Random Summer Days and School Days Yuri

So I recently stumbled upon an official published by Overflow Artbook of Summer Days and School Days that "among other things" includes some Yuri images not based on anything that happens in either game or the Anime or the Manga.

Sekai/Kotonoha is the one that goes have explicit basis in the Canon of the original Game via it's Threesome ending.

But there's also one image of Youko and Mai which is great for those who want more Yuri of women in their 30s.

But what was truly random to me is multiple Kotonoha/Setsuna Yuri images. These two barely interact in the Games and are purely hostile to each other in the Anime.

But that would baffle me nearly as much if it weren't the one Yuri pairing it lacks. To me anyone looking at this franchise with any Yuri Googles at all should first and foremost be shipping Sekai and Satsuna, they have a classic Class S dynamic.

so, I read the full fanlore page for that whole ‘fandom ghost’ thing about m/m and the way there’s this one character that keeps being written into every character over and over, across pairings, inserted into a usually minor or underdeveloped character, etc

and there was a section on a female ghost that also tends to show up in a lot of these m/m fics, a smart, sassy, beautiful female character who is also reduced to being an enabler for the m/m ship, etc. 

And while I don’t really read m/m, that does track with my limited exposure.

BUT, I think there is also a fandom ghost in f/f fic too. I honestly don’t read the wider f/f widely enough to articulate it as much, just what’s in my fandoms and I don’t really have an expansive set of them or add new ones that easily.

BUT in my experience, and from what I see in summaries and tags on ao3 and posts here on tumblr, there is a common character archtype wedged into characters regardless of if they fit, across a lot of femmeslash stories.

I can’t give a solid point by point as I write this at 5 in the morning, coming off stewing over the thoughts in my sleep, or so it feels, but like:

the m/m fandom ghost is a type a personality, controlled and tsundere and hypercompetent and gets wrecked by the messy guy that comes in and destroys their carefully crafted life, etc.

The f/f fandom ghost that I’ve seen is actually the opposite. That is, when given two characters that seem like a viable ship, one of the characters is whacked with a hammer until she fits a mold: an often clumsy or perhaps more accurately careless, butch (and made more so than her canon presentation), very muscular (again, more so than her canon presentation), often quite a ladies woman, very toppy, definitely plays opposite a more repressed or controlled character (but usually one who is bettered rooted in canon as being that), and destroys that character’s neat little world. They are usually, despite their butchness, a lot sillier or softer outside the bedroom, again, and they think sunshine comes out of the other character’s ass even before they get together and -

I’m starting to run into some limitations on the specific words because I just don’t read this enough to stop and articulate it (because I often close out of F/F fics that get too into wedging the characters into archetypes like this rather than the characters themselves (because it does happen a lot) but I very much do have a ‘I know it when I see it’ thing happening here.

I’ve seen it crop up in Buffy/Faith, Kara/Lena, Regina/Emma and in others I have read less extensively (there are F/F ships I’ve never seen it in, like Tara/Willow) that I’m not thinking of specifically

And like, there is a bit of a difference between the m/m fandom ghost, which is really the same character being dressed in a new skin over and over, and that skin usually being a minor or secondary character, etc, and this f/f one, which is more likely (but not always) to be fit into a fairly prominent character, and is less like one character wearing different skin and more many square characters being badly bashed into one round hole, but

I feel like I’m on to something here. For some femmeslash writers, there really are a lot of fics that feel like they’re not writing the two characters. They’re writing the one character and an archetype that may not actually fit the other character all that well, but damn the Torpedos and full speed ahead.

Sokabine Positivity Week

I've had 'Good Luck Babe!' on repeat lately, so I'm in a very femmeslash mood XD so for FSF, Hermione/Luna (who, to my knowledge, are a new ship for you? I hate to give you repetition when you deserve variety for enrichment)

Lady Luna Lovegood is brilliant, there's no question of that. Her mind works in such fascinating, frustrating ways, ways that Miss Hermione Granger cannot follow with her own logical, rational mindset.

It's galling to sometimes look at the pureblood witch she loves, her fellow Ravenclaw who is sweet and whimsical and adventurous, and feel inferior, lesser, unimaginative and unintelligent.

"I'm going to kiss whatever you're thinking that has put that frown on your face right out of your head," Luna whispers before putting deed to word.

Hermione melts into the tender touch and allows Luna's love to banish her insecurities.

These f/f fic discussions reminds me of the reason why I started writing m/m fics. when I was a teen I was harassed for writing dark femmeslash fic to the point I gave up, it wasn’t worth my sanity. So I switched to m/m for 10 + years. I even stayed away from writing m/f fic too incase I angered the same crowd for writing dark/abusive female characters. I didn’t particularly like m/m but I came to like it far more than f/f because no one ever harassed me for writing the dynamics I liked to write. I did eventually start writing female characters again, when I felt a little safer and confident in my writing and got thicker skin, but I don’t know how long it will take me to write f/f again because the messages I was sent were horrific threats of violence. I have branched out and added them as background ships but I never tag for f/f, because they’re not center stage.

AR Ship Week - Fandom in 2024

Another year, another shipweek, and another State of the AR Shipping Fandom post. This is the first weekly post leading up to the Alex Rider Ship Week. Just under 4 weeks to go!

This post focuses on pre-S3 fandom, since the data was scraped before the season was released, but we might do an update for post-S3 fics. For methodology, it can be found both on the graphic analysis pages and in the notes at the bottom of this post. For those only curious about the popular pairings this year (1), feel free to read right on.

This year, we have analysed a few specific shipping stats to get a look at us as a fandom.

We have also created an interactive dashboard of all the graphs for you to explore. This is where the following data was taken from, as well as some bonus visuals!

A Timeline of AO3

For a blast from the past, we took a look at the shipping timeline - the count of fics and authors per year for the top ten most popular AR ships - and found immediate proof that as a shipping fandom, we're still small enough that a few, determined people can make a difference. AR fandom's use of AO3 as its primary fandom purveyor is fairly recent, as most of its history can be found on FFnet, but with a total of just under 3k fics as of April 20th, we're gaining on FFnet's 4.5k of AR fics at a very respectable pace.

Some particular developments were:

The number of Yalex authors was about the same in 2021 - 2023 (just around 40) but the number of Yalex fics in 2022 was almost double that of 2021 and 2023. This was not due to a sudden, imported backlog that we could see but a handful of popular events/challenges and potentially the release of S2 in December of 2021.

Tom/Alex and Yassen/Ian both had a peak of fics in 2021, most likely because of the release of S1 that gave Tom a much larger part and offered an intriguing look at Yassen and Ian's potential past.

Fiona/Sabina had a huge spike in fics in 2023 due to a Femmeslash February event (2) that sent it firmly up the ranks of popular ships.

The State of the OTP

For the top ten AR ships, we also took a look at how many of the writers that had written other AR ships (and which ones) to look for interesting patterns and to see if there was any real difference to spot. As it turns out, the answer was a resounding yes:

At one extreme, we have Alexmis (Alex Rider/Artemis Fowl) which is a fandom unto itself. Only 20 percent of the writers of the pairing have written for other pairings in AR fandom fics, and Alexmis fics as a whole tend to lean more towards adding Alex to the Artemis Fowl world rather than vice versa (3).

In the middle range, we have Yalex and Alex/Wolf - two pairings about as old as the fandom itself, and which both have an OTP percentage around 55 - as well as (mostly) newcomers Tom/Alex and Kyra/Alex, both with an OTP percentage in the 40-50 range.

At the other extreme, we have Yassen/John with an OTP percentage of just 4. Fiona/Sabina does it one better with an OTP rate of 0 (!) but the sample size here is so small it makes no meaning to compare it.

So what other pairings do these writers enjoy indulging in, then?

Yalex writers really like their Yassen pairings. Out of the combined number of non-Yalex fics the Yalex authors have written, 24 percent of them are Yassen/Ian and 22 percent are Yassen/John. This means that almost half of their non-Yalex pairings feature Yassen in some way.

70 percent of John/Helen shippers have written other pairings, too - probably because of the pairing's nature as a background part of Alex's story and not necessarily the focus of a shipfic they're in. 30 percent of the fics written by John/Helen writers outside of the ship are Yalex (and 6 percent are Yassen/John).

The case is even more extreme for Yassen/John, which is firmly entwined with the Yalex pairing. 96 percent of the writers have written other AR ships, with three quarters of those fics being Yalex.

Text Analysis

We also ran a text analysis on the shipfics to look for patterns and recurring details in the writing - first in general, then for specific ships. The amount of detail for each ship depends a lot on the sample size, which results in a detailed, varied word cloud for Yalex and somewhat less so for several of the smaller ships.

For that analysis, we recommend clicking around to explore the word clouds and get a feel for the different ships, but for the ambitious types, we have a word hunt ready as well (4):

Note on methodology:

The two Alex Rider sections (main + TV) were scraped over the course of two days in early March 2024, except for fics that were locked to AO3 users only (5). For the author specific statistics, we excluded orphan_account and anonymous authors. Median measures were chosen over average the majority of the time to account for outliers, especially in the case of the rarer pairings (6).

For ship-analysis, a fic counts under every pairing it has. This means that someone who writes Yassen/Alex, Yassen/John and Yassen/Ian in the same fic (7) will count as an author for all three pairings and under the Yalex OTP analysis, they will have an additional fic marked under both Yassen/John and Yassen/Ian.

(1) Yalex. It's Yalex. Look, we're not even going to bother posting the stats for that. It's still Yalex, trust us. Though we can talk again next year, considering how well Kyralex is currently doing post-S3. (2) Proving that a few, determined writers can make or break the non-Yalex ship rankings. Please use this power for good; if someone manages to get Sayle/Nadia Vole or something into the top three next year, I'm outsourcing that part of the stat post to a particularly enthusiastic raccoon with a keyboard. (3) Canonically, the wholesale kidnapping of Alex is pretty on-brand for Alex Rider supervillains so really, Artemis is in excellent company. (4) Technically two, but there is unsurprisingly a lot of overlap between the general wordcloud and the Yalex one. For those curious, here's the Word Hunt, Yalex edition:

POV: Young Royals is an early 2000s Web 1.0 juggernaut megafandom

During my hiatus earlier this week, @heliza24 and I had a conversation about what Young Royals fandom would be like if it were not a modestly-sized tumblr fandom in the 2020s, but rather an early 00s juggernaut megafandom like the kind you saw on livejournal and individual web pages scattered throughout the internet.

Note: the tone here is 100% silly and inspired by a) my personal history in long ago fandoms and b) repeated viewings of fandom history videos by @strange-aeons. The internet had a bit more of a “wild west” feeling back in those days and you will see that reflected in our ideas.

A lightly edited transcript of my conversation with heliza about fanfic archive names and potential early internet dramas follows…

blue: So here’s a topic of discussion YR fandom hasn't done yet. What would each pairing's archive be called if we were watching this show in 2003? I feel like Wilmon would have a few archives, each with a different flavor. Like there'd be a catch-all archive that's pretty friendly and welcoming, an archive just made up of fics where they're adults, and then something for kink and/or dark fic (or those would be separate)

heliza: Our weird multi shipping poly archive is called sprucewood obvs!

blue: Oh there'd probably also be a Wilmon archive that's Edmar RPF-friendly

heliza: One of them would be called The Frog Prince and the Popstar. Maybe that's the RPF favorable one, idk.

blue: Originally was going to say the catch-all, but I think you're right. The catch-all friendly archive would be The Fish Tank.

heliza: Yes love that ahaha. Is the kinky one like Fuck the Monarchy or something like that?

blue: Something like that. Although. Okay there might be two adult archives, but only as a result of an intense fandom schism I feel like there'd be an offshoot of Fuck the Monarchy for people who want King Wilhelm and Prince Consort Simon. Something like King & Consort.

heliza: Ahahah yes perfect. I think there would be a separate Sargust archive! What would you call it?

blue: Yes! With a little cordoned off adult section with its own name. Hmmm I haven't thought of a name yet but I feel like the web design of it would be very Goth.

heliza: Absolutely.

blue: Black backgrounds. Blood red rose incorporated in the web design. Horses, naturally.

heliza: ... The Stables?

blue: Secret Stables

heliza: Yes good

blue: The adult section of the website would be called something extreme like ~Bit & Bridle~

heliza: Perfect

blue: The Stedrika archive is called Lavender Crush because of Stella's hair in S2. It's small but the webmistress is very dedicated and very transparent with her updates.

heliza: yes haha and she's always trying to convert people to femslash. I feel like she would eventually let Sara/Felice and Maddie/Rosh in as well.

blue: I think she co-runs a second site called Manor House which is all YR femmeslash.

heliza: oh right of course

blue: The other webmistress of that site is her wife ten years later.

heliza: Yessss. Strangeaeons makes a video about them. Because there's enough drama but then they end up together

blue: Yes! I think the other mod ran a Rosh and Ayub fan page. Oh there'd be a general fandom archive called Hillerska Skolan Library or something, but it would be a lot of cross-posting. 

blue: I feel like we need a Forest Ridge archive too.

heliza: Is that where the Walty and Nilcent goes?

blue: Yes. And like. Alexander being shipped with various people. I feel like it's 2003 so there's lots of combos. And some Wilhelm/Simon/Henry? It would exist, don't ask me how I know, it's just vibes.

heliza: There's a renegade writer who keeps writing Wilhelm/Nils and one who posts August/Simon and it sends the site into an epic fight because there are some mods who insist that this is for ALL THE BOYS EXCEPT SIMON AND WILHELM. And some of them don't mind.

blue: Omg there'd be a small August/Simon archive too

heliza: The lavender crush people are like "wow those boyslashers are intense"

blue: But it's all cross-posting with Forest Ridge… Oh god. Oh god I just thought of the name of the Simon/August archive help.

heliza: Go on

blue: Ok ok… it's a rowing pun… forgive me… it'd be called… Take Out Your Cox

heliza: АНАНАНАНА INCREDIBLE

blue: There's actually a violent schism among sargusters about whether it's ok to also ship Simon/August or not. This schism lines up almost exactly with one's sargust kink preferences and ability to have a sense of humor.

heliza: "It's incest if you ship both!!!"

blue: If a sargust has written dom August, then they are against Simon/August. If a sargust writes Sara domming or writes them switchy, and they have a sense of humor, they definitely write Simon/August… also is the Forest Ridge archive just called Forest Ridge? Wait. The Forest Ridge Archive is called On The Table.

heliza: Oh yes perfect.

blue: OK ALSO—IT IS 2002 OF COURSE THERE IS AN INCEST ARCHIVE SIGH. "Royal Family Affairs" or something.

heliza: Wilhelm/Erik would be big I think

blue: Wilhelm/Erik, Erik/August, any number of other things. Ok but is it primarily dudeslash. Do they shut out the Kristina/Carl Johan shippers? Is that on fandom_wank?

heliza: I feel like the mods would have to let it on because technically it fits the description. But there would be a side chat bitching about it. Wilhelm/August!!! There would be that too.

blue: The mods who are against Kristina/Carl Johan would bitch in an AlM chatroom. Eventually screencaps are leaked, and the Kristina/Carl Johan people start their own archive called Unfortunate Romance.

blue: Ok one more thing. We need a name for the Felice specific archive. Where the Felice/Wilhelm/Simon polyshippers hang out in abundance. I grant this one to you, heliza.

heliza: Is that not Sprucewood? Or a different name?

blue: I leave it to you!

heliza: We haven't used sprucewood yet so I think we should!

blue: Sounds good to me!

heliza: Or if it's just Felice centered it could be Modern Nobility. I think Sprucewood is a reactionary thing actually, where the mods specifically say that all ships are allowed after drama has gone down at enough of the other sites.

blue: Yes. Sprucewood is also the most poly and kink friendly of the sites.

I liked that this was a less sunny/happy/vacation-y story about repression and self-discovery. The summer's not happy and carefree for everyone. But there is hope at the end of this one.

Turns out I like fics where Bitty makes a go of it for the NHL! Loved seeing Jack and Bitty letting down their guard and risking being hurt in this one. Super sweet and a little spicy at the end :) Nothing better than that.

This was another work that wasn't sun-drenched and happy. I loved to see the gritty, almost gothic setting; loved to see some CP femmeslash. Loved to see the teeth and the texture here. Short and... piquant.

I keep thinking about this one. Listen, Shitty Knight is... essential. He is the GLUE that holds together CP Year One for me, okay? I know that this fic is primarily about Bitty and his parents' relationship, and his crush on Jack, and that is all done deftly and wonderfully. But Shitty is the standout for me here. (Also I now need to see the movie this is based on.)

God. There's not many, alas. I've seen fledgling/Heather, but the power dynamics are frankly... not great. My own fledgling, Sierra, slept with Jeanette and ended up with a nice dynamic going with VV (I hc they dated for a few years), and if Damsel had been interested, she would have been super into that.

I think your main options are going to be a female fledgling with one of the female characters (Jeanette and/or Therese, VV, Damsel, Ming-Xiao, Venus, Heather if you don't mind exploring those power imbalances... Imalia? Pisha? You might get eaten, but hey! That's just a risk of Cainite dating in general!), since most don't actually interact.

I do see a fun possible dynamic between Damsel and VV! Both Anarchs, but very different 'flavours', both in how they approach being an Anarch, and general personality. Or some interesting stuff between VV and Jeanette, and their different approaches to sexuality. Maybe Damsel and her terrible crush on that cute mortal bartender down the street?

But yeah, tricky, just by virtue of a) Bloodlines not having a ton of prominent female characters in the first place, b) most of them being in different domains, and c) most of them never meeting or interacting in any way XD;; Not that that actually stops people, in fairness!

How long I've been at this: many, many MANY years.

Types of content I create: fanfiction (main), graphics (occasional), fanvids (former, no longer have access to footage or know a current program; this may change one day), fanmixes

What I will write: romance, fluff, banter, tasteful intimacy, AUs and canon divergence.

What I won't write: explicit or graphic content (sex and violence), most kinks, slash and femmeslash (not anything wrong with it, but not my cup of tea writing wise and there are much better suited creators for it).
