Outsiders Club: Houston Outlaws
As a fan of Dallas Fuel, I am downright terrified of the Houston Outlaws. Sporting a roster of hungry players with plenty of talent, Houston have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The Outlaws feature players from FNRGFE, LG Evil, Faze Clan, Team Gigantii and Cloud 9. Starting with FNRGFE and then adding to their already solid roster, Optic gaming look to take a iron grip on Texas esports fans.
Houston’s DPS roster are a collection of young, promising players. Clockwork, Mendokusaii, Linkzr, and Jake make up the damage roster. I simply cannot understate the talent of these four young men. Clockwork came to public eye during his time in Team Fortress 2 before transitioning to Overwatch. Players in both communities consider Clockwork to be one of the best aiming players in esports. Showing a hitscan versatility and strength that few can match, Clockwork has show absolutely outstanding performances on Tracer, McCree, Soldier 76 and Reaper. His calm persona and strong teamwork skills make him an ideal core DPS player. Troublesome, that’s how many enemy players would describe Mendokusaii. Mendo has a hero pool that’s too deep to even list, from DPS to off tanks to supports, there’s very little that mendo can’t do. Mendo hails from the classic Cloud 9 roster where he played DPS alongside Surefour. Showing impressive performances on both hitscan and projectile, mendo had been keeping busy with PUG scrims since the disbanding of Cloud 9. Grinding the competitive ladder on his live stream has filled his time and maintained his skills while waiting for the league to start. Linkzr made a name for himself with Team Gigantii during Overwatch Contenders season 1 by being an absolute nightmare for enemy supports. Linkzr’s genji is absolutely world class, his game sense on the hero paired with strong mechanical skill makes him a solid addition for Outlaws. Last but not least is Jake, who I consider to be the most promising player in Overwatch League. Jake has a solid core set of projectile and hitscan heroes. Showing solid performances with both LG Evil and team USA, Jake shows strong mechanical talent on Pharah, Soldier 76,Genji, and Junkrat. I feel Jake’s downfall at the moment is his game sense, at times he has questionable use of his ultimate abilities particularly on Soldier 76. While this may be an issue at the moment, the maturity and drive for improvement Jake shows gives me confidence that his time with Outlaws will spur massive improvements. Jake has the makings to be an absolute all-star in the league.
Outlaws feature a tank core that is tried and true in Muma, SPREE, Coolmatt69. It can be said that without Muma, Outlaws roster wouldn’t exist. Muma brought together the core players from Fnatic, NRG, and Galeforcd Esports that became FNRGFE. Muma’s cheery personality and leadership are matched only by his tank skills. Muma is well known across the community for his Winston play. Muma’s game sense and positioning on Winston are among some of the best, he knows exactly where he needs to be in any given engagement. Muma’s Reinhardt has been seen more as we enter a meta where Rein is far more viable, his positioning and shield usage are superb. Coolmatt69 does much to live up to his name. Cool barely describes him, the guy is always under control and knows how to bring life to the team. Flame once said that he knew he wanted coolmatt then built the team around him just because he knew Matt was notoriously easy to get along with. Paired with Matt’s great personality is his equally great off tank skills. On heroes like Dva, Zarya and Roadhog, Matt can arguably carry a team. He knows when to be protecting his backline and when to be on the prowl for kills. SPREE rose to popularity through his Zarya play and it’s absolutely one of the best in the game. During his time with Faze Clan he progressed his off tank play picking up a solid set of skills on Roadhog and Dva.
Tanks and DPS can’t do their job without supports and Outlaws spared no expenses on theirs. Rawkus, Bani and Boink make up the support roster for Outlaws. There’s so much to be said about Rawkus, one of the most recognizable faces on the game, Rawkus is one of the most flexible supports as well. A resume featuring extended tours of duty on Ana, Zenyatta, and Mercy make Rawkus an absolute much pick for the league. Add to that resume the fact that he played support for one of the most deadly DPS duos in Overwatch, ShadowBurn and Carpe, Rawkus brings exceptional depth to Outlaws. Next up is Bani who remains with his FNRG teammates. Playing support throughout contenders on Zenyatta and especially Mercy gives Bani a strong game sense that not all supports possess. Bani’s Mercy is especially important in a meta in which Mercy is unbelievably important. Last but not least is Boink. Boink has been playing Lucio for a long time, he’s developed a fantastic set of skills on the hero. Boink has a great sense for when to engage or disengage, when to be with the dive and when to peel for his main support. A good Lucio player can be the cornerstone of a team and Boink is up there with the best of them.
Clockwork(DPS): Mr.Hitscan, good aim, workhorse DPS, insanely consistent www.twitch.tv/clockwork
Mendokusaii(DPS): Weeb, has the power of God and anime on his side, variety DPS twitch.tv/mendokusaii
Linkzr(DPS): EU ninja, Genji™, can absolutely hard carry when necessary twitch.tv/linkzr
Jake(DPS): USA, potential, a player to watch twitch.tv/jake_overwatch
Muma(Tank): Don't mind me I'm just celebrating Muma pride month, Winston god twitch.tv/muma
Coolmatt69(Tank): Baby Dva main btw, top 5 off tanks in NA, the core of the team twitch.tv/coolmatt69
SPREE(Tank): Been playing/god tier at Zarya for a long time twitch.tv/spreeow
Rawkus (Support): Hair™, yeezys, support player through and through twitch.tv/itsrawkus
Bani(Support): Flexible support, good pairing of game sense and mechanical skill twitch.tv/baniow
Boink(Support): Great Lucio player, cornerstone of the dive twitch.tv/forceboink
As a Dallas fan, this roster is intimidating. They have the attitude and capability to be one of the main contenders on Overwatch League. Houston should be proud of this team and stand behind it. Just saying though, 7/10 of their players got knocked out of contenders by Team Envy. I'm excited for the Houston/Dallas rivalry between the green wall and the blue flame.

Fan Perspective of a Valiant Collapse
(Disclaimer: I'm just a fan looking in from the outside. Yes, my opinions can be wrong. Also I apologize for any typos. Its taking me 3 hours to write this on a phone and I am the angriest person about it.)
I really want to dive into this. Dive as hard as possible. Completely lose my sight line with my support backline while we both die separated from each other. Rude statements about the Valiants tank play aside lets start from the beginning.
The team was called sodipop and it would later put 3 players into the OWL under the Immortals org. Agilities, Grimreality, and Nomy. Verbo took over the Lucio role not long after the name change. Immortals fielded a roster of Agilities, Verbo, Grimreality, Nomy, Hyped and Aythen. Hyped was a former hearthstone player turned overwatch pro. There coach would also go onto coach Fnrgfe and is currently coaching the Philadelphia Fusion contenders team. Hyped is currently unknown to me and Aythen was playing on a contenders roster till he had a family emergency and had to leave the country.
Before I get into what happens next with the team and this roster I would like to take this time acknowledge Noah Whinston's commitment to development. His commitment to building for the future and not just right now.
The core roster and its future iterations have already been thru at least 5 different head coaches that I know of. 3 different coaches in the owl and multiple changes pre owl.
(Shoutout to Chance)
Ask any sports fan about the problems of developing talent under multiple coaching changes. It hurts the players the most.
I really want to talk about pre contenders zero overwatch. Triple DPS Rogue, Dafran not banned from overwatch, baby face Effect being discovered. And Immortals deciding to gut a 3rd of its roster and add 3 korean players right before the tournament started.
Nomy and Aythen were released into the wild. Nomy is the kind of person who hates playing this game not at the highest level. He personally needs to be at a pro level to enjoy this game. Aythen disappeared for a bit and I was honestly surprised (and extremely proud) to see him make his way back to the scene.
Fate, Envy, and Kariv are added to the roster. Fate came to the team already a mechanically gifted winston player. Kariv came with his top tier aim. Envy fell flat on his face. I know many people know Envy in his current state of top tier Dva/flex player. But when he firsr started with Imt they lost every game with him. Hyped shouldered most the load of the load till he was benched for Envy. Just because they wanted to develop Envy along side of Fate.
I understand the youth movement in owl roster decisions. Teams like the San Francisco Shock have been very vocal about bringing in younger players. I believe Hyped was dumped to bring a player in with more potential and that could fit Fate's playstyle more.
Kariv.... So mechanically gifted that he played most of stage 2 as dps. Most absent minded zen player I've ever seen when getting dove but still amazing at what he does.
I could write a book on what I don't like about Fate. Easily comparable to tanks like Fissure and Xqc.
Fate is an extremely gifted winston player. But has gained a glaring and growing problem in owl. He has become the shot caller. The in game leader. The guy who calls for a dive around the corner, dives, dies because his supports can't see him, supports die because they were counter dove. Fate you have been scouted and figured out. Every support backline pulls you away from your team while they dive your supports. Your shot calling and play style is killing your team. It created a divide between unkoe and verbo. It caused Envy great stress. And forced Agilities to eat in n out. This will and has always been fixable and more a failure of your coaching staff than yourself.
1 head coach
Fired
Interim head coach
New head coacb hired
They talk about this dream of developing players alongside each other and growing a team. They starved half the roster on the bench and drowned half the roster in poorly coached games. All these resources and decisions devoted players like Fate. And the player they cut for him (Nomy) is only 2 spots back in the owl.
How do you develop?
How do you grow?
How do you move forward when you don't even coach half the roster.
I remember when Verbo first got a chance to play in stage 1. He mentioned he hadn't played any of the maps or had a chance to play with the team yet. How does that happen? How is so much time devoted to half the roster. Sometimes players need to sit down and watch someone else play there role.
I want to talk about Grimreality. He is honestly my favorite player (Muma of the Houston Outlaws is my 2nd favorite player). Grim was the first person to explain positioning and how roles worked together to win games. Grim had a reputation as a McCree one trick very early on. He picked up Tracer and soldier eventually but dropped McCree. His style was very safe and supportive of his team. It worked well as a counter balance to Agilities aggressive style. He was dropped from the starting lineup for an all world tracer (Soon). Himself along with other bench players have not been given a chance to even interact with the starters at an owl level.
They say doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
Why not build a contenders team to develop your players? Why not keep the same coaches?
Why are you constantly changing coaches and adding random players like your the New York Knicks of the overwatch league. Its not even wrong to do these things. Its wrong to talk about development and growth while doing the opposite.
Its not truthful and its not transparent.
I am a fan of the core. I doubted Fate, Envy, and Kariv. But they grew on me and got really good. They became part of the original core to me. Envy is gone. Unkoe, the player they brought in alongside of Soon is also gone. Hyped is gone. Aythen is gone. Nomy is gone. Most the people who made these decisions are gone.
I wish I could sit down with the entire Valiant org and just watch vods. I wish I could talk to Noah Whinston about consistency and patience in development of talent. I wish I could convince every one to step back and look at the problem from a different perspective.
I love all of you as players, coaches, staff, and owner.
But please.
Walk your talk.

yells forever about esports
I need to rewatch all of today's matches when I'm not half-dead. I was sleeping but somehow my subconscious woke me up just in time to catch Envy play. I have so many conflicting feelings and all of them are too intense for me to process properly Envy didn't take Faze very seriously after Eichenwalde which was a pity cuz Faze is a stellar team, definitely top three stuff, even if Eichenwalde was a steamroll. Taimou trying for an anti-air riptire having never tried to climb that wall before...embarrassing. Luckily it wasn't a disaster, but it was pretty poor judgment. Not a Taimou Positioning Moment but definitely #justtaimouthings And the picking Junkrat on 2cp, he must've gotten caught up in the moment like the dumbass he is, too excited about the new depth to his hero pool. At least he admits his mistake, even if the tweet wasn't particularly constructive. Poor Effect didn't have his best game either, pulse bombs weren't landing and he got picked several times. His movement was visibly less clean than it has been before. But it's ok Effect, not every game can be your best game. Effect is still the best Tracer and an amazing person so he has nothing to worry about. And he even got to show off even more of his hero pool! He's no one-trick like Soon. Envy as a team actually seems to have really wild mood swings that affect how well they play that day. Cuz obviously mechanically and tactically they are the best of the best, but they get in their own heads and stuff like X6 happens. Faze played well though, against anyone else less skilled and playing equally weirdly, they would've won decisively. I'm excited for what it means for Faze. I'm hoping they come out solidly in the top four for Contenders. Preferably #2 to Envy's #1 :) Immortals can be #3. Ideally FNRGFE is #4 but after losing two series it'll be really hard. Faze's performance against Envy, vs Immortals' performance against Envy, shows that Faze is definitely playing better, if not just straight up being better, than Immortals right now. ShaDowBurn and Carpe were doing excellent, very consistently quality DPS. But Envy still had an edge on them in some fights, just cuz they're Envy I guess. I'd say that not only does Ency equally good consistent DPS, they also are just capable of ridiculously clutch plays that are insane, like Chip's sleep dart on nano Shadowburn at the end of Gibraltar first round, and Taimou's midair helix on Shadowburn who almost had ult up second round. Or even back to Apex when Chips had that godlike Sombra play against Meta Athena where he survived in a situation he really shouldn't have. Stuff like that, where they clutch it out in hair-breadths and split seconds, puts them over the top. Unfortunately sometimes that edge fades and you get stuff like Hanamura XD I still really enjoyed the match, I'm absolutely delighted that Envyus can play successfully off-meta. No one else can or has even tried besides the occasional Rein/Zarya and Doomfist/McCree. I popped into the Immortals v Envision match and I just heard the casters say "looks like a mirror matchup" and remembered, huh, so not everyone flexes? I've been spoiled by Envy's creativity. I just hope Taimou's newfound depth of hero pool doesn't go to his head in the future >_> that was pretty bad. Just cuz you can flex doesn't mean you should~ From here, once I cool off I need to rewatch the vod and pay more attention to what Faze was doing. I was too focused on Envy while watching it live XD Too busy rooting and being nervous for Envy, I actually actively forgot it was poor ShaDowBurn and Rawkus and the rest of them down there on the field ; o ; sorry guys Anyways I didn't get enough sleep to handle this roiling stream of emotions goodbye PS Reinforce almost said "fuck" on stream and it was the actual funniest thing
#pro OW#Contenders is shaping up to be much more interesting than expected#goooo Envyus#the only ones who can defeat you are you so get ur heads in the damn game
