hey you ever heard the version of carmelita by flaco jimenez and dwight yoakam?

I have, yes, and I like the accordion -- but I must say I deeply loathe versions that change "I pawned my Smith-Corona" to Smith-Wesson, for both lyrical and personal reasons.

Like, there's already a fucking Elegant and Dreadful gun reference in the song ("playing solitaire with my pearl-handled deck") that dangles you over a numb desperation.

In contrast, the implied vulnerability of pawning a gun just fizzles next to that - and everything else that change adds is a plot complication of how many guns this guy has at any time which is thbbbbbbt

Pawning your typewriter, otoh, is losing your identity, maybe your livelihood or your art, definitely your Voice, like a trapped animal gnawing off their own limb.

Losing yourself in pieces, being ejected from the community, holding each other (or maybe even just the idea of love) as a lifeline as the dark overwhelms.
