Fanbinding: Anthem for a Doomed Youth by @fahye
When she was younger she watched people carefully in order to become them, but it was like memorising a song in another language: the imitation was perfect but she never bothered to learn what it meant.
I started this about a year and a half ago when I was first experimenting with leather bindings: I didn't like it, so I stuck both copies (with equally bad bindings) in a drawer for a while before finally cutting the bad covers off a few weeks ago.
I made the one at the top first (which I sent to the author): I was planning on duplicating it exactly for the second one, but there were some flaws in the second piece of leather I wanted to cover up, and I didn't have any more good edge on that first blue. So! They get to be mirrors of each other instead. (I think I like the lighter blue better, but prefer the author name on the right side of the cover.)
Sanding under the paper onlays was significantly more complicated than I thought it would be, since I had to make sure I wasn't sanding the leather where it would show in the holes for the leathers. I ended up putting the letters down in removable vinyl and sanding around them, but getting it all to align right was very stressful. 0/10 I'm sure I will do it again because I do like how that came out. er

Bookbindings of Rare the man that’ll hold to faith by Fahye, July 2023.
Another set from the Renegade Bindery Tiny Books Bang! Text: Rare the man that’ll hold faith (MDZS wangxian Green Knight AU) by @fahye Typesetting: @teleportbooks
————- More info under the cut
Three similar versions of Rare the man that’ll hold to faith by Fahye, typeset by EHyde, bound by myself! Two of these bindings have endpapers of handmade marbled paper by Æthereal Press (thanks @aetherseer <3).
I was so excited to get this fantastic typeset, in which EHyde used a number of historical decorations from Klemscott Press on the title page and section dividers. I cannot get over all the cool decorative bits in this typeset you guys. Just look at that title page!! I had so much fun reading this fic in hard copy and giggling over all the little teeny leaves and fancy letters.
I chose to use one of the smaller decorative grape vine designs for the cover, since I have not had good luck using the cricut or hand-writing on title letters small enough for these spines. I think it looks pretty neat :D
Decisions were made: I like using small books to try out new techniques, and for these I tried out stitching in the endpapers. That was uhh not the greatest idea for something I intended to give away tbh, but I think the results still look alright. This endpaper style is extremely uncommon in recently published books, though one might find it in fancy editions of books made around a hundred years ago. I think it’s pretty cool and I like that it can subtly emphasize a handmande book being constructed differently from most of what bookstores can sell! I should have paid closer attention to matching my tapes and the lining of my covers. The gapping is a cosmetic problem more than a structural problem, and they should be quite sturdy, though I do wish I had been able to line these up better.
Materials: Laser printed text on archival paper, letter size folded sextodecimo; cotton thread and beeswax stitching with archival paper scrap for reinforcement; the case is scrabooking paper and bookcloth, archival PVA and bookboard, and metallic cover decoration made of heat-transfer vinyl. Endpapers are either archival scrapbooking paper or handmade marbled paper with some shimmery accents. Cotton scrap faux-endbands and unknown scrap ribbon for the bookmarks.

It amuses Otabek that it never occurred to Yuri to just ask, but that doesn’t seem to be how the fae do things. Nothing so straightforward. What they want, they win.
Otabek finds that the Fae have some blind spots (chp. 1)
hood & glove by Fahye, hawberries (AO3) Yuri!!! On Ice – Teen – Otabek Altin/Yuri Plisetsky, Katsuki Yuuri/Viktor Nikiforov #Alternate Universe #Fairy Tale #Fae
“I don’t mess with the fae,” Otabek says.
“I’m not asking you to mess with them,” JJ flat-out lies.

One of my favorite fic tropes is "everyone thinks we hate each other but actually I venerate you and will go undercover as your enemy while secretly serving you"
Exemplars include:
Single Use Weapon by @fahye (Kings, David/Jonathan; I know nothing about Kings other than gifsets of Sebastian Stan crying but this is one of my all-time favorite fics)
The tale was all a lie by @et-in-arkadia (Les Miserables, Enjolras/Grantaire; Ark is always amazing and this is another all-time favorite)

The Water Outlaws by S. L. Huang
Mountain outlaws on the margins of society, the Bandits of Liangshan proclaim a belief in justice—for women, for the downtrodden, for progressive thinkers a corrupt Empire would imprison or destroy. They’re also murderers, thieves, smugglers, and cutthroats. Together, they could bring down an empire.
Now available in paperback!
Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune
The long-awaited sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it. Welcome back to Marsyas Island—home to six magical and purportedly dangerous children. This is Arthur’s story.

The West Passage by @jpechacek
When the Guardian of the West Passage dies in her bed, the women of Grey Tower feed her to the crows and go back to their chores. No successor is named, and no hand takes up the fallen blade, so the West Passage—the ancient byways of the beast—goes unguarded. This is a weird and delightful journey across a deliriously medieval landscape where decay thrives in abundance and giant Ladies rule a palace the size of a city.
Blood Debts by Terry J. Benton-Walker
On the thirtieth anniversary of the largest magical massacre in New Orleans history, Clement and Cristina Trudeau mourn their father and care for their sick mother. But their mother isn’t sick, they learn: She’s cursed. Cursed by a member of the same magic council over which she used to preside. Cursed by someone who will come for Clement and Cristina next.

Bury Your Gays by @drchucktingle
After so many years, Misha’s big Oscar moment is here. All he has to do? Kill off the gay characters in his long-running streaming series, “for the algorithm.” Misha refuses, but that’s hardly the end, because monsters from his old horror movie days have begun to step out from the silver screen and stalk him.
The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo
The Cleric Chih accompanies a young bride to her wedding to Lord Guo, the aging ruler of a crumbling estate, but amid the elaborate courtesies and extravagant banquets, they realize something haunts the shadowed halls. As the big night nears close, Chih will learn that not all monsters dwell in shadows; some hide in plain sight.

Remedial Magic by Melissa Marr
1) An unassuming librarian falls in love with a powerful witch.
2) Previous librarian discovers she too is a witch…
3) …and that she must attend magical community college to learn how to save her new world from annihilation.
Swordcrossed by @fahye
Part-time con artist / full-time charming menace Luca Piere didn’t expect to get blackmailed into teaching a chronically responsible merchant Matti how to wield a sword. He also didn’t expect to find his charge so inconveniently handsome, or to get so entangled in his tale of intrigue, sabotage, and matrimony.
It’s important to read Swordcrossed because while you’re reading gay fiction, you can also study the blade.

Part 2/2 of my promo art for Swordcrossed by @fahye, out now! See the one I did for the ladies here.
I got to go to an actual sword museum to do sketches and research for swords! Which was a highlight of my summer! These boys are such lovable walking disasters, I adore them with my whole heart but also want to slap them repeatedly. Private sword lessons where the student's progress is hopeless but the flirting is through the roof 👌

Hiroko imperiously beckons Victor over, then pulls his head down to hers with her palms on his cheeks. “He admires you so much, Victor,” she says. “I think he’d do anything you wanted him to do.” Victor guiltily swallows down the first three responses that spring to mind, none of which are appropriate for anyone’s mother to hear.
Viktor POV (chp. 1)
Stargazer by Fahye (AO3) Yuri!!! On Ice – Teen – Katsuki Yuuri/Viktor Nikiforov #Alternate Universe #Space #Royalty #Sports
“No, see, we’ve all been trained a certain way. The training system is traditional; it’s centuries old. Nobody taught you. You ballist like it’s got nothing to do with war at all.” A sleepy, extraordinary smile crawls over Victor’s face. “Nobody else does it like that. That’s why we’re going to win.”

DRAWTOBER #13 - A Series of Optical Illusions by Fahye
This is bait, but the best bait is the truth; there is no lie in Jack's arm around her waist, in his fingers tangled through hers. Miss Phryne Fisher sets a trap, throws a party, and reconciles her differences.
I've not read fic for Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries before this year but by god I ought to have been, I love a good case fic and this is an EXCELLENT case fic - with a brilliant side of character delving to boot! this little speech in particular really got me between the ribs, I loved it.
(when I was writing out this description I got to the author name and was like "hmmm, why is this familiar?" and YES, this is by Fahye of half cloak & half dagger fame! they honestly have a truly fucking astounding number of different fandoms written for on their ao3,)
