Honey Cake <3
Happy Noumenia! Today is the 1st of Skirophorion according to the hellenic lunar calendar. This is the honey cake I made and offered to Apollon, Hestia, Zeus, Hermes and to the gods in general.
Ingredients
210 g all-purpose flour 1-1/2 cups
67 g granulated sugar 1/3 cup
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest from 2 whole lemons
67 g Carapelli Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1/3 cup
130 g unsweetened non-dairy milk 1/2 cup, such as soy or almond milk
113 g honey 1/3 cup
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Honey-Lemon Syrup
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons honey (maple syrup for vegan)
Lemon Glaze
130 g powdered sugar 1 cup
1-1/2 tablespoons lemon juice and up to 2 tablespoons
Optional Garnish:
3 whole fresh figs optional
1/3 cup raspberries optional
1/4 cup edible flowers optional
Instructions
》 Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease a standard 8x4" loaf pan. Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the bottom and long sides of the loaf pan with a little overhang.
》 Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and lemon zest in a medium-size mixing bowl.
》 In a separate bowl whisk together olive oil, milk, honey, vinegar, and vanilla.
》 Add wet mixture to dry and stir with a spatula until incorporated about 1 minute.
》 Spread cake batter into prepared pan and bake on center rack for about 45 minutes or until it is dark golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
》 To make Honey-Lemon Syrup simply whisk together the lemon juice and honey until dissolved.
》 When cake is done remove from oven cool cake in pan on cool rack for 10 minutes. Brush the top of the cake with honey-lemon syrup while it is still warm. Lift cake out of the loaf pan using the parchment paper overhang and cool to room temperature.
》 To make the lemon glaze, whisk lemon juice and powdered sugar until smooth. Start with 1-1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice and add more if the glaze seems too thick. Pour glaze over cooled cake.
》 Optionally decorate the top of the cake with fresh figs, raspberries and edible flowers.
Tumblr media
note from me: this isn't my recipe or picture! mine isn't nearly as stunning! Here's a link to the website this is from <3 make sure the cake is room temperature, slightly warm when you put the glaze on. Then pop it in the refrigerator and it will harden well! It was delicious, and in place of apple cider vinegar I used more lemon juice. I'm vegan, so I was happy to find that I could make this cake vegan! I used self-rising flour in place of all-purpose, baking soda and baking powder.

25/08/2024. Bonjour à tous, I can’t believe that we are hurtling towards the end of August! Where has that month gone? My son had booked his flights out to me towards the end of July and it seemed ages until he was arriving and now it’s just over a week😱. I am so excited, I am like that dog chasing it’s tail 😂.
This week saw 43 years since I passed my driving test 🙈 and I still drive as if I am on the test!
Oyez, oyez, oyez, announcement of the week! “The Trainee Solicitor” is due a name change as with effect from 23 August he has been admitted as a Solicitor. That’s one of your dreams realised now “Mr Solicitor”, it’s great news, 🥳 from a proud mum.
My grandchildren are with “The Photographer” this weekend, being a bank holiday on Monday they will be spending an extra day with him but then he goes back to work on Tuesday and Grandad will be on childminding duties. It’s been a busy week for “The Photographer” as he had a midweek journey to photograph the Scarborough AFC match at Chorley. Last weekend one of his photos was used by BBC Sport so the photos are “getting out there”. As he was leaving work on Friday evening, he was told by a police motorcyclist to wait at the junction and to his surprise heading along the road, flanked by more police motorcyclists was a Mercedes car which he was sure contained “The Queen”. Apparently she made a surprise visit to the Ebor Festival at York Racecourse on the third day (Friday). What a lovely surprise for him to tell his children.
“The Recovery Coordinator” has had “the week from hell!” Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong and as her employment is running short-staffed anyway it has been a nightmare. Fortunately she only has one and a half days at work this coming week then she breaks up for her holidays. I am hoping against hope that this lovely weather we are having continues into the first week of September and that she can enjoy some relaxation in the sun.
“The Jetsetter” has been to Maidenhead, for a friends wedding. I do hope it was a fantastic day and that it was a nice break.
Now it’s back to “The Solicitor” who yesterday lunchtime went out to celebrate his fantastic news with his partner, father, brother, niece and nephew. What a celebration. I do hope there are no “thick heads” this morning.
My “Personal Shopper” has returned from holiday, he has been put to good use since he got back, not only did he do my shopping yesterday, but on Thursday he also pressure washed my patio, gates and the top of the letterbox. He then went to order my prescription from the pharmacy.
Monique celebrates her birthday today and I cannot believe that it is two years since I was sitting in her garden playing with her twin grandchildren who were only 7 months old at the time.
Anie has been down to see me, she brought figs, vine peaches and an apple. I thought she might have to do my shopping for me yesterday, however the Personal Shopper agreed to do it. I was pleased she could have a normal Saturday, visit the market and then on a balmy afternoon she was going to visit her garden.
I was up with the larks yesterday as I wanted to walk to the sunflower field down the road to take some photos for the children. We had a video call and my grandson wanted to see my house so I wandered round showing him around, his sister kept saying, I was in there, and sure enough she had been when Daddy brought her over last year. I think my grandson liked my garden if only because it had an airer like Mummy’s. He liked upstairs best, maybe because downstairs is a “work in orogress”, while I am preparing for the visitors.
I was in Paris on Monday, blimey could that driver make the car move! We were doing 160k/hr on a 130 road 🙈. We got there in good time and would have been home quicker if someone at the hospital had phoned and given the taxi office a departure time. I only needed a platelet transfusion my haemoglobin had increased a bit from the previous Friday.
I was then at Troyes on Friday where the platelets had dropped again but not as low as they had been. The haemoglobin had increased yet again but the doctor said it was probably due to one of the injections I have once a week. He said that is better than requiring a transfusion though. To try and sort out my low blood pressure, dosage of my blood pressure tablet has been reduced by half. I now feel like a new woman!
The cleaner has been again and I am going to type a list of jobs to be done weekly/monthly.
I baked a cake yesterday afternoon I don’t know why but I don’t seem to be enjoying some of these foods at the moment.
When my visitors have gone back home, I am going to sort out lots of stuff for the charity shop, decheterie (tip) and anything which could be useful to some of the refugee places.
I had a package arrive from Worcester which included a tea towel, a penguin pin for a coat or jacket and a small penguin “pebble” to keep in my pocket. The penguins have been around the city, lots of them, large and small, doing “The Waddle”.
Then I received a gift from the Îles d’Oleron which was a bag containing some salt, caramel chip biscuits, puffed rice coated in chocolate and caramel plus a lavender bag which smells divine. I have lots of these in wardrobes, drawers etc.
I read in the local newspaper that the fountain which was due to be installed in front of the Town Hall and up and running by July, had been slowed down due to the discovery of an air raid shelter! This work will now be completed during September. I guess that is when everyone is back from holidays.
I had messaged Nicolas (the gardener) to come and cut the lawn and hedges. He said he would try to come and mow on Friday but I guess he must be a busy man as he never came. As he passes my house on his way home he tends to do my jobs if he has finished jobs early and would otherwise go straight home.
I also messaged the roofer, I had phoned and left a message, sent a text message and then sent an email. With the lack of response I can only assume 🙄 that he is on holiday.
I also messaged the plumber who never responded. I don’t think he is on holiday as I have seen his van in the area. Will ring and speak to him I think next week.
Then, I had put off contacting the man to clean the outside walls of the house as I hate speaking on the phone. Anyway I sent a text, he replied saying he is on holiday but will contact me on Sunday. I guess 50% success rate isn’t too bad.
Although my life is still dictated by the hospital visits, I am happy to be dealing with other things I wanted to do. Having a walk is making me feel much better and not being out of breath or as wary, which I have to be but not to the extent that I am wrapped in cotton wool.
It’s difficult to think up songs that have meant something to me over the years. However, I just remembered this one, it’s Lady Love Me (One More Time) by George Benson which was released in 1983.
I can’t believe I haven’t had a song by this next singer, there are a few which I absolutely love but I have chosen this particular song as it reminds me of holidays, being on the night train from York to Bristol (Temple Meads) then a change onto the train to Penzance in Cornwall. It was in the days when trains had compartments (I loved those trains). It was the first time I had been to Cornwall but it was not to be the last time. My sister was coming up three years old and the only bit of the song she could (nearly) sing was “working all day, all day, all day”. The song is Matthew & Son by (as he was then) Cat Stevens and the year was 1967.
Have a good week until next week.

Thanks to Jim Theler for this week’s post –
When Europeans first settled in Wisconsin, wild turkeys were found south of a line running from Prairie du Chein to Green Bay (Schorger 1942:175-178, Fig. 1). This historic distribution matches archaeological records of bird bones from Wisconsin sites. In the La Crosse area, turkey bones have only been found at ten Oneota sites, and all but one are bones from the wingtips (Theler 2000:129-130). The photo on the right show the underside (ventral view) of a wild turkey wing with feathers removed to expose the underlying bones, with the large primary and secondary feathers on the posterior portion in place. The photo on the left shows the modern, partially cleaned turkey wing; to its left is a modern set of wingtip (distal) bones. These include the safety pin shaped carpometacarpus, with the associated digits and phalanx bones. These bones support the ten primary feathers on each wing. Historic accounts of Native Americans' usage (Schorger 1966:361-62) and information from modern primitive archery enthusiasts indicate that the stiff primaries are among the best bird feathers for fletching arrows. The secondaries are softer and do not work as well. The two sets of bones to the left of the modern bones are wingtip bones, found at Oneota sites, that would have supported the primary feathers. The La Crosse Oneota people were archers who used lightweight arrow points and lived north of the pre-modern range of wild turkeys, so it seems likely that wingtips were brought into the area from the south.

Daily Wrap Up February 27-March 1, 2023
Under the cut:
Ukrainians have reported attacks in the Bilohorivka and Kreminna areas in the eastern Luhansk region of Ukraine."There is constant shelling of our de-occupied settlements along the front line, despite the fact that there are many civilians in some settlements," Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said. "The enemy is well aware of this and still it shells with heavy caliber weapons." For the past two months, the front lines close to the border of Luhansk and Kharkiv regions have seen heavy exchanges of fire as well as fighting in the forests west of Kreminna, which is held by the Russians.
Russia has lost at least 130 tanks and armoured personnel carriers in a three-week battle in the town of Vuhledar in southern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian officials said the “epic” fight on a plain near Vuhledar produced the biggest tank battle of the war so far and a stinging setback for the Russians, the New York Times reports.
Finland has begun construction of a 200km fence on the Russian border, the country’s border guard has announced. Terrain work would begin today “with forest clearance and will proceed in such a way that road construction and fence installation can be started in March”, the Finnish border guard said in a statement.
Ukrainian forces hung onto their positions in the ruined eastern city of Bakhmut early on Thursday under constant attack from Russian troops amid signs time might be running out. Russia says seizing Bakhmut would open the way to fully controlling the rest of the strategic Donbas industrial region bordering Russia, one of the main objectives of its invasion a year ago on Feb. 24.
Ukrainian air defense is shooting down 80% of Russian missiles, according to Lieutenant General Serhii Naiev, commander of the Ukrainian Joint Forces.
“Ukrainians have reported attacks in the Bilohorivka and Kreminna areas in the eastern Luhansk region of Ukraine.
"There is constant shelling of our de-occupied settlements along the front line, despite the fact that there are many civilians in some settlements," Serhiy Hayday, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said. "The enemy is well aware of this and still it shells with heavy caliber weapons." For the past two months, the front lines close to the border of Luhansk and Kharkiv regions have seen heavy exchanges of fire as well as fighting in the forests west of Kreminna, which is held by the Russians.
"They also have a lot of Lancet kamikaze drones, and they are trying to use them to search for positions and equipment and to inflict fire," Hayday said.
There has also been heavy fighting east of the town of Kupyansk, which is in the same zone.
The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service released video of aerial reconnaissance in the area, saying that over the past few days 117 drone reconnaissance flights had helped fix artillery fire.
The General Staff said that in the northern region of Kharkiv, several civilians had been wounded in Russian rocket attacks. It reported heavy shelling along the frontline that runs north-south on the Luhansk-Kharkiv border.
Southwest of Donetsk city, "the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions," according to the General Staff.
CNN has geolocated video published by one Ukrainian brigade showing several Russian tanks and fighting vehicles being struck near the town of Avdiivka.
"In the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson directions, the enemy is defending," the General Staff said, but "in some areas, it is trying to create conditions for an offensive."
The General Staff said Russian artillery had fired at more than 40 settlements in the long front line that runs from Donetsk through Zaporizhzhia and into Kherson.”-via CNN

“Russia has lost at least 130 tanks and armoured personnel carriers in a three-week battle in the town of Vuhledar in southern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian officials said the “epic” fight on a plain near Vuhledar produced the biggest tank battle of the war so far and a stinging setback for the Russians, the New York Times reports.
Both sides sent tanks into the fray, “with the Russians thrusting forward in columns and the Ukrainians manoeuvring defensively, firing from a distance or from hiding places as Russian columns came into their sights”, the paper writes.
When it was over, not only had Russia failed to capture Vuhledar, but it also had made the same mistake that cost Moscow hundreds of tanks earlier in the war: advancing columns into ambushes.
The remains of the Russian tanks, blown up on mines, hit with artillery or destroyed by anti-tank missiles, now litter farm fields all about the coal mining town, according to Ukrainian military drone footage.
Russian troops also suffered a lack of experienced tank commanders in Vuhledar, and many of the fighters consisted of newly conscripted soldiers who had not been trained in Ukraine’s tactics for ambushing columns, the paper says. Ambushes have been Ukraine’s signature tactic against Russian armoured columns since the early days of the war.
By last week, Russia had lost so many machines to sustained armoured assaults that they had changed tactics and resorted only to infantry attacks, Ukrainian commanders said.”-via The Guardian

“Finland has begun construction of a 200km fence on the Russian border, the country’s border guard has announced.
Terrain work would begin today “with forest clearance and will proceed in such a way that road construction and fence installation can be started in March”, the Finnish border guard said in a statement.
The 3km pilot project at the border crossing near Imatra is expected to be completed by the end of June, it added. Construction of a further 70km, mainly in southeastern Finland, will take place between 2023 and 2025.
The fence will be more than 3 metres tall with barbed wire at the top, and particularly sensitive areas will be equipped with night vision cameras, lights and loudspeakers.
Currently, Finland’s borders are secured primarily by light wooden fences, mainly designed to stop livestock.
Although the Finland-Russia border has “worked well” in the past, Brig Gen Jari Tolppanen told AFP in November that the war in Ukraine had changed the security situation “fundamentally” and that a border fence was “indispensable” to stop large-scale illegal entries from Russian territory.”-via The Guardian

Russia says seizing Bakhmut would open the way to fully controlling the rest of the strategic Donbas industrial region bordering Russia, one of the main objectives of its invasion a year ago on Feb. 24.
Ukraine says Bakhmut has limited strategic value but has nevertheless put up fierce resistance. Not everyone in Ukraine is convinced that defending Bakhmut can go on indefinitely.
"I would not go as far as to say the situation is critical, but it is threatening," Ukrainian member of parliament Serhiy Rakhmanin said on Ukrainian NV radio on Wednesday night.
"From my standpoint, it is not logical to defend Bakhmut at any cost," Rakhmanin said. "But for the moment, Bakhmut will be defended with several aims - firstly, to inflict as many Russian losses as possible and make Russia use its ammunition and resources."
No lines of defence should be allowed to collapse, Rakhmanin said, and "there are two ways to approach this - an organised retreat or simple flight. And we cannot allow flight to take place under any circumstances."”-via Reuters
~
“Ukrainian air defense is shooting down 80% of Russian missiles, according to Lieutenant General Serhii Naiev, commander of the Ukrainian Joint Forces.
"At the moment, the percentage of missile interceptions has changed significantly and is at 80% or even higher in some cases. Our air defense specialists have become more professional and competent," Naiev said on March 1.
Naiev added that Russia is changing its methods and tactics when it comes to air attacks.
"Therefore, we conduct analysis after each strike," said Naiev. "This analysis is necessary, and the commanders make decisions accordingly to ensure the resilience of the air defense is at the highest level."”-via Kyiv Independent

did you see the price of the upcoming iono pokemon scale? there isn't even a painted prototype yet and it feels very out of place given koto's usual pricing.
Yup... i dont know why shes £160... I guess Bellibolt is pretty big but not as big as Leon+Char. Although their Pokemon line has been slowly increasing since their Leon fig at £150, I don't get how that's less than Iono+Belli. But their Hisuian Zorua/Zoruark is £130 (compared to the 2022 Lati@s at only £90) and Korai/Miraidon are at £160 which is...... I think they're thinking they can get away with it since everyone else is raising prices too. Especially since people are literally going mad preordering her which they will take as a sign to just carry on.
Luckly I'm not huuuuugely interested in her, but if they do Larry, Rika, Brassius, or Arvin I'm absolutely fucked LOL!!!!!!!!!

Citrus Gardenia
Here we have our sweet couple, happily perched on beautiful white gardenias (栀子花, the Zhī Zi Huā whose initials match our ZZH) and our favorite citrus fruit 🍊
The inspiration for this figs? PURE LOVE.
Yep, this is 100% no holds barred, pull no punches, sweet sweet Junzhe romance. And I am here for it.
Tumblr media
I love the soft upwards curve of Zhehan's eyes, and the equally soft downward curve of Junjun's. And of course, the rings. You can see Junjun's ring very well here, and you can see Zhehan's in the following picture...
Tumblr media
There we go! We also get my favorite long-haired ponytail look for Zhehan. I'll take this moment to point out I'd really love to see Junjun in this same hairstyle at least once in my life (and of course, memorialized in fig form). I'll take the next moment to point out my absolute weakness for people lovingly touching someone on the cheek. It's just so tender and gentle and speaks volumes of love and care.
I appreciate how the fig maker went all-in on the gardenia flower here - it's so large and beautiful that you can barely see the orange.
Tumblr media
And the reverse is true on the orange side! The leaves from the gardenias could easily be the leaves for the oranges, and you only get a little peek at the white of the flowers. I really enjoy the contrast of both sides being so different.
We get a nice shot of Hanhan's earrings, and of course from this side view you get Junjun's hand gently covering Zhehan's. I know I keep saying it, but this set is just pure sweetness.
Tumblr media
You can get both the oranges and the flowers from this side!
Tumblr media
A little more detail - you can see the texturing on the oranges here.
Tumblr media
The box cards mirror the figs - nothing too much added here.
Tumblr media
I saved part of the artwork on the box itself since it was so different and frankly just adorable. Smooching chibis under the banner of Our Family? Sign me up.
This set is meant for and really delivers to us CP fans (couple fans). Our Family indeed!

Nubian Levallois technology associated with southernmost Neanderthals
Alternate occupations of the Levant by Neanderthal and Homo sapiens populations
Neanderthals occurred widely across north Eurasian landscapes, but between ~ 70 and 50 thousand years ago (ka) they expanded southwards into the Levant, which had previously been inhabited by Homo sapiens. Palaeoanthropological research in the first half of the twentieth century demonstrated alternate occupations of the Levant by Neanderthal and Homo sapiens populations, yet key early findings have largely been overlooked in later studies. Here, we present the results of new examinations of both the fossil and archaeological collections from Shukbah Cave, located in the Palestinian West Bank, presenting new quantitative analyses of a hominin lower first molar and associated stone tool assemblage. The hominin tooth shows clear Neanderthal affinities, making it the southernmost known fossil specimen of this population/species. The associated Middle Palaeolithic stone tool assemblage is dominated by Levallois reduction methods, including the presence of Nubian Levallois points and cores. This is the first direct association between Neanderthals and Nubian Levallois technology, demonstrating that this stone tool technology should not be considered an exclusive marker of Homo sapiens.
In the Late Pleistocene, Homo sapiens occupied the Levant during Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5: 130–71 ka) 11,12,13 then are next documented in the region from ~ 50 ka onwards 14,15. With the onset of cooler conditions at the start of MIS 4 (71–59 ka) 16,17,18,19 fossils of Neanderthal populations have consistently been recovered from the wooded landscapes of the eastern Mediterranean coast associated with late Middle Palaeolithic assemblages 20,21,22 (Fig. 1).
Earlier evidence for the Neanderthal occupations of the region remain mired in controversy, such as the dating and provenance of Tabun C123,24. Following MIS 5, therefore, a substantive change in hominin demography can be observed in the Levant, with an expansion of Neanderthals from their northern distribution into regions previously occupied by Homo sapiens.

Fig II-18: CO2 går opp mens hetebølger går ned. (Heat: Modified from Christy 2015,…
