Burning of the silmai is an annual tradition found in some western slomen groups. While not all these groups burn the same symbolic beings or do it for the same reasons, the tradition is very recognizable.

In some places, it's simply burning cloth/dry plant figures and singing, others have it more interactive. One variety dedicates this event to a yearly "regret cleansing".

Tokens are made as a preparation for the event. Slomen either make their own or get community-made ones to symbolize a deed or aspect of themselves they want to burn away for the new year. This variety often uses edible materials to build its "simlais" (demon sin suckers, possessors of witches) like hard wet roots covered in heat-resistant coating).

When the fire is over or the fire masters decide, the simlais are taken down and brave men try eating it to show resistance and their ability to carry the burdens of the community (they only eat it if there's anything left).

Simple SIM breakout 📱🛠️

It's a new year! Time to take on moooore projects! Maybe we'll replace the FONA family with LTE modules this year. The First thing we need to do is get a good SIM card holder. We don't have a breakout for one already, so we're just going to whip this one up so we have it ready for when we need to prototype. We can put it in the shop, too.

Got Amelia's LTE. She was doing a fundraiser carwash when we used volunteered and then we got distracted, over used the liquid soap and messed up.

Maybe it's confirmation bias, or the conspiracy worms getting into my brain, but I feel like 5G is such an unreliable technology. Like, there are times when my phone has full bars 5G, and shit will just immediately fail to load. It won't even try. I never had that issue on LTE, especially at the rate I see it with 5G. LTE just worked, and for some reason, 5G is so spotty and inconsistent.

Kein Zug wird kommen

In der kleinen Stadt gab es am Bahnhof bis vor einigen Jahren einen Bäcker. Und einen Kiosk, der neben Zeitschriften und Snacks auch einen Fahrkartenschalter hatte, mit einem echten Menschen in Bahnpersonal-Uniform und Bahnpersonal-Mütze, der auch Fahrplanauskünfte geben konnte und Fahrkarten verkaufte. Dann wurde viele Monate lang umgebaut, es ist klar, dass die Bahn finanziell so mit dem Rücken an der Wand steht, dass sie es sich nicht leisten kann, überall Personal vorzuhalten.

Und heute fahre ich also wieder Zug und sehe das Ergebnis des Umbaus:

Um das Positive vorweg zu stellen: Es ist sauber.

Statt eines Bäckers und eines Kiosks mit Fahrkartenschalter nun also eine Reihe Snack-Automaten.

Geschmackvoll mit etwas Grün verziert. Außerdem ein Kaffee-Automat. Und, gegenüber von den Snack-Automaten, ein weiterer Automat wie man ihn vielleicht von Jahrmärkten kennt. Er verspricht den Verkauf von “Multimedia Mystery Boxen”. Wenn es einem gelingt, mit dem Greifer eine solche "Multimedia Mystery" Tüte zu greifen.

Der Mystery-Medien-Automat blinkt und dudelt vor sich hin. Sitzgelegenheiten gibt es keine mehr. Vielleicht werden ja noch welche aufgebaut?

Am Snack-Automaten kann ich immerhin eine Tüte Fruchtgummi erwerben. Und diese mit Karte bezahlen, was mich ehrlich positiv überrascht. Der Kaffee-Automat ist bereits defekt.

Dem Mystery-Medien-Tüten-Automaten gebe ich wenige Wochen, bis er vermutlich Opfer von Vandalismus wird; mal schauen, in ein paar Monaten bin ich wieder hier und werde meine Prognose prüfen.

Ich will nicht zu streng urteilen, wie gesagt, ich verstehe es ja auch, dass nicht überall Personal … aber während ich auf meinen Zug warte, wird meine Befürchtung einer Abwärtsspirale noch von der Anzeige in der Bahn-App bestätigt:

Nun ja. Um zum Abschluss noch etwas Positives und Versöhnliches zu schreiben: LTE, auf dem Screenshot deutlich zu sehen! Es ist nämlich gar nicht mehr Edgingen. Und vor dem Bahnhof gibt es einen wunderschönen Park mit Springbrunnen, an dem ich sitzen und ��� mit einer Tüte Fruchtgummi und mobilem Internet! – auf den nächsten Zug warten und diesen Beitrag schreiben kann.
