EPISODE NOTES
Today we're diving into the mental side of the sport, focusing on a common yet often overlooked struggle: impostor syndrome.
We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Lisa Orbe-Austin, a licensed psychologist and renowned executive coach, who's made tremendous strides in tackling impostor syndrome, diversity, equity and inclusion, and effective communication within various organizations and educational institutions.
The author of two insightful books, 'Own Your Greatness' and 'Your Unstoppable Greatness,' sheâs an expert in overcoming impostor syndrome and navigating toxic or unsupportive work cultures.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Orbe-Austin also brings a unique perspective to our discussion today - she's a parent to two budding fencers. Let's delve into her rich professional insights and her firsthand experiences from the fencing world.Â
Visit Dr. Orbe-Austin's siteÂ

"In each episode, weâll talk to someone interesting within the fencing world, including young fencers just learning the sport, coaches, experts from outside of fencing, fencing parents, referees, Olympians and Paralympians, and many more. Ready? Set? Fence!"
So while this podcast is obviously geared directly towards olympic fencers the fact is that there's plenty of folks in historical fencing that deal with imposter syndrome, parenting and similar related issues and that pretty much every fencer out there can keep working on their mental game.

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.
Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.
and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."
#chickens#like buddy you are never going to actually make a profit#and if by some miracle you do#it's going to be VERY SMALL#Considering the money you put into building or buying a coop#plus feed and bedding and equipment (waterers feeders perches etc) costs#egg cartons and enrichment and gas to go get the feed#the cost you (personally) probably put into building the egg stand you mentioned#a 50lbs bag of feed will feed 12 adult chickens for 8 days#12 chickens generally lay 6-12 eggs per day#usually less in the fall and may even stop in winter#a 50lb bag of feed is usually $12-15#and you wasted the first 6 months going eggless until they were old enough to lay#and that doesn't factor in oyster shell or anything else you may need to do for them#like worming or treating for coccidia or anything#and doesn't take into account your time#like asjh;dsfkgdh you really thought you were gonna make a buck doing this???#wank for ts

Bruce owes Danny money. He does Not want to pay up.
So! Danny had to run away from Amity Park when his parents discovered his Powers. But every time he tried to stay in a single place in America, they somehow managed to find him.
Turns out, they were working with the GIW to track him using the GIW's resources and the Fenton's Genius to find him everywhere he ran to. Eventually, Danny figured he had had enough and ran to Europe where the GIW had no Jurisdiction.
After wandering for a while, Danny was found and recruited by the League of Assasins. He was powerful, skilled, and connected to the Lazarus Pits, so they approached him with a job offer.
They would hide him from the Fentons, who had began to search for him in Europe independently, and in return he would work for them as an Assasin.
Considering his situation, Danny agreed.
He began training to be an Assasin, supplementing his Ghost Abilities with the abilities of an Assasin to become even more Stealthy.
While training under the League, Danny met another recruit simply known as Bruce. They trained together for years, even going on a few missions together gathering intel, and using disguises to hid in plain sight.
On one of these missions, Danny lent Bruce some money with the promise to get paid back when they returned to the League. That same night, Bruce left the League of Assasins and never came back.
...
Bruce was sitting in the Batcave going over a case with Tim, Jason was off to the side cleaning his Guns, and Dick and Cass were holding an acrobatics competition in their Obstacle Course, with Damien, Steph, and Duke cheering them on.
Suddenly an Eldritch Emerald Light sprang to life in the center of the Batcave, and everybody dropped what they were doing and sprang to action.
Slowly, a glowing green figure emerged from the Light. He appeared Eldritch in Nature, as if he existed in multiple layers of reality at once and looking at him gave them minor headaches. Then, the figure spoke up.
"BRUCE. ITS BEEN 15 YEARS. YOU STILL OWE ME 16 DOLLARS."
Recognizing Danny, Bruce took a moment to compose himself before responding.
"Fuck Off."

you're in the habit of denying yourself things.
if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.
but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?
what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.
and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.
you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.
so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.
it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.
sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.
oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.
#warm up#this isn't good#writeblr#this is complicated by the fact i can't stand up too long or i fuckken pass out and <3 hit my damn head <3#but i did take a deep breath and buy myself the stupid rice cooker#and!!! a very cheap sushi kit!!! i have been wanting to try making sushi for literally YEARS#the kit was only like 15 dollars!!!! and i haven't purchased it bc?!!??!?!?!?!!?#..... i didn't get the mixer tho that felt. like a lot. like too much.#on my list is a kitchenaid. one day when i get a check and i have paid off my student debt#and medical debt#i will put that first little bit of cash#into a kitchenaid 5qt stand mixer (with attachments)#i really do just go into their refurbished section and stare lustily at each option#but yeah i feel guilty about the rice cooker even tho i know for a fact this damn thing is gonna be a lifesaver#oh shit also fuck i forgot to mention . poached eggs

Now pay interest - 10% per year
Masterpost
As the Bat-family processed what had just happened, Jason was already plotting.
âSo,â Jason began, a wicked grin spreading across his face, âdoes this mean we have a ghost King in the family now? Because Iâve got so many questions.â
âFocus, Todd,â Damian snapped, though his own curiosity was evident in his furrowed brow. âThat... entity was clearly powerful. Father, why did you not inform us of this connection sooner?â
Bruce didnât even glance up from his computer. âIt was irrelevant.â
âIrrelevant?â Dick exclaimed, gesturing wildly. âA glowing ghost guy just popped out of a portal in our cave to collect a debt, and you think itâs irrelevant?â
Tim, typing furiously, pulled up the mission logs from Bruceâs early years. âOkay, I think I found the mission in Prague where this all went down. It says here... wait. Danny wasnât just some guy you ran into. You trained with him in the League of Assassins?â
Steph leaned over Timâs shoulder to read. âWait, what?! Heâs an assassin ghost King?â
Jason let out a low whistle. âThis just gets better and better.â
Duke raised his hand, hesitant. âUh, just a thought⊠if heâs the Ghost King, doesnât that mean he has control over, like, all ghosts? Including... uh, Lazarus Pits?â
Everyone froze. Slowly, they all turned to Bruce, whose expression darkened slightly.
âYes,â Bruce admitted reluctantly.
âHoly crap,â Jason said, leaning back with a stunned look. âHeâs the reason the Pits freaked me out after I came back, isnât he? I thought it was just the resurrection thing, but you knew he was tied to them!â
Bruceâs silence was answer enough.
âI want to meet him,â Cass signed firmly.
âSeconded,â Duke added. âHe seems cool.â
âNo,â Bruce said, finally standing and cutting through the rising chatter. His tone was firm, brooking no argument. âDanny is not someone you want to get involved with.â
But before Bruce could elaborate, the room was bathed in green light again.
Danny reappeared, now sitting cross-legged in mid-air, holding what looked like a spectral clipboard. âForgot one thing,â he announced casually.
Bruceâs glare could have burned through steel. âWhat now?â
Danny smirked. âI want interest. Fifteen years is a long time to wait for sixteen bucks. So letâs say... ten percent per year?â
Jason cackled as the rest of the family broke out into laughter. Even Damian couldnât entirely suppress a smirk.
Bruce pinched the bridge of his nose again. âIâm not paying you interest.â
Danny shrugged, grinning. âGuess Iâll have to stick around until you do. Hope youâve got extra space, because Iâm moving in.â
The Batcave erupted into chaos. Jason and Steph cheered, Tim frantically calculated how much Bruce technically owed, and Bruceâs patience reached its breaking point.
âFine,â Bruce growled. âBut youâre staying in the guest room.â
Danny floated down, looking entirely too smug. âDeal. Now, whoâs up for pizza? Iâm starving.â

i feel like people don't talk about the impactfulness of swansea immediately ditching his sobriety when he found out that the mouthwash had an alcohol content.
from the very beginning, he was accepting the idea of not getting out of the situation alive.
it takes a strong man to commit to sobriety, especially after 13 years of (presumably) heavy alcoholism, and an even stronger one to remain sober for 15 years, though he hadn't done it for his own enjoyment- that thought of him dead in some ditch somewhere because of some accident or another made while he was drunk out of his mind scared him into it, and pushed him to his decision. he enjoyed his time while drunk, but he knew that he wouldn't make it anywhere in his life and he knew that his time was running out (in many ways: he was getting older, so he would have less of his life left to steer himself in the right direction, and also the amount of alcohol he was drinking could kill him any day at that point, especially as he got older), so he put in the effort to try and 'better' himself- clean himself up, get everything he thinks 'successful' and 'happy' people have, and get sober.
of course, this doesn't make him a happier person, as much as he felt like it should. that was the entire point of his speech before his death- everything he worked for was a lot less exciting when he finally achieved it. but he stayed sober, because he knew that, in a more objective sense, outside of any of his own personal feelings about himself and his life and what he actually enjoyed, he was better off that way. he had more opportunities in life, he could keep a job, and he could maintain his relationships with his wife and kids much better than he could if he was still an alcoholic.
but when the ship crashed, he accepted that it was likely his final resting place, probably from the very beginning. he'd already had his shot at life, he already tried his best to be a model 'functioning member of society', and it was every bit as unfulfilling as it possibly could be. and now he was reaching his mid-life, or even late life. there wasn't much time left for him to be able to try and work toward an invisible goal of 'true happiness', whatever the hell that means. the way he saw it, he'd already lived his whole life. nothing more for him to do.
so when he found out that there was alcohol in the mouthwash, he barely hesitated a second. he drank it because THOSE were the best days of his life. he no longer worried about what kinds of consequences that such a relapse could cause, because at that point it didn't matter. he didn't care about continuing to live his 'model' life because that ship was his grave. he didn't have to worry about how it'd affect the relationship he had with his family, he didn't have to worry about being unable to get a job because he couldn't go half a day without drinking, he didn't have to worry about turning up dead in a ditch because of some mistake caused by his inebriation- it didn't matter in the end. the six months of food supply would run out far before the alcohol could kill him.
he did not for a second consider the possibility of him escaping the ship, even though he was the only person (for the majority of the game) that knew about the working cryo pod. it was never for him- he saw it as being a waste if he got in himself.
he'd already run his course. he would rather save it for someone with more potential to get somewhere in life, someone like daisuke or anya.
#bluejay.txt#when he dropped the line about breaking his 15 years of sobriety#that was the first time i felt dread in the game. felt like a turning point#mouthwashing spoilers#mouthwashing#mouthwashing game#mouthwashing swansea#mouthwashing anya#mouthwashing daisuke#tw alcohol#tw alcoholism

the strength it must have taken for illario to not immediately go full 'lmao since when have you even had a kiss hello lucanis' sibling violence mode during the café talk. inspirational. rook and lucanis really were doing all that right in front of his salad huh
#lucanis is being SO cringe with that line right out there in public and I would die for him. it's just such a weird thing to say#tbf if anyone in the world is used to the insane things lucanis says and would go 'yes yes lucanis waxing poetic about coffee#in ways normal people reserve for trying to get in someone's pants (the roast won't fuck you lucanis)#we've all heard it' like it's all normal I suppose it would be illario. and also he's too busy with the 'shit fuck shit he's not dead#he's not dead of the family members 'supposed' to be dead we're at two definite failures out of two and woe me if the twain should meet#if that IS a demon in there it sure talks exactly in the same bizarre way only my cousin does#does that mean anything what the fuck do I do who do I kill about this' internal monologue I guess#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#illario dellamorte#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#I mean he does very much say that to a non-romancing rook too which only makes it all the more delightfully odd#is it a very lucaniscore way of testing the waters. is it just how he always talks about coffee. many plausible approaches here#no one forced him to bring up kisses and 'you should try it' out of the blue like that is all I'm saying. he could have acted normal#(theoretically)#i feel there are reasons to read some stuff into it lol#lucanis when rye says he prefers tea: it's so over cautious overture I don't quite understand myself yet gently rebuffed#lucanis when rye takes him up on the 'so what should a first kiss be' theme: oh we're so back!!!! wait. what. what do I do now#what is this#it's kind of really sweet that rook answers with their own playfully florid beverage based barely hidden metaphor at the end too#matching freaks and having fun with it#as far as lucanis is concerned rye's only true flaws are 1) prefers tea to coffee (oh well. no one can be perfect. cross-cultural love#can conquer all even in this) and 2) weird taste in interior design (did we really HAVE to bring your 15 foot tall corpse statues#with us home rook. I can understand a tasteful skull here and there but this seems excessive. well if it makes you happy I guess)

"Damien Lehfeldt on How Team USA Is Using Analytics to Get an Edge"
"
EPISODE SUMMARY
Our guest is Damien Lehfeldt, known on Instagram and elsewhere as "The Fencing Coach" but also the strategy and data lead for the Team USA national epee team. We chatted with him about the analytics behind Team USA's drive for gold.
EPISODE NOTES
In this episode of First to 15, we're joined by "The Fencing Coach" himself, Damien Lehfeldt.Â
Damien has been writing The Fencing Coach blog since 2012. Thatâs the same year he helped coach Team USAâs Suzanne Stetinius to the London Olympics in Modern Pentathlon. Heâs now a coach at Nova Fencing Club in Virginia.
Damien is a former epee fencer who had a successful career at Brandeis University, where he graduated in 2009, and he later won gold in the menâs epee team event at the 2012 North American Cup.
On top of all that, heâs the strategy and data lead for the Team USA national epee team. Weâre going to talk about what that means and more in todayâs episode.

"In each episode, weâll talk to someone interesting within the fencing world, including young fencers just learning the sport, coaches, experts from outside of fencing, fencing parents, referees, Olympians and Paralympians, and many more. Ready? Set? Fence!"

So while this podcast is obviously geared directly towards olympic fencers there's still some elements that historical fencers may find useful. I do doubt a regular hema club, let alone a single person has the same resources as a national olympic fencing team, especially one like USA's national team, however looking into dartfish may still prove useful to hema folks in many places. If nothing else trying to follow how the knowledge gets used by olympians can provide us in lessons on certain seemingly irrelevant parts of our fencing to our general 'game plans' when fighting.

This is my most ambitious piece to dateâŠmaybe my last fanart for a while haha đđ
Some lore thoughts going into this illustration â feel free to ignore:
I was thinking this takes place in S2 in the Zianna RoâMeave rescue arc, where Garroth returns to OâKhasis after many years to rescue his motherâŠHe comes across their oldest (historically, the first in Ruâaun) cathedral and finds it in a wrecked and pillaged state.
The pious folk have pretty much abandoned the cathedral following Zaneâs disappearance for 15 years and the Tuâla invasion was the nail on the coffin. The cathedral is completely barren of life except for the few intact stained glass windows that recount the history of the Divine Warriors.
Around this time itâs revealed that Garroth is the current holder of Esmundâs relicâ is he anxious? Lost? Jumpstarting his quarter-life existential crisis?
I hope that everything here in this illustration captures my vision and conveys it to you. This is pretty much a love letter MCD HAHAHAHA
