日本ではあまり考えられない事なのかもしれないが、ハリウッド映画の編集では脚本通りに編集される事はまず無い。脚本＝活字であり読むもので、編集＝映像と音で観るものなのである。そして誰もが編集を最も重要視していることを示す言葉として良く語られているのが“Film Editing is where re-Directing and re-Writing happen.”、つまり「編集とは再演出、および脚本が書き直しされる場」なのである。

こうした判断をするためには、多くの素材を見て並べて、その場面を成立させるのに必要なショットが揃っているか？、このカットで何を伝えるべきかを考慮し、そのための流れをどう構成すれば観客により伝わるのかを構成し直して行くことそこが、編集者の最も重要な役割なのである。それには基本の編集ロジックを知識として理解しておくことは重要だ。
