Have you ever thought about connecting the scene where Hua Cheng pulls the nail out of Xie Lian's foot after reaffirming his pain, and the extra where Xie Lian refuses to leave Hua Cheng's side even though its causing him increasingly excruciating pain?

Nope, never, but to be fair, I never used to revisit the tgcf extras outside of the cave one (probably cause the formatting of my doc was so weird), but I’ve found a new appreciation for them now. Also, you’re in luck cause that’s actually the most recent one that I read lmao

I think Xie Lian’s relationship to physical pain is very interesting in that he takes a very “no matter what, I can handle it” approach to it, the only time it is broken being in the temple scene. He is willing to endure physical pain as long and as often as it takes to accomplish whatever goal he has set out to do, usually saving others or preventing harm. It’s not that he never feels pain, but he is so skilled at pushing it down that it no longer registers to him, which is why Hua Cheng calling attention to his pain brings it back to the forefront. On the other hand, the extra drives home something about Xie Lian’s character that I feel like is not talked about often enough: physical pain is something that Xie Lian can handle, but abandonment, on the other hand, is not.

So the whole time Xie Lian is feeling this pain in at the beginning of the extra, what he’s thinking about is not upsetting Hua Cheng on his birthday. When the pain becomes physically unbearable and makes him pass out, what he cares about is how it may have ruined the day. When Xie Lian and co find out that the pain is somehow linked to Hua Cheng, all Xie Lian can think about is his husband. But the moment it’s suggested that maybe Hua Cheng stay away until they can find out the origins, Xie Lian panics. After all, pain is just pain, but to be physically separated from a loved one “for his own good”? That was his breaking point. He would rather deal with excruciating physical pain than the emotional pain of being isolated. And remember: the last and really only time physical pain broke Xie Lian also happened at the time in his life that Xie Lian had been completely and utterly abandoned. This was not coincidental. He knows what that feels like, and if he must feel pain, he would rather not feel it alone.

Hahaha alrighty! Behind door #3 we have... Sleeping Beauty AU! This one's very near and dear to my heart, and I think it's a tragedy I haven't been able to finish it/put it out in the world. I've got pretty much the whole thing plotted out, I've just always had a more pressing WIP to work on...

Our story follows an ageless, nameless cultivator who stumbles upon a mysterious kingdom surrounded by thorns, whose every inhabitant rests in a cursed, eternal slumber: the Kingdom of Dreams, Ghost City. Pulled into the dream himself, he meets the kingdom's ruler, and begins to uncover the mysteries of how the kingdom fell to its curse- and what he had to do with it.

I keep thinking about that Tinder Girl text convo and imagining cumplane arguing over each other's names because bingyuan are getting married and need to put Moshang on the invite list but Shen Yuan only knows them as "Airplane" and "Airplane's boyfriend" and Shang Qinghua genuinely mistakes Shen Yuan for "Shen Qingqiu" because he only ever refers to him as "Cucumber bro" and never got his first name from him. Think that bit where everytime he's about to say his name a loud and inopportune noise drowns him out and Airplane refuses to keep asking.

PLEASE LSDKJFLKSDJF i love that in this scenario they're not the ones getting married. it's more like your best man threatening to not come to the wedding because you don't know his name sldkjflksdjf now im imagining sqh being like I OBJECT in the middle of the wedding just because his best bro doesn't know his name (never mind that he also doesn't remember his best bro's name). I also love that binghe and mobei-jun aren't helpful in this scenario, presumably because shen yuan and sqh get so focused on bothering each other about it that they. forget they can just ask their partners what their friends' names are.

The big one that comes to mind right now is my beefleaf gone girl AU, where beefleaf are unhappily married and what follows is, in the style of the novel/movie Gone Girl, a bunch of lying, murder attempts, death faking, fraud, etc.
