109-Pound Halibut Caught Through Ice During Special Canada Fishing Project

What’s The Biggest Fish You’ve Ever Caught?

I can almost guarantee you it’s not as large as this 109-pound halibut that was caught during an ice fishing endeavor in Quebec, Canada. The massive fish took four hours to reel in, and because it had to be pulled through the top of the frozen Saguenay Fjord, the ice fisherman had to resize the opening just to get the ice through.

The Canada anglers had special permission to fish the area thanks to the Atlantic Halibut Winter Fishing Project for Scientific Purposes, which requires fishermen to turn over whatever they catch to scientists in the area so biological date can be recorded.

Doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me, especially if you get to haul in behemoths like Remi and Mathieu Aubin did when they landed this halibut. The fish was so large, the two men had to basically ask for backup, requiring two additional sets of hands to assist in reshaping the hole in the ice to reel the halibut out of the water.

The Atlantic Halibut Winter Fishing Project (for Scientific Purposes, can’t leave that part out) is such a rare experience because otherwise, fishing for Atlantic halibut is not allowed. The species is on the endangered list, and can only be fished for through the Canadian fishing project.

That’s why Mathieu Aubin was so excited about the rare experience, and posted about it on his Facebook page just 24 hours removed from the catch:

“What to say after 24 hours… Honestly I’m still speechless, I went back to spend the day on the ice today to thank the fjord and live my emotion of the moment in peace! No matter how I look at this event, I can only be positive about what life brings me.”

So What Happened To The 100-Plus-Pound Halibut After It Was Caught?

Well, scientists will take a look at the fish and conduct research to create data about the Atlantic halibut. And as for the meat of the fish, Aubin stated in the post that he would be donating it to those that are in need.

The Atlantic Halibut fishing project started back in 2022, and has repeated every year since during the winter.

So I was just rewatching the end of episode 5 once or twice (no particular reason), and realised Ed specifies really clearly when he says about fishing being man vs beast: 'I'm the man and the beast is beneath the sea' and that sentence is so meaningful coming from a man who for all his adult life has thought of himself as a kraken or a monster who deserved to drown.

He is healing through fishing 🎣 And the crew are healing through shared creative projects like the unicorn leg and the bizarre cursed suit raid.

some 'brief' musings before the last episode…🎣

so this was within the first two minutes of episode 1

and i cant stop thinking about how heartbreakingly beautiful it would be if during the last few minutes of that last episode we get a direct parallel to this specific scene, but this time, it’s hiro realising his life is just getting started, on a cold december day. (provided that his disease gets treated etc..)

(from last week’s episode (so the 12/12/24), can we talk abt how neat it is they paid so much attention to this project to the point they even synchronised the ep’s events with its release date—)

a perfect contrast to his depressing introduction that would make such a hopeful and satisfying conclusion to his character (and the series as a whole)

like takaaki had so kindly suggested a few months before but hiro wasn’t having it back then, unfortunately, still stuck in his pessimistic mindset

but our boy has grown so much since (and i truly couldn’t be more proud of him for that)

so what if negaposi angler was never about hiro ending up not dying or accidentally having been misdiagnosed (basically the 2 years left to live being total bs, which is a theory i personally am not very fond of..), but instead finding something that could change his outlook on life for the better and making it worth living (fishing, in that instance)

in a few simple words: from negative to positive

of course i’d be utterly inconsolable if he does not make it in the end, but that would make the series even more special in my eyes (and frankly speaking it wouldn’t be the 1st time a show where the mc dies shortly after finding sth making his life worthwhile scars me for life—). the more painful, the better :’)

again this is me rambling based on self indulgent lines of thought while being fuelled by the absurd attachment i have to this series and i just had to yap about it somewhere sry OTL,,

World Dugong Day

Every year, on the 28th of May, it is celebrated the World Dugong Day! 🧜

Dugong is known as the sea cow (pic attached 🐮 - x). Why sea cow, you ask? These animals can be found in coastal environments feeding exclusively and extensively on seagrasses. The largest remaining population of Dugongs can be found in Australia (i), while the closest to the United Kingdom can be observed in the shallow waters of The Arabian Gulf (ii) 🌊

Why are dugongs important? 🧐

According to the Dugong & Seagrass Conservation Project (iii), dugongs contribute to maintaining balanced marine coastal environments, while also representing good indicators for local ecosystem health. Their presence is of course linked with seagrasses, which not only represents these herbivore mammals’ only source of food: seagrass sits at bottom of food chain in coastal environments (iv). Moreover, it provides important ecosystem services such as fish products, reduced erosion and flood protection (v). In other words, dugong presence is the manifestation of healthy ecosystem. Terrible news is: they are classified as vulnerable species (vi) 😰

Why are they declining? And how is climate change impacting their population? 😭

Dugongs are sensitive creatures not exempt from anthropogenic (modern age) disturbance. They have been largely hunted by humans for its meat, fat and oils, which caused significant population reduction (vi). Also, seagrass species are under extreme pressure due water quality variations largely driven by climate change (vii) and further human activity (viii). In addition, their slow reproduction rate and long life span (around 70 years) make them less resilient from not-environmentally friendly fishing practices (ix) 🎣

What can be done to support them? 💪

The Australian Great Barrier Reef and Marine Park Authority (i) provides the following recommendations:

1. Protect coastal habitats - Do not damage seagrass by dragging boats on underwater meadows and act against pollution, eutrophication and herbicide use deriving from land-based activities 🚜

2. Avoid use of mesh nets - Dugongs can get trapped in fishing nets 🥅

3. Boat responsibly - Dugongs are hard too spot while sitting on high speeding boats. Reduce speed while crossing shallow waters and seagrass meadows. If you spot one, it is likely it will not the only one in the area 🚢

4. Report - Just like for other sirenians, as well as cetaceans, it is essential to report injured/dead dugongs to local authorities ☎️

5. Donate - Dugong & Seagrass Conservation Project covers the conservation of dugongs and their associated seagrass ecosystems in eight countries in the Indo-Pacific region: Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mozambique, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. 🧶🎣 Meet My Koi: 😁

This project took me just over a month to complete with some hook attention almost daily. (Confession: I did make a couple 'quick gratification' projects along the way.)

The pattern I used is 'Whomsoever's Koi' by Terry Finer. From the get-go I ventured from the instructions by selecting worsted weight (Red Heart Super Saver in Dusty Grey) over sport weight making this catch 34" compared to the pattern projection of 24". I also ventured from the instructions using a crochet scale technique from Rachy Newin's pattern 'Mother of Dragons Dice Bag' (free Ravelry download and highly recommended!). I might've managed a better job with the koi scales, but - like the Alabama song goes - it was close enough to perfect for me. 😁 Anywho, the Newin technique creates a more solid fabric than the typical crochet scale fabric worked over v-stitches.

An old tee shirt was upcycled to quick sew a lining for the scale body. And OMG, I can still hear my grandmother's (RIP) seamstress soul scolding me on that bit of sloppy work. 😅

I crocheted the eyes, and variegated embroidery floss created the illusion of reflected light: big accidental score on that actually. I am very happy with this outcome! 

Lastly, my fish head came out flattish for the liking, so I stitched a fold on either side of the head and declared it part of the gill.

In summary, I am very pleased with the money invested in the Finer koi pattern. While I'm not a great pattern follower, I learned some really neat techniques through the work. Bravo, Terry Finer. 👏

Group projects were the WORST! You hated them with the passion of a thousand suns! To make matters worse, you ended up being paired with a known slacker, Theon Greyjoy. He thought he didn't have to work as hard as anyone else simply because of who his adoptive father was. He liked to bully people into doing the work for him.

Well, that wasn't going to fly with you. That guy was going to work if it killed him. Just as you'd made up your mind, Theon himself dropped into the seat next to you. "Alright, sweetheart, let's pick a topic and you can tell me what to put my name on."

You arched a brow. "Yeah, no. The only work you're putting your name on is the work you actually do." Theon stared at you for a second. It was like he wasn't used to other students telling him no. His lips drooped into a scowl. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me, Greyjoy. I get that you're used to being in charge, but here's the thing...I'm not scared of you. So, here is how it's going to work. You're going to sit there, help me pick a topic, and then we'll divide the work. You will get credit only for the work you do. Do you work, and I'll help make sure we get a good grade. Got it?"

For a moment, Theon looked like he didn't know what to do. Then, ever so slowly, he nodded. "Y-Yeah. Sure." You beamed and thanked him. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

So Worlds Remembered is a sequel to Minds Remembered, and it stars a wider cast of characters, but it's also firmly rooted in worldbuilding.

It starts with a technologically very advanced, self-sustaining underground colony, that runs on a surveillance state. A bunch of people -- low-level workers, an ex-soldier who lost his license and was imprisoned for a while, a member of the secret police, an ex-member of the secret police, a mad scientist, his tired assistant, three cyborgs and more -- found out the propaganda that the surface is entirely unlivable was false, and go to the surface to explore.

I'm not entirely sure what they find on the surface. I am thinking of a society that is really advanced in a biological sense, so they will probably have living equipment, gene-modified and mutated population, engineered livestock and whatnot, but not much in the computing way of things. This is to contrast the computer-centric world of the underground refuge, who look more or less like today's humans (the only difference would stem from being underground for a long time, which means... probably more pale and less well equipped for bright places), who however have mastered prosthetics and augmentations. You can and will see people with circuitry on and around their body, exoskeletons that provide endurance, and even brain-computer interfaces.

So, everyone is baffled by the others' looks, and also probably the culture, too. (The Underground has a monolithic government with small rebel cells, the Surface has warring factions.)

But, through misunderstandings and adjusting to new environments, these very different people form alliances and friendships, gain understanding of each other, and provide help when needed.

Language acquisition:🇪🇸

When I thought about this particular aspect, I knew it would be a perfect opportunity to continue my Spanish journey. Levelling up to a fluent level is my main objective, while making the process of language acquisition as enjoyable as possible. Currently, my level is A2, after an exam in summer, so at last I would like to write a B2 exam, which is said represent an articulate and communicative level.

Main goal: B2 exam.

Musical instrument:🎸

However, whenever my brain hurts from thinking in Spanish, playing the guitar would take the spotlight. Having played a bit in the past, I really regretted leaving playing an instrument. Maybe it is encoded in my genes, as my grandpa got kicked out of musical school, but I deeply believe I could be the first in the family to be in harmony with music.

Main goal: 5 pieces, by heart.

Acting:🎭🎬

If not sport, I am planning to spend my time on the filmset. Here often creativity and activity overlap, as sports abilities are often the key component on top of acting itself. This endlessly creative world offers many components like photoshoots, campaigns and film, which I want to be a part of.

Main goal: 4 projects during the next year.

ACTIVITY-🎯-

Here I seek for diversity, following my old routines of staying active. Ones are going to be intense in terms of what my body is capable of and other will focuse more on critical thinking and finding the peace of mind. These will include fishing, skateboarding practice daily, gymnastics, running, MTB, parkour and what I relatively found incredibly amusing, playing pool. What I would love to introduce would be certainly gym, as I have never been enthusiastic about heavy weights. Before, I focused much more on callisthenics and mobility training. Having such a variety will certainly never get dull.

Main goals:

🏋🏽-100kg, chest press.

🏃‍♂️-5km, 21 minutes.

🤸🏽parkour, flips, strength.

🚲-kazoora bike park.

🛹-new tricks: treflip.

🎣-peace of mind.

🎱-mastering the techniques.

SERVICE-⛑

Ronalds McDonalds foundation:🏥

The most exciting, full filing and essentially the heart of CAS is going to the Ronald McDonalds foundation. I have been its member for the past year and I have never been so thrilled to work with children, help around the hospital and spend time with good-hearted people. The sense of community and bonds the bonds that have been made is what I am most grateful for. Here I am planning to spend the most time, given how diverse the tasks can be. They vary from entertaining children to screwing together hundreds of beds, to meeting with the representatives of the foundation. Life in the foundation never gets dull.

Recently, other foundations visited our school. I was the most impressed by Level up and I am sure I would like to be a part of their projects, without forgetting that my heart will be in Roland’s:)

Main goal: +-30h of volunteering

Trash picking:🗑🌲

For the short term Service, I thought about a close nature reserve just a few streets from where I live. Even though it is a close terrain, people keep littering it. Every now and then, I will leave the park, with a few kilos of trash and put it where it belongs:)

Main goal: 2 full bags of trash each visit.
