The Chesapeake Bay stretches out under a vast blue sky, its waters calm and welcoming. Specks of distant boats dot the horizon, hinting at serene adventures on this brilliant day.

I was so happy to get to visit the last Maryland Fried Chicken in the north 13 years after the last time I got to eat at one!
Maryland Fried Chicken originated in - you guessed it - Florida. It was invented by a guy from - you guessed - Delaware. And at one point it was one of the most serious upstart contenders against KFC. I've written a lot about Maryland Fried Chicken before (check out the tag to read more), but the short version is that the company didn't end up making it past the 70s. A number of individual franchises have toughed it out on their own since then.
Imlay City, Michigan's MFC became the last one in the north after the closure of the Easton, PA, location in 2014. The Frisbee on the wall linked this store to an older location in Lapeer, Michigan, which may have been open as early as 1967 (seen in the postcard above). I ordered a two piece dark meat meal with mashed potatoes & homemade chips. The chicken was perfect, and definitely evoked strong memories of my experience eating MFC drumsticks growing up. The mashed potatoes, by contrast, were very different from how I was used to them. Imlay's MFC has a more homestyle mashed potatoes recipe than my old location did, and the taste was very different. I don't think my location used to sell chips, but the ones I got at Imlay were great!

It's Road Trip time. My first stop was in Maryland. Visiting te Antietam Battlefield. For a long time I was wanting to visit this historic spot, and decided that was about time to go!
