FTTA: High-Performance Solution for Integrated Optical Fiber and 5G Networks
There is a huge demand for high-speed data transfers in today’s mobile telecommunications networks. FTTA (Fiber-to-the-Antenna) is an essential element of 5G networks and ensures reliable, robust, and future-proof installation, improves user experience and reduces costs. This article helps you to understand FTTA.
What is FTTA?
FTTA is a broadband network architecture to connect the building baseband unit (BBU) to the remote radio unit (RRU) at the top of the tower by using optical fibers to replace all or part of the coaxial network. FTTA can reduce the loss of signal power. And up to 20km's maximum transmission distance helps realize centralized placement of base stations (BS) in lower-cost telecommunication rooms and more flexible and modularized network planning.
FTTA Solution
FTTA solution reduces installation time and saves the cost of installation and maintenance. FTTA solution includes outdoor optic fibers, PDLC outdoor waterproof patch cords, terminal boxes, etc.
Benefits of FTTA
Perhaps the most benefit of FTTA stems from the physical content of the cable itself. The smaller diameter and lighter weight allow many fiber optic cables to occupy the same amount of space as a single coax cable. Because cellular towers are naturally subject to the elements, the physical size and properties of optical cabling are much less susceptible to damage from gusts of wind.
Other benefits of FTTA relate to the shift from analog to digital. Due to signal losses, the coax cable limited the distance between the antenna and the base station to as low as around 100m. Optical cabling can span up to 20 km with minimal losses.
FTTA provides improved energy consumption and signal integrity. Tower amplifiers are no longer required to combat the inherent noise floor of extended coax runs. The cooling of power amplifiers through air conditioning in a traditional base unit is replaced by ambient air cooling of the RRH, which significantly reduces the electrical power consumption of the system.
FTTA also provides flexible deployment, reduced complexity, saves installation time and space on the tower, lower investment, and high reliability.
Typical FTTA Scenario
Fiber optic networks aim to perform high-speed, error-free data transmission. Adequate testing during each phase of the network deployment guarantees that products meet specifications. It minimizes costly and time-consuming troubleshooting efforts, including locating dirty/damaged connectors, questionable splices, and other faulty components before they disrupt service.
One of the most crucial factors in ensuring proper transmission is controlling power loss in the network against the link loss-budget specifications from the network design recommendation, which establishes a total end-to-end loss budget with sufficient margin while reducing back reflection to a minimum.
What is the Future of FTTA?
Consumer demand and technological advancement will continue to challenge the broadband infrastructure and necessitate more innovation. As incremental improvements such as active antennas integrated with the RRH to eliminate the need for all coax, small cell technology, and tower construction continues to evolve, it is safe to assume the future of FTTA may hold a few more surprises.
5G network provides speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, which requires more small cell sites/DAS and improvements in conventional antenna tower bandwidth. Fiber optics will continue to provide the lifeblood to this ever-evolving network because only fiber can support the backhaul of these small cell sites produced by this intense proliferation of traffic.
Conclusion
FTTA is an innovative, flexible, and future-oriented way to install the network. It secures your network connectivity today and in the future.

5G Satellite Connectivity
This approach promises to supply satellite connections to millions of smartphone customers through their existing phones – meaning, no new device is necessary. Besides consumer needs, agricultural, industrial and scientific applications can also benefit from this kind of coverage. This is a service delivered via Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), but requires the use of terrestrial spectrum, involving partnerships with existing operators or applying for a new spectrum licence. The alternative approach is to use only satellite spectrum (e.g. Globalstar, Iridium), which requires new devices. In both cases, the technology is in its infancy and the real value to users vs. cost will determine which or both will become prominent.

High-Performance Fiber Optic Cables for the FTTH Access Network Application
With the continuous development of FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) network construction, there will be more and more new varieties of fiber optic cables for the FTTH access network application. This article will discuss the three types of fiber optic cables for FTTH in detail.
Fiber Optic Cables for FTTH Access Network
FTTH is an access network architecture that allows deploying xPON technology to provide high speeds of Internet access downstream (from the network to the end-user) and upstream (from the user to the network) over optical fiber from the operator’s switching equipment to an individual home. The main fiber optic cables implemented to build up the FTTH access network are the FTTH feeder cable, FTTH distribution cable, and FTTH drop cable.
FTTH Feeder Cable
FTTH feeder cable, such as stranded loose tube light-armored cable connects the central office/hut to the fiber distribution hub (FDH). It is ideal for duct and aerial installations. This cable has good mechanical and temperature performance, high hydrolysis resistance, high strength loose tube, good crush resistance and flexibility, high tensile strength ensured by steel wire, and good moisture-proof ensured by PSP (steel tape).
Stranded loose tube light-armored cable construction is that 250um fibers are positioned in a loose tube which is made of high modulus plastic and filled with a water-resistant filling compound; A steel wire, sometimes sheathed with polyethylene (PE) for cable with high fiber count, locates in the center of core as a metallic strength member; Tubes are stranded around the strength member into a compact and circular cable core; The PSP is longitudinally applied over the cable core which is filled with the filling compound to protect it from water ingress; The cable is completed with a PE sheath.
FTTH Distribution Cable
FTTH distribution cable connects the FDH to the fiber access termination (FAT). FTTH distribution cable, such as indoor distribution cable uses φ900um tight buffer fibers as an optical communication medium and aramid yarn strength member. It is compliant with a PVC or LSZH jacket. Generally, FTTH distribution cable is available in fiber counts ranging from 2 to 144 fibers. It has excellent stripping performance of tight buffer fiber, good tensile strength, and small size. FTTH distribution cable is used in indoor /outdoor and backbone cable distribution in building applications.
FTTH Drop Cable
FTTH drop cable is used between the fiber terminal and the building or home. It is ideal for aerial, direct buried, and ducted installations. FTTH drop cable has good crush resistance ensured by parallel strength member, good tensile strength ensured by single steel wire, low smoke, small diameter, zero halogen sheath, simple structure, lightweight, and high practicability.
FTTH drop cable construction is that the optical fiber unit is positioned in the center. Two parallel steel wire strength members are placed at the two sides; A steel wire as the additional strength member is also applied. The cable is completed with an LSZH sheath.
Things to Consider When Choosing Fiber Optic Cables for FTTH Access Network
When choosing the three fiber optic cables for the FTTH access network, there are some general elements that you should pay attention to that influence the method of cable deployment.
Type of FTTH Architecture: The FTTH architecture implemented will influence the data rate and the optical power budget, which will affect the choice of fiber optic cable for the FTTH access network.
Fiber Type of Existing Network: If an existing network is expanded, you must add hardware that can integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure.
Installation Environment: No matter the indoor or outdoor applications, there are always different environments where the cable will be installed. For instance, in rugged spaces where your cable may suffer damage, such as basements or in conduits sharing space with electrical or other wirings, you may choose a rugged sheathed cable that is flexible and crush resistant.
Conclusion
FTTH allows a fiber optic cable to be laid from the provider’s equipment directly to the user’s home. Choosing the correct fiber optic cables for FTTH access networks will directly affect network reliability, operational flexibility, and the economics of FTTH deployment.

FIBER OPTIC SOLUTION FOR FTTH
FTTH
Optical fiber household (FTTP), also known as fiber-to-house (FTTH), refers to a broadband telecommunications system. It is based on optical cables and adopts multiple high-end services such as telephone triple playback, broadband Internet and television to households or enterprises. Optical fiber communication is widely used as information transmission media with its unique anti-interference, light weight, and large capacity. It is the most economical and effective to use existing transmission lines.
FTTH
Role Of FTTH Network
Transmission Speed of Optical Fibers
The transmission speed of optical fibers has absolute advantages in response speed in the network. The optical fiber Internet FTTH and ordinary broadband Internet ADSL are two different Internet methods. The biggest difference between the two is that the transmission medium is different. The optical fiber Internet access is transmitted by the optical signal, and the ordinary broadband Internet access is the transmission of weak electricity signals. Therefore, the response speed of the optical fiber Internet will be much faster than that of ordinary broad band Internet access.
Transmission Medium
Due to the influence of the transmission medium, the theory of the highest bandwidth value of ordinary broadband ADSL is around 8M. The maximum bandwidth value of optical fiber broadband can be very high, and the 100M used in households is now popular. The enterprise type is 1000m or higher.
Optical Fiber Internet
Optical fiber Internet is dual-channel and ordinary broadband is one-way. Usually we involve two aspects of two broadband during the Internet, upward and network downward. If you use ordinary broadband (ADSL) when uploading files, it will also be affected. This is the one-way decision of ordinary broadband (ADSL). The advantage of the optical fiber Internet (dedicated line access) is that when you upload or download, the other party will not be affected. Of course, when the bandwidth is 1M-2M, the advantages of optical fiber and ordinary ADSL broadband are not obvious. When the bandwidth is increased to 4M or higher, the advantages of fast fiber speed can be clearly reflected.
