She’s standing in the corner again. The same sad look she’s had for years. She’s been with me since childhood. She used to be my best friend. My family says she’s not real. The doctors called her dangerous, said I needed to be medicated. She didn’t go away.

I used to play with her as a kid, but school put a stop to that. Bullying is very effective at making you conform. I missed her for a while, but she never reached out. Just looked sad I wasn’t with her.

As a teenager, I tried to kill her. She wouldn’t go away, always staring. Everyone said it was weird when I did things with her, so in a desire to fit in, I stabbed her. I cut out her heart. She didn’t react, now there’s just a still beating heart on the floor next to her, her chest bloody and open as she stares at me, a sad look on her face.

As an adult, I tried again. This time I poisoned her. Alcohol usually. Sometimes something else. She didn’t die though, she just got pale and sickly. Staring at me as I stumble through life.

This time I know how to get rid of her. So she stares at me in the corner of the graveyard, as I dig a hole. If I bury her, she can’t look at me. There are tears in her eyes. She knows what I’m doing. I have to be normal though, so she has to go away.

As I finish digging the hole, I drag the chest I brought over, and tip its contents in. As the dresses and makeup spill into the hole, my chest tightens, heart scarring over. This is for the best. No more fantasy for me. I must bury her. As I fill the hole back up, a coffin emerges from the dirt and swallows her whole before sinking into the ground. It fully submerges as I pack the dirt tight.

This is good. This is better. I look to the corner to make sure she’s gone. Her heart is still there. It’s still beating. It’ll stop eventually, when she suffocates. I know I’ll die too, but at least I’ll finally be normal.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?
