Yeah, you've got that right (especially when the closest I can get to Death of the Author is whenever Lucas says he "always" intended to do something that's clearly shown in documents at the time to not have been the case at all, like Greedo shooting first instead of Han simply shooting Greedo to begin with, or even Vader and Anakin being the same person. I can't discount the Rebels as Vietcong that easily though, since unlike the other stuff where he was clearly lying his butt off, that actually WAS backed up by development notes at the time he started writing the films.). And not just with George Lucas, either. I've seen similar disrespectful treatment by Hideo Kojima and his Metal Gear series (his handling of the franchise rivals even George Lucas regarding constantly retconning itself).

As far as your last point, I definitely believe in God, and am a Christian myself (Catholic, more specifically). That said... let's just say that bit about God being in control of everything doesn't exactly give me good vibes. I appreciate your attempt at comforting me, but I don't exactly have that positive of an image of God currently. I guess I can actually blame George Lucas for that, that and my stumbling on the scene when I should have been napping while my parents had the TV on. I'm talking about the climax for Raiders of the Lost Ark. And unfortunately, both fictional media and even certain religious texts such as Jonathan Edwards' Sinners at the Hands of an Angry God worsened my views DESPITE my attempts at trying to view God as a loving father). Put another way, that bit about God being in control of everything makes me think more of these two characters (and they aren't meant to be depicted in a positive light at all. Well, the Patriots from Metal Gear Solid 2 certainly weren't. Bahamut from Final Fantasy XV is a bit more complicated in that he actually WAS meant to be depicted positively in the main game, but then Episode Ardyn came along and added grays to him by effectively revealing he was responsible for how Ardyn turned out in an attempt at getting rid of the Starscourge and then basically blackmailing him and even resorting to torture if he refuses, and then Dawn of the Future turned him into a full-on villain)

What's even more sad regarding Bahamut is that of all those characters, his Vanilla version came the closest alongside Zeno from Dragon Ball Super to outright rehabilitating me regarding my views on God, but then the creators of Final Fantasy XV (and also Dragon Ball Super, the latter arguably being even WORSE due to still treating Zeno as a pure good guy despite his taking joy at erasing universes and even planets and in the manga even planned to destroy more universes, but that's a discussion for another day) cruelly destroyed that bit, ESPECIALLY with Dawn of the Future.

Come to think of it, Darth Plagueis seemed to hint that about the Force as well considering Palpatine apparently was implied to have been conceived by it much like Anakin was (and apparently without any known outside influences, which even Anakin was at least the result of Sith meddling, though it's less the Sith actually created Anakin and more the Midichlorians created him in RESPONSE to said meddling). And it also doesn't help that Palpatine's... vision and communication with the Force right after offing Plagueis in the in-media-res prologue sounded more like an Old Testament reading that was specifically meant to foreshadow Jesus's arrival, the countless voices that will proclaim the lord's name bit (meaning he's less an anti-Christ figure and more of a... pardon the extremely blunt language, but outright bastardization of Jesus Christ himself, a demiurge at best [you know, essentially the Architect's role in the Matrix movies where he was clearly meant by the Wachowskis to be God instead of the devil.]. It certainly raises rather uncomfortable implications that the Force itself might even be evil itself.).

EDIT: The videos vanished for some reason, so I'm simply hyperlinking texts to those videos. Oh yeah, and for a bit of a Star Wars-related trivia for those videos. That elderly guy with the black mecha suit and eyepatch ranting about liberating himself from the Patriots? His English voice actor also voiced Luke Skywalker in the Dark Empire radio drama.

I loved your Hogwarts sorting + loyalty essay! But I'm having a hard time squaring Padme-as-Hufflepuff with what we see of her leadership style. Hufflepuffs operate in teams by establishing consensus (eg Ernie Macmillan's constant appeals to his audience, or Mark Watney's humour->group cohesion) but Padme is VERY independent. She'll ditch anyone who isn't performing and often steps in herself to solve things. She rarely consults others. I think her loyalty is ideological; she's a Gryffindor.

Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn Prologue Q&A | 2019

Scenario Director Toru Osanai, Director Takefumi Terada, and Producer Yuji Shinoda answer questions from fans on the development of FINAL FANTASY XV EPISODE ARDYN PROLOGUE.

Full transcription below cut:

Q: At what point in the production of FFXV, was it decided to create an anime explaining Ardyn’s past?

Yuji: We actually had a poll in 2017 around the time EPISODE GLADIOLUS was released asking out users which character DLC everyone would like to see in the future and Ardyn became #1 in the results. Back then, it was scheduled for game DLC’s to be concluded with EPISODE IGNIS so it was decided then that we would release Ardyn in the format of an anime.

Q: What was most challenging while producing the anime? Did the cancellations of the DLCS’s affect the anime?

Yuji: In terms of challenging, as it was initially decided as only as an anime, we realized along the way we wanted to produce a game as well for our users. Since the anime is set in time 2000 years before the main game and it’s purpose was to explain Ardyn’s character, we hoped that it would also serve as a PR material for the main game. The main game was released 2 years ago so in a way, it was a way for us to communicate with our original FFXV users while showing our gratitude in a different form other than a game which was bit of a challenge for us. Although we had to send out upsetting news regarding the cancellations of the DLC’s towards the end of last year, it did not affect the content of this anime in any way.

Q: What was the main focal point for the anime?

Yuji: We wanted to show the main reasoning behind how Ardyn became who he is and why he acts how he does throughout the main game. Also, to explain why he wanted revenge against the Kingdom of Lucis. Also, in the main game it was hard to tell what Ardyn was thinking and his character was a mystery. We wanted to show a different side of Ardyn through this anime.

Q: How much creative licenses do the director and writers get on Ardyn’s backstory?

Takefumi: The anime was produced by Satellite Inc but regarding the scenario, story, and design, the FFXV production team of Luminous Productions had much of the backstory. Everything from Ardyn’s backstory, history of Kingdom of Lucis, to the story of the gods of Eos, we worked closely and together with Satellite.

Q: What was the one thing you wanted to include but couldn’t?

Toru: We really wanted to show more of the relationship between the 3 main characters (Ardyn, Somnus, and Aera). However, since the anime itself is really short, we were a bit limited in that sense. Also, we wanted to show the world 2000 years before the main game as well but limited again. So, we decided to focus on showing Ardyn’s character.

Q: What is one thing that was important for you to how in terms of Ardyn’s image from the main game?

Takefumi: As all of you know, Ardyn is the main nemesis of enemy within the main game. However, we wanted to show a complete opposite side of what he used to be. Ardyn, the savior for the people and how he slowly became what he is was out goal to show the users through both the anime and game

Q: Please explain to us the concept behind the 3 main characters in the anime?

Takefumi: Somnus’s design was based of Noctis. Thinking about the relationship between Ardyn, we wanted to represent him as a realist and a severe king. However, he became someone opposite character to Noctis. Regarding Aera, she was the only female who ever loved Ardyn. Design was made close to Luna. In the main game, during the battle against Leviathan, there is a scene where Ardyn displays great anger against Luna. I felt that making her look like Luna, it made Ardyn’s character stand out more.

Q: What is the relationship between Aera and Luna? How did Aera become an oracle herself?

Toru: Regarding the relationship of those two… Aera is the first oracle so that would make her Luna’s ancestor. We actually do not have a detailed back story as to how the first oracle became about. However, oracles are able to communicate with the gods from back then who were also looked up upon from the people.

Q: What does Somnus have such a hatred against Ardyn? What happened in the past?

Toru: This might be a bit of a spoiler to answer before watching the anime but in actuality, Somnus does not really hate Ardyn or despise Ardyn. As mentioned, Ardyn used to be a savior character for the people who was more of an idealist or dreamer. On the other hand, Somnus was more of an realist as Terada mentioned earlier and he wanted to save the world in a realistic way. Therefore, his method and way of thinking was simply different from the way from his brother, Ardyn.

Takefumi: Although, they both wanted to save the world and goals were the same, their methods were opposing which caused the conflict.

Q: What is the relationship Ardyn and Bahamut?

Toru: This is a SECRET! That is all. However, the answer to this is revealed throughout the game EPISODE ARDYN. So it would great if everyone can watch the anime then play the game.

Q: What are the birthdays and hobbies of the main characters?

Toru: This is… also a secret! No but this information has never been revealed but… Ardyn’s birthday is April 30th and his age was always stated as unknown but since its been about 2000 years… I would say he’s about 2033 years old?

Takefumi: There was also a factor where the diamond is the birthday stone which represented a strong will. So we gave all strong character’s with a strong wills an April birthday.

Toru: Moving along… His hobbies consisted of playing chess and drinking wine. Aera’s birthday is July 4th and 28 years old. Her hobbies are similar to Luna where they both like to grow flowers. Also, shown in the anime, she also has interest in archaeology.

Takefumi: Doesn’t she also like tea?

Toru: Tea… Not exactly. That’s actually Luna’s hobby. Moving along, Somnus’s birthday is May 9th and he is set to be 30 years old. His hobbies are napping and hunting.

Yuji: Didn’t Somnus and Ardyn play chess together when they were young?

Toru: Yes, they did!

Takefumi: And he used to go hunting with Gilgamesh during his childhood, right?

Toru: That is right, he used to go hunting with him and nap all the time. Just like his name.

Q: Besides Aera’s archaeology, are any of the other hobbies actually shown within the anime or game itself?

Toru: Hmm… Not for Ardyn and Somnus. Even for Aera, you don’t really see much but her hobby for flowers is the origin as to why Luna takes care of the sylleblossom flower in the main game was the concept.

Q: What was the relationship like between the 3 in their childhood?

Toru: There’s actually not much detail regarding Aera’s childhood. As for the brothers Somnus and Ardyn, it wasn’t bad at all in their childhood. As mentioned before, they would play chess together when they were young and Somnus actually looked up to Ardyn. Ardyn also took great care of his competitive little brother Somnus. So they got along really well when they were young.

Q: Is there any possibility to watch Ignis’ ancestors and Gladio’s ancestors?

Takefumi: Yeah. when are we going to get to see them?

Toru: Hmmm… Probably never? Actually though within EPISODE ARDYN, the game... Gladio’s father Clarus is featured.

Yuji: Maybe if we get enough requests and support? We may be able to?

Takefumi: Oh yeah?

Toru: How it will be released? (jokingly)

Q: Why is Ardyn’s chocobo black?

Toru: This is probably referring to the black chocobo Ardyn is riding through town 2000 years ago.

Takefumi: Yes, this is one of the key visuals we released back when the game was initially released.

Toru: This actually... Holds the key to all the secrets in EPISODE ARDYN. So. I really cannot discuss this since it will spoil everything.

Takefumi: We actually never released any infomation regarding the black chocobo’s in FFXV and kept it a secret.

Toru: No, we’re just kidding. I actually looked into it and black chocobo’s are set to be almost extinct and considered a rare species within FFXV. However, there were many of them 2000 years ago and the color black has a special meaning for the Caelum family back then. So Ardyn simply likes the color black officially. Maybe? That is all. This anime shows the side to everyone were not able to see of Ardyn in the main game. I hope this focus on Ardyn’s character will clear up many of the questions user had regarding him and I hope everyone will enjoy both the anime and the upcoming DLC game.

Takefumi: EPISODE ARDYN will be released in March! I would strongly recommend everyone to watch the anime first then play the game to get the full experience and understand Ardyn better. The gameplay is also unique and fun so I hope everyone is looking forward to the release.

L’account Twitter ufficiale del gioco Final Fantasy XV di Square Enix ha recentemente pubblicato una locandina e un teaser dell’anime “Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn Prologue”, rivelando anche che un trailer della miniserie verrà trasmesso sabato.

Il cortometraggio fungerà da prologo per il DLC del gioco intitolato Episode Ardyn che sarà disponibile a partire da marzo 2019. I produttori hanno confermato che l’anime verrà trasmesso prima di quella data, chiarendo i motivi che hanno portato Ardyn a meditare vendetta.

Erano previsti altri tre progetti DLC, Episode Aranea, Episode Lunafreya e Episode Noctis, ma sono poi stati cancellati.

Things I think some people missed:

Ardyn and Somnus have been doing their 'calling' to rid the world of the Scourge for A While before the anime starts, and the gods still have not chosen one to be king.

Despite having not been named king, Somnus has already begun smearing Ardyn's name in the eye of the people. He is actively hunting him down to bring him back to the...old-school citadel??

Ardyn, knowing he's infected and just what his brother does to those he even SUSPECTS of being infected, rightfully stays the fuck away from Somnus and keeps healing people.

Aera has to sneak out of the citadel to see Ardyn, and this puts her at risk as well as the servants who helped her do it. Her situation is exactly like Luna's will be later.

It's heavily implied Somnus had her followed to find Ardyn. When he gives them the slip, Somnus is like, "Well, if he'd have come willingly, he coulda been together with his beloved, but now? Huehuehue."

Gilgamesh kills people who he finds too weak to serve the King; I don't doubt why he chooses Somnus' side in this political chessmatch.

Somnus only cares about the throne and nothing else. Why? Well, even ignoring what he's doing to Ardyn to ruin his shot at it, he also barges into a sacred ritual of the ORACLE'S to ask what the answer was. He just can't wait to be king. And, bless her heart, Aera tells him. Whoops.

Ardyn was the chosen king, the "Crystal" itself tells us this in Episode: Ignis. Aera, who clearly dislikes Somnus going by her reaction to him barging into the ritual, tells Somnus Ardyn will be king, trusting him to Not Be A Little Shit.

Somnus, knowing this, tricks Ardyn into coming back to the citadel so he CAN KILL HIM. The only way to take the throne now is remove Ardyn from the picture.

He claims Ardyn is the traitor trying to take HIS throne, and Ardyn falls for the bait by objecting. Because now Somnus has a social excuse to take Ardyn out. Remember, he's charismatic. He's socially aware enough to know that a lot of people love and trust Ardyn. But that's not going to matter if he shows the crowd Ardyn being a traitor for trying to take the god-given throne from him.

Aera, the only person who knows Somnus is Being A Shit, is silenced by Gilgamesh. Mr. I Slaughter All I Deem Unworthy Even If They're 15-years-old Gilgamesh. Yeah, there's a good reason she doesn't say anything more than, "What?!" when Somnus makes his move.

Somnus might not have intended to kill Aera, but he calls THE ORACLE he just MURDERED a "foolish woman." He cares about her as much as he cares about the people he lit on fire For Teh Gr8er Gud. Long live the king.

The Crystal may reject Ardyn, thus Lucis is inherited by Somnus, but it does NOT choose Somnus. The gods entrust its care to him and his family because the Lucis Caelum line will birth another Chosen King...eventually. Somnus may be able to use its power as Regis does, but he's not pure of heart. He isn't given the Noctis treatment. Because he's nothing like Ardyn was, and he's nothing like Noctis will be.

Somnus probably sounds remorseful because 2000 years is a long time to spend bound to the Ring of the Lucii, forbidden from the afterlife until the Chosen King--y'know, the title your brother had until you killed him and then chained him in prison for, like, ever and struck his name from history just to piss on his grave--comes to free the world from all of the suffering you couldn't end because YOU weren't worthy of true Kinglyness. Like, 2000 years of, "Okay. Maybe I was a bit of an asshole and didn't actually know more than the gods and now the monster I created is toasting a bunch of innocent people like I used to do and... Noctis, be a dear for your ol' grandpappy x112 and put him out of his misery. Kthx."

...Then again, he still sounds like a dick in Kingsglaive so pfft.

Square Enix has released the key art and logo for Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn Prologue, a short animated prologue set before the events of Final Fantasy XV that will provide context as to why Ardyn became wild for revenge in the game.

A trailer for the anime will be released on December 15 at 21:00 JST.

The “Episode Ardyn” downloadable content for Final Fantasy XV is due out in March 2019.

Final Fantasy XV is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Diffuso un primo story trailer per “Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn Prologue”

Pubblicato da Square Enix un primo teaser trailer che fa luce sulla storia raccontata in “Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn Prologue”, anime che fungerà appunto da prologo per l’ultimo DLC del gioco in uscita a marzo, incentrato appunto su Ardyn. 

Il cortometraggio, programmato per febbraio, mostrerà parti del passato del personaggio, chiarendo gli eventi che lo hanno cambiato e i motivi che lo hanno portato a meditare vendetta.

L’ultimo capitolo della famosa saga di JRPG, disponibile per PS4, Xbox One e PC, ha già ispirato una miniserie animata di cinque episodi intitolata “Final Fantasy XV Brotherhood”. Distribuito in Italia da Crunchyroll, l’anime esplora la straordinaria amicizia che lega il principe ereditario Noctis e i suoi tre compagni, gettando le basi dell'avventura che i giocatori vivranno nel videogame.
