rook story time: 7 please? 💜

7. Rook being taught an important skill.

Carphira had been under the care of Viago for a few months now. Despite her natural talent in some areas like evasion, lock picking, pickpocketing, and gaining intel unnoticed almost every other talon saw a liability for their house. Viago whether due to stubbornness or seeing more than even Heir had in her was convinced she'd make a fine crow. Teia was also interested in her but felt Viago would be a better fit.She wasn't going to complain as it meant not having to steal or scrounge for food. She sat cross-legged across from Viago more focused on his multiple venomous animals in their enclosures than his arguing with Teia. Today's lesson was on poison making. Here's hoping I do better than my first time crafting a poison. Her first attempt at making poison went horribly she'd made a lethal poison but had melted the glass container used to mix it slightly. Viago was quick to throw it out the room when it started making a hissing sound with sparks coming off of it. Still don't know how he expected a child to craft a poison. Carphira tilted her head listening to the debate over if adder's kiss or quiet death was more appropriate to teach her. “Carphira join us we'll continue your lesson after lunch,” Viago said. Carphira stood up. Her dark red hair was in a ponytail. She followed behind both talons silently. The boots Viago recently given her were prone to making a clacking against the stone unless you deliberately made your steps land softer. She scanned ahead studying every door and hiding spot for a threat. Those almost two years on the street ingrained the habit.

“What’s a way to drop suspicion in public,” Teia asked.

“Disappearing into the shadows and weaponizing my age with a vendor or a unassuming person like a parent with kids. Particularly by asking if they've seen my parent teary eyed or asking for help finding an item on the list said parent sent me out for,” Carphira said confidently.

“See Viago she's a clever girl. Even the most determined spy would look at those big purple eyes filled with tears and think she's just a harmless kid.”

Viago made an annoyed exhale. Lunch was in the usual smaller dinning room instead of the one they used for meetings. It was filled with wood items and the occasional pop of red or purple. A small feast was spread out over the table. Carphira noticed Viago was standing against the wall instead of testing every dish. She narrowed her eyes slightly but kept her expression neutral. “Carphira part of being a fledgling is knowing what's safe to eat. You're to figure out which dishes are poisoned and explain your reason.” “So this is today's lesson got it.” The first item she investigated was the coffee items. The coffee based the silver stick test when she poured it into her mug. As did the milk. She studied the white sugar. Some the granules looked different in the crystal structure. Cyanide when in its crystal structure mimics white sugar while being undetectable until symptoms appear . “The sugar is poisoned with cyanide. The crystal structure is slightly different than sugar would be and is less uniform than the sugar crystals.” Viago didn't react more than rubbing his beard. The next two dishes were safe. A mixed berry salad was her next target. Let's see strawberries, blackberries, and something mimicking blueberries which can only be deadly nightshade berries. “There's deadly nightshade berries in the berry salad. They look like blueberries if you just glance at them.” Teia gave Viago a smirk. He was biting his lip slightly it would've been barely noticeable if she wasn't looking for micro-expressions or tells. Carphira hid how much this lesson scared her every time she turned to face Viago with her reasoning. With only two more items on the table to look at her stomach was twisting into a knot. The next item was a chicken pasta dish that wasn't poisoned. The final item was an aged manchego cheese. It being placed after the main dishes that were hot was already suspicious in itself. A semi soft cheese should be by the fruit in table placement. She studied it scrutinizing every detail. The wind was the wrong color instead of the usual yellow or beige color it was stark white. A nutty cheese can hide a nutty poison.

“The manchego is poisoned with arsenic. No Antivan worth their salt would ever place a semi soft cheese by hot dishes where it can melt. The rind should be a yellow or beige due to the plants used to wrap it. The pattern is slightly off because it isn't a true herringbone pattern but someone mimicking one. It's also a nutty cheese so a nutty poison wouldn't be noticed. Finally there's grey granules in the wedge cut from the wheel. They should've used yellow arsenic as it is more reactive and easier to hide in a cheese,” she said crossing her arms as she looked at Viago. He smiled proudly. Carphira relaxed just enough to release tension in her shoulders. While she trusted him to not let her die this was the first time he'd poisoned food and the stakes felted higher than they were. “You did good and were correct on all the poisons used. But you need to master being more subtle with your silver test a contract seeing that will get you killed.” “Told you she'd pass with flying colors. You don't survive as a thief without being observant. Carphira you did amazing especially on the cheese that's one I've seen full fledged crows fail on.” “I'll work on my slight of hand then. Thank you both.”

Carphira ate lunch in relative peace of mind. Except whenever she had took a sip of the coffee that was just black with cream. She managed to hide her disgust with every sip despite considering maybe the poisoned sugar would be worth the risk.

I would suggest you to try out Dragon Age Inquisition first. Cause sadly if you don't have an older gen PC both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 will crash on you... It's rough ><

So, I have 2 Rooks that I'm working on and writing about, all still in development, but I'll introduce one here!

For Vivia-

#12- What do they think about their room in the Lighthouse?

•Honestly, Vivia couldn't really care less about where she sleeps. She's used to sleeping anywhere so long as it has a couch or bed, so she's completely fine with the chaise lounge. She does wish the room was a little bigger, though, mainly with more places to hide her poisons she carries. As an Antivan Crow, she's used to having poisons accessible to her. Does she know she can get more chests and cabinets if she wants? Yes, but she's also very stubborn and will complain about it.

#24-What's a lie Rook's told before, and why?

•Oh, she's a big liar depending on who you ask (*cough* Viago *cough*). Her biggest lie would've been why she chose to attack Antaam the day she met Varric. She knew about the plans she would be fucking over for the Crows, but she still did it anyway. Her lie was that she had a contract out for a specific Antaam in that group, and it just got messy, but she knew that if she didn't strike, then she'd fail the contract. Viago saw right through that, he's the one who personally oversee's contracts. He knew she didn't have a contract on an Antaam. Later, when he pulled her aside to yell at her about it, she admitted she saw that if the Crows didn't act then, the risk of loosing the captives would've been too great, so she went against the Crows' orders. This led to her meeting Varric, and Viago seeing the danger Vivia would be in if she stayed, sent her to help Varric.

For Eliane (Introducing my next Rook OC!!) -

For some context before I answer on her end: She's a Veil Jumper! However, I want to note she does not share the same last name as Veilguard gives us. She's my Inquisitor's little sister, so her last name is Lavellan, and she's a mage!

#12- What do they think about their room in the Lighthouse?

•Eliane spent most of her life sleeping on bedrolls, in tents, and outside in the forest with her clan. Having a room all to herself unsettles her. She's grateful for the window that has an aquarium in it. It does help her feel at ease a bit, but still. The room personally feels cold compared to the forests. She's more than likely to be found in the conservatory with Harding rather than her room most nights. It's the closest thing she has to home, after all.

#24-What's a lie Rook's told before, and why?

•She rarely lied when she was growing up. It was hard to in the clan, she felt she had eyes always watching her. However, when her brother was sent to spy on the Conclave and they'd heard the news of its explosion, she needed to find some way to help and possibly find her brother. Eventually, during a ruin excursion when looking for supplies the clan could use, she came across a book about blood magic. She hid the book and didn't tell anyone about it, practicing its contents in secret. Eventually the keeper caught wind of the magical energies it was causing. They questioned all the mages in the camp on it, and Eliane lied about not knowing what it was. She also promised that she would never do blood magic, and agreed on its evil properties. However, she kept practicing, believing that it would be key in helping her brother. She didn't need to kill anyone, she found out she could use her own blood. No harm would be done in her eyes. The clan eventually found out, and she was cast out for it, leading her to venture north into Arlathan.

Ahh, I could just write on and on about them! Currently, I do not know if they exist in the same universe or not, but it could be an interesting idea!

The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses? ODESSA WOULD KICK HIS ASS IF THE FADE LET HER . she HATES him , despises how he talks down to her , absolutely abhors how he acts and how he speaks in twisted "truths" which in all actuality are lies . it does notttt help when she learns that he had manipulated her the whole time . any chance she got to take him down , she took . if anything , her disliking of solas just gets further and further into hatred territory . i dont think shes recovered from any of it ; truthfully , it makes her worse , and it makes her much less trusting . The Empress: What does family mean for Rook? its an odd word for her . her only blood relative she killed , the only adoptive relative she technically has are viago and teia , and the other crows are much too unstable for her to rely on to call "family" . i think family means people she can trust , can rely on , and can feel like coming home to . its more summed up in her actions ; sitting on the counter while bellara cooks , talking about her recent novel she read ; training with taash as they both get their anger out ; gardening with harding while they reminisce how the veilguard started with just the three of them ; helping neve out with one of her many cases , providing a different [assassin] angle to any of them ; sitting with davrin while he carves wood as they just talk about anything ; studying magic with emmrich , especially her interest in the undead / necromancy ; and being able to come back to lucanis , and being able to just deflate around him , being able to take off her masks and her smile and just relax without feeling like she needs to be the stapled leader . its things like that which make her friends her family .

Haleth is a veil jumper and was a dalish hunter before she joined them. So, she is adept with a bow and with daggers, though she prefers the bow the most.

13: What are their thoughts on killing? Is it a necessary evil or do they enjoy it?

Being a hunter who has to regularly kill game for food, she regards killing as a necessity most of the time. She used to offer a prayer to Andruil as she performed the coup de grâce on game. But that has since turned to a simple prayer of gratitude and apology to the animal she has hunted. With the enemies they are facing, she feels the most conflicted when it is Venatori or the Antaam because she still considers them to be people misled by their leaders. It's a complicated mess when she thinks about it. This leads to long nights of philosophical discussions with Lucanis, since he is the most likely person to relate to her dilemma.

14: What hobbies does your Rook have?

She loves to sing. She doesn't have the typical sweet voice of singers but there is a grounded beauty to her voice that manages to make both Lucanis and Spite calm down. And ever since Harding started turning her room into a literal green house, Haleth has made it her life's goal to find her all the rare plants she can find!

15: What NPCs do they like? Which one's do they dislike?

Haleth is Strife's pet, even if he would rather die than accept that! She also gets pretty close to Teia and Viago. Teia is already making plans for her marriage into House Dellamorte, much to Lucanis' embarrasment. She is also the president of "Antoine-&-Evka forever" fanclub that currently has Bellara, Manfred and herself as members. Davrin has categorically refused to take part in their meetings ever since she had asked him to whittle her favorite warden couple north of the Vimmark mountains in what he deems to be "an absolutely ridiculous pose".

As for NPCs she dislikes... well, let's just say she doesn't exactly love Mythal as they find her in the cross roads. She is also a little miffed that her genuine attempts at empathising with the woman ended up with her getting her small clothes in a twist and turning into a freaking dragon to fight her.

THIS IS WHY HE DOESN'T VISIT YOU, MYTHAL!

She does respect Morrigan though... She thinks Morrigan makes Mythal likeable.

the magician and the wheel of fortune for the tarot asks!

Thank you for the asks friend! These were fun to develop.

The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Rook. What made this moment stand out to you?

Liselath only gets involved with the Crows after her Dalish family is killed in a raid. She gets a pretty gnarly scar from this encounter, a long slash originating under her left ear and traveling down her neck to her right collarbone. She’s somewhat self conscious about it, because explaining how she got it inevitably means she has to relive how her clan was wiped out and she was thrust into the Crows somewhat unwillingly.

She does her best to cover it with high necklines but since it is somewhat large and apparent, she can’t help but notice when people stare at it.

Viago in particular has a habit of eyeing it, (he was there when she got it) which bothers her to no end.

I picked this moment because it results in a very present reminder of her past, a visual representation of a character’s trauma that she otherwise would never share.

Despite her best efforts, she can’t hide her (literal) battle scars from the day her old life ended, and I find it really interesting to give a “closed book” character such an apparent link to her trauma.

The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses?

Before meeting Solas in the fade, Liselath is pretty terrified of the idea of facing her people’s famed Dread Wolf. She’d grown up hearing stories about his betrayals and had adults use him as a sort of boogeyman to caution her against certain behaviors. But when she’s finally face to face with him, she’s surprised to see that he’s just your average (bald) elf. While definitely wary of anything he tells her, the fear she felt regarding him goes away rather quickly.

Throughout the story she stays distrustful of him, knowing his tendency to betray allies from Dalish stories and his recovered memories, but when he intervenes on her behalf against Elgar’nan she can’t help but feel a sort of camaraderie with him. So much so that the little switchero he pulls feels more like a desperate attempt to escape than a calculated betrayal. (She’s still pissed though)

If I had to simplify it, I’d describe it as a work relationship with a supervisor who you generally try to avoid due to his position but happens to come in clutch for you one time when you really need time off.

7. if they had to choose one person most important to them, who would that be?

I think Tyslinn would be pretty torn between Leliana and her sister. But, I think she feels Lel needs her more than her sister does. Her sister sort of made it, it's not that she doesn't need Tys anymore it's just they're in such different spheres it's hard to connect like they used to. Leliana and Tys have been through so much together and apart, she desperately wants to get back to her. To find a way to grow old together <3

Prefacing this really quick, I didn't stick Hehet in the fade b/c I think she is so so so attached to her friends lol. My girlie is simply not that girlie that appeared in inquisition. Her willingness to jump into stupid danger is unparalleled but, stupid death? Stupid stuck in the fade 10 years? no. Also the characterization? Crazy period.

Preface over, she loves her widdle brubber so much. The last thing she wants is to step on his toes anymore than she already does but she can't help it. He's the last blood family she has (other than. her uncle. I. guess.) so she goes and helps the wardens rebuild. She wants to help the cause in whatever little way she can in hopes that it helps him in some way. She loves Isabela and Varric so much, but they're both self sufficient little guys and she is NEVER going to see Carver as such -he hates it. she hates it too. She can't help it. I think if he learned that he was the most important person to her, he'd puke.

Hey? hello? Is this thing on? Solas. Jesus Christ. This is so embarrassing um. (I hate that egg). But it's true. Burim is so a little bit in love with all his friends but Solas was the first person that he felt a connection with in the inquisition. They became weird little besties in a way that they never really conveyed to other people. It was this mutual respect that was elevated a lot higher and stranger than either of them really... cared to acknowledge? Burim's best friend is Dorian. The love of his life is Bull. But I think narratively, Solas is so important and. unfortunately. Character wise. for my sweet sweet leetle mage.... He was as Solas so deeply important to Burim and then as Fen'Harel regrettably deeply important to the Inquisitor.

16. do they get sentimental about their weapons or armour?

Tyslinn takes incredible care of her amor and weapons. She maintains them religiously. Sentimentality wise, she still has a small knife that she stole when she was little. It was her first weapon, she never uses it now (she's a much heavier hitter and a little sloppy with knives nowadays) but it's a reminder of where she came from.

Hehet displays some of the family armor in the estate, but she feels weird wearing them herself. Like she hasn't earned them. She's. She's got some stuff to work out as always.

Burim tries to do his Vitaar the way his mom taught him every time. He's gotten pretty good at mimicing her technique! It's a subtle vitaar, only on the forehead and higher cheeks, but it works :)

The Lovers: Who is your Rook's most significant relationship within the Veilguard? How do they help Rook feel seen and understood? to be honest , i'd be lying if i said anyone else but lucanis . and its not just the fact that hes the only other crow , or their romance , but i think its just because he is the one who Gets Her . if that makes sense . odessa doesn't feel as though she has to Pretend around him , or that she has to hide what shes thinking and feeling . she can relax , she can just Exist and not have to stress about being a leader or having to be on the defense all the time . i dont rlly know howw to describe their relationship , but its the most important one to odessa ., The Chariot: How does Rook fight? What are their preferred abilities and damage type? so odessa's a duelist ; she is always in the scrap of the fight , shes usually drenched in blood [whether its her own or her enemies is another story] . she doesnt parry , she dodges [is it because i never use parry . maybe .] and she makes sure she takes hits aimed for her companions . her favorite moves vary between 'a thousand cuts' , 'murder of crows' , and 'hurricane of blades' . anything that she can use to show off basically . she uses necrotic damage , any other type she stays away from since necrotic is her wheelhouse . if its because the green reminds her of the poisons she used to watch viago concoct , she wont say . she'd probably lie about it .

12, 16, 19 for dragon age asks!

12. What's one thing you're hoping we DON'T see in this next game?

Hm... I don't really know for sure? I don't have a ton of expectations or hopes for where the story goes. I do hope that there's not going to be a sort of... 'the elves were the bad guys all along' sort of vibe to the story, if that makes sense? I also really hope the maps will be a lot more trimmed down and more driven towards the game objectives. I'm not a HUGE fan of giant, search in any direction open world games. They tend to get overwhelming for me quite quickly -- things like BOTW become really hard for me to finish for that reason. From what I've understood when it comes to game discussions so far, it looks like we won't have that? So I'm hopeful.

16. What's one crack theory you subscribe to (yours or someone else's)?

Hmmm... I don't know! I don't think any of them are really that much of a crack theory vs just plausible theories based on lore we've already learned in-game. For example, I really enjoy Bunabi's theorizing about Dumat!

19. Are you planning to replay any of the previous games, watch Dragon Age: Absolution, or read any of the books/comics/short stories, or are there other games you want to play in the meantime?

I'm currently playing a new run of Inquisition, ahaha! I think I started it the same day the DA4 gameplay trailer dropped. I do think I'll take a mosey through some of the short stories too during the wait.
