Denver Union Station (No. 3)
When originally constructed, the Great Hall also included three large chandeliers and ten long wooden benches that incorporated heating and lighting into their framework. While the renovation saw the return of similar chandeliers as the originals, it also saw the removal of the benches due to asbestos. Other modifications made during 2012 included changing the brown and tan color scheme of the interior to a more neutral white. The old ticket counters and offices were also converted into the Terminal Bar along with several retail and restaurant spaces being created on the periphery of and opening on to the Great Hall. In general, the 2012 renovation sought to create "Denver's Living Room" in the Great Hall by diversifying its functions. It functions today as part hotel lobby, part Amtrak, part waiting area, part retail, and part public space.
Simultaneous with the construction of its surrounding site, the historic station house also underwent a complete renovation.
In 2011, a competition between the Denver Union Station Neighborhood Company and the Union Station Alliance (consisting of local firms Urban Neighborhoods Inc., Sage Hospitality, Larimer Associates, REGen, llc. and McWhinney) created different proposals for the future use of the structure. Both plans called for maintaining a waiting area for transit and spaces for Amtrak, the creation of retail spaces, and integrating the interior spaces with the public plazas facing the station. However, the Denver Union Station Neighborhood plan also envisioned a public market and commercial office space while the Union Station Alliance called for the integration of an independent hotel with an emphasis on creating the Great Hall as "Denver's Living Room". By 2012, RTD selected the proposal from the Union Station Alliance to renovate the structure as a hotel at a cost of $54 million with retail, public, and transit facilities and approved a 99-year lease for its redevelopment. The main historic building closed to the public on December 1, 2012, for construction and re-opened July 26, 2014. The majority of the terminal building's upper levels have now become the 112-room Crawford Hotel, with the 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) Great Hall on the ground level serving as the hotel lobby, public space, and train waiting room and an additional 22,000 square feet (2,000 m2) of the ground level serving as 10 independent retail and restaurant spaces.

This is ridiculous because even liberal sourecs recognize the disasterous effects of the USA's blockaid on Cuba.
At the UN general assembly on 23 June, a total of 184 countries supported Cuba’s motion for the end of the US blockade. It was the 29th year that Cuba’s vote had won Cuba’s critics blame the government for the daily hardships Cubans face, dismissing US sanctions as an excuse. This is like blaming a person for not swimming well when they are chained to the ground. The US blockade of Cuba is real. It is the longest and most extensive system of unilateral sanctions applied against any country in modern history. It affects every aspect of Cuban life.
The Guardian
Not only this, the idea that its just the US, and other countries can trade just fine, is entirely wrong.
In 1992, Congress passed the “Cuban Democracy Act,” introduced by Senator Robert Torricelli. Since 1975, foreign subsidiaries of U.S. corporations had routinely been given licenses to trade with Cuba, as long as the subsidiary functioned independently of the parent corporation and no U.S. goods or U.S. dollar transactions were involved. The Torricelli law prohibited these licenses, with the result that foreign subsidiaries were treated the same as U.S. corporations, with violators subject to the same penalties as U.S. companies. This constituted a clear international law, which holds that “a company is ordinarily considered to be a national of the state under the laws of which it is organized.” In addition, the Torricelli law imposed restrictions on shipping: any vessel that enters Cuba to provide goods or services, regardless of the country of origin, cannot stop at a U.S. port for 180 days; otherwise, both the ship and its cargo are subject to confiscation. This applies even to goods that the United States considers permissible* such as Cuban imports of food from third countries. The Torricelli law also prohibits third countries from selling goods to the United States that contain any amount of Cuban materials or any materials that have passed through Cuba. For example, no metal products can be sold to the United States that contain even trace amounts of Cuban nickel, one of Cuba’s major exports. Likewise, no Belgian chocolate may be sold in the United States unless the Belgian government provides assurances to the U.S. government that the chocolate contains no Cuban sugar, an export that is critical to the Cuban economy. The U.S. embargo measures interfere in Cuba’s access to international banks in several ways, even when they are not U.S. financial institutions. The United States prohibits Cuba from engaging in any transactions in U.S. dollars, and likewise prohibits any bank—including foreign banks— from facilitating commercial transactions by Cuba in U.S. dollars
*this also includes medical supplies.
This all is sumarized quite well with the statement:
In some regards, because of the extraordinary power held by the United States in many domains, the U.S. unilateral embargo functions as a global embargo.
Even fucking Canada called out the US on their BS
The intrusiveness of the 1992 Cuban Democracy Act and the 1996 Libertad Act created a backlash among American allies, and a number of major American trading partners responded with retaliatory legislation. After the passage of the Helms-Burton Act, Canada’s Prime Minister Jean Chretien denounced it as interference in Canada’s affairs: “If you want to have an isolationist policy, that’s your business. But don’t tell us what to do. That’s our business.” Canada additionally denounced the U.S. law as a violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on the grounds that the U.S. Congress was seeking to impose its foreign policy on other nations
The U.S. Embargo against Cuba and the Diplomatic Challenges to Extraterritoriality - Fairfield University. Here is also a similar video overview if you prefer that format.
It’s so funny how liberals will mention Cuba as a country run by a “dictatorship” when the US has kept them on a terrorism watchlist for years, which means they don’t have or have very little access to fuel, food, and other things necessary for its citizens survival. Same thing for North Korea.
These people were forced to become self-reliant and completely upend and redo how they run things because the United States essentially isolated them to punish them, and yet they’re somehow the bad guys in this scenario? The only reason the countries run as they do today is because of the United States and its desire to control any threats to its imperialist state.

Paul J. Hanly Jr., Top Litigator in Opioid Cases, Dies at 70 Paul J. Hanly Jr., a top trial lawyer who had been central to the current nationwide litigation against pharmaceutical companies and others in the supply chain for their role in the deadly opioid epidemic, died on Saturday at his home in Miami Beach. He was 70. The cause was anaplastic thyroid cancer, an extremely rare and aggressive disease, said Jayne Conroy, his longtime law partner. Over his four-decade career, Mr. Hanly, a class-action plaintiffs’ lawyer, litigated and managed numerous complex legal cases, involving among other things the funding of terrorists, stemming from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and allegations of the sexual abuse of dozens of boys by a man who ran an orphanage and school in Haiti. But nothing compares to the national opioid cases that are pending in federal court in Cleveland on behalf of thousands of municipalities and tribes against the manufacturers and distributors of prescription opioid pain medications. The federal opioid litigation is regarded by many as perhaps the most complex in American legal history — even more entangled and far-reaching than the epic legal battles with the tobacco industry. The defendants — including every link in the supply chain of opioid manufacturing, distributing and dispensing — are accused of aggressively marketing painkillers while downplaying the risks of addiction and overdose. Their actions, Mr. Hanly has argued, contributed to the opioid epidemic that has raged across the country for two decades, killing hundreds of thousands of people who started abusing pain medications like OxyContin and transitioned to street drugs like heroin and fentanyl. “This has probably been the most complicated constellation of litigation that’s come to the federal court in my tenure,” Judge Dan A. Polster of the Northern District of Ohio, who is overseeing the sprawling case, said in a phone interview on Saturday. “I’ve been fortunate to have the best lawyers in the country on all sides, and Paul was one of them.” “He was an excellent lawyer, a consummate professional,” the judge added. “He fought hard. He fought fairly. And that’s what you want from a lawyer, from an advocate.” He said that Mr. Hanly had a leadership role “in helping to organize and make cohesive the plaintiffs’ side of the case.” Mr. Hanly, of Simmons Hanly Conroy in New York, was one of three co-leads of the Plaintiffs Executive Committee, which handles all aspects of the case for plaintiffs, along with Joe Rice, of Motley Rice in South Carolina, and Paul T. Farrell Jr., of Farrell Law in West Virginia. At the same time, multiple opioid cases are proceeding at the state level. Mr. Hanly had also been preparing for a bellwether case against manufacturers and distributors that is scheduled to go to trial next month in Suffolk County, N.Y. He had long been at the forefront of efforts to hold drug companies accountable. He brought one of the first big lawsuits against Purdue Pharma in 2003 for failing to warn more than 5,000 patients about the addictive properties of OxyContin. His clients eventually settled with Purdue for $75 million. It was one of the few instances in which a drug maker agreed to pay individual patients who had accused it of soft-pedaling the risk of addiction. Mr. Hanly had a history of taking on complex cases with vast numbers of plaintiffs. Shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks, he represented some of the families who had lost loved ones on the planes and in the World Trade Center. He also filed suit to stop the sale of tanzanite, a raw stone used as a cash alternative to fund terrorist activities. That lawsuit was expanded to include foreign governments, banks and others that supported Al Qaeda. Portions of it remain pending. Another of his important cases was a 2013 landmark settlement of $12 million on behalf of 24 Haitian boys who said they had been sexually abused by Douglas Perlitz, who ran programs for underprivileged boys and was subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison. Mr. Hanly said the defendants, including the Society of Jesus of New England, Fairfield University and others, had not properly supervised Mr. Perliitz. Mr. Hanly filed additional charges in 2015, bringing the total number of abused youths to more than 100 between the late 1990s and 2010. “Paul was a lawyer’s lawyer,” said Ms. Conroy, his law partner. She said he was renowned for his exhaustive trial preparation, his creative trial strategies and his nearly photographic memory of the contents of documents. He was also known for veering sartorially from the muted grays and blacks of most lawyers to more jaunty attire in bright yellows, blues and pinks. He favored bespoke styles that were flashy yet sophisticated. His two-tone shoes were all handmade. In a recently published book about the opioid industry, “Empire of Pain,” Patrick Radden Keefe described Mr. Hanly as looking “like a lawyer in a Dick Tracy cartoon” with his bold colors and tailored shirts with stiff, contrasting collars. But none of this, Mr. Keefe made clear, diminished his competitive edge. “Paul was a man of few words and a commanding presence,” said David Nachman, who recently retired from the New York attorney general’s office, where he was the lead lawyer on the state’s opioid case and was working with Mr. Hanly to bring the case to trial in Suffolk County. “When he entered a room, everyone noticed,” Mr. Nachman said by email. “When he spoke, everyone listened, and when he smiled, you knew things would be OK.” Paul James Hanly Jr. was born in Jersey City, N.J., on April 18, 1951. His father held various government posts, including deputy warden of the Hudson County Penitentiary and hospital administrator. His mother, Catherine (Kenny) Hanly, was a homemaker. His family was rather notorious in New Jersey; some members had been indicted on corruption charges and had served time in jail. These included his maternal grandfather, John V. Kenny, a former mayor of Jersey City and a powerful Hudson County Democratic boss known as “the pope of Jersey City,” who was jailed in the 1970s after pleading guilty to charges of income tax evasion. Mr. Hanly took a different path. He went to Cornell, where his roommate was Ed Marinaro, who went on to play professional football and later became an actor (best known for “Hill Street Blues”). Mr. Hanly, who played football with him, graduated in 1972 with a major in philosophy and received a scholar-athlete award as the Cornell varsity football senior who combined the highest academic average with outstanding ability. He earned a master’s degree in philosophy from Cambridge University in 1976 and a law degree from Georgetown in 1979. He then clerked for Lawrence A. Whipple, a U.S. District Court judge in New Jersey. Mr. Hanly’s marriage in the mid-1980s to Joyce Roquemore ended in divorce. He is survived by two sons, Paul J. Hanly III and Burton J. Hanly; a daughter, Edith D. Hanly; a brother, John K. Hanly; and a sister, Margo Mullady. He began his legal career as a national trial counsel and settlement counsel to Turner & Newall, a British asbestos company, one of the world’s largest, in its product-liability cases. The company was purchased by an American firm, Federal-Mogul, in 1998, after which it was overwhelmed with asbestos claims and filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Mr. Hanly and Ms. Conroy spent much of their time steeped in negotiations with plaintiffs’ lawyers. They soon switched to representing plaintiffs themselves. “We recognized over time that that was more important to us,” Ms. Conroy said, “to make sure victims were compensated for what happened.” Jan Hoffman contributed reporting. Denver Union Station (No. 2)
Each of these transportation elements are tied together above ground by major public spaces and landscape elements such as the 17 St. Promenade/Gardens, Wynkoop Plaza and several other public plazas.
Historically, a subterranean passage accessed through the northern wing building connected the station to the old rail platforms above. However, the passage and its entrance was demolished with the construction of the bus terminal.
The present-day Union Station building consists mainly of two lower wing buildings flanking a larger central mass built during different parts of the station's history. The wing buildings were built with the first 1881 structure in a Romanesque Revival style, featuring tall, narrow windows, rusticated stonework and motifs of Colorado's state flower, the columbine. When the station was gutted by the 1894 fire, the facades of the wing buildings were incorporated into the 1894 depot and the 1914 renovation. They originally functioned as offices and other facilities for the station through its history, although today the structures house guestrooms for the Crawford Hotel and several restaurants.

NAMEPA Invites Maritime Industry Leaders to Discuss “A New Decade"

TRIBUTE TO DUSTER BENNETT
ANY BENEFIT concert that Alexis and Co. might organise for the family of Tony “Duster” Bennett would make real sense if Peter Green was there to lead the parade.
For at a time some eight years ago when Duster was reluctant to push his one man band routine it was Green who gave him more encouragement than anyone, urging him to make a career of his music and ultimately bringing him to Mike Vernon’s attention by putting him second on the bill to Fleetwood Mac at the now legendary Blue Horizon Club.
Tony Bennett was almost dogmatic in his beliefs and was not easily persuaded to abandon a career in ceramics and pottery. But with a guitar style similar to Jimmy Reed, a brilliant harmonica technique in the tradition of Slim Harpo and a Heath Robinson rig out which evoked comparisons with Jesse Fuller, Duster quickly made the Surrey club scene all his own just as the Stones and Yardbirds had done five years before.
This quiet, diffident bluesman never really received the acclaim he deserved although down in Surrey – particularly at his ‘home’ club, the famous Gin Mill in Godalming, where he always outdrew Fleetwood Mac, Free, Jethro Tull and so on – he was a legend. His second album “Bright Lights . . .” was recorded live at the Gin Mill and featured his wife Stella, Peter Green (credited as Blue), Top Topham (the old Yardbird) and Tony Mills (his bass player-cum-roadie).
Over this period he became a good friend although he never seemed certain which way his career should be guided. He turned down many tempting offers . . . including a management offer from Peter Grant after touring the States. In fact his overall guardedness probably stems from the days shortly after he quit the Georgia Skin Band and wound up across the national newspapers busking to theatre queues with acoustic guitar, bass drum, hi hat and harmonica. It was something that repulses him.
Coming from Richmond, the sixties home of rhythm and blues, his vista was much wider than that, and his first album “Smiling Like I’m Happy” had every texture of fifties blues from city r&b to loose southern combo music. He would state such diverse influences as Tommy McClennan on the one hand and Bobby ‘Blue’ Band on the other.
When it looked as though Duster’s career was heading into a rut John Mayall asked him to join the band for a British and American tour. But on his return Duster’s career once again fluctuated. He’d built up a huge following in British clubs and in the States, but afer an abortive attempt to get his own band going with American RICK WRIGHT he went into a recession and over the past five years had largely fallen into oblivion, changing his base from Hampton to Dorking and finally to the Midlands. His third album “12DBs” had not been wholely successful and once he quit Mike Vernon’s Blue Horizon label his recording career was at an end.
But despite his relative absence from the music scene over recent years he will be greatly missed, not only for his genuinely self-effacing, philanthopic demeanor but also because he went as far as anyone in proving that white men could indeed sing the blues. – JERRY GILBERT

Several leading universities have failed to score highly in a new ranking of degree teaching standards.
The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) has rated 295 institutions bronze, silver or gold according to their standard of undergraduate teaching.
Gold went to 59 and silver to 116.
The lowest score of bronze was awarded to 56 – including the London School of Economics (LSE), Southampton, Liverpool, Goldsmiths and the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas).
The new teaching rankings aim to help students make informed choices about degree courses, but many universities rated as bronze have criticised the system as unfair and unreliable.
Drop-out rates
The TEF, which was introduced by the previous government, is being administered by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce).
Degree providers – a mixture of universities, colleges offering degree courses and alternative providers – could choose whether or not to take part.
However, those awarded a bronze or higher – all institutions that took part, besides 64 who were given a provisional rating – are now set to be able to raise tuition fees, which currently stand at about 9,000, in line with inflation in 2018-19.
Image copyright Getty Images
Higher education providers are assessed on a range of measures, including facilities, student satisfaction, drop-out rates and whether students go on to employment or further study after graduating.
It is based on data and not actual inspections of lectures or other teaching.
Ten further education colleges that offer degrees received the top ranking of gold, alongside some elite universities.
University grading system explained
Differences between institutions, such as entry qualifications and subjects studied, were taken into account by an independent panel – made up of 27 academics, students, employers and experts in widening participation – which made the final awards.
A gold award means a university is of the highest quality found in the UK, providing “consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students”, while the silver award was given for consistently exceeding “rigorous national quality requirements for UK higher education” and bronze was awarded to those that met these national requirements.
The ranking of provisional is given to those institutions that do not yet have sufficient data to be fully assessed.
Hefce said the rankings measured the issues that students cared about:
high-quality, engaged teaching
a supportive, stimulating learning environment
having the knowledge and skills they need to achieve their potential
the opportunity to progress to a good job or further study
Madeleine Atkins, chief executive of Hefce, said students invested significant amounts of time and money in their higher education and “rightly expected a high-quality learning experience and outcomes”.
Prof Chris Husbands, who chairs the TEF assessment panel, said he hoped the TEF “provided clear and easily understandable ratings to be used alongside other information”.
He stressed that within individual awards, universities may have elements of others – for example a university awarded bronze could have elements of gold or silver.
Nick Hillman, director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, said the fact that some of the results “seemed surprising” suggested the TEF was working.
“The TEF would have comprehensively failed if it had simply replicated existing hierarchies,” he said.
“It was always designed to do something different to other league tables and rankings – namely, to show where there are pockets of excellence that have been ignored and to encourage improvements elsewhere.”
But he added that students should remember the TEF did not accurately reflects precisely what goes on in lecture halls”.
“I hope university applicants will use the results in their decision-making – but they should do so with caution, not least because the ratings are for whole universities rather than individual courses,” he said.
Sir Christopher Snowden, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton, which received a bronze award, said it was “hard to have confidence in a TEF which appears devoid of any meaningful assessment of teaching”.
Image copyright Getty Images
“I know I am not alone in having deep concerns about its subjective assessment, its lack of transparency, and with different benchmarks for each institution removing any sense of equity and equality of assessment,” he said.
“Our own student satisfaction metrics, including satisfaction with teaching, are better than some of those universities who have been awarded silver and gold today.”
Southampton intends to appeal against its rating.
Dr Deborah Johnston, pro-director of Soas, said she was concerned that the TEF did not “accurately reflect what we do”.
“There is clearly also a London effect, with one in three London institutions achieving bronze, compared to just one in eight outside London.
“The metrics were not benchmarked for London, when we believe there was a significant difference for London institutions, for example in relation to retention rates due to costs of living.”
In a statement, the University of Liverpool said it was disappointing to receive a bronze rating, but added that the TEF was “not an absolute measure of quality”.
“By other widely recognised rankings, the University of Liverpool is consistently named in the top 200 universities globally,” it said.
“Nonetheless, we’re committed to improving against the measures used in the TEF.”
Patrick Loughrey, warden of Goldsmiths said the TEF rating showed “we must improve in a number of areas to ensure our students have the best possible experience during their time here”.
“We are already working hard to do this, and look forward to meeting these challenges together over the coming months and years” he said.
Interim director of the LSE, Prof Julia Black, said there were limits to the measures the TEF used, but added: “We recognise that we have work to do, but we are confident that the education initiatives that we have under way will lead to improvements for our students.”

This spacious Devon holiday home boasts breathtaking beach views, floor-to-ceiling windows and chic décor.
2. Explore the Scottish Highlands on a Personalised Safari
Transform a 40th birthday party into an awe-inspiring adventure in Perthshire. A Land Rover Highland Safari, tailored according to your interests, is a unique opportunity to observe stunning Scottish wildlife while travelling through dramatic, glorious landscapes. Your journey begins on the outskirts of the market town of Aberfeldy, about which Robert Burns, Scotland’s best-loved poet, wrote in 1787 after a Highlands tour of his own. Explore rugged mountains, pine forests and beautiful rivers, as you look for creatures as diverse as golden eagles and roe deer. Round off your trip with a birthday lunch in a rustic hilltop bothy. Near Aberfeldy, you’ll find a grand Loch Tay holiday home called Stucktaymore. With four-poster beds, a media room and hot tub, this Victorian hunting lodge is ideal for a birthday getaway.
3. Pick a Winner at York’s Prestigious Racecourse
There can be few more thrilling ways to celebrate a 40th birthday than by cheering on the jockeys and horses at one of England’s finest racecourses. The formal dress code, first-class facilities and majestic surroundings will give your visit a real sense of occasion. Head to the County Stand, York Racecourse’s most prestigious enclosure, and enjoy fantastic views of the racetrack. Don’t miss the champagne lawn – it’s a great setting for a birthday toast. Alternatively, hold a party in the exclusive Gimcrack Suite for the ultimate in luxury. Select your favourite horses at the Parade Ring, place your bets, and then try one of the racecourse’s award-winning ‘dine and view’ experiences. Inspired by the opulence of ocean liners, Ebor Restaurant is ideal for a birthday meal. Clifton, a roomy holiday home in York, is similarly elegant. This Georgian property combines period charm with modern comforts.
4. Tour the Finest Country House in East Yorkshire
Enjoy a taste of life as an aristocrat during a private tour of Sledmere House, regarded as East Yorkshire’s finest country retreat. Encompassing some of the most beautiful interiors in England, the guided tour is bound to make a 40th birthday extra special. Grade I-listed Sledmere is a unique blend of Georgian and Edwardian elegance, with an imposing staircase, painted ceilings and Chippendale furniture. The Turkish Room, inspired by Istanbul’s Yeni Mosque, is particularly eye-catching. The house is surrounded by almost 1,000 acres of parkland. Why not hire the marquee lawn for a magnificent birthday bash? The Old Granary in Burton Agnes is conveniently close to Sledmere and a luxurious property in its own right. This rustic holiday home has period features, a light and airy dining hall, plus a hot tub.
5. Take to the Skies over Scotland’s Loch Lomond
For a spectacular start to your or a loved one’s 40s, how about flying over Scotland in a luxurious seaplane? The Fly to Lunch service from Loch Lomond Seaplanes makes a birthday truly magical. You’ll set off from Loch Lomond, the UK’s most expansive inland body of water, and travel in style. Enjoy panoramic views of historic castles, gorgeous glens and breathtaking mountains before a celebratory lunch at the picturesque Venachar Lochside restaurant, where the locally sourced dishes include baked Venachar trout. After the return leg of your journey, you can sip champagne by Loch Lomond and reflect on this one-of-a-kind experience. It’s no wonder that the seaplane flights have attracted numerous famous passengers including Hollywood star Ben Stiller. Stuckgowan House, a lavish Loch Lomond holiday home, has an idyllic terrace that’s perfect for further birthday celebrations.
6. Watch Wonderful Welsh Wildlife on a Caldey Island Cruise
A fantastic 40th birthday surprise for a nature lover is a Caldey Island cruise. Relax and unwind while experiencing wonderful wildlife and stunning scenery just off the beautiful Tenby coast. You’ll travel to historic Caldey, one of the UK’s Holy Islands, on a specially designed catamaran. Nearby, St Margaret’s Island is a haven for a whole host of wild birds, including the largest population of cormorants in Wales. Puffins nest in the cliffs, while gannets, kittiwakes and razorbills are also fond of the area. If you’re particularly lucky, you might even see dolphins and seals – so don’t forget your camera! Back on dry land, you can continue the birthday party at a palatial Tenby holiday home, Waterwynch House. Amazing sea views, lavish facilities and access to a secluded beach make this property stand out.
7. Tempt Your Taste Buds in Scotland’s Seafood Capital
A luxury 40th birthday party calls for the finest food and drink to share with those closest to your heart. For high-quality, delicious dishes, the ‘Seafood Capital of Scotland’ (otherwise known as Oban) is unmissable. This dazzling open-air show is held in the grounds of the magnificent medieval castle in County Durham’s Bishop Auckland. It runs from July to September, which makes it an ideal ‘big four-o’ birthday treat for anyone who was born during the summer or wants to celebrate when the weather is fine. Kynren (the title comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for ‘family’) takes you on a magical journey through the Gatehouse of Time, lighting up the night sky with extraordinary pyrotechnics and other special effects. It’s hard to think of a more inspiring backdrop for a special birthday party. Within easy reach of the castle is Fairfield House in Weardale, a sprawling North East holiday home with luxurious interiors, private tennis courts and lush green surroundings.

Nestling in rolling countryside and not far from Beverley, the well-equipped cookery school provides expert tuition in a friendly atmosphere. There’s a huge range of options – and whatever you choose, rest assured that the staff will take care of the washing up! Nothing compares to the sense of achievement you and your companions will feel as you feast on the fine food you’ve prepared. Its hot tub, sauna, courtyard garden and beautifully restored rooms will undoubtedly enhance your birthday celebrations.
11. Hear World-Class Music at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
When you want a 40th birthday party that’s filled with world-class culture, head to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Located at the top of the city’s ‘style mile’, this impressive music venue is one of Scotland’s leading arts centres. Whether you enjoy listening to Tchaikovsky or Tony Bennett, The Cranberries or Caledonian pipe music, you’ll find performances to help you celebrate in style. Here’s a top tip: before you book your tickets, take a virtual tour of the main auditorium to find the perfect seats for you and your loved ones. For peaceful group accommodation that’s less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow’s hustle and bustle, try Balvonie House in Skelmorlie. This Scottish holiday home combines architectural splendour with sea views and a sense of fun, making it a wonderful choice for a birthday break.
12. Enjoy a Private Winery Tour in Henley-on-Thames
Grapes grown in the glorious Chiltern Hills lead to fantastic fine wines. That’s why a bespoke tour and tasting session at the Chiltern Valley Winery & Brewery makes a wonderful 40th birthday present for anyone who enjoys a good tipple. The wines are made in historic buildings in Henley-on-Thames. During your private tour of the premises, you and your chosen companions will learn about every aspect of the wine production process, from pressing grapes to creating labels. Afterwards, there’s an opportunity to sample a selection of wines, in addition to other alcoholic beverages, under the guidance of an expert. Cheers! At Chimney Corner, a spacious holiday home just a stone’s throw from Henley, you can continue the birthday celebrations with the aid of a sauna, large garden and BBQ.
