Am I the asshole for getting my grandma a headstone?

For context I (F33) do not get along with the paternal side of my family. My parent’s divorce was finalized in August of 2008. That side of the family ignored, downplayed or belittled issues that I had with my biological father, whom I have not had a personal relationship with since May 28, 2008.

My Grandma died January 2020. She had five children, four of whom have spouses, and I have nine cousins. Grandma’s death was really the final break with that side of the family, I hardly ever saw them. By summer of 2021 she still did not have a headstone, so I went ahead and had one made. Because of backups it was not done in time for it to be placed in 2021, it was finished February 2022, and placed May 2022. Obviously the family found out, and were very upset. In November 2022 I had a sit down with three of Grandma’s children and their spouses (my biological father was not there). It lasted about 3 hours, and a lot of issues were talked about, but nothing was resolved. I did apologize for upsetting them, as that was never my intention. I did not apologize for placing the headstone, because I’m not sorry. They said they were working on the headstone, it was being made, and would be placed in May 2023.

Basically, nothing was resolved at the sit down. As of writing this (July, 3, 2023) they still have not given grandma the headstone they claimed to care so much about, and mine is still there. Who is the asshole in this situation?

AITA for having my Minecraft main hand as the left hand?

I (F14) am the middle child. I have an older brother (M16) and a little sister (F2, don't ask why she's 12 years younger than me. She just spawned out of nowhere). As any normal teenager my age, I play video games. I play TWDG, Halo, SOD2, Roblox, and Minecraft. I play these games with my brother.

But I still feel terrible about that whole interaction. My mom (F33) said it was just playful banter and that the autism comment was internalized because we both were autistic (I didn't know I was autistic. Wow, Mom). My dad (M33) also agreed with my mom. I had no input from my sister.

AITA: My (F31) best friend (F33) got angry at me for not organizing her a bigger birthday celebration.

I've known my best friend for 10 years, we've been through a lot, we used to work together and now we don't anymore, so we only see each other for birthdays and celebrations, and we text each other as we need to, not everyday nor once a week, more like twice a month.

Usually on my birthdays she and our other best friend (M37) go all the way out to celebrate me. Now last year, we tried to organize for her a good birthday celebration, we went to have dinner at the beach and then to a kind of amusement park close to it (we're not from the US), it was expensive and supposed to be nice but it rained and the restaurant we were supposed to go was closed so we went to another one and basically I could tell she didn't like it. She didn't say anything except that she and her girlfriend didn't like to go out that much anymore because of drinking and driving, so like they felt more comfortable drinking at home. And that was her excuse for like, not having fun then.

So this year we planned a home party for her. We went all in with liquor and different cocktails, more expensive stuff that we usually don't do, snacks and everything, but due to convenience (her house being the biggest and having enough rooms for all of us to sleep in) we decided to throw her the party in her own house. I asked her and her gf if that was okay, if they liked the plan and she said yes, that she'd always welcome us gladly... it was supposed to be an opportunity to be stupid silly drunk without any of the risks or stress of doing it in a public place.

Fast forward to the very same day of the party... her girlfriend was in charge of getting some edibles for us to eat at the party and she tells me none of her suppliers has product available. I don't know anything about buying that kind of stuff, it's always their thing to get that for the group, so we tried a couple of options and basically we didn't have any weed for the night.

So she texted me asking, since we had no weed, if we had another plan for the night... I'm like ??? no??? we did have enough alcohol to get super wasted, so in my mind I was like: even tho it's sad we won't have weed, there's still everything else we had already purchased for the party.

She then sends me a 7 min voice note saying that she needed to be honest with me, that our friendship could survive this because we were both adults and I should be able to listen to this without it offending me, but basically she felt bad because she thought she deserved better than just a house party, in her own place where she's everyday... that all of our parties she did everything to make it special, and started naming examples of this, but that since last year she'd felt we didn't do the same for her. That last year we went to places she'd already been in, and this year we were doing the party at a house? when none of our celebrations were ever at our houses... and stuff like that.

She also mentioned that though it's true that she's been forgetting to get us christmas presents for the past two years (which is true) it's not fair for her to get this kind of celebration, when we are three people (me, my other friend and her gf) to divide expenses with...

So, AITA for not planning a bigger party for her? I genuinely thought that the house celebration was going to be good, I'd like something like that for my own bday party. I also feel like, if she felt like this she should've told me before, not the exact day of the party at noon. I feel like she only said this to make me feel bad and I'm still so angry, but when I've talked about it with people irl they only say that she should've mentioned it before... but they do think that her comments are valid, as in, she's right we should've done something bigger for her... so I'm genuinely asking 🙏🏽

The LGBT Aussie Paralympians competing in Paris

The 17th Summer Paralympics Games are underway in Paris. Among the competitors are many LGBT athletes including some from Australia.

According to Outsports, there will be 41 publicly out lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer athletes at the Paralympic Games.

Among that group, there are at least five Australian competitors from the LGBT community.

Nikki Ayers – Para Rowing

Nikki is competing at her second Paralympics in the sport of para rowing.

She wasn’t out publicly at the last Olympics, explaining to Outsports that her sport needs to do more to encourage people to be themselves.

“I identified as being gay within the sporting community, and the people who were close around me knew I was,” she says.

“But I wasn’t very open about it. As a sport, rowing is quite conservative, and it’s still learning how to be more inclusive.”

Nikki is the world champion in the mixed doubles scull with Jed Altschwagert and will be hoping to bring home gold for Australia.

Maria or “Maz” is competing in their second Paralympics. In the Tokyo 2020 games, they won a bronze medal in the women’s shot put F33 breaking an Australian and Oceania record.

They will be hoping to bring home another medal for Australia in the same event in Paris.

Anu Francis – Para Triathlon

Anu will be competing in her first Paralympics after just missing out in Tokyo.

She previously competed in rowing but her classification system found that she would have an advantage over her fellow competitors.

Undeterred, she switched to triathlon and qualified for Paris.

Anu is an ambassador for the Australian Institute of Sport’s Thrive with Pride Program and she hopes she can “utilize my experience as a gay athlete to be a positive role model for LGBTQIA+ individuals.”

Ben Weekes – Wheelchair Tennis

Ben will be competing in his sixth Paralympic Games after debuting in Athens 20 years ago.

Although out to many beforehand, he spoke about his sexuality in an article with the Australian Open website this year.

“For me, I don’t really have a big coming out story, because I have always been myself and I have never made a big deal of it because I always felt so comfortable,” he said.

“My partner Sam has come to a lot of tournaments in the past and everyone has just been so great about it, I’ve never felt the need to hide anything.

The Paralympics take place from August 28 to September 8 in Paris.
