GOOD LORD!! CIRCULAR CONVERSATIONS ARE GENUINELY SOOO FRUSTRATING. I've had my new car for a WEEK and for a WEEK it's been the SAME SHIT between the hubbers and the MIL:

He mentions the car bc he's excited about it

She goes on an emotionally charged RANT about how concerned she is that we went and bought this car and how she's worried about all the debt we have and that we won't be able to "just vibe"

He assures her we went over everything (which we did) and that it's affordable for us (it being the bi-weekly payment)

It stops there. He laments to me. I reassure. I boost him the FUCK UP LIKE HE DESERVES TO BE! 😤

He brings up the car again with her in the hopes she'll be like I'm also excited about this for you!!

She instead once more lectures us on debt

He once again reassures her

He comes to me lamenting once more

I am stuck watching this circle and smacking my head against the wall

I love this man so much, and he does NOT deserve the shit his mother is giving him and I VERY MUCH DISLIKE that he is STILL SEEKING HER APPROVAL. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE WE DIDN'T BUY THE CAR FOR HIM!! WE BOUGHT IT FOR M E AND HE CO-SIGNED BC THE PAYMENT IS CHEAPER AND HE IS VERY EXCITED THAT WE HAVE A NEW, RELIABLE VEHICLE THAT IS SAFE FOR ME! HE'S HAPPY I'M SAFE!

I hate circular arguments y'all. They make me want to explodE. My entire morning/afternoon has been reassuring the hubbers and trying to point out how the convo is circular bc he's looking for her approval and excitement but she is looking for Something Else BC she's worried about our finances. Guys, imma be real with you. This is an affordable payment for us. It's literally only coming out of MY PAYCHECK since it's MY CAR and they BOTH seem to be forgetting that and it's causing this stupid discussion that won't end until either:

He tells her he's heard her concerns and asks her what she's looking for (since despite his reassurances and walking her thru the process we went thru last weekend and showing her the numbers and how it all works out fine she STILL keeps voicing her concerns, to the point where I haven't even talked with her about it but am dying to yell WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE US TO DO MARGE, GET RID OF THE CAR??? Because really, what WOULD you like us to do and it's presumptuous of you to assume we can't handle it and will need your help)

He tells her he's heard her concerns and asks her to just listen to his and please show some excitement because he's excited about it, so why can't you be

They let it die and never talk about it again the end OR

He understands that this is another one of those Margie being Margie scenarios and he's not gonna get her approval or excitement, and accepts that all he needs in this scenario is his OWN acceptance and excitement, and find a way to be OKAY with that

And I don't know how LIKELY any of these are going to be in the near future (and dw, I texted him that blurb already so hopefully it's on his mind and he makes good choices, good choices being either 1 or 4 bc this isn't gonna get resolved any time soon with my MIL's old fashioned REPRESS UR EMOTIONS ass 😤) so I am instead FUMING about situations OUTSIDE OF MY CONTROL bc as an outsider Incan see how it's going and after 4 years of therapy I can see what needs to be done bc I'VE BEEN THERE TOO

lip, fiona, and frank: refractions, not reflections

writing this because i think people talk a lot about lip and fiona 'turning into' frank as the seasons go on because they inherit his alcoholism, yet that doesn't really capture the exact nature of their character arcs and isn't entirely fair to them as individuals.

i personally think the fact that they inherit his addiction issues make their stories so interesting because alcoholism doesn't manifest in their characters/story arcs the same way it does in frank's. also, the fact that they actually want to recover (and do!) makes them so fundamentally different from him that it's astounding.

not saying that they don't inherit frank's anger, or his cleverness, or etc., but i don't think their inheritance of his alcoholism is a 1-to-1 comparison and that's narratively important!!! (restricting my english major analysis to under the cut).

frank, notably, drinks and does drugs throughout the show because, as he claims, it’s his way of life; getting out of his mind and partying is what makes him happy. it gives him purpose in life. it numbs the pain. he could recover if he wanted to (like in season one), but his sense of self is so tied up with his addiction that doing so would mean killing the version of himself frank likes best. booze was his first love; he’ll never leave it. and he’s passed it on to his children.

lip

i think lip’s alcoholism arc was so poignant and painfully realistic in the show. him talking about how he started drinking at 12 (influenced by frank, it’s easy to presume) to numb the pain of his fucked up life was just heartbreaking, and him getting drunk with frank in season two when he feels aimless and scared and lost after graduating high school was like a punch to the gut. it’s clear that his addiction comes not just from a place of wanting to fit in and being socialized into thinking it’s normal and fine by his father and neighborhood, but also out of a desire for relief.

the first time he gets help, he treats it like a joke. like his father, he doesn’t believe in aa, pokes fun at the 12-step program, rations his chips so he can continue drinking. he’s in denial about his problem, which is chilling to see.

the scene where he’s in the bar downing vodka in the middle of the day and kev confronts him for dropping out of college by saying “that’s where your father sits every day” is so painful. because frank was in college, too, before his crazy relationship and his addictions and self sabotage derailed his life, and lip could go the exact same way.

and lip is still convinced he’s fine. it’s reminiscent of frank’s assertions that he doesn’t have a problem, that he could stop anytime, that everyone’s making a big deal out of nothing. neither he nor lip are fooling anyone.

but what distinguishes lip's addiction from frank's is that lip doesn’t just drink because he likes it and the person it makes him; he starts to not, actually, like the person it makes him. it's just tgat his life is falling apart around him. he’s stressed from college (where he feels he doesn't belong), from helène (who doesn't want him), from youens (who he desperately wants to please). he gets sloshed at parties to let loose and have fun and just forget about everything for once and escape.

the main difference between them is that escapism; lip doesn't necessarily enjoy being drunk, he just does it to feel good, to party, to just let go and leave his shitty life and choices behind. but notably, he isn't satisfied with escapism or empty fun the way frank is; he wants more. he knows he and the people around him deserve more.

the second time he gets help, it’s because his eyes have been opened to his problem. frank, of all people, calls him out. things with sierra go to shit. and he knows he needs help for real this time. it’s not easy; he struggles, is lost in terms of career and education and relationships for a bit, and he relapses sometimes. but he fights it because he doesn’t want to be like his father.

really, frank led lip down the path of addiction in the first place, and not wanting to continue down that path is what makes him want to get better.

fiona

fiona’s shown drinking pretty regularly throughout the show, as well as doing drugs in s4, but her alcoholism doesn’t hit a peak and come to the forefront of her issues until her life goes to complete shit in s9.

her boyfriend betrays her. she loses her job and her apartment complex. her attempts to make money all go down the drain. her dreams are shattered. no one in her family needs her anymore (something she's built her entire identity on, which leaves her completely unmoored). so she goes to the alibi every night and gets hammered because she’s lost and needs to forget. which is all too familiar...

but what’s interesting is that frank actually confronts her about being a “bad drunk.” he expresses again that he enjoys drinking, has fun with it, takes it slow and has a good time, but accuses fiona of not knowing when to stop. this is true. frank’s alcoholism is his way of life, but fiona’s is a cry for help. it is self destructive at its core.

fiona drinks to forget, sure, but she doesn't drink to have fun or feel good or loosen up enough to party; she's still miserable the entire time she's drunk and intentionally goes far enough to black out every night. she's seeking escape, too, but not just from the world; fiona drinks because she's so deep in her own self-loathing she wants to get away from herself. she wants to destroy herself.

and she's in denial about it, too! she doesn’t realize she has a true problem until she almost gets robbed or potentially hurt by some guys at patsy’s. she doesn’t seek help until lip kicks her out - which is a whole other issue - and it’s then that she realizes she needs help.

but unlike lip, who has support in his recovery from his family and friends, fiona’s alone. her family isn’t understanding; they give up on her in the name of “tough love.” she’s on her own. but she does it.

and it makes her realize she doesn’t have to stick around and feel useless and sad. it's not the person she has to be, not anymore. getting sober made her realize her potential - and what she needed to do to reach it. it made her realize she could leave. getting sober made her free.

in conclusion

it's perfectly fair to say fiona and lip inherit some of frank's qualities due to their abuse/neglect/parentification/etc at his hands, as well as their poor coping mechanisms for their shitshow of a life. but their relationship with alcohol - and recovery - are fundamentally different.

ultimately, the fact that they choose recovery at all is the biggest indicator of their difference from him. because frank only ever recovers for money or for a dare; never for the things that matter, like his health or his children. fiona and lip, however, care about their family and friends and don't want to hurt them. they want to be better individuals. they want to learn how.

their desire to do good, when compared to frank's utter disregard for the world around him, is truly at the crux of their identities and makes them, honestly, leagues better than their father.

Currently, they should be staying in an elven village on the outskirts of Du Weldenvarden. “It will take time to gather people. I want you to stay for a few months at the very least, long enough for us to get initial impressions. Ideally, you would stay until spring; it’s hard to predict how much time this could take.”

Murtagh’s brows angle down in a tense V, watching with the acuity of a hunting hawk. “...Nasuada, I can’t do that.”

She compresses her disappointment between the tight line of her lips. “And why is that?” she asks sharply, unsatisfied, determined to  convince him. Gray eyes flitting over her strangely, his frown twists further. “I can come up with a sound excuse for you to remain in my company for an extended time, and you will enjoy the comfort of the castle all the while. I trust you. I won’t require you to swear yourself to my service nor put you under my control, I only ask that you report to me. So there’s nothing you need to worry about.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“Then what is?!” Nasuada exclaims. “This is important! What else could possibly be so significant and impactful that it makes you want to skirt this responsibility?”

“Responsibility?” Murtagh cuts in, razor edged. “This is not my responsibility. This isn’t my place- I’m not obligated to do this. If I were to do it, it would be a selfless, generous favor to you, so don’t act as though I’m robbing you of something I owe.” She keeps her lips pursed, restraining a reply with the belief it would be counterproductive to argue that point. Murtagh forces out a loud breath, finally lowering his gaze as he rubs at his temples. “Listen. I’m not willing to stay in Uru’baen for an extended time for any reason, and this is no exception. My short visits here are already taxing- prolonging them would become unbearable, and Nasuada, you’re asking for months. I’m sorry, I simply can’t do this for you.”

It’s Nasuada’s turn to scowl. “That’s all there is to it?”

If I can be real for a second - what turned me off from BNHA/MHA wasn't even the series itself (though it def has some things I don't care for in the later half) but the fucking real life League of Villains stans who just CONSTANTLY blasted the hero side and acted like LoV were totally in the right just because they have tragic back stories where they were abused or failed by society (it started getting truly unbearable when Hawks killed Twice, like jesus. I will forever argue his actions were entirely valid, if misguided, given the information he had).

Because... it's literally the gif.

The who damn point was that they had valid points, that hero society was fucked up and failing the people who needed help the most... but LoV were not against MURDERING GENUINELY INNOCENT PEOPLE and thus had to be fucking STOPPED. They didn't just kill heros, they'd kill civilians as well. They were actively continuing the cycle that hurt them, just for the other half of society. Their actions weren't about making everyone equal, it was about making others suffer and putting themselves at the top.

Their reasons being understandable and sad DON'T MAKE THEM THE TRUE GOOD GUYS. Just like the heroes weren't purely the good guys because they fought bad guys (fuck Endeavor, all my homies hate Endeavor). It was gray vs gray, not black vs white. Both sides had something they needed to learn or understand, and change as a result of.

I just got so sick of wading through 'LoV is right!' 'Kill Hawks/All Might/etc.' 'All Mights a bad guy' rhetoric, I couldn't enjoy MHA.

Fitz is going THROUGH it watching Duitiful be abused for the singlular crime of being uneducated. If anyone actually cared about the fucking Farseer children beyond what they can do for the Six Duchies then they would've stoppped pretending like the entire bloodline isn't drenched in Skill and Wit like GUYS.

Time and time again we're shown that neglecting these truths leads to so much harm and yet everyone is like "haha what if it continued anyway"

4. What was your first Warden (gender/class/race/personality)?

Hyacinth Tabris! Male/Rogue/City Elf, outwardly he presents himself as a very diplomatic and reasonable guy, and does genuinely try to figure out what is going to have the best outcome for everyone when making decisions. Inwardly though he’s just like riding the high of not being dead when he should have died like five times over at this point and is full of shitty jokes that he does not actually say out loud.

5. What was your first Hawke like (gender/class/temperament)?

Atlas Hawke! Male/Mage/Purple This deeply sad man uses a mask of humor to pretend he isn’t constantly falling apart at the seams! I love Hawke, DA2 is definitely my favorite DA game so far, I love the inevitable doomed tragedy of the Hawke family and also just like Kirkwall as a whole and just. Yeah. Favorite DA game, easily. 

6. First Inquisitor (gender/class/race/personality)?

Qwyllian Adaar! Female/Warrior/Qunari she’s pretty pragmatic and just doing her best to make the decisions that will cause the least damage and work out best for everyone in the long run. Qwyllian isn’t interested in returning things to the status quo and putting everything back the way it was beforehand, rather she’s doing her best to use her power and influence as inquisitor to make things better for the common people of Thedas as much as she can. (In my personal internal canon she’s got my other inquisitor, Thyrias Lavellan, with her, and he’s fairly knowledgeable when it comes to Orlesian politics and certain things that aren’t mentioned in the game but are uhhh. Incredibly Relevant especially when it comes to Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts (Fuck Celene, all my homies hate Celene)) 

7. Favorite DA:O backstory?

Tbh so far the only one I’ve played thru is Tabris so I am not qualified to pick a favorite yet.

8. Preferred class overall?

Rogue! I love being a sneaky little guy that can pick locks

9. Do you tend to play male or female characters most?

Definitely guys whoops- My first Inquisitor was a woman though and as soon as I started moving her around things felt so wrong because the walk/run animation was very like? Dainty? And the body language felt all wrong for how I had envisioned the character- I still finished the playthrough with her, but yeah when you make a character to be a butch lesbian with a massive sword and then the walk cycle animation looks like it was meant for a dainty fairy of a woman that goes prancing and traipsing through flower meadows it just feels… wrong. And just yeah the way the like body language animations are done for female characters in the dragon age games do not tend to jive well with the types of characters I enjoy making. Very excited to be able to make a nonbinary character in Veilguard tho.

Hey Lit, is it weird that I’m scared art will die due to AI art? I see that sentiment tossed around a lot and it’s freaking me out just a smidge, especially since I just started considering making my own webcomic.

Art's not going to die.

What will happen is that certain facets of creative markets (art, writing) will see a glut of AI-generated projects. However, since Tech Bros are more focused on suckling the teat of 'New is Better', they won't improve them and just stay stagnant at this state of 'peck and steal from human artists'. After a while, consumers will get tired of it and start backlashing (not buying into it, reassessing AI Art as being toxic capitalism, etc).

The Tech Bros will then jump over to the next new thing they can try and siphon any human element from: broadcasting, Vtubing, music (they'll probably finally find a way to break through the laws that are currently stopping them from doing to music what they've done to art), and others.

And the cycle will loop over and over. Because, as has been displayed time and time again with these people, every Tech Bro and Nepotism baby getting squeezed out from Silicon Valley has the phrase 'Fuck the average human being; All my homies HATE the average human being' tattooed on their eyelids.

Okay so, these are my ratings for the tracks on portals,

and I just want to preface this by saying these are only my opinions and yours are obviously allowed to differ from mine!/lhgen

DEATH: 7/10. Pretty solid, the music video looks cool, I like the huge mushroom. It's stuck in my head lol.

VOID: 8/10, also really like VOID. I relate to alot of the themes of it and just jejabduajeuwj VOID my beloved. My one gripe is the constant use of the same visualizer, but that isn't exclusive to VOID and is a thing through out the whole album.

TUNNEL VISION: 9/10. Really liked the lyrics, really liked how the word "portal" was in there, as sorta of an homage to the name of the album.

FAERIE SOIRÈE: 6.5/10. I liked it. It wasn't bad by any means, I just would've liked it more if maybe it was longer? I feel like if it was longer that would give it a chance to truly shine.

LIGHT SHOWER: 10/10. I love LIGHT SHOWER. It's on all my main playlists now. I love Its' sound, I love the lyrics, metaphors, message, even the title. This is one of my favorite songs Melanie has ever put out.

SPIDER WEB: 8/10. I like the metaphors, underlying message, and instrumental. I relate to SPIDER WEB alot, and for that it's earned its place as one of my favorites.

LEECHES: 7.5, if you R U looking 4 me now? By Jazmin Bean, you might like this since they have some themes in common. They don't share any sounds, just some themes. I like LEECHES, it's just not my favorite.

BATTLE OF THE LARYNX: 8.5. I really like the sound and lyrics, but it just didn't quite hit in all the right places, still a great song though!

THE CONTORTIONIST: 9/10. Just

Also the sound of bones crunching, liked that alot too, the instrumental wad great too,

I'm at a loss for words at how well the elements of this song compliment eachother

MOON CYCLE: 4/10. I straight up don't like MOON CYCLE, I don't know what it is about it, maybe certain lyrics? I don't know, I just don't like it.

NYMPHOLOGY: 10/10. All my homies are experts in N-Y-M-P-H-O-L-O-G-Y. It's just such a fun song and just twguejyshotfjssaaaaaaa

EVIL: 10/10, Really gives off like villan era vibes, like you're letting go of your harmful past and saying "fuck you" to those who hurt you. I also really love the sound and just general feel of it all and just

yeah, this is now a comfort song.

and finally,

WOMB: 8.5/10, really like the instrumental and the call back to DEATH at the end. It feels like the perfecr song to end the album off with.

My overall score for the album is an 8/10, it's not bad, it has the same level of quality as Crybaby and K-12, it just doesn't hit as well as I 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 believe it could.It certainly is different aesthetic wise, which isn't bad by any means, I personally actually like this aesthetic. Its' just not what were used to.

Did it have LOTS of problems? Yes. Do I care? No. Scott McCall is one of my favorite characters of all time. Derek Hale was a flop his entire life and I loved him for it. I legit have two arrow tattoos cause of this show dammit, lol.

Shameless (2011-2021) I'm ghetto white trash. I come from two lines of Slavs and American poor. I will always love it. Was it outlandish? Yeah. Did it show some real ass shit? Yeah. Did I cry at it more than once? Yeah. Did Ian and Mickey getting married heal my heart? No, but it was very nice to see. I legit live in my childhood home on the southside. I am a gay with bipolar. I am technically on probation right now. I don't think I need to say anymore.

OZ (1997-2003) I started watching this show way too young. It was the most ridiculous, dramatic, ain't shit, had no business show. And yet I still own the DVDs and made my best friend start watching it. She's mad as hell at it, but she agreed to watch it knowing she would be mad as hell. And she's now the one being like "fuck we can watch another season, I hate this fuckass show but I want to watch." A win is a win.

Generation Kill (2008) Yes, the American military complex is bad af. But this show is funny as fuck. It didn't hesitate to show these dudes are just regular ass dudes. There was no hero worship. My bestie and I still quote it to each other all the time. Plus the HBO War fandom was amazing back in the day. So many good edits and fics.

Queer As Folk (2000-2005) Okay this show did not hold up well at all. What with the, you know, main relationship that we all loved and rooted for being Brian (29) and Justin (17). But we didn't have anything else back then okay! I still love this show, but maturing is watching it and realizing Ben and Michael were the best couple, Melanie was never wrong and should have left Lindsay, Lindsay was bisexual and needed therapy to stop being dickmatized by her gay best friend she never got to sleep with because he's a gay man, Justin also needed therapy for so many reasons like so many, and Brian needed to like just stop just stop in general.  Also, it legit took 5 YEARS and Justin also almost being killed for Brian to say "I love you" and we all just celebrated that like it was the greatest thing despite it taking FIVE YEARS. Again, it was all we had. But I still love how it showed gay people having sex and enjoying it and not really much shame or whatever. And the "admit the truth, you love him" speech is something I STILL quote for my ships to this day. Like it was very "we're here, we're queer, get used to it" and that was AMAZING for 14 year old baby gay Clyde.

South Park (1997-Present) It's ain't shit to it's core. It's hilarious. It's still my humor. I've been watching since season 7. Sometimes I don't agree with the takes, but lots of times I do. And when it's not even trying to have a take it's just straight funny. When I'm in a low cycle, I put it on and can at least get some laughs, which is hard to do when I can't even get myself to shower and leave my house.

South of Nowhere (2005-2008) Okay. Listen. I'm a gay lady. I wasn’t really coming to terms with it in my teens, despite having a whole ass friend I was having sex with despite being like THIS MEANS NOTHING THIS IS NORMAL IT'S NORMAL TO GET NAKED WITH YOUR HOMIE RIGHT and then she moved and I gay panicked and didn't return her calls ever and ignored her on myspace, then this show came out and I was like ...oh. Oh I see. So yeah. The N had a show about a teenage lesbian realizing she was a lesbian cause she fell in love with her out bisexual friend. And then they had a relationship! And they stayed in it! And like they had sex and it was normal and fine and just yeah. This show meant a lot to me.

TharnType (2019-2021) Honestly I haven't had this show for very long personally but it is one of my favorites. I've watched it twice in less than a year. It's a hot ass mess. It's perfect. It's problematic and toxic and everything I love. Type is on that "I can hit my bitch" gay energy from back in the late-00s, which is bad don't get me wrong, but it's so delicious to watch because he's just so small, angry, and hopelessly in love. He really got the D one time ONE TIME and stayed gagging for it for the REST OF HIS LIFE. That is amazing. That is art. If you can't see how that's not the greatest thing you've ever seen, I'm sorry I can't help you. Techno remains my favorite friend in all of the BL shows I've watched now because everything he did, EVERYTHING, was gold. Lhong was BATSHIT INSANE and it was the greatest thing I've ever witnessed. My bestie has ZERO interest in any of my "gay Thai shows" but she has said she will watch this one with me because "it sounds ridiculous and it's just gonna make me mad, but you already have me watching OZ and that makes me mad so let's do it." Plus it's got "her boy" Mew. It's amazing. I'm making my straight bestie watch it and I am already so ready to watch her watch this show. I even liked the sequel. Type and Techno were really out here like IS HE CHEATING ON YOU WITH THIS GIRL like Tharn was not a whole ass homosexual who already had the convo back in college about trying pussy once and going ew. He really put on a fire fit to scare off a woman claiming his GAY man. Amazing. How could anyone hate this show. I don't understand. lol
