. The sun had descended beyond the horizon; a blanket of darkness plummeted upon the sky. From the windows of the coffee shop, the world outside was hardly discernible - only the vague outlines of objects could be seen and deep shadows swooped the trees and buildings, smothering them in temporary darkness. The only sources of light were the newly lit street lamps which framed the snow-covered roads and the twinkling stars above, adorning the sky with speckled patterns.
Once a bustling hub of activity and laughter, the coffee shop now lay empty, save for one individual who remained seated, their laptop resting upon the table. The silence was only broken by the low hum of the coffee machine and the sound of fingers tapping away at the keyboard.
As the clock struck 7 pm, signalling the end of your shift, you carefully removed your work badge and placed it in your pocket. Dusting your hands off, you neatly folded your apron and set it down on the counter. You glanced around the nearly empty café and noticed that only Heizou remained. You smiled as you made your way over to him.
“Did you… wait for my shift to end?”
As soon as he heard the sound of your voice, he swiftly turned his face away from the screen and shifted his gaze towards you. His eyes met yours, and for a brief moment, everything else seemed to fade away.
“Mhm.”
He looked back up at you. And in a matter-of-fact tone, he commented“You look stunning today, by the way.”
Despite knowing Heizou for so long, you didn’t expect the sudden compliment and felt a sudden rush of heat from your ears. Instinctively, you pulled the strands of your hair down and tugged them over your ears.
Gaining your composure, you smirked "Of course I’m stunning," you flipped your hair back with your hands.
He closed his laptop lid promptly and slipped it into his bag. His eyes gleamed with a hint of mischief, and his lips curved into a smug smile.
“Are you…blushing?" his tone was laced with a sense of satisfaction and playfulness.
Immediately your masked confidence fell, and about to deny this allegation you opened your mouth to speak, but before you had a chance; Heizou pushed his chair back and stood up from the table “It’s dark outside. We should probably head back to campus soon.”
You nodded.
“Let me put my jacket on.”
You reached for your jacket hanging on the back of your chair. You slipped your arms into the sleeves and pulled the jacket over your body. Hastily, you zipped it up to the top, ensuring that you were well-covered and protected from the chilly air and snow.
You glanced back at Heizou, a look of “I’m ready” in your eyes as he pulled out his hand for you to take. You accepted it and looked outside.
“Let’s go.”
As you both approached the door, you felt a sudden tug on your hand. Looking back, you noticed that Heizou had come to an abrupt halt, causing him to stop in his tracks.
You stared back at him, the words “What are you doing?” About to exit your mouth. You stopped. He was looking up at the wooden frame of the door where the vibrant leaves of the mistletoe hung.
He looked back at you, a smile stretching upon his face.
“Would you like to kiss under the mistletoe?” his question was direct.
You glanced up at the mistletoe, then back at the man in front of you. His big green eyes glittered in the darkness, and a hopeful smile on his face.
You nodded. A soft smile radiated on your face.
Before you had time to react, Heizou leaned forward and embraced you. His heartbeat was thumping loudly against your own. His lips were feathery and cushioned they were smooth and soft and gentle. His hands clasped you and your heart throbbed faster, your head was buzzing, feeling your cheeks grow hot once more. With your eyes closed, you felt his mellow breath against yours, his hair lightly tickling your neck, his eyes half-lidded, eyelashes tickling your face. And then slowly, he stepped back, his face beaming and equally as red as yours.
For a moment, you both stood in silence. Not knowing what to say. The gentle sound of snow falling outside could be heard, accompanied by the temporary howling of the wind as it rustled the branches of the trees.
You looked back at him, with your cheeks still flushing red, and you rubbed the back of your neck. “We should really start heading to campus now, it’s getting late.”
“I agree.”
As you pushed the door of the cafe open, a harsh gust of wind slapped your face and penetrated through your skin, sending a sharp prick all over your body. Its icy fingers seemed to crawl into your bones, making you shudder. You quickly wrapped your coat tighter around your body in a desperate attempt to ward off the chill and find some warmth. "It's freezing out here," you shivered.
“Yes, but look up.” he tapped your shoulder, and gently, Heizou turned your head so you could see what he was pointing at.
The night sky was alive with falling snow, each flake gliding down as if performing a delicate dance amongst the stars. The snowflakes landed ever so softly, wrapping the the ground beneath in a blanket of pure white. The warm glow of the lamps along the path cast a shimmering light upon the snow, illuminating the way ahead. As you walked hand in hand with Heizou, gentle snowflakes landed gracefully upon your nose, eliciting a small laugh from you. Feeling his hand tighten around yours, you both continued your journey home, the snowflakes falling steadily around you like a serene, calming melody.

After wandering for a while, you finally arrived at the campus. Heizou had stepped alongside you up the stairs to your dorm until the two of you reached it. You inserted the key into the lock and turned it, feeling a satisfying click as the door unlocked. As you pushed the door open, you turned back to face Heizou and offered him a soft, appreciative smile.
You reached out your hand and gently pulled him towards you, feeling the heat of his body against yours. As you leaned in, you pressed your lips softly against his cheek, savoring the comforting sensation that spread through your body. The moment was fleeting, and you pulled away just as quickly as you had drawn him in.
“Merry Christmas Heizou.”
He grinned.
“Merry Christmas.”

coffee-chocolate mousse with a lemon confit insert and a coffee icecream with caramelized hazelnuts
because @silenceandiblog asked, here are the recipes, for probably six people:
lemon confit
- 50g lemon peel
- 150g lemon juice
- 75g sugar
carefully peel the lemon, so that you don't have any of the white parts. put the zests into a small pot, fill it with water halfway and bring to a boil. blanch the lemon peel for a minute. sieve them and repeat two times (this will reduce the bitterness). once you've blanched the lemon peel three times, put them into a pot, add the lemon juice and sugar and let it cook for 40-50 minutes. fill the hot mixture in a marmelade glass.
if you want to serve this the way i did, you can fill some of the lemon confit into a silicone mould (mine contained 30ml per cavity) and freeze it for at least three hours.
coffee mousse:
- 4g gelatine (note: i used this much gelatine because i wanted to fill it into a silicone mould which means the mousse had to be a bit more stable compared to being served in a glass. if you want to serve it differently, you can definitely reduce the amount of gelatine to at least 2g or maybe even go without it completely)
- 125g cream (1)
- 35g coffee beans
- 1 stick (1.8g) instant coffee
- 70g milk chocolate
- pinch of salt
- 125g cream (2)
heat up cream (1) with the coffee beans and bring to a boil. allow it to infuse for at least thirty minutes but you can let it steep for up to two hours.
soak the gelatine in cold water. melt the chocolate with the instant coffee and the salt over warm water. reheat the cream/coffee mixture and let the gelatine dissolve in it. sieve out the coffee beans and add the warm cream to the chocolate. use a hand blender to make sure everything emulsifies. let it cool down a bit (till it's handwarm).
whip up cream (2) and carefully fold it under the chocolate mixture.
option 1: you fill it into a silicone mould (mine had 100ml per cavity). fill the individual cavity up to two third, add the frozen lemon confit insert, press down lightly and add as much mousse as needed. you can leave it like this or add a biscuit base of your choice. freeze over night and unmould it the next day, carefully let it unfreeze in the fridge.
option 2: you serve it as a glass dessert. pick a glass of your choice and fill in the mousse. let it rest in the fridge over night. add as much lemon confit as you want when you serve it.
(note: this cream is relatively bitter and very focused on the coffee flavour. you can leave out the instant coffee and reduce the amount of coffee beans if that's more your taste)
coffee icecream with hazelnuts
(note: i used an icecream machine to make this)
- 600g cream
- 50g coffee beans
- 150g sugar
- pinch of salt (1)
- cinnamon to taste
- 100g chopped hazelnuts
- 25g maple sirup
- pinch of salt (2)
for the hazelnuts, preheat the oven to 160° (fan oven). combine the hazelnuts with the maple sirup and the salt, put it on a baking sheet and bake it for twenty-twentyfive minutes. let it cool.
put 500g of cream in a pot, add the sugar, coffee beans and pinch of salt (1) and bring to boil. let it cool down and let the coffee beans infuse in the fridge over night.
the next day, sieve out the coffee, add the remaining 100g of cream and cinnamon to taste (i added less than a teaspoon but this is individual preference). fill it into an icecream machine and let it cool according to the instructions of the machine. in the last ten minutes, add the hazelnuts. fill the finished ice cream into a container and put it in the freezer till serving.
assemble the mousse and the icecream on a plate of your choice, serve and enjoy :)

The lights were dimmed, so it would ensure an easy adjustment on one’s eyes after walking in the blinding sun's beams.

Then after the high pitched 'ding' emitting from the machine, interrupting him from his thoughts. His hands were quick to work effortlessly, gently pouring the black liquid into two cups, and adding a splash of milk to only one of it.
“Thank you for walking me home,” You grabbed his hand and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth, brushing your thumb over his cheek, “I had a really good time tonight, Shawn.”
Shawn’s eyes could only widen by your sudden act, and cheeks reddening even further.
“Me too,” he said, nodding, and unable to contain his giddy smile, “Would you maybe..” tilting his head, eyeing you with curiosity. “Go on another date with me?” He asked.
“I’ll, uhm”-,” you said, trying to ignore that your face probably also brightens with color as well.
You both stayed silent for several moments, slight awkwardness filling the space between you.
“Oh goodness was I too blunt? I didn’t make you uncomfortable, did I? I just assume, I– “
You interrupted him with another soft, chaste kiss on his cheek. Just a second, just enough to smell the mint on his breath. You pulled away and smiled at him, lacing your fingers with his. “I’d love to.”
Absolutely perfect, he thought, leaning in for a sip. There really was just something satisfying about this that brought him so much warmth and happiness at just one sip.
It was a rather slow day for Shawn. He was just in bed, reading one of his favourite Harry Potter books, attached to his lap, was you who stubbornly decided that today was a clingy and cuddly day.
He loved slow days like this one, since it meant he could spend time with you without having to worry about writing new lyrics or attending interviews anytime soon. He wiggled slightly to get into a more comfortable position, effectively stirring you from your short nap.
Soon enough, the book he was reading disappears from his grasp, held in your arm before being transferred over the nightstand next to the bed, and Shawn is pulled down a little further into the bed.
“Cuddle now, read later,” You commanded, trapping him to the bed with your entire body weight and legs.
“If you say so, baby.” Shawn sighed, happily settling into your embrace.
His lips quivered into a smile as he brought the warm cup to his nose again, inhaling the pleasant tanginess of the coffee before bringing the cup back up to his lips, humming delightfully at its strong odor, continued wrapping his fingers around the heated mug and relaxed his shoulders at the pleasant bitterness coming from the warm beverage.
"I have to tell you something," Shawn mutters as your face is still mashed against his chest.
"What is it?" You ask, barely above a whisper, his hand still stroking slowly over your back.
"You're gorgeous," he says quietly, muffled a little as he speaks, "I love your smile, your dimples, your face, I love your scars and your arms and your cute butt and your legs and basically your everything."
You smile, looking up at him. "You think I have a cute butt?"
"Don't push it," Shawn yawns. "But I do love all of you. Now go to sleep."
”I think you have a cute butt too.” You giggled as you continued nuzzling your head on his chest, and pressing a light kiss on the spot just above where you could hear the rapid thud-thud sound, “I love every part of you too, Shawn.”
The feeling of joy continues engulfing his body, like the warmest hug, transporting him out of this world.
Shawn woke up lying on his back with a weight on his chest. One arm was slung around his shoulders as you used his chest as a pillow and tangled your legs with his.
“Y/N,” Shawn spoke softly, rubbing a hand up and down the arm he had wrapped around your waist. The only answer he received was a low grunt. “Babyyy,” he tried again, a little louder this time. “It's already morning.”
“So?” You asked, voice rough as you otherwise remained unmoving.
“Maybe we should get up?”
“No thank you,” Shaking your head, you tighten your arm around his middle and legs, locking him in place. Shawn wasn’t going anywhere without a struggle. “Come on,” He wheedled as he poked at your shoulder and ran a finger down to trace little patterns across your back. “Don’t you want breakfast?”
“Nope,” You said again, trying to get him to settle back down into his previous position. “And please stop wiggling, you’re a terrible pillow.”
“Just use one of your actual pillows!”
“It’s not as comfortable,” You smiled, before lifting your head to kiss the top of his head, “So please for now,” You grumbled, taking one of his hands that you could reach and locking your fingers together, “We should just stay here.”
“Okay fine,” Shawn sighed, giving in, lightly squeezing your hand. “Okay you were right, this is relaxing, peaceful and cozy. And I like that we are together. I like this. Just laying here with you even if we are so hungover right now.”
“Told you this could be nice.” You laughed
Shawn smiled hearing your response, and proceeded to settle back into a more comfortable position and pulled you even closer.
So much so that he didn’t feel that moment of tranquility was interrupted by a pair of arms enveloping him into an embrace. A smile forming on his lips to a familiar slight sigh that escaped his accompaniment.
“Shouldn't you be asleep? It's late.” Shawn said, barely looking up from the screens hoping for some type of progress, or any progress had been made. He rubbed his temples and sighed in mild frustration.
“I could ask you the same thing you know...but that's why I got you this..”
Shawn looked up to see what you had brought. It was a steaming mug of what smelled to be coffee. You handed the cup to him, ushering a brief warning of how hot it was. “It's nowhere as good as your coffee, but I tried…”
“Thank you, baby.” Shawn smiled, taking a sip and went back to work, feeling slightly more awake.
“Don’t overwork yourself too much, okay?” You said, leaving a light kiss on his forehead before moving across the room.
“Hey now, what are you doing?” Shawn asked when he heard the slight creak of a couch, “You should be sleeping.”
“I'm staying here with you.”
“You have two early meetings tomorrow, don’t stay up with me.”
“I took a day off. Don't worry, I promise not to disturb you. I'm just here if you want a refill on coffee.” You said picking up one of the books lying around.
It was your favorite sight in the morning. Shawn had gotten up before you and was in the kitchen, making some coffee.
You lean against the doorframe of the kitchen, head slightly tilted as watching him, your eyes travelling down his body. A smile spread across your lips as you stood there and stared at him for a second longer before slowly walking towards him.
There he was, his back to you, wearing only his black boxers. Your eyes danced across his broad shoulders, to the tight muscles of his back and down to his butt, god he was a vision like this.
"Thank you for the food." You said, sitting down at the table and started eating the piece of the chicken, “Didn’t expect to have a home cooked meal made by my lovely boyfriend after a long day at work.”
"Is... Is the chicken... alright?"
He actually knew it wasn't, and you probably knew too.
"It’s alright," You muttered, but clearly trying to shove down a glass of water right after taking a bite.
Shawn reached his own fork towards the dish. "You don’t have to finish it."
As if in defiance, You took another piece of the burnt chicken. "It’s okay," you said, choosing not to look at him, "It's... actually not bad, for a first try."
Shawn couldn't help it, he chuckled, “You must really love me.”
“That I do.” You smirked, “Because I truly never thought a chicken could possibly die twice.”
"Oh dear god." Shawn said, embarrassingly hid his red face behind a hand, but couldn't quite smother the smile on his lips. ”We are so ordering that pizza."
"Morning sleepy-head," he said, his voice cheerful but low.
"Morning," you responded, planting a kiss on the back of his head.
He loosened your hold on his waist and spun around, pulling you into an embrace and clutching you by your waist and lifting you effortlessly onto the counter as he stepped between your legs. His hands gently caressing your thighs, lips curved up into a smile.
“Hey, Y/N?” He says, voice quiet as both of you stand on the front porch of his childhood house, to watch the snowfall for a bit.
You glanced up at him with a questioning look,“Yeah?”
Without another word, he grabs your scarf and pulls you in for a sweet kiss. You were a little stunned, but eventually melting into the kiss anyway.
“What did you do that for?,” you whisper when you break the kiss, “Not that I didn’t love that.”
“Oh you know I just love kissing you,” he laughed, before pulling you back in for another kiss, “And maybe being close to you too.”
He held you like that for a moment, both of you savouring the contact, listening to each other breathe.
The warmth of the shower water flowed over your body and you hummed happily at the sensation. Your eyes closed as you allowed this moment to just relax before the beginning of your always hectic day.
Your hands were caught in his hair, combing the suds from it. Shawn was pressed up against your body, his body slick with water from the shower, his lips nudging at your neck, “Oh my god!” You pull away slightly, rubbing some water from your eyes with your hand, and glanced up at him, “I don’t have clothes for work.”
“Just wore what you wore yesterday,” His chuckles, lips choosing to stay from your mouth, before making its way down your neck, licking, biting and sucking the skin.
“I can’t,” You gasped for breath, chest rising and falling rapidly as his hands slid up your body, “I have to go,” You said, while you unwrapped your arms around his neck, trying to move away but Shawn was instead pulling you closer, restricting your movements.
“No, no, please don’t go yet,” Shawn pleaded, nibbling at your sweet spot. “Two more minutes maybe?” He tried to convince you, pressing into your skin before a calloused hand reached around and grabbed your butt while another grabbed your thigh and pulled you up, “Or you know maybe it’s time for you to move in?”
You pulled him away from your body, forcing him to look into your eyes. He was grinning widely, and had this slight blush covering his cheeks. “Are you…. serious?,” You asked, while placing a finger on his lips to stop him from distracting you with his kisses, “Ummm, that.. is a huge next step..”
“Yes I’m sure!” Shawn nodded before carefully setting you back on the ground. He reached out his hand, cradling your face in it, rubbing small, tender circles on your cheek, “So, what do you say?”
“I don’t know..” you purse your lips and put a finger to your chin as if you were contemplating and then you shake your head with a grin splitting your face, “I have mixed feelings about your sleep talking or you can be a messy person sometimes.”
“Please,” he responded, wrapping his arms around your middle and holding you tight, peppering kisses on whatever skin he could, “Please.” Kiss. “Please” kiss. “Please.”
“Hmm..” You smiled as you wrapped your arms around his neck, and captured his mouth with your own again, “Okay, I’ll move in with you.”
"I made coffee," he said, pulling away to look at your face and giving you the cup.
“Thank you,” you said, taking a sip of the coffee before signing deeply, surely enjoying the heavenly taste that slowly woke you up, “Uhmm it tastes a little bitter,” you said, arm wrapped around his shoulder, nose brushing against his. Your hand cupping his cheek, lips lingering on his soft skin, “I think I need a little sweetener.”
“Bitter huh?” He mumbled against your cheek before looking down at the cup of coffee in your hand, “Let me make it taste sweeter for you.” He smiles, carefully taking the cup out of your hand.
You were expecting him to add some sugar and taste to make it less bitter. Instead, he placed it on the counter, turning to face with your soft warm hand, noses brushing, and lips sharing the coffee filled air.
His lips parted, moving closer to your lips. His tongue peeked out of his mouth brushing along his bottom lip before disappearing and connected with yours, molding effortlessly.
His bottom lip tucked between yours as your heads titled in opposite directions, moving in the familiar rhythm. Your tongue pressed oh his, tasting the bitterness of the coffee. He then planted your lips on his once more before pulling away. Hand still resting on his cheek, slowly caressing.
“Shawn, what are you doing?” You call up from the bed, from where you had been watching some Netflix, “You are missing out on the movie.”
“Have you seen my blue hoodie?”
You immediately wince, not knowing that this was what all the fuss was about. You scrub a hand down your face and bite at your lip, feeling bad for having stolen the soft pullover, but it fit you so comfortably, the one that was so cozy and warm and it was just filled with your favourite cologne of his.
He’s waiting for an answer, you know, and your face crinkles up apologetically, “…No.”
“You’re wearing it, aren’t you?” He walks out of the closet, as you chew your lip.
“It’s literally snowing outside and your clothes are so soft, it also smells like you and – ” You start to explain yourself, but he only huffs out a little laugh, a small chuckle, “You’re so lucky I love you.” He says.
“There it should taste sweeter now,” he whispered, brushing his thumb on your cheek.
“Uhmm.” Your eyes were still closed, lips curved up into a smile and continued learning into his touch.
God, he could get used to this. Sharing a home, coming home to you, sleeping beside you, staying up all night with you and waking up beside you.
He wanted nothing more than It to be a forever kind of thing.
