Kontextmaschine is Dead

Noted blogger @kontextmaschine is presumed dead, following the discovery that the sole resident at his most likely residence was found deceased during a wellness check initiated by concerned Redditors.

Prior to his last post on Aug 22, which indicated a serious health problem, he reported taking over twice the dose of creatine he had been taking at the beginning of his lengthy post-COVID health saga, in which he also reported becoming bisexual, having "zero" anxiety, gaining 3D vision after years of not having it, becoming incredibly convincing, and having to learn to walk and use his muscles properly again. At the time, he felt he was becoming trimmer and physically stronger, and reported engaging in a long project of yard work, although photos from the inside of his house generally looked somewhat messy.

A Tumblr user who met him briefly in person after the beginning of the health saga but before these most recent events reported that he was friendly, charismatic, hospitable, and clean, but "physically, a mess," with motor control issues on one side of his body.

Topics of discussion were similar to the content of kontextmaschine's blog, such as differences in east and west coast government in America, said to be "totally on brand," but it was said that the prolific poster seemed "less self-grandiose" in person.

Redditors theorize that the decline of kontextmaschine's health following his first self-report of COVID-19 infection may have been due to undiagnosed brain cancer, which could be more consistent with observed changes in behavior than the after-effects of a viral infection, given that most reports of "long covid" are about effects like fatigue, and not total loss of anxiety or alteration of sexual orientation.

Despite multiple suggestions, from both anonymous and pseudonymous users, kontextmaschine refused to seek professional medical care for his condition.

Regarding the mourning of public figures, in 2018, a period of increased Progressive sensitivity during the Trump Administration, kontextmaschine wrote,

Given his writing, it is likely that kontextmaschine would not have supported excessive public mourning over his death, though in 2017, following the theft of his motorcycle, when the popular blogger @argumate jokingly criticized him by writing, "no references to pinball, no insight into historical Americana, this isn’t the kontext I signed up for," kontextmaschine wrote,

Like argumate, perhaps the most famous of the rationalist-adjacent bloggers on Tumblr, screenshots of kontextmaschine's Tumblr posts would end up on outside websites.

Kontextmaschine was generally considered an interesting, if controversial writer. One Tumblr user characterized him as a member of the "obnoxious Tumblr right," though another user asked, "wait, how is kontextmaschine is right wing?" After another user claimed that the nuclear bombing of Oregon would be a net improvement in the world due to kontextmaschine's residence in Portland, tumblr user @random-thought-depository wrote a 2,400 word theory post arguing that kontextmaschine's philosophy was a means to coordinate to join a future political coalition favoring the formation of a more brutal and oppressive hierarchy in pursuit of his own advantage.

Though kontextmaschine's ideology advocates that humanity should adopt "r-selection," meaning more offspring with less investment in each (or youth, sex, and death), this blog dissented against the coalition theory, arguing that motorcycles, kung fu, women, Hollywood, and not having to report to HR are all traditionally cool, and the causality of the kontextmaschine ideology could easily run the other way.

Though he had a period of identifying as female in his youth, appropriately LGBTQ for a Tumblr user, his 2011 statement of principles, including "the lesser yields to the greater" and "suffering is the mark of a wrong person," and general body of work, could be described as a strain of right-wing thought, though not of the traditionalist Christian or rational technocratic varieties.

Prior to the post-covid health saga, kontextmaschine's health posting was primarily about his bipolar disorder, with both manic and depressive phases.

Kontextmaschine maintained generally friendly relations with other bloggers in his sphere of discourse, sometimes debating but rarely aggressive, except in response to anonymous hatemail. In response to one particular piece of hatemail, kontextmaschine stated that as a writer, of course his primary form of influence would be his posts.

In a post chain reblogged by dozens of Tumblr users, multiple Tumblr users wrote that they enjoyed his writing and are disappointed by his death, describing him as a unique thinker that will not be easily replaced. Several felt that there was not much they could have done, as after returning from his covid infection, he was not taking medical advice.

One Tumblr user wrote, "rip. Inspirational manic poster," while long-time and prolific poster argumate described him as, "one of the bloggers of all time."

Internet users speculate that Kontextmaschine is survived by his outdoor cat, Badger, about whom he posted frequently. He may also be survived by other members of his family, with whom he apparently did not live, and rarely spoke about.

It is recommended that enthusiasts of kontextmaschine's blog make backups of his writing for archival purposes.

with Dick, it's mostly about beauty, skincare and hair. they tell each other which make up brand is better, which eyeshadow color and eyeliner technique matches the other's eyes, which face mask gives the best nutrients on their faces, which hair mask suits their hair color. they even do each other's make up and nails when they're both free. Dick asks her if they are any new skincare products that are released from this brand that they both like. Dick keeps thanking Steph for that perfume she suggested that Wally loves on him.

with Jason, it's about food. Steph isn't much of a chef herself, let's leave that all to Jason, but she's the person he usually asks to try when he tries a new recipe. maybe it's because they're usually the ones who eats after patrol together while the rest of the family choose to rest and go home. or it's because it's Steph who usually suggests to the family about the snacks they're going to have during movie nights. or the restaurant they should try for the weekend. they sit on the rooftops while eating Big Belly Burgers as they talk about the food that's famous in Italy or Greece.

with Tim, it's about boybands and concerts. i mean, Tim has crushes on boybands and Steph is the same, so they're the perfect combination. Tim goes to her to fangirl about a new boyband song and they argue which member is the best singer or the hottest, if you ask Tim. Tim, being a nepo baby, gets VIP tickets and it's Steph who he invites to when attending concerts. they wear neon colors and have posters, and lose their voices by the end of each concert.

with Duke, it's about bike rides. yes, the rest of the family knows motorcycle rides, but Duke has created a special bond with Steph with it. it all started during morning patrol, The Signal passed by Steph's university and she knew, he needed help. so she hurriedly used this Halloween mask to conceal her face and use one of her professor's bikes just to help Duke. of course she gave the bike back and parked it exactly where her professor did. they sometimes travel outside of Gotham with just their bikes, either as vigilantes or as civilians.

with Damian, it's the games. Steph loves playing around the family like setting up traps and poking at them with the water and paint guns. Damian finds this very intriguing, so he goes to her when he wants to plot something for each family member. they also go to the carnivals together. Steph is more than willing to be competitive with Damian when it comes to carnival games. or even just a game of Scrabble and Chess.

Happy belated birthday to the Nintendo 64, released in North America on September 29th making it 28 years old!

No other console I've owned gives me the nostalgia bug like the N64. I have so many stories of the adventures I had with it I could almost write a book. Maybe someday I will, but for right now let's talk about how you can celebrate Nintendo's most unappreciated console. We'll look at some modern software, some underappreciated games you should play and some cool N64 oddities. (NOTE: None of the items mentioned are sponsored. I just really dig the products)

Brawler 64 Controller!

Available wired or wireless, the Brawler is for players who want to play the N64 with a more modern controller. I bought one some years back and have been nothing but satisfied with it. Check out my original review here. Shop here.

The Everdrive 64!

A cartridge capable of storing every N64 game EVER! Not just official games either, but fan-made game mods too! An absolute must if you're hardcore into N64 gaming. It should be noted, there are cheaper alternatives out there, but the rumor is that they can fry your console. KRIKzz-brand Everdrive's are known for their quality and for my money I want something that's not going to ruin my hardware. Check out my original review here. Shop here.

Underrated Games: Even with such a short library, there are good N64 games that don't have the Nintendo or Rare label on them. These aren't all of them, but here's a few that pop up in my mind when I think of the topic of underappreciated N64 games. Yes, some of these are ports but the N64 ports are the way I experienced them and I still prefer the N64 versions.

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour

In my opinion, the best sequel to Duke 3D. Don't let the 3rd-person perspective deter you, this is an authentic Duke Nukem game. Go through time shooting zombies, aliens, Jack the Ripper and send those alien scum packing. Duke's sense of humor is present, even under Nintendo's famous censorship guidelines.

Road Rash 64

A motorcycle racing game where you clobber the other racers with pipes, crowbars and plungers while avoiding the cops. It's so awesome and features one of the greatest songs Sugar Ray ever put out.

40 Winks

It was cancelled at 99% complete in the N64's heyday but publishing company Piko Interactive bought the rights and gave it an official release in 2019. While not what I would call a "classic" It's still a fun game to play over a weekend. As mentioned in my original review, it reminds me of a 3D adaptation of Nightmare on Elmstreet for NES.

007 - The World Is Not Enough

While not quite known as it's big brother, TWINE is a fun FPS Bond game in its own right. Eurocom (who developed Duke Nukem Zero Hour and 40 Winks!) knew they wasn't going to top Rare's iconic Goldeneye, but they did their best and it shows. The one advantage TWINE has over Goldeneye is multiplayer bots so you can play multiplayer because you don't have friends willing to come over because you're a 35-year-old father of two with a mortgage and 9-to-5.

Mods: The modding scene on the N64 is opening up and as a result we're getting some quality titles that extends the life of our favorite system. The one's mentioned here can be played on your actual N64 with the assistance of an Everdrive.

Smash Remix

Everyone collectively loves the original Super Smash Bros, but we can all agree it's pretty barebones in terms of content. Smash Remix fixed that with tons of new N64-era appropriate character additions, new levels, gameplay modes, music, costume changes and MORE. Phenomenal mod if you're a Smash 64 fan.

Shotgun Mario

Its Super Mario 64 but he has a shotgun. Fun for a laugh but adds a fun new mechanic to a classic. No more hoppin-and-boppin, Mario is here to dispense justice!

AKI-engine Wrestling Game Mods

I know most of you reading this aren't wrestling fans but the N64 had some iconic wrestling games thanks to Japanese studio AKI. Fans have been making mods for the AKI-developed titles like WWF No Mercy, Virtual Pro Wrestling 64, WCW vs NWO World Tour ect for years. It's hard to choose just one and each game has a wealth of characters, new arenas, match stipulations, create a wrestler options and much more.

Weirdo N64 Products: Any other time I would have 100 things to list but this is all I could find in the short time I have.

N64 Shirt!

Yes this bad boy is official. What other officially licensed shirt has Fox McCloud and a stormtrooper on it? In modern times, your best luck of finding something like this would be in a midwestern flea market.

Bill Goldberg Memory Card!

WCW legend Bill Goldberg had a memory card for some reason. I'm not complaining because it's awesome. Nothing I would love more than looking down after losing races in Diddy Kong to see big Bill yelling at me, motivating me to be a champion.

In conclusion: The N64 is a flawed but legendary console - it's popular but underrated, widely-known but intimate. My wishlist for the future is more awesome game mods of well known titles AND lesser known titles (let's fix Superman 64 or Carmageddon!). - Very edgy. Pictures he searched for hours on Pinterest and captions he edited 6373839 times

- Had phases where his instagram was public as he wanted for more people to battle against dark reunion, but his mom stumbled across his page once so he privated and deleted everything. He even deactivated for a day. He pretended the Dark Reunion hacked his account afterwards.

- Post are edgy to worrying, his friends know him but they do always double check after he says stuff like “my time his near”.

- Flexes his jewellery, but calls it his “gear” so it’s more cool and awesome !!!

- Each of his post have music on it, huge buck-tick & malice mizer fan, like he doesn’t play.

Harley-Davidson Barbie and Harley-Davidson Ken were collectors edition dolls to tie in with the famous motorcycle brand. To my knowledge there were a number of Barbies, over the years, bedecked in biker gear, as well as several Kens: some released as a giftset with a Barbie, and some on his own.

The Barbies were depicted in a range of different kinds of gear, mostly leather jackets of different styles, but occasionally some variety. The sets were relatively "edgy" by Mattel standards, often featuring Barbie in skimpy clothes showing her midriff, and depicting her and Ken with biker tattoos.

Probably one of the more racy is N6590 Harley-Davidson America's Favorites Barbie, as she is depicted with a lace-up bustier and a large tattoo covering the majority of her upper back.

But there's one particular standalone Ken of interest to me, as he is the first Ken I can remember seeing with chest hair. I'm certainly not going to say that he is definitively the only one, but that's uncommon enough as a design feature of Kens that I thought it was worth mentioning.

THE FRIDAY PIC is "Untitled (Make-up)," a 20" x 24" Ektacolor photo, dated 1982–84, from the show called "Richard Prince: Early Photography, 1977–87," at Gagosian gallery in New York.

Looking at the exhibition, I felt distinctly looked-at.

An ad for Kool-Aid, offered in a 1983 copy-shot by Prince, shows a pitcher bearing the drink's trademark smiley face, its two eyes locked onto ours.

In an ad for Trix cereal, copied by Prince that same year, the googly gaze of the brand's "silly rabbit" looks out at us, knowing we're looking back.

In Prince's famous grid of photos titled "Live Free or Die," reproduced from biker magazines in 1986, nine motorcycle molls stare out, as though, like Kool-Aid, they can deliver "more smiles per gallon."

It's hardly an overstatement — in fact, by now it's almost a cliché — to say that our culture is a culture of consumption and that Prince's art gets at the vital role of images and vision in that culture. Before we buy, we look, less at the objects of desire themselves than at the photos that teach us what to want. In the 62 early works at Gagosian, Prince lets us look at that looking. But also, as I've just begun to notice, at how those images, and this art, look back at us.

Today's Friday Pic shows a young woman gazing into the mirror that's hinged onto the back of a deluxe box of eye shadow: In the act of looking at herself in that mirror — of making-up her eyes to look perfect for looking — she presents herself to the admiring eyes of a magazine's reader. And then, by copying the shot that offers her up, Prince sets us up to watch that complex transaction between looker and reader, adding our art-loving gaze into the equation. It's an infinite regress of desiring glances.

At Gagosian, the woman in that shot, like the women and men — and silly rabbits — in other Prince works, are also looking out of them at us, art lovers, as we look in on them. Just because we're standing in a fancy gallery doesn't mean we aren't part of the same vision culture, the same vision economy, as everyone and everything captured in Prince's images of images. Our gaze at a work by Prince is the gaze of readers looking at an eye-shadow ad, which is the gaze deployed by the woman as she looks at herself in her mirror, which is the same gaze an admirer is meant to direct at her, now that she's made herself worth gazing at.

But there is one thing that distinguishes a work by Prince from the image it copies, our sight of a Prince from our sight of an ad. Unlike an ad, an artwork's first and chief function is simply to offer itself up to our eyes and minds — it has no plan for what comes after. If someone buys it, that's none of its business.

Even in an art world that is so much about sales, the early works of Prince are selling us a chance to see and think, not to buy.

to be fair to doctor who production!! in the time before the show got it’s reboot an extremely famous eccentric little motorcycle racer had decided to brand THE DOCTOR on the ass of all of his leathers for the rest of his life in giant cartoon letters. so you can imagine the kind of temptation they were under

I'm sorry to put this here I know this blog is dedicated to yoonmin but I also know that you are an ot7 and all this that is happening with yoongi worries me so much that sometimes it makes me lose sleep. I started following the group in chapter 2, I still haven't really seen them as the 7 BTS together and it makes me very scared not to see them together as 7.

Following from afar, sometimes I have the feeling that we will receive a notification of the big hits informing that Yoongi is no longer part of the group and this makes me so sad.

Is it normal for the company to do absolutely nothing officially to stop these attacks it has been receiving? Once again I apologize for the outburst and I hope you understand what I wrote because I still have a little difficulty with English.

This is just my opinion. This is a sensitive topic, but this is how I see it.

First of all, what Yoongi did is so minor. He was on a scooter…and not like a motorcycle/motorbike scooter. He was basically on a motorized skateboard. He was on the sidewalk. No one was hurt and no property was damaged. If he’d been on a different model/brand of scooter, what he did would have been completely legal. It even took the police a few days to figure out how to categorize his scooter, so how could Yoongi be expected to know? He thought that what he was doing was the safe way to get home after drinking. And yet here we are.

All of that said, I completely understand how you feel. This has been an awful time and I worry about Yoongi every day.

But here are some things that I believe and I hope maybe they make you feel better. We won’t know anything for sure until 2025, but in the meantime…

1. We don’t know how Yoongi feels right now, but we know he has the full support of the other members, of his loyal friends, and of many, many Army around the world. The media is being ridiculous. They are writing hundreds of articles about a man falling off a scooter, but very few about another idol who left his group due to SA allegations. They are hypocrites and bullies. I trust that Yoongi is wise enough to realize this and to know that what he did wrong is very, very minor.

2. BTS has risen to a level that goes beyond K-pop, so the regular patterns don’t apply. In the past, an idol might have had a “controversy” and been forced to leave the group. But Yoongi isn’t a typical idol. He is a writer and producer of a vast catalog of BTS songs. He’s a shareholder in the company. He is a Grammy nominee. And he is admired by a fan base who firmly believes that BTS is seven members. Period.

3. I’m calling this #3, but it should be 2a. BTS is internationally famous. That gives them a degree of freedom that other groups might not have.

4. I believe the members are close and that the 7 tattoos were no joke. They’ve demonstrated for 11+ years that they aren’t simply coworkers. They mean so much to each other. It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which they move forward without Yoongi.

In terms of the response of the company…time will tell, but I believe the company is waiting and being smart. There has not been an official conclusion to the investigation, so anything that’s said at this point—by either Yoongi or the company—has to be very precise and (I’d imagine) be approved by the company’s legal team, PR team, etc. But I have no doubt that the company is building a case and will go after anyone who has slandered/harmed/harassed Yoongi during this time.

Maybe this will sound naive, but I really do believe in karma, and it’s already at work. Every reporter who tried to bully Yoongi into harming himself…they can’t possibly be happy, fulfilled, secure people. They are miserable. They have to wake up every morning knowing they’ll write ten morally questionable, factually inaccurate articles about a man who is by all accounts smart, kind, and generous.

Same goes for the antis who want Yoongi to leave the group. These pathetic people are fundraising for trucks used to circle Hybe with negative messages about Yoongi, when instead they could be raising money for worthy causes. They know this, and they have to live with themselves every day. They dedicate hours of their time to harassing Yoongi instead of focusing on their work or studying or seeing friends or helping a neighbor or going for a jog or a million other worthwhile things they could be doing. And I have to imagine that’s absolutely miserable. Can you imagine someone asking you, “hey! What have you been up to?” and answering, “Oh, just stalking and harassing a perfectly nice person who is absolutely beloved by millions of people…” That can’t be fun.

Anyway, this turned into a really long post because I have made a point to not say too much about this whole situation, but there it is. I believe Yoongi will be fine, I believe the group will be fine, and I believe we will have a very happy 2025. Because I believe that what BTS has built will withstand this test, and I believe people who act shitty almost always lose in the ways that matter.
