Gotta say this international window has been extremely refreshing to see compared to anything from the Vlatko era
Squad rotation!?!? Played ALL of your first time call-ups!?!?!?
Prioritized NWSL games being a thing and rested players!?
Started ALL 3 keepers
SEVEN first caps - Hal Herschfelt, Yazmeen Ryan, Emily Sams, Emma Sears, Mandy Haught, Eva Gaetino, Alyssa Malonson
Alyssa Thompson FIRST international goal
Emma Sears FIRST international goal and assist on her debut
Naomi Girma FIRST and SECOND international goal
Mandy Haught shut out on her first cap
Emily Sonnett 100 cap cele
Mal Swanson 100 cap cele
Rose Lavelle 100 cap cele (ft. Wilma)
Kelley O'Hara USWNT half-time send off
Captain Mal, Captain Rose, Sanchez back in rotation, Emma won a Ballon d'Or, all 3 games ending with 3 US goals

Only one I'm really questioning is Gaetino. Seems a little like Hayes just wanted to add someone else playing overseas
I don’t watch PSG so I have no clue what Gaetino’s deal is. Gaetino has been to one camp before at the SBC when it was still Twila as HC but wasn’t capped, so maybe Emma’s just wanting to get another look at her? If any of y’all watch PSG and have a case to make for Gaetino, def send it in to help the rest of us out!!!
Personally, I would like to see Tara McKeown getting a look if Hayes is wanting to get some new defenders in.

in re French League / UWCL
Paris Saint-Germain and Paris FC got bounced in the UWCL qualifiers. While the latter was somewhat predictable, it raises some serious concerns about the state of the French league and French teams. So let's chat.
This would be the worst UWCL appearance for French teams since the 2013/2014 where Lyon was the only French team in the Round of 16, which they promptly lost to Potsdam. Up until today, there had always been at least two French teams - usually PSG and Lyon, though Montpellier made a guest appearance one year - in the knockouts.
Paris FC I am a bit more lenient towards. Manchester City recruited well and just have bigger, more experienced players than Paris FC does. I also think that Paris FC was maybe a bit overconfident because of their success last season and thought they could scalp hunt with the same ease this season. But the UWCL doesn't work like that, you need experience, you need to know how to handle these sorts of games and you need players who have been there before.
I do think that Paris FC will be back in the UWCL [qualifiers?] next season, so while I think the 5-0 loss was harsh, the 3-0 loss was more reflective of where each team stands. They'll lick their wounds and focus on the league and see what happens. Fair play to them.
What PSG did though was a fucking disgrace. But the thing about train wrecks is everyone wants to look at them, and I am no exception to that.
As a very petty ex, I am of course delighted that Mbock and Leuchter will be watching the UWCL from the comfort of their own homes. If they had made better life choices then they wouldn't be in this situation.
As someone who cares about coefficients, however, that result was a shot to the kneecaps for France.
Paris Saint-Germain is a good team. They have good players. Marie-Antoinette Katoto is a good player. Griedge Mbock is a good player. Romee Leuchter is a good player. Jackie Groenen is a good player. Grace Geyoro is a good player. Korbin Albert is a good player despite what the armchair vigilantes say. Eva Gaetino is a good player. These are all good, experienced players who have played big games before and there is zero, absolutely zero, reason for them to have been bounced in the group stage.
It's not to downplay Juventus because I do think they're a good team, too. They've caused Lyon headaches in the past. I don't particularly want to play against them in the group stage. Juve is a good, solid team who play good football. They had a game plan and they executed it really well.
But hot damn PSG should have beaten them. PSG has so much quality and experience. They should know better.
Now, obviously a lot of this is on the coach. Fabrice Abriel had never coached a UWCL team before, so it's not surprising in that sense that PSG's campaign was as disastrous as it was. You don't play a UWCL game the same way you play a league game. And even then - Abriel had never really coached a top team either. Fleury flirted with the top four, sure, and I think they were/are a top 4 contender, but they're not consistently there yet. So you had a coach who never coached a top side in a competition he has never coached in, and we saw the consequences of that.
Having the right coach matters when you are a UWCL team. It really, really does. You need a coach who knows what he is doing and you need a squad who knows what they are doing. We had a PSG coach who had never coached before and a team full of good players, but not really playing as a team.
So Lyon finds itself as the only French team. Law of probability says they will get one of Manchester City or Arsenal, as a certified Arsenal hater it's most likely going to be the latter because I just don't have the mental will power to deal with Love Island FC stans. But I digress. By being the only French team, Lyon is going to have a super unfavorable draw. If there isn't a Group of Death, cool, but I am not exactly holding my breath.
Lyon being the only UWCL team also reflects badly on the French league. I mean I suppose it's good in terms of consistency - seasons go by, Lyon is still there meaning so is my source of anxiety etc etc - but it also shows there is always one (1) French team, and the others struggle. Now I also think that argument is a little unfair, because if we're looking at the other leagues then it's always Bayern and Wolfsburg, Barcelona and Real Madrid, Chelsea, etc. So I don't really think it's fair there is only one dominant team in France when that is kind of the same team across every league, even the ones who are so-called competitive. If it's the same teams who appear in the UWCL year after year, just how competitive is it really?
Anyway. Lyon being the only team is not good for the French league because it does make it harder for other French teams to recruit top players. Now I've harped on about this before and I still think it's true: it's not up to Lyon to drop its standards (though I am sympathetic to the argument that Kang and Ponsot are doing just that), it's up to other teams to step up and invest.
Other teams need to step up, it's that simple. Teams need up salaries and infrastructure and conditions and media sponsorships and broadcast and all of that stuff. It's unfair for Lyon to singlehandedly keep France's coefficient afloat and then for other teams to be like "well we can't compete with Lyon." Well you could, all you have to do is invest time and money the way Aulas did all those years ago. Lyon being the only team to put in work is detrimental to the league itself.
If Aulas wants "five team to compete against Lyon" in the next three years, then one of two things need to happen: one, other teams step the fuck up, two, Lyon crashes down to everyone's level. That is the only way that happens. And if it's the first one, then the time is now. Salaries need to go up, conditions need to improve, etc. If it's the second, only give it a couple of seasons because I am so unconvinced by Kang and Ponsot's project.
There needs to be serious changes to the league. Because like I said, how do you convince top players to come to the French league if this is the type of performances teams put up? How do you attract top players, how do you keep top players? Serious discussions need to be had. PSG has some good players, but how do you expect the 2025 contracts to stay after a UWCL exit like that? How is Paris FC supposed to keep or recruit players to make its team more competitive?
Lyon's recruitment is far from being something to write home about but is my favorite one to bitch about. Chawinga is good, sure, Svava is TBD, we still don't quite know where Huerta is going to play. Montemurro raised serious red flags when he talked about giving academy kids playing time.
Lyon will most likely have a Group of Death, or at least one very close to it. You need experienced players to be able to handle those big games. Instead, our backups consist of academy kids and I don't care what reality you live in, a bunch of U-19s and U-20s are not going to cut it against bigger, more physical, and more experienced teams. You need depth to make it past the group stages in the UWCL and Lyon simply does not have it. Lyon is one injury crisis away from being decimated and with this team's luck, it will happen right at the start of UWCL play.
With PSG and Paris FC only having the league and Coupe de France to occupy themselves, it also means they will be fresher when the confrontations against Lyon come along. Lyon will be playing every three days (as long as they are in the UWCL), PSG and Paris FC will be playing once a week. Montemurro can rotate, sure, but it's still mentally and physically taxing.
Anyway, nightmare draw: Lyon, Arsenal/WOB, Juventus, Hammerby. Let's see how close I get to being put on suicide watch.
