Every Instance of Dazai's Ability Being Used, and the Few Times it Doesn't Work

Because I really wanted to look into the logistics of Dazai's ability, I decided that I wanted to look through every source of media (barring BEAST) I could for when his ability has been used. This includes:

The First Time we See it Used (Chronologically) - Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen

The first instance that Dazai's ability is ever used is on Nakahara Chuuya in Phase.01, as written below.

(Dazai) placed a hand on Chuuya's neck. "Sorry, but gravity is no longer yours to control." Dazai's skill also activated when he touched his target. He had the power to halt and nullify all skills. It was the ultimate anti-skill, no exceptions.

This is a classic example of Dazai's ability working traditionally, where he has direct skin-to-skin contact with Chuuya. Since Chuuya's ability is internal, as long Dazai touches him, he cannot use it.

Then, near the end of the novel, he uses his ability to nullify Arthur Rimbaud's ability against Nakahara Chuuya.

In (Dazai's) left hand was a piece of fabric: a garland he'd used as decoration for Chuuya's fake party. The long garland dragged along the ground, cleverly hidden in the shadows of floating debris. One end of the cloth was stuffed inside Chuuya's clothes. "I told Chuuya to pick up this garland when you destroyed the nearby building," Dazai said with a child-like grin. "Then I tied it to myself using my skill," Chuuya added with the scythe still piercing his arm. "I wrapped it around my entire body and made sure it was hidden underneath my clothes." "After that, I simply touched the other end." Dazai held up the cloth. "Want to guess what happened then?" "The skill affecting the cloth you touched... was nullified."

For that instance, instead of physical contact with the ability user, Dazai extended his ability across an object to Chuuya. This made the object nullified against Rimbaud's ability, forming a shield of sorts to block his skill from attacking further.

The First Time it's Used On a Singularity - STORMBRINGER

NOTE: I own a copy of STORMBRINGER, but at the time of making this post, I was loaning it out to a friend. With that said, I used a translation that I have read previously. If you wish to locate it, go to bsd-bibliophile's Tumblr and search from there. I don't want to directly link it for obvious reasons.

Dazai's ability is seen twice in STORMBRINGER. The first instance is near the beginning of it, as written in the translation below.

(Dazai) casually grabbed Chuuya's arm and lifted it up. At that moment, the abnormal gravitational field that surrounded them immediately disappeared, along with the insufferable pain Chuuya had felt.

STORMBRINGER, [CODE ; 01]

Like before, we have yet another example of Dazai using direct skin-to-skin contact to nullify. However, in this instance, it is used to nullify a partial singularity, as Corruption has not been fully unleashed here. (At least, that is how I am interpreting it.)

Then, near the end of STORMBRINGER:

Chuuya limply drifted in the air for several seconds before the black wings on his back slowly lowered him. Dazai caught his body. The minute he touched his body, Dazai's ability nullification activated. The self-contradictory singularity energy that sustained him retracted in on itself as the singularity's power outlet decreased. He eventually returned to normal and his gate closed. The red marks plaguing Chuuya's body pulled away. The field of gravity disappeared and the stillness of night was restored.

STORMBRINGER, [CODE ; 04]

Yet again, nullification through direct skin contact. This instance doesn't provide an exact idea of where they touched, but it's reasonable to assume he touched Chuuya on his back or something.

This is the first time Dazai's ability has been used related to a singularity.

Singularity Time - DEAD APPLE Prologue

Dazai continues to use his ability to nullify Chuuya's singularity as seen in the prologue of DEAD APPLE. Though this is not shown in the light novel or in the movie, it can be seen in the manga, as shown here:

Other Instances Before Dazai Joins the ADA - The Heartless Cur and BSD Manga Chapter 12

The Heartless Cur is a short story provided in the sixth volume of the Bungou Stray Dogs Manga, which tells of how Akutagawa and Dazai first met. Akutagawa attempts to use his ability on Dazai as written below:

Akutagawa turned his own sleeve into a wide blade, and thrust it into the boy's neck without a shred of hesitation. "Not bad," Dazai said, quietly. Akutagawa was stunned. He was sure the boy should have died. However, Akutagawa's blade had vanished like mist right where it would have touched the boy's neck.

The Heartless Cur, Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #6

Then, a flashback is shown from when Dazai was mentoring Akutagawa. During that, Akutagawa attempts to use his ability against him.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #3, Chapter 12

As seen here, Dazai directly touches Rashoumon with his hand, nullifying the ability upon contact.

Dazai Gets Tested and Tests Others - Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam

Dazai gets to use his ability a whopping four times in this Light Novel, which can also be seen in the remarkably inaccurate two-episode Azure Apostle arc in the anime.

It's used twice on Kunikida in a short period of time, as shown below:

The bullet tears through the air until it hits (Dazai) right between the eyes.

I take the pistol I shot earlier and toss it at Dazai. He catches it, and almost instantly, it transforms back into a piece of notebook paper in his hands.

Since the bullets were also created using my skill, they were nullified and vaporized by Dazai's own skill on contact.

Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Page 130

Again, direct contact with Dazai's skin gets rid of the bullets, vaporizing them, while turning Kunikida's pistol back to its original state. This is interesting to me in how Dazai's ability impacts them differently. Because the bullets were created with the pistol, the bullets vanished. However, when Dazai touched the pistol, it reverted back to notebook paper with whatever Kunikida wrote on it.

This is also the second instance where Dazai touches an object and uses his ability on it.

Then, his ability is used twice on the numbers terrorist.

"Why...?! Why won't any numbers appear?! I can't accelerate, either! Why, why, why is this happening?!" "You should've done your homework. Skills don't work on me."

What I find interesting about this is that he isn't touching an object or the ability user here. I'm assuming that since it would require to impact Dazai's skin, that is where the nullification occurred. If the ability didn't show up on his skin, would it still have been nullified? We shall never know.

However, him nullifying the ability against himself does not nullify it against anyone else. This is further encouraged by the below:

Dazai's right fist connects with the young man's face, spinning him a full 180 degrees.

(Kunikida's POV) Then I look at my body to find that the numbers have vanished. Dazai must have defeated that skill user.

It appears that if Dazai wants to end an ability user's ability on everyone at that moment, he has to touch that ability user physically. So, to be clear, Dazai's skin can nullify the effect of an ability on himself. Dazai touching skin-to-skin with an active ability user nullifies the effect of their ability on everyone.

Examples We See in the Present - Bungou Stray Dogs Manga

Dazai uses his ability quite a few times at the beginning of the series, but it begins to be many more chapters between once we finish with the Guild Arc. It goes from less than twenty to twenty, then, fifty. The last time (as of posting this) that Dazai has used his ability was in Chapter 101. Make of that what you will.

ATSUSHI - Direct skin-to-skin contact. Atsushi returns to his original human form.

Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Rashoumon vanishes after cutting through Dazai's bandages to his neck.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #7, Chapter 25

Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Q's doll disintegrates, and the ability deactivates against Atsushi.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #7, Chapter 29

Skin-to-ability-infused-object contact. Q's doll disintegrates, and everyone affected by the ability is released from it.

Note: Touching those affected by the ability would not nullify its impact on them. He would actively have to touch the catalyst of the ability (the doll) or Q themself.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 30

Skin-to-skin contact. Because Steinbeck's vines are in the middle of being created and used by him, Dazai touching him on the neck nullifies them and causes them to disintegrate.

I explain this because there is an instance in the future where Dazai touches Steinbeck's vines and they don't disintegrate, which I will attempt to explain.

Skin-to-skin contact. Dazai nullifies Chuuya's Corruption.

We Will Now Take a Break From Our Scheduled Programming - DEAD APPLE

Dazai uses his ability three times during DEAD APPLE.

The moment his fingers touched the crystals, their hard gem-like surfaces cracked, and they melted away. Drip. Trails of light suddenly transformed into a liquid-like blood, swirling around and mixing together in the air. The two lights melted into one and spun until they formed a single sphere.

In this, he is touching Shibusawa's ability-infused objects. At least, that is how I'm interpreting it. It doesn't change the fact that the users behind them are dead, but it means they are no longer being contained.

Then, in a classic instance that I'm sure everyone will recognize:

The viscous liquid slid down Dazai's throat until eventually, long, slender fingers touched Chuuya's ghastly, corrupted face. When they made contact, it instantly nullified his skill.

Skin-to-skin.

The next instance, however, is considerably interesting to me.

"Get off me," he demanded, but Dazai kept him still. "Don't move." "The hell?" Chuuya grimaced as Dazai held his head down. While glancing around, Dazai admitted, "Looks like the fog hasn't completely cleared yet, and I'd rather not have to protect you from your skill right now."

By maintaining skin-to-skin contact with Chuuya, Dazai prevents Shibusawa's ability (the fog) from affecting Chuuya. Since Chuuya's ability is nullified, there is none to steal in that moment.

And Back to the Manga! - Bungou Stray Dogs Manga

This instance is not a very explicit one, but it is heavily implied that he is using his ability in this moment.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #12, Chapter 51

As per usual, skin-to-skin with Atsushi, and skin-to-ability-infused-object with Akutagawa (well, potential, as it's not active at that moment).

The next instance is in Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #22, Chapter 101. There's no specific panel or image of how exactly it works, because it's not tangible.

To be clear, Dazai nullifies the cat burglar's time control ability's effect on him. The reason for this is assuming that if it affects a certain amount of space (as stated, a few kilometers within her radius), it is technically tangible, and therefore can be viewed as touching everyone within that space. If it touches Dazai's skin, it won't impact him.

I had to think about this a lot more than I thought I would. Initially, I thought, 'it has no corporeal form or anything, it's not as if he's touching her... there's no rational explanation for why he can nullify it.' This thought was further encouraged by the fact that Fukuchi turned back time repeatedly, and Dazai couldn't have been not impacted by that.

Then, I realized that Asagiri specifically stated that there is a limited space in which her ability can take effect. By giving it a spatial limit, it is implied that it has to make some sort of barely visible contact to freeze everyone in time, as it doesn't do that for everyone else.

Asagiri, you clever son of a bitch. For fuck's sake.

These are all the instances where Dazai's ability has been successfully used. However, there are times where it fails to work. I want to explore those moments and explain why. Some are more self-explanatory than others.

He's Only Human - Dazai's Entrance Exam, BSD Manga, and 55 Minutes

There are six different points where Dazai's ability doesn't activate. I think it's important to look at them, because it shows exceptions to his ability.

The first instance is in Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam. You're going to laugh at me for putting this example in, but I feel it is necessary.

"Heh-heh. What surprised me the most was the fact that Ranpo's 'skill' isn't actually a skill at all." ...Huh? "Don't be ridiculous. As if someone without a skill could really do something like that." "That's what makes it so amazing! Listen to this. When Ranpo was thinking, I sneaked up behind him and pinched some of his hair."

Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam, Chapter 3, Pages 110-111

It goes without saying, but Dazai's ability can't impact an ability that doesn't exist. Ranpo's Super Deduction is imaginary, and thus, Dazai can't nullify it.

Next is a few instances in the manga.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #2, Chapter 7

Because Kyouka purposefully does not touch Dazai's skin, she could activate her ability, Demon Snow. Now, could it be said that theoretically, Dazai could've blocked this by extending his ability to his coat? Maybe. Considering previous examples, it's fair to say that if Dazai didn't want to get abducted here? He probably could've avoided it easily. Just some food for thought.

There's no visual of it in the manga, but I brought this up earlier. In Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 31, Dazai and Chuuya go to rescue Q. They are entrapped by Steinbeck's roots, and Dazai has to cut them out of it. Please keep in mind that when I say this, this is based off theory alone and no direct proof, panel, animation-wise or otherwise. I believe that when Dazai is cutting Q out of the roots, odds are, he probably brushes against them with his knife-holding hand a little. Since these roots were all created together, wouldn't it be reasonable to think that they would disintegrate under Dazai's touch? Which brings up another point: why wouldn't Dazai just touch the roots if that was the case? That would be far easier than cutting them all away, unless he's intentionally trying to annoy Chuuya (which is incredibly possible but time-consuming). This makes me think that Dazai's ability can stop ability-created objects if they are still actively being made or used by the ability user, but if they are no longer attached to the user (activity-wise) and were not created from an object (like Doppo Poet or Dogra Magra for example), they remain existing.

Anyways. Sorry about the rant. Back to actual examples.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #8, Chapter 31

As Dazai will clearly state himself after recovering from this, Lovecraft's tentacles are not an ability. If it's not related to an ability, he can do nothing against it.

Then, we have 55 Minutes, which introduces this fascinating tidbit:

(Wells) "Skills that nullify other skills will not activate if the user is dead. In other words, Dazai--or rather, his body--won't be nullifying any skills since his heart has stopped."

55 Minutes, Page 186

First, when Dazai's heart came to a stop, the blood supply to the brain would cease, and Dazai would die. When this happened, his skill would cease to exist, and other skills would start working on him again. Therefore, his wounds needed to be swiftly treated, and he'd need immediate resuscitation afterward--even the kind of resuscitation they perform at any ordinary hospital through electric stimulation. And if that worked, Dazai would going from being "dead" to being "on the brink of death." After that, Yosano could use her skill to completely heal his wounds. In other words, it should be possible to heal Dazai as long as he was on the brink of death.

55 Minutes, Page 186-187

Yeah, so if he's dead-ish? Abilities will work on him. Albeit, it's a very, very short time-frame, but it does in fact exist.

Bungou Stray Dogs Manga #21, Chapter 95

In this panel, Nikolai uses his ability, The Overcoat, on Dazai. This shows that yet again, as long as the ability does not touch him directly skin-to-skin, it will work as intended.

SUMMARY

Dazai's ability can be used against anyone or anything that he can touch. Examples being:

Ability users he is touching skin-to-skin with

Objects he is actively touching and willing his ability into

Abilities that are infused into external objects (ex: Rashoumon in Akutagawa's jacket, a gun created from a sheet of paper in Kunikida's notebook)

Abilities that would have direct contact with his skin (ex: the numbers skill from Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam)

Dazai's ability cannot affect:

Skill users he is not touching skin-to-skin (ex: Kyouka grabbing his jacket when abducting him so she can continue using Demon Snow)

Objects that are no longer actively a part of an ability (ex: Steinbeck's vines on Q) [ASSUMPTION]

Not abilities (Ranpo, Lovecraft)

Abilities he is not touching with his skin (ex: Nikolai's ability)

Abilities when his heart isn't beating/he's dead

Ok got OP's permission so today's essay is about Percico and the shipping culture again.

Before I jump into the Answer tho, please just remember that to dislike a ship is, in fact, absolutely normal and totally justified even when there's no reason at all. You don't need reasons to love and sure you don't need reason to feel repulsive at st. It's just feelings that every human has, so there's that.

On to the matter at hand. I'm doing this because I'm weirdly interested in how Percico (and other... less favorable ships) are perceived in this fandom, along with their influence. This is science (as much as I want it to be...) and I'm really trying to be subjective so please don't think I'm defending this or dissing any other ship bc srsly I'm too old for that. 😭

Anw. I don't have any outlive yet, so Imma borrow OP's tags instead.

Tl;dr: the (fictional) dynamic isn't healthy but sometimes it's what get people hooked.

Their unhealthy relationship.

This is actually very simple. When it comes to fiction, your consumption doesn't necessarily always have to be healthy. Of course, it also depends largely on people's tastes, which is also another way of saying that a number of people feel completely fine, and/or are interested in unhealthy dynamics in unrealistic scenarios.

This has been an ongoing discourse among the fandoms for a long time. I suppose it makes sense that someone who's used to healthy, humane, tame content would consider more problematic dynamics absurd. However, sometimes people do find intriguing, fascinating facets in the forbidden, toxic situations. It's the curiosity rather than a need for positivity (and even less of moral) that propels us to indulge in the unethical, specifically (and allowed only) in fiction, those that we probably would run away from at first sight in real life. (And it's because it's fiction, so it does no harm! 🤗)

In fact, the complicated relationship and messed-up history between Nico and Percy is the exact reason why I find them compelling. I like the angst, the unhealthiness of it all, the unique taste that sets them apart from other exemplary relationships in the series.

It's a type of catharsis, I believe. Sometimes you'd like a little tension here and there, just for the thrill of it.

The age-gap.

I actually am in no position to talk about this because ngl, I reckon my comprehension of age in fiction is different from others. You ask another Percico shipper then chances are they would tell you that Nico's age is messed up; Frazel's or Caleo's age gap is actually somewhat the same, with which the canon is fine; 3 years might not be that big of a problem.

I, myself, just straight-up don't care. I have seen worse in other types of fictional content and tbh I see no problem. But yeah this can be a trigger to others, I understand.

Percy's attitude towards Nico.

This should also be grouped into their dynamics in general, yeah? I do admit Percy and Nico don't have the best relationship (friendship-wise or whatever) in canon. However, it's just like I have explained above - sometimes one doesn't see it as a problem, other times it's the exact reason why one engages with it in the first place. It's all about preferences. You find their canon materials an obstacle, another would find it an inspiration.

Hell, Wuthering Heights is so messed up in terms of character relationship chart but that doesn't stop it from becoming a classic piece of literature, which the readers enjoy just fine.

Or another example: the villain x hero trope that has somehow wormed its way into many fandoms at once. Clearly, they don't have the best interactions in terms of intimacy, or even affability, for that matter. And yet, it persists despite the abundant hostility.

On the other hand? The canon doesn't always dictate everything. The official materials are the roots of inspiration, regardless, what's born from it isn't in the hands of the author but rather those of the audience (aka: fans, shippers. etc...). (Well unless you forbid transformative works altogether, but I digress lol). Anw, I'm talking fanfics, or fan content in general, whose Percies and Nicos might or might not be the same as you've come to know, and the story is completely a world away from the canon events.

There, Nico might not never have deceived Percy, Percy might never have strangled Nico, they could have talked it out, Bianca never died, they could just be regular high schoolers, they could be friends and then many more. Nico got his happy ending, and everyone's as happy as a childhood dream.

Believe it or not, Percico has one of the sweetest, most wholesome and most beautiful Domestic Family Fic I have ever read in PJO AO3. In it, Nico deserves better and he does get it, as the writer successfully constructed a scenario in which happiness is possible in their union.

Surely it wouldn't make it to the official materials. But again, it doesn't need to. And that is the point. Sometimes, one finds joy in the peculiarity, and it's the drought that makes the rain so precious.

Looking at it in a different way - it might be the compassion for Nico that gets us into Percico in the first place.

Think of it this way - Nico's crush on Percy brought him many struggles, yet it was also shown, through many sacrifices made and a painful confession, that it meant a lot to Nico; hence, as a fan's act of adoration for Nico himself, one wishes for another ending in which he could achieve that love. So they come up with many scenarios, twists, and turns in which the crush comes to fruition. And naturally, it grows into what we call "shipping."

It's just as simple as that.

That's everything I got to say I think. It should be clear that I cannot speak for the Percico nation since I'm not as ominiscient as I'd like to be lmao. Tho I hope this does give, if anything, some insight into another corner of the shipping community. 🥺🤗

I don’t exactly agree with you here.

On the one hand, I absolutely get where they’re all coming from. I really dislike it when people mischaracterize characters that I like really seriously in a deeply canon-integrated way. I’m autistic, and it makes me kinda unable to enjoy my special interests casually, to the point where I end up practically memorizing every line my faves have. And I often find it irritating when people act like these characters are completely different in personality/backstory/etc., while they act like that interpretation is canon (or say that hc ships are canon when it comes to my f/os). I’m allowed to feel that way. I’m not harassing people on the internet over their interpretations. I just block people who make content that I don’t like.

Most of the comments are fine, too, imo. Talking about disliking mischaracterization is fine, unless you’re going up to other people and screaming in their faces about their characterization. Comments complaining about things like LGBTQ+ headcanons are not good, and you can tell that some comments are children who aren’t really 100% sure how fandom works yet (and who don’t quite understand things like headcanons as opposed to canon), but in general, what I see is people talking about things that irritate them when it comes to media literacy and the understanding of characters.

On the other hand, sometimes woobifying characters and making them poor widdle uwu babies can be fun 👍. Most of the time that I do stuff like that, it’s jokingly, but like I truly do not gaf if someone wants to make the dad from Chicken Little their SZA Big Boy kind and wholesome malewife. Oh, absolutely - especially if a female Joker was one of the girls Kamoshida decided to take a 'special interest' in - because then you wouldn't just be seeing glimpses of it or hearing about it, you as the player would be experiencing it firsthand yourself - which would probably be much more unsettling and uncomfortable. Also I imagine they'd probably change up the consequences - like rather than Joker being expelled if they don't finish the first Palace in a certain number of days, the punishment for failing the deadline could be something far worse and with even darker implications.

I really love the idea of a Fakeman who genuinely believes he's the real deal, with false memories inserted into his mind to make him easier to control than the real Rayman was. Maybe something in his brain is.... disconnected? He doesn't remember the thing with Red. They left that part out.

He genuinely believes he's the good guy just like Ramon used to believe. That he's doing the right thing and that his work is actually helping people.

Then learning from Ramon and/or Bullfrog that he is in fact nothing more than a clone and a puppet for the higher ups.

Maybe he has a similar reaction that Ramon did, or maybe he just straight up denies everything. He doesn't believe it. He can't believe it, not when it would completely destroy his sense of self.

omg happy early birthday! in recent times its harder to find a 3ds for cheap, i got mine pre-modded on ebay and its worth it if you dont have access to anything to mod your 3ds. the model is the new 3ds xl and i think thats the one most people tend to get, the new 2ds xl tend to be cheaper also. ebay, mercari, and etsy are probably the best if you want a modded 3ds. on mercari you could probably find a 3ds for decent price.

hi! of course i don’t mind. :) to be honest, the way i fix clipping issues with poses i didn’t make myself is by editing the pose that’s giving me problems. i avoid 99% of clipping by ripping my sims rigs with the outfit they’ll be wearing, extracting the pose i need and fixing it to make sure it looks okay! before doing this i just lived with clipping issues and took my L lmao. so i’m not highly experienced in editing clipping. but i know not everyone has done pose making so i suggest using the clone stamp tool + liquify tool. the tutorials i linked explain each tool thoroughly but! basically clone stamp can help you kinda “paint” the area you need to fix by copying/pasting what you select and liquify will help you move/modify the area. with these combined it’ll definitely make the problem less of an eyesore with trial and error! i still need to use this method in certain areas because well, it’s the sims and clipping will sometimes always be unavoidable! i hope this was somewhat helpful <3

Omg. THIS. And forgive me for adding my own thoughts on, but the brain bullets are firing.

The sandwich of the day deal starts getting more traction to a surprising degree. You've briefly mentioned your hole in the wall diamond in the rough sandwich shop to your coworkers, but none of them seemed really interested. So why in the world do more and more people keep showing up for sandwiches? Why in the world do you get there and have to wait in a line that gets longer by the day, to the point that it makes you late to work some days?

And you can't be upset. No. You're happy for them, really. It's been great to get to try the different sandwiches of the day. To slowly watch them expand a kids menu with peanut butter and jellies, and grilled cheeses. It's been wonderful to see them expand and add nut free options, gluten free options, and have a different sandwich for breakfast and the rest of the day. You're so happy for them.

But it kind of feels like you've lost your hidden gem. You don't have any time to strike up friendly small talk with the man in the boonies hat, or engage in playful banter with the pretty waiter. It's hard running a business, and their either always busy or never around. and you always leave a tip when you can, and you always use your punch card (Which you notice always has noticeably more skulls on it than the regular customers' new punch cards with sandwiches on them) but it just doesn't feel the same.

But, the sandwiches are still always good, so it's worth planning a little extra time into your morning commute to stand in line. Especially since the grumpy chef and the pretty waiter always at least recognize you and offer you a nod. Besides, five quid for a good sandwich is practically criminal with how good of a deal it is. Who cares if they close once every couple of months and get a new name? Copyright is hard, you imagine, and it's not your place to dictate how they run their business.

But sometimes good things just can't last. Not expecting the line to be longer and longer every day, you never plan to be five minutes late to work, or ten, or an hour. And that adds up. Even if you always stay late to make it up. Sometimes it's not enough. Sometimes, you just get fired. And it sucks.

So what can you do? Sure, you could suck it up, go home, and start looking for another job. And you probably will. But going to your favorite sandwich shop and eating your feelings just before close sounds like a much better idea right now.

When you come in. They can already tell that something is off. You've been coming to their shop consecutively for nearly three years now, so they know you. Of course, Price had a background check run on you that first time you came in genuinely for a sandwich to make sure that you weren't a rookie from a rival mob trying to scout out the competition.

You don't look like when you're tired or when you've had to stay late at work this time, and for a second, Soap asks Price if it's about time to redeem all of their favorite customers accrewed skulls. After all, loyalty is something they value as a mob, and even if you just get the sandwiches and have no clue about their front, loyalty is loyalty. You're the reason their front is thriving after all, and you have no clue how much less shady you've made their front by somehow turning it into a real sandwich shop. But Price tells Soap to hold steady and bide his time. After all, they don't even know what has you down yet.

Price decides to send Gaz in, ever the friendly smooth-talker. But no one expects gruff and quiet Simon to bring you a sandwich before you've even ordered and plop down in the booth across from you. He doesn't say anything, just sets the plate down and offers you a nod. It wasn't even the sandwich of the day or from the constant menu. It was a sandwich that Simon noticed made your smile just a bit wider every time it was made. A "comfort food" if you will.

Price, Soap, and Gaz all stand by the slightly ajar kitchen door, listening as you absolutely break down to the gruff giant. They all listen as you vent about losing your job for being late so many times, no matter how often you stay late or how hard you worked. How you're out of a job for now, and you were just going to eat your feelings at your favorite sandwich place.

Normally, you wouldn't break down like that to a practical stranger. But this just felt different. It felt easier with the men that you had seen nearly every day for three years. With the sandwich shop that had almost outlasted your stable job at this point.

And while Simon doesn't really know what to offer you other than an awkward pat on the back and a rough sounding "M' sorry, love." He certainly didn't accept any payment for your sandwich, with the pretty waiter poking his head out to insist that it was on the house. Little could you see, Price had him by the back of the shirt collar, keeping him from walking straight out with his pistol in hand. They can't afford to handle this like greenhorns, after all.

You didn't expect what came in your mailbox within the next week. At first, you had thought it was just a fast food coupon flyer like they send out occasionally. What you didn't expect to see was that your favorite sandwich shop was hiring.

The mob side of business had been absolutely thriving with the use of a proper front to operate under. They've been hitting more commissions and requests than ever, so they can afford to hire someone to take orders and run the register while they make the real money. They'll just have to watch their tongues a bit more. No trouble, right?

i love the mob front au you've been doing lately. just the mental image of going in and ordering for the first time to a very surprised and borderline bewildered gaz, who passes on your request to ghost, who eyes you up and down and finally acquiesces with a sigh and a 'yeah olright'. of coming back the next week and seeing a bearded man holding court in the corner booth and simon gruffly hands you a wrapped sandwich (that you didn't even order yet) and informing you that it's 'to-go, so beat it' when you'd originally planned on sitting and eating it there (he didn't even remember to charge you this time... dope!). of passing by the dumpster outside and not noticing all the red liquid splattered against it. of the sandwich shop closing suddenly and re-opening two weeks later with a new name and absolutely nothing else having changed. of getting a funny look from the cook when you leave a tip. mwah! perfect! -391780

The first time you go in to the restaurant you're met with incredibly bewildered looks from the three men in the corner booth and the one large man who's standing over them. You assume the big guy is the waiter? But then the pretty one scurries over as you're taking a seat and when you ask for a menu he looks even more confused. Then the big guy comes over and stares down at you over the pretty one's shoulder and grunts out something about a sandwich, so you order a sandwich. It takes a while and you're pretty sure you see the big guy walking back to the shop with groceries, but it's a good fucking sandwich so you don't really care. Plus you're starving and the big guy grunts out a "Five" when you ask how much it is, so you don't ask questions.

The next time you wander in, you're pretty sure it's closed but you can hear noise coming from somewhere, and the bell over the door rang so someone must hear something. A minute later the big guy (who you assume is the cook) is leaning to look out the kitchen pass through, and glaring at you. He tells you it's five for a sandwich and when you ask what kind he goes, "You want the sandwich or not?" You get it to go, he doesn't have change for your tenner so he gives it to you for free. You're a little worried you just took this guy's lunch, but you're not in the business of asking questions. You take the paper wrapped sandwich and head back to work.

The cook yells at some guy with a mohawk to take your order. You tell him you want the sandwich of the day and hand him your punch card. He flips open a pocket knife and exes out one of the little skulls. You feel moderately violated for your punch card. The next time you come in the cook takes your order and swears when he sees the cut x in your card. He pulls out a phone and starts yelling at someone on the other end. You turn up your music and hand him a fiver in exchange for your card back. He gives you an extra serving of chips on the side.

The shop closes suddenly and you're more upset than you should be considering it was a front for the mob. You grab lunch from your second favorite(legitimately run) shop for the next two weeks. Another shop opens in the place your previous favorite was. It's exactly the same shop with exactly the same grumpy looking cook in the pass through window. You are given the same bewildered looks when you open the door that you got the first time you came in, except this time the guy in the boonie hat laughs when he sees you. The only difference is the chalkboard beside the serving window which has "sandwich of the day 5 quid" written on it in bold letters. It does not tell you what the sandwich is. You order it to go.

He likes parallel play, or being alone together with you. He works on his own projects, like grading papers or writing a new thesis while you’re doing your own thing, like playing video games or reading. He has a spare desk and chair for you in his office. You can choose to do work or entertain yourself there when you visit him and he’s still teaching a lecture, but feel free to take a nap on the plush sofa he bought just for you. 

He will nag you about your health but in an annoyingly endearing way. He fusses over you, telling you about appropriate attire for today’s weather, offering you an umbrella, and reminding you to drink water.

He likes it a lot when you trace his skin through the spade-shaped hole in his outfit.

He hates the feeling of being vulnerable, but he likes being around you. This creates conflicting emotions inside of him. Oftentimes, he doesn’t know how to deal with it and just lurks by you. Pull him into a hug to quiet the voices in his head. 

He will send you packages or luxury items from the planets he’s visiting. You’ll be greeting a disgruntled Topaz or IPC soldiers at your door as they hand you various gifts ranging from limited-edition jewelry to flowers that bloom only once every 200 amber eras. He’s a big spender on you. If you’re unused to the amount of money he’s willing to throw at you, he’s going to give you a lot of “exposure therapy” with his generosity. He’ll start filling your wardrobe with tailor-made clothes with the excuse that you should match his outfits when you attend formal events together, but his clothing contributions eventually infiltrate your closet pretty deeply. 

He enjoys being pampered and pampering you. Self-care nights are a must - as a representative of the IPC and one of the ten Stonehearts, he has to keep himself presentable and looking sharp, and that goes for his partner too! He’s more than happy to spend money to fund your trips to the salon or buy you any beauty products to use at home. He’d love to put on face masks together and share a drink or two with you.

If you want to, and Elio’s script permits, he will bring you along on missions to safer planets. He’ll drop you off at a commercial district - feel free to go shopping or try out some novelty food while he wraps up his Stellaron Hunter business.

He likes getting his hair brushed. One of his favorite activities is sitting down and letting you comb through his hair after he cleans up from a mission. It’s an activity that leaves him vulnerable, but he doesn’t mind if it’s with you.

He’s an acts of service kind of guy. He moves to take your bags before you even say anything, holds open doors, and pulls out chairs for you. Brings you a cup of water and some fruit when you’ve been working for too long, and silently drapes his jacket over you when you shiver.

Tell him you like a certain pastry and he’ll show up every day and bring some. Show him a picture of a pretty flower and he’s boarding a spaceship to bring the flower to you personally. If you want something, he’ll do his best to get it.

He’s pretty quiet, but he’ll remember everything you say, what your preferences are, and what you like. He secretly writes it down in case his memory gets murky, and he’ll often reread his notes to remind himself.

He gives simple but traditional gifts to you, such as jade bracelets and pendants, and combs and hairpins if you have longer hair to wear or use them.*

He’ll treasure anything you gift to him. If you make an accessory for him, he wears it at all times. If your gift is small enough, he’ll stow it safely in his pockets and take it everywhere with him.
