Day 6: Galra Allura
Tags: @loturaweek2024 Species swap, alien culture, Galran Empire, helping someone you dislike and hating it the whole time, deep seated propaganda/brainwashing, touch starvation
Read on AO3
Prince Lotor was an embarrassment to the Galra name and species. Everyone knew that. To even touch him was to risk being polluted by the filth that tainted his bloodline and made him soft, pathetic, vulnerable. To associate with him? Was to practically volunteer to join him at the bottom of the pecking order. He was alive only because he had half-inherited his father’s martial prowess (and how powerful was the mighty Emperor Zarkon, that even half his strength should best any Galra that challenged Lotor!) and because Galran custom forbade even Zarkon from ridding the universe of his own child.
Allura knew that.
Allura was a good, dutiful, honorable, hardworking Galra. She was proud, as all Galra were proud, she was fearsome, as all Galra were fearsome. She was cutthroat and coldhearted—and maybe that was a lie.
The smell of blood was not foreign to her. She’d spilled plenty of it, herself. His shouldn’t move her. It was good, she justified to herself, that she concerned herself with the wounds and wellbeings of other Galra, for Galra were all as one, united under their glorious emperor, and to uphold and uplift the Galra around her was to uphold the empire as a whole, she self-rationalized. But Lotor was only half Galra, his blood tainted with Altean genetics, she shouldn’t care if he bled, if he ached, if he hurt, if he gasped as he rolled himself onto his knees and hand, the other wrist too damaged to put his weight on.
Really, she would be doing him a favor just for walking by. If she just strode past him and the unconscious bodies strewn around him, hell, she should be concerned about them, not the one left standing (or, well, kneeling. Getting there).
…Maybe, since he was half Galra, it would be alright if she half-cared?
She didn’t ask or offer, simply walked up to him, got his good arm slung over her shoulders, and lifted. He growled at her, and she growled back, not exactly happy about this either (damn her soft heart! A Galra should be better!), but his anger settled into confusion when she merely pulled him to his feet.
“...To what do I owe the honor?”
“Can it,” she snarled. “Let’s just get you out of here before any of these fools wake up and try for a round two.”
Because yes, that was it, they were the fools. Everyone knew Prince Lotor inherited half the emperor’s strength, it was their fault for thinking that they could best even that.
As a group.
Against one man.
She grit her fangs. Life wasn’t fair. Of course Galra didn’t play fair. It wasn’t honorable, exactly, but she doubted this was an official challenge for anything. And how did a prince get picked on this much anyway!? It was embarrassing for him.
“I rather must admit, I had thought when you approached me you intended to finish what they’d started.”
“If you keep chatting so much, I just might,” she snapped, with less heat than she’d intended. The line of his arm across her armor was distracting (it was always distracting) (she had yet to shake off the childish need to be touched outside of battle. Shameful). It was distracting her. This was a distracting situation.
“...Thank you.”
“Please,” she muttered quietly, “don’t ever mention it.”
And, see, again, Allura was distracted, it was a distracting situation, she wasn’t thinking about where she was going, because she’d just finished her shift and had been heading back to her apartment, and in lieu of actually taking Lotor somewhere her body just. Finished the trek home.
She stopped in front of the door to her room, very clearly in one of the residential halls, very clearly embarrassed with herself, even with her downturned ears hidden by her helmet and her blush underneath her fur.
He laughed, damn him, a soft, breathy, barely-there sound. “And where, precisely, has my valiant savior taken me?” Lotor asked, teasing and very knowing and sounding quite amused, the bastard. She shoved him off of her into the wall.
“You know I’ve had about enough of your sass!” she snarled, fangs bared, and he laughed again, louder, though his eyes were sharp on her, treating her like a threat. Good. She was one.
“Forgive me,” Lotor said, still sounding amused, if cautious, “I’m afraid my mouth has played the culprit in many of my altercations. I just can’t seem to control it.”
“Perhaps you should learn.”
“Perhaps.”
She crossed her arms and huffed, then. Well. Conceded in looking away first. It bristled, to be the one to look away from Lotor, embarrassment of the Empire, but she could admit she was being just slightly ridiculous (she’d been the one to bring him here, after all), and even if he did take advantage of the deliberate show of weakness, she doubted he could do much against her, down a wrist and limping like that.
“Your breath seems caught enough,” she muttered, still turned away. “You can make your own way from here. I’m going to rest.”
She slammed her hand down on the ID pad and her door slid open for her, allowing her to storm in.
“Wait!” Lotor called, soft but urgent, and she stilled in the doorway, cocking her head to look at him and her lip lifted just enough to snarl with one fang.
“Please, at least tell me your name.”
“...Allura. Now go away.”
The door didn’t slam behind her, just neatly closed like it always did, and she found herself resenting the emotionless metal for its lack of force. Good riddance. She was supposed to be enjoying a varga or two of personal time before she slept and went back to work the next day. Not dealing with stupid princes and their stupid faces and their stupid injuries and their stupid, breathy, lilting laughs that sounded so soft and inviting and their stupid smug faces and stupid, stupid, stupid!!!
Her face burned as she stripped off her armor, flinging it roughly at the armor stand. Whatever! She hoped she never saw him again!!!
(Except she did, she did, she wanted to see him. Stupid. Pathetic. Weak Allura).

@void-tiger THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I admit it's not really well thought out especially the other reality part
With Veronica and Kuron, it's specifically related to my Post s8 au (here, here is where I talked specifically about their relationship and the tag is here). Right after Lance resurrected Kuron (and fell into coma) Veronica found him while she was looking Lance who wasn't exactly.....doing well for some time, and had kinda went awol on everyone. Veronica had known enough about the entire clone arc thing from Lance and Shiro to not be weirded out but doesn't think that Kuron is evil or even dangerous (the first time they met, Kuron was waking up delirious, slipped and knocked himself out) so after a chaotic hospital trip, some explanations and after some more time and various discoveries, Veronica offers Kuron to room with her.
Veronica and Kuron's relationship at first was rather messy. Vero does sympathize with Kuron's situation but with family issues and her own tendency to be more private/secretive she doesn't have the spoons to deal with him. And in return Kuron does understand and appreciates what Veronica is doing for him but he's also someone who was pretty much abandoned by almost everyone he cared for and was doomed to die in his own mind while someone else used his body, so isn't having a good time either. This would lead to a screaming match, a fight and eventual reconciliation.
i think at first Veronica and Kuron are trying to figure out what even happened to Lance and how to help him but eventually their search expands into a major plot mysteries and loose threads (for eg Lotor's entire deal, some old experimentation by galra with shiro clones (and possibly more Shiro clones who survived) and i am visiting my old hc about gradual exposure to quintessence turning humans into eldritch horrors and nature of quintessence being perceptional and cultural) (Kuron is immune from turning into one due to Haggar's research on humans and clones and Lance using said research as pretty much a blueprint. Veronica however isn't)
Overall i feel their relationship swings between a genuinely healthy friendship who also tend to get codependent and encourage each other's worst habits.
As for the Narti Allura and Lance brotp- Again it's not really well thought out, even less so then Vero and Kuron. In this au Allura is travelling through different realities to get to her own one (I have been debating about giving her amnesia and at first it sounded like a good idea, but right now I am not sure :/. Her powers are still a mess though and she will get crippling fear of death, I am not budging on that). One of these realities she visits is this one where due to a series of butterfly effects voltron team (the humans one) never really formed but did
This reality is lot similar but also quite different, some of these differences being- 1)War being delayed and Allura being sealed in cryopod much later as well as Lotor being older when his parents got corrupted. 2) Delay in war causing Honerva's memory to come back causing a rift in her and Zarkon relationship until they both are against each other (sometimes). 3) Honerva occasionally working with Lotor but it's a strained relationship and Lotor hates both his parents as well as anything to do with quintessence bs 4)Lance found the blue lion much sooner as a kid and then getting taken in by Lotor before he could reach Allura (and also being in vicinity of Honerva which yknow....not good) . 5) Allura was released some other wat sooner and found surviving Alteans and through them and other planets formed the coalition she's currently head of. 6) Narti was sent out to assassinate/take over Allura but didn't (they fought and then talk it out), after which she joined Lotor. She does get controlled by Honerva but wasn't killed. 7) Allura got the white lion before ending up in cryopod
The end ultimately leads to 'shadow zombie' apocalypse (which is kinda because of anti-quintessence thingy? Like it feeds on quintessence and is shadowy) a few years later which kills off Zarkon, Honerva, Lotor and a lot of the empire as well as much of the universe and the blue paladin 'died' (aka Lance just straight up fakes his own death and had nearly gotten away with no one knowing it too if weren't for meddling Narti), and with so many big players dead, Allura's coalition or rather The Council took charge in rehabilitation and fixing what's left (I do think it was lot more complicated than random zombie apocalypse, I feel like it was culmination of everything?? Sorry I am still trying to figure it out)
Lance and Allura meet through Narti, and it was all years ago and now they are Trying. The work is tiring, overwhelming, the present is better but also still bleak, there's a seemingly new incident everyday, all the people who survived and the societies that still exist only Just started to reach a stability and peace and it's fragile as shit and all three of them are Trying™ in spite of the trauma and pain and despair and everything. The apocalypse isn't a problem anymore but it did leave behind a lot of mess. These three pretty much trauma bonded for life
These three are very messy adults and also they are raising Lance's clone they found. She's their little baby, all three of them love her so much, but also they are messy people living in messy world and are kinda fail at parenting. They are not horrible but also- Allura tends to baby her too much, Lance has tendency to project his own trauma and is over-protective, Narti has screwed sense of what is and isn't dangerous for a human child and just let her do whatever and also tends to bother her like a funny owner of a grumpy cat. Also all three of them are embarrassing soccer parents, so there's that.
I do think there's lot more to it, but i feel it's already long enough and i want to flesh out these three's personalities and dynamics a lot more. A lot of this most likely will be changed cause I am very indecisive at the end of the day. Anyway thank you so much for asking!!! Sorry this is late (I was kinda on a trip for a week and also rewrote the other reality stuff three times but ehh)
I think we as a society should bring back brotps. I think we should be weirder about characters being friends the same way people are weird about ships. Make those two characters who interacted once or twice besties. Make it difficult for them to get rid of each other even if they want to. Go nuts
#Lance's clone hasnt been named yet but I feel like she'll have an old white lady name like Lenore or Agatha or Mildred#cause she feels like she has a personality of someone who would choose an old white lady name#reminds the teacher they have homework type of nepo baby#Poor girl wants to be taken seriously and prove herself and wants to be this super serious super competent worker#But it's hard to do that when the head council woman keeps calling you 'little sweet pea' while pinching your cheeks#Anyway this reality is specifically important for one reason-#I want canon!Allura to see a version of herself who has similar trauma as her and is a mess but is also living and trying to move on#(To me Allura was frankly suicidal in canon and i am treating the end as part sacrifice and part suicide attempt from survivors guilt)#So I want Allura to just meet a version who understands and validates her.#Who shares similar past and pain but is also older and capable of living and deserving of living#Who is living proof that 'yeah life sucks balls. But we can keep going forward' to give her more hope#Who isn't killed by her trauma but also isnt fucking evil (fuck you Evil Alteans episode)#(this may also cause an opposite effect and being all 'hey so a version of you has managed to get her shit together#why are you still so lame sad and mopey??' Or something like that. Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯??)#And I just imagine this reality Allura being rather sweet with ps8!Allura. Kinda like how Allura was when she found out Pidge is girl#Anyway thank you for encouraging my rambles. I need to change a lot of it but basic gist is this#Also with Veronica and Kuron their relationship is pretty much-#'wow you are so fucked up and strange. Thank god I am normal' on both ends#post s8 posting#Post s8 au

Thoughts on an au where Earth also has alchemy but it's kinda like one in fma and Lance did the Human Transmutation?? (I don't think kid!Lance would initially be interested in studying nerd shit alchemy but if it's to bring someone he loves? Then yeah. This guy was in show equivalent of nasa/stem program so he can be a pilot, I believe in him)
Very very very much like where you’re going with this Anon. Because oh boy does this give one the opportunity to test Lance to his limits *insert one evil cackle here.* (As someone who loves fmab, but especially fma03 and what that particular version did with its homunculus, *fma spoilers here* and their relationship with identity, and the identity imposed upon them, the very essence of ‘came back wrong’ this could lead to a horrible no good very bad time for Lance should I start writing anything remotely like this. Which I’ve now begun. Whoops.)
I have many thoughts :))) Probably focused way too much on the fma alchemy part, but brace yourself.
So. Humans have alchemy. Maybe they’re naturally born with this ability, perhaps many years ago ancient Alteans arrived in hiding and brought the practice of alchemy with them. It’s just a thing that’s always existed.
Pidge and Matt are the obvious to go for if you follow the fma storyline. They’re the kid geniuses and honestly that sounds like an interesting fic following the pair of them resurrecting their Dad (or perhaps Pidge trying to and Matt only catches on far too late). But. But. But Lance going f*** it we ball and messing around with those mystic mumbo jumbo dark forces he doesn’t get, learning to understand them because he cannot handle a reality where this dead person isn’t around? Yes please. I write self indulgently.
You get it! Lance got into fighter pilot class because there was a spot, meaning he would probably have been the top of cargo class, and you don’t get there without at least trying. Yeah, he’d call it ‘nerdy’, but this guy will put in the effort if it comes to it, and who’s he fooling, he was very much enjoying himself in that M&m episode.
So, if the situation arises, if he loses someone he cares about, and he’s in a world where the solution is there seemingly in the palm of his hand (human transmutation)? Yeah, he’ll put in the hard work, and wouldn’t think twice about the repercussions on him if it means whoever he’s doing this for will be okay. Is it selfish? Is it selfless? Who can say? Lance cares so much for his family, something happening to them would devastate him, so in this kind of au they’ll probably be at the top of the list of resurrection. So I’m thinking:
-His mother (his family is in shambles and a kid Lance wants things to go back to normal). Totally not ripping off fma with this suggestion.
-Rachel (they’re the closest in age, she has a matching jacket with him/has worn a spare version of his jacket so I’m gonna use what little breadcrumbs I have to presume she’s the sibling closest to him. I also like the probably refuted by canon headcanon of them being twins, and how upon returning to earth those two would deal with this new 3 year age gap between them. The ramifications of that time skip and Lance trying to find his own place in his family again just seems interesting to explore but I digress).
-Veronica (have more of a feel for her personality as opposed to characters like Rachel, Marco, and Luis. And Lance was pretty protective of her, despite Veronica being older than him).
-Hunk (could even go the childhood friends route with them). There’s nothing Lance wouldn’t do for his friends, he values them so much.
-Allura if it’s set around the same time as canon is (I’m an allurancer at heart and can’t help adding her to the list. Besides, allura has healed/resurrected him in canon during omega shield. Lance would want to give back, and would probably rationalise it as something she would do, sacrificing herself for someone else. Mr I can’t imagine this world without you is going to great lengths to get her the heck back, even at the cost of himself aka the fic I’m currently writing now Anon what have you done).
-or to pull plots up from canon, it could be Shiro and this is how Kuron (homunculus Shiro) is born, but I kinda see Keith being the one more likely to pull off the human transmutation for this. Maybe they work together on this? It would mean that Shiro and Lance would have to have a stronger bond than they did in canon, but anything is possible in an au (not that they didn’t have small moments, but they weren’t a focus like Keith and Shiro were).
Of course, it doesn’t go to plan at all. Whatsoever.
To what lengths would he go for sacrifice?
It’s all about that equivalent exchange.
-an arm and a leg because this gives him the perfect coping with humour ™ opportunity to say it only cost him an arm and a leg. Plus, perhaps Lance brought this person back out of guilt, ‘if I had been fast enough—‘. His inaction to save them the first time now leaves him without an arm, or without a leg. Or both (he’s not tethering anyone’s soul to armour here, just depends on how much flesh is taken from him to recreate the deceased’s body). Also, also. It correlates to his two positions on Voltron. The very same arm he was, the very same leg.
Also. It’s about those parallels of being just that little bit more like his hero (Shiro) but knowing that the loss of his arm was self inflicted, making him feel like a false hero, a presense, and he couldn’t feel further away from Shiro. He failed to save this person.
-memories of him in the mind of people he cares about (If you’re feeling super mean).
-His memories of the deceased. Now he wants to know why exactly he risked so much to bring back this unknown person back. What do they mean to him?
-him unknowingly giving up his soul so they can have one. And they’re fine and Lance feels like he was the one who came back wrong ™ there is something missing in him and he doesn’t get it.
And then whoever it is comes back.
They get thrown in a healing pod. Lance probably gets berated by whoever is there (Shiro, his mother, Coran) for doing so reckless, so risky without telling anyone. He knew they’d talk him out of this, but it all worked out right? Right?
But this person isn’t right.
Something about their skin is like a reanimated corpse’. It’s a little too pale. And their eyes are a little too dead. But it can all go by the wayside, they can ignore it. Being gone for so long can’t have been easy.
Said person resents who Lance made them be.
He didn’t bring them back at all.
And so we go the route of them having been brought back but is it really them? Or someone else who has been left with Lance’s memory of who they’re meant to be?
A small part of this person cares for Lance as they did, as a son/friend/sibling/significant other, and they hate that.
Maybe they require quintessence to keep them alive. And oh no. Not this again.
Just. Lance learning alchemy for the purpose of saving someone only he doesn’t save them at all. He risks it all to create a person that never asked to exist, that never asked to be who he wants them to be.
He didn’t make them right.
#vld#vld lance#alchemist lance#Askbox of the ether#Rambling into the ether#Thank you for this ask!!!!!#I have no idea if this is where you wanted me to go with this but I very much enjoyed letting my thoughts run wild with this one.#Sorry for the tangents.#I very much enjoy the idea of Lance learning alchemy. In an au. Or in canon#(that’s pretty much where my fic paint me like your galaxy follow me like the North Star is going. Eventually)#There’s so much angst in this one but that’s to be expected with human transmutation.

i recently finished vld and i’m like. struck by how dissonant the final two seasons are. it really does feel like a whole new show and not in a good way; the plot is extremely flimsy, characters are introduced who wind up having no real narrative importance but eat up screentime anyways, relationship arcs are started and dropped, and the battles just wind up being a repeat of ‘we have to stop this laser’ and just fights in an empty wasteland with nothing interesting in the dynamic or strategy. when i was watching s7 i remembered why i stopped before the final episode, because seeing that new robeast come out of the sky immediately post-sendak just made me so tired.
s8 as well just…doesn’t know what it wants to do. allura is put through the absolute most and COULD have an interesting arc of being pushed down a darker path as a result of her unresolved grief and continuous loss but the plot of her taking in the dark entity really winds up having no actual consequence on the narrative. genuinely, her and lance’s relationship could have been easily one of the most interesting in the show had the writers actually paid attention to the stuff they had allura say in s8e1 to lance about not having a family or a home or anything at all. it could have been a really great exploration of two characters seeking solace in each other for the wrong reasons—allura because she desperately needs someone to not leave her, lance because he needs someone to love him to feel like he has worth. launch date left me feeling really sad at the end and i know it wasn’t the intention. their relationship throughout the whole season just seemed to be undercut by this feeling of sadness and a misalignment. i couldn’t believe they were really in love, even at the end. they had little moments together and when they did, it was so devoid of chemistry or energy. honestly i really just mourn all the potential allura as a character really could’ve had especially in s8, and how the end for her after all this loss and pain and grief was for her to essentially kill herself, that her best ending was to reunite with her dead father and not to keep living despite it all, that she wouldn’t get to see altea restored or to be the leader for her people she wanted so much to be. it’s a tragedy and not in a good way.
and i think vld’s desperate attempts at ‘nuance’ and ‘morally grey’ characters really wind up sabotaging it in the end; i can’t tell you how hard i rolled my eyes when they tried to convince me zarkon was simply blinded by quintessence or when lance told those kids how ‘allura saw good in everyone, even in zarkon and honerva’. this isn’t how you write nuance, zarkon prior to quintessence had been shown to believe firmly in the castes in galra society and saw the potential of quintessence as simply a means to create greater weapons. the galra were an empire before they went galactic, and empires have never been good in the first place. nuance isn’t about saying how ‘the bad guys have a little bit of good in them actually’, or that ‘in another reality, alteans are evil’. and these muddied messages lead to people actually saying the galra empire wasn’t all bad. looking at the series as a whole, i feel it was doomed from the start to be this way, and its unfortunate. there is so much potential here, and its wasted.
(also the belief that s8 was edited and reanimated is a bunch of bs, while certain elements like ezor being alive were 100% edited in and shiro’s wedding a last minute edition, doesn’t mean the rest of the season underwent major overhauls. its clear the studio was under a tight schedule and the amount of money you’d need to animate a different character over/remove a character for entire scenes or scrap entire pre-existing footage is ridiculous and not to mention an exorbitant amount of work. the reality is is that s8 was poorly written from the jump, and while executive meddling is likely (as always), i think we have to accept there’s no secret s8 or conspiracy. it was bad. when you listen to the showrunners, they’re proud. i don’t think major editing was the case OR that they sabotaged their own work because of the fanbase. these are all just excuses to cope with the reality)
#vld#.txt#endlessly fascinated by s8 its like a mecha id watch and go ‘oh thats…huh’ and think abt it maybe once or twice#like aldnoah.zero 💀

Altean families hcs
Heya! I'm not stopping. Twi thread
Warnings: 18+ (mostly cuz biology talk), Half-altean Lance.
I am gonna start with alteans and their structure. I believe that alteans are quite matriarchal. We don’t have enough clues about it in canon, but from what I see, mothers are quite the leading power.
Honerva was unstoppable and she stopped only when SHE wanted (tho destroying realities, like she got what she wanted) and Allura talked to her. Plus she got Zarkon wrapped around her finger before going mad and even a lil after that. Imagine her not being evil. Jeez what a woman she’d be.
I believe that Melenor might be the Queen by blood and Alfor entering the family by marriage and becoming a consort. Why? One of the main reasons is that Alfor never ever wears any kind of crown, while Melenor and Allura always do. Also you can see in this screenshot, Melenor sitting next to Zarkon - the sole emperor of Daibazaal - closer than her husband, who is friends with said emperor, meaning Melenor has higher status than her husband.
Though, here, she’s standing on the side. But he is not a King for nothing right?
But it can say nothing about alteans being matriarchal. I hcs them like that, cuz it seems fitting for them to put mothers and families on a pedestal.
So, now I’ll start to explain altean process to start a family. I already explained their courting process here (вставить ссылку).
Alteans can only get pregnant when both partners want it and it can not happen by accident. Conception is actually considered a very special process and even a ritual in Altean culture and is not considered like something dirty or full of lust. It’s usually something very-very gentle. Though usual sex is kinda stigmatized and they mostly don’t talk about it. Yeah you have really slow social progress, when you live in monarchy and your population lives for more than 600 years (that’s around Coran’s age and he considered as middle aged man).
Getting back to pregnancies. At conception, a portion of quintessence from each partner is fused to form child’s. It’s a big strain for future parents cuz it’s literally part of their life force is gone to their child. Because of this, they rarely have more than 2-3 children.
This ritual is counted as the 1st day of child’s existence. So birthday counts from the conception date. Also, because of their huge life spawn, they count their age as centuries. For example, “I am 17” means that the child is 170 years old. They’re considered as a minor till their 250 birthday. Modern alteans can, basically, live forever until they’re killed (im pretty sure that they have tech to change DNA (also this shit is controversial as hell, but i will talk about it when i get to write about politics). But they can look old, like Alfor did, because of stress. Stress is their kryptonite in that case.
(also i suspect that Altea has a shorter year, being closer to it’s sun)
Oh, also, a little biology: alteans deffinetly have different sexes, looking at their bodies, they have pretty obvious sexual dimorphism. Though, knowing how advanced they are (thanks for changing DNA tech) and their abilities for shapeshifting, they probably can easily change how they like it and have a child. They might be like some kinds of fish or lizards, which can change their sex when needed. Like they’re born as hermaphrodites. but for some alteans male hormones are stronger, for some female are (and i’m pretty sure that they have their own hormones, they’re aliens after all, i’m just using this terminology for better understanding).
Anyway, mothers for alteans are the ones who bear the child and feed them later (and they def feed some kind of milk, why else would alteans have boobs? to store quintessence there?). And they are quite the heroes/heroines, cuz babies take a lot from alteans, mostly quintessence, I think. But physically too. I think that they can have longer pregnancies. The reason humans have their babies for 9 months and even then the baby is helpless and can’t even hold their head, it’s cuz the head is so big and if it’d grow more it’d be a big problem for mothers in the stretching department. But alteans don’t have that problem with shapeshifting so the babies are bigger. Maybe a lil smaller than Allura on the screenshot.
So because pregnancy is really taxing, it’s exactly why they prefer to have multiple partners, so they can help each other (looking at you, Coran). Also I think alteans could have little traditions, like giving a pregnant lady some presents or flowers, even if you don’t know her well. Pregnant one is a really precious one. Alteans if stress (kryptonite!) can easily have a miscarriage and it’s always devastating for them. So they try to avoid any bad news during pregnancies.
sidenote: it’s weird to refer to a pregnant altean solely as she/her, cuz alteans can literally alter their biology. who knows, maybe it’s alfor who gave birth to allura. we will never know.
(but, according to my hcs, we know, cuz allura calls melenor mother and that means that she was the one who was pregnant with her.)
So the next thing is really important for alteans and their families. As you well know, alteans have a deep connection with quintessence and can kind of control it. Each family has its own little “lake” of quintessence. This lake keep them all connected to each other, mostly emotionally. They can’t read each other’s minds, but it’s easy for them to sense a mood and feelings in general. I think, it’s the same how the Lions communicate and connect.
This connection is really important, because it can help all members of this lake to feel needs of altean mother and then children’s needs. It also helps them to feel their quintessence more clearly and develop empathy.
A child is accepted into family’s lake when their quintessence grows stronger and detaches from their mother’s completely (at first it’s really intertwined and helps mother to take care of their kid). They have a traditional ritual for that and it’s held by the most magically talented member of the family. But it can also happen naturally, if the kid is close with everyone in the family, tho connection will be a bit weaker, because no one leads kid’s quintessence in the right place.
The acceptance ritual usually happens at their 5-10 year (it’s really early for alteans if you remember their lifespan). If not accepted, then the child will feel unwanted, abandoned and in general will be very restless and prone to stress and depression.
If someone is not accepted, they’re not considered a real family. The marriage is all about future spouses to get this connection with each other.
This connection can weaken though, it’s not permanent and needs refreshing. Usually it’s enough to just spend time with each other. But it’s highly emotional and if someone doesn’t want to be connected, they link will break.
Now let’s talk about my baby half-altean Lance >:)
So, Luis and the others are not full siblings. Luis was born from the human, when the others were born from an altean who happened to get on Earth somehow (i know how, but i wanna save something for my long ass fic which MAY be translated if I could find a beta). That altean and Lance’s mom have had Marco and Veronica. But the altean didn’t expect that Lance’s mom would have 2 eggs. Alteans do not have that at all. A little later after Lance and Rachel were conceived, he died of the quintessence strain. On Earth no one really knew why.
But well, these two were never accepted in the lake with his father, Marco and Veronica (these two didn’t even know about being part-alien), so they grew up with diagnosed ADHD and self worth issues.
There we step into more of the AU territory, cuz Lance is known as altean much earlier, maybe before s 2. Coran and Allura are estatic. They were so used to their big families always buzzing lake, so felling only each other was really lonely. So Allura accept Lance as her own brother (yeah, Allura was that much uninterested). She did use a little too much magic because of her inexperience, so Lance got his marks and his ears started to change (cartilage are softer and can be bend easier).
He started to become more altean in general. Like he isn’t disgusted by food goo anymore for example and gets stronger easier. He can’t shapeshift, bc human bones, but he can change his skin color. It was weird af for him to feel Allura and Coran as he feels his lion, but it did helped him a lot with his ADHD and worries. Plus he got a new sister and, kind of, a new dad? Or Uncle? He’s not sure. But it’s the closest to his family he ever had since they got into space.
Thank you for reading! Hope you like it! Please let me know what hcs do you have about altean or maybe galra families!

Sorry for bringing up vld but how would you have done an evil Allura ep?
this is such a good question and thinking about what we could have seen instead of the evil alteans, i think there's two things to consider: one, what did Allura, our Allura, need to see or to learn by crossing over into that alternate reality at that point in the story, and two, what would need to happen to her character that would create an "evil" Allura.
i think you could write a version of Hole in the Sky that takes place in a universe not that different from the main VLD continuity, in which instead of waking up to the paladins arriving, Allura wakes up alone. maybe Coran is dead, maybe he never got frozen, or maybe she couldn't wake him from his cryogenesis. either way, she's awake, ten thousand years into the future, the galra have taken over the universe, and she doesn't have voltron or its paladins.
Allura's goodness is at the core of her character, but so is her rage and grief. i think in the event that you have an Allura who is truly isolated and alone, with no allies and no resources, you have the recipe for an Allura that is a lot more cutthroat. not evil, per se, but pushed to a place where she has to make harsher choices, deadlier ones. a truly isolated Allura is a recipe for a vigilante version of Allura, an anti-hero Allura.
this works a lot better in the context of our Allura coming across a version of reality that is different from the main continuity, because the lesson she gets to learn is not some half-baked cautionary tale about "becoming as bad as the enemy". it's a genuine, honest look at the places that isolation, loneliness, and grief could push her, and it shows her the important role that the paladins and the team play in her life. it fits thematically a lot better coming off the lion swap, because it shows Allura the value that the team has, and would push her into realizing that accepting the team and integrating into it is what she has to do. which in turn fits much better into her overall arc of learning to love and trust and find belonging again after the loss of altea.
also, we would get to see badass anti-hero Allura on our screens. i know in my soul she has an eyebrow scar, and is the hottest thing that any of us have ever seen.

Parallels between Zarkon/Honerva and Keith/Pidge!!!
Ok.. so... I was rewatching Voltron when I noticed some parallels between Zanerva and Kidge. These are just theories so nothing is canon but I noticed that there are many thing so similar and that's pretty strange...
The way they met each other.
We know that Zarkon met Honerva when she was doing experiments and studying the portals of the differents reality, and Zarkon saw Honerva for the first time thanks to her cat Koba.
Well... Keith and Pidge really met for the first time when they went on Arus and decided to be a team for save the universe. Personally, I don't think they had a talk when they resqued Shiro but that's not the point. The point is how they met: thanks to the lions which are made with the comet that can travel through realities. Lions and cats are felines, so the same family.
2. The person who they both know
Honerva knew King Alfor since school (as we see in her memories on s8), while Zarkon knew King Alfor since they did the alliance, but they had never met before the comet's discovery. King Alfor is an altean.
As we know, Keith knew Lance since the Garrison, and so Pidge, and I add one more: it was Lance that decided to follow Keith when he tried to resque Shiro, while Pidge followed Lance. But there's more... Allura gave Lance altean marks on s8, so he's in part altean now...
3. Quintessence
Just don't be scared...
We know that both Honerva and Zarkon were corrupted by quintessence: Honerva worked with it while Zarkon went in close contact upon entering the rift. Allura told us that quintessence awakened the violent and evil nature of Zarkon (As we will also see with Lotor and the paladins in s6).
In s1 we can see Pidge working on the Galra cristal, which is full of quintessence, while Keith he hit a container of quintessence while fighting a druid, spilling some on himself. Familiar right?
Well, someone would say that that quintessence just cured him, but we can see that Zarkon could breath in space without oxygen, and in s6 Keith, while he was fighting with Shiro's clone, was still breathing in space without his elmet. In the same episode, we can see his Galra form awaken, in fact he became more violent... Just a coincidence?
And... they both entered in the rift...
4. Family
Have you ever seen how much they were willing to sacrifice everything for their family?
I mean... Honerva literally destroyed everything while Zarkon betrayed his friends and team for save his wife...
Pidge was very determined to find her dad and Matt and, as we can see in s1 ep1, she countered the mission to search for them or otherwise find information about them. And It's not the only time she does this. In s5, when Zarkon wanted Lotor in exchange for Sam Holt, we see how she is willing to do anything to get her father back, yelling at Matt, Shiro and all her team mates; not to forget that in s1 she threatened to quit the team for the same reason.
Keith is also willing to sacrifice his life for the people he cares about, such as Naxela for example. Also in s8, while the team is in Honerva's mind, you can see very well how he tries hard to save Pidge in particular, shooting and hitting the surface with the bayard, then falling to his knees and surrendering in defeat.
5. The titles
Ok... Now let's think about it...
Zarkon was a Galra black paladin..
Keith was also a Galra black paladin...
Honerva was a scientist...
Pidge is also a scientist...
Both are a Galra black paladin and a scientist!
Also, at the end of s8, Keith said that the Galra wanted him as their leader, but he refused. If he had accepted, the parallel would have been somewhat worse...
6. Pidge as Honerva references
Also, we can see how much Pidge and Honerva look similar extriorly.
For example, when she was working on the Galra crystal on s1, but there's more! In s4, when she was searching Matt, she went on a planet for a merchant, and she was wearing a black hood at the time, similar to Honerva's…
And, on s5, when Hunk, Lance and Pidge programmed a robot for fun, made some selfies. In one, we can see Pidge wearing Honerva's hood...
And that's all guys. But these are just crazy theories of mine. One thing I really wanted to say is that English is not my first language so there must be some kind of mistakes and I'm sorry about that...

Galran and Altean technology is rather cross-compatible. In many areas they can work together, but Altean tech doesn't often seamlessly integrate to anything, as complicated and meticulous as it can be. If a piece of Altean tech was migrated over to Galran tech, it would work, but it would require fine-tuning to get it it to work the exact same.
Sendak's mind-copy is Altean technology. Abiding by an Altean mainframe, there are restrictions in place to keep him passive. The capabilities of the restrictions Ateans can put on the mind actually alludes pretty strongly to that episode with the alternate reality with the Altean Empire. One of the main plot points of that episode was a mind controlling device.
“The technology developed to control other beings is called a hoktril. It is a device embedded into the back of the skull. ....it erases the free will of a possible evil being, and has been used to stop wars between civilizations that have been on-going for centuries.”
Erasing the free will of a 'mind-copy' is simply considered acceptable and not the same as doing it to an original being. But that is all to say, they have the ability to do that, and use it with him. It's justified obviously (given the whole he's trying to fucking blow up Earth thing) but even so. The Sendak 'A.I.' just is Sendak, albeit one forcefully conformed into something Team Voltron can use.
However, the Galra do not have technology like this. They have copies of the mind, but they do not have the same measures of restrictions as the Alteans do, nor the same ruthless efficiency. If Sendak is transferred over to a Galran or just a non-Altean mainframe instead, the 'rules' in which he has to abide by are lost, and he's free to act as he pleases.
Unbound by these limitations, he's quickly able to learn how to navigate his environment and taking control of what he can use.
Taking control of Empire sentries is especially preferred because he would be overlooked but more so because they're everywhere, and once he learns how to jump from one frame to another he would have no end of bodies at his disposal.
He would miss his actual body, though, and he'd be prone to conscientiously turning his left arm into a weapon or a means in which he can maneuver around with greater agility. Reflex.

What if, to bring Lance back from the dead. Allura had to kill a Lance from another reality? Maybe this is how Altean magic works. Little bit like equivalent exchange.
So that also mean to restore Daibazaal and Altea, both planets had to be destroyed in someone else’s reality.

PURE SPECULATION but
Lotor could bring the Alternate Reality Alteans back into play.
1. I don’t think we’re done with Lotor. They’ve invested far too much in him to just finish his character the way they’ve left it in season 6. And apparently nothing stays in the rift so. Lotor has to come back. please
2. Lotor has A LOT in common with those Alteans. They share highly imperialistic views, believe in conquering, and use Altean ideology to bolster their power and ‘right’ to conquer.
3. Lotor was left in the space between realities as the end of season 6. What if Lotor doesn’t come back to this reality first? What if Lotor winds up in the adjacent reality Voltron visited back in season 3?
It would be such a power move, and such a cool way to tie those Alteans back into the story.
The show spent a whole episode establishing evil!Alteans and familiarizing us with them, laying out why they’re problematic, emphasizing that *we can’t let them get to our reality*, tying them directly to the second comet -Lotor’s comet-
That episode has already done a lot to develop plot and characters, but I’ve always had the feeling there was more to them than what we’ve seen and this could be why.
Evil Alteans could be coming back and I am so pumped!
blame @lasersheith for helping me come to this conclusion.

yknow. zarkon and honerva becoming evil solely because of the rift creatures/quintessence poisoning was an incredibly weak plotline to begin with, but the real kicker was how little the show explored it. like yeah yeah what about the baku thing and why were zarkon and honerva redeemed but not lotor im not talking about that. it would have been so interesting to explore what happened to the other galra after zarkon and haggar came back to life. like yeah their culture was implied to be pretty warlike to begin with but how did they go from allies and friends to the other planets in their system to conquerors and colonizers? how exactly did zarkon get all the other galra on board with getting revenge on alfor, when he had obviously only destroyed daibazaal to try and save them and even went through all the effort of safely evacuating the entire planet? as far as we know none of the other galra ever encountered the rift creatures in the same way that zarkon and honerva did. sendak in the alternate reality even seems like a pretty nice dude, how did he (and the other commanders) descend into cartoon villainy? did zarkon and haggar convince all the other galra generals to accept the rift creatures the same way honerva split hers among the alteans? even then that wouldn’t explain them becoming evil, since that wasn’t what happened to the alteans. were they driven mad by exposure to quintessence the same way honerva was when they started taking it to extend their lifespans? or did they slowly become more and more ruthless as their emperor had them commit atrocity after atrocity? that would have been so cool to watch

I know no one cares about voltron anymore (or at least not like they used to) and tbh I don’t either but Keith is still my emotional support character I can project onto when I need to work through some emotions and I just went through an entire season worth of story arc in my head on this new au idea so hear me out.
This is a sheith au with some toxic NSFW mention so antis DNIA. Keith is a trans man as well in this au.
What if sometime before Keith goes to the quantum abyss and they find out about Lotor (but Lotor still turns out evil) Honerva hits Keith with the mind control but instead of a mindless drone she targets his insecurities and he goes full villain era where he just doesn’t give a fuck anymore. Because arguably there is a lot Keith has been through where at any point he could have said ‘fine, you want me to be the villain? I’ll be your villain’ and with the recent trend online embracing going ape shit cuz we’re tired of being nice I thought it was a valid theme to explore. There’s still so much in between I wanna say but it’s already a long post so have this for now because I had to share.
Like I can actually see Keith aligning with Lotor and Honerva’s plans to jump realities so he can join them in a world where the Galra have a home planet. Him forming an actual plan to destroy voltron because he’s resentful of their mistrust of him being Galra. Or just how they hate on the Galra for being the enemy and he takes it kind of personally. He also uses his relationship with Shiro against them. Using Shiro’s bids for him to come back against them by pointing out that he knows Shiro has feelings for him but won’t admit to them because Shiro wants to keep Keith ‘in his shadow’. Shiro would say something like ‘I want my best friend back’ and Keith would force him to say that he actually loves him in front of the paladins. Because it’s true and they were pinning so hard but Shiro thought taking the next step would complicate things for them and voltron so he really tried to maintain the status quo with their relationship and Keith is tired of it. Forget shame Keiths out to destroy the paladins for personal reasons and because they pose the biggest threat to his new mission. I imagine the paladins would still find Keith’s mom and during their next battle she’d come in to try and stop Keith but instead of sobering him it only fuels his anger toward them due to his unresolved resentment for her leaving him on earth and abandoning him.
Time goes by and developments happen in Honerva’s plan and Allura takes the RED lion (tbh it just seems more fitting I mean really it was her father’s lion why would she take Blue?). On another mission the paladins get captured (because of course they do). Shiro is still very desperate to get Keith back (the same desperation that Keith uses in the Black Paladins episode so you know I’m talking fucking desperate) and Keith at this point has very complicated feelings for Shiro like the mind control only goes so far as to convince him he’s justified but all of his actions reflect actual emotions he would have if he truly felt vengeful or righteous. So when the paladins get captured, he’d get the idea to have sex with Shiro because if he plans to kill voltron he’d morbidly want to know what being with Shiro is like before he kills him. But it’s not entirely one sided. Again Shiro is still holding out hope that he can save Keith. Of course he would much rather their first time be out of love instead of spite but again, desperate. It’s still very manipulative on Keith’s part with how he taunts and coerces. Shiro does consent though because his own feelings are a little more than fucked up about it too.
The paladins escape (because of course they do) and a few weeks pass before their next battle this time it’s the boss fight. Honerva still makes the device she uses to wormhole between realities but instead of the Alteans that she uses to fight voltron it’s Lotor and Keith. Voltron fatally wounds Keith and goes on to kill Lotor and destroy parts of Honerva’s wormhole device but Honerva herself gets away. They bring Keith’s damaged mech back to the castle (yes they still have the castle). He’s not directly wounded but the lost quintessence and oxygen deprivation means he’s barely hanging on but they get him in a pod in time and find out oh shit there’s a second heartbeat!
Cliche I know but shush. Anyway Shiro is wrecked because jesus what an emotional roller coaster having to fight your lover to near death only to find out he’s having your baby like fuck amiright? But Keith lives and is no longer under mind control so he’s understandably devastated to look back on what he did. The paladins (and for sure Allura) are a bit suspicious that Keith’s back to normal (except Shiro… poor bastard). Keith remembers everything and he can’t trust himself either because it’s not like he did all that as Honerva’s drone those were real feelings he may or may not have privately had at one time or another but they were more akin to intrusive thoughts because he has the emotional depth to understand that emotions are more nuanced than that and when he digs deeper he knows he doesn’t really feel that way. Oh and wtf now he’s pregnant, definitely some mixed feelings about that.
Sam Holt still went back to earth and builds the Atlas in time for Voltron and the Atlas to have the final boss fight with Honerva (we’re talking build and finished other than the crystal they need to jumpstart it so it doesn’t take them long to meet up on earth and plan the fight). (And for some added drama Keith is only in say the first trimester so he’s still mostly in fighting shape and he tries to help from the sidelines which freaks out Shiro but Krolia steps in to help so it’s a good bonding moment between her and Keith).
They win against Honerva, Allura lives goddamnit and Shiro and Keith go on to have the baby lol. I also imagine Keith would have a really fast birth for some reason idk something about higher Galra pain tolerance and him being oblivious so by the time he gets to labor and delivery he’s already like fully dilated lmao.
Damn I really wanted to write the full fic when I was thinking about it but now that I’ve finished the thought I’m gonna have to get back in the mood to actually write it…
Hmmm.
#play a drinking game with how many times I use the word because#should I put in a customary ‘don’t like don’t read sign’?#I’m using my own theories on galra reproduction for reasons that probably only make sense to me#this is mostly Keith feels#and#sheith feels#I have more to say on how the other paladins react to all this as well#I hate to make Lotor a villain but if Keith’s a villain Lotor is definitely a villain#fyi Keith actually wants the baby he just feels bad given the circumstances of conception#vld#voltron#keith kogane#takashi shirogane#sheith

Voltron Part 48
Season8 episode 12!!! Oh my gosh!!!! I’m almost done!!! Since, the season-review will be it’s own post again, there’ll be exactly 50 Parts of this. Which is just ~so~ satisfying. I could lie, and say that this all has been planned out from the start. But Fuck No! Even now, I don’t know exactly, what I’m doing:
I don’t know, if the episode-summary is the official one, cause I’m watching on a totally legal alternative to Netflix, but it says: “The Paladins must draw on their everlasting bong”
Are they gonna have a drug-trip?
Hunk’s in the yellow lion, together with Sailor Moon, Moustache Man and the random mortgage-owning Altean, we’ve known for like 2 episodes
Space witch’s gonna destoy the universe with the power of Google Maps! Okay, got it!
“The lions are responding again” Wow! How convenient!
Moustache Man is supposed to find a way, to stop Google Maps. The fate of the universe lies in his hands.... I TRUST HIM!
(Has anyone in the Voltron-Universe ever tried, just like... Spilling water, coffee or crumbs over the robots? Always destroys my electronics at least...)
Keith, what were you thinking when you tried to fight Space witch’s mecha by yourself. Even those little wings won’t help you with that!
Is this the last time, I’ll be seeing the “forming Voltron” animation? Cause if so, I’ve already got the champagne ready and waiting!
That still-frame of Shiro, while Moustache Man and Co. were explaining their plan, was so fucking goofy
Space witch pierced realities... Well.... BYE, FELICIA!
Awwww, Shay called the Balmeras to help Voltron and Hunk
The shipper in me is quacking. The rational part is questioning, why she did this, if the last one got immediately killed off
What the fuuuuuuuck? Why are Voltron and the Atlas combining????
What the fuck????
(Do y’all think, that on the Atlas, there is just like an intern. Who is *so* done and didn’t sign up for all of this shit?)
[You can also tell, how interested I am bout the current plot, by the amount of times my thoughts are drifting off, to other stupid scenarios]
“I don’t know, what just happened” The writers neither
Was this fusion, their attempt to do a group-shot of all the Paladins screaming? But they somehow needed to work in Shiro?
Question: The Paladins traveled to the Sven/Alteans are evil-Alternative Universe and everything was fine when they returned. Why does travelling between universes now destroy them?
The people in the different universes are just having a really weird day
Space witch is basically scrolling through AO3, trying to find the perfect AU-fic
The Atlas/Voltron sword looks like something straight out of a JRPG...... Oh! I get it! Cause they’re ~Paladins~
Krolia. You’re cool. But since when are you on speed dial with Moustache man??? The Atlas sure as hell didn’t call for you. They’ve got better things to do
the stupid face in their chest can shoot lasers.......................
Keith did an inspiring speech, about how “The power of friendship is magic” And Allura, Hunk, Lance and Pidge all were like: “Oh Shit! Friendship is magic!”
Voltron got trapped in one of the universes as it dissolved. But I think, we all know, that they’re gonna bullshit something together
Space witch finally got her Happy Ending. And honestly. Good! For! Her!
Why is Alternative Universe Lotor still a child?
R.I.P. Space witch
God, she deserves a goddamn rest, that poor bitch!
She just wanted her child!
But I guess, she ought to be petty and be willing to destroy everything. So she can still be unquestioned villain....

“Hand over the princess!” Keith bellowed, still wielding his luxite blade in his left hand and the Black Bayard’s newly unlocked Altean Broadsword in his right. Both swords were still dripping with a stringy purple ichor from the bloodless beheading of the witch’s undead son.
“How touching! The half-human abomination has come for his sweetheart,” the witch replied from the higher ground upon which she stood. “Here is your princess, murderer.”
He heard a familiar voice exclaim, “Keith!” and suddenly her image was shimmering before him, her bright soul entrapped in some type of bubble of dark energy.
“Allura!” he cried. “Come on, let’s go!” He ran uphill towards her, but abruptly halted when the bubble of energy disappeared and Allura’s image began multiplying until he was surrounded by a dozen seemingly identical copies of the woman he loved.
“But which one will you go with, you half-bred monstrosity?” asked the witch. “And why would any pure-bred Altean girl degrade herself by choosing a mongrel such as yourself as a mate?” Haggar laughed insanely as she taunted him. “She secretly hates you because you’re half-Galra,” she hissed venomously.
Keith felt tears welling at the corners of his eyes, and he felt a stab of fear that the witch’s words might actually be true.
“Make your choice, but if you choose wrongly, you will be stuck with a Altean witch who will hate you for the rest of your miserable life,” she cackled.
Keith closed his eyes and opened his heart. “Allura, I love you,” he murmured in the darkness of his nightmare. “I’ve come to rescue you because you are my teammate and my friend. I don’t expect you to love me in return. I only want to set you free.” He dropped his swords. The Black Bayard slowly faded away as the luxite blade sparkled before returning to its sheath.
Keith opened his eyes and saw that only one of the Alluras looked directly at him, her kind eyes shining and beautiful face streaked with tears as she smiled at him. The false Alluras bore countenances twisted by fear, revulsion, hatred, and rage. One by one, the illusions faded away.
“Keith!” the real Allura ran to him and threw her arms around his neck. “I love you!” she exclaimed, her voice quivering from heaving sobs. ”I love you!” He held her as her shoulders shook, and he wept along with her, stroking her long, soft hair. When her storm of weeping quieted, Keith gently wiped away the remaining tears that dampened her cheeks.
I love you,” she said earnestly as she gazed at him. “I always have. Don’t believe any of the lies that evil witch told you.”
“Allura,” he whispered hoarsely. “I—“
“Very impressive,” the witch admitted. “But you don’t think I’m going to give her to you, do you?” And with that, Allura was surrounded by the bubble of dark energy once more. The witch yanked her away, levitating Allura right out of Keith’s embrace and pushing him to the down the slope with a cackle as they floated away.
“No!” cried Allura, reaching for him.
“Allura!” Keith yelled, but they were both beyond his reach.
