Dandelion News - December 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $kaybarr1735 or check out my Dandelion Doodles for 50% off this month!
1. Rooftop Solar Keeps Getting More Accessible Across Incomes
“The long-term trend is that the median income for a household with rooftop solar is getting closer almost every year to that of the median income for owner-occupied households.”
2. Endangered seabirds return to Pacific island after century-long absence
“"No native species were harmed during the removal of invasive rats from Kamaka Island,” Esposito said. […] The team also collected and planted native sedges and grasses while removing invasive trees to enhance nesting conditions.”
3. First-of-its-kind crew welfare measure adopted at Pacific fisheries summit
“The new measure establishes minimum standards on board, including access to clean food and water, medical care, and sleeping quarters. It stipulates that workers have “unfettered access” to their identity documents […] and “unmonitored access to communication devices to seek assistance.””
4. Greyhound racing is increasingly rare worldwide. New Zealand now plans to outlaw the practice
“New Zealand’s government rushed through a law to prevent dogs from being killed while the industry winds down, unless a veterinarian deems it unavoidable. This will prevent owners from euthanizing dogs for economic reasons, Peters said.”
5. Possible Win-Win for Wildlife Management and Food Security
“Wild-harvested meat donation programs can help improve food insecurity while also helping manage overabundance of wildlife species like white-tailed deer[…. In one program,] hunters donated 600,000 meals. But that’s only 5.7% of the amount of venison that food donation facilities could use, according to the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The researchers say this suggests there’s room for scaling up these programs.”
6. Poll of American Farmers Shows Strong, Widespread Support for Increased Farm Bill Conservation Funding
“The polling, which surveyed over 500 farmers and ranchers across the country, found broad support for continuing and increasing funding for climate-smart agriculture conservation programs.”
7. Long-distance friendships enhance trust in conservation efforts
“Relative to a person with no long-distance friends, having even just one friend in another village led to a 15% increase in conservation activities such as beach cleanups, reporting illegal fishing practices and educating others about sustainable resource management.”
8. Two major Sunshine State airports make switch to 100 pct renewables
“Power for operations ranging from lighting and air conditioning to escalators and charging stations will be provided from renewable energy projects [...] at the beginning of 2025, ensuring clean energy operations for the more than 8 million passenger journeys averaged each year.”
9. Expansion of federally subsidized public housing may offer a path out of LA's homelessness crisis
“[… A] half-cent sales tax [was] recently approved by L.A. County voters expected to generate $1 billion per year to address homelessness. […] “Metros with higher concentrations of federally financed public housing tend to have lower rates of unsheltered homelessness," Schachner said.”
10. $20 Million Available to Advance Habitat Restoration Priorities of Tribes and Underserved Communities
“Through this funding, NOAA will help support community-driven habitat restoration and build the capacity of tribes and underserved communities to more fully participate in restoration activities.”

Saoirse had every intention of going to the doctor for a check up today to figure out what this mysterious illness could be, but after sleeping through nearly the entire day only waking up to puke, she was reminded of the last time she had these symptoms and decided to take a pregnancy test, just to rule that out. After learning of her low fertility paired with the fact that she was only able to conceive Morning with the help of treatments, Saoirse never would have dreamt of conceiving on her own. Yet, the test was positive. Actually, all four she took were. After the initial shock settled and was replaced with pure excitement, Saoirse ran downstairs to find Cillian in the garden to share the big news. Confused as to what could have his sick wife in such a good mood, Cillian set down his tools and got up to meet her, and when she handed him the positive test he could not believe it. He stared at it in complete disbelief for a moment while she explained that there’s three more positive tests sitting upstairs. He pulled her into the tightest hug and began crying over how happy he is that they’re finally welcoming another member to the family, and that Morning finally gets to be a big sister. Both Saoirse and Cillian had always planned on trying for another baby once the dust settles at the new restaurant, so the timing is just a little overwhelming, but they wouldn’t change a single thing.

So, I was chatting with my friend today, and we are curious, what would draw young people (20-40 years) to join their local all-breed clubs? Or to volunteer?
I get that time is the primary restriction (I get it... LOL), but what incentives are there? Do we just hand out applications? Cards with codes to club websites? ...
Anyway, would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
#im thinking of applying to join this club but four annual dues is kind of a lot on my income.#i looove this club because they understand the importance of showing the public what the world of purebred dogs is like#the event today was adjacent to a farmers market in a downtown park#lots of hustle and bustle and super curious public#but knowing how thin the organisers are spread and how tiny the club is disheartens me! i try so hard to get young people around me#to get involved#but so many are just totally apathetic. its sad. like we dont GET shows unless we have people to run them#we dont HAVE events unless we HAVE clubs to organise them#and so on and so fortb#*forth

I love how my unintentional excuse as to why Alestair and Idan never have to go to work is because they ran away and basically quit without notice.
#this has always been a part of the story though as the first ever thing I wrote with Alestair involved what happened#but Idan stops working there because of that#Mara's job pays a LOT and is hire based so she can do whatever#Vilissa is like the only character that has to regularly work LMAO#but also Vi wouldn't let Alestair get a job when they were dating#as for Fae she's a sex worker so she does it whenever#Fritz and Jer are employed but they don't even get heavily involved in helping until Love and that is explained away (thanks Vi)#as for other stoires#the children in Sunshine are too young to work#the parents do work and leave regularly but aren't really heavily involved#and the adults just take care of themselves with the stuff they have or work if they want (like Norie)#there is no currently running school in the castle (but there used to be)#Barle is a con artist so he would sell junk he fixed up but after getting kidnapped by Shika he doesn't really worry about that anymore#Shika and Fria have disposable income as they are just looking for Barle (Shika the princess and Fria a royal bodyguard)#and Charlie is a bounty hunter so he has freelance (and later a courier)#Flick and Millie are child and Nick is jobless and he's a bird currently so he just needs to eat a little#Ebers is a fortune teller so she does that whenever#also since Millie doesn't care about school she skips out after Flick shows up#And Flick is basically kidnapped so she doesn't got to school as she can't even go there#Seth is homeless and gets things out of making deals with others which he sometimes sell expensive items to get money#Lia and Giles leave behind their lives to adventure but were previously self employed (small businesses)#Myrtle is a Princess so she has that responsibility and disposable income#Sylas is a hunter but there isn't really any work to be done if most of the kingdom is under a sleeping spell#Nym uses the stuff that Elysa left behind in death but he was a Farmer back home not that he can get back home#Pokey runs the train station and the venue but he also isn't getting a lot of business from the inner kingdom#that's just the main stories lolll#every story has some kinda excuse about not working while the story happens

Or a lot of Australian actors farmers in their spare time? Genuine question because i cant tell if it's common
A lot of older Australian actors (and older Australians in general, actually) I know have hobby farms, yes, but I'd say that that's very different from Sam as his family's farm is a (generationally passed-down, from the sounds of it) cattle station and his parents' livelihood.
There is very much a cultural expectation with farmers that I know here that children help out on it during busy periods regardless of their chosen profession. Sam touched on his experiences in animal husbandry in that interview an anon sent me yesterday, but he's talked a bit in press here too about going home for the calving seasons, which I would say would probably be expected by his family given other cattle families that I know.
But yeah, Sam's circumstances are pretty unique, I'd say, given I don't think there are all that many actors who come from actual farming families in Australia.
#at the theatre company i work at we have 9 office staff and 3 of them have family hobby farms for instance#and actually one of them is the daughter of a tv actor who was big here in the 90s#and he's semi-retired to said hobby farm#like the idea of a hobby farm is that it's not really a major source of income (or any source of income sometimes a lot of people are just#using them to grow their own produce and keep a few sheep)#sam's family are career farmers so its pretty different#there IS usually an expectation that the farm would be handed down to the children though#but usually eldest son so sam's probably off the hook for most of it lol#my aunt and uncle live in a cottage on a cattle station up north and they're watching these huge dramas with the fam at the moment because#none of the kids want to take over and the dad refuses to sell#it's messy#sam asks

The irony of Farmer Boy is that there’s a whole romanticization of farming as the best and purest and most independent way of making a living, but (a) clearly the farmers are not in fact making everything themselves and sometimes need tradesmen and (b) Almanzo is able to obtain his greatest wish (a colt of his own) only because his father is pleased that he’s more interested in farming than in a legitimate offer to be a wheelwright’s apprentice. So he’s able to use the existence of tradesmen as leverage.
#the other irony is that Laura and Almanzo never truly made it as farmers#I mean they were doing okay in Missouri but their income was supplemented in order ways#and it was the books that gave them anything like prosperity#and rose was not interested in farming beyond rhetoric#and the Ingalls family definitely never got off the ground with farming

a wild flavor of tumblr user is a certain kind of white American self id’d leftist or commie who reblogs and posts things about I just think all liberals and centrists should DIE (*guillotine* meme) and then posts things needing to be nicer to demographics that vote 80% Republican and are very systemically involved in the structural and practical oppression of people of color and the whole US hegemony like brooo I get having a seriously messy relationship with your own cultural background but who are you talking about? Guillotining everyone at mawmaw’s thanksgiving?
#My mom was bitter about white middle American farmers and like it made me kind of …..#but also they do fucking vote 70-80% Republican and horrifically abuse the millions of undocumented laborers who run the system#But I see this kind of thing with a lot of white working class American groups#It’s not an argument against empathy we any group we all need more empathy#It’s that a) I think white Americans who got into leftism by themselves often end up#In this violence-centric ideas of reform that are still intensely conservative and culturally Christian#Like bro you just want to kill everyone to make a better shiny world of good people bro#And b) they have exceedingly little empathy with why people from any other background might have family or complex relationships#To conservative ideology#The white leftist culturally xtian relationship to many diasporic groups etc#Idk it’s interesting……#Also like I’m not letting anyone off the hook but uh some of the language that gets pulled up in these talks#Can be a weird reflection of Fox News rhetoric#The Real WorkinG Class (from predominantly white and rural areas)#Versus the Coastal *Liberals* and *urban people* at fault for income inequality#Or the death of American working class leftism or something#Like blaming that specifically on California and New York and or some of the areas with the highest proportions of people of color and Jews#It’s just like hmmmmm sussssss to me

Do not be fooled by how I talk about Frieza btw bc man I love knowing that what I'm doing is detrimental to the character's relationship with the plot and other characters.
#like loooook at me i know making frieza and cooler actually compete for the leading position instead of frieza being Handed it#is not fun for everyone. the whole point is that they never had to work for anyone meanwhile goku is a farmer boy whos earned his power#(aside from a couple transformations but we'll get to them later)#but its fun for ME !!!!! ok!!!!!!!!!!! cherieza is about frieza having someone they care about finally. thats the point !!!!!#its not canon frieza anymore. im a hypocrite i have clear favoritism about what i like or dont like being messed with#you can make frieza a sad pathetic struggling wet napkin all you want as long as theyre not masculine and buff doing it#📡 incoming transmission 📡#also true for how i portray cell and violas relationship btw bc i think cell should get a humbling punch in the guts for dying like that#so theyre more Demure when viola arrives#sorry. i took a ritalin im going insane thinking thoughts

Every time I see those videos about southerners believing in climate change without fail there is an out pour of comments like “oh I didn’t expect that from that accent” or “you found the only good southerner” “their appearance doesn’t say that” maybe improve yourself as a person and talk to more ppl than your close minded friend group. Genuinely. Y’all preach of inclusivity, diversity, and against classism and then behave like this. It’s embarrassing. Grow. Perhaps.
#the amount of rural and low income individuals that depend on the land in the south is large#farmers also are nervous considering they make a LIVING off of the land#and the climate heavily effects that#oyster/fisherman are already seeing the effects#grow the fuck up#you’re not better because you happened to be born in a different part of America#personal rant#Hawkzeyes#people are scared world wide about this#not just the northern fucking states of America

If Trump wins, and I hope to G-d he does not, the only possible way to keep him from enacting all the shitty things he wants to do is to have congress stop him (hypothetically the supreme court could, but this particular supreme court won't). We've seen a Republican congress shut down Democratic presidents - heck, look at the stuff Republicans refused to pass this year alone. A Democratic congress could help mitigate a Trump administration, and help a Harris(?) administration, y'know, actually do stuff.
And as for down ballot races - Minnesota had a blue state senate by the slimmest of margins last year (34 to 33) and they managed to pass laws providing paid family leave, free breakfast and lunch to ALL K-12 students, protections for women's health care, protections for trans healthcare, requiring employers to give paid sick leave, and so much more. If you don't care about the president, you should still vote locally, as it can have a HUGE impact on your own quality of life.
even if you're resigned that trump is going to win, 1/3 of the country lives in states with competitive senate elections. if democrats win the senate, there is very little that trump can do (can't even appoint supreme court nominees)
the following states all have competitive senate elections:
arizona
florida
maryland
michigan
montana
nevada
ohio
pennsylvania
texas
wisconsin
even if you don't think your state is competitive at all, THESE SENATE RACES STILL ARE, SO IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THESE STATES, MAKE SURE TO VOTE
and even if you don't live in one of those states, you could live in a competitive house seat. if democrats win the house, then trump can't pass any bills
and even if you don't live in a competitive state or district, your local elections matter even more than federal ones because they have a much more direct impact on your life
so VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE
#we banned conversion therapy#and made college free to kids with household incomes less than 80k#and passed bills that are trying to address climate change#I went to the state fair last year and the DFL's booth was basically just a big display that said 'look what we did this year alone'#and there was a place to vote for your favorite#DFL because in Minnesota the Democrats are actually an alliance between the Democrat Farmer and Labor parties#if anyone needs an explainer about federal checks and balances ask me and I will write one up#I'm not an expert but I apparently understand it better than a lot of people on this cursed website
